Dolphins sign Jabar Gaffney, cut Naanee and Fluellen

Many of you are getting your wish.

The Miami Dolphins signed wide receiver Jabar Gaffney and terminated the contracts of defensive lineman Andre Fluellen and wide receiver Legedu Naanee and waived/injured linebacker Mike Rivera, it was announced today.

This signals the end of Naanee's short and uninspiring time with the Dolphins. He was told of the move this morning. Rivera and Fluellen only had a cup of coffee with the Dolphins.

The addition of Gaffney seemed at times inevitable for the Dolphins once the Patriots cut him and didn't offer him a chance to return. Gaffney was cut by New England in the preseason while he was nursing a leg injury.

He is apparently healthy now.

Once Gaffney learns the offense, he can give the Dolphins three solid wide receivers to put on the field at the same time. The Dolphins have been looking for that with no luck -- as Naanee failed and Anthony Armstrong got his opportunity and lately has been demoted mostly to special teams work.

The 6-2, 200 pound wide receiver is in his 11th season. Gaffney was originally a second-round pick (33rd overall) in the 2002 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans where he spent his first four seasons with the team. Gaffney has also played with the New England Patriots (2006-08) and Denver Broncos (2009-10).  He joins Miami after spending last season with the Washington Redskins where he established career highs in both receptions (68) and receiving yards (947). Gaffney also tied a career high with five touchdowns. He has played in 155 career games with 103 starts and has caught 443 passes for 5,622 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Gaffney played two seasons at the University of Florida, where he totaled 138 career receptions for 2,375 yards (17.2 avg.) with 27 touchdowns. He received consensus first-team All-America honors and was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award (nation’s best receiver) as a redshirt sophomore in 2001 after ranking second in the nation in receiving yards per game (108.3 / 67-1,191, 13 TDs). Gaffney also set an NCAA Division I-A freshman record for receiving yards (1,184 on 71 receptions) and receiving touchdowns (14) as a redshirt freshman in 2000 while earning consensus National Freshman of the Year accolades and first-team All-Southeastern Conference honors. Born December 1, 1980, Gaffney was a two-year starter at Raines County High School in Jacksonville, Florida.

Sammo,
How Wake didn't get efensive player of the week for his 4.5 sacks either, I'll never know.

Posted by: Craig M | October 02, 2012 at 11:08 PM

What?

He didn't?

Who did?

Are you sure?

Yg agreed #9 and trending up!

Odin agreed. Those 3 things go right this weekend and we are sitting pretty!

Wake is getting his groove back and Shelby and OV keep getting better. Also, nice to see Misi at DE.

Dashi has stated this is the reason we are so tuff to run against. We start 3 DT's and 2 DE's. Soliai, starks, and Odrick are DT's, and Misi and Wake are DE's!

Who is going to run on that. Then u add 2 3-4 LB's. Nobody in the fins front 7 weighs less than 250 and u have 3-300lb guys starting!

Who will run on the fins this year!

CraigM,

I take back everything I ever said good about Sparano. I didnt fully understand how awful Sparano was until Philbin arrived.

Yeah YG, ditto at 11:13!

Tannehill gets the Offensive Rookie Of The Week award.

Yet his Beautiful 80 yard TD pass doesn't even make 10th on ESPN?

Berman and Jackson can have a night with Monkey Bu-oy on me! I'll even pay the 2o bucks!

YG,

I stuck up for him for the longest time too. I was guilty of a guy who just didn't have it as a head coach. So much more impressed with Philbin and I was uncertain about that hiring at the time. I wanted Fisher in the worst way. Very pleased with our coach so far.

Jabar Gaffeny is going to fit into this offence perfectly, assuming he's healthy and is smart enough to be a quick learner. He's going to make a huge difference taking the pressure off of Bess and Hartline. We're still missing that true number one but at least Tannehill has options with these guys. Really happy about the add.

Odin,

I wouldnt wanna be Cincy's dc this week. The Cards loaded up against our run to force Tannehill to beat them. We were a couple boneheaded plays on both offense and defense from Tannehill doing just that.

Tannehill showed if dc's gang up on the run he's capable of hurting them in the pass game. If this continues, dc's will have to play us straight up, all accross the board. Or it'll be pick your poison and we'll still kill you.

Its been a very long time since we had a Dolphin offense capable of hurting a team both passing and running the ball.

YG,

Again a good point. I still expect the Bengals to beat us this week but I think we've got a chance, especially if Bush is healthy and Gaffney can contribute.

Agreed, spo sucks.

And each day it looks like Ireland wasn't the problem spo was!

The jets have to be crazy if they let Spo shop for that offense. The man doesn't understand the current game!

And also, ESPN hates miami on all sports!

We get no love! But it's okay! Because if they hated Marino, they are going to jump off a bridge once the T-Sizzle experience starts.

Odin, agreed that's the last step we are all waiting on when sherm unleashes the kid and he doesn't have to look up field all the time.

U got to love how T-Hill accelerates pass DE's while he is still jogging and looking to pass. U just know he has a couple extra gears.

Notice how he always throws it away at the last second! U can tell daddy has been talking to him. Master the pocket till then no scrambling!

Can't wait till Sherman turns the page that let's T-Hill run at will!

CraigM,

When first hiring Philbin, I thought we were getting old stale leftovers, better served tossing into the garbage. He just may turn out to be better than getting Fisher, Gruden, or Cowher. May even as good a hire as Harbaugh for the Niners is seeming to be.

Also, Gaffney had 68 catches for 987yds last year. There are #1 wr's in this league that didnt have those numbers. We got a steal of the year being able to put him in as the 3rd wr.

I have NEVER EVER seen so many Giddy A ssed Happy Miami Dolphins Fans after a 1-3 start!

WTF?

We all can't be wrong! Something Good is Happening!

YG, would you rather be cincinnati's dc, their parole officer, or odin's mother?

Even the Trolls can feel it.

They all crawled back in their holes-lol!

I spoke to soon!

Some never learn!

Craig wake got robbed. He was playing like a madman out there. That 80 yarder had me screamin run white boy run! Ive never seen a white guy outrun a d like that. Well maybe steve young. But still. That pick in front of hartline was a result of feet getting tangled up and the db winning the balance battle. That fumble by not here no more shoulda been incomplete. He never made a move and from the back angle his arms never stop moving and he is bobbling the ball the whole time.

Any games we win(including Cincy) during the first half of the season is just pure gravy.

The 2nd half of the season(final 8gms) is when I believe this team comes together and become one of the nfl's 10 best. We're going to be the team nobody wants to play during the 2nd half of the season.

If by miracle, we make it as a wildcard playoff team, nothing that happened would shock me. Not even a sb appearance. I know it sounds crazy but thats how I feel.

Odin,

At 1-3, as dolfans, we're usually ready to leap from tall buildings. And no one wears a cape.

Maybe Hartline was a #1 wr after all, just that Tony Sparano couldnt figure it out. Now that Sparano is the Jets oc, thier offense looks just as awful as the one Sparano had here.

Maybe the jets use thier 1st pick next year on a fg kicker.

Do you believe in the evil voodoo curse? LEGEDU NANNEE IS GONE THE EVIL SPIRIT IS GONE....... DOLPHINS BEGIN A 5 GAME WIN STREAK.

Hey guys!! Was watching the 30/30 ESPN special "BROKE" about how some NFL players spend their Money and 78% are in Bankruptcy 2 Yrs. after retirement, good episode. In reading everybody's posts were I left off I happen to agree with YG about wanting to see a 2 TD performance as the next step but believe it more a problem of personnel.

It seems every time we hit the redzone teams load up in the box with a short field and go man on our group and we can't seem to get any separation or crisp route running of any kind leading to alot of passes thrown away or runs that get stuffed. I am at the point were I cringe at a 1st and goal outside the 5 Yrd. line!!

For those waiting on that play we use to run with Bess crossing underneath and everybody else running a corner post better think again with either a Safety or LB in a shallow zone waiting on the play which was Devon's bread and butter from 08-2010. Here is were we need a more athletic T.E. or BIG W.R. We had that player in Marshall but as we all know the drops aside Henne couldn't throw a fade if his life depended on it and the redzone O needs work but above all else personnel that would move the Safety and LB's which we don't have yet.I am hopeful we design something that works in order to see some evolution out of the redzone group before Seasons end!

By the way funniest thing about the ESPN 30/30 I just saw was Bart Scott who took his Ravens signing bonus and tried to cash it at a Check Cashing USA were the tellers laughed at him or Baseball's Ricky Henderson having to be told by the Oak. A's accounting dept. that he needed to cash the 1 Mil check he framed at home because well it was real money!!

LEGEDU NANEE VOODOO CURSE LIFTED

DOLPHINS WILL WIN THE NEXT 5 games in a row..... I GUARANTEE IT!

I'll stick with my original prediction 3-13

Hey Fin4life.....so you catch alot of SD games. Well when I was stationed in SD back in the day the Chargers made a significant move about this time of the year when they were just getting solid with Drew Brees.

They traded, or picked him up as a waiver claim, for WR Keenan McCardell, and his veteran influence was exactly what Breesy and the WR core needed. The WR's had a savy veteran to learn nuances of the game from and another talented receiver for Breesy to throw too.

It seems to me this acquisition, while different since its a FA pick-up, is very similar. We have young WR core with a younger up and coming QB who definitely needs that veteran 3rd WR.

Obviously we need more talent, but from an in-season standpoint the two situations seem eerily similar. From that point when the Chargers picked up McCardell the Chargers became a team to be reckoned with from the bottom dwelling they had been the previous 5 or 6 years.

Do you remember that and what do you think?

Who is this Home blogger? We noticed Home is four for four on picking the team winner on our games. We hope Home is picking us to win this week as I have this team ready for victory.

Some of you got what you wanted from the team when they released Naanee. We will find out what Gaffney can do here.It looks that the team had good contract terms with Naanee, so they were able to just terminate his contract.I would think Gaffney will get a similar arrangement because he dosent have bargining power.I still think if Moore is healthey he will be activated this week I dont know about Gaffney.

let's hope the signing of Gaffney gives Tannehill the green light to stop being so predictable and spread the ball around

just sayin

What was the deal with Fluellen? He supposedly was talented but a victim of a numbers game in Detroit. So why did he only last a week?

Everyones got a say, no one knows it all, and there are no idiots in this blog, there are some severly over zealous typers. Get real, this is supposed to be fun.
Well, Jeffery, its about time with a quarter of the season gone. Didnt you folks know Nocatch Naanee couldnt, u know, catch the ball!!! Eeegads.
Wheres 7-11, open 24-7??? I know he was released, was he signed to the bommer squad?

"[Gaffney] joins Miami after spending last season with the Washington Redskins where he established career highs in both receptions (68) and receiving yards (947). Gaffney also tied a career high with five touchdowns."

And he did that on a 5-11 team that had Rex Grossman and John Beck at qb. Great addition.

Love the signing of Jabar Gaffney, hopefully we see the benefits of it come to fruition this Sunday in Cincy
http://phinsnews.com/gaffney-signed-sealed-and-delivered/

I came to this blog to read about the Dolphins but people like Dashi, should be set free of the complete centralization that is rapidly destroying competition in this country. This would make each man a mere number.

Smart move the kid needs a vet wr.

may not have been the right thing to do at this point in time but after the last few years....I like it.
