Babin doesn't make sense in Miami but don't discount the notion

[UPDATE: The Dolphins were reportedly one of eight teams to put in a waiver claim for Jason Babin. This obviously speaks to the idea discussed below that the team wants pass-rush help opposite Cameron Wake. Babin goes to Jacksonville and will face the Dolphins Dec. 16]

[UPDATE 2: Now we learn that reports saying the Dolphins put in a claim are not accurate. Apparently only three teams put in claims -- Washington, Jacksonville and Bills. Babin goes to the Jaguars. Still.]

Jason Babin?

He's available and he had 18 sacks in 2011. He is a 4-3 defensive end and the Dolphins play the 4.3. He fits an immediate need for a team needing pass rush help on the other side of Cameron Wake.

But ...

Babin wants to go to a winner and according to some reports he became something of a problem in the Philadelphia locker room because the team wasn't winning. Well, the Dolphins are 5-6 and not considered a team that's winning.

Is acquiring Babin Joe Philbin's style. No, in fact, it would go against his stated approach of having a certain kind of player that advances and fits into the program. Babin reportedly complained and second-guessed and, wait for it, had opinions during his time in Philadelphia.

Philbin doesn't want that in his locker room.

Babin's 32 years old. So what? The Dolphins are going to do exactly the opposite of what they've been doing -- that is, letting younger players such as Jared Odrick and Olivier Vernon show themselves and develop? Hard to fathom an about-face on this.

Babin is also something of an engima. He has only 5.5 sacks this year. He's had more games without a sack than games in which he got a sack. If you notice the Eagles' record the past two years, obviously Babin is not a difference maker. They stunk with him playing well, they stink with him playing poorly.Believe it or not, the Eagles have lost each of the last four games in which Babin has recorded a sack.

I'm not saying it is his fault they lost the game. I'm just saying his limited contribution hasn't made a difference.

Babin is also subject to waivers. There is one report that the Ravens will definitely claim him. The Ravens, by the way, are behind the Dolphins in the priority waivers claim order. So if the report is correct the Dolphins would have to claim Babin to get him. They would not be able to sign him as a free agent after waivers expire.

Claiming Babin means taking on his contract which has $1.75 million left on it in salary this year and extends through 2015 with salaries of $4.25 million next year and $6 million in '14 and '15.

You'll hear the term "Wide 9" scheme as it relates to what Babin is best suited for. Forget that. If a guy can rush the QB, he can rush the QB. Plus the Dolphins employ a bit of that anyway. Not a factor here.

Did I mention Babin is limited against the run? He's not that good against the run. There, I said it.

Yes, the Dolphins need a counter to Cameron Wake. Yes, Babin is probably a better pass rusher than anyone else currently on the roster.

But from waiver claim issues to locker room issues to age, there are serious reasons to doubt Babin fits. It doesn't make sense. (So, of course, don't be surprised if the Dolphins are interested).

Mark has swallowed loads.

Toronto, go worry about Hockey & the CFL.

Your ignorance & lack of intellect is even below average for Canadians.

Good thing Good point and LOL are the same person! Also if you want to make that arguement, what Great QB did Long block for the last 4 years. Seriously man, give it a rest.

Craig M, Ease up with your poor choice of words ( f8ck ). Because it shows us how SMART you really are. I thought you were better than that.

Canadien frogs should stick to ice fishing.

So now it's Tebow's fault that Clady gave up 24.5 sacks over THREE years? You guys are f8cking HILARIOUS!! Tebow played 11 games last year. Mobile QB. And for that Clady gets off the hook??? Hilarious!!

Posted by: Craig M | November 28, 2012 at 03:06 PM

Of course you'll dimisss it because how else could you defend wanting to retain a washed up Jake Long?

As clueless as you are, you can't be this dumb.

Go look at the numbers of sacks tebow has given up per start. You might be surprised.

Actually I know you will be because you

Craig = Village Idiot

ESPN REPORTING:

PATS CLAIM BABIN WILL PLAY THIS WEEKEND

NONSENSE,

Now, I'm good point? LOL

Because someone happens to agree with me & not you?

You gang up on EVERYONE that disagrees with you nimrods?

Some badn of brothers you are LMAO

NExt time I'm sure you or Craig Idiot boy M will call me a jet fan. LOL

LOL,

My point is that when when playing against great speed rushers smart coaching staffs will give Long help. Sure you would like to see Long handle speed rushers better. But it not like the guy's giving up 2-3 sacks in single games. That may have only happen once a year with Long. Long's still considered one of the top run blocking LT's in the game.

Also, with a qb thats a more pocket savy like Brady, he give up a few less qb pressures. Tannehill still has to learn to be a little more pocket savy. But with most qb's this takes a little time and can only be gained with more experience.

As a qb, you also gotta know that if your LT as a little problem with speed rushers, that you may need to look to get the ball out of your hand a little quicker than usual. Even if it means checking down a little more when your facing defenses with a great pass rushers.

LOL, not a arguement of how terrile Tebow was... He can't beat out Sanchez.

He gave up a ton of sacks, but Long hasn't exactly been blocking for Manning for the last 4 years either.

Hey, why dont the canadians root for canadian teams? Heck, you'd never find me on the Alouette blog!!!!!!!

I don't gang up on anyone and yeah pretty sure you make up other names and respond here. but you can deny it, not like that is unexpected.

At least other people agree with me and not just myself under other names...

Yesterday, I appreciate your noncondescing response.

I counter this way. LT's aren't drafted to run block. They are drafted to pass block.

If they are going to pay him $14 million for good run blocking, it's more eividence that Ireland is clueless.

You pay BIG $$$ to LT's who can pass block without help! Jake Long has proven, 2 years running, he is no longer that guy.

And sadly, he only really was for 3 years. It's time to move on.

lollollol

Also, if I were an oc, when facing great speed rushers. I would incorporate a few more draws and screens into the game plan to slow these types down a little.

This makes the speed rushers have to hesitate a split second at the snap to honor the screen and draw plays. I can give your qb a split second more to get his passes off. Also makes your LT's job a slight bit easier when facing super speed rushers.

Suh,fined 30,0000,and I love it.

to run screens & draws you need athelteic guards which sadly, Miami also does not have.

Long's Money needs to go to other areas of need. Specifically WR's, CB's & LB's.

TYPO-30,000.Smile!

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE TIRED OF THE LOSING! ROSS IS GETTING THE MESSAGE! HELP MAKE THE CHANGE!

If JI is the GM next he will spend the cap money on Long another OL and a overrated corner, pass rusher and we will be back where we started. over paid players pass their prime, you all will see.

LOL,

Richmond Webb, God bless him, was one of the greatest pass blocking LT's we've ever had in Miami. But he was also part of the problem in having such an anemic run game in the Marino era. Individually he wasnt a terrible run blocker. But lets say that run blocking wasnt his primary forte either.

I said that to say this, its not guaranteed Martin would be a significant upgrade if moved to LT. His combine performance may indicate he still needs to add much more muscle.

So, lets say we let Long walk, and move Martin to LT. Then Martin isnt a significant upgrade to Long as a pass blocker. Then also proves not to be the run blocking force that Long is.

So, then what we have is a guy that similar to Long as a pass protector, but not nearly as good as a run blocker. So that means we lost a 1st overall pick for absolutely nothing. Downgraded the LT position even more, probably use a 2nd rd pick to replace Martin at RT, then find we still dont have a true LT.

This is what scares me about losing Long. The plan that follows this up. This fo has a poor track record at fixing mistakes. They create even more mistakes to fix one mistake.

Isnt that why after 5yrs of supposed rebuilding this still isnt quite a playoff team yet?

yes (HOme) at 3:10 - learn how to spell you fukking moron piece of sh*t inbred fukk

YG @ 3:35, don't expect LOL to listen to reason. We've been saying this to him all afternoon. He's busy sucking Clady's knob.

Ray, you're right.

The only guys who have earned extensions are Starks & hartline. If Long & S. Smith wanna stay, it has to be reasonable.

Jake shouldn't get paid as an elite LT & Smith shouldn't get #1 Cb money.

Ireland should have learned his lesson in 2008 with Bell, Carey, etc. You don't invest big time money long term on losers with no upside.

I'm not saying Jakes a loser but, he isn't worth the investment anymore. His money should be better spent on other pressing needs such as DB, LB's & WR's.

LOL,

Also I never said they have to resign Long or he is the "best ever LT." I said they really don't have much of an option. see YG at 3:35 (or any of my earlier post)...

If we let Long walk, all we've accomplished is to create one more huge hole on the roster. Dont we have enough already?

Even if we move Martin to LT, we still need a high quality RT to replace him too. If we keep having to replace positions we previously thought were fixed. We're lucky if we can make sb reservations by 2036.

Seems all we've been doing the last 5yrs is refixing positions we thought were previously fixed. 1 step forward and two steps backwards.

This all makes sense if you have a 10yr rebuilding plan. But 10yr rebuilding plans dont make much sense either. Right guys?

I said that to say this, its not guaranteed Martin would be a significant upgrade if moved to LT. His combine performance may indicate he still needs to add much more muscle.

Posted by: Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | November 28, 2012 at 03:35 PM

I didn't say martin has to be an upgrade. I said he could probably provide the same kind of production long does right now. With the benefite being twofold:

1. He is young with upside which long no longer has on his side
2. He will cost approximately $10-13 million less than Long for similar production.

You'd get what you pay for. And what LOGICAL PHIN FANS need to ask themselves is do you wanna spend $13-14 million for production you can get out of a 1 million player? Or do you wanna pay $1 million for it & have the extra cash to fill other voids this team has?

And again, ty for the coherent, non condesceing responses unlike Mr. Sense & Craig(I'm so smart & your so dumb) M.

LOL, when was I condescending? You call me an idiot every 5 seconds because I disagree with you. So don't play that game man.

The price of Long isn't great especially if he doesn't play up to that level, but cutting him lose is basically taking a step back somewhere else. Because you have to replace at that point.

LOL @ 3:45 PM,

I would be completely onboard with what youre saying if the track record of this fo wasnt so completely shakey. I just dont have enough faith in this curreent fo to make the correct follow-up.

Trying to fix one hole usually means creating 2-3 more holes at other positions, just trying to get 1 position right. Never seen anything like it.

YG @2:46 is spot on. I posted a comment two weeks ago as to why weren't we discussing Long the first 5 games. Long was drafted by Parcels, who by the way was a "pound the ball" kind of guy. Sparano had the same philosophy and as long as we have a good running game Long will be fine. The running game opens Play action, Screens etc. and that takes pressure off the O line in pass protection situations. Since we don't have a #1 receiver the opposing secondary can easily play man to man allowing the 4 D line and LB core to rush the passer. 5 stopping a 7 man rush is not good math.

Change of subject... I want the Fins to go after Wallace in the offseason to take care of a playmaker and down field threat...
However i just read Tomlin has named Wallace a Co-starter and could be removed from his starting role because of how hes not being targeted in the past few games..
Do you see Philbin wanting to go after him given his recent rant?

It could only reduce his asking price if he has a down year. His targets are down because the Steelers have nothing without Ben

I don't see what Miami has to lose by putting in a claim on him if he hits the waiver wire. We sorely lack another pass rusher other than Cam Wake. A better pass rush would help offset our lousy secondary. If the guy wants to play for Miami then bring him on board...at least for the rest of the season.

Can we all agree that the Dolphins pass rush problems are not the fault of Jeff Ireland?

Posted by: LOL | November 28, 2012 at 04:05 PM

Yeah I know, its a character situation if hes going to be a headache if things dont go his way as he already held out and now this..

So the dolphins were not interested in Babin, he has already gone to Jax and you are writing this article because?

"Winning now" is never our strategy. We are a "win later" team. This year is not so great but the future is bright....this has been the Fins strategy since 1983, the last time we went to the Super Bowl.

I actually like the coaches now and think we are on our way to being respectable.

I think we should trade Ireland for Wes Welker and get him back; then trade Jlo for a 7th round conditional draft choice, depending on whether she shows up to games; sell the team to Trump to bring back style and class and hire all the 1972 season players as assistant coaches.

Maybe Babin is NOT the answer, but we Definately need another pass rusher! Odrick is NO D.E. Way too slow

Wrong again. The Dolphins need pass rushing help from the middle linebacker.
