Babin doesn't make sense in Miami but don't discount the notion

[UPDATE: The Dolphins were reportedly one of eight teams to put in a waiver claim for Jason Babin. This obviously speaks to the idea discussed below that the team wants pass-rush help opposite Cameron Wake. Babin goes to Jacksonville and will face the Dolphins Dec. 16]

[UPDATE 2: Now we learn that reports saying the Dolphins put in a claim are not accurate. Apparently only three teams put in claims -- Washington, Jacksonville and Bills. Babin goes to the Jaguars. Still.]

Jason Babin?

He's available and he had 18 sacks in 2011. He is a 4-3 defensive end and the Dolphins play the 4.3. He fits an immediate need for a team needing pass rush help on the other side of Cameron Wake.

But ...

Babin wants to go to a winner and according to some reports he became something of a problem in the Philadelphia locker room because the team wasn't winning. Well, the Dolphins are 5-6 and not considered a team that's winning.

Is acquiring Babin Joe Philbin's style. No, in fact, it would go against his stated approach of having a certain kind of player that advances and fits into the program. Babin reportedly complained and second-guessed and, wait for it, had opinions during his time in Philadelphia.

Philbin doesn't want that in his locker room.

Babin's 32 years old. So what? The Dolphins are going to do exactly the opposite of what they've been doing -- that is, letting younger players such as Jared Odrick and Olivier Vernon show themselves and develop? Hard to fathom an about-face on this.

Babin is also something of an engima. He has only 5.5 sacks this year. He's had more games without a sack than games in which he got a sack. If you notice the Eagles' record the past two years, obviously Babin is not a difference maker. They stunk with him playing well, they stink with him playing poorly.Believe it or not, the Eagles have lost each of the last four games in which Babin has recorded a sack.

I'm not saying it is his fault they lost the game. I'm just saying his limited contribution hasn't made a difference.

Babin is also subject to waivers. There is one report that the Ravens will definitely claim him. The Ravens, by the way, are behind the Dolphins in the priority waivers claim order. So if the report is correct the Dolphins would have to claim Babin to get him. They would not be able to sign him as a free agent after waivers expire.

Claiming Babin means taking on his contract which has $1.75 million left on it in salary this year and extends through 2015 with salaries of $4.25 million next year and $6 million in '14 and '15.

You'll hear the term "Wide 9" scheme as it relates to what Babin is best suited for. Forget that. If a guy can rush the QB, he can rush the QB. Plus the Dolphins employ a bit of that anyway. Not a factor here.

Did I mention Babin is limited against the run? He's not that good against the run. There, I said it.

Yes, the Dolphins need a counter to Cameron Wake. Yes, Babin is probably a better pass rusher than anyone else currently on the roster.

But from waiver claim issues to locker room issues to age, there are serious reasons to doubt Babin fits. It doesn't make sense. (So, of course, don't be surprised if the Dolphins are interested).

Man Dashi,
Never seen someone so hyped up on these middle linebackers. I really hope they draft one you like.

Dashi,

Should we not pick in the top 10, trading both our 2nd rd picks to move up and grab T'eo, borders along insanity. Youre talking 3 top picks for one guy. That's two 2nd's and a 1st rd pick.

Our primary problem with doing that is we're still to short on overall talent to make such a brash move. No matter how great T'eo could become.

There's also risk of serious injury. Remember John Offerdahl? Great, great mlb, but, his Dolphin career was cut short by serious injury and lasted only 5yrs. I love T'eo, but that's too much to invest considering how thin we are in other critical skilled areas.

What ever Ireland decides to do will be the wrong choice ...

Mark, how competent is the Canadian school system if you think a 5 year can write 2 paragraphs. WOW maybe we should look into selling Canada to reduce our deficit. Except I doubt it be worth more than some chump change

There've been too many great players who weren't 1st-round draft picks for us to even think about losing games to improve our draft.

And at this point, we have too much competition - some teams are much better at losing games than we are!

Still beed a QB.

You are Worst Than a 5 year old. Your Need for Attention is Amazing. Very Close to Obsessive. Give it a Break Sweet Cheeks.

The Facts Are The Facts!

and Bill, how do you fill the void at left tacckle if you let jake walk?

Posted by: Mark in Toronto | November 28, 2012 at 12:07 PM

You move Martin, a more natural LT(protected Lucks blind side in College) to LT & create a void at RT which is easier to solve.

As said yesterday, it's MUCH easier to find a RT than a LT. Unless your GM is Jeff Ireland.

??? Truth, your post shows your stupidity. If I thought a 5 year old could write 2 paragraphs, wouldn't that mean that the Canadian school system (as if there is such a thing since all school systems are run at a district level) would be a good one to produce these prodigies?

You're an idiot, fukkk off

Johnathan martin on an island as left tackle at this point, WOW.... LOL for real ...

Nobody loses on purpose, some teams just make it look that easy.

Dashi,

Say T'eo goes top 10, we may still have a shot at Georgia's outstanding olb Jarvis Jones. But Walter Camp has Jones going top 5 as a 3-4 olb.

Still, if Jones were available outside of top 10 you have to grab him. If Jones indeed goes top 5-10 and T'eo slips to us just outside of top 10. You have to take him there.

I wouldnt trade away any of our top 5 picks. We need to much help on both sides of the ball still. Even if its just better depth with the two 3rd rd picks.

Coach,

Anyone! IS Better than these LB's! Specially Dansby!

Average is Ok! If we are Only Paying the Guy $500k!

NOT $16 MILLION!!

ANY ROOKIE WILL DO! If WE Keep all 3 Picks! Dashi has SAID ALL ALONG!! THE FIRST 3 PICKS SHOULD GO TO MLB, WR, CB!! BPA AT THE TIME OF PICKING!!

BUT

Te'o Is that Special!! TO DO SOMETHING CRAZY! I'm Not Saying Trade Away!! Our Future!! Just the Current Picks!

Hear Me Out. What About if we Already Answered The Questions at WR and CB!! Before the Draft! With Wallace and a Top Line FA CB!!

We Will have Room To Trade Away A Couple Picks!! TO GET THE BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY!!

MIGHT BE THE BEST PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY!! PERIOD!!

THE GUY IS THAT GOOD!

If you've watched A game this year and think Martin would be better than Long you are insane.

I thought this post was about Babin. How do we end up talking about everything EXCEPT Babin?.....Long, Teo, Ireland, Truth's lack of basic understanding?...well that last one good by a couple of weeks worth of blogs, but never mind.

I'm all in for Babin. I thought he was great in Rainman....

Sp people will continue to stay Long stinks and yet he continues to lead the LT voting for the Pro Bowl. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Go ahead and keep beating the drum that it's a popularity contest and he's getting there on reputation. Still doesn't explain how a guy that stinks will have made it 5 years out of 5. Not saying he's having a great year but he FAR from stinks!

Anyone that says he stinks, knows very little about football (looking at you Truth)

Posted by: Craig M | November 28, 2012 at 01:00 PM

The probowl? The popularity contest? LMAO

Yea, that's a good barometer for how good a player still is. LOLOLOL

Probowl voting which is mostly done by dumb fans, vote based on a name, not ability. Long is going to make the probowl based on name recognition, NOT his present ability.

The probowl has always been & always will be a popularity contest conducted by dumb NFL fans. One that you put alot of stock into apparently.

What you numbnutters Mark in dumpy canada & Common No Sense FAIL to grasp is that Martin would be about as good as Long has been this year. Except Martin has upside where as Long does not.

Long has given up 6 sacks. What does it matter if it's Martin giving up those 6 sacks except he will cost $13 million less in cap space?

Who are the Lt's for the best passing teams in the league? The best LT is some of you don't even know & his name is Ryan Clady & he was selected way after Jake long the same year in the draft!

If every fan & Ireland thinks like you two dumbells, we'd overpay every guy on this roster & suck for the last 5 years.

Oh Wait, we already do!

Dashi Just Goes On A RANT!!

HOW JAKE IS 1 OF THE 2 BEST LEFT TACKLES IN THE PAST 15 YEARS!!!

AND THIS EGREGIOUS IGNORAMUS!!!!!!

SAYS REPLACE LONG WITH MARTIN!!!

MARTIN CAN PLAY 2 LIFETIMES!! AND HE WON'T AMOUNT TO JAKES FIRST 5 YEARS IN THE LEAGUE!!!

NEVER MIND THE HOLE!! AT RT!! U JUST CREATED!! U JUST MADE ANOTHER HOLE!! ON THE LEFT SIDE!! NOW WE ARE BACK TO SQUARE 1!!! WITH ONLY A CENTER!!!

THE TRUTH SOUNDS LIKE SPORANO!!! TO DASHI!!

CONSISTENCY!! THAT IS ANOTHER THING WE HAVEN'T EVEN TALKED ABOUT!! HOW CONSISTENCY!! HELPS A O-LINE!!!

Philbin FINALLY IS BUILDING SOME CONSISTENCY ON THE LINE!! AND U WANT TO DESTROY IT!!

U IGNORAMUS!!

Well LOL, what you are failing to realize (Hi Clue btw) is that they would have to dump a 1st or 2nd on a RT/LT again to get one of Martins level. Now you have 2 subpar linemen. Great!

Has Ireland been fired yet?

LOL,

You're obviously one of the guys on here with a reading comprehension. (Maybe stick to some of the posts with smaller words and less sentences).

I already acknowledged that people will claim it will be a popularity contest and he's getting there on reputation. (you obviously don't read English). My point is, if he's SO bad, as a lot of you claim, wouldn't word have gotten around the league by now and these 'dumb fans' that you talk about, wouldn't they have clued in to just how much his game has dropped? Could it maybe be he's not NEARLY as bad as the DUMB fans in Miami make him out to be. Mark in TO, is DEAD right. You let Long go and you won't get anyone close to him in FA and I for one am saying Martin won't be as good at LT and good luck getting a RT. Does the idea of Gabe Carimi as franchise RT rings any bells for anyone?

If you've watched A game this year and think Martin would be better than Long you are insane.

Posted by: CommonSense | November 28, 2012 at 02:27 PM

Quick, name the LT's for the best passing teams in the NFL without using google.

LT's are important but, when the team has this many holes, you find an adequate replacement & use the left over $$ to fill other needs.

You wanna pay a guy up towards $14 mil who's play has declined the last 2 years & has already given up 6 sacks this season when you can switch Martin for $1 mil, address other needs & get about the same play with getting more upside?

THis isn't Madden football. You don't need elite players all over the field.

CraigM,

Regardless that this blog topic is about Babin, there really isnt much to say about it, without finding different ways to keep saying the same old thing. All I know is that he had a all pro 2011 season getting after the qb with 18.5 sacks. But the con is he totally sucks at playing the run.

I love what he can possibly bring to the table as a pass rusher. But at 32yrs of age there's more downside than upside to him.

Lets face face it, we're not a couple years away to winning a sb. Odds are, by the time we are that kind of team, Babin wont be a part of it anyway. So, what we'll have to pay to keep a player that wont transform us into an instant, even close to elite team, just isnt close to worth it.

Forget Babin, Get a true #1 WR, or Catching TE.

Jets Suck!

FYI Clady was the 12th overall pick... seriously?

Well LOL, what you are failing to realize (Hi Clue btw) is that they would have to dump a 1st or 2nd on a RT/LT again to get one of Martins level. Now you have 2 subpar linemen. Great!

Posted by: CommonSense | November 28, 2012 at 02:36 PM

First of all Troll Hunter, I'm not clue. Stick to what ya know which based on your posts, isn't a whole lot.

But, I digress. Who says you have to spend a 1 & 2? Again with your elitists view point.

Do you create a need at LT by moving Martin there? NO. You create a need at RT. Which can be address in FA as well.

You know, by saving 13 mil on Longs contract, you can short up about 3 other needs with that money.

Boy, some of you boys are THICK....AND DUMB!

I agree you don't need a big name LT. Look at teams that do, they don't have the greatest records. Browns are a perfect example.

My arguement is, I am not sure you are going to find an upgrade for Long for Cheaper or less risk. If you re-sign for 1 year (Tag) and he gets out of slump great, if not then you worry about it. Address other issues now instead of creating a new one.

Hahaha, this numbnut thinking Clady is the best LT. hahaha, just shut up already

Dude, you just prove you can't argue with stupid. And Clady was a 12th overall pick. Last time I checked 12th pick was in the first round buddy...

Well if you aren't clue you are on the same level...

LOL,

Maybe you should let other talk about football, cause you obviously have no clue what you're talking about. Ryna Clady was 'drafted way after Long'. Yeah if you mean ELEVEN spots, then you're right. Don't remember ELEVEn spots being considered 'way after', but whatever meets your argument I guess.

And for the record, Ryan Clady gave up 24.5 sacks over a three year period, or about EIGHT sacks a season (I'll save you having to take the socks and shoes off). I'll also let you in on a little secret.....8 sacks a year is more than 4.5 (in case you missed that one, being off sick from school). So the guy you're putting on a pedestal, has been less effective in pass protection and he also turned down a 5 year/$50 million deal. So I guess the Broncos must be nuts!

Long's on the market and he'll be snapped up by the likes of the Bills, Chiefs or Cardinals in a hearbeat. We finally get a guy who could be a franchise QB and what you guys want to do is get rid of a guy who's a perennial Pro Bowler protecting him for some hairbrain plan of Martin at LT and Mystery Man at RT. Great plan guys....no wonder the fans from around the league laugh at you!

Anyways Mark and Craig are def 2 peas in a pod I can see why you Canadians have s h i t for brains and can never stand on its own as a nation. They resort to calling you names when you in fact tell the TRUTH.

Guys,

Jake Long has never been great against speed rushers anyway. At any point in his career. The thing is, coaching staffs in Miami have to finally realize and accept this, and start giving Long intermittant help when facing top nfl speed rushers.

Long's never been consistently great at handling speed rushers and isnt going to suddenly get better at this overnight. As a 1st overall pick, you would like for your LT to be able to stonewall speed rushers. But this has never been Jake Long's primary forte.

Our offensive coaching staff just needs to suck it up and give Long help against great peed rushers and I believe Long should work out just fine.

Just like last year these meaningless wins turn out worsening our draft position again.

Craig To Answer Ur Question On Babin!

NOBODY CARES ABOUT A DE!! THE D-LINE IS NOT THE FINS PROBLEM!!

We Have 3 Young Guys!! With More Potential!! And More Invested!! Than To Waste Roster Spots or Picks On DE's!!

NOW IF BABIN!! WAS A CB!! OR A WR!!

EVERYONE HERE WILL BE GOING CRAZY!! MANDO WOULD HAVE HOURLY UPDATES!!!

But a DE?

We Have 4 Of Those!! And 3 Are Under 25! 2 of Them Are Rookies!! And Vernon is Only 21! 11 YEARS YOUNGER THAN BABIN!!

TO PUT IT INTO CONTEXT!!

OLIVIER! IS 2 YEARS YOUNGER THAN JARVIS JONES!! SAME AGE AS MINGO!!

THE FINS DON'T NEED DE's!!

WE NEED CB's!! LB's!! And 1 FS!! ON DEFENSE!!

No D-Line!! ReSign Starks!!

Long is on the downside of his career, No Sense.

Martin is only a rookie & has upside which Long does not. He is also a Natrual LT, who protected Andrew Luck in College.

Let's stop pretending Long has been this dominant Hall of Fame LT. He hasn't. He hasn't even been the best LT from his draft class.

And lets stop pretending Martin would be a bad LT. He wouldn't be much worse than Long. And if he costs 14 million less, who's really gonna complain that he gives up 6 sacks like the 10 million dollar man??

Long has declined 2 years running. It's plummeted this year. He would be no better than Martin switching back to his NATURAL LT position from College.

What's the matter fan boys? Afraid to have a jersey for another departed phin haningin in your closet that you can't wear?

lol.

John Abraharam
Dwight Freeny
Mario Williams

What do they all have in common??

LOL,

I'll bet you you couldn't even name THREE RTs in the draft without looking it up and you're preparing to start f8cking around with the OL.

How do YOU know what Martin can and can't do at LT? You've never seen him play the position in the NFL. So you're basing your opinion on what? A GUESS?

Thank God you're not GM of this team. The fact that Long would be snapped up by ANY needy teams out there that need a LT tells me all I need to know about keeping him. It's not your money, so shut the f8ck up!

Great response LOL, would you like to address the RT spot then or just keep spouting nonsense or no sense as you would say.

And you want to pay 13 million for a turnstile.

Fake Long is done you MORONS.

lol
lol

Dashi,

DE's not a problem on this team? It most certainly f8cking is. I saw it with my own two eyes in person in Buffalo two weeks ago, when Fitzpatrick went practically untouched. You're going to see it this weekend too, when Brady has all day in the pocket. Let's talk about it again this time next week and you can tell me that DE isn't a priority on this team. It's probably the number one priority right now (seeing that finding a top WR isn't an option right now).

We need to target Matt Barkley and do whatever it takes to draft him. He's every bit as good as Andrew Luck.

Try reading No Sense. I mentioned FA for a RT.

But, you wanna play this game as if I'm dfucking you. LOL

Cute, even for a putz!

And BTW, Craig idiot boy, Clady had a rough year Blocking for WHO last year? Tim Tebow! End of story!

Clady was DOMINANT his rookie year & just gave up his 1st sack of the season this year in week 12.

Yea, Mark in Gayronto, that's BETTER than Jack long TODAY.

I know the truth is hard to swallow but, try!

Its just hilarious how you guys love Jake Long so much his man crush on him is disgusting, he's been on the decline ever since Sparano left him in in preseason and got his knee rolled up on in against Dallas.

His sholuder cant hold up anymore a post steroid Shawn Merriman leveled fat a s s Jake. It was embarassing to have this guy on the field.

His concussed brains forget that he had to be on the field for a attempted FG and cost us a TO, yea hes worth 13 million you sheeps are fools

LOL, really don't give a crap. All you do is spout off your useless opinion with blinders on. Not to mention when you get called out on your BS you just fail to address it again...

Tebow was to blame for many of the sacks. Holding onto the ball too long, slow release.

Many of his scrambles on pass plays, if stopped behind the line, they count as sacks. Can't blame their oline for those

You have to look beyond the numbers when looking at last years Denver O.

Tebow played for what 8-10 games?

You guys thinking Jake Long's done. Bill bellichick may not see it your way next season when Long's in a Pats uniform. Just might be Long's way of ramming it up your a*sses.

I lived 45 minutes south of philly babin sucks i dont think the Dolphins should not pick him up he was one of reason eagles locker room was bad because of him.

I have blinders on? WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL

I wonder what you call wanting to resign Jake Long for about $13 mil when he has shown nothing but, regression the last 2 years.

Get a grip & a clue NONSENSE!

Shula 73,

Barkley could drop to us and we'll have to take him. Not sure if I'd trade up though.

You guys thinking Jake Long's done. Bill bellichick may not see it your way next season when Long's in a Pats uniform. Just might be Long's way of ramming it up your a*sses.

Posted by: Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | November 28, 2012 at 03:00 PM

Let Belli pay him $13-15 mil. Who cares?

Wake will run right around him any way just like all other speed rushers!!

You should know all about swallowing ...

Whats the one thing we can count on?

IRELAND TO MAKE THE WRONG DECISIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's DONE.!

lollol

Uh, 11 starts last year for tebow. 3 the year before & 39 sacks in those 11 games.

LOL has a point about Tebow & Clady sack totals.

So now it's Tebow's fault that Clady gave up 24.5 sacks over THREE years? You guys are f8cking HILARIOUS!! Tebow played 11 games last year. Mobile QB. And for that Clady gets off the hook??? Hilarious!!
