Philbin: 'We have a million miles to go'

Joe Philbin, fresh off reviewing game tape of Sunday's 35-13 victory over Oakland, came into the Dolphins interview room at noon today and went absolutely bonkers with excitement about his first NFL coaching victory and Miami's first home-opener win in six years.

He was hyped. He was bouncing around. He was a different person!

No, not really.

Not at all.

In fact, Philbin made a point to his coaching staff and his players that their demeanor should be no different after this victory than it was after the opening-day loss to Houston.

"I told the team in the locker room, 'Our message to the media should be we have a long way to go.' We have to show a lot of improvement. I said to the team yesterday that seven days ago we knew we had to improve, we had to get better. We made a couple of strides but we still have a million miles to go.

"I said to the staff an hour ago, I want the mood to be the same as the Monday meeting [last week]. We have corrections we show the players every week and positives. And it should be no different than what it was last Monday."

The fact, however, is that the outcome this week was different than last week. So Philbin had to hand out his share of compliments about the Dolphins. Reggie Bush got a kudo. The Red Zone defense was good. Cameron Wake was singled out for his work versus the run.

A couple of offensive linemen also played well, according to Philbin.

"We thought Richie Incognito played a really good game, better than he did in Houston," he said. "We've been impressed with Pouncey both weeks. He plays the game the right way. There's a lot of pictures of him finishing plays and plain blocking people to the whistle and staying engaged on blockers. That was real encouraging."

But even in handing out kudos, Philbin is careful not to get too excited.

"... I don't want to give him too much or he'll start getting a big head."

The Dolphins, by the way, tackled better this week than the week before. But the theme remains. It was good. But nobody is going crazy happy.

"The good news is there's still a lot of room for improvement," Philbin said. "We have to tackle better relative to the amount of time we spend on it."

Hey this win is just one step, but it's "one giant step" for the Dolphins. Finally, we are seeing Philbin and Sherman's plan coming together. It's a totally different game plan from the yawner Henning gave us.

If this team continues to progress through the course of the season, imagine what they can do with more weapons at WR, TE and secondary - especially with good draft picks next year.

Direland,

In order to be a good team you have to draft well. If you look at the better franchises in football like GB & Pittsburgh they do it year in & year out.

Right now I look at SF as the team that is doing it right which is why they are my SB pick. They can run the ball on anyone, their defense is phenomenal, they have a QB that doesn't turn the ball over, they added WR's with Manningham & Moss & they have a great HC.

What I learned yesterday is Tanny, like Henne, can throw an out & a dig pattern. A couple of them hartline had to come back to & a slant behind him that almost killed him but, he threw those pretty well. What else?

Where are the challenging throws in traffic? Where are the tight window throws? This week he'll have to do that.

He won't have a weakness to exploit vs. the Jets with Revis in there. They stop the run & generate alot of pressure / confusion for a young QB with their blitzes.

This game will be a good baramoter for Tannys skills.

No argument whatever at this moment, RB.

Brady's close to end of the road with Bellichik too. He didnt draft Ryan Mallett to ride the pine for 5yrs. I expect to see Mallet as the starter in New England no later than year 4.

The clock's ticking. That means Brady's final year should be about 2013 season. I expect Mallett to replace Brady in 2014. Brady has this and next year to win another sb title under Bellichik. Then the hour glass runs dry.

Direland,

I like our last draft but we missed on too many picks in the four drafts before that. Not sure if Ireland should stay or go but that's up to ownership & not me. If Ross thinks we should be better than we are at the end of the season I can't blame him. After all it is his money....

Yesterday's Gone--

Fu bing lu moy chan! Ni po mu lingtao tzu myung yang!

Hai Po Nok Chow!

Well, YG, if you look at it closely, the Clock has always been ticking, for all of Us.

YG,

I hope you're right. I'm tired of NE dominating this division.

Reality Check,

Revis didnt play yesterday. Here's your Reality check:

"Sep 17 New York Jets coach Rex Ryan is unsure if he'll have star cornerback Darrelle Revis back in the secondary when the team plays at Miami on Sunday.

Advice: Ryan says Monday that he doesn't think "you can assume" Revis will be ready to go against the Dolphins after suffering what the Jets called a "mild concussion" in the season opener against Buffalo. Revis sat out the Jets' 27-10 loss to the Steelers on Sunday. Ryan says Revis must pass the required tests, but adds that he"`looks to be doing well, so hopefully he will be playing."

This is Revis' status for now. Its possible he doesnt play in Miami Sunday.

Well, YG, if you look at it closely, the Clock has always been ticking, for all of Us.

Oscar,

Well that's depressing...but also very true.

Progress is important yesterday was nice this will give them some confidence going forward. The road still is long but Philbin has the right attitude stay the course.

Well!, that sounded like my Chinese girlfriend, once upon my While.

She was from Taiwan.

With or w/o Revis, he is going to have to stick throws into traffic. Either cause of protection breakdowns or very tight coverage.

With or w/o Revis, I don't see Miami's WR's being very open. Tanny is gonna have to do alot of forcing balls & this is what we need to see him be able to do. We need to know he can do it.

Throwing outs & digs is great n all but, that isn't gonna win you many games against very good defenses. Good D's have good corners. Those lil out routes aren't gonna be there.

He's gonna have to throw in the middle & into tight spaces. I'm looking forward to see if he can do it or not.

We Have RBs: You remember a couple of years ago under Singletary that SF was in trouble and everyone thought Alex Smith was a bust. Now look at that team under Harbaugh.

In short, coaching says a lot. I'm giving a lot of kudos to Philbins' coaching staff for this win and HOPEFULLY they'll be able to make good use of what on paper appears to be a mediocre roster.

Miller made the most of his opportunity.

Where does this put D. Thomas when he's ready to play?

I predict Thomas will be gone at the end of this season.

Reality,

Im not overly concerned. Yesterday this coaching staff showed an ability to make haftime adjustments on both sides of the ball. Something in Miami we also havent seen in a very long time.

It would be nice to score at least 4tds and zero "fistpumpers" with Sparano in the building. LOL

What would Thomas be worth if he's traded?

Tiny little Broad.

Reality Check: I'm guessing the Jets game will be a battle at the line. The Jets will obviously try to shut down Bush and force Tanny to throw. Jorvorskie did some solid blockings for Bush and Miller yesterday. Let's hope he can still produce next Sunday.

Reality check @ 2: 25...good post....

I talk to myself

D. Thomas going nowhere, we need a rb with some type of legit power ability. Lane is primarily a blocking back. Good weapon to have as a lead bloker for a rb like D Thomas in shrt yardage situations.

Turn Lane into a ball carrier who's going to lead him into the hole. Lane will only get enough carries to keep the defense honest and occassionally catch out of the backfield.

Hartline makes tough catches and rarely drops balls. If it's around his hands more often than not he will come down with it. 1000 yrds seems very realistic with him being Tannehill's favorite target obviously after 2 games. Stop it with the # bs oh he's a 3 or 4 at best... He's the #1 now and he's earned it.

@2:05

At Least U got Dashi Right. Dashi will allow it.

Hey , Armando are U convinced Yet? Philbin is the Real Deal.

Yes, We haven't had a Coach with this much "Integrity" since Shula. Dashi didn't Know Coaches LIE till Jimmy Johnson. MF'er lied to me about Dan Marino. Did Dan Dirty! Way to end the Mans Career JJ. We could've had Barry with Marino for One last run, like The Bronco's are doing with Peyton.

We Finally have a Coach that Calls it like He sees it! Plus he's only 2 years Removed from a SuperBowl run. Philbin Knows what it takes to get there. Plus, he's use to winning the last Couple Years. He has Expectations. Sporano didn't even win the Job, It was given to Him.

And Don't Give me Ross wanted Fisher. If Ross Really Wants a Guy He will fire Ireland. Ross is a Smart Man and wants some credit for this teams Success. Philbin gives him that. Ireland Definitely gives him that!! If Ireland turns out to be a Good GM and happens to get all of his growing Pains out the Way (Member This Was Ireland's 1st "Real" GM Job. And Some Would Say he has only been the "Real" GM for 2 years.), Watch Out The Scout Might Be a Find.

Ireland Was the Scout(Assistant GM) in Dallas when they got all those player for PArcells. Romo, Ware, Witten, Barber and many other.

Hey a "REAL BAD GM" will have us screwed for next year. Look at the JEts. Way Over the Cap Next Year and Not even their full stock of picks. Or The Bills, Almost at the Cap and Alot of OVERPAID players!!

Next Year, We Will be the Youngest and Strongest Team In the Division!!!!!!!!!

The Patriot's did a Good job with their Wr's? Yeah Right, the pats only have 2 wr's and Welker appears to be done. Dashi said it during Preseason we have the best Wr Group in the Division(W/The Secret Weapon Starting). We have at least 3 OK wr's. The Jets have 1, The Bills have 1, and the Pats have 2.

The Pats have 2 Te's, But 1 just went down and all those TE's they picked up everyone was riding Suck!

Also, NATE SOLDER IS A BUST!! YES, DASHI HAS ALWAYS STATED THIS AS FACT!!

If I agree with you.....then u r cool in my book.....

BUT.....if I dont agree with you......well......forget me appreciating your opinion.....my way or the highway.......limp bizcuit style

Reality Check over under Tannheill throws a pick 6 this week?

We Have RBs: You remember a couple of years ago under Singletary that SF was in trouble and everyone thought Alex Smith was a bust. Now look at that team under Harbaugh.

Direland,

Well said. Just look at Drew Brees & the Saints w/o Sean Peyton....

I take it that Reality Check takes exception to my agreeing with his post @ @:25....let me educate you as to WHY I agreed with your post...

Then...you will be a little bit wiser...and PERHAPS be able to better conduct yourself in this forum...thus not feeling the need to Troll me...such as you did @ 2:57....

Your post was about FOOTBALL....it wasn't insulting...on the contrary...it was insightful...and well thought out....you started with a COHERENT thought...and explained why your thought is RELEVENT to this BLOG....kudos for that....

If you continue to act like an ADULT...then your REWARD is praise...and more ADULT conversation....

However...this time...you chose to follow it up with an imature impostering of myself...totaly uncalled for...and clearly unsolicited...

but...if that's how you justify your exsistence....so be it....

Still a good post @2:25 :)

BTW...Reality....

I disagree with many posters on many occasions.....

Craig M

Phins 78

More recently MiamiD20....and others...

But they will tell you that I respectful in agreeance...and disent...

As for you and the rest of your names...well....you get what you ask for....

Tick...tick...tick.....

Thanks Kris, of all the people here i still dont care about your opinion....but thank you

I figured you didn't reality check...for I have handed you your @ss on many an occasion...

but I still give credit were credit is due :)

Sometimes you credit yourself a bit too much. But we will change that, over time.

kris, I don't have time nor desire to troll bloggers.

I post what I want. If people like it? Good. If they don't? Even better.

But, I won't waste time trolling. An exercise in futility.

Ireland is going to look pretty solid when we roll into the draft thumbing our nose at Barkly and using 5 picks in the first three to solve our problems. I know it's hard to remain objective when you hate his style but give the devil his dues. His reign under Parcell's and now, to total change in direction.

I gree with those who think he needs a good dose of charm school. But, bottom line, he has us on track. IMHO.

Obviously, I am being trolled now by someone who dislikes you, Kris. 3:10 & 3:17 isn't me.

I have seen a pattern here where posts under different names spell words like they sound and not as they are supposed to be written. A good example is Kris at 3:06PM Today spelling relevent for relevant. We can be sure here that when that happens, it is the same Person, be it Kris, YG, or whatever name is under, that is writing that post.

Having my name hijcaked? Well, Big deal! I take the opportunity & hope this would serve as a lesson to people like Coalition & Craig M & others...

WHO THE F*** CARES IF SOMEONE TROLLS YOU!

Stop responding to every troll post like you achieved something. All you accomplish is to annoy other bloggers that have to sift through your sh*t posts.

That has become the biggest annoyance here. You're nonsense in response to their nonsense. Act your age!

Not your shoe size

Yesterday'sGone is a Pats Fan trying to piss on all our glory. Always talking bout Bellichik and the Ne orginization. Always saying we need to do what they do.Just go route for them...JACK @ss

Jackk: As my name suggests, I have no love for Ireland. But you're right, I have to give him credit for situating this team well for next year's draft. Now let's hope he (or if there is a new GM) don't squander it.

WE WON A GAME!!! YAHOO!!

D Thomas is worthless. Maybe a 7th rd pick.

I just went to a sandwich shop to grab lunch. I put my name down as Jorvorskie.

Jorvorskie! Now that's a football name of a bruiser. I have high hopes for this kid.

Stop trolling Jorvorskeet

So many trolls. So little time...

All you bloggers get too high when we win & too low when we loose, it never stpps !!!!!!!!!!!!. RIGHT NOW WE ARE THE SAME AVERAGE TEAM THAT OPENED THE SEASON, BUT WE ARE INDEED HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION NOW. MAKE NO MISTAKE THOUGH, WE ARE STILL AT LEAST TWO YEARS AWAY FROM SUPER BOWL CALIBUR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Has T-Hill thrown a Pick 6 All Year?

So the Jets Are "SPECIAL"!

Yeah Right. Dashi wishes Revis Plays. I bet the 1st thing Sherman does is throw a Screen his Way to J.Lane!! Show him this is a Man's Game. What's ur Money on them Slow Footed Safety's For the Jets, Or The JAV Lane Ringing Yeremiah's Bell! Trust me they will be taking Landry out in a Stretcher if He Wants to Run Head First into Oncoming Traffic!! Go Right Ahead!

The Jets Don't have a Great PAss Rush. Name 1 Pass Rusher! They Only have 3 sack for the Season as a Team.

Our O-Line IS FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW, How Many Years did that Take? It was broken Before Marino was Retired!! Marino had no line at the End.

Phiblin= The O-Line Dashi

The man Told the Ball Boy To Draft him a Smart LT, that he will Coach him to play the Right Side. None of this Veteran Stuff. He picked Jerry over Hicks. Even Before Hicks got Hurt. The line is the Best it's been in a
While.

The Left Side is almost as good as Marino's Line and I Never Remember MArino Having a RT? Always Remember Marino doing a SideStep then Quick Release. The Eyes in the Back of His Head Dashi doesn't know how he use to do that. That is Just Vision. Natural Feel in the Pocket.

Sherman has been fixing this with T-hill his whole Career. He's taking an Athletic Qb and MAking Him a Pocket Passer. Notice Why T-Hill can Scramble, He Didn't Scramble all PreSeason or 1st Game of the Season. Sherman is making him win it from the Pocket.

Next game will be fun to see, we can beat the Jets if we stop the run which we will and hit Mexican hard!! Sack pressure hits on the QB. I got the PHINS wining 20 to 17 Close game because both defense can stop the run. And you know Rex he will have a game plan to confuse Tannehill.

I win and there's a parade on Los Olas.
LMAO

Tebow time.

?

Having my name hijcaked? Well, Big deal! I take the opportunity & hope this would serve as a lesson to people like Coalition & Craig M & others...

TRANSLATION: Please don't screw up my trolling by exposing me.

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

Actually Bud, it is YOU that annoys EVERYONE and we've all asked you to stop.

You don't listen, so why should we? Live by Sword Punk, then Die by it!

Begging for a Free Pass to ignorantly antagonize everyone with all kinds of dumb aliases.

I don't think so Bub!

You don't have to rack up alot of sacks to generate pressure. DUH! The Jets dial up blitzes & do it well. This leads to rushed throws, incompletions & penalties. All as good as sacks.

You can bet Rex will have looks for the rookie that he's never seen before. If not for Rapistburger doing his best Houdhini , the Jets could have had close to 7 or 8 sacks.

Let's Hope Tanny is up to the challenge.

Coalition, your whiney blame game antics are as stale as your football posts.

I was just trolled, yet, I'm the troll? Ok buddy! Good call on that one!

Buy yourself a clue bub, if you can afford it. Now, go find yourself a spin cycle.

Next!

Best drive of the game was in the 4th QTR when the Fins drove down the field with the lead. The drove down field with mostly running it's game and few key passes by THill. Miller ran it over the left side for +10-15 yards and sent the message...YOU'RE ALL DONE!

We showed that we can man handle D-Lines. The Oakland D-Line is not a shabby unit. That's pretty impressive by the fins!

The best way for you to avoid any spelling errors, pal, is not to write long posts. Otherwise, eventually, you're going to fu-k it up. We know.

Rex does know how to dial up pressure.

His Daddy knew how to do it and he taught Junior well.

Having said that, I have to admit, I'm starting to not be so overly concerned with these things.

This Coaching Staff had gained my confidence and I believe they will have the Guys properly prepared.

Whetner or not we execute is another story for sure, but I believe they will be ready!

Anyone notice the dropped TD by Marshall in the Chicago game? 'Nuff said.

Coalition, your whiney blame game antics are as stale as your football posts.

No, no-NO! Reality Check, I was responding to YOUR TROLL.

Why don't you pay attention before blabbing off like that?

Sheesh!
