Bills beat up the Dolphins up front

BUFFALO --Sometimes football truly is, as coach Joe Philbin says, not that difficult a game.

Much of it is as simple as blocking and tackling.

And so if you're wondering why the Buffalo Bills, a team that is the worst in the NFL at stopping the run, could stop the Dolphins Thursday night, all you have to do is look at the blocking and tackling.

The Bills tackled and they beat the Dolphins off blocks.

It wasn't any exotic scheme that helped the Bills. It wasn't a team stacking the tackle box against Reggie Bush that limited Miami to only 60 rushing yards and 2.5 yards per carry.

It was the Bills simply beating the Dolphins physically up front.

"You got to give credit to them. They did a good job up front," said quarterback Ryan Tannehill. "They weren't bringing safeties down. They did a good job of shedding blocks and making tackles. There were a few times I turned around and there was really just nowhere to run. And that's with no safeties being in there. So you have to credit their front seven for doing a good job of making it difficult to run."

So, as I told Tannehill, what he's saying is the Bills were winning up front. They were beating the Miami blocking up front.

"For some of the game, yeah," Tannehill said. "We just couldn't get things going."

That's it. In a nutshell.

The team that was giving up an average of 163.7 yards per game on the ground coming into this game beat the Dolphins physically up front.

And that leads me to this question:

How is it that an offensive line with a first-round pick at left tackle, a first-round pick at center, a second-round pick at right tackle, a third-round pick at right guard and a guy who was signed as a free agent solution a couple of years ago at right guard get beat physically?

By that team that was so, so terrible previously?

Cause Jeff Ireland is a Drafting/Player Developmental Genius.....That's why.

yep,,, whats the gangs excuses for tonights horrid performance....

I've never heard this staff make any excuses for a bad performance.

Same as the Tenn. Game.

If these past two games don't project exactly why it is PARAMOUNT we acquire a good, explosive, young receiver, and a sound veteran receiver, in the 2013 offseason....Then reality has truly gone to hell, as we know it, and bring on the 2012 End of Days.
Our inability to register big plays, late in games, through the air is beyond pitiful.
I'd love to blame Tannehill and him being a rookie...whatever, whatever...ect. but I implore you all, that our lack of legitimate weapons would hinder Dan Marino, let alone a 1st year, former wideout.

Not saying it would solve all our problems....But at least the THREAT of a big play would possibly force defenses to play us mildly different.

Tanny will only be fine if a new GM -not Ireland- surrounds him with talent. We knew this was a rebuilding year so the question begs why did Ireland unloaded people like Marshall and Davis and did not trade someone like Dansby and his ridiculous salary?

Unlike the Marlins, the Phins have a loyal following that could endure another terrible season stats-wise with at least the promise of building a better future. But that is exactly why Ireland is just incapable to fulfill his job duties. He, NOT the Dolphins, could not afford another 4-12 season for his own job safety, that is why we have a product that will yield yet another 8-8 season at best and further erode any hopes for a REAL turnaround.

So the responsibility lies with Ross for showing once more he lacks the gonads to make the same sort of business decisions he shows in real estate translate into football ones. Until he keeps Ireland nothing will truly change. This team will still carry dead weight with it next year in the form of Dansby and others, and will have to make a decision about Long, Bush, Fasano and others. I highly doubt all those three players will go the way Solai did this year. So why were they kept with basically no return to show for?

And that is just one of the inefficiencies Mr. Ireland needs to justify to Mr. Ross. His draft choices and his "business" moves borderline the mediocre threshold. He gave away Marshall and Davis for peanuts, of course would not be peanuts if he shows better judgement when the draft and FA arrive. Egnew, Martin, and all the WRs he drafted this year are busts. Even with Miller that jury is still out there.

This just shows what I always thought of him, he's a good scout, not GM material. Yes he's capable to find some acorns that blossom, Wake is one of them, but he can not run a team's destiny into a never ending acorn quest. With all that said my biggest concern is what happens to Philbin if a new GM is mercifully -for this suffering fan base- finally chosen. These remaining games should tell us the answer.

Philbin said he didn't want any mistakes tonight. I think the players thought he was using reversed psychology.

Two biggest holes? No1 reciever and a weak secondary. Who did we trade away? Solid-great corner and a number 1 reciever without filling the holes. If Ireland keeps his job i will stop watching my beloved Dolphins after 26 years. Ross needs to wake up.

two INTs in the last 4 minutes wont win you a game either.
Also 3 turn-overs in the 4th Quarter will never win you a game when trailing by 12 going into said 4th quarter.
JMHO, I might be wrong, I'm not a expert

miami was outplayed by two teams in two weeks that coming in was rated as some of the worst in rushing defenses at the bottom of the league and yet miami was totally shut down for the most part.....

If I am the O-line coordinator, i might want to put in my weeks resignation by the end of the year...just sayin

It's such a waste to have that many high draft picks on the offensive line generally but the fact that we don't even have an average line to show for it means its time for Ireland to go. If he gets a hold of all those high picks he will waste them guaranteed.

Love the way Mando tacit the obvious. But at the end it is up to Ross to make that call. How much more proof does he need that Mr. Ireland is not GM material? Good scout yes, GM NOT!

Biggest need - QB

If RT has no time to throw, and running backs have no where to run, it won't matter who we draft.

This O line needs serious help.

Cesar, I have no idea what that has to do with anything but I actually agree with you, lol!

Hartline and bess cannot carry the offense anymore than young tannehill can...He needs help from them as much as he needs to improve himself

Asking him to dink and dunk to hartline and bess and hoping that they become the YAC recievers that they ARENT is not helping this offense put points on the board...

It is almost comical that other GMs see the writing on the wall and opt NOT to draft players like Martin and Miller -for a good reason as it turns out- and we applauded Ireland for such "steals". Way too funny, oh wait!

I believe the Fins are LA bound within the next three years (or some other city).

If Ross does, please leave the Dolphins name behind.

Has Ireland been fired yet?

The only thing saving miamis defense being compared to the likes of the saints is that their redzone defense is surprisingly good otherwise the dogs wouldve been out early and often in this game tonight and tannehills performance wouldnt have even been an issue for this team losing....

Tannehill reminds me of a poor man's Henne.

Fins have gone from Trifecta to Twofecta and now to Onefecta.

When will they go to Nofecta?

course that all will change two weeks from today when a team rolls into south beach that will put points up like candy against this group...

Is Sherman getting out-coached like Henning was by opposing teams?

Packers and texas A&M Didnt fire the man for nothin u know...just sayin

How do you answer the thrashing that Tenn gave us?

A: Not this way!

Another mistake filled, uninspired game. Reggie Bush seems to be getting disconnected from the game plan and I'm not sure why? Danny Thomas is a sluggo, non answer at RB. At least Bush has some home run type ability. Line has to block better regardless.

The game featured a ton of terrible calls vs our DBs (mainly Carrol). That whack to Hartline's head early that didn't get called was criminal. A face mask or two that didn't get called. In the end, you have to make more plays and not leave it to ref's calls.

The continuing Tannehill to Hartline chemistry and the fact that WR Rishard Mathews got some decent reps was the only silver lining.

If the Fins don't bow their backs vs Seattle, NE and SF they will be roasted to no end.

...sad...the early season held such fleeting promise.

I would not sign Long to a mega long term contract. He seems to be slipping. A nice hometown discount and we should listen.

So many missed tackles of late?

From here on out it is simply where the Fins draft 2013.

Cheers to all those fans that hang in their despite the dead fish play the team turns in lately.

Move Tanny to WR?

It really must be a relief for opposing DCoord's and particularly Secondary coaches to wake up Monday morning and say, "Man...We got the Dolphins this week, right? Welp...Guess we can start prepping for NEXT week. ONE...TWO...THREE...D-B's!!!!! Alright, see you guys in twelve days!!!!!

Also...Nolan Carroll couldn't cover a baby, with a blanket.

Its simple...the book is out on our schemes. The coaches have figured out how to exploit a team that
...has no deep threat
...only zone blocks
....no speedy te to cover
....no discipline lb's to cover screens
....our best corner is slightly above average
....c clemons is garbage
.....n carroll 's tendencies have been figured
We stink something fierce!
On bright side, Reshad Jones has played very well

I really thought they could of won this one game. Philbin has poor talent. Reggie Bush has lost it and tanny is a definite BUST

Why are we not using Reggie more? When we are down on PR? Running him more? Using him in the passing game? I just don't get it.

Is anyone else getting tired of seeing our secondary being called for the most minor, ticky tack pass interference calls, while the opponents are much more blatant in their handling of our receivers with at most an illegal use of the hands call? I hate the PI penalty in the first place, and often call BS when we get one we shouldn't, as it's STILL the refs screwing up. Defenders are all over our receivers, and we rarely get a call, while our DB's need only touch the opposing WR to get flagged, even on the opposite side of the field from where the play was. It's been this way for years, and I for one am getting tired of it.

Crazy, its been 5yrs now, and with Parcells and his lineage, we still arent able to come into an offseason with only 2-3 holes left to fill. Not to count the holes not yet addressed, those having to be re-addressed, and those recreated such as in Marshall and Davis' situation.

How can this team truly move forward. Has anyone addressed Jeff Ireland you dont get 10yrs to build a playoff team? and out of town dolfans wonder why the home stadium is always so empty. Local money spending dolfans are truly fed up.

I was at tonight's game and what is troubling is the non existent running game. The past two weeks we have played two of the worst run defenses in the nfl. There has been a case made for keeping jake long, well these past two games would be a case for getting rid of him. Also why not a steady diet of screen passes to bush. Get this guy in space. Is Davone bess our new deep threat?. Twice he's going deep for a pass. I just don't see direction on offense. One last thing. Can Egnew get on the field. We need playmakers. A third rd pick for an inactive player. How does Ireland not get held accountable. Just a joke all around

Guys keep asking why Bush isnt used more are not very football educated. Think about it. You dont think the guys actually getting paid to figure this out havent already?

When an offense is as limited as this one is, its easy for a defense to take that option away from you. Guys, youre not smarter than the offensive coaches. If they could do it, it would have been done already.

Its such a shame. This game may be evidence the players are giving up on this new coaching staff. I relly dont see another win the rest of this season.

I hated Tannehill being taken 8th overall. Still I very badly hope it works out. QB is the most difficult position to recover from when yure wrong. So those of you hoping Tannehill's a bust dont truly know what youre wishing for.

Season over 10 months of misery

It sucks, but Im truly resigned to I may not see a very good fins team until I first see a SSI check. This maybe Irelands best draft but its still isnt nearly good enough.

Even if we lose the remaining games, go 4-12, I dont have a threads confidence left that Ireland put the correct players together to make much of a difference next year.

As to the trolls already calling Tannehill a bust, how well do you think your beloved, one and only Dan Marino would have done with several Nat Moore wannabes instead of having at least one Duper, or Clayton? Nat was one of my favorite players, but it was clear that he would always be the slot guy, in on three and four wide sets only. Hartline would do ok as a number two, but I believe he is better suited in the slot, with an absolute burner as the number two, and a mega beast as the number one. Bess does fine in the slot, but I think he's best suited for the fourth slot possession receiver. With nobody that scares opposing D's we can't expect Tannehill to do more than learn and grow this year. For the Moron that called him a poor man's Henne, just remember how little Henne was willing to take shots down field, even with Brandon Marshall. Tannehill will at least try to get something deep every once in a while with NOBODY. Heck, he's thrown deeper passes to his TE's than Henne consistently did to his WR's, so give the kid a break.

After the game i went to Wal-Mart for more beer their was this homeless guy out front so i said what the hell and gave him the rest of my season tickets, he look at them and gave them back he said he wasn't that bad off.Nice job Jeff you sure can pick em'.

Even if we go 4-12 and pick top 6, I have almost no hope the 2013 team finishes better than 6-10 at best. That would be 6yrs on the payroll with Ireland and still not a solid playoff team.

I have no problem with dumping Marshall and Davis, but no immediate plan was put in place to repalce them. That equates to chopping of the nose to spite the face. Even with a top 6 pick next year it scares hell out of me Jeff Ireland will be making those picks.

I suspect there is a physical conditioning problem... The entire team fades away as the season progresses. Early in the games the players are almost lethargic with the opponents so much more explosive. With the wear of the game it seems to be better, so endurance seems ok.

Never even once under Don Shula was 8-8 a reason to celebrate. It was sign of mediocrity. Now local fans would dance in the streets for a .500 finish. This is truly unacceptable.

Ireland says it wasnt a rebuilding season. Yet he and Ross go out and hire a new hc they knew would bring a new offensive and defensive system. Are Ireland/Ross to dumb to realize that also meant wholesale changes needed to be made on both offense and defense.

Geesh, these guys are stupid.

This was the 1st time I got to watch a game on actual TV. The rest of the games I have watched online where things are choppy much of the time. I must say I never seen a OL whiff on so many blocks. I mean really how do they wake up in the morning knowing you are killing your RB and QB.

I knew we had issues in the secondary last year, I knew we needed WR to stretch the field and I knew the right side of the OL would struggle. What I didn't know was that players who we thought were sure things perform like a bunch of stooges. I felt optimistic about 2013 but when your only hope hangs on the performance of the punter and a developing QB that is when you realize that there is not much to hope for.

we need corners first

They make me want to puke!!!!!

Could we possibly hire an OC under the age of 65??????

I had a Galvanizing Moment tonight!

Dansby shoots the A-Gap!

Untouched, he has Spiller Dead To Rights! 4 Yards deep in his own Back Field!

Then, Fit........lol........Fitz.........(snicker).........FITZGERALD(ROTFLMFAO) knocks him BACK To THE SECOND LEVEL!

Fitzgerald, The "Quarterback", Just Be-Atch Smacked Dansby back to his own side of the Field!

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

Can you imagine a Quarterback embarrassing Butkis like THAT?

Are you kidding me? Butkis would have committed suicide by morning!

Of course Butkis wouldn't let any "Quarterback" smack him around like that in the first place-LOL!

It wasn't just that play either. Dansby was pretty much neutralized all game. Thats supposed to be the Man! The 50 Million Dollar Man! Thats supposed to be "Our" Urlacher!

Fvcking Shyt Man! I don't even know what to say. I'm demoralized as a Fan and I feel "Embarrassed" by Dansby!

If I was Philbin at this point, I'd have Coyle move Dansby outside right now. Let him start getting used to it for next year.

We're going to have to pay Dansby's salary next year anyways. We might as well try to get 1 or 2 more years at OLB. But I wouldn't have him waste anymore time at MLB. Let him start the transition back RIGHT NOW for next year.

Another reason we probably keep Dansby is because we don't want to start 2 or 3 rookies at LB next year. Burnette and Misi need to go though. Keep Dansby outside and try to draft the "Real" MLB from Norte Dame.

Fitzpatrick just ruined Dansby for me. I will never be able to take him serious again. At MLB, he's a Pretender at best. Everytime I look at him, I'll think about Fitz and the Smack Down!

Hard to understand Dolphins play currently from the view as a playoff contender just 3 games ago. During the 2nd Jets game it looked like the team was ready to establish itself in the top tier of the NFL. The Miami team now looks like a dispirited, undisciplined group looking for leadership.

In the 2 weeks prior the Indianapolis game there was much talk about how the Dolphins players, fans and even national media had bought into the new systems brought to Miami by its new coaches. Even Jeff Ireland was starting to look good to many. However, after 3 poorly played losses, the tables have turned.

This team still has talent but can we be sure it has fully bought into the new culture trying to be established by Joe Philbin and company?

The trading of B. Marshall; the dismissal of Chad Johnson; the benching of Matt Moore; V. Davis' forced departure to another NFL city and many other smaller decisions haven't gone down well with the team's veterans. With questionable results from game planning, play calling, clock management and other coach-directed activities, game-time coaching can't be thrilling the players, either.

There is too much talent on the starting roster for the Dolphins to be playing like they are now. It looked as if they were all on the same page in the Jets game. But it looks now as if they're not even looking at the same book.

This is a really good read for me. Must agree that you are one of the coolest blogger I ever saw. Thanks for posting this useful information. This was just what I was on looking for. I'll come back to this blog for sure!

I got a QUESTION for ALL of those who were so PI$$ED @ the fan who said what everybody was thinking.....

Bottom line, tannehill sucks! Another chance to win the game and what does he do? Pick. This loser is a joke. He is not the answer.

Sometimes football truly is, as coach Joe Philbin says, not that difficult a game.

Good start to the Blog Armando....I say the same SH@T ALL the time......

It wasn't a team stacking the tackle box against Reggie Bush

GOOD....so lets END that MYTH that I have read a BILLION times in this blog....

"You got to give credit to them. They did a good job up front," said quarterback Ryan Tannehill. "They weren't bringing safeties down. They did a good job of shedding blocks and making tackles. There were a few times I turned around and there was really just nowhere to run.

We said Tanne was smart......I guess he know when to throw his OL UNDER the BUS.....lol....

It's not my fault coach.....I only thru 2 picks in the last 2 MIN of the game.....but look @ the OL.....

Is the real story hear that Tanne is skidish?????
