Three quarterback charts to chew on

Three quarterbacks. All making the first nine NFL starts. That's what you'll find below.

It is the first nine NFL career starts for Dan Marino, Chad Henne and Ryan Tannehill. In other words, you have the start of a Hall of Fame career, the start of a franchise quarterback bust career, and a hopeful future franchise quarterback career.

What do the charts below tell you?

I'm not going to editorialize today. I don't want to color the converation or lead in any direction. It's up to you to do that.

I'm going to let you make your own judgments and pour them into the comments section.

This is how it breaks down:

ARMANO ,IS THE BEST WRITER IN SOUTH FL ....

IF YOU GIVE TANNEHILL TIME ,HE WILL OVER TAKE HENNE IN THE LOSS COLUMN .

Victor, from the last blog.

If you're telling me that we don't have a Larry Zonza I think that EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT! However, we NEED QUICK AN OFENSIVE LINE IMPROVEMENT & I FEEL THAT THE BODIES ARE THERE, JUST NOT YET WORKING IN TUNE! But I'm sure that Joe Philbin will COREECT THAT TOO!... Just saying...

Yeah, I agree......I think.
Lane got crushed on that 3rd and 1 early. But if you noticed, Jerry, Martin and Fasano ALL THREE got driven back two yards by the time Tannehill handed the ball to Lane.
It has nothing to do with needing Lousaka Polite. The "Zonk" himself would have had trouble with the way the line got schooled on that particular play.

It tells me it's too early to know anything. Tannehill must do more in the red zone though. Team is scoring well but he isn't throwing enough TDs to make the defenses respect him there.

Beerphin,

In regards to the benching of Bush.

I think it got blown out of proportion a bit too because of the way the game went downhill so fast.

Had we come back and been in the game and Reggie returns ANYTIME, it would be non issue. Especially if we had won.

I think the earlier blog about Tannehill being untouchable and Reggie not was ludicris. Just a "Certain Someone" trying to stir the pot.

The total breakdown and blowout magnified everything.

What piece stands out the most? TD-to-INT ratio, no doubt. If Tannehill improves, he can be Fins savior. If not, he'll join Henne and many others...

OUR TEAM IS DOOMED ,AS LONG AS WE RUNS AS A GARAGE .....

IRELAND MAKES MOVES TO SECURE HIS JOB .

MOVING MARSHALL AND DAVIS ARE 2 BIG MISTAKES ...

It tells me that Tannehill is going to probably be a lot closer to Henne than Marino.

Excellent charts, Mando. Great idea.

OUR GARAGE MANAGER DIDN'T SUPPORT MOORE ,HE THOUGHT TANNEHILL WILL BE IT .IT TURNS OUT ,THE FINS WILL HAVE TO SIGN MOORE TO A BIG CONTRACT,,,,,,

Wasn't Henne in his second year and RT is a rookie? Yep, thought so. Dumb, dumb, dumb article. Comparing RT to Marino is stupid too. Compare him to contemporaries not two Dolphins QB's from the past. They have nothing to do with each other.

Dumb, dumb, dumb article. Good thing it is a short week.

The team is scoring well?

Who said that?

The Dolphins are 25th in the NFL in scoring. They're averaging 19.2 PPG. Thats less than the freaken Jets!!!

That's less than last year when they averaged only 20.6 ppg. Did the team score well last year?

Geez!

Mark,

Yep! Too early to draw any inference or conclusion in any respect.

The one thing that came to mind while looking at the charts was this: Tannehill hasn't done anything that would lead you believe that he can't/won't be a productive NFL calibre QB.

PS: Thanks for the charts Armando. It is very interesting to look at.

I was unfortunate enough to witness the pounding in person.Nobody open...Offensive line got throttled. Enough side to side BS. We need to go north and south.

Very interesting comparison.

Obviously, anyone annointing Tannehill at this point is an idiot. We have no clue if this kid is going to become the savior or just another guy.

The people in Carolina thought Cam Newton would be the savior and he's playing terrible. And Newton was better as a rookie with only 14 college starts than Tannehill has been after 19 college starts.

So back off the Tannehill savior syndrome. Let it play out.

Tannehill is worse then Henne was. Thanks Ireland.

Fin Fans have the patience of a 2 year old.

Cant win when Tannehill cant move the ball.

At least Henne wasnt a 1st rd pick.

Mando, you can also use a similar idea to compare Philbin to his rookie coach predecessors (sp?).

I believe Sparano was better after nine games than Philbin is now. I know it'll be that way by the end of this season because Philbin ain't winning the division or 11 games.

So people saying Philbin is the answer ... hahahaha. We'll have to wait and see because you cannot draw any guarantees based on what we've seen.

Patience?? its been 40 YEARS since a SB win. 15 YEARS since a playoff win. 4th CONSECUTIVE LOSING SEASON!

PATIENCE IS FOR LOSERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

It shows Tannehill passing wise is as good as Marino was in his first 9 starts.. Needs to work on the TD/INT but that will come.
Give the kid time guys..

IS IT TIME TO FIRE OUR GARAGE MANAGER YET ?

DOES FL STILL COUNTING THE VOTES FROM LAST ELECTION ??

WHERE'S KRIS ?

THE 11-5 FAN ,,,,,

Can u imagine if we gave up on Henne after 9 games?

C'Mon Man. You've been screaming from the Kiddie Kat Table for 8 straight hours and no ones taken the bait.

They got your number, give it up.

Sit Down, Shut Up and Eat your Veggies!

IS IT TIME TO FIRE OUR GARAGE MANAGER YET ????????

IS IT TIME TO FIRE SHERMAN WHO PUSHED FOR THE RELEASE OF MARSHALL ????

IS IT TIME YET TO PAN ODIN FROM POSTING ?

Tannehill is FAR WORSE then Henne. YIKES!!

ODIN HAS SENT LOVE LETTERS TO IRELAND IN LAST FEW WEEKS ,THINKING HE' ON THE WINNING WAGON ..........

ODIN HAS NO SHAME .....

I HAVE THE RIGHT TO WRITE WHATEVER I SEE FIT WITH MY BELIEVES RE OUR FINS....

AND ODIN HAS EVERY RIGHT TO WRITE ALL THE LOVE LETTERS TO IRELAND AS HE SEES FIT...........

Frank, they are scoring well when in the red zone I should've wrote.

They were 13th in the league in red zone offensive efficiency entering this week. They need to move the ball more eften but when they do, they usually score well.

Odin, it is too early to tell because if you look at the charts, you'll see that Henne's numbers are not that disimilar from marinos in some respects. You don't judge a qb in year one but after two ro three years of starting. Right now you just look for signs and flashes.

And so far, we are TBD.

Most impressive stat of course was Marino's 17 TDs. Of course, it was Dan Marino.

It is so unfair to compare Dan the man with Tan the man. Marino is the greatest QB of all time. When he started he walked into a post SB team with a great offensive line, Armando, Come On Man you know that. Henne was a robot who could not move, Tannehill is going to be a good QB. Anyone who claims to be a Dolphins fan should see that. He is athletic, can run and make a the throws, when is the last time we can say that. Its been a long time. Lay off Ireland he has made some good moves, if you don't like it pull for the Jets!!!!!!

Jeff Ireland supports Look at the last five years. Parcells and Ireland picked the player personal, results are 4 straight losing seasons please dont post the same song and dance that Ireland didn't get control of team until Parcells rob the Phins blind and skip town, his finger prints are still left on the crime seen! It just the last two years only his finger prints are on the crime seen! LOL.
its a crime shame what Ji done to this team.
Fire the bum!

Nothing personal there, Mark. I did not even name you by name but I have to say all all the mumbo jumbo about who well they're doing in the red zone is bs to me when the fact is they're not scoring enough points. Period.

If the team has GREAT red zone scoring but overall is 20th in the NFL scoring like the Dolphins are, I don't get a thrill up my leg about red zone scoring.

It's like winning a race against caterpillars. You gotta think bigger.

The bigger issue is how many points we score overall. Points overall is what wins or loses games not redzone success.

THE TUNA WAS FORCED OUT OF TOWN..

LIKE MARSHALL
LIKE DAVIS
AND REMAINS THE FASANOS,THE BESS,THE DANSBY OF THIS WORLD.......

Tan the man! How about Tan the goat!
Only one QB that deserves to be call the man for the dolphins and that is Dan the Man
Marino!

Marino had Clayton,Duper, and Nat Moore.Tannehill has Bess ,Hartline and ??????.

Putting these charts up now after yesterday's game is suggesting even Henne is better than THill, we all know that's not the case............

Does THill have Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown in his prime in the back field? No.

Does THill have a better completion % and more yards than Henne? Yes...... & that's with THill missing practically one whole game because of injury.......
Brings me to my next point, was Henne injured in his 7th start like THill was???

Was the overall team more talented during Henne's 1st 9 starts?? Yes.....

Needless to say, these charts are more subjective than actual statistical evaluation of pure talent and potential.

Henne never had "it", THill does.

Let's re-evaluate week 17......

The o line got their butts handed to them. They were getting beat up on every play!!!

Frank, no worries, I don't feel picked. I didn't say they were great in the red zone, just good. Fact is the top 10 teams in red zone efficiency have a .607 win percentage so the fact that the kid is showing smarts and execution in that aspect is a positive sign.

But the other part of the equation is just what you said, just not moving the ball enough so even though we've been efficient, we need more volume. Some of that will come when we get better talent and hopefully more of it comes when the kid matures.

Right now we have an incomplete puzzle, we need more data, more reps, more time, and more talent acquisition. Fact is this team hasn't used higher than a 3rd round pick on a WR or TE in five years. Considering we didn't have much to start with there, it all speaks to a weak supporting cast. It's not a total excuse but jsut part of it. The player needs to improve and the talent needs to improve.

Thus my first comment read TBD (to be determined) we just don't know enough yet.

The revisionist history of soome comments here is astounding.

Suddenly the Dolphins had a ton of talent in 2009 and have none today. Really?

So Ted Ginn and Greg Camarillo were better than Brian Hartline and Davone Bess?

Jake Grove or Joe Berger were better than Mike Pouncey?

Justin "arm in sling" smiley was better than Incognito?

Donald Thomas at RG better than John Jerry?

Give it a rest, fellas.

Tannehill has as much talent to work with as Henne did. Jake is obviously diminished but I'll take this passing game talent over 2009.

The comparison is fair.

Thanks, Mando.

Aloco the garage mgr is actually a scout that was hired by the infamous little tuna(thief)he has been hired and has learned to be a GM on the job.Dont you think its pretty good work if you can get it especially a general managers salary.I dont think when the little tuna hired him he was getting paid as much the tuna took most of the loot himself when he hired sporano and ireland.

KING.... TUNA WAS HIRED TO GIVE THE FINS CREDIBILITY ,THE EX OWNER HIRED HIM TO SELL THE TEAM TO ROSS ,THE SAME HAPPENED WITH PATS ,WHEN THE EX OWNERS SOLD THE TEAM TO KRAFT QHILE THE TUNA WAS AT THE HELM ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,''

THE TUNA ONE GREAT COACH,WE SHOULD HAVE HIM FINISH THE JOB,NOT FORCING HIM OUT,,,,,,,,,

YUNA DESERVED ALL THE MONEY HE GOT...

WHILE THE TTUNA

Aloco you probably know the tuna has lost his right to be a fish now they call him Dollar Bill Parcells,I doubt he ever gets another job in the NFL.He can always be a talking head on television before the games a lot of former coaches and players have gone that route.I know the money is good and they arent judged by their wins and losses.

IS IT TIME TO FIRE OUR GARAGE MANAGER YET ????????
IS IT TIME TO FIRE SHERMAN WHO PUSHED FOR THE RELEASE OF MARSHALL ????

IS IT TIME YET TO PAN ODIN FROM POSTING ?
Posted by: ALoco | November 12, 2012 at 04:11 PM

Oh No! Not Dat!

Don't Pan Me Bro!

KING........THE UNA TOOK THE PATS TO THE SB,THEN HE WAS FORCED OUT BY KRFT ,HE TOOK THE FINS TO THE PLAYOFFS,THEN THEY FORCED HIM OUT AGAIN,THE SHOULD HAVE HIM FINISH QHAT HE STARTED..............

Aloco bill Parcells was an impact coach in his era,and that was when he won TWO superbowls with the Giants. After that he was going by reputation but never having the same success.

MONEY TALK..........

TUNA IN 4 YEARS .......12 MILLION .....4 YEARS,,,TOOK US TO THE PLAYOFFS.

DANSBY IN 4 YEARS....... 47 MILLIONS .........4 YEARS,,,,THE CELLAR,,,,,,,,,,,

Kinda cherry picking the data. How come Mondo didn't do this after 8 games? If he did, Tannehill would have a 320 yard lead on Henne, a 5:6 TD to INT ratio vs Henne's 7:5 and a 4-4 record vs. Henne's 5-3. Henne finished the rest of that year with a 3:9 TD to INT ratio. Let's give the kid atleast another year to prove where he belongs between Marino and Henne.

Plus Tannehill is a rook vs. Henne being in his second year. Tannehill started 19 games in college, Henne started 45. Henne had been groomed by Coach on the field Chad Pennington. Pretty different scenarios if you ask me.

As far as Huizingas hiring of Parcells it was the same MO huizinga took with the Dolphins for years. He would hire a head coach and pay him well and that was how he would give the fans hope that things would change.Remember Saban,Johnson etc.He knew he was selling the team probably a decade before he sold it,and it was one of the worse decades in the history of the franchise.

KING...ARE YOU SAYING THAT WHEN HE TOOK THE PATS TO THE SUPER BPWL AND SET THE TEAM TO WIN 3 RINGS IN 4 YEARS,THAT WAS BY ACCIDENT ,,,,

OR WHEN HE TOOK THE COWBOYS TO THE PLAYOFFS,TO BE DASHED BY THE PLAY OF THEIR QB WAS ALSP AN ACCIDENT ?

AND ODIN HAS EVERY RIGHT TO WRITE ALL THE LOVE LETTERS TO IRELAND AS HE SEES FIT...........

Posted by: ALoco | November 12, 2012 at 04:17 PM

If "Passive/Agressive" was an art form, you'd be a Picasso.

**BUT**..................It's **NOT*.

SO SEET DOWN AND EET YOU VEGAHTABLES

The tuna is washed up in todays NFL he is a throwback to another era.

Your data shows me that Marino had a lot better team around him.

Looking at it from Bill Parcells view he closed out his career by fleecing the Dolphin franchise for 14 million and drafting an offensive lineman with the first pick in the draft who will now have to be franchised if the dolphins want to keep him.

It tells me that Tannehill needs more weapons. The only stat he isn't ahead in are td passes and low and behold check out the roster around him. No running game like Henne had, no wr's or tes like Marino had, and he's playing on a rebuilding team, not a team who is/was established with Shula,,and to a lesser degree Sparano was pretty steady (steadily sucking) by the time Henne started.

Get the kid some weapons to use. Just like every other f*&^ing young qb gets in the league. How many young QBs is this organization going to treat like Marino? He didn't need a lot and STILL was given weapons. He is the exception, not the rule. Young qbs need play makers. Quick, name all of Miami's offensive playmakers. Exactly,,,,,,,,,,,zilch.

Not one play maker at the skilled positions on the team. They were making the same comparison with Sanchez yesterday and he's an established vet. They were saying how it's not his fault because he has no play makers. Well how about the kid who has only started 9 games?

4 years after the 1-15 debacle and we still have no play makers at the skill positions. The one constant through it all,,,,,,,,,,,Jeff Ireland.

Ireland apologists need to see the big picture here. Ireland is horrible at evaluating talent at RB,TE, and especially WIDE RECEIVER. And guess what we will be in the market for next off season and draft?

1001 excuses for why Tannehill stinks. LOL

KING...BUT THE TUNA CONTRACT HAS A LANGUAGE TO GIVE TUNA THE FULL 12 MILLION IN THE CASE OF SELLING THE TEAM BEFORE THE 4 YEARS......

THEY BOTH AGREED TO THAT B/C IT BENFIT THE EX OWNER MORE,,,,BTW,ROSS DIDN'T PAY THAT 12 MILLION ,THE EX OWNER DID..
