It was a long day for Jake and what that mean

It used to be that the overarching conversation surrounding Jake Long was about whether he indeed was the right pick as the No. 1 overall selection in 2008 over Matt Ryan. And the argument could be made that even if Ryan turned out to be a franchise quarterback, picking a Hall of Fame left tackle was still a wise choice.

Well, Long has not been playing like a Hall of Fame left tackle this year.

And on Sunday he didn't play like a Pro Bowl left tackle. Or even a good left tackle.

Matched against Dwight Freeney, who had been struggling with injuries and production prior to this game, Long was beaten soundly in the matchup. Freeney got a sack that stripped the ball from Ryan Tannehill and, ironically, Long plucked the pigskin out of the air and ran for a couple of yards.

It was a good save. But it wasn't a good look for Long.

He also yielded two other QB hits and at least one more pressure that forced Tannehill to get rid of the ball early. He also had a false start and had a holding call that was declined.

"Yeah, it appeared there were a couple of times, it looked like he got beat a couple of times," coach Joe Philbin said. "We'll have to take a look at the tapes to see if it's a technique thing. It might have been minor little things and some adjustments he'll have to make. But, yeah, we expect better protection."

Long echoed his coach after the game, giving credit to Freeney and his well-chronicled spin move. Long also promised an attempt at improvement.

"He got me on the one," Long said. "He gets off the ball quick and it's a hell of a move. He did well on that one and I just have to correct it and get better."

The truth is Long has not been Miami's best offensive lineman this year as he was in years past. That mantle has been passed to Mike Pouncey.

But the problem is where do the Dolphins and Long go from here? Long, you see, is a free agent after this season. And general manager Jeff Ireland is on record as saying he will not let Long get away from the Dolphins.

I get that because letting Long walk only creates another hole that has to be filled and the Dolphins have plenty of those as is. In fact, my column in today's Miami Herald makes the point that because quarterback Ryan Tannehill is good (but not great) the Dolphins have to surround him with more weapons and a better team to compete with teams that indeed do get great quarterback play.

And, by the way, Andrew Luck delivered great quarterback play against Miami on Sunday and has convinced me he's going to be great. Indeed, Luck has thrown for 2,404 yards this season. Peyton Manning? He's thrown for 2,404 yards this season.

The point is the Dolphins need to add talent, not lose some they already have.

Which brings me back to Long. It's going to be a hard negotiation if Long's agent, Tom Condon, is going to insist on having Long paid as the best left tackle in football -- which is exactly what Long was coming out of college as the No. 1 pick. Long was the highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL.

But after gutting through a couple of injury plagued seasons in 2010 and 2011 and still not playing at his highest level this year, I don't see how the Dolphins can justify paying Long like the best tackle in football. He's probably in the top 10 some games. But not every game.

Certainly not on Sunday.

"They're a hell of a defese. Their front line got a few on us. We just have to watch the film and get better and we will."

Craig. no way we franchise long. his cap hit would be 15 million. He's not worth half that right now.

Luck probably has better WR's but Tannehill has the far better OL and running game.

Pujo,
anyone that gets top money, black, white, yellow, green, will get ridiculed if they dont play up to their contract... BM did because he dropped a ton of passes, and alot of TD passes, Long has been ever since he was taken as the #1 over all pick and is taking a beat down this year for his regression. Stop turning everything into something racial.. If you get paid big then yes you get more attention paid to you. The majority of the players in the NFL are black so the majority will get ridiculed more..

"Good point We Have RB's
The money that I think Long would want, or Longs agent rather, would not but worth the out put.
I think his knees are giving on him, regardless if its 315 lbs of muscle or fat thats still 315 lbs of pressure on those knees and they will wear down. I say let him walk and pick up a proven FA or draft a LT or RT and move Martin."

Matty,

Ireland--or anyone else for that matter--would be out of their minds to pay top dollar for Jake Long after the way he played yesterday. It would be like when Parcells/Ireland/Sparano paid through the nose for Jake Grove.

Anyone who was watching the first two games of the season & yesterday's game objectively can clearly see he is not what he once was. The injuries have taken their toll & it's time to move on.

Craig
He hasnt played good all year, and if it comes down to him getting 10 million a year then let him walk because you can get another tackle playing just as good or better for less. He has had a bad YEAR not game.

Sparano covered up Longs short comings....

Posted by: pujo | November 05, 2012 at 10:39 AM

Don't you mean "CREATED" some of Longs short comings?

If I remember correctly, it was Idiot Tony that got his Pro Bowl Left Tackle injured in a COMPLETELY meaningless (4th)Pre Season Game.

If you give it some thought, Long hasn't been the same since. We should've known right then about Spaz-zano! One of the most idiotic, absurd and outright retarded moves that I've EVER seen from a guy **CALLING HIMSELF** a Head Coach!

Im agreeing with you We Have RB's

You can tell the players are losing confidence in Tannehill.

NJPhin,

Based on what??? He's the guy who kept us in the game to begin with. The defense got scorched & for whatever reason we stopped running the ball in the 2nd half.

Boulder,

Care to share with me how you came up with $15 million? It's the average of the top 5 tackles in the NFL. I don't believe that figure is $15 million. I believe it's closer to $10 mil.

I guess what you guy are saying is you'd be fine if ?Jake Long went and played for a team like the Pats or better yet protected a guy like Luck for the next 8-10 years. You want to get rid of the guy but you have no plan on how to replace him going forward. Brilliant!

It wasn't their Number 1 WR/future HOF WR named Reggie Wayne who was tearing us up--it was Avery & Hilton & their TE Allen.

Posted by: We Have RB's | November 05, 2012 at 10:41 AM

I agree WHR, but alot of their success was because of the "Attention" Wayne was getting.
--------------------------------------------

Having said that, I agree with the overall point of your post. Good One!

Tannehills QB rating in the 2nd halfs and OT has to be horrendous.

I believe Parcells comment following the clinching of the AFC East title in 2008 was "We still have a long way to go to be where we need to be". I disagree he was going for the quick fix and that line was warning fans and media alike, do not be dissapointed if next year 2009 is different from this year !!! It was dissapointing, but let's keep the facts straight.

yeah. wake would luv all of his 5 sax games 2wice a season against long/pats.
lol

Tannehill cannot close games in the third or fourth quarter. Tannehill really choked big time on the last drive, looking like Chad Henne again.

Matt Moore should have been brought in to close the game, instead Tannehill is lofting the ball way over Bess's head and way over DT's head for another loss.

Im agreeing with you We Have RB's

Matty,

I know you are. I'm just tired of people defending him. Take the name off of his jersey this season & I can assure you that no one would be saying that we need to re-sign our LT for over $10 Million a year or franchise him.

With all the steps forward that this franchise has taken with having a solid draft, finding & developing a starting QB, & hiring the right HC the signing of declining player for that type of money could really hurt this team going forward.

I don't care what Ireland said b/c Philbin is the former O-line coach & I'm sure he's not happy with some of the huge hits from the blindside that his QB has taken this year.

Can't blame the receivers yesterday. Tanny missed them. Throwing balls at guys shins on a crossing route. He was just not accurate again.

Tannehill had one touchdown pass against one of the worst defenses in the NFL and replacement players at defensive line and corner backs.
Tannehill scored 0 touchdowns inn the second half. He simply cannot close out games and does not have the "it" factor to close games. More like the sh it factor.

Hey Odinseye the 1st post. Um the Colts had the worst record in NFL last season. So who was the team doing the most rebuilding? Um the team that beat the Dolphins

Tannehills QB rating in the 2nd halfs and OT has to be horrendous.

NJPhin,

We have a rookie QB who hasn't been getting great protection all year who is working with two consistent receivers. What games are you watching???

BTW--You think it's a coincidence that Bess & Hartline are playing the best football of their careers????

Thats a good way to look at things WHR... Look at the player without his name on the back. Judge him that way.. and undoubtly people would be saying to let him walk. He played good for 3 years and was an all pro, thanks to him for that but looking to the future as we can now since we have what seems to be our QB of the future, he needs to be protected.

Tannehill lacks the accuracy of an NFL QB.

I know i said for three years on a row that Sean Smith wa a probowler even though he was rated near last again in 2011.I know i said this is the year that Sean Smith puts it all together and goez to the pro bowl.
I am a great evaluator of talent and should be respected by you little know nothing minions.

Sean Smith is awesome!

Now people want to mess with it again and get rid of Long, move Martin to LT and draft a RT? HUH?

None of us no if Martin can even play LT in the NFL. None of us. Oh you think he can because he played it in College but this isn't College.

Posted by: Craig M | November 05, 2012 at 10:46 AM
------------------------------------------------------

Good Point! I think we have no choice but to keep Long anyways.

But "Tinkering" with the O-Line is even CRAZIER talk.

Martin had strength issues and is holding on for Dear Life at Right Tackle. I'm not sure whose assignment it was, but the Guy that took out Tannehill's Knee ran right by Martin on the outside.

I think Martin will be a Good Right Tackle, but I wouldn't just automattically assume he would do as well on the Left.

Luck was harassed all game long and STILL made all of the throws unlike Tannehenne.

Tannehenne hahahhaha!
Dat's what i'm talking about!

Matty,

If we can keep him protected I know Tannehill is the QB of the future. That means future playoff wins & our best chance to win a SB since Marino.

Reading some of these post on here about Tannehill not being accurate or not being able to close games is laughable.

yes luck is great, but he has a huge advantage at the WR and TE position. they had speed all over the field. we must upgrade this 2 positions and CB. carrol is much better than last year but should be a nickel, not the starter. those 1st 5 picks need to hit those 3 positions hard.

all this talk about this year is premature. we need another good draft. i also think we need more d. thomas. bush had that great run but he is not the same yet. he is stuttering too much in the backfield. thomas is a great back in passing plays. he is the best blocking back. give reggie more time to heal and give thomas and miller more carries.

I see what i want to see and make up the rest.Screw the rest of you, it's all aboutz me!

Everyone should know Irescum cant draft a QB.

FYI, Marino endorsed Tannehill so now you know he will be choker just like he was at QB.

Ridiculous statement Mike

Tannehill NEVER shoznuff! One touchdown pass will not be enuff to winz games in da NFL. Not against Luck! I tells it how it iz playas! Jay Z for me.

Resign Sean Smith for huge dollaZ! My Man!

lol

It will be a couple of years before we are true year in and year out contenders. Bess and Hartline are having their best years and that comes from playing with a QB that makes you better and gets you the ball. Even when the Fins win their next SB people will have an issue with the QB or something.. Build through the draft like they are.. and this team will become a team to recon with for years to come..

No one is talking about how this team can't score in the second half. They did it again yesterday! Only 3 points put on the board. Defense gave up some big plays, mainly the hail mary in the endzone, but if the fish just score more than 3 points in the second half they most likely win. Second offense has been MIA!

hard 2 find something anymore pathetic than s.smith trying 2 hold onto that game sealing int.
lol

I wish i could score points in the fourth quarter and win games.

2 watt maybe we need San Diegos towel guy passing out stickum with our towels..

WThis is going to be a tough decision. Long is very injury prone!! And to justify that cap hit with the glaring other needs we have just does not make sense. We will have to address the following needs in the draft. CB, FS, a TE shutting LB, and a game changing TE, a faster DE on both sides, RT and a better faster stronger RB. If we had even half of those filled it may be worth the risk of giving long consideration but I unfortunately think unless the price is right we may have to close the book on this one.

"yes luck is great, but he has a huge advantage at the WR and TE position. they had speed all over the field. we must upgrade this 2 positions and CB. carrol is much better than last year but should be a nickel, not the starter. those 1st 5 picks need to hit those 3 positions hard.

Jaison,

I couldn't agree more. Thomas had the longest run of his career & after that I don't even remember if he even got another carry???? Miller comes in for one carry & runs for seven yards & that's it??? Does that make sense???

With the pressure the Colts were getting on the outside I find it odd that Sherman stopped running the ball.

I'm having lunch today with pro bowler Sean Smith while he still has a paycheck coming in. I'll probably not eat and just sit there with a boner.

FLASH BACK! Did anyone notice who was playing center for the Colts on Sunday? Samson Satele. In case you dont remember he was one of Cam Cameron's draft picks. An all pro center who is having a nice career. In addition (DT)Paul Solai,(Punter)Brandon Fields are all pros. Even Ted Ginn Jr is playing a key back up and special team role on a very good 49er's team. Brady Quin, was the QB that Cam Cameron was smashed for passing in the draft, and has been less successful in his career than the QB John Beck that Cam Cameron did draft in the second round. Considering what was in that draft it looks like Cam did pretty good in that draft. I thought so then and I think history now supports that arguement. In 2007 the entire secondary was depleted with injuries and players were being pulled off the street into the starting line up weekly. Yet, Cam and Ginn jr was the only story anyone wanted to talk about. Sorry to dig up this old hatchet but ive always felt Cam and Tedd Ginn didn't get a fair chance to prove themselves.

2 watt-f(-)...

lol

Just read an article that says the franchise number for LT's for 2012 was $9.4 million. It also states because this number is tied to the salary cap that it could drop for 2013.

One other point, it says that LTs are the second highest paid position in the NFL. I realize a large number of people in the NFL don't get the value of the position but that's not what the GMs in the league are saying.

HOME IS THAT YOU?

LMAO! @ HOME IF IT IS YOU!

and the least valuable player in the NFL goes to, ................. Miami's Sean Smith!

come on up and get your award Sean!

Long seems to have problems with any pass rusher with multiples moves. He doesnt seem to adjust well on the fly. Remember the year the Falcons pass rusher bull rushed over top of Long?

Long had zero answers to Freeney's "spin cycle". Freeney may as well have had Long in the "dryer".

So this makes 3 pass rush moves Long has problems with:

1. Speed rush
2. Bull rush
3. Spin move

Are there anymore left? If Long "flaming out" right before our very eyes? I would franchise him for a season to find out for sure. Still shopping him around to see what I could get for him. If we could get a 1st rd pick for him today, I would trade him in a split second. No qualms about it!

Home, I hate when ur right!
Nice score prediction on the other blog Indy winning by 3 points, Sean Smith sucking (even though this is the year he puts it all together) and no Pro Bowl for big Jake!

you can still trade after the trade deadline?

I believe Parcells comment following the clinching of the AFC East title in 2008 was "We still have a long way to go to be where we need to be". Dolfan Mac,

EVERYBODY always SAYS we have a Long Way to Go.

I know what Parcells **SAID**.

I also know what he **DID**.

He brought in a BUNCH of high priced and Over-Paid aging Free Agents. Tons and Tons of them!

In an attempted quick fix, Parcells brought in more high priced free agents than any other GM/coach dating all the way back to when Shula brought in the ex Eagles, the TE from Pittsburg and the rest of those Free Agents that year.

It's also evident as the reason we've been in such Bad Cap Shape as well.

So while his comments may have implied one thing, his ACTIONS told the REAL story.

You can take that to the bank, cause thats the "Straight Facts".

and the least valuable player in the NFL goes to, ................. Miami's Sean Smith!

LMAO! @ Home !!!!!!!

C'Mon Mando - the BIG ISSUE is not Long.

The BIGGEST WEAKNESS on this current team is CB. Smith has been too inconsistent and Marshall is a waste all together. We don't have true starter quality CB's...at all!!

Managing Long is not a big problem next year. There is no evidence on film that he is the #1 T in football. His agent cans spin it any way he wants to. Long is declining but still top 10 in talent and still worth signing to a rich but fair contract. If they fight that then Ireland will have no choice than to put the tag on him. We then see how Martin continues to develop and if Long shows progress. Either way we can't be shopping for a T in the draft.

Smith is a FA next year and I feel strongly that he should not be resigned. He just hasn't proven to be worth a big contract at all. Sorry I just don't see it.

Marshall should be cut after the season. Wilson should be a Saftey backup and Carroll is, at best, a CB backup.

THE FINS NEED 2 CB'S NEXT YEAR - PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!

Other major issues are WR, LB, S and TE.

#1 WR is glaringly missing and we need to use one of our 2nd round picks there or get a FA if available. Hartline is a FA too. But he is not a #1 WR and we should never pay him as such. If he goes then so be it.

Dansby is overpaid. He is doing fine overall but not stellar. IF we can resign him to a fair contract fine but we should not pay him at his current level. I'd be fine using a 2nd round pick to fill his ILB spot if needed.

Clemons is a backup and special teamer. We have to get another S in to create competition to help Jones (who i think is showing some promise this year).

IF Egnew can't rise up then we need to cut him and get someone who is true receiving threat.

Here's the link if anyone wants to read up on it. Notice a number of these LTs salaries are coming down for 2013. I don't think it's etched in stone that Long will make or even want $10 mil next year. Thomas looks like the only guy whos getting that kind of money right now. Long made big money on his rookie contract. I don't think it's a given that he needs to be paid as the top OLineman in the league. I've never read those comments from either him or his agent. If the comments exist please send the link.

Craig M....

I told you last season what happened to Long...

Sporano happened to Long....

Screwed up his career in a MEANINGLESS pre-season games against the Cowboys....some NOBODY who probably isn't even the NFL any more happened to LONG...and the FINS are STILL paying the price....

and Tanne will pay the price this year...and Long will pay it next year (with less guaranteed money in his contract)...

Thanks Sporano....

I wish i could play against Sean Smith every week.I mean seriously as that the best you got! lol

If my WR held on to the TD pass over Sean Smith. Seriously, I would have had 3 TDs over Smith and over 500 YDs passing.

Hey Odinseye the 1st post. Um the Colts had the worst record in NFL last season. So who was the team doing the most rebuilding? Um the team that beat the Dolphins

Posted by: me | November 05, 2012 at 11:03 AM

I suppose you think you've made a point-lol?

How does this relate to my post?

Let me answer, it doesn't. I stand by it, the sky isn't falling and we are sitting pretty!

Sanchez beat Smith twice this year, embarrassing him.
So what did you expect from me. a rookie QB?

just give me Miami's cast away Clyde Gates and i can smoke Sean Smith. lol
