« Colts beat Dolphins 23-20 | Main | Kevin Coyle: Record day not a setback »

It was a long day for Jake and what that mean

It used to be that the overarching conversation surrounding Jake Long was about whether he indeed was the right pick as the No. 1 overall selection in 2008 over Matt Ryan. And the argument could be made that even if Ryan turned out to be a franchise quarterback, picking a Hall of Fame left tackle was still a wise choice.

Well, Long has not been playing like a Hall of Fame left tackle this year.

And on Sunday he didn't play like a Pro Bowl left tackle. Or even a good left tackle.

Matched against Dwight Freeney, who had been struggling with injuries and production prior to this game, Long was beaten soundly in the matchup. Freeney got a sack that stripped the ball from Ryan Tannehill and, ironically, Long plucked the pigskin out of the air and ran for a couple of yards.

It was a good save. But it wasn't a good look for Long.

He also yielded two other QB hits and at least one more pressure that forced Tannehill to get rid of the ball early. He also had a false start and had a holding call that was declined.

"Yeah, it appeared there were a couple of times, it looked like he got beat a couple of times," coach Joe Philbin said. "We'll have to take a look at the tapes to see if it's a technique thing. It might have been minor little things and some adjustments he'll have to make. But, yeah, we expect better protection."

Long echoed his coach after the game, giving credit to Freeney and his well-chronicled spin move. Long also promised an attempt at improvement.

"He got me on the one," Long said. "He gets off the ball quick and it's a hell of a move. He did well on that one and I just have to correct it and get better."

The truth is Long has not been Miami's best offensive lineman this year as he was in years past. That mantle has been passed to Mike Pouncey.

But the problem is where do the Dolphins and Long go from here? Long, you see, is a free agent after this season. And general manager Jeff Ireland is on record as saying he will not let Long get away from the Dolphins.

I get that because letting Long walk only creates another hole that has to be filled and the Dolphins have plenty of those as is. In fact, my column in today's Miami Herald makes the point that because quarterback Ryan Tannehill is good (but not great) the Dolphins have to surround him with more weapons and a better team to compete with teams that indeed do get great quarterback play.

And, by the way, Andrew Luck delivered great quarterback play against Miami on Sunday and has convinced me he's going to be great. Indeed, Luck has thrown for 2,404 yards this season. Peyton Manning? He's thrown for 2,404 yards this season.

The point is the Dolphins need to add talent, not lose some they already have.

Which brings me back to Long. It's going to be a hard negotiation if Long's agent, Tom Condon, is going to insist on having Long paid as the best left tackle in football -- which is exactly what Long was coming out of college as the No. 1 pick. Long was the highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL.

But after gutting through a couple of injury plagued seasons in 2010 and 2011 and still not playing at his highest level this year, I don't see how the Dolphins can justify paying Long like the best tackle in football. He's probably in the top 10 some games. But not every game.

Certainly not on Sunday.

"They're a hell of a defese. Their front line got a few on us. We just have to watch the film and get better and we will."

Your a retard , you know about as much as football as you do about me nothing , and if you were next to me now I`d wring your scrawny little neck

From what I'm seeing, most People throughout the World have not advanced beyond Internet 101 and We are already by 103(some of Us). We believe this tardiness by many is due out of Fear and not expressing what really is felt. Nobody is going to harm you on Internet for expressing your opinion. I have faced from Fidel Castro(the greatest Mafiosi of all Time) to all those Illuminati that pretended to rule the World. And I'm still here.(On Internet, probably the farther you are from People that you know in Real Space the safer you are).

I'm pretty sure that right now there is running all over this Country to make one of those Candidates win. It doesn't matter. It's been written.

Odin @ 7:14.....

I remember a week or so ago you did a post on players and defining moments.....you named off some plays that TRULY defined there careers.....

Armando has a defining moment as well....and his "define troll" statement......those TWO words will forever (in my mind).....live in INFAMY in connection with name Armando....

"define trol"l...lol....

The ultimate INSULT to the normal....respectful....and for lack of a better word....loyal posters on this site....

Odin, Yg...Missed opportunities are part of the game. You could go back and review almost every game and say what if, or they were lucky. Personally I think you either make the plays or you don't. For Luck he made way more plays then just being "lucky" on 2 that stick out. Also, offensivley we weren't guaranteed anything should Smith made that play. A play he certainly should have made, but didn't. You can examine any great performance and poke holes in them. Should we have made some plays that could have changed the course of the outcome? Yes.. His team did, Ours, not so much.

Rob in OC....

Thanks for posting....you're insight on this blog is sorely missed (by me anyway).....

I do have to say the call on Pouncey may have been BS.....but Long was false starting on almost EVERY pass play in the 1st half....and I think he only got ONE called against him.....so it evened out.....

Its seemed to me that the refs called back some HUGE Colts offensive plays on questionable calls...so if they negated our HUGE ST play.....well....they had plenty go against them as well.....we had EVERY oppertuinity to WIN that game....I don't think the ref handed them ANY of those 3rd down conversions.....we did that all on our own....

Rob in OC..WHAT UP!!!!

..The Pouncey penalties were a bit sketchy. I just wonder if the ref said something to him in the course of the game. He was flagged twice on what seemed like nothing. I am curiuos if there was a warning somewhere in there that we don't know about.

Also. Can anyone explain why the coverages were so soft for 3 plus quarters? I know Solomon wilcox had said that in the meetings with Croyle that he was concerened about being beat over the top. Our secondary really was given tough task when they were aligned so far off the recievers. I wonder if this has anything to do with the play of Clemons. He still takes poor angles. I can recall 3 plays ina particular where he looked out of position. I may be wrong as I don't know the exact strategy of the scheme. But to me it looked like there was a ton of confusion between the safties and the corners on some of the routes. Corners breaking off early, or in a zone with the wrong leverage for the help defender..In some cases no help defender. Jimmy Wilson on Reggie Wayne??? that is a win for them, and a poor job by us.

DD,

At times I really dont understand you, at times I do, this one I dont. So you're saying Luck wasnt "lucky" our defenders didnt capitalize on 3 of his "critical mistakes"?

Those were clearly mistakes. Dansby "dropped" the pic 6. Smith lost the easy interception in the lights when the Colts scored the td. Sean Smith "dropped an easy int.

Im sorry, but now Im totally miffed at what counts as "extremely fortunate" when a defense fails to capitalize on 3 apparent qb critical mistakes. If only ome uncapitalize mistake, you can chalk up to seet happens. 3 of them, no way.

jpao,

Hartline is NINTH in the league in YPC. I'm not trying to make him out to be a number one receiver but he is able to stretch the field unlike what you said about him. Doesn't change the fact we need to add a receiver, I just wanted to point out the fact that he is within the league leaders in that category.

DD,

IMO, the coverages may have been designed in fear of the Colts speed against this secondary. Coyles strtegy may have been, make Luck work his way down field and take advantage of mistakes, which we didnt.

Still the strategy worked, though gving up tons of yardage, the Colts only scored 23 points once playing on the shrinkened field. Would have worked perfectly if we take advantage of even one of 3 of Luck's mistakes.

You said, with the Smith missed final pick, there's no guarantee we make a fg. DD, man, the ball would have been spotted at the Colts 20yd line. There's no guarantee we miss the game tying fg to send the game into ot either. Your argument had no true basis.

CraigM,

Without a doubt Hartline can make plays 20-30yds down the field. Thats what would make him a great compliment to a #1 wr.

His high ypc is more due to he can make plays 20-30yds downfield, but thier not scoring plays. He often disappears in the redzone too. Yardage doesnt win games, Tds do. Hartline's nicebut we need legit scoring threats.

YG..Im just saying that Luck was really good throughout the game. I don't think that is debateable. If we would have made those plays, perhaps the conversation would be different today. We would have been talking about how we were opportunistic, we bent didn't break(which to a point is still true if you look at the yards v the score)..we can add the dropped td by them..that would have widened the score. We don't because it is inconvenient. That wasn't lucky, it was a play they failed to make that should have been. it would have rendered the game totaly different. I just think that almost every game could be gone over and looked at with missed opportunities. We had some good ones, they did too. I think it balances out in the end. If you want to just site those 2 examples and give him lesser marks ok. But you have to add their missed ones as well that helped us.

CraigM,

I would take a wr with a 11ypc and 12-13 tds over a guy with 18ypc and 3 tds anyday. The nfl is all about points on the board, not ypc alone.

DD,

In all of my posts I never said Luck didnt have a great game. You guys read parts of posts an adlib the rest of your agenda.

Again, whats so hard to understand Luck had a great game but also was very "lucky" our defenders didnt capitalize on 3 picks he didnt do so great.

Even the one Smith lost in the lights for the score, Luck "threw into double coverage". Thats always a mistake beit rookie or vet qb.

That dropped td by the Colt reciever was just arely "out of reach". It would hav taken "hurlean effort for te reciever to make that play. Luck's pass was a little off.

Why does it seem you guys are protecting Luck as if hew were our starting qb? Luck had a great game, but made some mistakes too. What are you Colts fans. Geeze, I actually watched the same game too. Shuld I not believe my "lying-ass eyes"?

..Yg. I thought the missed INT was on the 35. On the 20 makes it a much more managable field goal if we don't capatilize. My thought though was that Carpenter has been less then reliable on these late game opportunities. We had one good drive in the second half, but really were stalled. That is what I was getting at. I want to trust Carpenter, and hope his early season struggles are behind us. But be truthful. if we had a field goal of over 40 plus to tie..would you feel absolutley confident?

an Im thinking some posters drink before coming here. How many times do I have to say LUCK HAD A GREAT BUT MADE 3 CRITICAL ERRORS WE DIDNT CAPITALIZE ON.

WTH IS SO CONFUSING ABOUT THAT STATEMENT. SOMEONE PLEASE TEL ME BECAUSE MAYBE IM JUST CRAZY.

Justin Hunter meet your new QB, Ryan Tannehill.

DD,

30 OR 35, WHAT DOES IT MAT5TER. ARE YOU PROPHESYING WE WOULDNT HAVE GAINED A YARD? EVEN IF ITS ON THE 35YD LINE AND WE PICK UP 5YDS. IT'S A 47YD FG.

TALKING TO YOU FEELS LIKE TALKING TO A COLT FANS. YOURE GIVING THEM CREDIT FOR EVERYTHINMG AND YOUR OWN TEAM CREDIT FOR NOTHING.

DUDE WHAT GIVES?

Quick Note!

This has nothing to do with Sundays performance!

Just comparing Ireland to the Great BB!

D.Butler was drafted ahead of S.Smith! Butler being the pats answer with mccourtney as cb's! The Reason The Pat's have no secondary!

And yes! They got Talib for a 4th!

WE GOT RID OF VONTAE FOR A 2nd!!!

Well the Parcells stamp is still with the Dolphins. Jake Long not playing like a franchise left tackle and Misi face guarding like a female in coverage. How pathetic was that to watch. The failure to draft skill players at WR, TE and in the secondary (DB & Safety). The Parcells stay as VP which was really a job as GM with the power of all football operations. Expensive lineman were released and charged to the cap leaving very little space etc..How can anyone suck much worse than Parcells did.

DD,

MY POINT IS ONLY THAT WE DIDNT CAPITALIZE ON 3 LUCK TERRIBLE DECISIONS. YOU GO ALL OVER THE BOARD AND ENTIRELY COMPLICATING A TRUE SIMPLE STATEMENT. TPTALLY GETTING WAY OF THE ORIGINAL TOPIC.

NOT ONCE DO YOU SAY IF DANSBY MAKES THE EASY PICK ON THE LUCK ERRANT PASS IT WOULD HAVE BEEN 7PTS ON THE BOARD AND A HUGE MOMENTUM SHIFTER FOR US. BUT YOU ARGUE SOMETHING I ALREADY SAID, LUCK HAD A GOOD GAME BUT MADE 3 CRITICAL ERRORS WE FAILED TO CAPITALIZE ON.

MAN, I CAN I PLEASE HAVE SOME OF WHAT YOURE ON. IM SOEBER AS HELL RIGHT NOW.

..Herclian effort??????? that ball was right in the recievers hands. He dropped it..

You said something that is absolutley right. Why am I defending Luck??? Good point. Best point made today.

WHEN SMITH DROPPED "LUCK LAST CRITICAL ERROR" IT TURNED OUT TO BE OUR LAST BEST CHANCE TO EVEN TIE THE GAME.

CARPENTER MAY HAVE MADE OR MISSED THE FG. OR WHO KNOWS, BUSH MAY HAVE BROKEN A RUN FOR A TD DOWN THERE. SMITH DROPPED "LUCK'S LAST CRITICAL ERROR" SO I GUESS WE'LL NEVER KNOW.

You said something that is absolutley right. Why am I defending Luck??? Good point. Best point made today.

Thanks for the suck and blow job from Odin the Drunk lizard
ps.
Dumbo, I ranked at 105th corner back in the 2011 NFL according to to Pro Football Focus.
That was the last ranking.
Sunday I was once again the worst ranked CB in the NFL.
Next time keep you trap shut.
I do better defending myself.

Ah Home, no offense, but this is as stupid as you pretending to make predictions **AFTER THE FACT**.

Bhwaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

I'm sure most people here know this already, but in the vein of helping the Mentally Challenged, Pro Football Focus puts out WEEKLY Rankings during the season.

Just like I said, Smith is ranked higher now than at any other time in his career. Thus backing up Coyles contention that Smith is one of the most improved players on the Roster.

AGAIN........Just like I said.

PS: You sure used up alot of words, too bad they simply add up too "Complete Bullshyt"!

Just The Facts Homie-ROTFLMAO..........at YOU-Dooh!

PSS: Pretty impressive how you say 2011 was the last ranking, then in the NEXT SENTENCE, you prove YOURSELF completely WRONG - AGAIN!

Ha Ha - FVCKING BRILLIANT!!!!

..Herclian effort??????? that ball was right in the recievers hands. He dropped it..

Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | November 05, 2012 at 08:37 PM

HAD TANNEHILL MADE THAT EXACT SAME THROW, MANY HERE WOULD SAY HE OVERTHREW THE WR. LUCK DOES IT AND ITS THE BALL HIT HIM RIGHT IN HIS HANDS.

HE HAD TO MAKE A SUPER EFFORT JUST TO HAVE THE BALL HIT HANDS. WHAT WERE YOU WATCHING? IT FAR FROM AN EASY CATCH. LOL

Home is almost always right and you need rehab bad! lol

Posted by: Dashi against Odipunk | November 05, 2012 at 06:38 PM

ESPECIALLY when you predict the final score of the game **THE DAY AFTER** ROTFLMAO at this Dweeb ;)

You're a Legend in your Own Mind!

Of course it's been destroyed by Meth and Steel Reserves. But.......Ah........You GO..........Monkey Bu-oy!!!!

I BELIEVE SOME OF THE POSTERS HERE WORK FOR ESPN. ALL THEY TALKED ABOUT WAS HOW GREAT LUCK IS. BUT NONE MENTIONED THESE 3 CRITICAL ERRORS WE FAILED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF:

1. DANSBY'S DROPPED PICK 6
2. SMITH'S DROPPED PICK
3. THROWING INTO "DOUBLE-COVERAGE" IS ALWAYS A N0-N0.

THOUGH IT WAS A TD BECAUSE SMITH SAID HE LOST THE BALL IN THE LIGHTS.

I NEVER SAID LUCK DIDNT HAVE A GREAT GAME. i ONLY POINTED OUT HIS ERRORS AND THAT SEEMED TO RUN SOME DOLFANS THE WRONG WAY. I CLEARLY DONT UNDERSTAND WHY? LOL

Thanks for the suck and blow job from Odin the Drunk lizard

Ireland blows donkey dick and Odinscum laps it all up. lol

PS: FACE the FACTS, not the MEAT STICK!

Sorry about the all caps. Been drinking Cuban coffee and got a little excited. LOL

JPAO,

I wouldn't worry about Sean Smith getting a BIG MONEY contract from the Miami Dolphins.

Coyle has helped Smith out. He now has 8 more games to either make or break his career here.

And even if he hangs on, he won't be getting paid. He simply hasn't produced enough for any of that.

I hope he keeps improving under Coyle and cements the No. 2 spot. This way we can address other area of concern. If he doesn't, send him packing and find somebody that can. No sweat off of my........ah........No Sweat!

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

Why doesn't ESPN just crown the Colts now - I'm tired of hearing about it already - they beat a mediocre team at home by three points?!? Man, they're acting like this team are world beaters - wait until they play a good team. Luck played a good game, so what? I'm tired of hearing about their coach and his motivational speech before the game, blah, blah, blah.

Hey Kris and Darryl Dunphy,

Whassup bruddas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the shout out. My comp was down for a bit and I hate banging the blog from my iPhone. I miss reading/posting on my only Fins venting/exhorting venue.

Kris you are 100% right...we had every opportunity to win the game. Too bad as the team is at 3 very tight losses. Hopefully they can learn to start pulling them out with some mental toughness, concentration and a dash of good fortune.

Darryl D,

Good point on Pouncey. It may have been a warning thing. Maybe he picked up a little subtle move to draw defenders offside and it was leaked to the refs? Much like many QB's emphatic head bob on the hike.

Maybe the ref told him not to do something and he did it anyways? Just seemed freakin odd as he has been in the league a number of games now so things should be fairly auto-pilot for a snap.

Either way...the Fins are in a wildcard mix and still have a bunch of football to play. If they can win the ones they are capable of and steal a game where they are underdogs then maybe this could be a drought breaking year.

With any luck, Tannehill will continue to learn, gain experience and grow as an evolving QB. Every year is different with injuries, schedule and team make-up so I hate to write any furious finishes off. Seeing some teams get into the big dance from the 6th seed helps too but, I wouldn't paint this Fins team with that overly Aqua n Rose colored brush.

Sounds like we are all in agreement that single plays are not the real reason you lose or win games...those 55-70 "other" plays account for a ton.

Always a blast to see you two on and read your well thought out takes.

Cheers,

Stop blaming all the receivers Tannehill wasn t playing the same after Long let him get clobbered twice, my question is did he do it on purpose

Posted by: xtremewayz7 | November 05, 2012 at 07:13 PM

With all due respect, this is ridiculous.

Lomg is in a contract year and the consensus seems to be he's slipped or regressed. He needs to make a good showing to get that contract.

And you're wondering if he chose to get that new contract by:

1. Playing bad on purpose?

And then.....

2. Possibly being responsible for getting the new Franchise Rookie (8th round pick) QB inured on purpose?

Yeah, that oughtta secure him another 10 to 12 million dollar a year contract.

It was a nice football game only I think too many black players is not good for the game.

Allah knows best.

Should we have made some plays that could have changed the course of the outcome? Yes.. His team did, Ours, not so much.

Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | November 05, 2012 at 07:49 PM

I agree Darryl. And if you noticed, I prefaced my Luck/Lucky statement with: He played Fantastic.

I wouldn't even try to take anything away from Lucks performance. But playing Fantastic and getting Lucky aren't mutually exclusive.

I believe Luck was BOTH on Sunday.

What's that Armando? Tannehill isn't great yet? Or Tannehill will never be great? I'm sorry but it seems as if your contention in the story is the latter and if that is true then I couldn't disagree more.

Odin @ 9:48.....

Instead of saying Luck is "Lucky"...or great....or the 2nd coming....

why don't we just say what it is/was....

Luck played against the 27th ranked PASS D......27th before the game started...probably 30 now....

I said during the game...it was WAY more impressive for Tanne to complete passes against the Colts 7th ranked PASS D....

I was less impressed with Luck torching the 27 ranked pass D.....

You pathetic piece of dog doo. Did you actually just repost something someone said almost a week ago?

Roflmao,my God you're a f$&%ing loser.

Odinseye was 100% correct, you're obviously obsessed. Very weird.

The colts adjusted in the 2nd half and played conservative to win by 3 pts come on Sherman. Let the kids play the d@mn game!!!

Lol I can't stop laughing about that one!

Kris great point, didn't even think of that.

Phins 78...

You won't hear that on ESPN this week.....

but they will use it to bash us next week as we prepare for the Titans....

This trio of frequent posters are on record having used more than one name, yet are the same ones that complain when others do it.

Kris
Odin (obviously)
Phins78

We keep long records that date back years, so we know what we know.

Tannehill just doesnt have the IT factor. Matt Moore would've easily won this game.

i think long WAS a good LT. Hes been hampered by injuries the last few yrs, & i agree is prob NOT telling trainers of injury in contract yr. But i wouldnt even pay him TOP 20 money, let alone top 10 money. we can trade him & maybe get some value for him, & get someone younger, less money & that is healthy.

Tannehill is looking more like Henne every day. He's pathetic when it counts at crunch time.

On a serious note, I'm just curious. You've stalked me on multiple Dolphins Blogs(At least 3 positively).

You've admitted to fantasizing about me and are CONSTANTLY attempting to engage me.

And somehow, you always seem to have quick access to tons and tons of my posts. Also, I know you don't dig through the archives everytime you want to re-post my stuff.

This leads me to only one logical conclusion:

You keep an "Odinseye File" on your PC. Wow! Deny it all you want, but it's too often and too repetitive to be anything else.

So let me get this straight.

You stalk me RELENTLESSLY! You shamelessly flirt with me and "Come Running" every single time you see me here. And now, we realize that you actually copy and paste my posts to an Odinseye File on your PC!

Thats..........ah........Pretty Crazy Dude! I don't know if I should feel flattered or terrified - SERIOUSLY!

And you wonder how we KNOW you would just LOVE "Gumming" you "Up" some Odinseye-LOL!

I got yo number Freak! But Homie don't play Dat.......unfortunately enough for **YOU**.

One last question:

Does Armando get pissed off when you "Accidentally(wink, wink)" call him Odinseye in the middle of the night?

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

Phins 78....

I know your probably gone...

but...

What is really disasapointing to me is the fact that we coudn't run the ball.....Colts RUN D was ranked in the BOTTOM 5 of the league.....

Either our run game is DEAD....or PHILBIN and SHERMAN need to device better schemes and plays to get the RUN going again....

Otherwise we will be dead in the water...going forward.....

Kris, the D's just stack the box against the run knowing Tanny cant beat them passing. Putting in Matt Moore would prevent that and open up the run game.

Zap-Zowie BATMAN! Me thinks Robin is MORE than just a "Little Wierd".

I've had an epiphany! Now I know why my Troll Be-atch gets so upset when I mention my "Favorite Hotties"

How Cute! Him gets Jealous - ROTFLMAO!
