Sunday proves Tannehill an untouchable while Bush is not

Reggie Bush fumbled in the first quarter on Sunday. It was his fourth carry of the game.

And he didn't get another the rest of the game.

Truth is he didn't see the field the entire rest of the first half. He did enter the game in the second half, but by then the game was a desperation affair for the Dolphins and they were passing practically every down. So Bush got no second half carries.

Afterward, Bush admitted he had been benched by coach Joe Philbin for fumbling.

"I was benched," Bush said. "And I deserved it. If I was the coach, I would have benched myself."

Interesting. Honest. And very respectful of Bush to let his coach off the hook ...

Because Philbin's approach with Bush is worthy of examination.

First, the coach could not bring himself to admit he benched Bush although that is exactly what he did. When he was asked, the man who benched Bush for fumbling, fumbled over his words on the benching.

"We had planned to – we’ve got a game coming up real fast – we had planned to use guys," Philbin said. "We’d been using Daniel Thomas and we used Lamar [Miller] sparingly last week. Our hope was to, not for this reason, but our hope was to spread the plays out a little bit."

That's a fair explanation except that earlier this year after a Bush fumble, the Dolphins coach benched Bush similarly. And the club didn't have a game four days later that time.

And, of course, it was merely a coincidence that the so-called spreading of plays began immediately after Bush fumbled.

But here's the question: Philbin had a quarterback on Sunday who threw three interceptions. That's three turnovers to Bush's one. One of those interceptions was even returned for a touchdown.

And Philbin stuck with Tannehill until the game was well decided midway through the fourth quarter when Miami trailed by the final margin of 37-3.

And Philbin was equally displeased with Tannehill as he was with Bush for his misdeeds.

"He had gone ... I don’t want to jinx the kid, but he had gone 98 throws without them," Philbin said of Tannehill's interceptions. "So I don’t know that you necessarily have to throw three. I’m not blaming him for every single one either. I don’t know that it’s absolutely mandatory to have a game like this."

So why the difference in how Bush and Tannehill get handled?

It's simple, folks.

Tannehill is the future. Bush is not.

The fact is the Dolphins are going to live or die with Tannehill this year. And next year. And probably the year after that, as well. If he plays well, he's going to play. If he plays poorly, he's still going to be on the field this year and next year for sure.

That simple.

The Dolphins are committed to Tannehill. Rightly so, I might add. They have a huge investment in him and that's the way it's going to be.

Bush is another story.

What you saw Sunday is basically how the Dolphins feel about Bush. They love him. They start him. They roll with him.

But only as long as he doesn't make a mistake.

And if he does make that mistake ... the Dolphins feel they have viable options. Daniel Thomas, whom they like gets the next most carries and actually had more than Bush on Sunday. And Miami also has rookie Lamar Miller in the stable. Coaches like him, too. Those guys are the future. Those guys will definitely be here next year.

Sunday proved Bush is not an untouchable.

And because of that fact, Bush's future is uncertain. He is unsigned for next year and it is certain he will not get a new deal before the season ends. When he eventually signs (with someone), he'lll probably get a deal that pays him in the millions. If you combine what Miller and Thomas will make next year it might only barely reach into seven figures.

This is not just a math problem for Bush. Thomas and Miller are younger than Bush. At the running back spot, age is important because younger typically means fewer carries and less wear. So unlike Tannehill, Bush's future in Miami is not certain just as his carries play to play are not certain.

Bottom line: Ryan Tannehill is an untouchable.

Reggie Bush is not.

Starks/Soliai are the reason Chris Johnson is the first RB in 22 games to run for 100 yds. (well, them and the fact that people see our DBs and lick their lips like they're about to steal candy from a baby).

4-3 zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

My biggest problem at this point is when we get burned a few times this team gives up. Our heart disappeared last week VS Indy!!! WHY??? Why have we all the sudden just started playing like robots. Why has our Oline just disappeared. This team has got to get players that can come from behind and not lay down sit on the bench with their head up the A**. In our wins and the 2 OT losses we played our hearts out and I was so excited because I saw our people playing with New England type heart. Now its back to the same ol same old

Beerphin,

Sorry I thought you were advocating taking a RB high. I'm not in favour of it. Worst case scenario we go with Thomas and Miller and sign a vet, a Michael Bush kind of guy. I'd rather see something like that than a first or second round RB. We can't keep going this route for a guy who burns out in 4-5 years.

Didn't see the game yesterday but I've said all year that Clemmons is the weal link on the defence. I agree with DC. Safety would be very near the top of my board in April. Should be one of our top 3-4 picks.

He was just off Craig. Some INTs were his fault, at least 1 wasn't (Fasano let himself get abused by a LB and didn't fight for the ball). He wasn't overly mobile, but not really under threat too much of the game. I think there was one sack (maybe 2). Honestly, I stopped paying close attention in the 3rd quarter, took to the blog to let off steam. He looked like he did in the Houston game, rattled, inexperienced, ineffective, basically like a rookie. But like I said yesterday, that's only 2 games out of 9. For a kid who was inexperienced in college, not bad. Peyton looked like crap a game or 2 this year too.

Tannehill is pathetic. 3 pts at home? He's the one that should be benched not Reggie.

What's Philbin saying guys? Is he angry is he frustrated? Has he moved on and getting ready for Buffalo? He's got his work cut out for him getting these guys ready for Thursday in Buffalo.

Tannehill is an INT machine. TD's and pts are hard to come by when our QB stinks.

Tannehill has really played in 8 games as a NFL starter and only 19 in college. It's expected he will have games like this and he needs the experience. Bush is an experienced RB and isnt the future. I dont like that he was sat an entire half either but the message has been sent. Chargers had to send the exact same message except stronger to their premier back.

Tannehill doesnt get off scott free either. Philbin was pretty blunt in his assessment that ball control is the golden egg. He ripped Tannehill pretty good but the kid needs to play through adversity. Bush doesnt.

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE TIRED OF THE LOSING! HELP MAKE A CHANGE!

Philbin sticking with Hennehill is like Ross sticking with Irescum. Idiotic.

Bush is what he is and that wont change. At the end of the day he has been one of the more consistant leaders on offense and probably on this team. Maybe Bush wouldn't have to dance so much if th O-line would block somebody. The guy has too much talent and experience to not be given the benefit of doubt after his first fumble. I prefer downhill runners too but I think Reggie is a great change of pace and should be a weapon in the passing game.

RB in the 2nd or 3rd rd....

Joseph Randle OKST
Stepfan Taylor Stanford
Giovanni Bernard North Carolina
Kenjon Barner Oregon

Three words. I give up.

QB in the 1st rd...

Matt Barkley QB USC

Beerphin,

I'm going to give you a big fat NO to RB in the 2nd or 3rd. Sorry. I want to see OLB/DE, S, WR, CB, TE addressed before we even think about RB. I don't believe RBs win you games and we have two on the roster with very limited miles on them. I don't want any more high picks wasted on running backs going forward.

On Signing The Fin Players in the OffSeason. What kind of Message would it Send To Starks And Long About Negotiating Contracts! IF THE FIRST CONTRACT U OFFER IS TO BRIAN HARTLINE!

We All Know! Even though Some Of You don't want to admit it! Long will be the 1st one to get Paid! He's doing Us a Favor! Lowering his Value! To Market Value! Still the Best LT In Football! So No $100 Million Dollar Contract! But He Will Dominate the $100 Million Dollar Man! This Thursday! And I still Believe Jake's Not a 100%!! He's Still Recovering From The Abuse Spo! Put Him Thru! Heck! Philbins been More Cautious! With Bush! Than Spo Was With! Long!! The PizzaMan! Made Long Play on 1 Arm For More than Half A Season! On A Broken Shoulder!! Long Is/Should be the 1st The ONE!! That IRELAND!! IS CALLING!! JEFF IRELANDS!! PRIDE AND JOY!!! JAKE LONG!!!

NOT HARTLINE!!

Long And Starks!!! Are the First 2! The Fins And Ireland MUST ReSign!

Followed! By S.Smith And Hartline For the Right PRICE!! Clemons, Bush, And Fasano! Seem to be on the Way OUT!!!

Rightfully So!!

Draft picks are useless with Irescum as GM.

Tannehills biggest problem is batted passes. He still cant get lift in the throwing lane. Defenses know that and they will batt um down until he figures out how to stop it

Big surprise that the doomsayers are out in full force again today. They went into hding during the 3 game win streak. It's obvious they've been working on some new materials. My guess is the live blog was rampant with that kind of talk during the game yesterday.

Olivier Vernon this year takes care of OLB DE as far as safety goes IMO Clemons and Jones have earned their positions this year. I don't think a rookie unless drafted in the 1st rd could supplant either one of them. I do agree we need help at CB but the same could be said about CB or safety late in the draft as RB... I do agree though they should go after one early. IMO the run game has been bad the last five games. Whether you want to jot that down to injury, or blocking i dunno but I do know they need to run the ball a whole lot better. Offense in general needs the most attention.

Dashi I hope your right about Long resigning at a reduced rate. But IMO reality is Tom Condon will demand he is the highest paid LT in the enite league. It's that simple. There's no way in hell Tom Condon give us the home town discount... His track record proves it

they will probably franchise Long this year

Starks I'm beginning to question the importance of right now. I think he is playing injured. The reasoning behind Starks being let go could be that Odrick really doesn't fit in a 4-3 defense at an end position. Move Odrick inside and start Olivier Vernon opposite Wake. Too many times yesterday Johnson broke containment on the outside. Need more speed rushing from the outside. Odrick is 6'5 305 not really ideal for 4-3 DE

Beerphin,

We sees things a lot different. Cleemons is a NOTHING on this team. He had a good game a couple of weeks ago but he's a disaster back there. I think you'll change your opinion once a good safety is drafted and starts contributing right away. Everyone complains about our corners and while they are not getting it done they aren't getting the support necessary from Clemmons and even Jones at times. Time for Clemmons to go....ASAP. I would think a safety taken in the second or third round could contribute to this defence from day one and do a better job than Clemmons.

I keep hearing Vernon, Vernon, Vernon. While he's made some big playes for us this year and I think he'll get better, I don't see him as being consistent enough right now and that makes me nervous. If there's an impactful OLB/DE there for us in the draft, I don't hesistate picking him in the first round. Where's Vernon been the last two weeks? Where has eveyone else been? Not good enough. Vernon would be good depth.

Beerphin, do you frequently lick your arms?

Its back to work in free agency for Ireland Bush was his best signing thus far.His best draft choice is still up for grabs between Pouncey and Tannehill and others who might turn out to be bargins but as far as free agency Ireland will probably lose his best work in Bush.Do any of you bloggers disagree that Bush was his best free agent signing?

u can't fix stupid, the team is loaded with morons.
lol
and who pix the players.?

Evaluation year. Philbin has seen what Bush can and can't do. It may be time to look at the other two RB's in real game situations to be able to evaluate. Little to no talent in the back field. Smith might be a better fit off the bench but not as a starter. Safety position and DB needs to be addressed. Gaffney looked decent on a couple of plays. The soft schedule we thought we had has not worked out in our favor. 4 of the 7 remaining are going to be tough.

What woman could resist a man who spends most of his time on a pointless football blog?

I'll bet the ladies are just lining up for this bunch of great catches.

did the phins bus show up at the joe yet.?.
lol

It is true that Miami doesn't have a true Game changer Star like that RB agains us yesterday is.

lol. just flash the $$$$, women are real dumb that way and it's an instant panties dropper.
lol

oscar, talk with irecorn.
lol

oscar, the team is full of game changers, just for the other team.
lol

Vernon the last few weeks??? have you been watching the games? Everytime the kid is in the game he makes impact plays. Reminds me of Wake and what we saw from him his first year. Clemons and Jones both have 2 picks already and around 40 tackles. They aren't that bad... Mark Barron and Harrison Smith were the only safties that were any good last year. Both gone before we picked...

I tried to tell him, 2 watt, draft Matt Kalil, RG3, Luke Kuechly, but he paid no attention to me.

Now Mando Made a Great Point! ON HOW IT'S NOT WORTH!!! PAYING BUSH $5 MILLION! WHEN U CAN PAY D.THOMAS AND L.MILLER!! LEST THAN $1 MIL!! COMBINED FOR THE 2!! THAT ARE WAY YOUNGER!!!

NOW HEAR DASHI OUT!! Pe'o For Te'o!

WE HAVE A $16 MILLION DOLLAR!!!! PROBLEM IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS DEFENSE!!!

ZACK BY HIMSELF MADE MORE PLAYS THAN THIS DYNAMIC DUO!!

DANSBY HAS 1 SACK! 0 INT'S! AND ZERO!!! 10+ TACKLE! GAMES!!

BURNETT! IS EVEN WORSE!!! 1.5 SACKS! ZERO INT'S!! AND 54 TACKLES IN 9 GAMES!! MEDIOCRE AT BEST!!

MISI WHO IS GETTING PAID!! $500k!!!!! AND IS BELOW AVERAGE OLB AT BEST!! REALLY BAD AT PASS COVERAGE!! IS REALLY A DE!!!

HAS 1.5 SACKS!!! 2 FORCED FUMBLES!! 1! 10+ TACKLE GAME!!

Half a Mil!!! HAS MORE IMPACT!! THAN $16 MILLION!!!!!

The ONLY PLAYER WITH HIS NUMBER IN THE 50's FOR THE FINS!! THAT IS ANY GOOD IS O.VERNON!!! 2.5 SACKS!! 1 FF!! Block Kick! 1 Defensive TD!! AND IS ONLY A ROOKIE!! PLUS HAS BETTER PURSUIT!! AS A DE!!/ NICKEL LB!! THAN ANY OF THE REGULAR LB'S!!

YET!! SOME OF THE MOOROONS! THINK IT"S WORTH OVERPAYING FOR SUBPAR LB'S!!

HECK!! IF PARCELLS!! COULD CUT ZACH!!! IRELAND CAN ADMIT TO PARCELLS! MISTAKE AND TRADE DANSBY AND BURNETT FOR ANY PICKS!!! OR JUST CUT THEM FOR CAP REASONS!!

But The Fins! NEED TO REPLACE THE PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN PLAGUING THIS DEFENSE FOR THE LAST COUPLE YEARS!! U KNOW THE SLOW FOOTED LB'S!!! THAT CAN NEVER CATCH UP!!! TO RB'S AND TE'S!!!

wringling bros. = odick trying to chase down a qb."insert clown music here." lol

I know most attractive single women are looking for successful, well-rounded men with a variety of mature interests and a high degree of intellectual curiosity, but I'm way more into finding pasty, physically inactive guys who obsess over football games like a 14-year-old would.

Beerphin,

Where was Vernon last week against the Colts? How about yesterday against the Titans? That's what I'm talking about.

YOu want to talk stats but how many big plays has Clemmons given up. To me that FAR outshadows anything two picks and 40 tackles might account for.

Wondering why we arent doing the RB shuffle like the Saints are doing with Ingram-Ivory-Thomas. Seems to be working with them.
Bush-Thomas-Miller combo would keep defenses on their heals a bit.
Miller is the future. Hes got the flash of Reggie and the power of Thomas.....use him please.

'memebr playin sand lot?
and when the qb would trow the ball and every1 would yell ball! ball! ball!.
koa misi is asking every1 to do dat 4 him and the other putrid d players.
lol

Who the hell is this Teo that YG is obsessing about?

And your mom err lady is doing what as you type here lol? Making you a pb@j? With the crusts cut off of course.

kojak oscar.lol

The PHINS have holes still to fill .
First let's start with the GM. Ross needs to close that chapter move on fire Jeff before he does more damage,
Now. Holes that the PHINS need to address
Pass rusher. Line backers. Misi can't cover no one Dansby is probably out of here, Odrick close to being label a bust! Starks free agent he will get payed more somewhere else. Two safetys. Two corners. One for nickel. And smith needs to be challenge next year, smith still making too many mistakes.
Offense. Wide receivers. TE. RG RT
Jerry backup at best. Can't run block. Martin playing out of position. Long. Wants to much money. Richie starting to get on Philbin bad side. Need RB bush is out of here.
Next year we probably have lesser win because new players and they have to learn new system Rookie mistakes. Learning curve
I love my PHINS but we still going to suffer for a little while longer!!

Vernon isn't a starter... He was named special teams player of the week again last week. He blocked another fg... What are you talking about? Yesterday he made a tackle running back up the field from DE position that saved a TD cuz a CB whiffed on a tackle. He is making plays when fgiven the opportunity.

so far i've noticed one play Clemons was in the wrong position. It's a team game. Can't blame just one guy for broken plays for the most part.

Hmm..., Clemmoms, Jones just average and will always be so. We need the Polamalus, the Ed Reeds safeties. Always go for the Best, Ireland, ya hear?

Beerphin,

Isn't your argument that we don't need to draft a OLB/DE because Vernon is the answer? So what I'm saying is, how do oyu know? Where's the proof? You're basing your opinion on special teams play? Because he's got 2.5 sacks on the season? What are YOU talking about? If he's PROVEN to be the answer, why is he not getting more playing time? I like the kid but to me he's proven nothing, other than he's a useful player. Unless it becomes clear that he's the answer in the second ha;f we need to draft to fill the position.

I disagree. One interception was a tipped ball. during another interception, Fasano was clearly mugged and pass interference should have been called. The main problem was that both the offensive and defensive lines got pushed around, again, as it happened during the Colts game. We lost the game at the line of scrimmage against a lousy defense.

Beerphin,

Agreed! On Tom Condom! That Guy! Gets Top Money!

But If We Remember! Jake's 1st Deal! IT WAS DONE AS SOON AS THEY SAID IT COULD BE DONE!

Jake(Condon) is Probably the ONE WAITING FOR THE OFF SEASON! TO SET THE MARKET!! BUT THE CONTRACT IS ALREADY WORKED OUT!! DAWN IS WORKING ON THE FINAL DETAILS!! IT"S JUST A HUGE CONTRACT!!

Jake Is Doing His Part! By Not OutPlaying His Market!! IT's Miami! U Think Jake Wants to Go AnyWhere? U know the Legacy! He Leaves! IF HE GETS ABOUT 5-6 MORE PROBOWLS!! AND A COUPLE SUPERBOWLS! ALL IN THE SAME UNIFORM!

Ireland! Knows! What it Does For His Legacy!! JAKE IS THE ONE PRESENT!PARCELL'S LEFT IRELAND!! A SUREFIRE HOF!! FROM DAY ONE!!!

There were so many missed tackles yesterday that they can't be counted all. Vernon might not be the second coming of Ray Lewis but he has some kind of Engine.

Mii is doing all right. As a SSLB they are asking him to cover Guys 30-40 yds downfield. Not bad.

Miami have one true class player on the registry:Reggie Bush, and some of you want to get rid of him???? Mind you the same people are also saying get shut of our next best player,Jake Long,as well. There are some crazy guts out there.

Beerphin,

You're kidding man! 'ONE PLAY'. Now you're just playing difficult. Why don't you ask the blog if there's just been 'one play' that Clemmons has been off. It's a consistent thing with this guy. He's VERY often out of position or taking the wrong angle. Happens an awful lot. I guess the guys don't all these mock drafts having us picking a safety must just be pulling it out of thin air then?

Jake's market value is what it is. Despite his play so far this season there will be twenty teams lined up for a bidding war. He will get top LT money any ways you look at it.

As for Vernon 2.5 sacks, 1 ff. 2 blocked fgs. A TD off a punt block. And impactful tackles when given the playin time... That right there is evidence he should be given the opportunity to start and play more.
He has been getting more plays on the field steadily. But I don't think it's in their plan to just give him the job over Odrick or Starks this year, barring injury. He's a rookie and he's shown he belongs. Coaches need to do a better job finding him opportunites.

Dashi I like your posts and you know your dolphins lore but you do realize pitt ne and arizona all desperately need a LT right? I think we are going to have competition for Longs services big time.

As far as OLB goes I do like Arthur Brown Jr. from K State. Miami kid that I think would fit nicely in the D.
