Dolphins beat Rams go to bye week happy

The Dolphins are 3-3 and going into their bye week with a two-game win streak.

Well done by Miami winning a 17-14 decision.

This team got a great effort from quarterback Ryan Tannehill today. The rookie quarterback completed 21 of 29 passes for 185 yards and two touchdown passes. His quarterback rating was a season high 112.

It wasn't easy.

The Rams tried a 66 yard field goal to tie the game as time ran out. Rookie Greg Zuerlein, who had not missed in 15 tries this season, missed the long attempt. He also missed two other FG tries for a total of three on the day.

"It was kind of a grind it out game," coach Joe Philbin said. "You have to hand it to our guys that they made a play when they had to. They took care of the football. We had some big plays. It was a good, hard football game."

Craig,
about Vernon.
you have to wait and see as you were suggesting. Even after a good first year you have to prove your self through a possible sophomore slump. 2 sacks today and if a recall some impact on special teams. Its such a week to week league with so many factors. But he looked quite hopeful today and that is sweet.

Nice to win a game where Fins were probably a little outplayed, but we were owed a good break.....especially since the refs hate us.

Secondary was weak (Sean Smith was awful) but made a couple key plays.

Philbin's best coached game by far.

Please everyone, stop whining about the officials.

Go Miami!!

Posted by: jpao | October 14, 2012 at 04:42 PM

JP, I think you misunderstand!

We're NOT whinning. We're pointing out the FACT that we beat Fisher, The Rams and The Officials Too! We won despite the atrocious officiating and thats what good teams do.

Good Teams overcome bad officiating!

Go Miami Indeed!!!!

Its not just today last game too Philbin was over ruled three times last game , and he couldn t believe it , I`d rather they brought back the replacement officials , they didn t know the standard rule of thumb is to screw the Dolphins every chance you get like these guys are doing, its because we had Shula on thr rules commitee, but that debt has long been payed ......enough already!!!!

...and BTW the cheerleaders are looking FANtastic !!!!

DC not taking nothing away from tannehill. but he's not winning these games by his self. he's playing mistake free ball which is equal to a game manager role. like i said if you watch, most of his throws are off and just a good catch mostly by hartline and bess and he also needs to scan the field a little better and be more aware of pass rushes. he has gotten better since week 1 but the title you are trying to give him is more of a tom brady take over the game type title and thats not him yet.he does show promise tho

Whahh, Whahh, the officials screwed us. Whahh, Whahh, they almost cost us the game.

Get a tissue....we won!!

BPA you sure it wasn't 3rd down?

Things to check off the Checklist for Next Offseason

QB
O-Line
Dline, Specifically DE- Vernon can be Wake Jr!!!!

We still need 1 CB, 1 WR, 1 FS!!!! and 2 new LB's!!

Let these coach develop the Talent! SCREW FREE AGENCY!!!

THE FINS WILL BUILD THRU THE DRAFT!!!

....if you can't complain about the officiating today, when the heck can you...

...they were consistently wrong !!!!

...and it's true...good teams overcome ...

GO FINS!!!! YEAHHHHH!!!

Dan Carpenter is the reason why the fish are not 5-1 and the defense is why they are not 1-5! While Tanny has been solid, the offense has been MIA in the second half of games. At some point the defense will give and the offense needs to give them a cushion.

Tannehill by far is offensive player of the game for us. After going down 6-0, and being completely stymied by an oustanding Rams defense, T-hill showed up big time to cash in for a 17-0 spurt.

Armando dismissed the Marlon Moore td pass to blown coverage and nothing to rave about. But in post-Marino Miami football, we've learned an accurate td throw to a wr, blown coverage or not, hasnt been close to a gimme.

Dashi ...good list of needs...maybe we could add one more.....impact TE ?

Perfect time for the bye week. I have to think Bush can really use the down time. He's got a lot of guts and deserves credit for playing but he's not the same. Hopefully Marshall and Gafney will be good to go after some more rest and an off week as well.

About Chris clemons. Yes on pass coverage he stinks it up pretty good. But he has had some good sure tackles in the last two games at least. Wasnt Y Bell and most great strong safeties the same? tackle and stop the run but cant cover the pass. Or the other way around cover the pass and dont tackle so well. And then there is one Ed reed. Hard to find both. But first point of contact tackling is so easy to overlook but its so important. We havent allowed many pass tds the last two weeks But anybody can see we still need to improve a lot on pass coverage.

Buster,

Exactly why last week I posted we need to be a team that's able to control our own fate. We can never depend on officiating to help us win games.

With two straight games of clutch defensive plays to seal a victory, its seems slowly we're becoming that kind of team.

When you cant make plays to control your own fate. You can 100% blame officiating for losses. Though at times they contribute to it. When officiating seals your fate, it also means your team didnt make enough plays.

Got to exit peeps.....lots of insightful comments.....good fun talkin with y'all...have a happy Monday....c-ya

GO FINS!!!!!!!! Super Bowl in 2014 !!!!

Agreed YG......laters ...

What was it that Philbin said a Couple Weeks Ago?

Whoever Wins the Turnover battle wins the Game!!

T-Sizzle is holding on to the ball! The Rb's and Wr's!! Are Holding on to the Ball!!

And this Defense is Attacking the Ball!!! Striping like only a Miami Team Can!!

OV is the Truth! He fits the Cam Wake Mold! Ireland might have something there!

Confidence in Ireland has gone up to 70/30!!

The Fool might Actually have saved his Job!! We have a Solid young Team! With Probably the Most Potential in the Whole Division for the Future!!

If Vernon's now stepping up to become the perfect compliment to Wake. Our defensive will rapidly become "lights out".

good win for the fins man everybody have a good sunday cause its gone be awhile b-4 we see our team play again go seattle and arizona

TAO,

I agree with you on Vernon. We have to see more. My gut feeling is you can never have enough passrushers and injuries happen. I'd still draft passrush high in the draft, unless we're convinced Vernon is the real deal. I think think Clemmons needs to go. I think that will be better options either in the draft or FA. He's nothing special in any one area. I don't see him as starter material.

As far as Tannehill is concerned, I think the guy we are asking him to be right now is Joe Flacco. Bit of a game manager, don't make mistakes and take a shot at the right time. Could he become more Matt Ryan-type? Maybe. He's going to need a lot more help on offence for that to happen.

Under Philbin, seems players are actually developing. Thx Sparano for revealing the truth. It now seems you were a much bigger problem than Ireland.

He gave you the players you asked and you dropped the pizza at the front door.

Biggest single weakness on this team is DB's. Marshall was a poor pick by Ireland. Smith is inconsistent, Carroll is a Nickel CB at best. Wilson is not a starting CB and should likely be a Safety. Clemons is covering WR's well and takes bad angles often. Reshad Jones is the only semi-solid player back there. This is the unit that needs to be revamped in the offseason.

Next area of concern is WR. I love Bess. Hartline has been inconsistent week to week. Happy to see a TD for Moore but it was a gimmee. We just need a major difference maker as our #1 WR.

TE is an area of weakness and I'd like to see it better. Fasano makes enough plays to keep the chains moving but is not a threat. Clay is not doing much. But in the end the TE position is not at the top of my list of issues.

Speaking of draft picks. I do want to see some more of Lamar Miller. I don't get it...the coaches say it's his blocking. Bush said he's a great blocker. The guy had no carries today. Not sure why.

IMA remember....

True enough, but I can name 5 teams that haven't sniffed the playoffs for years who haven't had an empty seat.
Miamians will TELL you it's peculiar to Miami...and to Atlanta in some respects.

Sorry...meant to say Clemons ISN'T covering WR's well

CraigM,

Before considering drafting pass rush high next season. I'll rather stand pat and see how things play out this season.

1st it was Starks and Wake, now the last couple games Vernon's beginning to join the party.

YG,

I think it's a bit early for that (Wake's shadow). I hope you're right but I'd need to see a lot more before I believe that. Great that the kid had a great day today but let's see what the kid does against the Jets and their OL.

Again, I hope you're right but I just think it's too early.

Good win, sort of. In the list of "need to draft" be sure we include a Jacksonian type of running back. Reggie has more guts than power and he just can't get trough the line often time. Unfortunately that's when we need to run the ball. I didn't see much of Miller, is he hurt? Any way, It feels great to see that we may very well have found our QB. The young fellow is smart, talented and has a great arm.

GREAT GAME FOR THE DOLPHINS, SINCE THE BEGUINING OF THE SEASON I SAID THIS IS A GOOD TEAM, SAYING THAT RT STILL NEED HELP HE IS THE REAL DEAL QB, DEFENSE IS IN THE TOP EVEN THOU THEY GAVE TOO MANY RUSHING YARD TO THE BEAST OF RUNNING BACK OF ST. LOUIS THEY WERE OKIDOKI ON MY BOOK, NO THANKS TO THE REAL REF.(TOO MANY CLOSE CALL-WHAT" UP NFL" CLAD THE D STAY FOCUS..

TANNEHILL YOU ARE THE MAN..............

Of course THILL is being asked to be a Game Manager...he doesn't have any real playmakers at WR or TE. He has to dink and dunk with slants, screens and short outs. His receivers will rarely break open. But when they do he hits them (Hartline last week and Moore this week).

He is doing all he can with the weapons he has. He had a 112 QB rating and had two TD's. He ran well. He threw well on the run. He picks up defensive scheme's well.

The offense didn't put up big numbers today because their progress was limited on several drives due to the OLINE didn't create any holes, there was effectively no back up for Bush to spell him, there were several penalties on the OLINE and he was sacked a few times.

His play is improving each week. He had limited experience in college. He won the starting job and is getting it done.

Give it a break. THILL Is what we, as fans, should be most excited about.

jpao,

Marshall wasnt a bad addition by Ireland. Remember, Marshall was brought in to play nickel, the move was made far before Vontae Davis showed up for camp a 2nd season in row out of shape.

No way Ireland could have predicted that before camp started.

YG,

Definitely. I agree. 6 games in the book and 10 to go. That's the beauty of it. We'll have lots of time to assess our needs.

Listen, I hope you're right. I hope Vernon is the answer. Would mean we don't have to spend another pick on pass rush in the draft and can go elsewhere.

Agreed Buster Impact TE is important. But U don't waste 2nd round or 1st round picks on them unless Ur REAL IMPACT POSITIONS ARE COVERED! On Offense- QB,RB,LT,C,WR. On D- MLB,DE/OLB,CB,FS,SS(Ranked in order of importance). After U cover these Positions on ur Team. U can have the Luxury of wasting picks on TE's.

Don't get me wrong, Dashi won't condemn not picking a Real Good TE with a Second or 3rd round pick! Just the Fins have bigger needs!

Specially Getting Young and Faster at LB! Maybe keep Dansby as a OLB! Draft the Kid Te'o with the first round Pick! Misi, Te'o, and Dansby!

I think it is important for everyone here to note that I, for one, never lost faith in this club.

Kudos to Coach Philbin & his staff, to Ryan Tannehill & to all who, like I, have contributed to the team's burgeoning confidence & success.

Solai mad one of the coolest pass rush moves of the day. The karate kick was a bit much though. LOL.
Truly, the Rams played a substandard game, with the usual amount of penalties from a Fisher coached team.
Other than the Icognito AND Trusnick penalties, we didn't allow the Rams to lure us into retaliation.

Last Fisher post, promise. LOL

CraigM,

Im with you there. Consistency is the key. Vernon's put together 2 straight good games. Thats a good start. That's why before automatically saying right now we need to draft pass rush high. Let's see how Vernon does over the next 4-6 games at least.

Marlon Moore ws pretty good tday. # catches, 15.3 yds avg, and a clutch td.

Nice win,we ok,maybe getting good??????Dare I say????

Marlon Moore is but one of many examples of how much better this coaching staff is than the last fist-pumping regime.

Philbin & staff are getting the most from the players.

buster, c'mon man be a fan. We were 0-5 last year at this time on our way to 0-7.

2nd straight great team win in a row. Gotta luv it!

Doesnt it bother anyone that we keep beating (barely) the lower rung NFL teams. A win is a win, but further down the schedule worrys me. Dolphins keep making mistake after mistake. Those things must be fixed. Rams fieldgoal kicker looks as bad as Carpenter. Dolphins very lucky,,,

Yesterday,

You are correct. Marshall was brought in to be a Nickel CB. I shouldn't take a swing at Ireland for that. Good catch.

I guess it could be said that Philbin and Ireland were not really prepared to let Davis go. I think they thought Marshall would rise to the occasion and they were wrong. If the fins can hold on, generated a decent year and then use the pick for someone meaningful they will be redeemed.

That said, Marshall is not a starting CB in this league and I don't think Carroll is either. Smith is the only NFL starting CB on this squad and he is up and down each series.

I have to say, that the new DC is doing a great job trying to hide his weaknesses (Safety, CB and LB coverage). He is getting a really solid pass rush from the front 4 and with blitzes. He is getting solid play from Vernon and other back ups when called upon.

DragonFly:

No, it does not.

Next Question?

WHAT A SWEEEEEEEEET VICTORY......

GREAT FOR....

PHILBIN
ROSS
IRELAND
FINS
FIN FANS.....

Way to send that arrogant .500 coach packing....

TWICE...

Yesterday
were you at Houligans today?

jpao,

Im glad Vontae Davis is gone. 2 straight seasons coming to camp out of shape, last season coming to practice drunk.

Though I hate to see the Jets beat anybody, today they help increase the level of player we'll get for the 2nd rd Vontae do over. I feel Indy screwed themselves giving up what will probably be a very high 2nd for a out of shape stumblin drunken bum(Davis).

Give credit where credit is due. These are the types of games we usually lose but today we came out ahead despite being outclassed in stats. We outplayed Arizona and lost, we outplayed the Jets and lost so it's good to have this one. Olivier Vernon deserves the game ball as his two sacks took away 6 points for the Rams. Tannehill again proved to be Ireland's best draft pick so far, I just wish they would roll him out more as he is very accurate when he does. Kudos to defensive line for keeping up the pressure the whole game. The bye week should be very beneficial as we might be able to insert Gaffney into the mold.

I am just amazed, a month and a 1/2 ago most of you were fire Philbin, fire Sherman he's a loser, Tanny is a bust, Hartline is a bust cut him, Cut Fasano, Martin is a bust, Jerry is a bust, Odrick is a bust cut him, cut Dansby, cut Burnett, cut Clemons and Jones, and that we are the worst team in the NFL. Oh and suck for Barkley (see how he's doing this year). You guys remember that. Dolphin fans amaze me.

Craig absolutely right about Thomas, there is a need for a back like him. Oh THomas is still a bust according to many of the Phins GM's.

xtremeway,

No I wasnt at Houligans. I watch thed the game on computer. Usually I go watch the games at McCharacter's. I actually hungout at McCharacter's lastnight.

There is one hot Houligan's girl that sometimes comes to McCharacter's after work. I forget her name but she wears the Dolce Gabbana eyeglasses.

Let's not get too carried away.
These are some of the stats from today's win.

Dolphins offense: 192 yards
Brandon Fields' punts: 323 yards
Rams offense: 462 yards

Rushes: 18
Yards: 19
Rams rushing yards: 162

Possessions: 11
First downs: 12
Rams first downs: 22 (9 possessions)

Time of Possession
Dolphins: 26:37
Rams: 33:23

Resilient: Yes
Winning formula: No

Mike:

Nothing you post will dissuade me from feeling a great deal of satisfaction & happiness as a result of today's victory.

Mike,

Philbin's showing Sparano was the problem, not Ireland. Players that didnt quite develop under Sparano are now "miraculously" developing under Philbin.

If things keep developing like they are, I'll be more than proud to say Ross made the right call to keep Ireland, and dump Sparano. So far the proof's in the pudding.

OKAY IT'S THE BYE WEEK AND IF YOU'VE BEEN WATCHING THIS TEAM THESE FIRST 6 GAMES IT IS NO DOUBT THEY CLEARLY SHOULD BE 5-1! TANNEHILL IS DEVELOPING INTO A VERY GOOD QB RIGHT BEFORE OUR EYES! TAKE THAT YOU SO CALLED EXPERTS, IMAGINE IF WE HAD ANOTHER GOOD WIDE RECEIVER! NOW AFTER THE BYE WEEK WE MUST KICK THE JETS A..S! BEAT THE COLTS AND COME HOME BEAT THE TITANS! IN ORDER TO DO SO WE MUST REGAIN THE RUNNING GAME, IMPROVE THE SECONDARY WITH MARSHALL COMING BACK AND KEEP BRINGING THE PRESSURE! WE PULL THIS OFF AND THIS TEAM WILL BE IN THE PLAYOFFS! THAT'S RIGHT I SAID IT PLAYOFFS! WE ARE THE SECOND BEST TEAM IN OUR DIVISON BUT WE MUST BEAT THE PATRIOTS AT LEAST ONCE,BILLS TWICE AND THE HATED JETS! GREAT WIN DOLPHINS BUT THERE IS A LOT OF FOOTBALL LEFT TO PLAY!

extremeway,

I can actually walk to Houligan's. Im in the B-section right off of Boulder Rock. LOL

Buster
This time last year we were 0-6, we started the year 0-7 before turning it around a little too late. Happy with 3 and 3 start, but can't help but think that we should be 5-1 or at least 4-2. The schedule doesn't seem to bad until December, so we can pick up some more wins in the next few weeks before then. Call me crazy, but I think all the remaining games are winnable with the exception of New England, as I don't think we can keep up with the. I think we are physical enough to hand with the Niners.
