'Everyone in the building' knows Dolphins need a burner

Rishard Matthews is going to have his playing time increase dramatically the rest of the season if things go according to plan. Earlier this week when the Dolphins cut Jabar Gaffney, they did so because they weren't thrilled with the veteran and because they have seen Matthews steadily improving in practice and deserving more playing time.

Gaffney was standing in the way of that playing time. So ...

Bye-bye.

That means the Dolphins have four wide receivers on the roster: Brian Hartline, Davone Bess, Rishard Matthews and Marlon Moore.

And that seems good to coach Joe Philbin.

"I like the guys that we have right now,” Philbin said.

Great. But Philbin is either stretching the truth or totally alone on this one because I am told "everyone in the building" at the Dolphins facility is aware the Dolphins need to add a dynamic speed receiver or two this offseason.

And that is what Miami fully intends to do somehow -- via the draft, free agency or kidnapping.

The Dolphins currently have what is commonly being termed as a red zone offense. That, by the way, is not a good thing.

A red zone offense is a unit that basically operates inside a 20- to 30-yard span of field throughout the entire field. In other words, the club doesn't have players that consistently threaten to go 70 yards for a score. The Dolphins offense doesn't have a receiver that scares the defense,

The Dolphins believe they need a receiver that a) forces the defense to game plan for that receiver and b) forces the secondary to back up because that receiver can blow the top off the defense.

Pittsburgh's Mike Wallace comes to mind.

I'm not saying the Dolphins will go after Wallace in free agency. I'm saying the team needs someone that does what Wallace is capable of doing.

Hartline, a good No. 2 wideout, is not that guy. Neither is Bess, although he's a good slot guy. Both are solid. Both have value. But both are complementary to a Wallace-type.

The ironic thing is the Dolphins have been in need of this kind of player for years. And they've been trying to some small degree to land this kind of player -- thus the drafting of Ted Ginn by Randy Mueller and Clyde Gates by Jeff Ireland.

But neither Patrick Turner nor Brandon Marshall nor several of the other wide receiver fixes the Dolphins tried to make aside from adding Ginn and Gates were flyers that made defenses respect the entire field rather than just worry about a 20 to 30 yard swath.

Ironic, isn't it? Fans have been begging for a speed receiver for a long time. But the Dolphins haven't really had a good one since Irving Fryar. That was the mid 1990s. (Hand it to Don Shula! He had Mark Duper and when Duper declined, he traded for Fryar. He also had a guy named Paul Warfield.)

But everyone not named Shula has missed on getting a bigtime deep threat.

Jimmy Johnson once famously said "separation is over-rated" by a wide receiver. The Dolphins went to big, physical but not really fast wide receivers such as Marshall and Oronde Gadsen. And even O.J. McDuffie, a possession receiver, led the team in catches.

Nothing wrong with that.

But today's game is not three-yards and a cloud of dust. It's not even 15-yards and a first down. Today's game is 49-yards over the top and touchdown!

The Dolphins apparently have come to the realization, from what I'm told. They need a productive burner on the outside.

They need to upgrade.

YG,

I don't think you're actually reading what I'm saying. Doesn't matter. You want T'eo I think we have other needs. It has NOTHING to do with not wanting the guy, I think he's going to be a great Pro. I just believe we won't have solved what ails this defence. It's a difference of opinion. That's all.

THE SAME DONKEYS WHO SPEAKS ABOUT DRAFT AND PLAYERS TO BE PICKED ARE STILL SAYING THE SAME CRAP EVERY YREAR ....

USING THESE WORDS ;;;

(( PLAYMAKERS ))

HOW CAN WE SPEAK ABOUT DEFENSE ,WHEN OUR OFFENSE SUCKS BIG TIME ?

Swing and a miss with Egnew Ireland needs to get back in the box hes got at least two more swings until he has struck out on TEs.

clue hes played 10 games. most thought thill wouldnt even see the field this year. hes coming along fine. we need to fill the other 22 holes we have

CadillacDeVille,

Here's my 2013 draft and why:

My 2013 Draft Board:
1. Manti T'eo
2a. WR--------(2b.) Corner
3a. Corner----(3b.) WR
4. TE
5. TE
6. TE
7. K

1. Manti T'eo simply because this type of guy ilb just doesnt come out every year. He'll be a defensive anchor for years to come. He's as close to cant miss as they come at that position.

2A-2B. No brainer Wr and Corner. Same thing 3A-3B. If nothing else we're upgrading both units. Both units need huge upgrading, so lets make it twice as nice.

4-5-6. Triple downing something has to emerge. Plus shows conviction to fnally trying to get this position
right.

7. Kicker. Need to bring in competition for Carpenter.

I know guys like CraigM what a pass rusher #1. However, pass rusher is top of my draft list in 2014. Also, 2014, I would like to add another olineman with the 2nd rd pick.

I believe following this draft blueprint works. Most likely it won be before 2014 before we're ready to make a serious run at anything anyway.

I'm not sure why everyone is saying we haven't drafted playmakers. What do you guys consider Tannehill, Egnew, Miller and Thomas? May not be the guys you wanted but they are still playmakers. Kind of hard to keep drafting playmakers when you have gaping holes at LT, RT and C.....but you're right. Let's just keep drafting playmakers. After all, who needs to protect the QB....this is flag football, don't you know.

Biggest hole is at QB.

Also, don't forget, we gave up TWO second round picks for the playmaker everyone said would be the final piece, Brandon Marshall. Didn't quite work out that way.

YG........ IS TALKING 13 AND 15 PICKS ...SAME OLD,SMAE CRAP ......

THE CELLAR ......

3rd-4th-5th rds draft TE's all 3 rds.

hahahaha! did some FREAK. Just say at max 6 - 10? They plays the Jags and Bills at home if they win on Sunday it's a guaranteed 7 wins IMO

YG,
I waited 5 years to get here and now I have wait 2 more years to be a contender?
WTF!

Meant 4th-5th and 6th rd draft TE's. We're bound to luck into at least one very good one that way. Better than wasting the picks on acorns that never do anything special anyway.

Forget about defense as a first round pick some of you are baffling to me. Defense! Are you kidding me? Name one threat on offense other teams game plan against just one??? Bill didn't RG3 play his 10th game as well RG3 16 and 4 picks what's Tannehill numbers?? IMO he better step his game up ASAP.

We need offensive playmakers not Teo

Question to everyone: Jake Long or Mike Wallace?

YG......

CLUE IS VERY TALENTED POSTER,HES RIGHT ON ALL ACCOUNTS...PLEASE READ HIS POST @ 1;22 PM.....YOU MAY LEARN SOME ....

Well Craig then we need to draft a new GM if he can't select the right playmakers.

YG,

Sorry bud but I've got to call you out on this one. Just a couple of years ago you were saying 'no TE's 4th round or later'. It's a wasted pick. Now you're saying 'draft TE's in rounds 4, 5 and 6'. Huh?

It's definitely a flip-flop!

Clue,

Who do you suggest as our 1st offensive pick?

Most likely we're picking top 10. So even if youve named a player, have you researched if its a good spot to pick this player?

I know 100% sure top 10 isnt a good place to select a TE. But have you researched to find out that the wr class is at least 2 rds deep without a great separation in the talent level?

I'm just glad we did not take PriceMaster's idea to franchise Henne (because he wanted out of here) and draft Blackmon #1.

If we had done that we would be stuck with the combo of Henne/Blackmon.

Luckily for us that combo exits in J'ville and week 1 was last Sunday when Blackmon had 7 catches for 250 yards and no drops.

And that's having NEVER worked together in practice.

When the Henne/Blackmon show comes to Miami in 3 weeks we will all have a good laugh at how s hitty a combination that is.

And Pricemaster can go fu@k himself!

CRAIG M HAS A MEMORY OF AN ELEPHANT .....

YOU REMEMBER WHAT YG SAID 2 YEARS AGO ?

I DON'T BELIEVE IT .....

Ks easy Wallace.

I expect another FA period just like the last 5. And evidently we'll have 20 openings, 10 we can fill with the draft, the other 10 we will fill with FAs so that we can meet the league required minimum of 53 players on the roster.

CraigM,

Guess youre frustrated. If I say in a previous year, years and needs are diffrent. So it doesnt make one a flipper flopper because he see his gm does nothing with those picks anyway.

Guess your problem is you get upset when one doesnt see it your way. I just fail to see a pass rusher worthy of top 10 pick. Definitely not from the SEC.

I made a post top name 1 dominant pass rusher from the SEC in the last 5yrs. But I guess you skipped presenting an answer to that one.

CraigM, no offense, but having you as a gm would scare hell out of me even more than having Jeff Ireland. You only do enough research to selectively listen to only what makes your case and omit everything else.

YG, Justin Hunter, Robert Woods (skeptical of USC WR though), Sammy Watkins. Get rid of Long use that money to sign Wallace. Draft Bjorne from FSU in 2nd. Not sure what's out there for TE but cut Fasona already or make him a number 2.

If we draft Offense first it has to be RB to replace Bush, no?

Cadillac just say no to RB in the first round.. Frank Gore was a 4th rounder

Guys,

I have a question for all:

Why would you pick a pass rusher from the SEC top 10. When we know the SEC has the worst passing attacks. So we also know hier pass blockers are also inferior because thier teams rarely pass.

Does this just not make sense to me? If so, I appologize to everyone on this block including CraigM.

Looking over our remaining Games, I think we can win 2 more. That will put us at 6-10. Maybe we can pick 5th.

YG,

Likewise, it would scare me if you were GM of this team too. I still remember how you told us Ricki Stanzi was going to be the top QB of his draft year. Didn't quite work out that way.

Gotta go....

CRIAG M.... DID YOU READ YG LOVE LETTERS TO OUR GARAGE MANAGER FEW WEEKS BACK ?

Clue,

Deep wr class, 2 rds deep. None of these guys have clearly separated himself as head ans shoulders better than the rest.

That's why I wouldnt take any higher top 10. There's no true separation from any of them that are 1st rd rated.

Steadman Bailey rated 2nd-3rd, and this guy has like 15 or more recieving tds. He's had 2 outstanding recieving seasons in a row. DC's know capabilities and still is unstoppable. Unbelieveble he's rated possibly going into the 3rd.

This is a very good wr class.

YG........IS THE KING OF HAVING BOTH SIDES OF EVERY ISSUE ............

Agreed. With YG.

IF U LOOK AT THE 2-3 YEAR WINDOW!! NOT JUST BLINDED BY THE PRESENT!! THIS IS A PROCESS!! (Reason Dashi Feels Philbin Might ADVISE IRELAND! NOT TO SPEND ON FREE AGENTS! Maybe just 1 WR! WE ARE BULIDING THRU THE DRAFT!)

THIS DRAFT IS LOADED WITH DEFENSE!! AND TO GET A GOOD WR! U HAVE TO LOOK AT THE FREE AGENTS! OR PICK SOME ACORN IN THE MID ROUNDS!! THE 2014 Draft Will Have the GOOD WR'S! THE VALUE IN THIS DRAFT IS ON DEFENSE!!

With that Said. Playing Matthews And Moore! For the Rest of the Year!! Gives the Coaches MORE FILM!! ON OUR YOUNG PLAYERS!! WHO TO KEEP?

Matthews Could Turn Out to be Our Victor Cruz! Or a Miles Austin! A Dynamic WR!! Like Some have said The Only 2 Wr's!! Since Warfield! That have been Complete Wr's! Are I.Fryar and A OLD C.CARTER!!! The Second One Doesn't Count! Because CC Was to Old When the Fins Got Him! U can Replace him With a Inconsistent C.Chambers! But They have been The Only 2 Complete Wr's Since 72!! Fryar And CC!! PITIFUL!!

Free Agency is Another Reason The Fins Want to Give D.Thomas the Ball More!! THE FINS HAVE SEEN ENOUGH OF BUSH!! And His DWTS! BUT Out Of Respect! They let him Start! THE WRITING IS ON THE WALL!! Ricky And Ronnie 2.0! Starting Next Season! With Thigpen as a #3! And Some Acorn! As the 4th RB! OR Make J.Lane A RB/FB!!

Lane at RB, Clay at FB/H-Back! That Should be the Real Short Yardage! Backfield! Give the Train a Head Of Steam!! If or When Things Get Really Rough! And It's a Goalline Situation! Replace Clay! With Soliai! A REAL Jumbo Backfield! Lane and Soliai! If U Can't Get a Yard With That!! U Deserve To Be Fired!

-------------------------------------------------------

Agreed! A TOP 10 PICK DE!! SHOULD GET AT LEAST 15+ Sacks! A YEAR FROM THE START!!! Cause Even! Vernon! Can End Up With 8! As A PART-TIME PLAYER!!

WHILE A TOP 10 PICK MLB! CAN GET U AROUND 150+ Tackles! And 4-6 INT'S A YEAR! With A Couple Sacks!!

Dashi is With Hearing Goddell say, With The 8th Pick in The 2013 NFL Draft. The Miami Dolphins Select Mantei Te'o! MLB! Out Of Notre Dame!

ALoco,

DID YOU READ THE LOVE LETTER FROM THE MANUFACTURER OF THE DISHMACHINE AT YOUR PLACE OF EMPLOYEE? WHEN YOU READ IT, YOU BECAME MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE OPERATING YOUR DISMACHINE DIDNT YOU?

((BUFFET OF LOVE LETTERS AND DISHMACHINE MANUALS))

YG.......

WHEN YOU POST ON A BLOG,YOU GOT TO WRITE WITH DIGNITY ,NOT FLIP FLOP ALL YEAR,THINKING NO ONE WILL NOTICE ..........

EVEN CRAIG M REMEMBERS YOUT FLIP FLOP FROM 2 YEARS AGO......

KS Mike Wallace, BP made that mistake one time taking a lineman over a playmaker.

ESPN had an article about Ryan Tannehill struggling against Base Defenses. The article stated earlier in the year defenses were blitzing as they would with a rookie. Tannehill was one of the most accurate passers against the blitz.. Other teams stopped blitzing, brining only 4 rushers, taking away the short underneath passes and the run. There isnt a true #1 that can get open down field.

All of my best friends are here with the exception of Kris.
My best friends are oscar canosa/Aloco/Dashi/Kris. We are all fond of fondling each other.

ALoco,

NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT YOU FLIP FLOPPING ANYTHING. YOU NEVER POST ANYTHING WORTHY NOR HAVE A CONVICTION TO ANYTHING BUT GARBLED NONE SENSE. THEN ATTACK POSTERS WHO HAVE FAR MORE BALLS THAN YOU.

I GUESS IF ONLY POSTING THE OBVIOUS AND NEVER HAVING BALLS NOR BRAINS TO STEP OUT ON A LIMB. YOU'LL NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT BE WRONG.

EXACTLY WHY YOUVE FOUND A PERMANANT PLACE OF EMPLOY IN THE DISHROOM. YOU DONT HAVE THE BALLS IT TAKES FOR SUCCESS. EVEN TO SAY YOURE "BIG BIRD" YELLOW INSULTS BIG BIRD.

((BUFFET OF DAILY ALOCO'S JUSTIFIES HE KINGPIN OF THE DISHROOM ONLY))

Will you guys stop with WR seperation already.
The only QB that needed seperation to be successful was Noodlearm Pennington.
Every other QB completes passes by throwing frozen ropes to COVERED WRs in spot where they can make a play.
A WR IS ALWAYS OPEN ON THE SIDE OF HIS BODY OPPOSITE THE DB.

ALOCO,

I THINK I'LL START REFERRING TO YOU AS "YELLOW-CO"

Glamorous? and you posted this ? lol

Yes, I consider each of them to be somewhat glamorous because they all have that "it" factor where they can effortlessly go from business attire to a chic little cocktail dress and heels.

This is a very fashionable blog. I congratulate each and every lady here for keeping good taste and classic style alive.

Speaking of Odin:
Last I heard he was following around Neil Young w Carzy Horse and volunteering to warm up the necks of the Basses before the show starts.
He warms up the neck by sliding his hand up and down the neck over and over again.
So far all of his volunteer applications have been rejected but he is still trying to live the dream.

Who starts out getting 15 sacks a year???

Ridiculous.

Lol 15 sacks a season BTW we passed on JJ watt

MARK,,,, 15 SACKS A YEAR .........THAT WAS WRITTEN BY ONE OF THE DONKEYS ON THIS BLOG...

As 40 year Dolphin fan who now lives out west, I saw a lot of Rishard Matthews prior to him being drafted by the Dolphins. He fits Philbin's philosophy and style of player (refer to the receivers in Green Bay). Rishard got better every year playing for coach Alt (college hall-of-fame coach)at UNR and inventer of the pistol offense. Many thought Rishard would slip back in his senior year after Kaepernick moved on to the NFL. Instead, he had his best season as a college player. He is a smart, hard-working kid with more physical gifts than any receiver on the Dolphins roster. He has to learn the route tree better, get in sync with Tannehill, and learn to read NFL DB's and defenses better. Once he does, he will surpass Hartline for the #2 spot on the team. He's faster than Hartline, though not a burner, and he has huge hands and catches very well. He's tough, plays big, is willing to block on running plays, and I think that he will be one of the successes of the 2012 draft for the Dolphins. This team still needs to add 2 big play receivers. IMO, a veteran who can help right away and a rookie who can be developed.

HOW IS MLB!! NOT THE BIGGEST HOLE ON DEFENSE!!!

CLOWNS!! JAKE IS A FREE AGENT!! HE DOESN'T COUNT TOWARDS THE CAP!!! NOW DANSBY AND HIS $12+ Mil a Year! DO!!

U FOOLS!!! THE ONLY 3 SPOTS!! ON THE O-LINE THAT ARE COVERED BY GREAT PLAYERS!! ARE LT,C,RT!!! THE PROBLEM IS WE HAVE 2 FAT DUMB GUARDS!!! THAT DON'T FIT!! LONG, POUNCEY, AND MARTIN!! COME FROM A ZONE BLOCKING SCHEME!! AND ARE TOP 5 AT THEIR POSITION! MARTIN IS STILL A ROOKIE!! BUT BY NEXT YEAR HE WILL BE AT LEAST A TOP 10 RT!! WE NEED GUARDS!! 2 OF THEM!! HECK DRAFT A COUPLE IN THE 4TH AND 5TH! THIS O-LINE COACH SHERMAN AND PHILBIN HAVE IS THE TRUTH! THE GUY DEVELOPS FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS! LOOK WHAT HE HAS DONE WITH MARTIN IN LESS THAN 1 SEASON! HE'S MADE JERRY SERVICEABLE!

AND AGAIN!! THE ONLY GOOD WR'S THIS YEAR ARE FREE AGENTS!! AND SPECIFICALLY!!! 1!!! MIKE WALLACE!!

Let's Say Matthews Develops Into a Keeper! We Will Go Into Next Year! With Bess and Matthews! AS THE ONLY SURE THINGS! We Can RESIGN HARTLINE! THOSE 3 AND A GUY LIKE MIKE WALLACE!! MAKES A GOOD GROUP!! MEANING WASTING A HIGH PICK ON A WR!! IS FUTILE!! SPECIALLY WITH A WEAK CLASS!! WHEN IT COMES TO 1ST RD TALENT!

ON THE TE'S U CAN GET VALUE!! IN THE MID ROUNDS!! ALWAYS HAVE!!

-------------------------------------------------------

NOW ON U TE'O HATERS!!!

IF U DON'T WANT TO ADMIT!! THE FINS NEED A MLB!! The FINS NEED A CB OR A SAFETY!!! A HECK OF A LOT MORE!! THAN A PASS RUSHER!!

WE EVEN NEED A D.BROOKS TYPE OLB!! OVER A PASS RUSHER!! A GUY THAT CAN COVER!! TE'S AND RB'S!!! AND OWNS THOSE 10 YARDS!! FROM THE LOS TO THE FIRST DOWN MARKER!! SIDELINE TO SIDELINE!!

The Best Defensive Player Coming Out! IS Te'o! Kuechly Was It This Year! And PATRICK WILLIS Was Considered That When He Got Drafted! AFTER TEDD GINN"S FAMILY! #9!

HOPEFULLY! THE DRAFT HOLDS TRUE! AND TE'O GOES WHERE MOST GREAT MLB'S ARE GOING! From #7-#11! Around Where The FINS SHOULD BE DRAFTING!

I Wouldn't Mind knowing like This Year! That If T-Hill Was Still There at #8! We Will Pick Him!

Draft Our Franchise QB! His First Year! And Then Draft The QB Of The Defense!! His Second Year!! Philbin Would Have Set Himself and The Fins!! Up!! For a Long Time!! ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL!!

PHILBIN IS A SMART MAN!! IRELAND DOES HIS JOB!! THE FINS WILL MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION!

DASHI,

MAKE IT SHORT,PLEASE

PhinPhaninReno,
How lucky and convenient for us that a fan of Mathews at Nevada-Reno (Div II or III?) just happens to show up in this blog today.
Just so you know oscar canosa/Dashi/Aloco/Kris and I are a fivesome so don't try any monkey business with them.

My predictions for the upcoming draft, if Ireland is kept:
Rd 1: A right guard who can run block but not pass block.
Rd 2a: A left guard who can run block but not pass block.
Rd 2b: A defensive tackle, because we are so thin in that area.
Rd 3a: A raw tight end who will never work out.
Rd 3b: A running back who is slated as a 6th round pick by every one else.
All the other picks: All defensive lineman, as we move from a 4-3 to a 6-1.

Te'o would be my pick if we're in a position to take him. I stick to my Ertz pick in the second round. About a burner, we're starting to sound like Al Davis here: pick the fastest player no matter what. Rather pick BPA than draft another Clay or Heyward-Bay just 'cuase they're fast.

I think I won some kind of award here. In any case, if he and us continue to play the way we are playing, T'eo will never fall to Us, YG.

We didn't pass on JJ Watt. he was drafted before our pick. We took Mike Pouncey that year #15

oscar canosa,
I am seeking mental health treatment for undiagnosed disorders, possibly multiple-personality, can you recommend anyone in the area?
I am a veteran and I have insurance also (through my employer not medicaid).

Armando,

The smell from the Tuna era still lingers. Parcells hated WR's and did not do a very good job recruiting at the skill positions. Ireland may not be to blame because he was under Parcells heavy direction but he really has not done anything to bring in a TE or WR after Parcells left. In fact he has failed. Going with Mike Wallace might work but he may want to much $$$. Armando all due respect but I would not consider Hartline a good #2 receiver. He is fast enough but not quick enough out of his breaks. He is more of a good #3 or 4 receiver. The Dolphins and fans have become used to WR's that are at best average. So guys like Hartline and Bess seem better than they are. Bess and Hartline would not start on most of the better offensive teams in the NFL.

Aldon Smith!

Von Miller!

JPP!!

Clay MAtthews!

AND MANY MORE!!

WHEN THE WORD "FRANCHISE DE"!! COMES UP!! IT'S USUALLY!! WITH A TOP 5-10 PICK!! THAT FITS A PROTOTYPE!! AND 15+ SACKS IS PART OF THE PROTOTYPE!! ALONG WITH SPEED AND SIZE!! USUALLY 6'4+ 260+ AND RUNS IN THE 4.6! AND THAT'S BEFORE WE GET INTO HIS STRENGTH AND PASS RUSH MOVES!!

I'M ASKING THE MLB!! TO GET MORE THAN 150+ TACKLES!! THAT'S A PRETTY HIGH STANDARD!!! ALSO!! U KNOW AVG ABOUT 10 TACKLES A GAME!!

It's Like U Guys That Want A CB!! In The First!! That MEANS THE GUY SHOULD AVERAGE 5+ INT's!! AND CAN COVER!!

Same Goes For a Free Safety!

-------------------------------------------------------

OR BETTER YET FOR U WR!!! FANS!!!

A TOP 10 PICK, WR!! SHOULD COME IN OFF THE BAT!! AND AVERAGE OVER 1000 YDS A SEASON AND 10 TD's!! MINIMUM!!

HOW MANY ROOKIE WR'S HIT THAT MARK? How Many of Them Are 1st Round Picks?

Look at the Jets! A WASTE OF A 2nd!!

REASON DASHI SAYS FIND THE WR!! IN FREE AGENCY!! IT'S SAFER THAT WAY!!

AND PHILBIN WILL CONSIDER ATTITUDE!! WHEN SIGNING A FA!! UNLIKE PARCELLS!! HE LOVED DIVA WR'S!! LOOK AT HIS TRACK RECORD!! Keyshawn, T.Glenn, T.O., Marsha!

Parcells Thought Spo can Control Marsha! Boy Was He Wrong!
