« Miller and Thomas in a mini competition for snaps | Main | Tannehill versus the Raiders and the blitz »

Thursday practice report update here

The Dolphins are on the practice field. So are the Jets, presumably. And here's what's happening.

Firstly, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan told reporters cornerback Darrelle Revis, who had been nursing a concussion, has been cleard for contact. Barring a setback, Revis is expeted to play against the Dolphins. That's good for the Jets.

That's bad for the Dolphins.

I asked wide receiver Brian Hartline what happens if Revis plays Sunday and the New York coaches decide he should defene Miami's most productive receiver (so far) on every snap.

"I couldn't tell you. It depends on our game plan, it depends on what we want to do. It depends if Reggie [Bush] is running down their throat. Again, I'm going to be prepared for every situation I can be, but if he is, I'm going to look forward to it."

For the Dolphins, Kevin Burnett is not practicing at all today due to some sort of right leg issue. He has a noticeable limp as he's walking around today.  Jason Trusnick is the next man up if Burnett cannot play.

Tony McDaniel (knee) also is not practicing.

Finally, earlier today I told you the Dolphins are working in both Daniel Thomas and Lamar Miller in that No. 2 running back spot.

It looks as if Thomas is the guy based on his ability to pass-block better than Miller. That doesn't mean Miller will automatically be inactive. Maybe the team can get him in some sort of package, like maybe on screens or something. But it seems Thomas is the guy.

"WHRB's, you're absolutely right.

Being 31st pass D really doesn't have anything to do with it though. S. Smith gives up play after play. Never comes up with a key stop when needed.

The TD to Johnson at the end of the 1st half. Then 2 consecutive 3rd down completions at him for in the 3rd quarter for first downs. He doesn't play big in big spots.

He is not a #1 CB. If Ireland had ANY brains, he'd let Smith walk. He is a decent #2 DB. In no way, shape or form does he deserve the kind of money he's going to be asking."

Reality check,

Being 31st ranked against the pass doesn't have anything to with it??? Everytime I see Smith he's playing off the ball & letting the receivers catch the ball. We're allowing too many receptions for too many yards & not forcing TO's.

I don't believe Smith is good enough to be a starter. Same is true for Vontae. The consistency has not been there for either player. Smith is at best a pretty good 3rd CB.

Found this so far:

"Linebackers Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett have not a single fumble recovery in a combined 46 games with the Dolphins."

DC,

Not a great stat for guys that are making about $15 Million this year combined.

We Have RB's,

It sounds like your belief that there are lots lot of quality CB's out there. Thee isn't. Dolphins just signed Marshall to a $5 mil a year contract and he's maybe only slightly above average. Just every team is screaming for help at CB. Raiders just cut the two kids they drafted in the 3rd and 4th rounds last year. Bills have some great talent at CB and it's already coming under scrutiny. It's a league wide epidemic. If Smith were to go somewhere else he would start, largely because of his size and athleticism. I'm not saying he's great but there's a lot worse. And I'll say for my money Smith has been a lot more consistent than Vontae.

"I'm undecided on Smith. I think he's recieved very poor coaching since he's been in the league. I agree he's a poor tackler but for the most part he's a good cover corner. I don't think it would take huge money to bring him back. I like his size and his athleticism. I'd like to see how the year goes before making a decision on him."

The tackling is not even the biggest problem with him. Yes he's soft & not physical but it's about how many receptions he allows & how few TO's he produces. Asante Samuel was not a great tackler or very physical but b/c he forced so many INT's he was considered a pretty good CB.

WHRB's, stats & rankings are for losers because they are deceiving.

We gave up alot of pass yards to the Raiders who were down big the entire 2nd half & couldn't run. They are not an offensive enigma.

Against Houston, with many weapons, we weren't awful. Shaub had 266 yards.

Stats are not a good indicator if you are good or bad because there are too many circumstances involved.

S. Smith is simply not a #1 DB. He's a decent #2.

Sparono and Ryan partied with Ryans wife's feet "and doz type a tings" . When things got messy Sparono said "We'll look at da film and get dat cleaned up"
They all drank cheap wine, ate fritos and fist pumped in glee!

We Have RB's,

I was never much of an Assante Samuel fan. He's too much of a gambler for my liking. It's hit and miss with this guy. I believe that's why the Pats let him go and the Eagles replaced him.

I'm not saying Smith is a number one but he gets little or no help from a guy like Clemmons. I think Smith could be a better player with better coaching and better help at safety. At the price, I'd keep him because of his physical abilities.

Gotta say, you're one of the guys I like debating this stuff with on here, We Have RB's. Are viewpoints are sometimes different but I don't believe we've ever had a problem getting into name-calling or insults. Your points are well made and thought out and while they may be counter to how I feel about things, I can certainly see things from your point.

Always a pleasure man....

There are some REALLY good CB's out there like Revis, Haden, Jonathan Joseph, Finnegan, Leon Hall, Corey Webster, Nnamdi, Champ Bailey, Carlos Rogers, etc. The problem is that we don't have one of them. LOL!!!

The only solution at finding a legitimate CB w/o breaking the bank is to draft one. With the extra 2nd (will be high b/c it's Indy's) & 3rd round pick we MUST find both a WR & a CB in next year's draft.

Bottom line--Blame whoever you want but we missed on both Vontae & Smith.

Craig,

Agreed. Unlike some of these freaks on here I enjoy talking about my team & the NFL. I have no reason to argue with people who are ACTUAL fans of this team like yourself, DC, MiamiD20, etc.

WHRB's, stats & rankings are for losers because they are deceiving.

Realist,

That's very true. Stats can be very deceiving sometimes but is their any secondary in football that forces as few T.O.'s as we do???

Personally I'd just like to see Smith play tighter coverage so he can break up more passes down & make some plays on the ball.

Things to be thankful for:

Just a minor observation that might just become a really big deal. With everyone cued up to comment on the improved aspects of Dolphin team play I submit our largest boost has been in the coaching department.

I too saw the Houston game and the five minute farce that cost us the game. But halftime adjustments were made. Tips were eliminated in the second half, passing yardage given up was cut in half and, not at the expense of the ground game.

It didn’t stop there. We got behind against Oakland. When was the last time Miami trailed at the half and adjusted the game plan to win in the second half.

Rizi is doing such a good job with ST’s that I can finally go to bed at night without cussing out Dave Wannstedt. Our DL and OL are highly respected and we no longer use our timeouts as a linus blanket for thumb sucking coaches who can’t keep up with the game.

In short, it’s nice to no longer have to simplify our game plan so the head coach can understand it.

We have a lot to be grateful for and with 10 pics in the upcoming draft, 5 in the first 3 rounds, and 50 to 60 million in cap money, one could even be excused for feeling a little kindness for our GM.

Don’t peg your serenity totally on winning. We want to improve each week and aim for 2013.

Go fins!

We Have RB's,

I agree with the list you've given us on CB's. Can't argue with any of those. But if there's 32 teams in the lague that means there's 64 starting CBs (my momma didn't raise no dumb kids...LOL). You've given a list of about 10-12 guys. Colts didn't have anybody so they traded for Davis. IMO, Smith is a starting corner in this league and if the Dolphins don't re-sign him he will start somewhere else. I actually think we can get by with Marshall and Smith but I want to see upgrades at safety. We have so many other needs, including WR, TE and rushing linebacker, I'm not certain we can afford to spend a high pick at CB. I'm confident with a better pass rush and upgraded safety position we can improve the secondary.

Okay, so apparently I've turned into someone that has conversations with themselves...LOL!!!

The Miami Dullfins are now 30th in the NFL Power Rankings. WHOPEEE!!

"I'm confident with a better pass rush and upgraded safety position we can improve the secondary."

Craig,

There's no question that a better pass rush will improve our secondary which is why it's CRITICAL in the NFL to get pressure on the opposing QB.

I honestly need to see more of Clemons before I know he's not the answer. I thought Jones played very well against the Raiders. Bear in mind this is still a new defense for everyone. I believe a big reason why Starks hasn't missed a beat is b/c he used to play in a 4-3 at Tennessee. Starks just plays well wherever we put him & Soliai looked great against the Raiders as well.

Surprisingly, the Miami Dolphins have yet to sell enough tickets to ensure that their No. 1 rivalry game will be televised Sunday.

The Dolphins were granted an extension by the NFL until Friday in the hope of selling 85 percent of non-premium tickets needed under the league's revised blackout policy for Sunday's game against the New York Jets at Sun Life Stadium to be televised locally.

JackK,

All good points. It's nice to have finally have competent coaches.

We Have RBs,

It's funny, we see it differently as far as Smith and Cleemons are concerned. I've seen enough of Clemmons to know he's not good enough and you apparently have seen enough of Smith. For my money, it's Clemmons who is constantly beat and constantly taking bad angles. To me he's the weak link back there.

RBs

reality check, you are still talking about stats, did you read my post above in which stats are for losers? it doesnt matter what the stats say. stats say Dansby is a good LB but if you watch him play you will see why he's #2 on the most overpaid list for Forbes. Get a grip you arent sensible you dont have a clue what you are talking about LOL

For the guy who likes to attack while they are away. OK, Ur Telling me "Mark Ingram" only gained 474 yds in 10 games, With No Feature Back Ahead of Him. Is Ingram Starting this Year?

Again he is a 1st Rounder!!!!! Not a Bottom of a 2nd Rd RB!!

Even Steven Ridley is Starting in NE. And we all Know D.Thomas will be starting if R.Bush wasn't on the Team(L.Miller will beat him out by the end of the Year.)

D. Murray Starts in Dallas. Now tell me why Ingram isn't Starting?

Oh, and We don't even have to compare Ingram to D.Thomas! It's against Mike Pouncey Fool!

Remember what Dashi said, U guys wanted him as a 1st Rounder!! Meaning U clowns wanted Ingram over Pouncey!!! Not over Thomas!!!!!!!!!!! (Stop Nit Picking)

Thomas is Compared against the 2nd rounder's NE Picked Last Year. They Picked 2 RB's With D.Thomas and D.Murray still on the Board!

We Picked D.Thomas because he can also run the WildCat! Remember Sporano was the Joke.

But Who is a Better Pass Catcher Ingram or D.Thomas?

Also who plays with Drew Brees? Nobody plays the Run when they Play the Saints!!!

So Ur telling Dashi, Ingram is Even More injury Prone than Thomas and he got less yards with a Better Offense!!!

Still doesn't look like we have learned to defend against tight ends.
Dustin Keller should be suiting up on Sunday.
Him and Santonio Holmes are a real worry.
Other than that, the Jets don't look very scary on offense.

Tim,

We haven't learn to play against TE's? Who's caused a problem for us in the first two games? 'Phins have done a nice job shutting TE down.

Truly, if there are going to be more Jets Fans than Miami Fans in the stands I'll rather not watch the Game. I'll listen to it on the Radio.

There's always more Jet fans at this game.

D Thomas = 3 Irescum busts

I believe he is over selling his World beaters and the Jets take it more seriously than he thinks but the man made a good point as well regarding what we've become in NFL circles, sad!!

Posted by: fin4life | September 20, 2012 at 03:41 PM

We can't do anything about the past and what we've become.

But we can look forward to beating the snot out of the jets Sunday!

Being regarded as lowly as we currently are, is whats going to make this re-build/comeback so sweet!

Philbin is on the right track and he has Ireland right where he should be: Under His Thumb!

PS: Ireland or no Ireland, we have a solid foundation FINALLY and will get better each and every week from here on in! F How any of them regard us.

Go Team!

-Odin- ;)

M.Ingram=1st Rd Bust!!

We need to get behind Jeff Ireland immediately or we might lose him to the Jets. After losing Tony Sparano to our arch-rivals, this would be way too much to bear. Several of my acquaintences who are very prominent Jets fans, tell me that the Jets would hire Jeff Ireland in a heartbeat, and that many Dolphins fans have no idea how lucky the Dolphins are to have Jeff Ireland as GM. The thought of Tony Sparano fist-pumping and Jeff Ireland selecting players for the Jets is a prospect just too horrible to consider.

I really think Armstrong, Hartline, Bess could be productive when all are healthy & Bush is playing at his current level. Jets will key on Bush & Hartline & Bess. It would be nice if Bess & Armstrong can step up.

I say you pitch to Lane on a screen pass and let Revis tackle him. Do that at least 3 times. You'll see how we'll make Revis think about retirement...

Hey Mark,

Kevin Burnett replaced Crowder. Torbor and Ayodele were backups to Crowder.

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE TIRED OF THE LOSING! HELP MAKE A CHANGE!

Watching the Thurs. night game and could have told Cam that if he runs left on the Giants he better take the option RB with him that way because as great an athlete as he is he isn't going to out run or out muscle JPP that way.

Already on 2 occasions the Giants have shown great contain on the edge especially off LDE with JPP. Also gotta love the ZERO on Cam's chest with ZERO respect to the pitch.

At some point he'll likely hit them with a play but gotta love those G-Men DE's and LB's not biting on the option and making Newton make quicker decisions, it helps a bunch although with that G-Men DL and their athleticism.

Who is the better QB right now overall.
Eli or Payton..anyone watching the game?

I've never ever ever liked SEAN SMITH. he's terrible. Every completion I see him 2 steps behind. Wow. He looks great in otas.and training camps because he's going against the weakest WR corps in the NFL. Bravo. VD was WAAAAY better

BOYCOTT IS ON,

listen buddy, I have a suggestion for you, blow me.

Also. If the PHINS run at the Jets between the tackles they can have some success, with big boy lane lead blocking, Revis won't be attempting any type of contact. Plus that opens up the passing game, I got my boys wining a close game though.

G-Men going to give the Panthers things to think about all night with JPP going to RDE and batting it back in Newton's face.

G-man are up front nasty! Cam is going to be RUNING for his life Tonite, the key to beating the panthers is containing Cam N. Force him to hurry his throws.

Who is the better QB right now overall.
Eli or Payton..anyone watching the game?

Publicado por: ray | September 20, 2012 at 08:58 PM

Right now, today it's Eli hands down. Payton threw alot of wounded ducks on Monday night and the arm isn't near what it once was. In this game though the Giants are showing that they maybe the one team with the athletic enough DE,s to cut off the option on Newton. Cam seems a bit thrown off with the speed of JPP, Osi and Tuck.

Cam Newton must suck he gets the ball batted at the line!(sARCASM)

The Asinine comments of some people.

Peyton and Vick have had 3 int's games already.

Let's give T-hill a Chance!! Before u guys make him a Bust!!

Also, Chad Henne's 2nd Start came in his 2nd Year!!!!!!!!!!

So all the Asinine Comparisons Of these As_Clowns is Ridiculous!!!!!!

T-hill is already head and Shoulders better than Henne!!

HE DIDN'T HAVE TO WAIT A YEAR TO START!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and our O-line is horrendous. I have no idea why you guys seem to think it's solved. The QB runs for his life every pass play. Run blocking, sure. Pass blocking. Atrocious.

G-man are up front nasty! Cam is going to be RUNING for his life Tonite, the key to beating the panthers is containing Cam N. Force him to hurry his throws.

Publicado por: ray | September 20, 2012 at 09:07 PM

It's really something the way the Giants are forcing him to hurry the option with their speed up front, there zeroing in on him and that option toss he likes practically across the line of scrimmage is being cut off. As good as Cam is I'll take it everyday if he has to go back in the pocket and beat you with strictly the pass!

BOYCOTT IS ON
THERE IS A LOT OF JI APOLOGIST
HERE. THEY WILL BITE YOUR HEAD OFF!
BUT YOU ENTITLE TO YOUR OPINON!
I'm not going to boycott because I love my team, I just dislike JI! That's the only person on the PHINS organization that I dislike.

Any player or coach not on the Dolphins stinks. Get it?

giants showing why they are the super bowl champs, eli is unreal

17-0 Giants with the entire 2nd Qrt. still to go! Interesting now to see Newton play because he's going to have to throw more given the option is being diagnosed and handled by the Giants DL which is owning it, by the way the Giants RB Andre Brown was cut 7 times??? Looks like he'll go over 100 rushing before half either the Panthers are that bad or Ireland missed an acorn (sarcasm)

I'm not going to boycott because I love my team, I just dislike JI! That's the only person on the PHINS organization that I dislike.

DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe Eli scored a higher Wonderlic than Peyton. He's a very strange QB.

Archie Manning must have had a lot of little QBs running around his sac.

I'm watching Truman State and Central Missouri on the College Football Network.

I swear I saw Ireland up in the Press Box - FURIOUSLY - "Taking Notes".

He had a JacK & Coke in one and a Big Cigar in the other. Smiling Ear to Ear of course, with that, "I'm Smarter-in Everybody" look in his eye.

With 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, I figured Philbin would ban him from the Senior Bowl this year.

Truman State and Central Missouri(Gulp....)?

C'Mon Jeffy!!!!

The best way to neutralize speed is to make it go in the direction you desire.

I understand that Miami needs a RB they can count on to block. That will be true this week more then it will be the next 4 or 5 weeks. However, holding the Ryan Tannehill pick out as "obvious" ... And looking at the remaining picks, Reggie Miller has all the makings of a "star" in the NFL. He looks like one, runs like one and has the speed and elusive running style that good and great RB's have from day one. SOME backs take time to develop. And thats fine. But the REALLY, REALLY great ones have that "certain thing" that you also see in QB's. It is either there... Or its not. With Reggie Miller... I saw it at THE U... And I still see it now. Sorry to say Daniel Thomas is still trying to find stride. And if BLOCKING is why they want you on the feild as a running back. Then your NOT likely a great runner. Not that hes not a good player, i'm sure he is. But great runners are left in the starting roster to RUN FIRST, blpcl second. When Miller gets hos block on, Thomas may find reps hard to come by

With 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, I figured Philbin would ban him from the Senior Bowl this year.

LMFAO!!! Then wondering if your serious with knots in stomach?? There's an acorn running up and down the field for N.Y. called Andre Brown who is over 100 rushing with half the 2nd Qrt to go, if Ireland is watching he's thinking big FA cash while trading Bush for multiple 7th rounders, I have seen that look in his eye !!

They're going to end up cutting D Thomas but they're dragging it out so Ireland doesnt appear as stupid as he is.

Oh, and our O-line is horrendous. I have no idea why you guys seem to think it's solved. The QB runs for his life every pass play. Run blocking, sure. Pass blocking. Atrocious.

Posted by: Marc | September 20, 2012 at 09:09 PM

No offense Marc, but this post is atrocious.

Do they need work on pass blocking? For sure? Did they give up a bunch of sacks? NOPE!

Are they starting a rookie and another guy that almost ate his way out of the league? YEP! Have they shown great improvement week to week? YEP!

Despite the need for better pass blocking, NOBODY in their right mind can call the one of the best run blocking O-Lines in the NFL atrocious-PERIOD!

From Pouncey to Long, they're GREAT. John Jerry and Jonathon Martin are coming on like Gangbusters! This Line is YOUNG and it has GREAT Leadership.

While you have your right to an atrocious opinion, NO THANKS! I think I'm gonna go with Reggie Bush's opinion on the matter.

Derek4,

I think Lamar Miller (Reggie played for the Pacers) still isn't all the way back from the knee injury mentally myself but before it looked like a top 10 pick, IMO! If that is you long time Bro, by the way Cam coming from behind in a one dimensional scheme looking to throw 1st is a different player. Great talent but seems lost without the option which the Giants DE's have shut down, ooooops! Cam just tossed a pick down by 20 this one getting ugly!

Who is Reggie Miller? I know he never played at The U.

While you have your right to an atrocious opinion, NO THANKS! I think I'm gonna go with Reggie Bush's opinion on the matter.
