Just the facts:
The first play of team drills in practice today? A tipped pass at the line of scrimmage by defensive end Cameron Wake. The pass off Ryan Tannehill's hand fell harmlessly incomplete.
This issue needs work, folks.
Former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer was just on a conference call and said the issue is not Tannehill's fault. He blamed predictability of play-calling.
Meanwhile, Texans defensive end J.J. Watt said last week and repeated this week that he stole the Dolphins snap count by watching Hard Knocks. Watt had three batted passes and a sack against Miami.
Running back Daniel Thomas (suspected concussion) is not practicing today. He is, however, working on the side on the field. Lamar Miller is the next guy up, folks, if Thomas doesn't pass his battery of tests this week.
Defensive lineman Tony McDaniel, hurt most of preseason and reinjured at Houston, was neither on the field nor working on the side. As I stated in the last post, the fact the Dolphins added Ryan Baker suggests they are concerned McDaniel will not play Sunday.

Remember that scene in Hall Pass, where the police catches Andy Sedekis jerking off in his car? And the one cop calls the woman cop over, and both are laughing at the size of his johnson?

Too bad, Thomas was coming into his own. Bad luck Dolphins at it again.

McDaniel is a giant statue with a beard...ever since he cut his hair. Done = Too Tall Insurance Salesman.
Note to Sherm: Change Snap Count from one JJ Watt memorized. Wait...Raiders?...leave it the same.

They may have to draft Barkley next year. Move Tannehill to WR.
Posted by: Ron Son | September 12, 2012 at 01:20 PM
Awesome, I think Miller brings a lot more skills to the offense. CYA Daniel Thomas!
Posted by: Eddie | September 12, 2012 at 01:23 PM
When Ireland traded 3 picks for D Thomas the draft room broke out in hysterical laughter.
Posted by: Yes | September 12, 2012 at 01:23 PM
I would bet the farm that the first pass was a 3 step drop. I'm not saying all 3 step drops are a problem for all QBs but obviously Tannehill struggles with it for whatever reason at this point. It's obviously a lot shorter window to process what's in front of you on a 3 step drop and Tannehill is a rookie who is struggling with not looking anyone off. Not a big deal for a rookie to have a few issues. I still blame the coaches more then him.
Note to Sherman/Philbin maybe design a run or playaction to get Tannehill a snap or 2 before designing a quick drop and read to shatter is confidence, eventually.

Note to the Dolphins: Get a real HC.

Posted by: cocoajoe | September 12, 2012 at 01:32 PM
I knew it was bad news when Mando post practice updates. Then the first sentence is JUST THE FACTS.
The "vacant lot" QB had 19 batted balls last year folks.
I don't think it will be corrected. Why? Because its one of the most easily correctable things a QB can fix. And it wasn't fixed in college or training camp.
Posted by: JackSparrow | September 12, 2012 at 01:33 PM
JJ Watt saying he picked up snap counts from Hard Knocks is absurd.
Posted by: JL Raleigh | September 12, 2012 at 01:36 PM
Batted balls and accuracy go HAND IN HAND.
Question for the homers.
If he stops locking in on WR, and just goes by instinct, what the hell do you think is going to happen next?
INT's will start to happen. He locks in to make most of his completions. If he can't lock in, he will start to throw INT after INT after INT.
The kid doesn't have "IT".
Posted by: JackSparrow | September 12, 2012 at 01:36 PM
Parcells, the greatest predictor of QB talent ever, made it clear that a QB should not be drafted in any round unless he has 25 WINS in college. Not 25 starts 25 wins.
Henne: 45 starts 40 wins 4 BCS Bowl Game starts
Pat White: 48 starts 38 wins 4 Bowl Game wins
Matt Moore: Not draft quality and not drafted
Ryan Tannehill: Not draft quality taken in 1st round
This is too easy and too much fun!
Posted by: LincolnContinental | September 12, 2012 at 01:37 PM
I never played with a finesse "vacant lot" QB. Vacant lot QB's aren't concerned with routes and schemes.
Just run to the log and I will throw it to you.
That is Ryan Tannehill in a nutshell.
Posted by: JackSparrow | September 12, 2012 at 01:39 PM
Maybe Sherman should find the nearest "vacant lot" and use the playbook they are using.

Steven Ross is the ideal boss. He's so incompetent himself, that he can't see all the incompetence around him. So, the paychecks keep on comin' and the ship just keeps taking on water.
Mr. Ross, please sell the franchise to someone - anyone - who has a clue. Liberals like you may be obsessed with the cult of celebrity (thus selling minority ownerships to the Estafans, Serena Williams, Jennifer Lopez, et al.) but nobody else gives a doo doo about these people. And how does this improve your product on the field????? If you had a clue - which you do not - you would have fired Jeff Ireland on DAY 1 and focused on rebuilding the team. Instead, you've had your head lodged in your posterior by coddling celebrities instead of fixing all that is obviously broken.
It's really hard to be a Dolfan these days. And it's getting harder when you witness the blind continue to lead the blind into a deep ditch. God help us.

Armando,
Everyone has a different take on the Tannehill tipped passes. Dilfer, Watt etc...Chad Pennington indicated that Tannehill has to alter his passes above the DL by standing tall and lofting the ball over the line on shorter underneath passes. There is a deeper drop on longer passes but the shorter ones have to be altered over the DL. This coaching staff should be able to figure this problem out with better play calling, altering the shorter passes and not telegraphing where the pass is going.
Posted by: promichael | September 12, 2012 at 01:46 PM
Pennington says Tannehill needs to vary throwing motion in 3 step. Tipped Balls = CORRECTABLE
Dilfer says predictable play-calling/coaching is cause = NOT CORRECTABLE by TANNEHILL.
Who to believe?
Trent 'Derp' Dilfer most known for handing ball off in SB, and throwing only when absolutely necessary because he had a 50-50 chance of falling down or a pick 6.
OR,
Chadwick Pennington. Struggled to throw ball 40 yds. Made of glass. Yet, the MOST accurate QB in NFL history. Should have been 2008 MVP and 2 time come back player award.
Posted by: Renvez | September 12, 2012 at 01:51 PM
I figured it out folks. Its simple.
Tannehill does not, I repeat, does not have pre-snap vision. He walk up to the line and just runs the play. He doesn't even look at the matchups on the field.
Furthermore, his post snap vision is about 35.278 to 40.025 degrees left and right of center.
This guy lacks all the tangible qualities that a franchise QB must possess.

Pro-Micheals From Last Post.
Great Post. Penny Explains it best. Dashi was talking about this yesterday. It almost looks like a Jump Hook Motion.
Again if u watch the Tape. All Tipped Passes were to N-Ee!! After the 3rd Qtr Philbin Replaced him with Hartline. (Naanee didn't played the 4th Qtr)
They also changed his drops after the Half. We Made Adjustments. It was just to late.
Hopefully, We start Hartline this Week!! Dashi can't believe I'm saying this. We need Hartline to start.

Posted by: Clue | September 12, 2012 at 01:57 PM
Did no other QB's have batted passes this week? Maybe, but not to the extent that Tanny had issues with it. That was ridiculous!
He also had them in preseason. And all last year in College too. Maybe this isn't correctable if it continues to surface? You would think that after the preseason & the known issue last year, this would have been a point of emphasis with him & it would be corrected.
This sounds like something with the QB more than anything else. God help this team if it is.

I dislike Philbin and Ireland both, I wish we would've kept interim coach tod and kept Brian Daboll as Mike Nolan as well, added more pieces around Moore, and to defense, not dismantle.

YG,
Look like you have 1001 opinions on all things Dolphins today. OK if the rest of us get a chance to chime in.
I'm confused what you are saying about Tannehill. You said this morning 'Tannehill has a ton of a ways to go before he's the QB we expect' (not even sure that's anything remotely close to grammatically correct English but whatever, we get the point) but you think he's going to be a 'very good QB'. Wasn't it just yesterday you were saying we should package this guy for a second roound pick and draft Matt Barkley? So I'm confused. Why are we getting rid of a guy you think is going to be a 'very good QB in this league' for a 2nd round pick and drafting a guy we really don't know if he's going to be any good or not. Shouldn't we wait for the guy 'who's going to be a very good QB' and draft somebodt else. Are you going to blame this on my reading comprehension or is this the classic 'flip-flop'?
Also, where is it written that a team that goes 6-10 shouldn't have an MVP? I guess Adrian Pedersen doesn't deserve to be the MVP of last year's Vikings team, despite the team sucking. The MVP of the team was voting on by the players. Interesting they picked a guy who didn't make the Pro Bowl in Moore over a guy who DID make it in Marshall. I think that says a lot about what the players said about Marshall.

Interesting tidbit from Armando about the tips in the game. 3 of 4 out of the shotgun, not the 3 step drop.
Had nothing to do with it. So dashi know nothing, they didn't change his drops at halftime. Almost all the tips were in the shotgun were he remained in the 2nd half.
This was provided to you as informational to ignore the Dashi know nothing blabbermouth. Along with the other arm chair Qb's here who told you it was about the quick drop. No, it wasn't, it was about the player throwing the ball.

I shudder to think what Miami fans would have said about #1 pick Andrew Luck's 3 INTs. They'd say he belongs in college, is trash, is a bust, should be benched, can't ever play, no skills.
I used to get mad at Craig for saying QBs need 4 years to develop. Now you fools want to give a guy ONE GAME to develop. What the $%&# is that?
Posted by: DC Dolfan | September 12, 2012 at 02:29 PM
As far as TanneHill goes, the tipped passing is and will be solved with time and coaching. Not to concerned there.

DC Dolfan, that's a great post!! Andrew Luck and the Colts won't have a much better record then the Fins this year. And guess what? Both Luck and TanneHill will bith be fine QBs

Jack Sparrow do you realize you're one of the dumbest fans in this blog? It has nothing to do with being a homer. This team stinks and most can see that. The GM needs to go as well. Lots of problems. This post has nothing to do with me sticking up for the team. I'm simply pointing out that the posts you write look like they were written by someone who has no objectivity and really doesn't know much about football beyond what he has learned on PS3'S Madden football. I'm sticking up for the other posters who have to read your ridiculously one sided not thought posts. You're an imbecile and you make Dolphins fans in here look like idiots.
Posted by: Good Lord | September 12, 2012 at 02:31 PM
Agree bobby. It's all about how he looks Week 16 vs. last week. It's the trajectory that's important. If he's improving, all is going as planned.
Also, if he's improving while carrying Legadu Nannee around his neck, then he deserves the MVP for that alone.
Posted by: DC Dolfan | September 12, 2012 at 02:31 PM
DC,
Interesting that we haven't hurt from anybody from the Pro-Weeden camp come out and say 'What an idiot Ireland was not to draft him'. GUARANTEED it would have happened if he'd had a good game. After Sunday?....CRICKETS.

bobby12,
Guys don't want to hear that. They want to say there's something wrong with Tannehill and they want to blame Ireland for the pick. Don't you see it's not about reality but rather perception. All things are Ireland are WRONG and all things NOT Ireland are the BEST.

Craig M, of course. Not many of people who are actually involved in football or played are saying negative things about TanneHill. More with the play calling and coaching

Case Closed. You see. You hate your team so much that even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary you still believe Parcells did nothing while with this team. Parcells himself admitted to being in charge of two of the drafts and you still ignore the facts. It doesn't fit in with your lets crush everything and anything the Dolphins do agenda so you pretend it never happened.
Your posts can not be taken seriously because you yourself do not take them seriously. So basically you are wasting your time by writing in here because people just shake their heads and laugh as they pass over your posts. If that's what you're going for then great, keep up the wonderful work, everyone is ignoring you. But if your trying to get people to listen and maybe change a few peoples minds you're going about it the wrong way. A little objectivity would show people that you do actually have a brain and can use it once and a while.

Posted by: Craig M | September 12, 2012 at 02:42 PM
Whoa Craig, I was in the Pro-Weeden camp, careful, lol!
Seriously though, I'm staying true to my promise. I'm not faulting Ireland one bit about Tannehill (just everything else, lol). I like the kid, sorry. I think he's talented, and will someday prove Ireland right.
Weeden would have had problems here, Luck, even RG3. You can't throw to the air. If Bess is the only guy that can get open consistently, then what can we expect? Our best WRs last game were RBs. Fine, that's what we gotta do this year. (Well, that first long pass to Hartline, he was open, a step behind the defender, pass was just too long).
I'm interested in how we look in Nov/Dec. The team will have gel'd some by then, more experience for Tannehill. We know what we need, but we need to know if our core is still strong (Tannehill, Bush, Long, Pouncey, Incognito, Bess, Soliai, Odrick, Starks, Dansby, maybe Misi and Burnett, Jones, Smith, Lane). If these guys are all players (like some of us think they are) then Philbin should be able to work with that (adding the other essential pieces).
