'Everyone in the building' knows Dolphins need a burner

Rishard Matthews is going to have his playing time increase dramatically the rest of the season if things go according to plan. Earlier this week when the Dolphins cut Jabar Gaffney, they did so because they weren't thrilled with the veteran and because they have seen Matthews steadily improving in practice and deserving more playing time.

Gaffney was standing in the way of that playing time. So ...

Bye-bye.

That means the Dolphins have four wide receivers on the roster: Brian Hartline, Davone Bess, Rishard Matthews and Marlon Moore.

And that seems good to coach Joe Philbin.

"I like the guys that we have right now,” Philbin said.

Great. But Philbin is either stretching the truth or totally alone on this one because I am told "everyone in the building" at the Dolphins facility is aware the Dolphins need to add a dynamic speed receiver or two this offseason.

And that is what Miami fully intends to do somehow -- via the draft, free agency or kidnapping.

The Dolphins currently have what is commonly being termed as a red zone offense. That, by the way, is not a good thing.

A red zone offense is a unit that basically operates inside a 20- to 30-yard span of field throughout the entire field. In other words, the club doesn't have players that consistently threaten to go 70 yards for a score. The Dolphins offense doesn't have a receiver that scares the defense,

The Dolphins believe they need a receiver that a) forces the defense to game plan for that receiver and b) forces the secondary to back up because that receiver can blow the top off the defense.

Pittsburgh's Mike Wallace comes to mind.

I'm not saying the Dolphins will go after Wallace in free agency. I'm saying the team needs someone that does what Wallace is capable of doing.

Hartline, a good No. 2 wideout, is not that guy. Neither is Bess, although he's a good slot guy. Both are solid. Both have value. But both are complementary to a Wallace-type.

The ironic thing is the Dolphins have been in need of this kind of player for years. And they've been trying to some small degree to land this kind of player -- thus the drafting of Ted Ginn by Randy Mueller and Clyde Gates by Jeff Ireland.

But neither Patrick Turner nor Brandon Marshall nor several of the other wide receiver fixes the Dolphins tried to make aside from adding Ginn and Gates were flyers that made defenses respect the entire field rather than just worry about a 20 to 30 yard swath.

Ironic, isn't it? Fans have been begging for a speed receiver for a long time. But the Dolphins haven't really had a good one since Irving Fryar. That was the mid 1990s. (Hand it to Don Shula! He had Mark Duper and when Duper declined, he traded for Fryar. He also had a guy named Paul Warfield.)

But everyone not named Shula has missed on getting a bigtime deep threat.

Jimmy Johnson once famously said "separation is over-rated" by a wide receiver. The Dolphins went to big, physical but not really fast wide receivers such as Marshall and Oronde Gadsen. And even O.J. McDuffie, a possession receiver, led the team in catches.

Nothing wrong with that.

But today's game is not three-yards and a cloud of dust. It's not even 15-yards and a first down. Today's game is 49-yards over the top and touchdown!

The Dolphins apparently have come to the realization, from what I'm told. They need a productive burner on the outside.

They need to upgrade.

Oscar, yes--you were named one of the most glamorous posters here. Congratulations!

Well, there's this Phd Psychologist called Manny Alvarez who has a lot of experience on Dissociation and the Others. You might try to contact him, Cadillac. Tell him I referred you. He knows me.

Have you seen the Others in People that suffer from Multiple Personality Disorder? Freaky.

Dashi, Now that your here how long before odinstank wakes up from his drunken tirade he had this morning (Again from 3am to 6am)

Dashi, come on, Miller set the all time rookie record with 17. JPP nor Matthews came out banging with 15 sack seasons. In fact the number of players period that come out with 15 sack seasons in any given year, you can count on one hand.

I love Odin's drunken tireades. he trolls the trolls - can't beat that.

Mark, Look at Odinstanks post from 3am to 6(Posting under different names of coarse) He was attacking anyone and evryone Quite rude IMHO But if he's your hero what can I say?

Poor odin doesn't even realize he is a source of comedy here. The funniest part is when he imagines people are laughing WITH him rather than AT him.

Mark We are Talking About POTENTIAL!!

THEY DIDN'T DO IT THE FIRST YEAR!! BUT HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO MAKE 15+ SACKS!! AND DID IT BY THEIR SECOND YEAR!!

WHILE MLB'S ARE LIKE RB'S!! U GET RESULTS!! FROM THE BEGINNING!

AND REMEMBER SACKS WILL GO UP WITH MORE PASS ATTEMPTS!! 15 SACKS IS THE NEW 10! LAW OF AVERAGES! THE SACK RECORD WILL BE BROKEN FREQUENTLY THE NEXT COUPLE YEARS!!

Aldon Smith And JJ WATT Might Both END THE SEASON WITH OVER 20 SACKS!!

THE SACK NUMBERS ARE UP THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE NFL!! They're will be OVER 50 Guys By the End Of the Year That Will have More Than 10 Sacks EACH!

Just Like U Have MORE GUYS THROWING OVER 500 ATTEMPTS A YEAR!! SACKS AND INT'S WILL GO UP!!

OBL, never said he was my hero ... where did you read that?

I just like the way he attacks people who come on here and do nothing but trash the team. Do some people get caught in the crossfire sometimes? maybe but what do you expect from a guy who blogs at 3am while the rest of the eastern part of the continent sleeps?? I've always had a respectful blogging interaction with the man though. He does know his football.

Who is Odin?

anyone who uses multiple names is schizophrenic and needs to consult me immediately for an evaliation

Why is a PhD Psychologist better than say a Psychiatrist?

OBL,

Dashi will not Acknowledge U Or UR Partner! Until U ANSWER MY QUESTION!!

Oscar, Your thoughts on Odinstanks personalty dis-orders, Is it cause of drugs, alcohol or a bump on the head?
And a follow up question, Can Medical science help the old coot?

Sources say Ireland wont be around by the end of the year..

odin is deprived of attention both as a child and presently, he comes here to boost his ego or get a laugh, neither of which he can get at home. its attention deficit disorder except he doesnt have ADD he is deprived of attention...an attention deficit

spending my night with, as odin would say, my hottie. remember brown pusssy is better then white which is better then black but in the end they are all pink

Kris, have you recovered already from the other night?
You were exposed to be a pathetic, in denial, crybaby and you even resorted to blatantly lying to try to boost your ridiculous story.

Let that be a lesson, and think twice before you go being a total azwipe to others for no good reason other than you are a bitter person.

Until Ross makes a determination to keep or allow Jeff Ireland to walk, Miami is going to be a mystery.Unlike some, I an unwilling to say Ireland is all bad. Like many others, I can point out some solid moves and a few cases where he steered Miami away from yet another HUGE mistake at QB. However, to ignore the mistakes and oversights is to be foolish. With Bill Polian and his son Chris available to Miami. It will be hard for Ross to at LEAST not pursue the Polian & Son angle. Polian has rebuilt/revived and placed 3 NFL Franchises in the playoffs multiple times and won a SB or so along the way. Miami is heading into an off season with $55 Million to spend and 5 picks in the first 96 draft picks in 2013 (along with more picks later on) and a plethora of starters who are playing the final years of they're deals. Ross may seem a dope... But you don't become a Billionaire who is one of the Richest men in the USA being a complete moron. Regardless of years gone by, this is without a single doubt the most important off season the Miami Dolphins franchise has hade in more then 3 decades. THIS OFF SEASON, will decide whether or not Miami will be a contender or a New York Jests style ongoing disappointment that never ends. All teams, save for teams like New York's Jests, Atlanta, Detroit, Minnesota, Buffalo, Houston, Seattle,KC, San Diego and a few others who have had next to ZERO Superbowl success in they're franchises histories even after trying and even getting there and losing has a decade or so of mediocrity to punish they're fans with. But it is the greats who have that disappointing time of one rebuild and coaching change after another and are still trying to find they're way back to greatness. Some of the teams trying are Dallas, San Fran, Chicago & Denver to mention just a few. Miami can be one of those teams. They have the opportunity and the chips in the game to become a "Once Great" Multiple Superbowl team that has a long and proud history of success. But that has been derailed with one coaching change after another started by chasing Jimmy Johnson instead of keeping Shula and the 95 Team that was very close and could have won it all by 1999. This will be the off season that determines that. Not trying to be overly dramatic, you just don't get 5 picks in the top 100 too often, and you don't get a chance to start it off with Fresh solid minded coaching, a promising rookie QB and a deep pocketed owner who want to win and is willing to pay to do it. Polian can make that happen... he has proven i more than once... I'm not certain if Ireland can or not, Until Ross makes that determination, nothing will happen in FA or contracts until it does.

OK some of you on here make following pro football somewhat of an obsessive hobby. You purchase several draft guides yearly and probably suscribe to one or more.I dont know as I dont purchase any,I watch the games on television and have been since Joe Kapp was the QB of the Vikings that lost the super bowl.

This is a competetive business with ONLY 32 FRANCHISES.Everybody wants to be at the top but it is impossible. The Dolphins unfortunately are closer to the bottom than the top IMO.This year is perfect for a wholesale change in personal I hope they take this opportunity and run with it.

What did Odin Give Oscar For His Birthday?

A ONE MAN BUKKAKE SHOW!!!

THAT'S 2 Days In a Row U Have Been OWNED BY Kris And Then Odin!!

AND WE ALL KNOW U DON'T HAVE THE DASHI'S NUMBER!!

Not With My Gift Of Gab!

It's Profane! How Cordial Dashi is With the The English Vernacular!

Polians are losers. What did they do? It is obvious Peyton carried the whole team on his shoulders. They didn't even have a plan for back up qb even though Peyton was well into his 30's.

Peyton made the Colts win just like he is making the Broncos win.

dashi says he never offends anybody but then tells people to swallow his load. it's easy to see how he and krissy and odinrot stick together like the three mousekateers.

oscar is light years ahead of you buffoons. he doesn't even feel the need to respond to your infantile gibberish.

4-9 get ready

Miguel!

Dashi has Never Said To SWALLOW!!

OLD SCHOOL! THE REAL OLD SCHOOL!

When will Armando ban the Idiot Odin and the handicap Douchi?, When armando, When.

King... I agree that at this current time, Miami is closer to the bottom then the top. However, History, as much as the current culture has tried to discount or rewrite it... is the judge of all things.
Miami is one of the most winning franchises in the NFL. They share that position wit Dallas, Pittsburgh and Chicago. Given they're recent poor performances, it is clear just how good/great this franchise has been for most of its existence. History say's Miami is a successful Franchise. They have the wins and hardware to prove it. However, this is a "Whatcha done 4 me lately" society we live in. And (perhaps rightfully so) one can only judge the book by its current cover.
I'm uncertain if the "Draft guides" comment was meant for me (It's not really important)... but I can imagine far more obsessive/compulsive preoccupations then following professional football or NCAA players heading towards the Draft. Just a few that pop to mind (and I am not directing these at any one or more person/s)...
... Obsessively arguing with people on the internet because they don't think or believe as you...
... Insistently correcting spelling or grammar of those who take the time to post actual idea's...
... Ritualistically seeking an issue to disagree and banter about, rather then finding common ground and and thereby creating a interesting, challenging environment of conversation and the sharing of idea's...
... Childishly descending into "Tit for Tat" jousting matches over issues you disagree with someone about because your ego cannot manage the thought someone thinks your wrong...
... And my personal favorite, lowering oneself to name calling and challenging someone to "Meet me somewhere" in some ball-less keyboard badazzz championship of ego's...

I suppose we are all capable of one or more of the above... I do, however, believe some have made it they're "Obsession".... which IS sort of ironic, Coming to a Miami Herald Blog that focuses on the NFL Franchise of the Miami Dolphins and everything concerning them. When one considers how many different blogs there are for shouting matches, politics, sex talk, auto discussion, Right Wing and Left wing politics. Boxing, Full Contact, NHL. NBL. MLB and ALL THE OTHERS to go talk about what one wants.... Coming to a Dolphins Blog and finding someone to be "Compulsive" about Football to me is............... Disturbingly Unique.......

I do hope Miami makes the right choices however.... Me and My 42 years of season tickets is tired of losing......

You may as well climb aboard your robot mules and eat candy canes in Uzbekistan.

May Freddie Mercury anoint you in His healing oils.

wow, lol. like that is a huge difference. be in denial like your sweety krissy. force yourself to believe what you want. never underestimate what others think, they are smarter than you realize. the gang of scuz has only 3 members and it looks like they never have any fun. lol.

Miguel, I wonder if Aloco will use "The gang of scuz" to introduce his new list.

Vetran fan very long post not bad.The statement about draft guides is because everybody has a point of view I prefer to form my own opinions and not regurgle those that are in the BUSINESS of making draft guides.Listen if drafting players was that easy there wouldnt be so many differing opinions. My opinions is that you are hiring human beings and you can check their time in the 40 their vertical leap their intelligence test results, but only history will tell if they were qualified to play in the NFL.I believe the majority of the players coming out of college can play in the NFL on a physical level it is THE INTANGIBLES THAT SEPARATE THEM,and there is NO WAY TO MEASURE THE INTANGIBLE QUALITIES OF A HUMAN BEING as it relates to being a productive NFL player.

TRUTH BE TOLD

Everytime Bill Polian's name comes up as gm, I ask myself why? The guy's burnt out. Proof of that is he was grooming his son to take over in Indy. Even if you say his son could do better job than Ireland. What track record is that based on? Lineage? lineage doesnt win games.

So, if Bill Polian groomed his son to take over after a year, and you could pretty assume Polian wont stay active on the job for more than a year. Then we're right back to where we started with Ireland. Once again a total green horne with no prior gm running the show.

Sure, based on overall production, I would like to see Ireland gone too. However, last I checked, great gm's arent exactly falling from the trees.

Oscar,

I Mean Miguel! Ur Not Even Worth Responding To!

REGURGITATING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER!!

TRYING TO SKEW MY WORDS! TO NO AVAIL!

-------------------------------------------------------

@4:18! Veteran Fan

GREAT POINTS!!

Problem IS They Won't Listen!!

The 3 Stooges!! Thanks for Clarifying, Miguel! IT's 3! Not 2! Don't EVEN TALK FOOTBALL!!

They Obsess About The Other Posters!! Here!! And Now IT Seems To Me that His Psychotic Behavior!! Has Taken a Liking To Dashi!!!

YB, ONLY LAST MONTH YOU WERE SAYING IRELAND MIGHT HAVE IT RIGHT AFTER ALL
YOU FLIP-FLOP AGAIN
HAVE YOU AND KRIS MR 11 AND 5 HAVE ANY SHAME?
(BUFFET OF GOODNESS)

As far as the history of the Dolphins IMO there were two golden periods. The Don Shula era and the Dan Marino era.Simple right.

Bill Parcells came in and groomed Ireland for 2yrs. Polian would probably come in and groom his son 2yrs max.

IMO, basically that gives us the exact same situation we had beginning in 2008. Then what if the elder or younger Polians decide to go a total different direction with hc? What if 5yrs later we're talking replacing the younger Polian too?

IMO, replacing a in the beginning inexperienced gm, with another in the beginning inexperienced gm, is pure insanity. Insanity is described as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Armando, what goods a burner when we dont have a QB. Are they stuoid enough to repeat the Brandon Marshall deal? Get a franchise QB, then get a top WR.

HOHO! I just woke up and saw my comments on, from odin and xPersonalities up to pink pussssies. Very interesting were they.

Im so glad this game will be blacked out and wont be watched by so fla. Seahawks 41 Dulfins 6. This is gonna be real ugly....

ALoco,

NO ONE WILL EVER ACCUSE YOU OF ANYTHING HERE EXCEPT BEING THE KING OF GARBLE. YOU WAIT FOR A THING TO GO WRONG THEN ENDLESSLY OBSSESS OVER IN MANGLED GARBLED 11YR OLD'S BUTCHERED QUEENS ENGLISH.

THE DISHMACHINE AWAITS FOR ONE MORE DAY.

((BUFFET OF WASH AND RINSE CYCLES))

The 95 Dolphins proved that going wild in free agency is almost always a TERRIBLE idea.

No Miami team ever had less character. No Miami team ever played with less passion or desire. They were woeful underachievers and that team ultimately cost Don Shula his job.

And for the record, I love this convenient amnesia some get about the end of Shula's coaching days. Virtually the ENTIRE fanbase was howling for Jimmy--and they got what they wanted.

Sorry, not buying the revisionist history.

ALoco,

THE ONLY TIME YOU REMOTELY TALK FOOTBALL IS WHEN YOU AGREE WITH A GREAT POST ANOTHER POSTER MADE.

((BUFFET OF PARROTIC INTELLECTUALISM))

This game should be blacked out. 15,000 fans would look very embarrassing.

Dashi are you still here?

So? I'll listen to the Game on the Radio. I wouldn't go to that Stadium if they gave me the Tickets for free. I don't like carrying Telescopes around.

FLIPPER, YOU ARE A GREAT POSTER, YOU GIVE BOTH SIDES OF THE STORY.ALWAYS AGREEING THEN DISAGREEING.
THAT MAKES YOU A FLP-FLOPER.

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Oh, yes. We influenced many Games at the OB. We were right there on top of everybody on the Field observing and shouting them down.

OSCAR IS ITBECAUSE YOUR SO OLD YOU CANT SEE?
THEY INENTED THESE THINGS CALLED GLASSES.

(BUFFET OF NOWLEDGE)

Oscar, do you agree that the children's classic "Winnie the Pooh" should be renamed "Winnie the Bowel Movement?"

I don't mess around with Children and their stuff, ALoco. They are precious.

A QB makes the recievers better, not the other way around. How often do you see a dynamic receiver with a mediocre QB? Not to often, but how many times do you see a receiver look good because they have a real good QB? Plenty. If you think a real good receiver is all of a sudden going to make Tannehill a great QB, then you all are drinking the wrong Kool Aid. Just look around the league and how many great receivers are making their QB's look good? How bad did the Colts receiver look last year? C'mon folks its so simple! Mando you should know better!

Sure, based on overall production, I would like to see Ireland gone too. However, last I checked, great gm's arent exactly falling from the trees.

Posted by: Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | November 23, 2012 at 04:55 PM

that is it right there. the chances are higher you'd get a worse gm to replace ireland than a better one.

FAIL FORWARD FAST!!!

I'VE BEEN SAYING IT ALL YEAR AND WILL CONTINUE TO SAY IT THE GUY THE DOLPHINS NEED TO TURN THINGS AROUND IMMEDIATELY IS MIKE WALLACE! GO GET HIM! HE IS WORTH IT IN THAT HE MAKES DEFENDING THE DOLPHINS CHANGE. HE OPENS UP EVERYTHING FOR ALL OTHER RECEIVERS! THE OTHER PLAYER WHO WILL CHANGE THINGS FOR DOLPHINS IS T'EO FROM NOTRE DAME! HE WILL GIVE THE DOLPHIN DEFENSE THE EXTRA PUSH THEY NEED TO BE A TOP 5 DEFENSE! HE PLAYS BOTH THE RUN AND THE PASS VERY WELL AND HE CAN COVER! WITH STARKS AND SOLAI PROTECTING HIM AND JONES AT SS THE DOLPHINS WILL BE STOUT IN THE MIDDLE! 3RD SIGN A GOOD FA COVER CORNER OR FA PASS RUSHER TO HELP WAKE! DRAFT THE OPPOSITE! THIS MAKES IT WHERE ROOKIES CAN SHINE BECAUSE THEY WON'T HAVE THE PRESSURE OF STEPPING IN AND BEING THE GUY, THEY CAN PROVE THERE WORTH! IF SUCCESSFUL THAN GREAT! IF NOT THAN IT DOESN'T TAKE THE TEAM BACKWARDS! WE DO NOT NEED A QB WE NEED WEAPONS AND TO PUT DANSBY TO THE OUTSIDE! YES WE NEED CB BUT A GOOD PASS RUSHER WILL HELP GUYS LIKE CARROLL AND WILSON(AT SAFETY) PRODUCE MORE WITH THE EXPERIENCE THEY ARE GAINING THIS YEAR! BUT THE KEY IS MIKE WALLACE! WE HAVE NEVER MADE THE PLAYOFFS WITHOUT A BURNER ON THE OUTSIDE! NEVER! WARFIELD! DUPER! HARRIS, AND EVEN GINN!

fan for 40yrs heres my plan. RD1 OG Warmack, make opponents respect the run and the passing game will loosen up. Our 2nd pick. Banks CB Carroll and marshall our starters? if we lose Smith? Our 2nd rd from Indy. Travon Austin WR he'l be a matchup nightmare and can take it the distance every play. Our 3rd rd pick Corderel Patterson or hopkinsWR both play in the sec as the 2nd WR on the team and most experts will tell you each is better than jason hunter and hopkins is second in yardage. anbd our 3rd from Chi TE reed from fla. a aaron hernadez clone. then we'd have a better run game, depth at cb and playmakers everywhere.

wallace is one dimensional. he looks great on the steelers with that offense and big ben, how would he look on our team? average at best.

remember he couldn't even get any offers when he wanted them, because no other gm values him as highly as he does. not one.

How bout them Jets! Bwaahahaha

Wallace? Last thing this team needs is more dumb cooons.
