The outgrowth from battedballgate

The story du jour at Dolphins camp continues to be the four batted passes the Dolphins gave up to Houston on Sunday and all the sidebars coming out of that story.

The question is not who's fault those batted passes were. Everybody was at fault. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill needs to find a passing lane. The offensive line needs to gut-punch defensive linemen to get their hands down. Maybe coaches shouldn't be calling so many slants, particularly on three-step drops.

But this much is certain: It is an issue that has dogged Tannehill and Dolphins offensive coordiantor Mike Sherman before. I was told by Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that last season the A&M offense suffered 19 batted passes.

So this has been an issue before.

It was an issue in practice today as the first play in team period was, of course, a batted pass by defensive end Cameron Wake.

Beyond that, there is a narrative out there that one reason Houston defensive end J.J. Watt was able to be so effective in batting three of the passes against the Dolphins is that he knew the snap count and that he stole the snap count by watching Hard Knocks.

Well, that's interesting. Maybe Watt did steal the snap count. But it cannot be the reason he batted the passes.

"That makes no sense whatsoever," guard Richie Incognito said of Watt's contention. "It was so loud, we couldn't even hear the snap count. There's no way he heard it. He's just blowing smoke. Me and Jake Long were talking about this. We couldn't hear the snap count. There's no way him all the way out there could hear the snap count."

And then there's this:

"We were on silent count most of the time," Incognito said. "J.J. really has no idea what he's talking about ... It's ridiculous."

Coach Joe Philbin confirmed the Dolphins used a good bit of silent count. He wasn't sure of the percentage of plays so he estimated "20 percent" conservatively.

Regardless of whether Watt stole the snap count or not, battedballgate is a big deal to the Dolphins this week.

"A lot's been made this past week about correcting tipped passes," Incognito said. "We have to stay on [the defensive linemen]. We have to hit 'em. As soon as they jump we have to attack them and make them get their hands down."

First!

It's hard to expect much from Tannehill with the laughable talent at WR. It's hilarious considering the best way for Ireland to save his job is to make Tannehill look the best he can, yet he does nothing.

So Stephen Ross expects a playoff team this year. That's what he said. Why then did the Dolphins book the Stadium for Cirque de DeSoleil during the week Dolphins would supposedly have a playoff game?? Actions speak louder then words.

lol hilarious bobbyd , i did not know that

ross and ireland also deny we are in rebuild mode. its all about selling tickets.

Bill, did you also not know that bobbyd12 was so happy with the job ireland was doing 2 years ago that he said he earned his contract extension?

look at the tune he's singing now. flip flop!

What is good here is having Jeff Ireland around to deal with any personnel issues.

Armando,

Before you make batted balls an issue, why not take a look at the NFL stats. They keep stats on every thing. Find out 1. how many batted balls did Watt have last year and 2. How many did other NFL QBs have. Sunday may be a fluke but if Tom Brady gets balls batted (you know what I mean) maybe it's not the end of the world.

i do know this about bobbyd, i remember the fights i got into on here with him about it. i used to get ripped for stating facts in here. now looks like everyone is finally seeing what i saw coming years ago with ireland and company. but least bobbyd admits it now, hes seen the light

Does Jeff Ireland even look at college game film? Did Ireland or Philbin watch the pre-season games? It was very apparent that Tannehill has a knack for getting passes deflected. If it can't be corrected, well, there's another reason to rid of Ireland. By the way, how much info does Ross need before he gets rid of this clown? Hello Bill Polian?

Tannehill isnt the best QB on the Dolphins and Philbin knows it. Philbin is such a mealy mouth, its embarrasing to hear him speek. Hasnt this thing with the no talent Dolphins gone on long enough? How many more years of this crap football must we (fans) endure?

How are throwing lanes formed?

WTF - Did this get deleted?

Armand-oh! What was wrong with this reply? It the "Odinstank" reference wasn't deleted from the last post.

I think your Boy Toy is being a little too over-sensitive in deleting this. He can call me out of name and it's fine. But my reply, a total "Football" reply was deleted?

Was it cause I called him a Troll? If it was, just let me know. If you have one of those "Cutesy Little Pet Names" for him, I'll just use that ;)

Odinstank, What say you?, Fins 9 Oak 3..
Your thoughts please.

I should know better than to answer a Troll, but I really do want to express my opinion on this one.
When you consider the state of.........flux, that both teams are in, I wouldn't offer a guess, preciction or anything. It's just too difficult to tell with all the youth, inexperience, miscues and everything else going on with BOTH TEAMS!

Being The Homer that I am, I'm betting the Dolphins win a squeaker that ends up looking just as ugly as both teams last games.

How Ya Like Me Now?

It's speak, not speek.

Oscar The Troll, why don't you get on that little BMX bikey thing that you believe makes you manly and go jump some dirt bumps?? Oscar Canosa is in fact a psychiatrist who lives in Miami. It explains why this guy uses so many names. He enjoys this. Yea Oscar, I know. Maybe I will make an appointment, but you ain't gonna like me.

Screw Ross. Screw Ireland. Screw Philbin.

On 2 of the batted balls, the D lineman did not jump or put his hands up very much. Rather, Tanne threw it right into him.

odin, how are throwing lanes formed? Show bobbyd12 now.

We must get Reggie Bush 30 touches to have a chance to score. Can he handle it?

Battedballgate. Wow. Sticking "gate" on it really makes it interesting. Consider this commentgate. The best thing that could have happened to Tannehill were the deflected passes. It's an issue, and now he gets to work on it, and answer 500 uninteresting questions on it per press conference. that's good, it will allow him to focus on other issues without interruption.

Actually, I have a 2004 Dodge Intrepid, which I like the low-slung model for an American car.

Bobby, was Oscar one of those Mariel boat invasion people?

Oh, I love giving Psychotherapy, free for you bobbbyd12. But you are going to hear the Truth about you and yours.

Philbin needs to learn what experienced coaches like Wannstache and Sparano know: that a punt is not the worst way to end a drive. Rather, a turnover is. Second worst is a missed long FG (bad field position when you could have pinned them inside the 10).

Philbin blamed the 24 point 2nd quarter for abandoning the running game that had been working. But the playcalling ALLOWED the 24 point quarter. Read carefully please.

The bloodshed, the massacre if you will, could have been stopped AFTER THE FIRST INTERCEPTION THAT LED DIRECTLY TO A TD BY HOUSTON. After that, he could have pulled it back and ran and punted the rest of the half. It would have been "boring" for the average fan, but then the score at half time might have been 14-3 instead of the disaster it was. Still in the ball game.

This is how Wannstache and Sparano won games 17-14 and were able to post 11-5 seasons.

The running game and D were okay in the first 1.5 quarters. Actually 2nd half too.

Or after 2 INTs. Don't throw it again and allow the 3rd one!!!!! 3 consecutive plays!!!!!!

Jeez. Ball control, time of possession, field position -- these things still win ball games.

The worst that People resent is for somebody to tell them the Truth.

You heard it here first: Andrew Luck is a bust. RGIII was the pick. Andrew Luck will have a "decent" NFL career. Very good 2nd tier starter. But he is NOT going to replace Peyton or duplicate his career.

Bank on it.

Your posts can not be taken seriously because you yourself do not take them seriously. So basically you are wasting your time by writing in here because people just shake their heads and laugh as they pass over your posts. If that's what you're going for then great, keep up the wonderful work, everyone is ignoring you. But if your trying to get people to listen and maybe change a few peoples minds you're going about it the wrong way. Odin, Good Lord almighty, I To agree, A low scoring game, Fins 9 Oak 3, Like I said before only a game that Sporono would love.)Of Course the (Old OC Henney) Would love this type pf game.(Kinda like a mother love's a ugly child)(Ask your mother)(No offence).... GO FINS

We haven't seen the missed FG problem yet (1 game) that we DID see in preseason. I'm hoping he was just giving the kicker some work and not being stupid when he kept going for 52 yard FGs in preseason. You generally should not do that. What you do from that kind of field position is PUNT with our great punter, pin them inside the 5, and then play defense. That is how you win games, folks.

FIELD POSITION. NO TURNOVERS.

Did you notice that Houston was unable to score on our defense when it started from its own territory? Literally? All the TDs came only after we gave them the ball at our own 40 or so.

It's all about field position.

Even in today's "passing league."

Crickets

REally battedballgate? Trying to make something out of the 31st ranked team in the NFL. I guess there isn't anything to really talk about.

Hehehe...

OMG, until Tannehill goes w/o a tipped or batted pass, every inbetween games this year will have a reference to it.

Dont know whats going to be worse, this team mostly sucking this year(you can bet it will), or these overredundant blog topics plaguing like bubonic. Either way, it going to make for a long season being even longer.

The dolphins tasted their first regular season defeat at houston. Now their looking to continue to build on their losses throughout the whole season in order to achieve their ultimate goal, the history chase to infamy.

Now , be apart of the losing tradition of these Miami Dolphins and jeer them on the road to 0-16. Theres no better place in the world to be than in sun life stadium this sunday to witness the start of another home losing streak.

PLEASE NOTE:*Paper bags are allowed in the stadium at reduced costs only if you support the chase to infamy cause*

Cocoa Joe, no Oscar is from Spain but probably born in Cuba. These so called doctors from Cuba come over to America and work at Mickey Ds cause their diploma is worthless. Or they go to Spain and become Psyco analysts.

ROTFLMAO-This is truly the irony of ALL things IRONIC!

Monkey Boy(aka Sparrow/Continental/jcb, etc, etc...)was swinging all over Tannehill's nads after the draft. He even actually had some serious football conversations(by that I mean, not just his overly repeated one liners)about how great Tannehill was going to be.

Right up until he was named the starter that is. And now with the tipped passes, he's taking it to the next level. Anything to try and get a rise out of someone-lol.

It was like last week. He was blasting Ireland for having drafted Gates. Just running Gates into the ground.

THE DAY AFTER GATES was cut, he was blasting away about how dumb Ireland was for letting him go when we have no receivers-ROTFLMAO!

Troll Boy, don't look to Ireland when searching for stupid. Just look in the mirror-lol.

PS: Can you please change up some of your dumb wore out one liners. They nasty and stale.........like your Breath ;)

But I gotta be careful cause Oscar knows Jui Jitsu Bwahahahah Oscar calls himself a professional but comes on here using multiple names and trolling. He shouldn't be allowed to have a license IMO.

There was something aignificant from Marino today(finally). He said he took some "pocket awareness" classes while in Miami, I believe.

Neither, bobbyd12, I(We) are from a special breed of Borns in Cuba which many People don't know, yet.

A "friend" of Ross' told Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that general manager Jeff Ireland will be in "serious trouble" if the Dolphins don't have a winning record this year. Ross reportedly doesn't have "blind faith" in Ireland. Another source said that Ireland would probably not survive the season if the Dolphins went 5-11. After all, Ireland's roster doesn't seem to be getting any better.

These are the same sort of friends of Ross who whispered to The Herald about Tony Sparano's job security last season. They were right, although they also helped poison the Miami season before it started. We've only played game, folks. These kind of articles in a local paper are a little ridiculous this early.

Ross might need new friends and a new general manager.

If you want to know why a 6'4 Qb has trouble with batted balls you have to look at Tannehill's body posture. He does not stand tall and confident. His back is curved and his chest is sunken in. He throws from a slight "side arm" stance. Look a Brady's posture and the RT's...its worrisome to me.

I think folks are jumping the gun a bit, rating the rookie qb's after just one start.

As far as the Dolphins go I'm more concerned about the defense at the moment than battedballgate.

It's been several seasons now where we hold, hold on 1st and 2nd down, then on 3rd down give up whatever number of yards that are needed for the first.

Chances are if we would have stuck to the running game Sunday our defense would have given up just enough to lose.

I would prefer for us to stick to the up tempo spread offense...we just need some freakin talent!

Finally I have to agree with everyone on Ireland. It just doesn't seem like we are trying to find top players. We traded away two of our best players for 2nd rd picks....Which would be fine if we used the picks for talent somewhere besides o-lineman.

Case in point. Two Buc's rookies Martin and Barron already paying dividends.

Well, what else can happen to Us? Ross is no friend of Ours, Man.

Again. How are throwing lanes formed? I'd like to know.

By o-lineman pushing defenders in different directions??

Neither, bobbyd12, I(We) are from a special breed of Borns in Cuba which many People don't know, yet.

WTF does this mean???

You guy's are truly clueless.

To ADD to Cognito's logic....

Knowing the snap count DOES NOT = BATTED BALL....

Alot of other things have to happen to=that....

knowing the snap count might = a sack...

it might cause an false start....

but it does NOT equal a batted pass....

when those goons jump up to bat a pass we need to hit right in the mouth and put their butts on the ground!!!

Ireland's draft room looks like one of Wile. E Coyotes plans. Throwing lanes are formed by not throwing it into the D-lineman's raised arms. Polian is starting to break down past dolphins drafts. He will be here soon.Tanne will be good once he learns to not stare down receivers. That is what it is. Dan "The Man" needs to teach him the skill of looking off a receiver. It would really help if a Fins receiver could get open. That's the big problem. he doesn't trust that any of these guys can get open. Great Qb's throw before the WR's make their breaks. poor Tanne can't afford that luxury.

Hell, I dont know either, Dolfan Rick, but this guy better find them.

No Offense, But that's kinda funny.
IMHO.

Just the facts, dilweed sucked and so does tannehill. He is the king of batted balls. He is no franchise qb. Ireland will be gone next season and the dolphins will be drafting another qb next year. Just the facts.

What a shame... You can't even buy a Miami Dolphins jersey without worrying about the dude being on the Team next year.

there seems to be a lot of clue-less ten year old's on this blog.

Good evening Folks!

I liked this post. I did notice how well our D played, even though they were on the field for something in the neighborhood of 40 to 45 minutes.

--------------------------------------------------

What I saw was very encouraging. For being at the begining of a rebuild, I think we have a SOLID foundation upon which to build. The number of Picks we have in next years draft will allow us to address the areas of concern as well.

The D-Line is just about Top 5. If anyone steps up and gives us a second pass rusher opposite Wake, we will be Top 5. At certain points last Sunday, Coyle was playing Starks at his natural position of DE. It worked out good and helped the rest of the Line apply pressure. I don't think Starks is the answer though. He's definitely an upgrade over Odrick and Misi, but he's too valuable at Tackle and is getting up there in years.

We brought back Baker because of McDaniels injury. But I suspect the answer there is already on the roster. Ireland found a gem in undrafted Rookie DT Kheeston Randle. The point being, we are ALL set along the interior D-line. Excellent mix of versatile players.

At End we already have the potential to jump into the top 5. Wake and Starks(on passing downs)are stellar! Vernon and Odrick have shown skills, but have yet to establish themselves as being the answer. It's possible with either one. Vernon seems to be the better pass rusher, while Odrick is the more complete player. Odrick's ability to play inside and out is a big plus. Even if he doesn't prove to be the answer, he already looks to be a great depth/rotational guy.

Derrick Shelby is the wildcard here. Another undrafted rookie that's contributing already. Another GEM of a find by Ireland. In my opinion, Shelby is the perfect mix of Odrick and Vernon. He's a complete 3 down player who only needs to perfect his pass rushing abilities.

Going forward, this D-Line will be a beast. Every team is always looking for more pass rushers and if we find one or one of our guys elevate, this will be/IS ateam strength for the next DECADE!

(With a good defense consistently keeping you in games, ANYTHING can happen on any given Sunday!)

It sucks that were rebuilding, but I LOVE the direction were taking.........ALREADY!

I know I said it was squashed but I lied. I was laughed at for my opinion! :) Kris, Pennington agrees with me too, not his throwing motion. Read the story at the palm post.

Its simple....Tannehill has zero pre-snap vision. He is a lock and load, vacant lot, QB. He only sees half the field post-snap.

Ala...Matt Leinart.
