It was a long day for Jake and what that mean

It used to be that the overarching conversation surrounding Jake Long was about whether he indeed was the right pick as the No. 1 overall selection in 2008 over Matt Ryan. And the argument could be made that even if Ryan turned out to be a franchise quarterback, picking a Hall of Fame left tackle was still a wise choice.

Well, Long has not been playing like a Hall of Fame left tackle this year.

And on Sunday he didn't play like a Pro Bowl left tackle. Or even a good left tackle.

Matched against Dwight Freeney, who had been struggling with injuries and production prior to this game, Long was beaten soundly in the matchup. Freeney got a sack that stripped the ball from Ryan Tannehill and, ironically, Long plucked the pigskin out of the air and ran for a couple of yards.

It was a good save. But it wasn't a good look for Long.

He also yielded two other QB hits and at least one more pressure that forced Tannehill to get rid of the ball early. He also had a false start and had a holding call that was declined.

"Yeah, it appeared there were a couple of times, it looked like he got beat a couple of times," coach Joe Philbin said. "We'll have to take a look at the tapes to see if it's a technique thing. It might have been minor little things and some adjustments he'll have to make. But, yeah, we expect better protection."

Long echoed his coach after the game, giving credit to Freeney and his well-chronicled spin move. Long also promised an attempt at improvement.

"He got me on the one," Long said. "He gets off the ball quick and it's a hell of a move. He did well on that one and I just have to correct it and get better."

The truth is Long has not been Miami's best offensive lineman this year as he was in years past. That mantle has been passed to Mike Pouncey.

But the problem is where do the Dolphins and Long go from here? Long, you see, is a free agent after this season. And general manager Jeff Ireland is on record as saying he will not let Long get away from the Dolphins.

I get that because letting Long walk only creates another hole that has to be filled and the Dolphins have plenty of those as is. In fact, my column in today's Miami Herald makes the point that because quarterback Ryan Tannehill is good (but not great) the Dolphins have to surround him with more weapons and a better team to compete with teams that indeed do get great quarterback play.

And, by the way, Andrew Luck delivered great quarterback play against Miami on Sunday and has convinced me he's going to be great. Indeed, Luck has thrown for 2,404 yards this season. Peyton Manning? He's thrown for 2,404 yards this season.

The point is the Dolphins need to add talent, not lose some they already have.

Which brings me back to Long. It's going to be a hard negotiation if Long's agent, Tom Condon, is going to insist on having Long paid as the best left tackle in football -- which is exactly what Long was coming out of college as the No. 1 pick. Long was the highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL.

But after gutting through a couple of injury plagued seasons in 2010 and 2011 and still not playing at his highest level this year, I don't see how the Dolphins can justify paying Long like the best tackle in football. He's probably in the top 10 some games. But not every game.

Certainly not on Sunday.

"They're a hell of a defese. Their front line got a few on us. We just have to watch the film and get better and we will."

moore at qb = win at indy.

Home is that you?
want to give you my autographed gloves from yesterdays game!

Tannehill plays just like Henne. Crappy when it counts.

Posted by: Moore's mommy, er I mean, Vegas Mike!

the coaches kno this now.

Moore would be 7-1 with our D.

Home, i have Sean Smith's autographed jock strap from yesterdays loss :)

Congrats on your score prediction on the other blog with my ex-mobster bloggers. Good call Indy by 3.

Moore would be 7-1 with our D.

i agree and did you see my new sneakers. awesome!

Nice job, Home on the score prediction, Indy by 3.
tradeseansmith.com now also has my vote.

Craig - thanks for your post. I think it's clear that we both want to see the pass defense improve greatly. How we get there is the challenge. We all there are a lot of moving parts and depending on how things progress, the Fins' approach to this issue will need to evolve.

Here are some key points to consider:

1) #1 WR. I think it's hard to get one in the draft that contributees right away. So, if Bowe or Wallace really shake free in FA then I'd like to see us go after them. Lets assume (for now) that happens. then we don't need to use our top pick for the WR spot.

2) Are we sticking with a 4-3? I think we should.

2A) If we do than I agree we need a stronger DE to complement Wake. In the 4-3 we have to get steady consistent QB pressure from the 4 down lineman (think Giants). I think Starks should be resigned (if not too $ costly) and Odrick should move to the DT rotation. This gives us some rushing up the middle. Let McDaniel go if needed. Vernon is showing some potential and we need to see how he progresses for the balance of the year. I could see using one of the 2nd round picks for a DE.

2B) Can Dansby really be a solid ILB? Or is he better served as an OLB and let Burnett go? I think Misi has improved and should be retained. I think Burnett has been OK but not sure he is really a starter any longer. I think Dansby should be resigned but too much less money. Depending on how this shakes out I see the Fins needing to use a 3rd round pick on ILB. We just don't have the final LB unit put together yet and we need LB's to cover TE's much better.

3) While there have been some recent CB busts in the draft there have also been successes in the past. Remember Surtain and Madison? They were picked by the Fins and made a great tandem for several years. So, assuming no team is going to allow a shut down corner to leave in FA (not sure who is even on the list next year as possible FA's?), I think we need to use our #1 pick on a shut down CB prospect. IF everything above plays out we would also have a one of the 2nd round picks available and I'd use it on CB as well. Smith was toast in the Jets game as well (watch the tape). Sanchize just couldn't make him pay). Also the Jets receiver dropped the wide open pass in the end zone. Smith sucks!! There is no evidence with real Fins game tape that Marshall is a starting CB. Just no evidence of it.

To recap my points above and my earlier post:

Keep Long (even if you have to tag him).

Try to land a #1 WR in FA.

Use picks 1, 2, 1, to get CB, CB and DE in any order possible.

Use one of the 3rd Rounders on LB.

Use other 3rd Rounder on S to challenge Clemons.

If it were just that easy :)

Anyone blaming Tannehill for this loss needs to get back to shining shoes for living. Assessing football games definitely isnt your calling.

Great prediction Home Colts by 3.
Where have you been, come back and post at the Post!

heehee, from the reactions to our Loss yesterday to the Colts, there is a lot to learn from our posters here. You be sure to tell Ireland your views on that Game, Kris, 2watt.

Tannehill choked overthrowing bess and DT thomas, just like the game he coulkd not hit Hartline in the end zone twice overthrowing him in the 4th quarter.

Tannehill is not a closer.

Might start thiniking bout Moore starting and Tannehill at WR

Home is right on this one!

Ireland's draft of 2012 is a failure other than Tannehill which is doing good for a losing 3-4 QB that cannot close out a game.

As an excellent evaluator of NFL talent, i agree Ben.
Tannehill has NO kill factor and his taste in music and sneakers is way too white!

I got to agree with Shula 72 @ 12:25.....

The NFL's op 2 leaders in passing yardage (all time)....have 1(ONE) SB between them....

even tho they have throw for more than 133,000 yards between them....

Favre/Marino...

Yard=meaningless....

efficiency and WINS= SBs....

No Great Team should place the outcome of a Game on the QBs shoulders. However, IF that comes to happen, that QB should deliver and Win the Game. No excuses for anybody here.

You guys are nuts!
Great job on the score prediction Home and yes no Jake Long in the Pro Bowl ever again and seansmithsucks.com

During the 2nd half we tried to run nearly every 1st down. The run game was no longer clicking, as evident by continuos 2nd, 3rd and longs. Then recievers didnt consistently get open soon enough, oline penalties, and giving up pressures on Tannehill on 3rd and longs begin to plague us.

The evidence of this? We only scored 3pts the entire 2nd half. The Colts shutdown our run in the 2nd half forcing 3rd and longs, then we couldnt get out of our own way.

I thank Tanne will be very efficient....

and efficency = WIN....

jpao,

I have a little different approach. I'm not in favour of spending big bucks in FA to sign a WR. I just think a guy like Bowe (who I like), will eat into the cap too much. Too me this would be a mistake. I want a guy like Hilton yesterday, in the draft in April. He's be ideal for this offence and he's contributing right away. I would think you could get a guy like that in the second round.

I'd go pass rush in the first, WR and CB/S in the second and CB/S in the third, likely followed by TE (maybe). I'd re-sgn all of the FAs but I wouldn't overspend on Smith or Hartline or Fasano.

I don't think this team is that far away. I think yesterday was a good gauge of how far we still need to go.

Lets stop beating around the bush. Tannehill sucks as bad as Henne. He was pathetic in the 4th quarter...AGAIN! PLAY MOORE AND GO TO THE PLAYOFFS!

Long will reveal his injury at the end of this year and announce his retirement. So he won't sign with any team. He's retired.

Kris,

No reason to believe that Tannehill can't be to this team what Ryan or Flacco are to their teams. All those two guys do is win consistently. That's the model.

sherman = senile ii.
lol

The following QBs are owed an apology by their teams:

Tim Tebow
Matt Moore.

Both should be starting and would have winning records right now.

I agree Craig M....

Luck torched our D for 433 yards and set a NEW ROOKIE passing record....but the game was still in doubt with 1:30 on the clock....

yards=meaningless....

Freakin Home every week but one, You got the right team and close score on the Miami Dolphins.
Let's go to Vegas , baby!

Salguero, you talk too much about Long, but S.Smith's performance was pathetic. Tannehill just need some time to develop that cold blood that makes the infamous Brady one of the best QB's ever. He's been improving in this sector as he doesn't risk the ball like Romo, who's been playing for years. As soon as the Dolphins surround of game-changing players then Tann will shine even more.
The Dolphins will win the next two games, but Philbin has to replace Smith urgently. He's the hole that will be atacked in every game.

no reason tannehill cannot be to this team what Henne was to this team. loser in the 4th.

The fans calling for Moore are correct. Those who disagree that Moore should start and has earned the starter's job are incorrect. That is all.

Moore would be 7-1 this year. He got to play in one game after getting no snaps, cold, and went 12/18 for 180 yards and 2 perfectly thrown TDs, including an 80 yarder that stale Gaffney dropped. Yes, if you watched the game you know that Moore was 12/18 (67%) for 180 and 2 TDs, after getting no first team snaps all year, in the game stale.

Hennehill is 55% and even worse in the 4th quarter and like Henne does not create passing TDs.

He did not have a good game yesterday. It was not a good game by today's standards. Luck had a good game. Hennehill had a C- game.

All this talk about our passing D. Yeah, it stunk, but in the end we gave up only 23 points. If the D gives up only 23 points. we should win. Moore would have produced at least 28 to 31 points. We scored only 20 points all game. That's horrible.

Tannehill= does not SHO'Z NUFF, No KillZ

Hartline is ok for a white boy.

Try Tanny at WR if he cant make it at QB.

CraigM,

You want a wr like the Colts Hilton? The Colts didnt even draft a wr like Hilton. Yesterday, announcers repeatedly said the Colts thought they were drafting a "returner" when they drafted Hilton. They had no idea he would turn out to be the wr he has.

Sometimes its just better to be lucky than good when it comes to drafting. Plus a wr like Hilton isnt a #1wr, he's a complimentary wr at best. We already have those types. We need a #1 wr, not a complimentary wr.

Therefore, we dont need to draft a wr like Hilton in next year's draft. We need a true #1wr.

Ireland is the blame.
Vonte gone, Richard Marshall out, Nolan Carrol injured.
Everyone knows the weakness of the Dolphins is the secondary. The Colts killed us on 3rd and long and Arizona killed us on 3rd, 4th and long. And the Jets beat us in O/T with poor secondary play.
We need the best WR available in the draft, then the best Corner and Safety.

Indy played with backup dbs and linemen.
TanneHenne could not close and is average at best.
Luck is the real deal.

During pre season and on Hard Knocks, it looked like this was a team that would be lucky if it was 1-7 at this point.
Something good is happening here even with lesser talent than some other teams. It's only going to get better as time goes by and they can add some more talent thru draft and trades.
I am happy to be 4-4 and in every game played so far except the Houston game.
As for the Tannehill naysayers, who want him to play like Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers, you are sadly mistaken when you say he should be replaced by Moore.
The biggest difference yesterday between Luck and Tanny was that Luck saw wide open receivers and felt little defensive pressure compared to Ryan.

..I keep reading that some want certain players signed. The caveat...If not to much money.

Well wake up. Some guys are going to command some bigger paychecks. If we want to keep Long outside of the franchise tag..It is going to cost. Starks..He deserves a big contract. Wake..Any of our core guys who will be the disscussion of contract talks will deserve big money. Ask yourselves this. Do we let these guys go in the name of saving cash, or do we explore the unknown and try to save? IMO, we did that this year..No cash for free premium free agents, release the riff raff, and gain picks in exchange. Let the young guys live and learn. Now it appears that we have some guys that will have a ton of value to not only or team, but others too. It may not be in our best interest to be frugal in these instances.

Jeff, give me fity million dollars!
Next year, ya see, i'mz gonna bea probowla!
Now writes me a check!

i agreez!Seans gonna be a Pro Bowler, .....next years

coconut kelly.
lol

Ireland in th OUTFATED Parcells mode...built a hellacious RUN STOPPING D...that probably would be on PAR with the BEARS of the 80's...and the GIANTS of the 90's....

However....

Its a passing league now....Ireland didn't get the memo until Philbin arrived....

Philbin will get this fixed and tell Ireland who he needs to fix it....

were OK moving forward...

Weeez 29th in the NFL in pass defense!

Only 3 more spots to go!

Now pay me bietches!

These clowns will play Tannehill thru losing years until his contract is over and then let him go a la Henne. HAHA

I am concerned about Long's health. This is the type of team where you need multiple players to step up weekly in order to win. Luck is going to be great, I believe that Tannehill will not be that far behind him.

read me at the Sun Sentinel. please! someone! anyone!
imz a grate evalueter of talent anf good spelher too!

Those singing Luck's praises, wake up. Luck played against the 28th ranked pass defense and soft coverage all day. Still his team only scored 23pts(Sean Smith should have had the pick on the last td, but claims he lost the ball in the lights.

Smith dropped one pick, lost one in the lights(he says), Dansby dropped a sure pic 6. Thats at least 3 picks Luck should have had, had we capitalized defensively. Luck doesnt get away with this against most great pass defenses. So dont sing the Luck praises so soon.

Luck was extremely "LUCKY" yesterday that he played against a defense that couldnt capitalized on his many mistakes.

Home is that U !?????

YG,

Hilton was a second round pick (high second round at that). You don't draft guys like that in the second round to be kick returners. This team doesn't necessarily need a #1 WR, they need someone who can do what Cruz does in NYG or Cobb does in GB. They need someone who can get behind the defences and take it to the house. We don't have that guy on the roster right now. This offence wasn't made for a #1 WR. What's missing is a guy who can contribute things we don't have right now. GB never had a true number one WR. That's what we're looking for.

It's gotta be HOME! Who the F~!@ else is that crazy, oh and damn good score prediction HOME. I read you on the M"FEs blog.

..Yg. Luck was great yesterday, Call it what you will. If it was so easy, every team would do it to us. Give him his props and move on. The Colts were a better team yesterday. We were outcoached, we were outplayed. Pretty simple.

Home,
Sir, I need your vote!

any prediction on how much I beat Romney?

Go Phins!

Well, there you. Our weakness was exploited by their strength, and we couldn't get off the field on 3rd down.

Luck was amazing in the pocket. He avoided pressure and exposed our secondary's shortcomings. 2 missed interceptions and missed tackles cost Miami dearly. There is no way Luck should be able to throw one up into double coverage and come away with a TD, but he did, and now the phins are back to .500 and looking up at all the other wildcard teams.

Opportunity lost...

Well Darryl,

They do have "Luck In Indy" as Home stated

and you have Jeff Ireland

Go figure.

Darryl D - I am one of those chiming in on FA and the big money issue. I fully understand that players "Want" Big money. But will they really get it? That is the issue.

Long - OK to pay as top 10 T's but if he pushes for moe put the tag on him.

Bush - I think he is a great leader but his production is too sporadic. If he pushed for top 5 RB money and gets an offer from another team then let him go. I'm fine with Miller and Thomas for a year.

Hartline - He may want #1 WR money but he won't get it.

Dansby - He may want top 5 LB money but he is not worth it. IF he gets it, let him go. If not resign him.

Smith - His is a hot mess. Let him go all together. Really just send him on his way. Bye now!

Starks - He deserves top 10 DT money, too important of a position. Pay the man.

Wake was paid. He is not a free agent next year.

I am sure I am missing someone but the reality is that the Fins can't sign them all. They can't sign them to all top 5 contracts. Some don't deserve to be signed at all.

Home,

please have all your personalities vote and all those avatars too. lol

I'm not blaming tanny for this loss. But when the game was on the line with 5 minutes left he didn't go and win it. He had 2 chances and he couldn't do it. I bet Luck, with 5 minutes on the clock with the game in hand would have gone down the field and scored.
Luck is a franchise QB. Tanny is a good QB but he's not in Luck's league right now IMO and may never be there. More likely tanny will become Matt schaub.

Vonte Davis: Ring-ring-ring...

"Hello, grandma?

Grandma: Yes, baby...

Vonte: Yeah grandma, we beat those beetches, and I didnt even have to play."

Grandma: Thats good baby, you didnt even have to get your clothes dirty. Dont be late for the chitterlings and cornbread dinner. I know its your favorite.

Vonte: Ok grandma. I gotta go now, I have to pee.

Grandma: Ok, baby.

We're bringing Home over to our side.

Go Dolphins!
