The Dolphins fought in this ugly game but it wasn't enough. And Joe Philbin has some explaining to do.
The Jets kicked a 33 FG in overtime to win the game. The problem is the Dolphins head coach gave them that chance when he called timeout on a previous attempt -- one that Randy Starks blocked. Had Philbin not called time out, the teams might still be playing. Dan Carpenter missed a 48 yard field goal attempt that would have won the game.
Then the Jets answered with their winning drive.
Mark Sanchez completed a 38-yard pass down the sideline to Santonio Holmes. That put New York in field goal position to win the game.

One thing is clear here. We picked the 3rd QB in the draft and we got the 3rd best QB in the draft. Not bad. But it is what it is.
Posted by: Rob M | September 23, 2012 at 05:46 PM
All the haters want to point out about how Philbin shouldn't have called a Timeout.
Anyone think Maybe Starks went straight thru because the player heard the Whistle. Ya do know HOW HARD IT IS TO BLOCK A KICK IN THE NFL. PROBABLY ONLY 1 BLOCKED FG ALL SEASON IN BETWEEN ALL 32 TEAMS and 1000's of FG's. Stop blaming everything on the 1 person u hate on the TEAM.
That wasn't the coaches fault!!!!!! Grow up people.
Yes, Carpenter needs to buckle down. But we are talking about the LEader in the NFL in Touchbacks, and a Top 10 FG Kicker in the NFL.
Yea, Easy to replace.
Again the key was our **3RD Down Defense**.
Even when we Stop them the ball is completed. OUR BIGGEST PROBLEM IS OUR LB'S IN PASS COVERAGE!!!!
We already knew we didn't have Wr's!!! Nothing new there.
U have to like T-Hill!!! The kid is the Truth. We needed to see this Situation. We know the Uber Critical Fin wants to see if he folds like Henne or does he Grow when the Game is on the line!!
T-Hill is Showing "It". Yes, this was his 1st game against the JETS. But U have to admit he doesn't look like it's to much for him. Dashi was waiting for him to pull a henne and throw a Pick to end the Game or Just go 3&out!!!
We might have our QB!!!
Posted by: Dashi (MHM I BE) | September 23, 2012 at 05:47 PM
Our poor secondary made "sanchize" look like a servicable QB- shanme on us
Hey Ireland, maybe its time we made some moves at WR and CB and I don't mean let the 2 best we had go!!!!
Ireland had better kiss a picture of the Tuna every night- he has to be the only moron who would ever have given him a job; and while he is at it better kiss a picture of Ross too, because he is the only moron who would keep this loser employed

Hmm..... remove Sherman, insert Henning, we get the exact same things said 4yrs ago.
The names change but the betching remains exactly the same. Start cut and pasting guy. Because you already have the lines memorized. LOL
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | September 23, 2012 at 05:48 PM
Well...on the bright side....our rookie QB and HC will learn from this game. Sherman is a vet though so WTF is he thinkin I have no idea, no wonder why he can't maintain a job in the NFL. We outplayed the Jests and deserved a win, but that's not what the final score says....Tannehill needs some more practice and more reps, Arizona defense isn't that good so let's see some improvement in that game. More than 250 yards passing and at least 2/1 TD/INT ratio next game would be a good start for Tannehill.
Posted by: MiamiD20 | September 23, 2012 at 05:48 PM
Undefeated Falcons up 25-0 at half time.
Matt Ryan 22/29 for 300 and 3 TDs...at half time.
Anyone still want to debate the Long pick?
Idiots.

Tannehill is friggin pathetic. Moore should be starting.
Posted by: Fin 77 | September 23, 2012 at 05:49 PM
Coaching 101: Your team only needs 10 yards to win the game to get your kicker closer.
Do you (A) Throw long with a rookie QB?
OR
(B) Run the ball trying to gain a few yards to help kicker?
I vote B

Anyone want to wager on that? LOL
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | September 23, 2012 at 05:51 PM
IMO the team was put in a position to win by Tannehill so he did a good job not great just good. The loss is squarely on Carpenter 43 and 47 an NFL kicker should make consistently. Will some one give me a favor and post Carpenter makes and misses of FG attempt above 45? I bet it's bad..
Posted by: Clue | September 23, 2012 at 05:51 PM
Could be worse, Saints are 0-3
Posted by: MiamiD20 | September 23, 2012 at 05:52 PM
While everyone is piling up on Carpenter my take is simple. Yes, the kicker is supposed to make those kicks but also that kicker wouldn't be in that mess if the people calling the plays called ones that kept us moving the chains.
The game reminded me of how Soprano played it and if you looked at both teams on the field under pressure, well, the Jets looked like we did under Soprano and the Fins looked like the old Soprano play calling after Reggie got hurt.
The OBVIOUS is that the rookie has no people to toss to to make the deep ball catches as he missed many throws.
We got what we drafted and there ain't anything that we fans can do about it until Ireland gets booted and we bring in a manager who makes good decisions on draft day.
Posted by: NY "G" | September 23, 2012 at 05:52 PM
Lets look at the upside here.
Disregarding a bad day from the coaches, the Fins are 4 players and 1 "thing" away from being a playoff contender.
WR, CB/Safety, Playmaking LB or DE, Keller type TE...and TIME.
I do think that a younger, maybe hipper OC might be something worth a thought, but with the relationship of Philbin and Sherman, that will NEVER happen.
This might be the FINS eventual achilles heel.
In y business, you learn to never make anyone you work with your best friend.

WE'RE IN THE CELLAR! WHATS NEW?
Posted by: FINS ARE GARBAGE | September 23, 2012 at 05:53 PM
I waited this long to post after that gutting loss just because I knew that the idiotic posts of 2nd guessing genius fans would actually cheer me up.
Phin78 said it well, we are what we are!!!!
Tannehill had some awful passes but guess what, he twice led this team into a position to where they could stay in the game and once to win it.
He's a rookie in his 3rd NFL start, 19 career college starts is not alot.
Who was the moron comparinh Tannehill to Henne in his 2nd NFL start throwing that bomb as time ran out to win the game on MNF, know your stuff please, that was midway through the second half and Henne had sat for a full season AND been groomed by Pennington, not Matt Moore.
This team has two legitimate receivers, Hartline and Bess, nether one a No 1 deep threat.
Our best TE is inconsistant and slow.
These are MAJOR needs we still need to address, we have very few weapons, yet our Rookie QB still put us in position to win the game, Carpenter has to make those kicks its that simple!!!!!
As to the blocked FG after Philbin called TO, cmon man 99% of all coaches would have done the same thing, that was just bad stinking luck.
Finally, lose the expectations for this season, get behind your team or STFU. We will be much improved in 2013 with a season of experience for Tannehill with new weapons brought in. Take the lumps and cheer the wins if and when they come.
Be a fan and not a hater!!!
Posted by: husketeer | September 23, 2012 at 05:53 PM
when carpenter missed the first fg i was thinking this is gonna bite us, he makes that FG an their is no overtime. The tanne interception for 6 was a bad offensive call when we are backed up and have rookie qb. the fumble by thomas, drop by armstrong on 3rd,not running the ball 3 times in a row after hartlines big catch and we were in fg range already just needed to pick up a few yards each time, then carpenter missing another FG identical to the other miss.As far as calling time out on field goals, i hate it and think its bush league strategy, i know everyone does it but i think its cheap and actually bad sportsmanship coming from a league that is suppose to be big on integrity.Just play the game without mind games, let the actions on the field determine the game. sad loss.

Well...I would say you probably have LOW expectations of how the QB position should be played....

..Trying to blame Philbin at the end of the game for calling timeout is pointless. Come on..Do you really think that the special teams coach would have said something had he thought they had a chance to block the kick? something like.."Hey Joe, we can exploit this gap..I have seen it all game..let it roll?" No. We have no idea if the jets line let up because they heard the whistle. You can argue all you want that you sae it on replay, and it was played a full speed..blah blah. unless you were there stop it.
All of this we should have done this and should have done that as far as the playcalling goes is pure rubbish. I'll give you overtime, sure. But even at the end of the game. That was hardly conservative playcalling. We were taking shots into the endzone. Funny how it is convenient to scream for yards when the down the field attack fails.. Even in overtime,We had a shot. An accurate throw to hartline and we all are whistling dixie.
This isn't freekin fantasy football..Real life, real games. We were in the game with a chance to win, with a rookie quarterback who is learning on the job. Have we forgot we are limited at reciever? Do we know if these routes everyone wants to see are even open? Some act like the playcaller sabotages the game because the calls are "conservative" We were in complete control of the game until a brain fart by Philbin cost us our best player(offesnively)
Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | September 23, 2012 at 05:59 PM
YG, were you suggesting the coaching was good today? Maybe I misunderstood. This loss was as usual a combination of things. The thing was, I had looked at Sherman as an upgrade but the truth is, he sucked bad today.
Posted by: cocoajoe | September 23, 2012 at 05:59 PM
MIAMI DOLPHINS ALL DAY!!!!...IAM PROUD OF THEM BOYS WE DID R THING AND THE KICKER LOST IT..STRAIGHT UP...HE ISNT PAID FOR THE OFFENSE TO GET CLOSER TO THE GOAL..HE IS PAID TO MAKE FIELD GOALS WHEN WE CANT ADVANCE FURTHER,...IF U DONT THINK WE LOST THIS CUZ OF THE KICKER MISSING 2 KICKS,.THEN U DONT KNOW FOOTBALL AND SHOULD JUMP OFF A ROOF.
Posted by: REAL DOLPHINS FAN | September 23, 2012 at 05:59 PM
Okay here comes all of the second guessing. You would think that out of all the professional football analysts in here one of you would actually have a job in the NFL. Nobody has to explain s&%t. We know all of the answers don't we?
The most aggravating posts come from the people looking to blame one thing or one person that caused the loss. Just got to blame it on one person. It shows you have never played an organized team sport. You win and lose as a team.
We could sit here and put blame on every unit and most players for the loss today. Everyone could have done more, NOT one person. They lost as a team. If you don't see that you just don't get it and maybe never will.

Kris, good? No. Not really. But this season is about him learning and improving; let's see where it goes from here. Houston and the Jests are good tests for him; Cromartie and Revis are scummy but good CBs, Arizona doesn't have those kind of CBs so let's see if he can pass against them
Posted by: MiamiD20 | September 23, 2012 at 06:01 PM
What is the extent of Reggie's injury? If he can't play next week we will get blown out.
We would have had a better chance with Moore. That offense we had last year was clicking under Daboll. I don't know why we broke that up. We should have kept Marshall and added another top wide receiver. Getting rid of the RT from last year was huge. I think we should have kept the HC, OC, Moore, and Marshall. That offense was close last year. Moore was ranked 11th in QB rating. Do you know that Moore had a higher QB rating last year than:
Vick, Cutler, Newton, Flacco, Dalton, and Palmer.
Posted by: Orlando Dolphan | September 23, 2012 at 06:01 PM
Daryl...
We should have been running and punting the ball AFTER Bush went down ...plain and simple....
Did you LIKE seeing the rookie QB throw from his end zone....cause I didn't...
Posted by: Kris | September 23, 2012 at 06:02 PM
As great as Mike Sherman's play calling was last week, he blew it this week. He reverted back to the Mike Sherman who was fired from disgrace in Green Bay. And was fired in disgrace from Texas A&M. RUN up the middle, then throw out passes to Hartline. We did the same thing over and over and over again last week, and it worked. This week, old man Sherman decided to throw long sideline passes, and it only worked ONCE. He kept going back to a play that wasn't working, and he cost us this game.

Come on Salguero...everyone in the stadium knew that Miami was calling a time out, so are you telling me that the O-line from New York didn't know that as well and gave up? Stop looking for the negative angle (which US media are prone to do) and concentrate on the fact that Dan Carpenter blew it today for Miami. Be happy that for the first time in 13 years Miami went for the win with under 1 minute to go rather than the tie. Yes they got the tie...but they went for the win. SHOCKING...after 13 years of "vanilla".
Posted by: John007 | September 23, 2012 at 06:03 PM
Kris RG3 Weeden all rookie QB who played today struggled. Tannehill a rookie QB in the NFL. He gets a pass at least this season. Carpenter on the other hands sucks
Posted by: Clue | September 23, 2012 at 06:03 PM
Tough loss. They had chances to win this game before overtime but they kept the Jets in the game too long. Philbin a first year coach with not alot of talented players, and losing his best offensive player did really well against a clown car team.
The Jets are a really bad team.
Got to say I'm happier with Tannehill than having Sanchez.
They played hard, just got to learn how to win these close games.

..I want to hear all of those who are critical of the playcalling by Sherman to day explain. It is your opinion and that is fine. But I think some of you guys are on a different planet..Seriously. Take a good look at how the game played out. We had a chance to win twice...TWICE. Once in regulation, once in overtime..Tell me what you would have done and how..And just saying opening it up and letting Tannehill do this or that is week sauce..With our personel, with the injury to Bush...How should he have called the game?
Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | September 23, 2012 at 06:05 PM
Mando, can you find anything else to be negative about?--its called trying to ice the kicker, like Rex Ryan did a few minutes before.....yeah, bad luck, but no "explaining" needed......its done all the time....."failed strategy"?.....how was he supposed to know what would happen?---Carpenter is the one that needs to be explaining......

Carpenter lost this game!!!!! Seeing sporano jump around like he just won the Super Bowl reminds me of when we would kick a field goal!!!!! I don't know why he was so happy and jumping around his offense sucked!!! Typical sporano
Posted by: johnsdolphins | September 23, 2012 at 06:07 PM
Tannehill and Bess need to develop a chemistry, and the Fins would be a whole different team.
Bess, Hartline, and Fasano are all quality receivers. Maybe not world beaters, but quality. Right now, Bess is an afterthought for Tannehill. And, it is hurting the Fins.

Now, For some real insight.
Who was the Leading Rusher Today? D. Thomas(69yds)
2nd? Bush(61yds)
Oh and 3rd? J.Lane (48 yds)
We got 185 yds on the Ground on 43 carries!!!
The Jets didn't have 1 player over 45 yds and only got 88 yds as a Team.
T-hill was going against a Better Secondary and he Still completed a higher Pct% than the JETS.
Also, Where do U get T-hill is inaccurate. For a guy to only have 19 college starts. He completed a High PCT% in College. 61% and it goes as high as 67% if u take away the Drops in College. Right Now as a Rookie he is completing 58%. Not Bad for a Rookie!!!
Weeden is at 52%
Luck is at 56%
RG3 is at 66%
and Wilson is at 61%
Compared to a 4 year starter like sanchez(53%)
-------------------------------------------------------
And to the Clown still comparing Long and M.RYan 5 years later!!!!!! Give it up!!!!
Ur telling Dashi u would rather have M.Ryan than T-Hill. Honestly!!!
Give T-Hill some Weapons. Or 4 ProBowlers like M.Ryan!!!
Posted by: Dashi (MHM I BE) | September 23, 2012 at 06:08 PM
and I agree that Sherman came up small today.....several REALLY questionable calls, including on that last drive where they're throwing deep, very low percentage, instead of trying to gain another few yards to get a closer FG.....that was 2nd down.....run again on 3rd, which they did, and its a shorter FG--also passed on a 3rd and 1 earlier, after they were running great--not a good game for sherman either
