It was a long day for Jake and what that mean

It used to be that the overarching conversation surrounding Jake Long was about whether he indeed was the right pick as the No. 1 overall selection in 2008 over Matt Ryan. And the argument could be made that even if Ryan turned out to be a franchise quarterback, picking a Hall of Fame left tackle was still a wise choice.

Well, Long has not been playing like a Hall of Fame left tackle this year.

And on Sunday he didn't play like a Pro Bowl left tackle. Or even a good left tackle.

Matched against Dwight Freeney, who had been struggling with injuries and production prior to this game, Long was beaten soundly in the matchup. Freeney got a sack that stripped the ball from Ryan Tannehill and, ironically, Long plucked the pigskin out of the air and ran for a couple of yards.

It was a good save. But it wasn't a good look for Long.

He also yielded two other QB hits and at least one more pressure that forced Tannehill to get rid of the ball early. He also had a false start and had a holding call that was declined.

"Yeah, it appeared there were a couple of times, it looked like he got beat a couple of times," coach Joe Philbin said. "We'll have to take a look at the tapes to see if it's a technique thing. It might have been minor little things and some adjustments he'll have to make. But, yeah, we expect better protection."

Long echoed his coach after the game, giving credit to Freeney and his well-chronicled spin move. Long also promised an attempt at improvement.

"He got me on the one," Long said. "He gets off the ball quick and it's a hell of a move. He did well on that one and I just have to correct it and get better."

The truth is Long has not been Miami's best offensive lineman this year as he was in years past. That mantle has been passed to Mike Pouncey.

But the problem is where do the Dolphins and Long go from here? Long, you see, is a free agent after this season. And general manager Jeff Ireland is on record as saying he will not let Long get away from the Dolphins.

I get that because letting Long walk only creates another hole that has to be filled and the Dolphins have plenty of those as is. In fact, my column in today's Miami Herald makes the point that because quarterback Ryan Tannehill is good (but not great) the Dolphins have to surround him with more weapons and a better team to compete with teams that indeed do get great quarterback play.

And, by the way, Andrew Luck delivered great quarterback play against Miami on Sunday and has convinced me he's going to be great. Indeed, Luck has thrown for 2,404 yards this season. Peyton Manning? He's thrown for 2,404 yards this season.

The point is the Dolphins need to add talent, not lose some they already have.

Which brings me back to Long. It's going to be a hard negotiation if Long's agent, Tom Condon, is going to insist on having Long paid as the best left tackle in football -- which is exactly what Long was coming out of college as the No. 1 pick. Long was the highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL.

But after gutting through a couple of injury plagued seasons in 2010 and 2011 and still not playing at his highest level this year, I don't see how the Dolphins can justify paying Long like the best tackle in football. He's probably in the top 10 some games. But not every game.

Certainly not on Sunday.

"They're a hell of a defese. Their front line got a few on us. We just have to watch the film and get better and we will."

Jeff likes my haircut. I'm gettin a da new contract. yup!

And YG, what has Jennings contributed this year?

New England as "scoring threats". We have "downfield chain movers" at best.

S. Smith dropping that INT while trying to get up...lol....has to be one of the WORST plays in FINS history...

I put it right up there with Nanee...and his tripping over the 30 YARD LINE...and the fumbling UNTOUCHED....

Kris, 2 reasons why we beat the Titans this week:
1- because I said so (ok, that's a joke)
THE REAL #1 - Hasselbeck isn't elite or a precise passer
#2 - They "try" to be balanced running with Chris Johnson

Both of those equals Miami winning!

Not to be an a-hole, but go to nfl.com and do the work yourself. To make sure my answers are accurate, i go to nfl.com to get the correct answers for you.

Do it yourself, and you wont have to keep asking these questions to force me to do your work for you. Im not getting paid for this baby. Im sure your keyboard works just fine too if you "REALLY" want the answers.

I feel Ive done enough for you. Its very tiring work to fetch all of your answers for you. Can you please send me a check? LOL..

Hope your right DC....

But I heard that Locker was gonna start....

DC and Kris,

I'm picking the Dolphins this week too. Yesterday was a good lesson for this team and they have to expect angry Titan team coming to town. Philbin will have them prepared.

Craig M....

IF.....were going to win...PHILBIN and SHERMAN had better figure out were the heck the running game went....

The point I'm trying to make with you is your number one receiver in GB has done nothing this year. He's been hurt. He's played THREE games, has caught 12 passes for 78 yards and one TD. Has GB's offence skipped a beat without him? Absolutely not.

You mentioned James Jones. He's not a number on receiver. Just because he's got good stats doesn't make him a number one receiver. SAme with Cobb. Yes, both those guys could help this team. My whole point is, this offence doesn't NEED a number one wide receiver eating into the cap. A guy that can add to what Harline and Bess do is the guy we need. Same in GB. That's the model. We can get that guy in the draft.

Kris @2:37pm,

Dame right they'd better figure it out. If Bush can't do it let's see a bit more of Miller.

There is NO EXCUSE why the FINS coudn't get the RUN GAME going against the 27th ranked RUSH D...

Armando....instead of writing an article SPOT LIGHTING Long's short-commings....how about one BLAMING the ENTIRE O-LINE for not being able to block the 27th ranked RUSH D....

I'm the best CB in the NFL!

The point Im making is we have recievers that may be good in intermediate areas and move chains. But they arent consistent scoring threats. WHRB's made a comment: "we need more Hartline/Bess types".

In this highly disagree, we need more scoring threat type recievers or we will continue struggling to consistently put points on the board. Hartline/Bess can move the chains, but between the both of them IO dont we have 15recieving td's over the entire past 3-4yrs.

If our secondary could catch Andrew Luck would've cost them the game. He didn't play as great as it weems.

Titans give up an average of 139.0 yards on the ground....

The fins need to be up around 120.. yards on the ground....

And like I said earlier, I think we're all saying the same thing but in a different way. I'm not looking for a Dez Bryant type who comes in here and has a game like last night, hwere he had one catch for 15 yards. Yeah I get that he's injured but the guy's a DIVA extraordinaire. Just turned 24 and he thinks his SHYTE don't stink. The Cowboys don't even trust him to run back punts any more and he drops catches he SHOULD make. That's the fear in bringing a highly paid ticket like Bowe on board. Changes the whole chemistry of the team. So give me one of these other guys we talked about, but give me one making about $2-2.5 mil a year, over what a guy like Bowe will make on the open market.

Craig M....

did you see the Steeler's Giamts game last night....

Did you see the Steelers reciever catch the 5 yard SLANT PASS on one side line....run ALL the way to the other side line (50 yards)....STILL have enough speed to turn the corner....and beat ALL the GIANT defenders to the endzone....

we need somebody who can do that....

nomore guys that trip over their own feet every time they try and turn the ball up field....

The run game has becoe limited because of 8-9 in the run box by defenses. No matter how good your run blocking is, youre not going to consistently blow the defense off the ball. The numbers are against you.

Why defenses are playing 8-9 in the run box? Dc's are not having sleepless night of Hartline/Bess consistently beating them over the top with 1st and 2nd down playaction passing.

Only a #1wr that consistently beats one on one coverage over the top can change thi. Not playing Lamar Miller more. First a rb has to have a hole to run through. There wont consistently be many with defenses playing 7-8-9 men in the run box.

We need a wr that forces the defense to play our run game honestly with a max of 6 defenders in the run box. Until this happens it doesnt much matter which rb's we have in there. We may occassionally breeak off good or great gains, but, the numbers factor will always be against us.

Also the dude who almost returned the punt for the TD (he got hurt later in the game)....

that guy was so fast he looked like he was gliding...kicker played the angl to perfection....

We need some speed like that....

but even so...it took Wallace some time to develop...the Steelers didn't rush him...

Dez Bryant is a terrible description of the type of anyone's #1 wr. Off the field problems, blowing assignments on the field, plus he isnt a frequent enough scoring threat in the passing game.

We need a wr that can consistently get us at least 8-9 recieving tds each year. The greater the better. The last thing we need is a wr who averages 6 or less recieving tds a year.

I'm in total agreement with your 2:52pm post. Hartline's useful but I'm not sure we have the guy who can do that (I actually didn't see the play). I've been saying this for a while now too. I think we can get that guy in the second round of the draft. I just don't believe that Philbin's model uses a 'true' number one wide receiver. I don't think it's necessary. The offence works because they get everyone involved. Having the Marshall or Bryant 'diva' type on this team isn't what this offence is about.

Just googled Dez Bryant. He did have 9 recieving tds last year. Unless he's giving you nearly 15 tds a year, he isnt really worth the headache. He has greater potential to do more harm than good with on and off the field issues.

Bryant was taken by the Cowboys with the 12th pick of the draft to be their number one receiver. Make no mistake about it. You don't take a WR that high to be anything else. What I'm saying is, that's not the type of guy we want on this team. Moody, distant, drops balls when he shouldn't. Great way to kill team chemistry!

Aha....your Google IS working....I see.

IMO, as far as the 2013 draft goes, we need to draft BPA 1st rd of thse 3 positions:

1. Corner. Self explanatory.

2. MLB. Dansby isnt a true 4-3 mlb. Would love to see Manu T'eo in a Fins yuney.

3. Wr.

We need the bpa in the 1st rd of these 3 positions. Cant go into this draft neccessarily saying wait until 2nd rd to draft a wr. Let bpa dictate where we do what.

Again we'll disagree. I believe you draft for need and WR isn't as BIG a need as IMO, safety, OLB/DE and perhaps CB. I believe WR is going to be a value pick in the second or third. I'd rather see OLB or a dominant Safety in the first. To me those are bigger needs.

It also presently seems we could be drafting middle of the pack or higher. There're only 3 difficult games left on the schedule, Pats twice, San Fran once.

If we win every game but those 3 we finish 9-7, drafting 13th to 15th area. I call it bpa area(corner, mlb, possibly wr depending what's available).

Well.....that game was a buzz kill.

Andrew Luck actually did us a HUGE favor yesterday...Showed us that Sean Smith is garbage, just like I always thought he was...He never wants any part of defending the run, he's a big guy but a big pus**. All this talk about him being a shutdown corner, what a joke...Just cause he did well against Sanchez? Big deal! The real test is against the real teams, like the Patriots, the 49ers, yesterday's Colts, etc etc...Dropping the football getting off the ground like he did yesterday was just simply laughable. What a dork...So in the end, Luck and the Colts showed us who we do need to re-sign and who we don't. Starks and Hartline should be priorities. Long and Smith can take a hike...Thanks a lot Parcells, some football genius you are...

Do you agree that Dansby isnt a "true 4-3 mlb"? I think yesterday was evidence of it. That's why I wouldnt be against drafting the Notre Dame mlb if available when we draft 1st rd either. T'eo has been phenominal this year and he's a tyrue upgrade at mlb to Dansby.

T'eo great against the run and pass coverage at Notre Dame. We need a pass coverage play making mlb underneath like nobody's business. Dansby's terrible at making picks and I see him get caught out of place too often. He int a instinct gifted MLB, like a Zach Thomas or other great mlb's

I suree do miss the days of Zach Thomas as a 4-3 mlb, making clutch run stops, ints, and timely blitz sacks. We see none of this from Dansby. When we do its "extremely" occassional.

Long is looking pretty bad. Don't pay a quickly declining player what he'll command. Move Martin to LT & find another RT.

Use the money to resign ascending players like Bush, Starks, Hartline & Smith. Those are pieces to build around & keep.

BTW, the real S. Smith showed up yesterday in full force. Toast on deep balls & just awful ball recognition. He was toast more than a few times & how many int's did he whiff on or drop?

I wouldn't resign him for ridiculous money but, the fact is, our corners are so bad, losing smith would leave us needing 3 viable DB's. At least with Smith in the fold, we'd only need 2.

I really like the kid out of ND too. I just wonder if this is the biggest need for us right now. It has nothing to do with the kid because I think he's outstanding. I'm just wondering if we actually get the passrush we want and need from a guy like Dansby at OLB. I'd be more inclined to let him go than to pay him the $11 mil to play OLB. So now I wonder if we're not opening up another hole, unless you pay Misi and Burnett also. I'm just not sure we're really filling the big holes on this team doing it. Not opposed to it. Just wonder if we'd be better addressing other needs. I'd love to see dominant pass rusher or safety. An Earl Thomas guy would be great.

Amazing how our 1-15 season should of given us a nucleus of good draft picks, but Parcells totally ruined it for Miami. Take a look who's left from that draft. Crazy. Long on the decline, most likely playing his last season in Miami while Ryan is undefeated. Merling is probably driving a school but somewhere. Langford is gone to St.Louis. Henne, well, do we have to beat on a dead horse again? 4 high picks that didn't pan out. Ok, Long made the Pro Bowl. So what? He's had 1 or 2 good years, big whoopi sh**...This was just 4 years ago and he's already on the decline...So that draft set us back big time...Thanks Bill, you're heading to Canton bro...

I dont think there's an oc in this league game planning for Karlos Dansby either.

Dansby promised us an "all-pro" season this year. But he isnt even playing "pro-bowl" alternate level thus far. He's not the answer as a 4-3 mlb. He's adequate at best.

Dansby's got 63 tackles through 8 games. That's a pretty good pace. He predicted 150 tackles this year and he's not far off. I'm not saying he's a Pro Bowler, I'm just saying he's a pretty solid contributor. I like him a lot more than Crowder.

We have at least 4 crucial holes left to fill on this team. We may not get them all properly filled next season anyway.

So, even if mlb isnt the greatest need, if T'eo is available and we selected him. We know we have that position locked down for the next 8 to 10 yrs. This kid looks to be a perrenial nfl pro bowler.

MLB may not be th greatest need, but it is a great need. If this kid is availble with our 1st pick, he may be just to good a pick to pass up. Depending what's available at corner or wr.

The soft schedule, as in 2008, deluded the minds of some of the fanbase.

This roster has too many holes to make any kind of legit run for at least 2-3 years.

The stupidity level here is off the charts. The meter is broken.

Im not overly concened with Dansby's number of tackles. Im more concerned about his lack of penchant for making game breaking plays.

He doesnt force fumbles(maybe occassionally), doesnt make the critical pick(dropped one right in his hands Sunday0, and doesnt often get to the qb on blitzes(unless the oline totally blows the assignment).

Regardless of how many tackles Dansby has, there isnt one oc in the entire league having sleepless game week nights preparing for Karlos Dansby as our 4-3 mlb.

On defense, I feel extremely comfortable with the d-line, Wake at olb, and Reshad Jones at safety. Everything else is questionable as starters can be upgraded.

I also expect that soon that Vernon will replace Misi at starting olb. Just as soon as he learns pass coverage and setting the edge. He just isnt ready to be a starter yet.

Craig M and DC Dolfan, why do you guys go out of your way to be unmitigated tools of the utmost horrenditude?

Not disagreeing with you. I love the kid. And I agree he'd solve the position for the next 10 years. I just don't see Dansby as an OLB as being good value.

I'll stick to my belief that pass rush and safety should be the priorities but the kid's a winner!

Not sure what you're looking at BUT Vernon & Wake are DE's not OLB's in a 4-3. Vernon will eventually leap frog Odrick & become other starting DE.

You keep saying we need pass rushers & while you can never have enough of those guys we just drafted Vernon & you can see that the light has come on.

There's a guy whose name you haven't heard alot about.

Jared Odrick - 1st round dud

fake long.

The Colts game should have been another win for the Dolphins. Dolphin Defense looked like a jr high school team, giving up 500 yds passing is unbelievable, and maybe one sack on Luck. Tannehill needs Gaffney now not two weeks from now, whats up with that? And yesterday showed that Mr Jeffery still hasnt done his job worth a crap. Terrible, terrible loss.

IMO, the pass rush has been good enough this season. Philbin said himself, that Sunday was a combination of pass rush discipline(technical issue), Luck making plays in the face of the rush, and only a few times the pass rush just not getting there.

You dont make pass rushing a high draft priority for these type issues. Not many nfl qb's will consistently make plays in the face of the rush like Luck did yesterday. Saying pass rush is now a high draft priority is a little over reacting imo.

What about the 7-8 sack game? Pass rush hasnt been a primary problem this season. Luck was able to make plays in the face of it and imo we played far to much soft coverage, failed to take advantage of 3 huge Luck mistakes, and had a couple blown coverages that left guys wide-ass open.

The Colts had I think 6-7 drives of 8plays or more. This wears down the defense as well as the pass rushers. A lot of diffrent things contributed to not being able to get off the field on 3rd downs. Not capitalizing on 3 Luck pic opportunities were chief among them.

Been a long day in here. Im out.

My bad youre right. Wake was olb in the 3-4 d. I would still like as true impactful 4-3 mlb to replace Dansby.

Just making tackles is decietful, that why Y-Bell's no longer here. The stat sheets shows Bell made many tackles. But doesnt show he was making because always allowing his man to make catches.

Dansby's the same, makes tackles but doesnt make nearly enough impactful plays.

This and Im really out. If there's a guy that a total unstoppable beast as a pass rusher available with our 1st pick. It's a no brainer to take him. But if not, we have too many greater need positions to address than select a slightly better than average pass rusher.

We have that type on the team already. Have a great buddy.

Not worth the price, let him go and draft someone or pick up a free agent. In no way is Jake Long worth what we are paying.

All due respect to Coach Pagano.....you're post game speech was GREAT....and you remind most people with a HEART BEAT that the game of football is miniscule compared to the game of LIFE.....

Having said that....

I can't even turn on the stinking sports networks without having to hear about the Colts this....and Andrew Luck record passing day that.....

I can't remember the last time the FINS played a game and got so much coverage.....even tho NONE of it is good.....

I put this loss...and EXCESSIVE COLTS COVERAGE directly on coach Philbin....for the 1st time in 8 games....i believe we were squarely OUT-COACHED.....i hope to NEVER see it again...its sickening......brought back the Sporano days....we had NO ANSWERS for 3rd and FOREVER...remember that Steeler game a few years back....this was like a replay....

any way.....

Coach Pagano....with everything I believe in that you get to "dance @ two more weddings".....

But I will never back you in your quest to hoist the Lombardi Trophy multiple times.....That has been MANY a mans dying wish....and "we don't always get what we want.....you get what you need"....

Everybody talking about how our secondary sucks especially SS. Well, he had been playing very well up to now. All those big passes thrown by Andrew Luck were double-covered. Where was our safety? What I saw were throws from a supremely gifted QB to a bunch of gifted, very speedy receivers. A load for any Team to stop at under 28 points. But, yes, it became evident that Miami's secondary is vulnerable to speed receivers.

Anybody noticed how after everyone of our losses most Posters here start talking about next year's Draft? HoHo!

You people Dashi the most view Tannehill as the second coming of Marino , but he`s not, he a good quarterback, but he s a rookie who wasn t 100% we should have played Moore , in fact Moore should be our starter , let the Rookie learn from the bench like most do, he`s already hurt , he didn t play that many games in college , if he was as good as Luck then yeah play him , but I think we all saw the difference between Luck and Tannehill yesterday , they are miles apart , Luck completed almost everytime on 3rd and long , Tannehill did not , he missed Fazano on a touchdown play Luck would have hit him, so would Moore for that matter, I was pissed they were saying Luck was so much better then Tanny before the game , but now I see why

Let's add more fuel to the fire. Why didn't Ireland surround Tannehill with speedy receivers like Indy has done with Luck, Ty Hilton, the other guy + All-Great Wayne + the TEs. You go now and complain to Ireland about it. Me? I will go cook now in complete pleasence of Mind.

Long has been on the declined. I haven't seen him play like his rookie year! Slow feet and just a big slow guy, not a great athlete.
It's time to move on if long wants too much money. Put Martin at LT. Draft a RT. Long agent will be asking too much and that is going to eat some of our salary cap!
