Four solutions for a struggling running game: (Titans D is one)

The Tennessee Titans are 30th in the NFL against the run. They are a dam with a lot of leaks, folks.

So it stands to reason that this week presents a wonderful opportunity for the Dolphins to get their limping running game -- which hasn't really stepped up recently after a fast start -- to get going again.

If the Dolphins cannot run up the yardage against the Titans, I would not expect them to do so against teams such as San Francisco (No. 5 against the run) or New England (No. 7) later this year. I would say that the first few games were something of a mirage and the truth is Miami's running game is mediocre.

But no one wants to come to that conclusion, least of all the Dolphins, so my understanding is the game plan is to run as much as Mike Sherman's pass-first orientation will allow. And my understanding is also that nothing much is expected to change with the Dolphins attack in that Reggie Bush is expected to get most of the carries and Daniel Thomas will get the rest.

So allow me to give three suggestions to improve the Miami running game -- not only this game but beyond.

1. Ask Ryan Tannehill to run more. Yes, Tannehill is just returning to health after being hobbled by a knee injury last week. But he is healthy. He is athletic, as the fact he played receiver in college proves. And he is fairly big and strong and fast (4.6s in the 40). Use that athleticism! Andrew Luck scored two rushing TDs last night. Robert Griffin III has an 80-yard run this year.

Coaches should make it plain to Tannehill that it is OK to run as long as the run finishes out of bounds or with a slide. Tannehill has not taken advantage of his running skills this year. He's run only 19 times for 24 yards (1.9 yard per rush average). It would be demoralizing to the defense to see the QB pick up first downs rushing the ball.

2. More Lamar Miller, please. I know that Miller isn't getting more playing time because the club is concerned about his blitz pickup and overall pass protection. He's also not 100 percent on his playbook.

But can't the Dolphins find three plays Miller knows and don't involve passing and put the kid in and let him explode? Miller was a 60-yard run waiting to happen in college. He leads all Miami runners with a 5.5 yard per carry average on 24 totes this year. He's explosive. He's a weapon. Give him a chance!

3. Throw in some Wildcat plays at people. Yeah, I know, I'm crazy. The Wildcat is very 2008. Nobody really runs it a ton anymore. But remember that Wildcat's purpose -- aside from surprising the opponent -- is to win a battle of numbers.

Simply, the Wildcat scheme puts as many blockers as defenders into the running play. It puts one more blocker into the play than the conventional running play. That's been one of the Dolphins' problem lately. Teams are stacking the tackle box with eight defenders to outnumber Miami at the line of scrimmage.

OK, then. Raise the stakes! Add a blocker. Let Reggie Bush run away from or Daniel Thomas run over somebody. Yes, it would put Tannehill at receiver for a play. Guess what? He's played WR in college. And as surprises go, this would be one, at least for a down or two.

cocoajoe,

Bush isnt the problem with the run game. Yes, he needs not look for the homerun evry carry. But either the hole's there or it isnt. None of the other rb's have been "consistently" successful as of late either.

Its more about what the defense is doing, 8-9 in the run box. Gaffney developing as the 3rd wr will help cure that. Clay needs to get far moreconsistent and we need Marlon Moore to become a reliable deep threat too.

Then defenses will began to play our run game honestly. Thats 6 in the run box, where we can get a hat on a hat. Then we can run for 150-200yds a game. Easily!

Dashi, I totally agree with you about religions they ARE the curse of our times, But God is not religion or religious, He is Holy, and there's a differense, But Christianity started with Christ (Christians) Constantine started catholic church and the Evil Popes right on until this Day. But don't be mad at God because man has changed and misinterprated his word into out right lies and falsehoods, God can't lie, Man lies all the time! Satan comes as the false messiah, BEFORE the return of our true bride "Jesus".

"You have a point but earlier in the year Bush seemed to be busting up thru the line more....line blocking better? And now, more dancing....looking for a non-existent block. Seems to me, hurt players or players that don't want to get hurt again will dance. And maybe that's what it is, he's not wanting to get hurt like A or B gap. Out in the open, he's pretty much fearless. Just looking for answers like everybody else."

Cocoa,

I wish I knew what the deal was--is it Bush or is it the O-line??? What I love about Miller is that there is no dancing. He's a pure north/south runner. I'd like to see Miller get some attempts on 1st & 2nd downs & keep Thomas in for pass protection on 3rd down.

Reggie started dancing once he got hit! In the Jets Game!

Started showing some flashes last game! But U can still see the coaches getting after him! For not running hard!

And Agreed with YG.

We need at least 3 legit Wr's! To take some of the pressure off the running game! Or 1 REAL Deep Threat!

And Fake Kris. Really!

Emmanual = God with us... right on oscar canosa

Nahh, you just trap them, deceive them. They are only Football Players, and in their majority, Dumb.

DD,

Uhhh..... Your 2nd half of the Colts game memory is failing you. We didnt go away from the run in the 2nd half. Circumstances forced it.

Incomplete passes forced 2nd-3rd and longs. Penalties on the oline, again forcing passing situations. Then mix in some situations where the Colts actually did a good job executing thier run defense.

The Colts ran 78 offensive plays to our 56 plays. That alone tells tale our defense couldnt get off of the field long enough to give the offense opportunity to run more plays. That alone means more opportunities to run the ball.

...IMO, last week if we would have kept running it, we would have had good numbers. we went away from it more then it was taken away. Also. The Colts didn't use a lot of 8-9 men in the box last week..that is just false. They would show this look pre snap, and then move into a different look. But to say that we were up against this last week is just not true. If you wnt to say that they countered with nickel when we were in 3-4 wide sets. Ok . But as far as stacking the box to stop the run..Nope. Way more 7 man fronts last week. and when they did indeed stack the box. Tannehill burned them..

"..So re-watching the game this is what struck me. I don't think that the Colts were the reason we didn't run the ball. In fact we ran it very efficiently in the first half. We just simply went away from it in half 2. Why? I'm not sure."

Daryl,

Exactly. It was working & that would have kept our defense off the field. By running the football the way we did in the first half we had the chance to wear down the Colts defense & we didn't.

I think Sherman has done a great job with this offense but we're not as balanced as we could be.

Dashi:

That was the real Kris before. I'm the fake Kris. Although I do agree your head is shaped like and is the size of a pin. Your skull too. (Wink)

I agree. Sherman wants to be pass heavey which is fine, but the Dolpins don't have the playmakers for that just yet. They have a great backfield, good OL, and good D. Run the ball first! Then let Tannehill pick them apart when they key on it.

..Yg. BS..I just rewatched the game..Counted the snaps in fats where we had positive gains on first down. We WENT AWAY FROM THE RUN..They did not force anything. In fact if we would have stuck witht the run perhaps it would have slowed them down a bit. Incredible.

Yes they ran more plays..But this has nothing to do with run pass rationm on our part. We did just fine in the first half running the ball. The game was never out of hand. We just did not execute the plays. Say what you want. This is how I saw it. If you want to interpret it different..That is fine.

To effectively run, a team needs to average around 4ypc. This gives you consistent 3rd and 2's or 3's.

You cant run the ball on the 1st two downs for a total of 5yds or less. Then face a steady diet of 3rd and longs. You wont win very many games in the nfl on offense doing this.

YG... look at the stats for the Colts game, both over 4ypc...

DD @ 2:57 PM,

Im sure you saw exactly what you wanted to see. Just like you think every player coming from Montana has the potential to be an nfl star.

CommonSense @ 2:58,

No reason to debate semantics. We dont run consistentlyefeectively simply because teams are stacking the run box and they have more guys attacking the ball than we have blocking for the ball carrier. Why over complicate simple basic math?

Thats why its so crucial to get Gaffney to become our 3rd reliable wr option. Until we make teams pay in the passing game for overstacking the box. The run game will suffer.

..Part of the problem, and if you understood my first post. We threw it on first down on about 80 percent of our first down opportunities. We were not efficient throwing it on first down for the amount of passes attempted. It

Daryl,

I'm not going to even touch on the performance of our secondary b/c if you re-watched like I did you're probably sick to your stomach BUT if we stuck with the run in the 2nd half, I think we would have broken the defenses' will & we certainly wouldn't have given Luck as many chances to light us up.

Mathis went out with an injury & outside of Antoine Bethea they're secondary is a mash unit. I honestly don't know what Sherman was thinking but he screwed up.

NICE TO SEE YG IS POSTING AGAIN...

Agree Daryl.

YG, they ran 16 times... someone before said what, 56 plays ran? so 40 pass to 16 run in a game they didn't trail until the 4th?

Balance is key. What I am getting from your post: They stack the box to stop the run because the pass isn't effect. Solution: pass more?

DD,

Neither of are oc's nor dc's. Did you ever imagine the Colts dc may have also made a halftime adjustment we thought we could better take advantage by passing more on 1st downs?

Maybe the Colts dc played 7-8 in the box on 1st downs in the1st half. Then in the 2nd half played 8-9 in the run box.

Its easy for us to say the this and that. But how can we truly critic when we fail to understand the why?

..Part of the problem, and if you understood my first post. We threw it on first down on about 80 percent of our first down opportunities. We were not efficient throwing it on first down for the amount of passes attempted. It

Daryl,

And I hate that strategy...Especially with only two reliable targets??? On first down I'd mix in the higher percentage passes like screens or quick slants to get guys with speed in space (which we don't do enough of) just to keep them off balance but I'd run the ball the majority of the time on 1st down.

If we're NOT going to run the ball more than we have AT LEAST get the ball into the hands of some guys who can make a play in the short passing game like Bush, Thomas, Lane, or even Marlon Moore.

Common Sense,

We threw the ball 38 times(just checked nfl.com). Even though we didnt trail until the 4th qtr. I would think that no fewer 15 of the 38 passing attempts came once we got behind.

"We threw the ball 38 times(just checked nfl.com). Even though we didnt trail until the 4th qtr. I would think that no fewer 15 of the 38 passing attempts came once we got behind."

YG,

Amazingly...We had the lead going into halftime--17-13 & we never trailed by more than 3 points in the 2nd half.

You make like we were down by multiple TD's.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN HISTORY????????

((THERE'S TOO MANY VERSION OF HISTORY,DEPENDS ON WHO WROTE IT )).........

DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL ?

YG4E Im back and here is the first paragraph unedited from wilkopedia,Its no wonder that I remember Bill Walsh as the architect of the WCO the 49ers kicked ass in the NFL for years one of their super bowl victims was the only super bowl appearance by Dan Marino where they were shellacked by SF.Here you are lets see the rebuttal because I hve a great memory I dont post BS.

In American football, "West Coast Offense" ("WCO") is a common term for an offense that places a greater emphasis on passing than on running.
There are two similar but distinct offensive-strategic-systems of play which are commonly referred to as "West Coast Offenses": (A) the Air Coryell system popularized by Don Coryell; or (B) more commonly the offensive system popularized by Bill Walsh characterized by short, horizontal passing routes in lieu of running plays to "stretch out" defenses, opening up the potential for long runs or long passes.

I am smoking on that gas!

KING SHULA,

ARE YOU SAYING , YOU KNOW FOOTBALL BETTER THAN YG ?

BTW YG4E I have heard of Sammy Baugh he was compared to Sonny Jurgensen QB of the G Allen coached Redskins. The football back in the 40s was not as oblong as today and it looked to be designed more for kicking than throwing.

ALoco Im saying he dosent know it better than me even though he might be older.

KING SHULA IS 345 YEARS OLD ,,,,,

KING,

I LOVE READING YOUR POSTS AND YG .I HOPE HE CAN RESPOND ,B/C THAT TEACHES ALL OF US NEW THINGS ABOUT FOOTBALL,AT LEAST BETTER THAN READING KRIS AND THE LIKE .

This just in.. breaking news from Armando.. Jake Long gets a haircut... Rumors are Carpenter cuts his hair as well.. more to come.

LOL. Good stuff Matty.

notice how every person accused of being a troll is Cuban? Racism?

lol thanks
anyone else off for Veterans Day?

No oscar i was accused of being a troll and im as caucasion persuasion

OSCAR,

NO THING WRONG OF BEING A CUBAN,I RESPECT YOU AND EVERY THING YOU REPRESENT ,I THOUGHT YOU WERE MEXICAN UNTIL NOW .

To tell you the truth I thought our running game looked better without bush in there. Other than his TD run of course.

game will be ugly. miami should win this one quite easily, titans are beyond awful

Dolphins-Titans = BORING

Of coarse YG comes with his alias of "ALoco", youve been exposed YG no need to log in with the name "ALoco" anymore.

ALoco TY for the thinkin like that but I dont think I can teach anyone anything you got to want to learn.YG4E might have subconiously felt angered when he laughed at me last weekend when I picked the Colts to win and he stated that the Phins would win by 7-10 points to which I replied I would take 8 points for 0 dollars on the Colts.

DJ, not as bored as the look on your girl's face when you're "trying" to give her the business. Stick to your own JETS blog where you belong.

Bill is exactly right, the Titans are a horrible team and WE. WILL. DESTROY. THEM! I can't wait!!!

My bad I meant to write 50 dollars

I also added not to try and out think the vegas computers that made the Dolphins 2 point favorites which in laymen terms means two closely matched teams on paper.

i heard the same garbage about running against the colts and we did nothing. I think it is more about the offense line the best runs are coming between center and left guard. that is one reason i think you are seeing less of bush and more of daniel. I too would like to see more of miller. i watch the last game where miller was protecting and when he was in, there was a sack but i believe it was Long fault as he took the inside guy and let the out side guy go around him miller was lined up on the right side too much distance for him to cover.

Ray Allen is lighting it up from beyond the arc, showing absolutely no need for time to adjust to South Beach. Chris Bosh has been an offensive stalwart, hitting mid-range jumpers with ease and still finding time to crash the boards and play inspired defense. Dwyane Wade looks healthy for once, and it's paying dividends.

In fact, the Heat have been so good that LeBron has been able to take a backseat and avoid going into "I'm the best player in the world, so I'm going to completely dominate this game for a few minutes" mode. It's not that he can't turn on that switch, but rather that he just doesn't need to.

That's a scary thought for the rest of the league. It's given players like Mario Chalmers an ability to play a more prominent role and truly start to develop.

lol I could not disagree more with this story.

1. "Ask Ryan Tannehill to run more. Yes, Tannehill is just returning to health after being hobbled by a knee injury last week. But he is healthy."

No IMO he's not healthy because everyone could see him limping a little bit during the game. He was definitely favoring the leg more toward the end which means, as is the norm, the bone bruise is still healing and there is probably still a little swelling after games and practices in the knee. Running him against the crappy Titans to prove we have a running game would be crazy. We need him healthy for the better teams we are about to face.

2. "But can't the Dolphins find three plays Miller knows and don't involve passing and put the kid in and let him explode?"

How is putting him on the field only when he's going to run the ball going to help the teams running game when the opponent will know Miller is going to run the ball? There is no chance for a pass with Miller on the field so the defense will be able to key on Miller. Why can't people understand how short sighted this is?! lol

3."Throw in some Wildcat plays at people."

Oh God no!!!!! Barffffffffffff! You have to be kidding. And who is our back who is the threat to throw the ball? If we don't have a back who can throw, the defense once again knows we are running and just keys on the qb/rb. Come on Mando! ;)

fins are up to 6 pt favs

Oscar, Dashi isn't Cuban. And I bet other than U 2!!! The other troll isn't Cuban either! (Included myself since Ya Love to say Dashi is a Troll)

Oscar?

Why does everything have to be a Cuban thing with U. U must be 1 of them old Cubans! Everyone else in Miami can't stand. Just Saying! And Even In the Cuban Population! U have a Divide! Between the Old School and The New School! It showed up in this election! And it's only going to get worst!

Notice U act like the Cuban KKK!!!!

If it's not Cuban it sucks!!! Get over urself! If ya had any Testicular Fortitude!!! U and another 82!!!! Will take back the Island!!! Just like he did! U know who!! The Bearded ONE!

One Name FOOL!

Maximo Gomez! U know ur HISTORY!!! LOOK IT UP!!! U GUYS WANTED HIM AS PRESIDENT AFTER LIBERATING CUBA FROM SPAIN! AND HE SAID NO!!!

Or U want Dashi to keep talking!

And A loco! The Beautiful thing about history! Is usually u get more than 1 Account of what happened! And Real History!!! Not Religious History! Is Mostly True!!!

What I'm saying is compare what the good book says! And the rules of the time!!! And Then U will get ur real answer!

Has anyone ever seen D Thomas break a tackle?
Me neither.

When the 70s came GB was not running against anyone but i get what you are saying. Miami and GB ran the ball so well is because they brought enough people in the box to block everyone back than you did not get 3-5 wide a lot. they would have two recievers fulback, te and line that is the resaon they were able to run. and of course those lines where so much better than what we have now

Dashi thinks if Tannehill is to be effective he has to

run a lot more. He is not performing in the 2nd half

and it has Dashi WORRIED.

D. Thomas is a Wildcat QB!

Still!! That would be Asinine!

Out of anything!!!! IF U DO WANT TO GET CREATIVE WITH T-HILL! RUN THE SPREAD OPTION FROM TIME TO TIME!!! LIKE THE REDSKINS!!

NO NEED TO PUT T-HILL WIDE! WHEN T-HILL HIMSELF IS ATHLETIC ENOUGH TO RUN THE WILDCAT UNDER CENTER!!! NO NEED TO LINE HIM UP WIDE! AND DO NOTHING!!

WITH THAT SAID! This game will be closer than Most of Us would like! 24-17!!! Fins!!!
