Kevin Coyle: Record day not a setback

Dolphins defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle is a proud guy so he cannot be too happy his defense  -- until now effective -- was shredded by Andrew Luck on Sunday. Luck established a rookie record for most passing yards in a game.

It was a rookie record.

But a record nonetheless.

This is what Coyle said:

(On the defense allowing 13 of 19 third down conversions) –“It’s obviously very disappointing and that’s been one of our strengths throughout the year. We’ve been consistently getting better in that area. For a number of different reasons, we didn’t get it done yesterday. I think it was a combination of things. They made some plays against us. I wish I had a few calls back in the game. I’ll be the first one to take blame for a good portion of it. I think the combination of them executing and us not executing the defenses that we normally, we didn’t do anything different. We tried a lot of things as the game went on to try to change it up. We rushed them, we covered them, we spied the quarterback, we blitzed them. It wasn’t like, I went back after the game, wanted to see exactly what we called in what instances and tried to determine if there was a pattern or a trend. I don’t think it was that. It was just one of those games that they made some plays and we didn’t and we’ve got to do better. We’ve got to rush the passer better, we’ve got to cover better and I’ve got to do a better job of getting them in position to make the plays.”

(On the team’s struggles blitzing Andrew Luck) – “We hit him 11 or 12 times when we actually got to him, but we didn’t sack him only (but) one time. He made a couple of throws as he was going down to the ground. He made a couple of throws running away from the line of scrimmage. The long touchdown, if you go back and really look at the play, he just threw it up there. He never even saw Sean Smith overlapping the play and really laid it up there where we might have had a chance to make the play. We didn’t make the play. But to his credit, he’s very good in the pocket. He’s got great poise for a young player. As you watch him on tape, you see things that he does that you see a lot of veteran players in the league not do. In other words, when the rush is coming in his face, he’s not fazed by it. He doesn’t change his way, his demeanor. He’ll have a great pocket presence to slide and keep a play alive and we lost the edge a few times and he kept the plays going. I was really impressed with him. Even talking with some of their coaches prior to the game, they were concerned that he does it too much trying to extend plays and they’re worried about that fact. Certainly, yesterday, he made those.” 

(On if yesterday’s performance was a big step back for the secondary) – “No, I don’t think it’s a big step back. It’s a disappointment for all of us and that’s what we talked about today in the unit meeting with everybody, not just the secondary. We’ve been building something here since Coach (Joe) Philbin has come here and our first meetings with the players in April. One game is not going to set us back and I mean that and I told the players that. I said we’ve got a body of work where we were making a lot of progress and the secondary is one area where we have made a lot of progress. I don’t know if there’s anybody that has played the game or coached the game that hasn’t had a game where you come off and say, ‘How did that happen?’ Well, this is one of them and, I’ve got to be honest with you, I’m disappointed. I’ve never seen us get in a situation where we had a team in third-and-long and weren’t able to cash in. That’s always been something we’ve been pretty good at throughout the season here. Certainly, I don’t negate the fact that these guys, when you see them come to work every day the way they do, the way they prepare. It’s a bump in the road for us and a big one and we’ve got to get it turned around right away. Certainly, one game out of eight where we did not perform at the level of our standards, it’s not anybody else’s standards, it’s ours, is very disappointing. And we’re going to take that and energize ourselves as we get prepared for this next one. We’re going to come out and play a heck of a game come Sunday.”

(On the pass defense in the first half of the season) – “Well, rankings, you can twist rankings and statistics a lot of different ways and obviously we’re giving up way too many yards. Yesterday, we gave up way too many big plays in the game. You can also look at the fact that I think we’re somewhere around six or seven in the league in terms of completion percentages against us. I think that there’s been some positives in that sense. We’ve also had 45 passes-a-game thrown against us. By far the number one attempts in the league are against us. Tampa Bay is the only other team that has over 40 and they’re like at 41 and then everybody else is below that. But it’s a combination of we’ve got to do a better job in the coverage and we also have to continue to do a good job in the rush game (and) against the running game. I think, when you make teams throw the ball as much as we are, usually good things are going to happen sooner or later. It didn’t yesterday unfortunately for us. But the bottom line is, even with that being said, we were in the game with an opportunity to win the game at the end and we didn’t. The biggest disappointment… We had two scenarios that happened in the game – the one at the end of the first half where we had them third-and-long and they converted to kick the field goal was a big play in the game. Prior to that, I should say the third-and-nine in the red zone. It’s another area that we’ve been particularly effective in this season. I think right now Chicago’s the only team that is ahead of us in red zone defense in terms of touchdowns per attempts in the red zone per series in the red zone and that’s a good thing. But we gave up one on third-and-nine. We had them right where we wanted them. They gained nothing the first two plays and we gave up a touchdown there. We gave up the one right there before the end of the half and then we had them third-and-12 backed up and that play where they dumped the ball off and we missed a tackle (and) they converted and then eventually went down and kicked the winning field goal. That play was a big swing because, had we stopped them there, they’re going to be punting right around their end zone or out of their end zone and we would have had a chance hopefully to get the ball in good field position at that point, but we didn’t and they went on to continue the drive and score the winning field goal. Like I said, we’ve got our work cut out for us, but these guys have gotten better and I believe in these guys and we’re going to go out there and take the second half of the season. We look at it, we’re eight games in and honestly my wife had to remind me of this on the phone last night because I wasn’t feeling to good, but she said, ‘You know you guys have lost three games by three points, each of them.’ And I hadn’t even thought of that to be quite honest with you. That hadn’t even crossed my mind. When she said that, it kind of dawned on me that, yeah, we’re making progress, but we’re not where we want to be and we can be better. I think the players know that and we’re not going to accept anything less.”

(On if this Sunday against the Titans if the team will copy what the Bears did against them yesterday) – “Well, I’ll tell you what, the Bears did a heck of a job. They started fast. Yeah, we liked to do that, start fast. Actually, the first play of the game was a nice conversion for Tennessee and (Charles) Tillman came from behind and stripped the guy after they gained about 18 yards or so. It didn’t look good initially for the Bears, but they certainly swarmed on defense and they’re playing great defense. We’ll look at them and anybody else that we can get a good thought from and implement it into our package.”

(On how it affects preparation not knowing who the Titans starting quarterback will be) –“Not a whole lot. They’re kind of a system team. They’re going to run their offense. I don’t think the one quarterback changes things dramatically. So we’ll see. I think we’ll know a little bit more as the week goes on because I don’t think the young guy (Jake Locker) has practiced yet and if he’s out there practicing, getting reps, there’s a good chance he’ll play. If not, they made hold him off until after the bye week. They have a bye week after we play them.”

(On how much of a difference it has made with Richard Marshall being out)– “It certainly (has) not helped us. You’ve got a veteran player there who gives us that veteran competitiveness and leadership in the secondary, both on the outside and also in the nickel. Jimmy (Wilson’s) role has expanded. Jimmy’s played well at times. I think I mentioned to you guys last week how impressed I was with how he covered the slot for the Jets (slot receiver Jeremy Kerley) who’s a good player too. And yesterday, he struggled at times. But like I said, there’s not a guy that’s played the game and the best one’s in this game that haven’t had a game where you got beat and you made mistakes. We just seemed to have too many guys at one time do it and we’re going to get it fixed. We’re going to do everything we can to get it fixed.”

It's funny, either Mando or the diva Omar said this is the best shape he's seen Long in during his Miami career, yet, he's given up the most so far this season. I think Long is embarrassed and can see him working his a** off this offseason to get that step back that he lost. Putting on some more weight as well (but still be athletic enough to drive upfield like Pouncey can). Losing best OL nod to Pouncey isn't terrible, Pouncey is an amazing center, but when you're captain Jake Long, #1 overall pick in the draft with a 70 million dollar contract you shouldn't be losing that title to anyone. Although he's making us rethink that Long vs Ryan debate he is still extremely valuable to this team. We expect him to be flawless, his draft position and contract say he should be, so when we get something less than that we want him to go. Again, if he demands an unreasonable contract than show him the door, if it's any way a reasonable contract show him a pen to sign it

As for this defense: which defense allows 3rd down conversions of 20 yards, 23 yards, 16 yards, 15 yards, 11 yards, 10 yards then there is a problem. How in the world do you let those up! 10 and 11 yards are excusable, it happens. 15 yards once in awhile happen. But the conversions of 20+ yards are atrocious. Some people blamed Tannehill (bs) some blamed Sherman's playcalling (bs) some blamed the refs (bs, they were on our side the first 3.5 quarters) and some blamed our lack of turnovers (bs, though it woulda helped!) It was our atrocious 3rd down defense that did us in. Stop 4 of those conversions and that's 3-4 more drives we have on offense. With 3-4 more drives we were bound to hit an FG or 2 or even a TD to win that game AND they wouldn't have scored 23 points if we could have stopped them.

Boulder, I respect your opinion as a good poster on this blog but...

1) Philbin is bringing in guys who want to win (ie: Davis/Marshall trades)
2) The OL spending 3 hours of a WESNESDAY night trick or treating is not the reason they lost this game. They are young dudes with social lives. It's not like they drew a knife on their wives (Marshall) or showed up so hungover/out of shape they could barely practice (Davis) they spend one night out as an OL bonding experience.

I'm still livid about this loss, should have been an easier win than the Jests game, but this post just seems absurd

All I heard form guys from last year was 'Irleand f-ed up because he traded a 3rd, a 5th and 7th for Thomas'. The argument was that Thomas was hurt and they should have drafted Demarco Murray later. I heard Demarco Murray this and Demarco Murray that. 'Thomas was a bust', because he couldn't stay healthy.

So I just read that Murray will be out AGAIN this week against the Eagles. Played 13 games last year and FIVE so far this year. Are the same guys who were calling Thomas a bust, now also calling Murray a bust? Just curious.

Kris, I watched the Giants/Steelers game at 430 (after the Miami game, since that's the market game I get, obviously, in NJ) and Issac Redman ran ALL OVER the Giants. A 3rd string RB ran all over them. We can stop the run without a problem (Solai's niche) but he isn't there to generate pressure he's there to consume 2 OL. Let Vernon learn the ropes, he came out of college as a JR and has shown flashes and improvement. If he comes onto the scene him and Wake will be a tandom to reckon with. Ware, Freeney, JPP, Tuck, Justin Smith, Jared Allen all took some time before they became dominant. Not saying Vernon will be one of them one day but a shadow of them will be good enough to strike fear in the opposing pass blockers

MiamiD20, I'm sorry but this team has been on this cycle of one good game/one bad game for 3 years now. This year we got lucky because we had a bad game against the rams and still won. So the problem is not coaching. The problem is team mentality. Some of these players need to go because they can't mentally play consistent from game to game. If they play good it gets to their heads.
As for trick or treating. The reason I said that was because Long said he was surprised by Freeney spin move. Really? It's been his move for 10 years. What this means is that Long didn't watch enough tape on Freeney to know that he's got some good moves. Instead of trick or treating he should be watching tape. he's making 12 million/year. It's his job. I don't care if he's young or whatever. If I was making that much money I'd stay in and do my job and go out after the season is over.

It's no surprise the secondary have gone back to their old ways. Playing way-y-y off the receiver. Smith has improved but inconsistent. They actually gave us some hope prior to Sunday but......

What does surprise me is the D-line & LBs. Luck is way too quick to be caught from the outside. So, it was obvious to me the D-line which is supposed to be good, couldn't penetrate & LBs mop up. Maybe D-calls? I don't know.

Either way, the offense cannot rely on the D to bail 'em out. They have to put more points on the board. When we play top shelf teams, 17 or 20 points won't get it done.

No we weren't the better team but the game was there for the taking. Smith or Dansby make those picks, Tanehill doesn't overthrow Thomas and we very likely win that game. We could have and should have beat the Cards and Jets first time.

D.Thomas was the 2nd best Rookie RB! Last Year! I compare him to Ronnie Brown! Even down to the concussions and fumbles! M.Ingram was picked ahead of him. People wanted Ingram over Pouncey! How has that worked out!

Plus, we have L.Miller! He's more talented! And is even Younger and Faster! Some compare him to Thurman Thomas! Which isn't far off.

Having 2 young RB's that are talented and Run Hard! Is a Good Thing to have! And with Reggie Sometimes running hard and other times running scared! Is not good for a running game!

Boulder, I think the problem with our team's mentality lies with Smith and his thought process. First he wasn't mature enough, now he thinks he's all that. It's (possibly) he ego. However, our team the last 3 years was poor because of our QB play. Philbin is weeding out the players that are here for a contract and not for the desire to win. Give him 3 years and I think we'll have a team that resembles the Packers rather than a team that continues to flop. I need to go back and watch the game again. TO me the game was there for the taking with us up 17-13 at the half. Why weren't the Dolphins more successful at running the ball, specifically in the second half. My guess is we went away from the run too early. The opportunity to control the clock was there but I don't think the team was committed enough to the run. I would have liked to have seen more of Miller if Bush isn't healthy.

We normally do just fine in rushing the passer. Top 10 in sacks. It was a bad game against a good QB who's been prone to mistakes until Sunday. I knew they would move the ball on us but I thought we would eventually force him to make a mistake.

Tannehill played a fine game and is progressing but unfortunately he's not at the point yet where he will overcome a bad game from the defense. But he will get there.

We need four players 2 WR/Te and 2 for the secondary CB/FS and we are there with one more year of Tannehill marinating. NO need to be stupid and jettison good players like Jake Long and Sean Smith - only makes the team worse.

We need an RB badly

Those thoughts are now vastly changed (with the help of Bush as well). RBs are a dime a dozen nowadays. OL is more important than an RB. It seems any RB, drafted high, low, or not at all can do a fine enough job. Sure you have your breakout RBs that change games like Peterson, McCoy. But they aren't necessary if you can pass and protect. Some people want us to draft an OL after the 3rd round. Problem is, they all suck after the 3rd round! Rarely does an undrafted OL make it, very often undrafted RBs make it or are suitable.

Craig, when you have 40 million in cap space and many of your players are free agents yes you can make some big changes. Please don't give the hey we should be 7-1 right now. You are what your record says you are. We're a 4-4 team. We've been an 8-8 team or worst for the last 4 years. So it's true that we have one good and one bad game. We should have won at Indy but we DIDN'T.
We're a 8-8 franchise right now and have been for a while. Our offense has been terrible in the 4th quarter for a while as well, whether henne was QB or Tanny is QB or Moore is QB. Not sure how keeping the same players is going to fix any of these.

MiamiD20. our offense was bad in the 4th quarter when it matters most under Sparano and Philbin whether Tanny is the QB or henne or Moore. Yes QB play makes a difference but I think it's more than that. Other parts of our offense has an issue in the 4th quarter. However, great QBs like Manning, Brady or even Luck play their best in the 4th quarter. They make everyone else around them better.
We start fast and fade in 4th quarter when it matters the most.

From what I saw...the giants have given up 1,062 yards this season...and that averages out to be 118 yards per game...

The FINS have given up....671 yards...for an average of....83.9 yards per game...

I understand that doesn't tell the whole story because you have to factor in team....and how committed a coach is to running the ball...and yadda..yadda...yay....

I still think when ALL of the #'s are crunched...and all the stats are skewed....we will find that our DEFENSE is created in the PARCELLS 1980/1990 mode of "STOP THE RUN"....the problem is its 2012...and its a passng league now....and Philbin just NOW told Ireland that this season....

By the way, anyone getting bent out of shape and asking for things to be blown up in the offseason simply does not understand the game at all. We have a rookie QB. Rookie Qbs do not equal super bowls. None has ever won one - EVER. This is a process. remember, we are five years removed from a one win season and being a literal expansion team. It takes time. The Texans took way more than 5 years to become relevant. Sure we would be better if we found our QB in an earlier year but we didn't so it is what it is. But watch - next year will be a coming of age for this team as long as Tannehill keeps developing.

And I know people will say, look at RG3, he's amazing - uhm 3-6, look at Luck - well he's a once in a generation prospect and he's only one game better.

It takes time!!!

P.S. Anyone now who doubts the Colts didn't throw the season last year has to have their head examined - it's bloody obvious. Clear as day obvious.
