Dolphins check in on Routt but signing not likely

The Dolphins have made an inquiry with the agent for cornerback Stanford Routt, NFL sources are telling me. But ...

The Dolphins are not interested at this time.

The team reserves the right to change its mind in the future. Things can change with player injuries and level of play, etc. But the club has no plans to sign Routt any time soon.

So there's that.

Routt is an interesting player because he has so much potential and the Raiders and Chiefs have paid handsomely for that potential. But both have been disappointed with him to the extent they both cut him.

The Raiders drafted Routt in the second round of the 2005 draft after he ran a 4.27 at the scouting combine. In February of 2011 he signed a three-year contract that included $20 million in guarantees over the first two years.

But Routt didn't last with the team into that second year. After starting 15 games in 2011, he was released after a season in which he didn't play up to his price tag.

Seeing an opportunity, the Chiefs last February signed Routt to a three-year deal, this one worth $19.6 million. But the Chiefs stink and Routt was apparently not fitting in well with the defensive scheme. So, yes, he was cut November 5.

Routt, I'm told, is best suited for man press technique. He apparently struggles to learn zone concepts and sometimes has blown coverages on calls.

Having said that, he's out there. The Dolphins checked in on his status because Richard Marshall is on injured reserve and they just gave up 433 yards passing to the Colts.

But nothing is going to happen with him here any time soon.

Colts could easily lose to the...

Pats
Lions
and they still have to play the Texans twice....a Texans team that will be eager to put Luck in his place....after dealing with Manning since their inception....

Also the Bills might come to play that day....

Colts have @ least 4 more losses coming.....lose one they didn't expect to....and were back in the playoff picture....

If Indy makes the playoffs and our 2nd rd pick from them is in the 50's of the 2nd rd. We may just be better served using it as 1st rd trade up ammo.

But my ideal situation is we have a regular season short of making the playoffs and sitting no worse than the 12th-13th draft position. Then using the 2nd rd pick allows us to at least crack the top 10.

If we broke top 10 and a instant impact wr or corner wasnt there, and Manti T'eo was. I would definitely pull the trigger. I believ Manti T'eo will be an instant impact mlb for years to come barring injury.

kris,

I would love to see the Colts finish no higher than 7-9. But of course this means they have to win only 1 of thier remaining 6 games.

My only remaining interest in them is increasing that 2nd rd pick they owe us. Or I would care less how they finish. I have no particular like or dislike of them at present, except for the disappointment of losing to them.

No need to sign this bum from Oakland/KC.

We have Sean Smith and he is AWESOME!?!?!?!?!?!?

The Colts only significant win was over GB. But I believe it was more the case of GB looking past them than the Colts being that good.

I expect the Texan(twice) and Pats will fully expose them in upcoming games. The Texans have enough offense to win and enough defense to slow Luck down.

No way Luck can keep up with the scoring machine Brady crashes on top of him. Never will thier defense.

YG.....

The Colts have the Chiefs and the Titans on the schedule...so most likely they get to 8-8...and the Bills game could go either way...as inconsistent as the Bills are....

but the safe bet for the Colts IMO is 8-8....

I believe even the Jts have enough defenseto slow Luk down. They just dont have enugh fistpumps on offense to win the game. Indy 13 Jets 6.

Being REALISTIC with the FINS schedule....we have @ least 3 more losses on paper...maybe 4 or 5.....

The PATS twice...

The 49ers...

The Seahawks....

and one to the Bills....

Thats depressing to look @ it that way....

I'm going back to 11-5 Kris.....FINS...WORLD BEATERS.....

YG...

the jets ALREADY played the Colts....the jets BLEW them out...35-9 in WEEK 6.....

kris,

The Titans are a team I worry about. Theyre truly one of those "on any given day teams". Theyre truly Jeckyll-Hide and you never know which Titans team shows up.

Our upcoming Titans game worries me. The combination of the temptation to look past them and nt knowing which Texans team shows up causes me great concern. We arent yet nearly talented enough to come into that game on our A-game.

YG....

While I understood the "looking past" the Rams....and to a lesser extent the Colts (even tho Philbin was riding them in practice according to reports).....

This team is NO LONGER in a position to look past anybody....

Any more flat performance HAVE to be an indictment on the Coaching staff...

They need to figure out how to run the ball again....and then things will get back to normal....

kris,

Youre absolutely right. The Jets did thrash them. Thier remaining schedle s:

Pats
Bills
Lions
Titans
Texans
Chiefs
Texans

The biggest trap game remaing is the Chiefs. The Chiefs could easily be 1-14 coming into that game. Thier primary motivation for that game would be to play the spoiler. Which could easily happen if the Colts are caught looking past them.

The Colts are similar to us. Not yet talented enough to look pst any opponent.

Time to start rooting for teams to lose.....

1st up...

Colts
Broncos
Chargers...

Now we understand why Marshall was screaming at Henne. lol

Kris,

When I said we slightly looked past the Colts. It wasnt so much I think we grossly looked past them. Just that being on that 3 game win streak, I think some of the players thought we were a little better than what we actually are.

As a coaching staff, you can sometimes do everything possible in preparation, but you cant control what players are really feeling in thier heads. You can highly address it. But, once the players hit the playing field its out of your hands.

If we could have taken advantage of at least one of Luck's 3 mistakes. Or even two of the 3, then we win that game handily.

The 3 mistakes:

1. Dansby's pic 6 drop

2. Smith losing the ball in the light on the td. Luck threw into double-coverage. Thats always a no-no. No matter how it tursn out.

3. The pic Sean Smith dropped.

You don't have to root for the Chargers to lose, it'll come naturally.

kris,

Of the 3 teams you said we should root for to lose. Only the Colts are the one I'll root for to lose. That's because we own thier 2nd rd pick.

Man, we arent quite good enough yet to be shooting for playoffs. We're better served with draft position to become a much stronger team in the future. We've already went thru in 2008. The mostly why we are where we are today.

Even if we had proper cause, its futile to root against the Broncos. I have the Broncos penciled in for at least 11-5 with Peyton Manning at the controls. LOL

YG....

Agree @ 10:58....I think the players were reading their press clippings.....and the coaching can only effect that so much....

Broncos 2 toughest remaining games are against the Ravens and Chargers. Theyve already beaten the Chargers once 35-24. So it very possible for them to finish 12-4 with the toughest remaining game against the Ravens.

YG @ 11:02.....

I understand your thoughts...and why we shouldn't make the play-offs....but the FIN FAN in me won't allow me to agree with it....

I want to win NOW....I want to WIN LATER...and I want to win YESTERDAY if that were possible....

I trust Philbin to find us some true GEMS....and keep Ireland away from the Acorn tree.....

OK FINFANS

READY FOR THE POLL OF THE DAY?

WHO IS THE BETTER QB?

1)Chad Henne

2)Ryan Tannehill

3)Russel Wilson

4)Mark Sanchez

Yeah...

but if Rivers doesn't melt down on Monday night....the Chargers win that game by 10...even with the miraculous Manning comeback.....

but now....I guess I just became a Broncos fan....we need the Chargers to lose...

Its gonna be hard to know what we have with our team until DEC...thats when the MEAT of the schedule will be played.....and our METAL will be tested.....I want this team to be in the mix so they are giving there best....

Tanne...

Wilson...

The other 2 give my computer a virus if I even type their name....

Im looking for a Pats-Broncos afc championship game to decide who represents the afc in the sb.

Brady-Manning will easily be the best two qb's in the afc playoffs. I dont really like a Ray Lewis less Ravens team beating either. Nor the perrenial playoff chokers Texans beating either.

There are 7 sb appearances between Manning/Brady. After this season there will be 8. Just a matter if it will be Brady or Manning adding to his list of sb appearances.

Russel Wilson

What are the Dolphins contending for? Last place in the AFC? Theres 8,,,8 more games and if they play the Titans like they played against the Dolts, well, here we go back to ugly. The OL is looking more and more like the Ol of the last 3 yrs. Jake Long for some reason, cant seem to get out of his own way, he doesnt get in anyone elses way,,,like blocking D'linemen. Martin has missed almost as many, and the pass rushers are unseen. Where is the Dolphin pass defense? Not much of a run game, and the passing game could use a WR who can get behind the DBs.

Jake Long is fat and slow

Sean Smith has to go. He has no hands and could not catch a cold. He lays off tough receivers 10 to 20 yards giving them plenty of leeway to make the catch. Maybe he can be traded to the Colts, but no they saw how bad he is, so trade him to the Special Olympics.
