Bills beat up the Dolphins up front

BUFFALO --Sometimes football truly is, as coach Joe Philbin says, not that difficult a game.

Much of it is as simple as blocking and tackling.

And so if you're wondering why the Buffalo Bills, a team that is the worst in the NFL at stopping the run, could stop the Dolphins Thursday night, all you have to do is look at the blocking and tackling.

The Bills tackled and they beat the Dolphins off blocks.

It wasn't any exotic scheme that helped the Bills. It wasn't a team stacking the tackle box against Reggie Bush that limited Miami to only 60 rushing yards and 2.5 yards per carry.

It was the Bills simply beating the Dolphins physically up front.

"You got to give credit to them. They did a good job up front," said quarterback Ryan Tannehill. "They weren't bringing safeties down. They did a good job of shedding blocks and making tackles. There were a few times I turned around and there was really just nowhere to run. And that's with no safeties being in there. So you have to credit their front seven for doing a good job of making it difficult to run."

So, as I told Tannehill, what he's saying is the Bills were winning up front. They were beating the Miami blocking up front.

"For some of the game, yeah," Tannehill said. "We just couldn't get things going."

That's it. In a nutshell.

The team that was giving up an average of 163.7 yards per game on the ground coming into this game beat the Dolphins physically up front.

And that leads me to this question:

Why?

How is it that an offensive line with a first-round pick at left tackle, a first-round pick at center, a second-round pick at right tackle, a third-round pick at right guard and a guy who was signed as a free agent solution a couple of years ago at right guard get beat physically?

By that team that was so, so terrible previously?

Troubling.

This whole team is just PITIFUL! Offense cannot score, even field goals now? Defense cannot stop anything period? Why is Sean Smith still playing? WHy is this guy Clay still playing? What... he has caught only one pass so far this season? But the biggest question is... WHy is Ireland still the GM??? UNtil he departs this is what we'll get- GARBAGE! Oh and also, Tannehill? He's not franchise material. Another good back-up QB taken with another high draft pick that yielded YET ANOTHER BUST! Tannehill and Andrew Luck are light years away when comparing talent. Time for Moore to play and the QB search continues. Its really sad watching all those empty seats in our stadium-WAKE UP ROSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I DIDN'T WATCH THE GAME CAUSE I KNEW THE BILLS WERE GOING TO WIN..

THE WRITING WAS ON THE WALL.

I GO UP TO BUFFALO 3 TIMES A WEEK AND THEY LIVE AND DIE WITH THAT TEAM..

WIN OR LOSS..

I HAD MY FINS HARD HAT AND EVERYONE UP THERE RODE ME..

CRAIG M

YOU ARE SO RIGHT.

I ONLY BEEN IN MIAMI ONCE AND YOU WOULDN'T EVEN KNOW THE DOLPHINS WERE THERE.

ONE LAST NOTE..

FIRST THING THE DOLPHINS HAVE TO DO TO GET ON THE RIGHT TRACK IS GET RID OF EVERYTHING DAN MARINO..

STREET NAME

STATUE

FIRST OFF ITS CORNY

SECOND YOU ARE WORSHIPPING A LOSER.

CHANGE THE NAME OF THE SABAN BUBBLE

HE DONE ABSOLUTELLY NOTHING.

SEND IRELAND SOMEWHERE TO HMMMM IRELAND AS FAR AS POSSIBLE.

WE NEVER SHOULD HAVE GOT LONG BUT WE NEED HIM NOW. HE STILL BETTER THAN MOST TACKLES..

GET RID OF BESS AND HARTLINE WHICH I BEEN SAYING FOR YEARS AND GET SOME REAL WR.

Cam Wake himself is only 2-3yrs away to having serious decline in his play. Thats why if we make a pass rusher the #1 pick. We had better be 100% damn certain this guy will be an instant terror.

If this guys becomes average to mediocre. There will be huge repercusions not to far down the road when Wake's skills begin to decline.

At this stage of the game, we dont draft a pass rusher to be Wake's compliment, he has to be drafted to be the man. He has to be Wake's equal right away. If not, we had better strongly consider a compliment to Wake in the 2nd rd.

I'm not sure Matt Moore will be here next year. We have Pat Devlin, who I think is a more efficient QB than even Tannehill.

That offense last night was putrid. The oline got dominated and the playcalling was just as bad. This running game with Bush as an everydown back is a serious problem compounded by the lack of speedy receivers that can create space and get open. Got to have a #1 WR maybe 2. AND why do they not have RB's and TE's chip and double team DE's on a consistent basis??

YG,

jarvis Jones, UGA
Damontre Moore, T A&M
Sam Montgomery, LSU
barkevious Mingo, LSU

There is a difference between efficacy and efficiency. The latter is taller.

Why would you put Matt Moore in as QB now? He is gone next year, most likely... Let Tannehill get the experience he is lacking..

My definition of a pass rusher thats ready to have an instant impact in the nfl right away is a guy that has all of the pass rush moves coming into the nfl. Speed, bull, spin, hammer, everything.

If a pass rusher has only one or 2 great moves coming into the nfl. Chances are greater he'll only be a 5-8 sack a year at best pass rusher on this level. You dont use top 10 picks for that. You really dont want to use a 1st rd pick at all for that.

That was a pathetic showing. The OL is not doing the offense any favors. Is it the new scheme or are they just playing that bad?

Defense did ok, they gave up yards but held in the redzone. Had some short fields too. Just never seem to make the game changing play, Dansby having a shot at a pick or the two missed fumble recoveries. The PI calls were painful. They all weren't bad calls, but when they didn't call the hit to the head on Heartline it was annoying.

As bad as they played, they still had a chance to win at the end.

Sorry, gotta disagree with you Mark. Our money isn't tied up in Bush/Starks. The BULK of our money is tied up in Jake Long. And frankly, when he was a ProBowler, where'd that get the team? And I agree, you don't can a guy for one year, but you have to make decisions. If he picks it back up next year (and we tag him this year), then we WILL be paying top dollar for him, and for how much longer? He's in the league now 5 years. Next year will be 6. So give him top dollar for maybe 2-3 more years? Don't see him playing much past that. Only thing I see is tag him just so you don't have to fill another hole immediately, but then let him walk next year. He isn't part of our future. Like we both said back when he was signed, the team wasn't ready for him then, and now his time is nearly over, so it's bad timing all around. We need to spend money on skill position players, PERIOD. WR, TE, RB, DBs and pass rushers. ALL OUR MONEY needs to go to fortify those positions. Spending all your money on your oline is a losing strategy, sorry.

Mando ask 'why'? If I didn't know better, I would say coaches have lost the locker room.

There is no doubt we need better players on both sides of the ball to beat the better teams. But the Titans? The Bills? C'mon man. The team looks like they're sleep walking. They CAN play better but they're NOT.

For whatever reason, the coaches have not been able to get this team ready to play for the last few weeks.

DC Dolfan and others:

This team is CRAP! I had the worst attitude this morn with my family and all for what? These Fins SUCK..I was cursing all nite long...I cant stand Fasano..MEDIOCRE...Reggie Bush..where the f*** have u been..This team has no intestinal fortitude, if that is what they call it..No toughness..NO SACRIFICE..I see a bunch of prima f****** Donnas that arent worht my F****** aggravation..

Get us a real F****** team..I'm sick of this S***

Give me a product I can be proud of>>> Coaching staff looks cluless..BUT..to be honest WE could have stolen this damn game..BUT we didnt..WE SUCK..admit it all Fins Fans

Disgusted in MD

Long is having a bad year but there is a difference between having a bad year and regressing. He has multiple false start penalties because hes trying to kick step to beat the DE. Why is he doing this? Because he realizes hes lost a step.... He gets pancaked very unlike the old JL.. Meriman lit him up last night... He isnt just have a bad year, he is regressing. Some frame can hold up that much wieght other start to fail...

Simple the other team also has #1, #2 defensive players.... who want it more than the dolphins..... Phins seem to just go through the motions... reminds me of the Cam Cameron days!... they play with no passion for the past 2 games.

Could be, cocoajoe, could be. I was anxiously waiting for this Game to prove what you are saying. And you're probably right. If so, we are fukkked for the next 3 years.

I have nothing to say that says it ,,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tony, I feel you. But don't take it out on the fam. It's not their fault our team sucks. I HATE when people project their problems on me, so I try not to do it to others. We can all relate here, so we're a sounding board for each other (and things get heated sometimes due to letting off steam). But keep it here, and away from the family. Enjoy them, let them be your outlet.

Just a friendly suggestion!

We need to keep some perspective here. That playoff talk was a mirage and now we have to accept this is a team rebuilding and put aside expectations. This team is not going to the playoffs with Moore or T-Hill. My prediction yesterday was 6-10 or 7-9 for the season but 4-12 wouldn't surprise either. Playing like they did last night underscores the need to look to the future.

You think Players don't notice crazy mother fvkkers around them teling them what to do? Shula was probably not liked by many Players but he was thoroughly respected by Them.

One and done cam Cameron part 2 clean house again hire chip Kelley the miami duckins

Im out, good day fellas.

I'm with you on that Mark. I wasn't completely optimistic about this year other than saying they wouldn't be as bad as ESPN/NFL were making them out to be in the offseason.

Though what I find really concerning is that last year, they weren't getting beat this bad in this fashion. As the season went on they played better, this year they seem to be regressing over the past couple of games.

Well in retrospect philbin will get at least 3 years to show results it gonna be a long 3 years ya think

I don't believe the team is talentless. They are not playing well now but I think there is a locker room problem. Hopefully, the coaches work it out.

Dolphin offense:
Long, Incognito, Pouncy, Fasano, Bush, Hartline, Bess and Matt Moore could start on close to half of the teams in the NFL; Jerry and Martin probably good backups for those same teams. Tannehill a third QB and Lane having trouble finding a place on another roster.

Dolphin defense:
Soliai, Starks, Wake, Dansby, Burnett, Smith and Jones could start on half of the teams in the NFL. Clemmons, Misi, Odrick make good backups. Carroll would have trouble finding a new home.

There is a goodly nucleus of top tier players here. No way this team should be losing games like they are, based upon these players playing like they should.

Flushing the staff every year isn't going to solve anything. Having the wrong guy running things won't help either, but still too early to make that call. Philbin didn't walk into a great anything here.

Marc,
I like the Miami Duckins but Philbin will be back and he needs to be... He has done more with this team than most would have thought.. He needs time to get his players in and create his team.. it will happen..

I have to remain alive for the next 5 years to see my Dolphins become a good Football Team.

Is it premature to think we need to get guys like Egnew, Miller and Matthews on the field for reps? This team is going nowhere and when you accept that you must look to the future. Also, I'm beginning to believe Sherman could be a problem as OC. The whole offense is regressing. That oline is in shambles and the running attack has lost the attack part.

Any chance that Pat Devlin overtakes Tannehill in camp next year?

During the Hard Knocks show you can plainly hear Philbin praising Devlin to the other coaches saying "he's my kinda guy" and "this kid gets it".

Just saying...no one really knew what we were getting with Tannehill and from where I'm sitting, he has accuracy problems that may never get fixed.

YOU CAN'T TEACH ACCURACY !!!

YG quit.

It's just hard to fathom getting pummeled by the like of the bills and titans it was really ugly they should all give the game checks back or better yet put a stop payment on them

Problem billcale, half the guys you mentioned as a "good nucleus" are getting to the twilight of their careers. If they are kept going forward, what happens in 3-4 years when all are too old to produce anymore? Start over? Will the team do anything by then? This isn't the same game as last decade. You don't have 4-5 years to develop. You need to do it quickly, because FA and just the demands of the game have shortened players' careers. If those guys are a good nucleus, then you have to start winning immediately (like next year).

Or, you cut some of that muscle, in order to get a younger nucleus that might be here when it counts. Yes, you still need vets, but the right vets. To me, Long makes sense as a 1-yr option, because there are too many other holes to fill. But Dansby is 9 years in, and is really an OLB. Fasano is a blocking TE, that's it. Starks is good, but like others said, not the right mix of what we need. We have to create a better mix of players. So some good players will have to go. And best to replace the old with the new.

Broder, NH, that would be a hell of a HA if that were true between Tannehill and Devlin(HA,in medical terminology, is headache). But certainly, a good HA to have.

DC, I say tag him for the same reason. let him prove that this year wasn't a fluke. If he can, then yeah sign him for three more years or so. if not then let him walk after next year. We can both agree though - that we can't let him go. That would only mean spending big money on someone else's left tackle or using one of our first three picks on one and does anyone want to do that? Let's not create another hole.

Whereas with Bush and Starks (who I imagine would take up at least $10m combined on the cap next year) we have cheaper replacements in house ready to go. With Long, we definitely do not.

This blog is the only place on the face of the planet where people would be discussing (apparently in all seriousness) the idea of cleaning house YET AGAIN this offseason.

Guys, can you stop being so damn clueless for a second? Tannehill is a rookie QB. Philbin is a rookie HC. The Dolphins are a young team that was EXPECTED to struggle this year---and they are.

Those guys aren't going anywhere. Nor should they. You don't give up on players and coaches NINE GAMES into their careers---not unless you're completely, hopelessly insane (along with having the IQ of a chair).

Seriously, take a deep breath. Go outside. Buy a new shirt. Rub one out. ANYTHING. But escape from this bubble of insanity for awhile whatever you do!

I rubbed one out, last Night.

Looks like Ross will be buying boatloads of his own tickets for the remaining games LOL

The problem with Long is, who will replace him? I really don't want Jonathan on that L side, at least now.

4 consecutive losing seasons.....nice job Irescum.

Tannehill = ANOTHER IRESCUM BUST

Oscar,
Thats the other problem.. theres no depth to push the starters.. aside from QB... Theres not a Tackle on the roster that would fully step in for Long or push him to look over his shoulder

Oscar, did you do it while watching football? Cause that would be weird.

There is not a hope and a prayer that we are going to Win another Game this Season if we continue playing the way we are. 4-12 sounds about right right now. LV was wrong.

Again talking about the draft in November...How depressing...

Chad Henne, Pat White, Ryan Tannehill. Can Irescum pick QB's?? LMAO!!

After, after.

Matt Barkley, come on down.

To call Tannehill a bust after 10 games in a career is ignorant

No way do you clean house. That's ridiculous, just ignore that silliness. Losses are troll food here. This team does need different players for these systems and upgrades at positions. That will happen in large part because of all the FA's and draft picks.

Tannehill looks more like Pat White thn Chad Henne lol

Sometimes, most People need some Relief.

Bingo Bill!

If Tannehill doesn't turn out then certainly Jeff Ireland's career in Miami will be ever. This is going to be said after every game where Tannehill looks bad but whoever made the Long over Ryan call certainly set this franchise back at least five years and counting. Rams can say the same thing because Bradford hasn't been the answer either.

Shula 73... you have lost any and all credability..
Matt Barkley? a 6th round pick at best.. have you watched a game by this kid this year?
Im glad he didnt come out last year because wed prob be stuck with him

Bill, cocoajoe, hate to nitpick but certainly Odrick can start at DT on most teams too but problem is we have him playing an edge rush position. Much the same as asking Mike Pouncey to play LT. Doesn't mean he isn't a good player, just in the wrong spot.

Move Tanny to WR or trade him for a 3rd rd pk if we can.
