'Everyone in the building' knows Dolphins need a burner

Rishard Matthews is going to have his playing time increase dramatically the rest of the season if things go according to plan. Earlier this week when the Dolphins cut Jabar Gaffney, they did so because they weren't thrilled with the veteran and because they have seen Matthews steadily improving in practice and deserving more playing time.

Gaffney was standing in the way of that playing time. So ...

Bye-bye.

That means the Dolphins have four wide receivers on the roster: Brian Hartline, Davone Bess, Rishard Matthews and Marlon Moore.

And that seems good to coach Joe Philbin.

"I like the guys that we have right now,” Philbin said.

Great. But Philbin is either stretching the truth or totally alone on this one because I am told "everyone in the building" at the Dolphins facility is aware the Dolphins need to add a dynamic speed receiver or two this offseason.

And that is what Miami fully intends to do somehow -- via the draft, free agency or kidnapping.

The Dolphins currently have what is commonly being termed as a red zone offense. That, by the way, is not a good thing.

A red zone offense is a unit that basically operates inside a 20- to 30-yard span of field throughout the entire field. In other words, the club doesn't have players that consistently threaten to go 70 yards for a score. The Dolphins offense doesn't have a receiver that scares the defense,

The Dolphins believe they need a receiver that a) forces the defense to game plan for that receiver and b) forces the secondary to back up because that receiver can blow the top off the defense.

Pittsburgh's Mike Wallace comes to mind.

I'm not saying the Dolphins will go after Wallace in free agency. I'm saying the team needs someone that does what Wallace is capable of doing.

Hartline, a good No. 2 wideout, is not that guy. Neither is Bess, although he's a good slot guy. Both are solid. Both have value. But both are complementary to a Wallace-type.

The ironic thing is the Dolphins have been in need of this kind of player for years. And they've been trying to some small degree to land this kind of player -- thus the drafting of Ted Ginn by Randy Mueller and Clyde Gates by Jeff Ireland.

But neither Patrick Turner nor Brandon Marshall nor several of the other wide receiver fixes the Dolphins tried to make aside from adding Ginn and Gates were flyers that made defenses respect the entire field rather than just worry about a 20 to 30 yard swath.

Ironic, isn't it? Fans have been begging for a speed receiver for a long time. But the Dolphins haven't really had a good one since Irving Fryar. That was the mid 1990s. (Hand it to Don Shula! He had Mark Duper and when Duper declined, he traded for Fryar. He also had a guy named Paul Warfield.)

But everyone not named Shula has missed on getting a bigtime deep threat.

Jimmy Johnson once famously said "separation is over-rated" by a wide receiver. The Dolphins went to big, physical but not really fast wide receivers such as Marshall and Oronde Gadsen. And even O.J. McDuffie, a possession receiver, led the team in catches.

Nothing wrong with that.

But today's game is not three-yards and a cloud of dust. It's not even 15-yards and a first down. Today's game is 49-yards over the top and touchdown!

The Dolphins apparently have come to the realization, from what I'm told. They need a productive burner on the outside.

They need to upgrade.

ONCE AGAIN THERE IS THIS OLD ADAGE THAT SUCCESS IS ONLY THRU THE DRAFT! YES AND NO! WITH THIS SPREAD OFFENSE BULL CRAP IT IS HARDER TO REALLY JUDGE OFFENSIVE TALENT LIKE IT WAS IN THE PAST. THE REASON WALLACE IS A PERFECT FIT FOR THE DOLPHINS IS HIS ABILITY TO DO WHAT IS NEEDED IN THIS OFFENSE! FOOTBALL HAS CHANGED AND IF YOU CANNOT SCORE 3-4 TOUCHDOWNS A GAME YOU WILL NOT WIN! TEAMS WOULD HAVE A VERY HARD TIME TRYING TO STOP WALLACE AND HARTLINE AND BESS! THERE ARE NO YOUNG BURNERS IN COLLEGE NOW WITH THE EXPERIENCE SKILL TO CHANGE DEFENSES! NAME ONE ROOKIE DEEP THREAT IN THE LEAGUE! LOT OF GOOD YOUNG RECEIVERS BUT NO DEEP THREAT! GREG JENNINGS DOES NOT HELP! HIS BODY IS WEARING DOWN! BOWE IS NOT A BURNER AND WILL BE EXACTLY WHAT WE ALREADY HAVE! THE INABILITY TO STRETCH THE FIELD! FOR THE DOLPHINS TO WIN NOW THE NEED MIKE WALLACE! GET HIM BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY AND THIS TEAM WILL WIN 10-GAMES NEXT YEAR WITH THE ADDED OTHER PIECES(RESIGN STARKS,SMITH, DRAFT A GOOD COVER CORNER,SIGN A PASS RUSHER, AND IF POSSIBLE DRAFT T'EO) SUCCESS IS FROM BOTH THE DRAFT AND GOOD FA SIGNINGS!

The Fins have a OK Group of WR. Really they have 2! And let's hope Matthews can develop into a 3rd Option! We Need 1 More Dynamic Guy! Whether its Wallace! OrSthe fins spend Less! And Go After Jennings! Or some Other Young Free Agent! Usually 3-4 Come Out A Year! Isn't Victor Cruz suppose to be a FA? Or get a Veteran Veteran like The Real Steve Smith?

The BEST OPTION At WR! This Year is in Free Agency!

If we go OG!! In The First Round! Next Draft!! I will make it my personal Duty!! To Spot Ireland Out Every Home Game! And Heckle Him!!

Make a Shirt With Ireland's Face!! With The Words "Got Balls?" Underneath!!

Yes! A Guard or 2 will be Nice! But we have Bigger Needs! On Off. And Def.

And the O-Line Coach Knows what he is doing! Notice not a lot of playing around with the line!! He found the 5 best Linemen on the roster and has them Playing! Almost From Day 1!! He Developed Texas A&M O-Line for Sherm! Has done a Good Job with what he has!!

Give him Some mid round picks! Or Young Free Agents which Fit The Zone Blocking Scheme!! Jerry and Incognito!! Will Never Play on a Shanahan O-Line!! Way To DUMB AND SLOW!! The Guards Need To Be Close To 300lbs! Not WEIGHT UNLISTED!! They need to be able to move!! Pull!! Finesse!! Jake Long Is The Tallest Starter at 6'7" but he weighs less than Jerry and Incognito! Who are Both 6'4" and Under! PROBLEM!!

Terry King Has the Right Idea! Until he mentioned Dansby! We have about 4-5 holes on Defense!! And Only 1 REAL HOLE!! On Offense! Simple to me!! And More than Likely we will get the WR! In Free Agency This Year! With The Fins Drafting one the following Draft!!

Terry, didn't you learn how to make a paragraph in 4th grade? Or did you not get that far.

Nobody is reading your long posts, all in caps, beyond the first sentence. Nobody.

No Armando, Hartline and Bess arent merely "solid" players with value.Hartline runs a 4.5 40 and although this isnt blazing its fast enough. He has excellent hands and is outstanding working the sidelines. He CAN get deep.Bess is one of the top slot receivers in the league. If a potential Calvin Johnson or Randy Moss type is available then sure you want to take a shot but otherwise you already have a true number one receiver on your roster in the person of Brian Hartline. What we really need is to get our running game going again.

THEN THE PLAN IS WORKING SINCE YOU HAD TO READ MY LONG POSTS IN ORDER TO CRITIQUE THEM! OR DO YOU KNOW WHAT CRITIQUE MEANS" D..K BRAIN! THE POINT IS TO EXPRESS HOW WE FILL ABOUT THE DOLPHINS AND THE DIRECTION WE THINK THE TEAM IS GOING OR SHOULD GO NOT WHETHER YOU'RE A DUMB ASS LIKE YOURSELF! THIS IS ABOUT THE DOLPHINS NOT YOU AND YOUR 4TH GRADE DEGREE!

Terry Berry Brain,

4th graders write better than you. You can't even separate your thoughts in paragraphs to make your writing more legible. Who writes in all caps besides mentally retarded people or old people who can't see?

I may have read two sentences, which menas most read only one, or none.

Terry is a perfect example of the degradation of society.

Some of U can't let Ur Ireland Hate GO!!

BUT U DO KNOW IF HE SUCCEEDS!! THIS WILL BE HIS LEGACY!! HIS START IS MAKING THE DOLPHINS GREAT AGAIN!! NOT LOSING 4 Super Bowls!!

To Dashi That Means More!! Than Having A Guy with 40 Years in the Business and Only 1 SB WIN!!

Ireland is The Miami Dolphins!! The Fins Made Ireland!!!

Us Winning With Ireland!! Will Actually Look Better! Than Having Polian Do Nothing!

If U can't See This Team is In The Best Position it's been in years!! U are blinded by hate!! Ireland has almost gotten rid of all the Bad Contracts!! And Has A Young Nucleus Of Players!! With 5 Picks In The Top 80!! Remember the 32nd Pick of Round 3! Is Pick #96!! And Dashi Doesn't see The Colts! Having a TOP 10 RECORD!! Meaning The Fins Last Pick Should be in the Mid 80's!! With 4 in the Top 75!!

AND IRELAND HAS GOTTEN BETTER EVERY YEAR!! WITH HIS DRAFTING!! MEANING HE LEARNS FROM HIS MISTAKES!! NOT A BAD THING!! FOR A GM!!

Again! The Fins Only have 2 Players that Were here 5 Years Ago! The Other 51 Have Been Replaced!!

Terry proves that the vast majority of football fans are pretty close to brain dead.

Unless they start playin better this group does not win as a team for whatever combination of reasons. There are definitely good players but their combined abilities dont win games.I think its time for a major overhaul for the players now on this team. The coaches are new but the reasults are the same at least so far.

Troll!!

U ever wonder! That Terry King! Is What Veteran Fan was Talking about! A Little while back!

Ur CONSTANT!! NEED! TO CORRECT!! EVERYONE!!!

U Fit The ProtoType!! Of The Word Troll!!

Hi there Dashi!

FIRST OF ALL MOST 4TH GRADE STUDENTS CAN SPELL THE WORD "MEANS". LOOKS LIKE YOU HAD TO BUY YOUR 4TH GRADE EDUCATION, YOU HATE FOOTBALL PLAYERS, FANS, AND ANYONE WHO WITH AN OPINION ABOUT A SUBJECT. SINCE YOU CANNOT SPELL THE WORD "MEANS" THAT MUST "MEAN" YOU ARE A DUMB ASS ANGRY "PECKER HEAD" WHO KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT ANYTHING EXCEPT DATING HIS SISTER. OH! I MEAN BROTHER SINCE YOU ARE THE BEST SOCIETY HAS TO OFFER. THAT"MEANS" YOU ARE EXCEPTIONAL IN YOUR PURSUIT IN GETTING YOUR ASS DONE PROPERLY! YOU LIKE TO START SH..T CAUSE YOU LOVE SH..T! YOUR THE BEST SOCIETY HAS TO OFFER. SH..T! GREAT TELL YOUR WIFE/SISTER I SAID HELLO AND I'M A FOOTBALL FAN WHO DO NOT MARRY HIS SISTER ! GO DOLPHINS PRAY FOR THIS MORON! THAT "MEANS" YOU HARDY!

U Fit The ProtoType!! Of The Word Troll!!

I guess writing You instead of U is a bit too much for you. You can't spell anyway so it doesn't matter.

You fit the prototype of just one more totally ignorant blogger wtih a high school lockerroom mentality.

Your delusional to think that Bess and Hartline are top receivers in the league. Hartline may run a 4.5 40 but he is slow coming out of his breaks and does not create alot of separation. Bess and Hartline would be the 4th and 5th receivers on the good offensive teams in the NFL. Teams do not have any fear of the Dolphins past 10 yards. They can take away the short passes and running game. They have seen the film and figured out what the Dolphins can or can not do offensively. The lack of receiver quickness is a major issue with the Dolphins. The current lack of ablility to run the ball is a direct result of the limitations in the Miami passing attack.

promichael

I guarantee you if Hartline was on the Saints or Packers or Pats you'd be begging to trade for him. Not even Fitzgerald would look like a #1 on this team.

Yesterday's Gone says:

Sure, based on overall production, I would like to see Ireland gone too. However, last I checked, great gm's arent exactly falling from the trees.
======================================================
In my opinion even though Ireland should be fired. He will not lose his GM job. However I hope that Ross has the good sense not to allow Ireland to have final say with 5 draft picks in the first three rounds. Ireland has shown the same lack of ability in selecting skill position players as his mentor dinosaur Bill Parcells.

promichael

I don't know why so many of you think Ireland lives in a Parcells sealed plastic bag. He doesn't. He is well aware what is working around the league and what isn't.

Also I don't understand why so many of you think he works in private with no input from the coaches. He has shown he wants to work with them and not against them, because that is a recipe for failure.

It's odd you home gamers don't realize this and think you are more observant than he.

keanon allen(cal.)woods(usc) or even patterson or hunter in tenn. any one of these guys can can fly and stretch the D. all these guys will be available in the 2013 draft. there is no need to spend a ton on a FA reciever because wallace is going to be expensive and we would be wasting money on bowe. forget victor cruz(FA) because he will stay with a super bowl team instead of heading to south beach. we have enough picks to cover most of our areas of concern.

That's all for me...sayonara.

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE TIRED OF THE LOSING! HELP MAKE THE CHANGE! STOP BUYING A TERRIBLE PRODUCT!

Fine and dandy Armando. Everyone knows thats what the Fins need to add but a receiver like the one you're describing is extremely difficult to find, and I SERIOUSLY doubt that Ireland will find him. Besides that even if they luckily find that receiver, are we sold on Tannehill yet? Is he really franchise material? Oh and by the way, what about this swiss cheese defense that gives up record breaking yards and plays almost every game?

Dumb and Dumber. Trading Brandon Marshall and being scared to go after Plaxico. Are we a team of nuns and Priests. So what, Brandon Marshall had a big mouth. Nothing compares to the dumbest man on the planet Chad Ocho Cinco. The Nfl has a policy against domestic violence . This is why Chad will never play again. He had the chance of a lifetime to resurrect his career here with the Dolphins. I think Rishard Matthews will show what he has got over the next 6 games. Other than that- keep it si mple and draft a speed burner and make Dwaye Bowe an offer if he is still available. The Dolphins have a few more years to go. I also think that Tannehill is good and will never never be great.

For all you guys that are prematurely dreaming and already thinking of players the Fins should draft- do not forget that they have a bunch of veteran players that will need new contracts. Some worth keeping, most not.

Hardy, read the post again. I'm hoping that the owner and the entire regime can work together not to make the same mistakes in following the Bill Parcells way of doing things. I remember Ireland indicating while Parcells was still his boss that the Dolphins would choose big player. What they chose were big slow players in the early rounds when other very athletic players were still available. If you do not understand how influenced Ireland was by Parcells with his draft picks, which were similar to what Parcells had done during his position as VP of operations. Then your a blow hard idiot.

Sparano has ruined the Jets. Sparano does not belong in the NFL. He is a division II Coach and im being serious. I guarantee he will be fired.

Clearly, Ireland is lost without Parcells. He should've been fired 3 years ago.

Ross, save the Dolphins. SELL THE TEAM TO SOMEONE WITH A CLUE.

For all you guys that are prematurely dreaming and already thinking of players the Fins should draft- do not forget that they have a bunch of veteran players that will need new contracts. Some worth keeping, most not.

MARLENS DID THE RIGHT THING,THEY GOT RID OF A BUNCH OF MILLIONARES THAT FINNISHED LAST, THE DROOPYDOG OWNER SHOULD DOTHE SAME,GET RID OF
ARAGE MACHANIC 2 MILLION
DANSBY 55 MILLIOn
FASANO 3 MILLION
BESS 1.3 MILLION
BUSH 4 MILLION
WAKE 57 DOLLARS A GAME

THATS HOW THEY GET BETTER,YOU CAN LOSE WITH LESS MONEY.

(BUFFET OF GOODNESS)

Tannehill is the worst starting QB in football. Henne was better. Opposing D's just play the run knowing Tannehill cant pass.

I have no life. I hope I die soon.

The dulphins could have jerry rice, mark duper, mark clayton, randy moss, mchael irvin, on and on and still would not win with hennehill at qb. How many times is this clown going to throw a pick and people say the wr ran the wrong route or whatever the case may be. Bottomline it's a qb driven league!

Are there any neega lovers out there? It's Friday night and my hand is tired.

Sanchez at his worst is better than hennehill. Rex is a real coach, Philbin is a nobody assistant.

77,,,,,,,,,, GO TO SLEEP ....

TO

OR
NOT
TO BE ..........

Lots of complaints with Tannehill starting. Thats because he makes the players around him worse. Very few complaints when MVP Moore is playing. He makes those around him better. Thats the difference between good and bad QBs.

10 games into the season and not a single person is mentioning him as a pro bowler. So why did we waste a #8 pick? Dumb.

LOVE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE CRAPPY FOOTBALL.....

If everyone is complaining(including Philbin) about every position when Tannehill plays, then why not switch to Moore? Make sense?

I for one am not campaigning Polian for GM. What I am saying rather is the lack of movement from Dawn Aponte (The chick with the checks) when so many in team FA contracts are in question is a tell that Ross is not taking action until he is certain moving forward of Miami Direction.
I agree that Marty Schottenheimer is another possible replacement. I'm not even ready (as my post before eluded to) to place blame 100% at Jeff Ireland's door. The man has made some strong moves. NOT addressing offensive passing game players was neglected and has cost this team dearly this year.
I very respectfully disagree with "dolffinman" about a supporting cast making a QB better. I would say just from listening that most of the NFL's leading analysts would also disagree given how many times over how many years they have shown and eluded to a young QB having weapons to choose from.
I hope that as I have seen on this blog that simply disagreeing will not be a launching pad for those who cannot deal with that and start calling names... But there ya go... I disagree.
Place a guy who can stretch the field out there who is comfortable with T-Hill and teams will have to drop that strong safety off the line. It is that safety playing up while man to man press kills our two receivers that crunches our running game, even if the O-Line gets to the second level; of blocking the safety is right there at level 3 to stuff the play. In passing situations it leads to 8 or 9 guys rushing every time. That means the TE AND RB must stay in to block, leaving 2 WRs to try and get open while T-Hill tries to not get sacked.
This team needs weapons teams respect. Players who MUST be accounted for. Until that happens, they will overload the box, play man to man tight Coverage with a FS over the top who snags tipped balls, and then outscores you on both sides of the ball because your defense is used up by half time..... In 2013 Miami has a chance to stack O-Weapons that will allow the team to score... Scoring is what the regular season is about. Then play defense in the post season. Simple stuff when you have the right guys... Just ask Belechick and Harbaugh.

Put Pat Devlin in there. Right now he's our best QB.

Clearly Home seems to pick better players from his desk chair than Ireland could ever pick.
Home is also spot on on Ireland's 2012 NFL draft picks earning only a grade of a "D".

Tannehill = hype & hope. over drafted. Inaccuracy and issues closing out and winning games. average at best and probably below average NFL quarterback.

Martin = Too weak. below average. liability at right tackle or left tackle. not a good pick for a high number 2

Egnew = Bust and laughing stock of the NFL for trade compensation for elite WR Brandon Marshall

Did not address areas on need for this team this season and will continue his with another losing season. Five losing seasons in a row.
If not for after FA and the draft,Chad Pennington- Jets quarterback falling in our lap, then every season a losing season with Ireland.

Boycott the team,until Fireland!

It is true that Ireland hasn't hit on a big playmaker. The only one, Brandon Marshall was traded away.

Miami 14 Seattle 10

NOTHING seems to work in Miami, FL(even less in Little Havana and much less in Hialeah). It's the backwardness, the lack of Education.

Interesting decision by Jim Harbaugh this coming Game. Both Alex Smith and Kaepernick are probable. Hmm..

Remember, the immigration to NCY was composed mostly of Jews, Italians, Irish which had gotten a good primary Education in Europe. In Miami, FL, apart form the Cubans of the 60's and the Venezuelans now, the immigrations here are composed of very uneducated(or non-educated) impoverished People. What can we expect?

LV has Seattle winning by 3. Not a big margin to overcome if we play very well.

Hardy Says:

======================================================
Hardy,

be more substantive, Hartline can not create separation due to a lack of quickness coming out of his breaks. I have watched him in person verses Wes Welker. Welker begins to separate as soon as he is out of his move or break. That is the difference. The 40 is not the best way to test receiver speed. There are other tests at the combine that measure that for the scouts. Ted Ginn, Hartline's teamate at Ohio State was much faster in the 40 but had the same slowness out of the breaks and lack of quick acceleration. That's why Ginn's value is that of a kick return guy instead of a receiver. The scouts and coaches know this and now so do you.

fins need someone like wes welker...oh wait, they had him but traded him to NE

Here, promichael, the same that happens to slow breaking recivers happens to very tall and big CBs(hint, hint for this week).

We are a bad team that can't seem to stay on track with what we want to be as far as personel hopefully we can stay on target this time around patience in a virtue

We must I repeat must sign some talent in free agency and say goodbye to under performers that remain on this roster hint Sean smith Chris Clemons Reggie bush jake long

As bad as the jets are I fear we are worse I don't look forward to playing the patriots twice in the upcoming weeks I fear we will look like a pee wee pop Warner team

How about trading for a top receiver like Da Beast?

I cant recall the Dolphins EVER having a worse starting QB then Tannehill. The guy cant move the ball and the only 1st downs we get are on penalties.

Ireland has never in his life drafted even a decent playmaker. How does he still have a job?

AGREED,... But, we been saying this for quite a while. It def should be #1 priority, followed by many other priorities:
2) A shut down corner & a #2 Corner
3) Pass Rusher opposite Wake
4) Pass Catching T.E
5) Offensive Guard ....and finally,
A KICKER!!
....oh, and either John Gruden or Bill Cowher

IMO drafting players isnt anything close to what could be considered absolute. All the measurements and combine tests could be positive and the player still could be a bust.Intangibles such as drive to succed willingness to learn and the will to become a pro football player will never be able to be evaluated.
