Dolphins check in on Routt but signing not likely

The Dolphins have made an inquiry with the agent for cornerback Stanford Routt, NFL sources are telling me. But ...

The Dolphins are not interested at this time.

The team reserves the right to change its mind in the future. Things can change with player injuries and level of play, etc. But the club has no plans to sign Routt any time soon.

So there's that.

Routt is an interesting player because he has so much potential and the Raiders and Chiefs have paid handsomely for that potential. But both have been disappointed with him to the extent they both cut him.

The Raiders drafted Routt in the second round of the 2005 draft after he ran a 4.27 at the scouting combine. In February of 2011 he signed a three-year contract that included $20 million in guarantees over the first two years.

But Routt didn't last with the team into that second year. After starting 15 games in 2011, he was released after a season in which he didn't play up to his price tag.

Seeing an opportunity, the Chiefs last February signed Routt to a three-year deal, this one worth $19.6 million. But the Chiefs stink and Routt was apparently not fitting in well with the defensive scheme. So, yes, he was cut November 5.

Routt, I'm told, is best suited for man press technique. He apparently struggles to learn zone concepts and sometimes has blown coverages on calls.

Having said that, he's out there. The Dolphins checked in on his status because Richard Marshall is on injured reserve and they just gave up 433 yards passing to the Colts.

But nothing is going to happen with him here any time soon.

Isnt it gay that Jake Long have the goldie locks looks? For God sake get a haircut you hippie! Wonder why his play have regressed..

Sign Routte! He cant be any worse than Marshall

Mistake not to sign this guy. If he's no good and making mistakes you sit him on the bench. Geez, it took a month to get Gaffney on the field. Are you saying this guy is worse than what we currently have. Who cares about the money. Get him on the team and protect against future injuries. I wouldn't have played well for Oakland or KC either. Two of the worst franchises in the league right now. Get him on the team and let him compete for a spot. What's the problem with that? Don't get this team's thinking sometimes.

Jake did get a haircut. C'mon Guy!
---------------------------------------------------------

On Routt.

For the Rest of the Season Wouldn't hurt! We Do Need Help! But he has Character Issue's! Plus, I would Rather See what Carroll and Wilson have for the Rest of the Year!

That Way we KNOW! HOW BAD IS THE CB!! PROBLEM!!! Do We NEED JUST 1? Or 2? Or 3?!!!!! Might as well let the Young Guys Play!

I Guess Carroll is Starting the Rest of the Season!

Here's how those on the outside (without bias) see our team:

Notable draft picks: QB Ryan Tannehill, RT Jonathan Martin, DE Olivier Vernon, RB Lamar Miller

Analysis: Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland had another stellar draft class, and it’s a major reason Miami is in contention. He landed a franchise quarterback in Tannehill, which are always bonus points. Martin has started every game at right tackle and is holding his own. He will only improve. Vernon has been a terror on special teams and off the bench. He already has 2.5 sacks, two blocked field goals and a punt block recovered for a touchdown. Miller is the third running back but has contributed in spot duty. He averages 5.5 yards per carry. You can’t ask for more from a rookie class.

Grade: A

Guess the rest of the league will beg to differ with the haters on this blog (about the direction/quality of the team and management).

Dashi,

He's 29. How is that old? I've already heard you say you want TWO CBs in the draft, so that tells me you're not happy with the guys we currently have. Something wrong with adding to our depth? Nobody is saying just hand him the job. He earns his playing time.

But no, let's just keep guys like Will Yeatman and Mastrud on the team, who for the life of me I can't figure out what these guys do.

sign and trade 4 a few 6's and 7's.

When bill connors, who's in KC and closer to the action than us, is saying 'sign this guy', that confirms that we need to sign this guy. There aren't a lot of guys bill likes and I would think someone coming off a 1-7 team would get his criticism. Jeff Ireland, if you happen to show up here to day, please get this done ASAP, before he goes and helps some other team.

home. did ya hear that ss was out all nite w/ vd ^ @ indy and that's y he played like chit.?.
lol

Phins need to take advantage of Titans weak rush defense.
http://phinsnews.com/need-to-establish-the-run-game/

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE TIRED OF THE LOSING! HELP MAKE A CHANGE!

givin' irecorn all of these pix is like givin'
al-qaeda nukes.
lol

the big fat slow d can't take any mo 3'n outs from rt.

They are not signing Routt unless forced due to injury. They just traded him back when his name was Vontae Davis. Seriously,,,,it's the same guy.

Yo Jeffy.......Is you momma a hooka?

How does Ross not fire a GM that curses out his paying customers?

Craig M....

Do you want to sign the BRANDO MARSHALL of defense....please....

You love choir boy type players...and we have a coach who wants them as well....

This move is in keeping with the PHILBIN PHILOSPHY.....

Dullfins vs. Titans? As boring as it gets.

Craig read Armando's write up again. Tell me this guy isn't the same exact player as Vontae who was just cut. Good in press, bad in zone, maturity issues, inconsistency, etc. It's the same player yet older with less upside. I just don't see why Coyle and Philbin would want that back on the team.

Sorry, not cut, traded.

Then again who even knows if that's Craig, someone has been using his sign in and pretending to be him. On that note, I'm out.

Amazing how these fans want cast offs just because this guy was fast and taken in the second round. They screamed for Gaffney and how's that workin out. weeks to get on the field and two big drops (the lastest coming at the end of the game last week). At this point I trust the coaches and ireland more than the knuckleheads on this blog.

But first Craig,,if that's you, are you saying we should trust a Chiefs fans assesment on whether or not a player from his team would be a good fit on ours? Have you read some of the fan ideas in here?! He is suggesting we sign Vontae back at an older age. Doesn't seem he is aware of what he is saying.

I can't think of any players that we should have signed but didn't THIS offseason or beginning of the season that have worked well for other teams.

Haven't heard a thing from: Winslow, Cooley, Braylon Edwards, TO, Moss, Burress

Seems the only guy not to implode (yet) is B Marshall. Davis has been garbage/injured for the Colts to the point that we may lose our conditional 6th round pick in his deal.

Not to praise Ireland, still not convinced he's a good GM, but he is known for making the correct NON-moves

(ie: Palmer, Orton, arguably RGIII, Pierre Garcon; not drafting: Ingram > Pouncey)
And at least he hasn't made a dumb 1st round draft pick like Ted Ginn (9) or Jason Allen (12)

Only whiff was Manning who just didn't want to come here, wasn't our choice

DC Toolfan strikes again.

Having said that, he's out there. The Dolphins checked in on his status because Richard Marshall is on injured reserve and they just gave up 433 yards passing to the Colts.

Mando,

Richard Marshall has missed the last 4 games & for 3 of them (Bengals, Rams, & Jets) the CB's played well. So give Smith Carroll some credit.

NFL Network showed the game on 'Rewind' yesterday & although Carroll, Smith, & Wilson were all atrocious in coverage, their tackling was equally as terrible. Jones played extremely well again & it seemed like Clemons had to make about 10 tackles after the CB's missed.

I don't necessarily recommend that people watch the 'Rewind' b/c it may make you physically ill BUT you can clearly see the problems across the board on defense;

1) Our defense gave Luck too much time to survey the field. Luck made two plays in the 2nd half where he was falling to the ground & made throws that looked like Favre in his prime.

2) Bad tackling across the board allowed the Colts to sustain drives that should have resulted in punts. Yes Luck played well but the shoddy tackling continued to give him chance after chance.

3) The run defense broke down as the game wore on. This was the most surprising b/c the run defense has been outstanding this year. Again this was just a byproduct of bad tackling.

4) CB's were playing WAY OFF the receivers & didn't make any notable plays on the ball. This includes a few times when we had double coverage (like the Hilton TD where Luck just lobbed it up into the end zone) which was by far the most pathetic thing that stood out. The dropped INT by Smith was really bad at a REALLY bad time in the game but the mistakes in double coverage were worse IMO.

Do it now!!!

dolffnman, we need more castoffs! lol

Now Mando is giving credit to Stephen Ross for being a good owner??? Interesting....I'd say Philbin is saving both Ross' & Ireland's a@@es in the eyes of the media.

I really don't give a sh#t that Mike Smith is 8-0. The Falcons have been a pretty good team (can't win a playoff game) since they drafted Matt Ryan. I can't even imagine what Tannehill would look like with the type of talent (Roddy White, Julio Jones, Gonzlez, etc.) Ryan has. The real Coach of the year HAS to be Joe Philbin. This team was considered a joke by everyone who covers the NFL & was completely written off this year. NO ONE had this team starting the season at 4-4.

I love when everyone just talks around the fool and doesn't respond to his moronic posts. It's like he's yelling from the childrens table while the adults talk shop. Good stuff.

Clearly this poster claiming to be CRAIG M....is NOT CRAIG M.....

Get a life @ 12:12....and all other time stamps respectively....

what a loser you are....did it feel good to have people responding to your post as you IMPOSTERED another poster....will you remember this day forever....

You losers know NO BOUNDS....

Armando says "define troll".....

I looked it up Armando....there is a picture of a guy...who has chipmunk cheeks and for SOME REASON is wearing a black POLO shirt with the TOP BUTTON..buttoned....right next to the word troll in the dictionary.....

I think I have seen that picture somewhere before....

but were....

OK.

Let me say it again!

I "Dashi" Believe We Only need 1 More Good CB!

NOW THIS DOES NOT MEAN DASHI THINKS CB OR THE SECONDARY IS OUR BIGGEST NEED! LB'S ARE!!!!

AGAIN! DASHI WOULD RATHER SEE WHAT WE HAVE IN CARROLL AND J.WILSON!!! THAN SIGN SOMEBODY ELSE!!! Specially after PRE-SEASON! That Player would not Know all his Assignments! HE IS MORE A LIABILITY THAN A PLUS!

Hasn't Dashi Been Lobbying!!! FOR N.CARROLL AS A STARTER!! The Last Couple Weeks? Yes, Correct!

What I have been Saying All Along!!! IS!! Let's See If Carroll can be a Starting CB! OR if he is just a Nickelback or #3! TIL WE GET THAT 1 CB!!

Or WHAT ABOUT IF COYLE FEELS!! CARROLL AND WILSON!!! DON'T CUT IT!! AND HE HAS A HIGHER STANDARD! And We Need 2 Cb's! Not Just 1!!!

NOW DOES THAT MEAN GET RID OF S.SMITH?

NO!! BECAUSE AT NO POINT!! HAS DASHI EVER SAID DON'T RESIGN HIM!!

NOW HOW ABOUT IF CARROLL SHOWS THAT HE CAN HOLD HIS OWN!! AND WILSON ALSO PROVES TO BE A OK NICKEL!

YET, CLEMONS! STILL SUCKS!! FS IS A BIGGER HOLE THAN CB!!

NOTICE TEAMS USUALLY RELEASE WR'S AND CB'S LIKE NOTHING DURING THE SEASON! IT IS A POSITION THAT PEOPLE CAN COME OUT OF NOWHERE!! AND PLAY!

YET, LINEBACKERS AND SAFETY'S DON'T GET RELEASED AS OFTEN! NEITHER DO QB'S! OR LINEMEN!

NAME 1 UNDRAFTED LB THAT WAS ANY GOOD?

REMEMBER ZACK IS ONE OF THE GREATEST 5TH ROUND PICKS EVER!

DANSBY, BURNETT AND MISI WERE ALL 2ND ROUND PICKS!

WHY NOT GET SOME 1ST ROUND LINEBACKERS! TRUST ME IT WILL MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE!

IT'S LIKE INVESTING IN THE LINE'S! WE NEED TO BUILD THE 2ND LEVEL NOW!! START WITH TE'O!! Special MLB!

U CAN KEEP DANSBY 1 MORE YEAR(As a OLB)! Then THE NEXT YEAR GET ANOTHER IMPACT LB! A PASS RUSHING OLB!! A YOUNG LT! OR A Aldon Smith Type! Guys that make Plays! Behind the Line!!

OUR LB'S MAKE NO PLAYS BEHIND THE LINE! OR AFTER THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE!

"Dolphins claimed CB Brandon McDonald off waivers from Tampa Bay.
Miami signed the journeyman CB after placing Richard Marshall on injured reserve. McDonald has 21 total tackles and an interception in six games for the Buccaneers, but was waived yesterday. He's currently ranked as the No. 91 cornerback for the season at Pro Football Focus. "

I guess it's possible we can still sign Routt who I recall being a damn good CB when he played for the Raiders. Very surprising to see the Chiefs cut him after paying him a lot of money instead of disciplining him in house...

we're an 8-8 team with or without him. wait this year out and draft our CB in 2013. Get rid of smith as well. He's only playing ok this year because it's a contract year. He'll be the same ole smith after he gets his contract.
neither smith nor long are going to be worth the money they'll get elsewhere. cut them loose.

If I were the GM and a fan came to me and told me to fire myself I would have said a few more choice words than calling him an A s s. People think they can say whatever they want to people and no recourse will happen bc they bought their product.

Boulder
I disagree on Smith, I think Coyle who is known for DEVELOPING DB's will be good for him and Smith will continue to grow. A 6'3 corner is needed when the receivers in the league are going for 6'5 receivers. If we sign him at a reasonable price or if there isnt someone out there better than him, I say keep him..

If your a GM of a professional Football team....

and a FAN (without profanity)...tells you to "fire yourself"...
and your SO sensitive that you feel the need to respond.....

well...it might be time for you to find a new line of work....

The Chiefs have bbe FAR WORSE than us...for FAR LONGER.....

the LAST thin we need is some Chiefs GARBAGE.....

Stay the course Joe....stick to your principals....

"Interesting player"? We have a team full of interesting players. We need more beasts

Signing players that other teams have released is not quite a prognostication as drafting players but I would venture to say that most players picked up this way are more fill-ins than anything else they will not become starters. To think that the Dolphins are smarter than all the other teams in accessing this particular player is probably wrong more than half the time.

I guess a fan having the arrogance to tell him to fire himself would be the same as slapping me in the face.
Also, I dont know and i dont know if you know how the fan said it. More than likely the fan had a few beers at the time and may have said it somewhat aggresively or he may have whispered it in his ear.

"I can't think of any players that we should have signed but didn't THIS offseason or beginning of the season that have worked well for other teams.

MD20,

I agree with EVERYTHING you said but I don't think Manning was a whiff. In fact it was REALLY a blessing in disguise for us. Peyton has MAYBE three good years left & Tannehill is just scratching the surface. We didn't have the cap space so I really don't understand Ross' & Ireland's interest in even meeting with him.

One of the things that stood out in watching the game on NFL Network's 'Rewind' was how well Tannehill played. There were two series in particular--one where we settled for a FG in the 2nd half after we got down to the 10 yard line & the last drive after we got to the 50 where the play calling &/or execution wasn't sharp. But other than that Tannehill was every bit as good Luck in that game(the tape doesn't lie so watch it for yourself) & that's w/o a TE making plays or 3rd option at WR.

Gaffney dropped a pass on that series where we settled for a FG that he should have had.

long = puxxy whipped, his wife is suxing him dry.
he don't care 'bout foosball no mo.
long = j.russell.

Phins78 and Kris,

Yeah the impostors/trolls are out in full force the last couple of days. Must mean they sense we have a win coming up and they want to get all the comments on while they still can.

Phins78, I'm not saying we sign this guy and start him. I'm pretty comfortable with Smith and Nolan right now (well at least as comfortable as I can be right now). What I'm saying is add this guy for depth purposes. He doesn't get to play unless he's earned the time or can show the effort and that he gets it. I look at the team and since the start of the year we're down Marshall and Davis. We've replaced them with MacDonald and McCann. Do you guys feel we've strengthened ourselves in that trade-off? Do you feel secondary was a position of strength before the season started? I can answer NO to both of those statements.

Kris, 'he's the Marshall of the defence'? No, he's not, because he doesn't have a $50 million pricetag around his neck. Didn't you just say this morning that you don't know this guy, Kris? So now you're saying he's Marshall? How does that work? He was a good athlete coming out of College, can run like the wind and he's been in the league a few years. Are we saying this guy is who is because he's played for two of the worst teams in the NFL. Would you agree that both of these organizations have made mistake after mistake in personnel? (does the Carson Palmer trade ring a bell?). For the pro-rated minimum, this guy is worth the risk.

Who gives a flying turd if Sean Smith is 6.3
He proved he cannot cover a 5.8 WR.
or a big TE or big WR.
Jets Holmes had 150 yards on smith.
Smith sucks always has, always will.

Let me put it another way, how many guys on here would have been completely comfortable with Nolan Carroll as one of our starting corners for half a season? Carroll has stepped up big but anything wrong with having some insurance should he falter or get hurt? Are we trying for the playoffs or are we going through the motions?

The Dolphins and their GM and coaches are in a business that demands results they are always in danger of losing their job because of the teams performance.Ross on the otherhand is the owner he controls the team all you dolphins should know this after the two decades of mediocre control by Wayne Huizinga. If this franchise is to be on top again it wont happen overnight.

MattyB.,

I think it depends on if he bounces back. He was playing well prior to that game.

The same is true for Jake Long too. What I think is interesting is Adam Beasley has an article that mentions that he could go for as much as $15 Million per year in FA. If that's the case....I can't help but think Mario Williams. Big name & big talent but irreplaceable??? The Texans didn't think so & it paid off. Drafting a guy like JJ Watt the year before helps too....

Really he shut down Fitzgerald, He shut down AJ Green for the most part, Andre Johnson didnt have a huge day, outside of the Colts and the Jets game hes been good this year.. So Dude please look at the whole picture this year not just two games you decided to use to support your point

WHRBs,

Who the Hell is Adam Beasley? Where does he come up with a figure of $15 million for Long when Thomas is making $10 million and he's regarded by most people as the best LT in the game. I already mentioned that the franchise tag right now for this year is $9.4 million and the expectation is that that will fo down. No way the Dolphins let Long hit FA and just walking away when they can franchise him for around $9mil.

WHRBs, I agree Manning is more of a blessing because if we had Manning we wouldn't have a franchise QB. Sure we may he 7-1 instead of 4-4 and playoff bound but whenanning deteriorates we would be back to where we were in 09 after the magical Pennington season. At least now we deal with the bumps and sing the praises for our team within 3 years. If we get 1 WR and 1 CB/FS/SS we will be fine. Resign Starks and Hartline for the right money (and unfortunately we may need to resign Smith too, though his Miami career doesn't thrill me he's always made me scratch my head....never been able to maximize his potential)

People were going crazy saying we didn't have a team, a legit roster. Every troll was saying they'd trade our roster for just about every other roster in the league and I laughed and argued how our roster is much better than a bunch, it's just our QB play. Seems that's coming out now and appears a lot more accurate. Big picture/perspective is a wonderful thing.

I say go with what we've got on the roster; win, lose, or draw. And, use all of those picks that Ireland got in the next draft. Double up on defensive backs and wide receivers.

Posted by: We Have RB's | November 08, 2012 at 12:48 PM

This next game shows if SS has that forget factor or uses how he got abused last game as motivation. If he can bounce back and start being consistent and use what Coyle has taught him then keep him for the right price. Ireland has a knack for doing that.
If Long is going to require 15 million a year, let him walk. I could see him giving the Fins a discount because they took care of him in his first contract but if not and we cant get him for the right price.. good luck to you..

I never worry about $ anymore. I'm alone now.

Hennehill = another Ireland bust

A lot of fans here buy into the media hype. I remember when everyone thought our team was garbage (media influence) and Matt Barkley was the next big thing (media influence). No one wants Barkley anymore and no one legitimately thinks our team is garbage (garbage = Jaguars, Jests, Chiefs -- only a troll would think we're a bad team). Some people need to see things and form their own opinions and stop letting the media do it for them. Barkley isn't even a serious Heisman Trophy consideration anymore and may not even be the best QB to come out of this upcoming draft.

"Let me put it another way, how many guys on here would have been completely comfortable with Nolan Carroll as one of our starting corners for half a season? Carroll has stepped up big but anything wrong with having some insurance should he falter or get hurt? Are we trying for the playoffs or are we going through the motions?"

Craig,

It comes down to money & fit. Maybe he'd rather play for another team. You know all this. I trust the coaching staff. Up until the Colts game Coyle has been a miracle worker with our secondary.

Do we need depth at CB??? Absolutely which is why we just signed Brandon McDonald.

DC DOLPHIN

When you put information up and you copy and paste you at least need to give credit where it is due. James Walker form ESPN would appreciate it

WHRBs, I agree we should keep Smith and Long at "reasonable price" but I think they will command top 5 money in their respective positions. Neither of them are playing top 5 right now. But I bet another team will pay them that kind of money. If that's the case I say let them both walk.

matty,

I'm fully expecting that Smith bouncing back this week. But I'd say we shouldn't read into that too much. Big difference between a just back from injury Locker and Andrew Luck. What's going to be the true test for me is how Smith performs playing opposite Tom Brady. That will clinch it for me.
