Dolphins waive Gaffney; sign TE Miller, make Matthews happy

Jabar Gaffney's career with the Dolphins lasted, oh, six games and he was active for only three of those. Gaffney, inactive last week against Buffalo, was waived a couple of hours ago.

The Dolphins are filling the roster spot with tight end Kyle Miller, who they claimed off waivers from Indianapolis. Miller was on the Colts' active roster one game and was headed back to their practice squad when he got the call this afternoon that he was claimed by Miami.

Miller is scheduled to arrive in South Florida Tuesday evening.

Gaffney?

Another disappointment.

Look, with the performances of Gaffney and Anthony Armstrong -- signed after training camp as stop-gap, desperation moves to help the wide receiver corps -- we should now be understanding that these moves that pick up somebody else's discards after training camp rarely work to any great degree.

The Dolphins, you'll remember, signed Gaffney in early October when he finally got healthy after missing all of training camp and being cut by the Patriots for having a calf injury.

But Gaffney didn't learn the Miami playbook very quickly. He was inactive three weeks before he finally got on the field. Then he played three games in which he caught four passes.

He was not the veteran presence fans hoped. He was not an obvious upgrade to Marlon Moore, actually. And now he's gone.

That depature clears the way for rookie Rishard Matthews to continue being active in games going forward.

Miller, meanwhile, is a 6-5 and 260-pound first year player from Mount Union. He was an undrafted free agent pickup by the Colts and was on the practice squad until the New England game when he was activated.

Miller is a developmental player.

The Dolphins have five tight ends on their active roster.

another garbage move gone bad by fireland

Is the new standard to release a player AS SOON as he learns the play book....

what gives Ireland.....

Why haven't you fired yourself yet....

I you saw UN DRAFTED next to his name...and you bout creamed your pants......

More ACORNS for Philbin and Sherman to work with.....

But you guys keep telling yourselves that PHILBIN is the problem....

kris....... YOU WERE WRITING LOVE LETTERS TO IRELAND A WEEK AGO AND NOW ,WHAT GIVES?

11-5......... ANY ONE ?

I say let Tanne sit on Sunday, and start Moore..

SEEMS WE SIGN THE OTHER TEAMS GARBAGE ....

Kris

Maybe you should pull your head out of the sand and see that the other 31 GM's in the league do the same thing. It's a constant shell game with bodies. Maybe you should take a look and see how many busts they draft as well.

You seem to enjoy being narrow minded just so you can have something to be bitter about.

We're dead in the water. why? We just can't seem to bring in players that contribute. Sure, I give Ireland some credit for some of his draft selections, but even a blind dog finds the fire hydrant on occasion. They say you build a team through the draft, but if you were able to get four quality starters every year, in 4 years you would only have 16 starter-quality players and some of them would be leaving through free agency. (We only have one player on the roster from the 2008 draft, when we had the top pick in each round.) You have to pick up contributing players in free agency, and we've done poorly in that area. Sure, players like Dansby and Burnett were good acquisitions, but there have been a host of misses as well: Jake Grove, Earnest Wilford, Gafney, Ochocinco, A. Armstrong, etc. I feel like our coaching staff has their hands tied - trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

THE DOLPHINS OWNER SHOULD DECLARE STATE OF EMERGENCY AND FIRE OUR GM ,THEN DECLAR MARSHALL LAW AND FIRE ALL THE GM PERSONAL .....

Is this the new standard? Player don't understand the playbook so release them. What about the coach who can't judge talent. Are the dolphins becoming the marlins. Who 's next Reggie B . Don't understand playbook. Really

looking forward to reshard matthews. they should have just played him from day one.

no balls.

Just more garbage to put on the roster. Why sign anyone? They can't fricken develop any young players.

So we have 5 tight ends now, one average one(Fasano), one who can't block or start (Clay), and 3 nobodies. 5 roster spots taken up with sub par talent. No wonder we are a losing team again.

Our entire roster is littered with crap players. It's a miracle we aren't 0-10 right now.

I like Reshard Mathews. I liked him in College and in the preseason. It is time to see what the young players can do. They need to make some decisions for next year. Ireland has had some good finds at WR in the late rounds since he has been here: Hartline 4th round pick and Bess undrafted free agent. Hopefully, Reshard is that next diamond in the rough.

Gaffney did not do much in the short time that he was here. He is over the hill.

I think if we had a better team we would have a better record.

i was hpoping it was Heath Miller

The Jests will probably jump on Gaffney but I could care less. Moore and hopefully Matthews are clear upgrades over Gaffney if not at the same level as him and they're younger. Gaffney may have been smarter due to experience but his performance was nothing to gloat about. Let's see what we have in those two WR and from an earlier blog let's see what we have in Egnew! If this Miller starts before Egnew does I would have to start shifting him to the bust column. Unless you're saving him from being poached or whatever underlying rule may get him picked up by another team there is no way an undrafted rookie should be starting in front of him. How bad can he be...

We won't find a #1 at this point in the season, might as well start looking for that WR in FA or the draft.

Kris

lol.....way to say a WHOLE lotta NOHING.......

WHY didn't you just say....

"I'm gonna make up a screen name and say the EXACT OPPOSITE of what Kris thinks.....

then your post would actually MAKE sense....

see ya next screen name.....

ohhh...

NEXT SCREEN NAME was @ 7:49....

you're ON FIRE tonight....

keep it up man....you're in the ZONE...your like the MIKE JORDAN of TROLLS.....

so ORIGINAL.....SO WITTY.....SO GOOD.....

i'm in AWE......

Kris, let's see, you're worried about a street FA who was sign after the season started, is only due game day paychecks, who was inactive for 3 games because he couldn't learn the playbook, had 4 catches in 3 games that he was active for. If I were you, I would worry about something else. No one will pick him up at this point because from here on out most team play with who they have. Every team brings in players like this after the season starts, Chloe even knows this.

Kris, you aren't that stupid are you krisie.

GENTLEMEN , Oh my... listen to the crying.#1 , give Philbin some time , 10 games , c'mon fellas.#2, Fins have 4 wins already ! Further along than last year at this point...not great , but better already. #3, They ARE developing players,(see rookie QB Tannehill), or did we all forget he IS a rookie , with limited college starts , doing a pretty darn good job. This is not supposed to be a year of records or making the playoffs....no , it's a year of evaluation , development , and listing FUTURE NEEDS...Anything this year is a BONUS. Unfortunately for us Fin fans , this seems to be too recurring , every 3 years or so...Philbin is an innovator , a guy who developed , umm , let's see , Oh yes , Aaron Rodgers.....The man wears a SB ring......c'mon man!

How many of you want us to sign Gaffney, it didn't work................so what.

mike...

even Kris NEVER said or even ADVOCATED the keeping of Gaffeney,,,,,that was ONE SENTENCE in his post.....

why don't you take some meds for you're ADHD...or obsessive compulsive nature....

there was more to Kris's post than ONE SENTENCE.....even Kris knows this...

Kris is right....

Signed,
NOT KRIS....

See... I can do it too....

I give miller 4 games and he will be waived!
Hahahahaha Jeff FIRELAND needs to get waived the f u c out of here! Can't wait! Loser!

Kris.....................WHAT. Are you Ricky Henderson talking in the 3rd person.

Kris, reread what you said Krisie, it made absolutely no sense.

Mike....

if you had and BRAINS @ ALL....

you would want EGNEW on the field...you know...this years 3RD ROUND DRAFT PICK.....and some other teams UNDRAFTED FA getting reps...be it PRACTICE OR GAME.....

But your s STUPID TROLL...so you only want the opposite of what a true FAN does...

SIGNED,
NOT KRIS....

We STILL have so many needs it's frickin ridiculous. No guards, a battered left tackle, 5 TE's that added up couldn't hold Jimmy Graham's jock. No wideouts, an offense coordinator who has no clue how to use Reggie Bush, No help for Wake, no difference making LB's, and 1 DB worth spit(Jones) maybe 2(Wilson). We have a GM with a load of picks and the question is does anyone trust this a-hole to make something of them?

Kris

I'm trying to work with you here but you are going to have to do a little better, maybe a lot better.

Kris.....................WHAT. Are you Ricky Henderson talking in the 3rd person.

Posted by: mike | November 20, 2012 at 08:06 PM
-----------------------------------------------

LOL...it went OVER you're head...lol.....

conversation is over....ask SANTA for a BRAIN......

mike,

Kris's two biggest influences here are odin and dashe, that is why he is now talking in the 3rd person. He wants to be like them.

Last year Kris was pining for Donovan McNab, Yes, that guy.

Just so you know what you are dealing with here.

lol....I had no IDEA you were so stupid troll....

YOU REALLY DON'T GET IT....YOU REALLY HAVE MNO IDEA WHAT I JUST DID.....

Your next sign-in name should be DUH.....and stick with it for a while......then maybe...just maybe you can graduate to sign-in name UH......

but for NOW...its DUH......

Kris,

If you spend your time responding to a blogger you think is so stupid, what does that make you?

Here's another thought...

The Steelers (apparently out of desperation) today, signed Plaxico Buress...

Does that mean that the Steelers had a worse set of receivers than the Dolphins. REALLY ??

I mean the Dolphins don't appear to have even been THINKING about Buress.

So my question is
Should Miami have pursued Plexico Buress ?
.
.

Uh.... excuse me guys,

But could this coaching staff some here accuse of being enept being sending a very strong message to Ireland and his talent scouts?

Its called garbage in garbage out. Sparano was a nice guy. He allowed the garbage to sit, mole, and stink up the joint.

Kris, you just show how stupid you are with every post..................moron.

Gaffney's never been really been an impact reciever any place he's been. He's usually been at his best when other great recievers were around.

You know, when he predominantly recieved nickel and dime db coverage. Plain and simple, Ireland sent Philbin a nickel/dime reciever, and he was let go a little more than "a quarter" ways into his short-lived Fins career.

Fins should have pursied Plaxico Burris? Why?

No way this team's going to the playoffs, this coaching staff knows that, and he's a one year rental at best.

Presently this offense averages about 55-60 plays a game. We're better off getting Rishard Matthews and Marlon Moore some of those snaps if we can. Seelng we wont even have a siff at playoffs, why sign an old progrss stopper, whose at a best a 1yr hired gun anyway.

Another acorn in another acorn out. Why do we replace acorns with acorns? I know cause we have an acorn GM. Fire f u c k I n g Ireland already!

Remember, Ireland brings in the players. Did Ireland even listen to Mike Sherman when he stated why Egnew's not likely to see the playing field for the remainder of the season? There's no way he can catch-up to where everyone else is playbook and schemewise.

So what does Ireland do? He goes out and signs another rookie TE who knows even less about what's going on than Egnew does. Does Ireland even pay attention at all?

Sherman probably gets this kid cut very soon and placed on PS at best.

Man, you guys are getting worked up over nothing. This is simply a move to give Matthews more reps because he looked good in limited action and the playoffs are no longer a possiblity.

Really?? The waiving of an old spare part who made 3 catches so we can give a draft pick a look raises this much fury??

Mark it's more than this one move dude. We've been rebuilding for 5 years since Ireland became GM how long will it takes before you realize he sucks. BTW how's Odrick doing yea the first round pick Odrick?

Sherman says he would like this offense to avg 70-78 plays per game. Averaging only 55-60 plays a game. This offense is about 25-28 plays per game off from where this OC would like them to be.

....And some of you wonder why some of the young offensive players have been so challenged to recieve offensive snaps. If the defense were not on the field 65-70 or more snaps per game. You would see more of these youngsters and thier gameday experience significantly increases.

Here is why Ireland should be fired:
He started a season without 2 bonafide starting WR's.
He didn't resign Yerimiah Bell and then signed a guy who is no longer active for more money.
He traded Vontae Davis for nobody and signed a guy who lasted 4 games.
He drafted an average QB when he finally started to win with a QB that is both young and good he already had instead of drafting Blackmon who is playing great.
He traded Brandon Marshall without getting anything of value in return.
So his tenure as GM has yielded an average center and a middle of the road QB instead of a stud safety and WR.
What will 2013 bring with this man buying the groceries?
Maybe another middling DE?

Dansby's Quote! And How It Happened! (Thanks Omar)

-------------------------------------------------------

Dansby injured his left arm in Miami’s 30-9 win over the New York Jets on Oct. 28 and this week he disclosed he’s playing with a torn left bicep and dislocated finger on the right hand.

Coincidentally, he suffered both injuries in that Jets game.

“I want to win. We have the opportunity to get into the playoffs. Why not play with it?” Dansby told WQAM (560-AM) during his weekly Friday segment with the Jorge Sedano show. “This tear in my bicep won’t hold me back. My pain tolerance is very high. My mental toughness is impeccable and I’m a competitor. I love to compete and love to win. That’s why it is so frustrating.”

Dansby, who leads the team with 76 tackles, told WQAM he’s playing with “some serious pain,” and that the finger pops out of place “every other play.”

Mark....

This has NOTHING to do with Gaffeny...and EVERYTHING to do with the PROCESS.....

Look @ the PROCESS......

When you look at everything that has happened since the draft its all pointed towards 2013. We had a solid but not great draft in 2012 and with 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, we can find stars who impact the game instead of acorns that may work out. All this providing Ireland is gone and we bring in the Polian's to right the ship. Look at the body of their Work in Indi and bill's work in Buffalo during the late 80's/early 90's. The man flat out knows how to draft.

Isnt it obvious Ireland didnt tell the truth about it being a rebuilding year? Dumping Marshall and Davis before season's begin didnt clearly state that?

How about spending an 8th overall pick on a qb no one expected to be a day one starter, but Matt Moore gift wrapped the starting position with one of the most awful preseason performance ever for a guy trying to compete for a starting job?

Remember, this a team 6-10 last year before Ireland dumped Marshall and Davis. Sitll, the strangest part is, we havent stopped rebuilding since 2008. % Years later, still stuck in rebuilding mode. We all know why. Right now its just:

WTF?

I guess Ireland couldnt say this was a rebuilding year considering we've been in rebuilding since 2008. LOL

YG (@ 8:37 PM)

Good post.

That's a decent argument against Buress...

So basically....the underlying theme here, is that this will be one of the most important Dolphins drafts within the past 15 years.

Let's hope that Ireland hits well on this one.
.
.

YG 08 was a fluke year how about since 2004.

Jersey Joe,

Steelers only signed Burris for redzone help. Last thing we need is a wr who cant help stretch the field. An old one at that.

Clue,

Technically we can go back even further. I start at 2008 with the Parcells/Ireland fo.

I'm fne with NOT signing Plaxico....

but to use the argument of a 1 year progress stopper doesn't seem to apply......

We signed one year progress stopper Armstrong...and Gaffney...along with a whole host of other 1 year contacts is memory serves me correct....

So i'm all for not signing Plax,,,,but I think it has more to do with his attitude...then his skill set.....

I ca nearly guarantee, this TE Miller was brought in because he was a guy Ireland had on his 2012 draft board, but was snatched up by the Colts.

Each year it becomes more difficult for dolfans to fully trust Jeff Ireland's draft board, fa board, or acorn board.

We signed one year progress stopper Armstrong...and Gaffney...along with a whole host of other 1 year contacts is memory serves me correct....
So i'm all for not signing Plax,,,,but I think it has more to do with his attitude...then his skill set.....

Kris,

An even stronger argument not to sign Burris.

Trusting Jeff Ireland to draft a decent player is like trusting Nevin Shapiro with your 401k money.

Jeff Ireland's gm approach seems to be, if you throw enough sh*t against the wall, eventually something has to stick.

We have 5 Tight Ends, none of them a real threat.
