Mike Sherman: May be too late for Egnew (this year)

The Dolphins have needed more production from their tight end position for several years now. It simply needs to improve and while Anthony Fasano is a solid player, he's not dynamic.

So some people hoped when the Dolphins invested a third-round pick on the position, the issue would be resolved. But Michael Egnew has so far not been able to be that solution.

And his chances of being that this year are practically nil, according offensive coordinator Mike Sherman.

"We're at that point in the season where you can't teach football weekly," Sherman said Thursday. "It's cumulatively. There's so much volume that if he hasn't had that rep two weeks ago, there's things we'll call in the game that we haven't ... we've walked through it. We've talked about it. But we haven't run it through full speed because there's not enough plays in practice.

And how does that affect Egnew?

"He doesn't have the benefit of cumulative learning of the offense so it limits him," Sherman said. "That's why it's so important and I tell rookies all the time, you have to come out of the blocks early because the guys that come out of the blocks get the reps. He didn't do that early. Now, he's getting better. He's working his butt off. I'm really excited about what he's going to be. But it's just harder to put him in there ahead of Fasano or ahead of [Charles] Clay at this juncture."

So don't expect Egnew this year -- at least not at this juncture. The Dolphins view of him today is it is basically a redshirt year.

And that leads me to this:

So any young offensive player that didn't get out of the blocks early, as Sherman says, is pretty much out of the question later in the season?

Seems to me the problem there is not only with the rookie's slow start but also with a system or approach that basically doesn't allow for a player starting slow and then bursting onto the scene once he gets his NFL footing.

New Orleans tight end Jimmy Graham, for example, was raw and needed a lot of work when he was a rookie. And he didn't have a catch in any of his first four games and had only one catch through five games. But did the Saints basically store him away until his second season?

Nope.

Graham was given the chance to grow in-season. In his final eight games of the 2010 season, he caught 26 passes. He scored four touchdowns the final three games of the season. Graham, who had played mostly basketball at the University of Miami, developed slowly as a rookie. But the Saints made room for that development and plugged him in as he improved later in the year.

Doesn't seem the Dolphins can do that.

YG,,,YOU R MAD B/C YOU SUPPORTED THE WORST GM IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL .JUST AFTER A FEW WINS ...THEN THE LOSSES STARTED TO MOUNT AND YOU COULDN'T FLIP ON THAT,I=OTHER WISE THAT PHRASE WOULD STICKS TO YOU.....

I think all Egnew needed was some confidence - some guys need kicked in the a**, some don't. It looked to me like he was so afraid to make a mistake that he was handcuffed. He'll be fine - put his ass in there. How much worse can the offense get at this point? I'm thinking draft already anyway.

If it is true that we have a lot of cap space for next year, then Ireland has done a good job as a GM. As a Personnel Man, we would like to see more Star Players acquired by him here in Miami.

That's why Armondo was the Offensive Coordinator in the Super Bowl in Nineteen Neverty Seven. Sherman could learn a thing or two from him

ALOCO,

IM NOT MAD AT YOU, JUST SPEAKING THE TRUTH.

I have already stated that guaranteed money makes it a much tougher job as a GM to just base your decisions on personel, you cant release someone who you will still have to pay millions to that is dead money as it relates to the salary cap.So its not all about making player changes anymore and I dont know if it ever was.

King, when you have to change, you gotta change.

TO
BE.............

Change is good when it's needed.

Only Humans can not change. The rest of the Stuff is changing all the Time.

3rd round pick cant be a bust, by definition--might be disappointing, or not a great pick.....but not a bust--bust can only be in Rds 1 & 2, when expectations and draft value is MUCH higher (his draft value, taken 78th, is only 200....vs 1,800 for the 4th pick, for example)--not a bust, not even close......lighten up folks.

We, are mad as hell at the Jewish People. They don't want to change and they are holding us back. Well...

The way Colin Kaepernick is starting out tonight against the Bears. Alex Smith may not get his starting job back.

Im sure some genius here will say lets trade for Alex Smith if this happens. LOL

5 mins still left in the 1st qtr and Kaepernick is 7-8 118yds 1 td and a fg drive.

Would have loved to see Miami draft kaepernick in 2011. Jeff Ireland was too smart and would have had none of that.

A few more Odricks, Egnews, Tannehills and we will be all set.

That's one hell of an OL that SF has.

Here. My pick for the SB. San Fran.

Kaepernick is the backup in a well established offense on an established team who went to the championship game last season. He has play makers all over the field.

Had he been drafted by Miami he would have learned Dabolls offense only to have to throw all of that knowledge away and learn a new one this year. He then would have been starting this year with a mediocre TE, no stretch the field receiver, a pro bowl LT playing like he belongs in a toilet bowl, an unsettled right side of the o line, a defense with no good cbs, and a non existent running game. So basically the exact opposite of the 9ers. Geez, when reading that out loud you really have to feel sorry for the poor shmuck who got thrown into this mess as a rookie and is now being blamed by a select few morons for the teams record.

My point is he would not, imo, be playing this well in Miami this season even if it were just one game. We are not the 49ers.

oscar,

Kaepernick's looking like one helluva qb SF has. Alex Smith may never see the starting job again if he keeps this up.

Phin78,

Moot point anyway. Ireland drafted Mike Pouncey. Not that anythjing's wrong with, at least not yet anyway.

I just hope in 203yrs Pouncey doesnt become Jake Long.

2-3 yrs

Wasnt Aldon Smith another guy Ireland passed on?

I know all about Kaepernick, YG, as he was one of the QBS I researched year before last. He was not NFL ready then. Now, under good Coaching he might be. But he has to show it under pressure. He has some kind of cannon in that arm, though.

Don't you see that even if you put Lucas in the 49ers O they are going to move? It's all Jim Harbaugh and his schemes.(Ireland was right then).

..I think Aldon Smith was the 7th pick. I'm not sure that was a case of Ireland passing on him..He is a wrecking crew..That whole SF D-Line is a wrecking crew.
As far as Kaepernick goes..You have to give him credit so far. This is the Bears he is facing. Not many established vets have had a start like this. Kudos to Harbaugh, and his system. This is a lesson in modern day WCO football tonight. So far.

I don't see that happening with Pouncey unless he sustains a bunch of injuries. Also I'm not giving up on Jake Long like everyone else. The guys having a rough season, it happens. I don't buy that it's the cumulative injuries, he was in the best shape of his career in the offseason and said he has never been as healthy. He got hurt, missed the preseason and a lot of camp and is not playing at 100%. But Jake is a f%&*ing warrior and I have faith he's working hard to get back to form.

Problem is if he doesn't turn it around this year he will either have to take a pay cut to stay or have to agree on a heavy incentive based contract. If not I don't think we keep him. And that would suck because there's another hole in the team that we would have to address, Martin there means wasting another draft pick on a linmen and hoping he can start.

Broder, is that SF D quick!

..Is it possible, even likely that Long would take a pay cut on a better team? Why would he agree to do it here? It may not metter if the team decides to franchise him. But say we don't. What would keep Long in a Phin uniform should we try and low ball him. IMO the only way we keep him is to ante up, or franchise him. Ask yourself this..If you were Jake Long and you had the opportunity to play on a contender for a bit less would you do it? He isn't getting any younger. And it may be awhile before this team is ready to be a serious contender.

So no cbs, crappy SS, no depth at LB, No stretch the field WR, questionable rbs and o-line. If this team doesn't see a dramatic turnaround there are no excuses, just fire him. I don't want to hear any crap about allowing him to finish what he's building with Philbin. He will ruin Philbins career, Im more sure of this every day. Let Philbin bring a young up and comer into the fold, someone who has scouted for west coast offenses. Raid the Packers cabinets if you have to but get someone who understands Philbins philosophy. Enough already.

Is not Long's decision, DD, it's Philbins if he wants to keep him. Personally, I don't see Long here next year, He just hasn't done well in the zone bloking scheme.

And I was sticking up for Sherman before the Bills game but he's starting to remind me of Henning a little inflexible and outdated. I hope he proves me wrong but more importantly I hope he doesn't fool Philbin the way Henning fooled Sparano. Both coaches younger and looking up to their mentors while not seeing the truth about their offenses.

Not giving up on Sherm yet but I'm getting that queezy feeling we Dolphins fans are all too accustomed to.

DOLPHINS PROBLEMS ARE NOT THE ROOKIE TE WHO DOESN'T PLAY,THERE PROBLEMS STEM FROM THOSE WHO CHOSE TO PICK A PLAYER WHO CANNOT PLAY! IRELAND HAS A PROBLEM SELECTING AND EVALUATING SKILL PLAYERS. TANNEHILL IS OKAY BUT WHERE IS HIS WEAPONS? KNOWING THE PLAN WAS TO DRAFT AND START A ROOKIE QB HOW CAN YOU PLAY HIM WITH OUT PLAYERS TO THROW TO. BESS AND HARTLINE ARE VERY GOOD PLAYERS AND THIS IS HOW YOU CAN EVALUATE TANNEHILL THERE PRODUCTION AND CONSISTENCY HAS NOT SUFFERED. BUT IF WE HAD THAT DEEP THREAT (MIKE WALLACE) WHERE WOULD WE BE. NEXT YEAR WE NEED A DEEP THREAT RECEIVER( 4.3/4.2 SPEED WHO IS DFFICULT TO COVER MAN/MAN. ONCE AGAIN (MIKE WALLACE) THEN DRAFT THE WIDE RECEIVER FROM WEST VIRGINIA THAT'S FROM MIAMI. NOW THIS TEAM HAS WEAPONS THAT CAN MOVE THE BALL AND PUT POINTS ON THE BOARD. THAT IS THE PROBLEM! WATCH SUNDAY HOW THE DEFENSE WILL BE VERY COMPETITIVE FOR UP TO 3 QTS BUT THE SCORE MAYBE WILL BE AT MOST 17 AND THEN PROBABLY LOSE! THIS WILL NOT STOP UNTIL THIS TEAM HAS OFFENSIVE WEAPONS TO CHALLENGE A DEFENSE DEEP!

Daryll great point and is the main reason I'm scared we lose him. He's only taking a cut to go to a contender or playoff team but then again how many contenders/ playoff teams are going to need a LT coming off the worst season of his career? The good teams seem to be set at LT so there may not be a market for his services. Maybe Ireland does what he says and locks him up. If he does it before the end of the season he could take advantage of the downgrade in Longs play and get a home town discount. Of course Ireland would probably screw it up so who knows.

Its not Sherman. Its Tannehill cant execute. No accuracy and way too many tipped passes and poor decisions. Leaving MVP Matt Moore on the bench will be Philbins downfall.

Baily steadman is his name 5 10 195 very good hands and speed

Maybe 3 rd pick

We really need 2 guards on the line for the run game

Question?

The Season Jake was HURT!! Did Jake Come OUT PUBLICLY!! AND Say he Was hurt???

Dashi doesn't remember Jake Complaining for Really Being Hurt!!

Oscar Ur Right On that the Fins will Probably Keep Around 30-40 Players from This Team! For Next Year!

Which when U look at it!! It's a Pretty Good Young Roster!! Add to that!! We Have over 10 Picks next Draft!! And Over $50 Million To Spend!! U can Expect to See About 15 New Rookies Next Year!! And About 5-8 Young Veterans!!

Ireland has done his job!! If anyone remembers Parcells First Year!! And The Massive Makeover!! Before Evaluating The Roster For 1 Season!! The Miss Use Of Money!!

The Fins are doing this the right Way!! Again!! As Fans!! We have been going thru the Worst Decade In Dolphin History!!! And We WANT IMMEDIATE RESULTS!!! But This is Philbins 1st Year!! And If U really Love The Team!! U know wishing for a Victory is Futile!! Doesn't mean we shouldn't at least win 2 More Games!!

Just Saying going 8-8!! Or Better!! And Making The Playoff's!!! IS ACTUALLY DETRIMENTAL To The LONG TERM SUCCESS!! OF THE TEAM!!!

Remember we are BUILDING thru The Draft!! Not Like Parcells!! Who Built thru Free Agency!!

Hallelujah Terry King. I can not believe they started a rookie QB and gave him no weapons or veterans to throw to. Watching Luck throw to Wayne this season and hearing the announcers talk about how it has been tremendous for Lucks development to have a veteran WR help him learn about NFL defenses ,,,in gamehas made me realize how short sighted and inept Jeff Ireland is.

We need to let jake walk to set us up for success

Bye!! Biatch!!

Gettind a top WR for Tannehill will be like getting a top WR for Henne. USELESS!!

Dashi sorry but I respectfully disagree. Ireland did nothing to help his coach or rookie wr. There is also no depth on this team due to poor draft choices. The players are fine, but that's it. The young players have time but are still questionable. But Dashi, look at our CBs. Why isn't this position settled yet? Why do we have no depth at LB? Where are all of Irelands good WR picks? How many WRs has the guy drafted who havent worked out in the past three years, more than a few. Bess and Hartline should be 3 and 4, not one and two? How about the TE position? Where's Clay? Why is a #2 TE our #1? Where is Egnew, not even going to hit the field this year and its questionable if he will make a difference when he does because he has shown nothing.

Our biggest needs this offseason are WR and TE. This offense needs a major injection of talent. Irelands track record has shown that he can't evaluate those positions. I don't see how this team takes the next step with Ireland making these important decisions.

Sorry Dashi, maybe not TE. Clay and Egnew could come on so thats prob not a biggest need. Pass rush specialist then LB are prob 2 and 3. SS upgrade, shutdown corner. Sheesh, good thing we have some cap space to sign a couple of players. Unfortunately Philbin likes to build through the draft. Unfortunate because with many needs and Ireland picking Im not comfortable.

People keep saying Philbin will tell Ireland which players he wants, that they will work together. Fine. Now tell me who's helping him pick defenders. Coyle? We don't even know if this guys a keeper. And actually now that I'm thinking about it, if a great defensive mind is on the market we have no reason not to try and get him. Loyalty shouldn't trump upgrading when it comes to winning.

On that note, how would everyone feel about Rex Ryan being our defensive coordinator if he gets fired? I'm all for it. Ryan will bring swagger to our defense and get our young guys beliving and confident imo.

Philbin should highly consider starting Matt Moore against the 49ers. The way Campbell's getting hit tonight we wont have Tanne going into the future.

Let Moore get killed. He's not the future anyway.

Okay, all of the sudden it seems like a perfect time to leave. Oh well.

Phins78,

Rex Ryan had Ray Lewis, 2 press corners and two ball hawking safties. He brought one of them to NY with him.

Rex likes to bring the heat. Doing this you need man to man press corners and ball hawking safeties. One of the greates mlb's(Lewis) in nfl history doesnt hurt either.

Rex would have none of these in Miami. Bart Scott even followed Rex to NY. There's very little Rex would be able to do with sh*tty inconsistent D.

Did the Fins do their due diligence to see if Kellen Winslow could still play?

I don't think so.

Looks like most teams have 2 QB's better then Tanny.

Armando,

Detroit could soon be signing Winslow.

Forget about Egnew. Are the Fins looking to for any FA?

I understand Colin Keapernick plays with great Offensive pieces but this kid is amazing. I've watched him roll out of the pressure and hit his back up T.E. D.Walker in the hands downfield were it was flat out dropped. Great touch and rocket arm on the vertical toss and how about that inside blitz were he hits V.Davis on that 3rd & 12!!

I've seen enough of the 49ers in the last 2 Seasons to tell everybody they need to play a perfectly scripted game in order to win. The run and D have to do it and execute flawless Football but with this Kaep kid they seem much more explosive, a totally different dimension and A.Smith is done this kid is the 49ers future.

Looks like Harbaugh made the right call and brought his kid around slowly but surely and yes in Miami he may have been irreversibly damaged but WOW he's doing this to the Bears D at will throwing at Tillman and evading Peppers and Co. up front!! Oh well we also traded up in last Years RD-2 for D.Thomas!! Yeah!! I don't know the specifics of the Kaep trade but bet Harbaugh gave up less than 3 picks for him!!

fin4life,

Where do guys get the crap qb's would get ruined in Miami? It certainly isnt based in fact. We drafted 2 crap qb's Whute and Henne. They would have been the exact same anywhere they went.

Tanne wasnt quite ready to be a day 1 starter, but Moore was so horrible the preseason, Tanne became starter by default. when a guy comes into the league he either has it right away, or isnt far away from having it.

Coaching staffs help players refine hat they already have in them. Guess what happens when players dont?

When it came to Pat White and Chad Henne specifically. This scouting dept and its gm did a piss poor job of recognizing true nfl level incoming talent.

I guess Miami ruined Pat White so bad not one team would come near when he was cut. The cfl or whatever the league was cut him too. Henne cant beat out a terrible Blaine Gabbert. Guess that's Miami's fault too.
