Dolphins struggling offense needs to wake up

On Tuesday I reported to you that Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman had a career chat with his players and implored them to overcome the difficulties of the past couple of weeks and make their sons proud.

It was Sherman's way, I guess, of challenging his players.

Well, I challenge Mike Sherman to make necessary corrections and make fans proud -- because the offense the Dolphins have been putting on tape for much of this season, and particularly lately, simply isn't good enough.

The Dolphins are averaging 19.2 points per game this season. That is 25th in the NFL.

That is the worst mark in the AFC East so far.

That is worse than a season ago when Miami averaged what we all considered an unacceptable 20.6 points per game.

The Dolphins have not scored a touchdown in six quarters.

The Dolphins are tied with Kansas City for the fewest passing TDs in the NFL (6) so far this season.

This is not good. Fact is, it is terrible because the Dolphins haven't exactly been playing stellar competition. The hard part of the schedule is coming up, believe it or not, after the Buffalo game.

“I think it’s just a lot of things that we just have to execute better," Sherman said. "It’s typical coach talk. We’ve got to execute a lot better. We’ve got to not have penalties. Not turn the ball over. Those things all play a part in it. Got to have good plays. I’ve got to call good plays -- make sure they’re the ones that apply specifically to that defense.

"There’s a lot of reasons, which we have to get fixed. There’s no question. This is unacceptable."

I cringe at the idea that Miami still has to play against the San Francisco and Seattle defenses.

The situation is frustrating because generally the Miami defense and special teams have been good enough, with the exception of the last two losses to Indianapolis and Tennessee, to provide Miami with a winning team.

So the offense needs to hop on its horse and giddyup.

The Bills, Thursday night's opponent, provide an opportunity. The Bills, to put it diplomatically, stink on defense.

They give up more points (31.7) per game than any other NFL team. They are dead last in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game. Combined, they allow 410 yards per game on the ground and through the air and that's 31st of 32 teams.

So the Bills are possibly a prescription for what ails the Dolphins offense.

Of course, I kind of thought that last week before the Tennessee game.

Trading away Marshall and Davis was as bad as the Marlins.

Scott, what would be the point of that? Season is over, playoffs are over. Might as well give the kid all the snaps no matter what. that's the only thing left to play for this season - to bank his personal progress so he will hopefully be better next year.

And agreed that Dansby should be better but how can we justify spending a first round pick on a MLB when we need a WR or secondary help so much more? Guess depends where we draft which is still very much in the air.

Te'o is the only LB worth drafting in the first anyway and he will be a top 10 pick.

The locker room has to be disgruntled. They've lost confidence in Tannehill and Philbin. So have I.

That's my point too. We have so many needs and guys want to spend our first on a MLBer. I don't quite get that strategy. Yes, the kid from ND is special and we could be set at the position for years but what about all the other needs we have? This idea of moving Dansby to OLBer and paying him $12 mil a year doesn't sit well with me either. To me he's too old and too slow to be a n effective OLB. You'd be better chopping him but to do that opens up another hole. I just think it's a flawed strategy.

TANNEBUST!.Last in the nfl on 3rd downs.LAST! for all of you morons who don't know what last means.
The BUST is 32nd.
0 TD's and 6! INT's.and what's the most important down in sports.?.
Ireland is an ars.hole and you homers are eating up.ENJOY LAST PLACE FOR THE NEXT 8 SEASONS. HAHA

At the beginning of the season I projected Dolphins record to be 8-8 with rookie QB and new system, 3 weeks ago I said wow!they are looking like a real team to compete for wild card, now, I project a record of 6-10 at best.... how many of you agree?

Not sure you caught my comment to you yesterday but a friend of mine has a pair of seats for the game tomorrow night. I think the value is $180-200. She's looking for $100 for the pair. I don't know what section yet but they are down low. Realize it's a bit of a trek for you but wanted to at least mention it to you.

Yeah they've played a baby schedule so far and it gets tougher with NE twice and SF. 6-10 sounds right.

Eh, they could still go 8-8. SF and the Pats (2x) aren't sure loses. Both have looked terrible at times. This is somewhat of an odd year. No team is really dominate. Houston probably the closest, but they were blown out bad by Green Bay.

"Well if they were actual loyal fans theyd show up.. But fans like yourself that complain and jump ship after 9 games, during a rebuilding year then yeah the stadium will be empty."

Matty B.,

You're correct. This was always going to be a REBUILDING year so the criticism that Tannehill gets on this blog is not only laughable but truly sad.

The way I see it, it's time to say good bye to the under performing veterans like Long & Bush & Smith & maybe Starks who are about to enter FA. If this is the way they play in a contract year how can we expect better results going forward???? This team has more needs than I care to name but the biggest mistake would be trying to address those needs with the same players who are a part of the problem.

Craig, agree with you 100%. The only sure thing the jays are getting is the left handed Roy Halladay in Buerhle. Johnson can walk if the dome isn't full and the team doesn't perform. Reyes is a good acquisition even at his worst.

However, Alvarez, Nicolino, Hech, and Marisnick can all turn out to be all stars.

Jays needed to do something for this year though - at least to build something because the natives were very restless...

Craig, unfortunately work gets in the way there. If it was a weekend, most definitely but looking at 6 hours driving after work and not getting in until 2-3 in the morning just doesn't work unfortunately.

Thanks for asking though.

Are you really this dumb dashi, or is this an act?

I think that's it EXACTLY. The fans needed something to be excited about. I like the Reyes add and Buehrle will be reliable. I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade Buck or JPA. They need to find a way for D'Arnaud to move up, even if he's not ready right now. Knowing Rogers they'll be instructing AA to move some salary.

We can look back on this a few years from now, but this trde isn't NEARLY as bad for the Marlins as the media is playing this up to be. Reminds me a bit of the David Cone trade and the Mets did alright in that one too, getting a guy by the name of Jeff Kent.

I'm very concerned about our running game that has completely disappeared. I have been for weeks. Am I the only one that doesn't see Reggie as an every down back? I see the guy as a 3rd down back. And D. Thomas is scaring no one with his 3.4 avg yards per carry.

The good news is that Bush is a FA after the season. The bad news is that Thomas & Miller are not good enough to be starters. Another need on a team that is full of them.....And then there are people who are ACTUALLY criticizing the play out of the QB position??? Aside from Hartline & Bess who else does Tannehill have to throw the ball to???

Tannehill has compiled his lofty 32nd ranking while playing against the worst D's in football. His numbers show he's worse then Henne. His 3 n outs and turnovers have put extreme pressure on our good defense. He still has the batted passes and accuracy question. Philbins allegance to Tannehill reminds me of Sparanos to Henne or Ross to Ireland. Keep doing what doesnt work.

bills- 56
phins- 3.

I see us at 6-10 or 7-9 with things the way they are right now and yeah things could get a little ugly by the end of the year. The team has some serious flaws which have been exposed (pass defense, run offense and no true #1 WR). We are definitely in need of a retooling and that will happen with all the FA's this offseason and draft picks. The job Ireland has this offseason is going to be very difficult.

No problem. I figured that but I wanted to mention it anyways. Always fun to be watching a game live in person but envious that you guys won't be out in the elements with the enemy.

rt will quit and b in med school next season.

Yes, I have an attractive and masculine penis.

mark go, the bills fans will feel sorry 4 u and they'll give u extra coats to keep warm and will by u a ton of free beer to drown u'r fins sorrow in.

Agreed except that there's a pretty decent chance that Ireland won't be making those decisions. If we have another losing season--which I expect we will after watching the last two games--then Ireland will have survived as GM for four straight losing seasons....That surely places him in Matt Millen company.

what games do u see them winning.
frigin' rams kicker, they could b 3-13 and had a shot at 1st over all again.- irecorn tho.

What part of the team quiting and the players don't care anymore don't you gals get.?

Not sure if anyone has talked about this since Sunday's drubbing but the Titans laid a major egg last week, before our game. Chicago embarrassed them the week before and the owner read them the riot act. Guys don't want to hear this but pro players for the most part have a real sense of pride and don't like being shown up, especially at home. it could just be that we came up against a team that was greatly motivated to erase their huge embarrasment. It could just be that they wanted the game a lot more than our guys. Now the question is, do our guys want it bad enough after being embarrassed at home. i could be giving the Dolphins too much credit but my guess is we show up this Thursday. We'll see,

bruce,is that u?

It really gets old with guys like Bruce who call Tannehill a bust. Yes he was a high pick but he is a rookie playing without any weapons. What is hard to understand about that. Calling him a bust and he hasnt completed his first year is purely moronic and have no football IQ at all.
Tannehill was a risk pick at 8 but this Franchise needed to take a new direction and take a risk instead of taking a sure less than stellar pick like you guys complain about the Long pick.
I respect peoples opinions but shut up already with the Tannehill is a bust or he sucks. The kid is playing in his 28th start total between college and the pros give him time to grow. He needs the game experience and in the offseason they will load him with weapons either through FA and/or the draft. Hell hes already made Hartline and Bess look better than they have their careers and that includes last year when Moore was the QB

Ireland will only go if Philbin and Sherman have someone in mind from their Packers braintrust to replace him with.

Ross has learned to defer to his football people (as he should) and they will make that determination---not the owner and certainly not the fans.

None of us has ANY idea of how good (or bad) their working situation is. No clue whatsoever. Anyone pretending otherwise is both delusional and a fool.

Kris, I'm convinced Wilson is doing the bare minimum, he isn't "lighting it up" he's doing just enough to win and get by, similar to Mark Sanchez's first two years. Good defense, good run game, good WRs, solid TE help, good OLine. Look where Sanchez is now after 2 years of being babied and now expected to let loose and carry a team. Turns out not to be a franchise QB and a wasted 4 years -- like Henne

the blacks on the team don't want 2 play 4 whitey no mo after benching bush"black" 4 poor play and not benching rt"whitey"4 his poor play.

I don't see Ireland being fired this year in any case. It's my opinion that he's done very well this year. I have jumped off the fireland bandwagon. I would be really surprised if he were fired unless you're taking the word of the "fans" here. At least on FB you can block them. Not sure why they don't make an effort to get rid of these 2nd rate trolls. I don't mind reading troll posts if it's not complete non sense or amusing but these trolls are just boring.

I like what Tannehill has done so far this year with the crappy O-line and mediocre receivers...I say let him play...looks like coach is gonna let him ride it out. He needs to pick up some of these 3rd down and short with his legs though.

Go team GO!

We are all comparing apples to oranges when talking about other players and teams against ours. First of all when Philbin was interviewed I am sure he sold the WCO to Ireland and Ross. This was a new system to all our existing players so most of our offensive players had to learn a new system and completely new play book. Russel came into Pete carrol's system so it was one player having to learn the play book. As for our defense, it is completely unfair to blame the line. It is 4 against the O line 5 players and when you add in a blocking TE and FB, it is the LB's (position says it all)that need to step up, which they are not doing. With out pressure up front opposing QB's have all the time in the world to pick apart our DB's and safeties.
Same scenerio in reverse. With out a sound running game our O line has to protect the QB for a couple of seconds more and if the opponents throws in a LB and DB for pressure that takes away our TE as a receiver running up the middle which would normally result in one more receiver to be covered. Hence maybe a receiver getting wide open down field more often. All in all our offense would be a lot different if we had 5 weapons (2 WR and 1 in the slot, a good TE and RB) instead of 2 (Hartline and Bess.)

armando kno's their will b no post season 4 the phinz again* and needs the hits 2 pay for his cruise he is gonna take in jan.

Hey! Dolphins fans this just in, the Fins are a bad team. They need draft picks to become a better team in about 2 years

BLAH BLAH they have to do this,BLAH BLAH BLAH,They have to do that.

When you have a white guy thats your best WR, thats not a good thing.

draft pix?. no.
banner planes.?. yes.

k,traylor and cam cam part deux.

There ya go Trittium, thats probably the most simplistic way it has been explained.. but you will get some people that want to argue that toolol

Same genius fanbase that was demanding Brady Quinn and Kyle Orton.

You'll excuse me if I don't take you guys seriously.

Hey! Dolphins fans this just in, the Fins are a bad team. They need draft picks to become a better team in about 2 years

Well said.

I'm not a Sanchez fan or defender of him but the team he's playing with now is NOTHING like those teams he took to the AFC championship game. Where's the running game? Where are the WR's they've drafted or signed to replace the guys they've lost. Defence has also lost a step or two also. It's just not the same team and to blame all of that on Sanchez just isn't fair. It would be the same thing if Flacco were to lose Ray Rice and a couple of the weapons he has on offence. He'd be nothing if it was left up to him to get it done.

Reggie Bush will be the key to if the Phins beat the Bills

Man that was some buffet!

Vontae Davis out AGAIN this week. Damn we miss this guy....would have looked great standing like a clown on the sidelines.

Tannehill = another Irescum bust.

Craig and everyone else!

How is letting Dansby and Burnett Go! A Bigger HOLE!! TO FILL! When U can get Anyone!! To Produce!!! Like the Dynamic Duo!! Literally Anyone!!

It's not like losing! A Impact Player!!!

Again, Dansby and Burnett!! Are not worth it!! To me S.Smith is more Valuable to this team!! And it's Future!! Even Starks!!

U can still get value at LB in the 2nd and 3rd Round!! Look at the last couple drafts!!

3 of the Top 5 Tacklers in the NFL are ROOKIES!!

Wagner and David were drafted! In the 2nd! After D.Hightower! And a Couple other Good OLB's!!

So don't give me the Dansby and Burnett! Are IMPORTANT! AND ANY GOOD!!! STOP BEING BLIND TO THE TRUTH!!!!

Heh, Brady Quinn...

Personally I hope they keep Ireland. He hasn't done anything huge in FA, but that isn't really a bad thing. Usually big FA moves don't pan out. Only good FA move this year I can think of is Peyton Manning, and even with that it's only a temp fix.

Ireland overall has done decent in the draft (not counting the drafts with Parcells). Even on picks that didn't pan out, like Davis, he managed to get value in return.

Also have to remember this is the first year under a new staff with a completely different system. Going from Sparano's run first and play D to more of a WCO system (or pass oriented at the least). Lots of personel changes to come, I would think. I'd hold judgement for another year or two unless the wheels completely fall off.

At this point last season the team was 1-7, really going to be concerned about 4-5?

Calm down.
Come with me to the El Rodeo Buffet for fulfillment and you will feel much better.

Listen man, I'm not having this conversation with you EVERY week. I know you get off on it but it's not working for me. This idea of 'when can get ANYONE to play LB for this team' isn't a plan. TELL me that plan. When you have it all worked out I'll listen. You don't have a plan....tell me the plan. ANYONE isn't a plan.

You honestly believe Russell Wilson doesn't have more talent around him than Tannehill??? He has three WR's to throw the ball to with Rice, Tate, & Baldwin, plus he has Zach Miller who is a top flight TE. Now throw in Lynch who is a true workhorse RB that has already rushed for over a 1000 yards this year & when you throw in Robert Turbin, they've combined 1172 rushing yards. In comparison Bush & Thomas have combined for 768 yards rushing. That's an extra 400 yards rushing spread out over the last 9 games.

I'd say that's slightly more talent than just Hartline, Bess, Fasano, & Bush/Thomas.

Do you even know HOW to use exclamation points and where they go?

Your thoughts are unreadable because they are (1) INSAME rants and (2) so badly written that I couldn't follow them if I wanted to.

When multiple people say you are a FOOL/JERK/HORSE'S BEHIND (take your pick), you might want to reconsider your image.

Just saying....

At this point last season the team was 1-7, really going to be concerned about 4-5?

Now that there is some kind of perspective ...

Dashi Bets!

Dansby and Burnett! Are already there getting Fat!!! Caddy!

How much are we paying Dansby? $100k per Tackle!!!

Heck the Guy who replaced R.Lewis!!!!!!!! D.Ellerbe! Has 6 less tackles than Dansby! In A lot less time as a starter!

And Guess what! He already has 2 10+ Tackle games!!!

How many does dansby have? What about his whole career? 2 Max! And that's being Nice!

Listen man, I'm not having this conversation with you EVERY week. I know you get off on it but it's not working for me. This idea of 'when can get ANYONE to play LB for this team' isn't a plan. If you really think that our LB's are the biggest problem on this defense you don't know jacksh#t about LB's. There are other things to take into consideration other than the number of tackles.

Yes I've seen both Dansby get beat in coverage & Burnett miss tackles BUT you're living in a vacuum if you think that every other LB doesn't occasionally make mistakes.

For the record I LOVED Kuechley & believed he was the safest pick in this draft BUT Tannehill was & will be the better pick.
