Patriots can sometimes erase homefield advantage

The stands will be filled at Sun Life Stadium Sunday for the first time in long time. The game is sold out. And barring a late wave of no-shows, the Dolphins are expecting up to 71,000 people in the seats.

Yep, New England at Miami is a big deal down here.

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, about 20,000 of those seats will be filled by Patriots fans. The Dolphins expect their fans will fill approximately 50,000 of the seats while the rest will go to New England fans.

Let's face it, the weather is beautiful in South Florida this time of year so some Pats fans have obviously made a long weekend out of this game. And, of course, their team is really, really good, not to mention very entertaining.

But before you out-of-town guys that only rarely attend a Dolphins home game start calling out local South Florida Dolphins fans for their inability to fully fill their own stadium, please stop.

Think about this:

The video below shows it could be much worse.

The video below also shows that sometimes local fans that actually do pay to go to the games feel they have a right to get their money's worth. And when they don't get their money's worth, they can get very angry and even turn on their team.

The video below was shot at Met Life Stadium, home of the New York Jets. The video was shot at halftime of the Thanksgiving Day game between the Jets and Patriots.

The Patriots basically dismantled the Jets. And Jets fans, expecting a good performance from their team, turned on the players they had spent money to see. The Jets were down 35-3 at halftime and as they headed to their locker room to regroup, the locals ripped into the players. The Patriots eventually took home a 49-19 victory.

It was ugly. (It was also beautiful, in my opinion, if you get my drift).

Anyway, the point is the Patriots are a dangerous team. They travel well, especially this weekend. They can play so well that the locals turn on their team.

So the Dolphins have to be wary of this Sunday. Playing well would obviously be a cure for such behavior in the stands so maybe the Dolphins can deliver that and make the point moot.

Here's another thing: The idea of opposing fans making up a big chunk of the crowd at Sun Life is not new. I remember during the early 1990s, Bills fans would travel in droves to Sun Life for late-season meetings between the Bills and Dolphins.

It got so obvious and the Bills would play so well at Sun Life that Buffalo players started calling it Rich Stadium South.

And that was during much better days when the Dolphins were in the playoffs practically every year and even went to the AFC Championship game. So this is not a new phenomenom.

As to the anger and vitriol spewed by Jets fans against their team, that has happened here also. Think back to 2007. The Dolphins were 1-15. Folks were very, very angry.

What we have now is not anything like that. Many fans have moved on from that kind of reaction. Many are simply staying home and waiting for the team to start winning again before returning to the stands.

At least that's more pleasant for the players than what you see below:

Local area fans are front-runners, that is not new.

Out of town fans are freeloaders, this also is not new.

It's very easy to claim you're a better fan than the locals when the most $$ you invest if $200 on directv. It costs that much to attend just one game and that's without buying any food or drink.

"...If Bush is the underperformer among skill players, left tackle Jake Long is the culprit on the offensive line. Long is ranked as football's 44th best tackle this season, according to ProFootballFocus.com. By comparison, Long was ranked 21st in 2011, second in 2010, and second again in 2009. At 27, Long should be in the prime of his career. What's up?"

Hmmm.....44th best Tackle this year & 21st last year. Well, apparently the Pro-Bowl is just a popularity contest b/c Jake is the leading vote getter among Tackles again this year. If we're serious about rebuilding it's time to cut bait with Long & Dansby.

If the coaches overwork the players in practice, which they generally do when an important game is looming, and the players have nothing left for the game, then the dolphins are going to get KILLED Sunday! This would also imply that we still have moles on our coaching staff who is being paid under the table for their scheming assistance in wearing out the players in practice. This foolishness has costed us 4 games this season. The guys do not need practice; they need REST; they already know how to play! Remember the true and famous words of Allen Iverson:" it's just practice. Not the game; it's just practice!

Frank,

It's one thing for the people who live in the area to not attend games (whether it be the heat or the cost or the inconvenience) BUT the television ratings for the Dolphins in the area are also terrible!!! How do you explain that??

Frank, I've spent over $12,000 on Miami Dolphins tickets not including travel costs - so yeah, i can talk

You're right, Mando. Awesome video! Loved it. Hahaha.

Mark,

This year???

I dunno, David, I think the special teams could use some "don't allow a runback for a TD" practice. Maybe not a full week.

As for Tannehill, I can accept that he's probably figured out how not to pass to the end zone already.

No, in my lifetime.

"As to the anger and vitriol spewed by Jets fans against their team, that has happened here also. Think back to 2007. The Dolphins were 1-15. Folks were very, very angry."

Not sure who is more pathetic--the Jets organization or their fans??? Absolutely love seeing Rex get humiliated.

Mark, from last blog I wasn't necessarily sayin you were advocating the wildcat (didn't want it to come across like I was putting words in your mouth) what I meant, overall, is that the Pats defense is horrible but not as porrous as ours; well they are just as bad, our offense just isn't as good, unless we come up with something (ie: wildcat-esque) we aren't going to have a prayer

Didn't mean to promote that you were saying something you weren't sorry, didn't mean to come across that way

TV viewership is an interesting topic, WHDP.

I'm not an expert so take this with a grain of salt, but the truth is Miami-Ft. Lauderdale rating are bad compared to other footballm markets. But compared to the market itself (Miami and Ft. Laud.) the Dolphins win in the ratings every week.

The bottom line is there's a lot to do down here on a Sunday afternoon. Boating, beach, shopping, parks, cruising.

Who wants to go out in November in Buffalo? Everybody. Who wants to stay inside on a Sunday afternoon in South Florida? Nobody. Those who decide to do that, are generally watching the Dolphins.

are u on crack mark? for this product?

When the team is wore out, they can't pickup the slack for Tannehill. This seahawk's game was a showing of what a rested dolphins team could do. I just hope they don't foolishly wear the team out and expect them to defeat anyone the rest of this season. Every team will be playing lights out football from now until the end of the season. We can get one of the last wildcard spots with a 9-7 record; but we have to score a lot of points though. If the offense stop fully depending on the defense to keep them in games, then we can make some noise on both sides of the ball.

"No, in my lifetime."

Mark,

That's good. Not sure that spending $12,000 a year on this particular Dolphins' team provides a great return on your investment. LOL!!!

I stopped going to games two years ago. Too expensive, not a good product and I can watch from home very comfortable.

I still root for the players. I still read this blog every day. I still love the team.

When the economy improves and the team improves, I will probably go back. I don't think that makes me a bad fan.

WHDP's,

It only validates what we discussed yesterday. Long is not worth resigning for the money he thinks he's worth. That doesn't mean he isn't worth having at the right price but his days as a top earner & high performer are over. Unless he's playing with another injury that no one knows about.

Long could be a good RT so it's possible Martin & Long could swap. Under no other circumstance should Long be a dolphin, because if he is, he'll likely be the higest paid one.

The would further cement Ireland's joke status. If Ireland can, he's going to spend top dollar on Long & Smith & NEITHER are worth the hefty investment.

Both should go but ccould stay at the right price

Frank,

Yeah there's nothing to do here in Manhattan...LOL.

Trust me when I tell you people take both going to games (games that are played in NJ) & going to sports bars VERY seriously.

That's awesome. The Jets (except Tebow) deserved that.

I was at a bar watching the game last night. Had some darn good Buffalo Wings!

I like how a "similar video" from youtube was "Jags destroy Fins 62-7 in playoffs"

"The would further cement Ireland's joke status. If Ireland can, he's going to spend top dollar on Long & Smith & NEITHER are worth the hefty investment."

I can totally see Ireland breaking the bank for both players. If he doesn't sign both Hartline & Starks then I'm going to be pissed!!!

I bet Tanne will never lose a game 62-7 like Marino did. Watch the highlights of that game. Marino was skin and bones, weighed about 180. It's good he didn't get seriously hurt in that game.

Verdad is absoulutley right 70% of So Fla residents dont even speak basic English

Willy,

Of course it doesn't make you a BAD fan. I don't believe that you have to go to games to be considered a GOOD fan. Now that I'm 40 I think going to games or concerts in large venues are a major pain in the a@@. I still do it from time to time but much less than when I was younger.

Have i got just the perfect WR for this team!

re-heat,re-heat,re-heat,re-heat.

LOL @ Jeff Ireland's Talking Brown Eye

The manatees are moving a little right, .. no a little left, ...no, no make it right.

Gosh this is exciting, let me share it with Tim, i know that poor baahstahd has nothing going on.

"Let's face it, the weather is beautiful in South Florida this time of year so some Pats fans have obviously made a long weekend out of this game. And, of course, their team is really, really good, not to mention very entertaining."

The Pats have been on some role since Brady took over @ QB in 2001 so it shouldn't come as a surprise that their fans continue to support them. I can't even imagine what it would be like to see us win one SB...

It's an easy $200 afternoon going for a phins game. Not every one can afford 8 home games in a season. Given that the Heat play from October there is just so much we can afford on sports especially before Christmas. Also S. Fla has one of the lowest blue collar pay scales.

With only 20,000 attending the last 2 games do they really have a home field advantage? There may be more to see Brady play but how much more?

It is good to see a Stadium rocking. I don't know how many People were in the Stadium last week, but I felt some +vibes. Not that We will surely win, but I like Good Vibes.

Marino always choked in the playoffs..

Fin4Life From Last Blog.

Can Agree. If We are Fully Rebuilding. J.Long Making $12+ Million a Year Won't Be Good. But If I have to Pick Between Long or Dansby!! I'm Sticking With Long! THE REAL DOLPHIN!

We Can Franchise Him. And Draft the Kid U said in the 3rd and Develop him as a OG! Than Replace him the Year After if Jake Keeps Declining!

Dansby makes No Sense as a Dolphin Anymore!! AND HE REALLY NEVER LIVED UP TO HIS CONTRACT!!! Even Marsha played Like the Star they were Paying.

And Fin4Life.

UR TELLING DASHI THE OG IS ONLY SUPPOSE TO HELP "ONLY" THE CENTER!! U Sound Like The One that Doesn't Know what they are talking about! And Even Then Incognito is not pulling his weight!

THE LG OR OG! Because the Job is the Same on Both Sides!! The Guards Help Both The Center and The Tackle!

If the Fins Are Only Making Jake Cover ther Perimeter AS U Say(Which is ignorant by any Coach)!!! The LG Has To Cover Long on the Inside!! Whether it's a DT or a DE!! Depending on the Scheme!! Or A Blitzing LB!!

Again in the Rams Game When T-Hill Gets Blown Up!! It Wasn't J.Lane That Missed his Block!! Incognito Went outside not In!!

Incognito Is Probably the DUMBEST OL The Fins Have! And He Doesn't Fit the Scheme!

That's Why Teams Stunt!! To Confuse Blocking Assignments!! Or Stand Players Up!

And If Jake is Not Top 5! Tell the NFL AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC THAT! Only Fin Fans Think Jake Suck! 31 Other Teams! Will Take Jake!! Cause I bet Cleveland Fans Want Thomas Gone! Saying the Same thing That he's Overrated!

Yes his play has gone down this Season! That Doesn't Mean! Its all his Fault! U more than Anyone Fin4Life Knows. Jake Was Beaten Up By Sporano! This Will be Jake's First Season in a Long Time! That He is Healthy For The Whole Season!! By Now Jake Would Be Playing With 1 Arm! And 1 Leg! Under Sporano! He Will Have his First OffSeason In a While To Train!! Not Heal!!

Dashi I quit reading your non sense post when you posted franchise Long, why would you want a 15 million dollar hit from that bum?

Clue, I stopped reading Odins(aka Dashi) over a year ago. Its incoherent babbling lol

Agree with Dashi. In last weeks game in the forth quarter there was a play where Long took the DE to the perimeter and opened a throwing lane for tannehill and the pass was a 30 yard completion. It was great to see the O line pushing the D line in a passing situation instead of back pedaling and getting beat.

28 teams wish they had our OL.

Dashi, no one reads your posts. Seriously. Not trying to be a jerk. Just too long and rambling. We skip right over them.

See Ya Sunday

Thanks for stopping by!

Can you imagine if Hennehill didnt have a great OL? YIKES!

anyone that says "I agree with Dashi" is odin, as no one else would actually read that rambling nonsense

Man that video was a thing of BEAUTY.....love it!!

Well ya know Mean Jean!

Whatcha gonna doooooooo...when Daniel Thomas, and the Hulkster, run wild on yooooou!?!

homefield advantage??Miami???...sorry armando, this article cannot be taken seriously enough to read it after trying to maintain that miami has an edge at home...maybe you need to go check the last ten years and start taking pictures of miamis Homefield stadium during games to understand that they are an absolute NON-FACTOR!!!

Can we sell Canada and reduce the deficit?

Hey "your Lard & Waiver" the dolphins were a victim of mole activity where certain coaches had been paid to work the sh&$t out of key players to ensure Jacksonville a victory. I saw how confident the Jacksonville players were before the game even started. It was like they knew something that guaranteed them a victory over the dolphins even though the game had not been played. What they had learned from the mole on the dolphins coaching staff is that the team had been overworked and were completely wore out!!!!!!!

DASHI HURT UR FEELING THAT BAD LAST BLOG! Oscar.

Now No One Reads What I say. LMAO!!

What Part Of It's FUTILE TO INSULT Dashi! U don't Comprehend! Even Mando Had to Put up a New Post! After U Got Squashed Like That!

U can Discredit My Opinion All U Want!! Even Comparing Me And Odin As the Same!

BUT WE ALL KNOW U ARE DONE!! FINISHED!!

NOBODY BELIEVES U!!

Do the fans all dress up as orange seats or is the stadium empty on game days?

growing pains u'r axx.
it's the 12th game. anymo pix six ot batted bonehead paxxes = bust.

considering the wets have been blown out of the water at home consistently, most ppl that attend those debacles should be pissed, a piss poor effort from a piss poor team = fans that go nutz...

Miami simply doesn't bring that fire basically becuase they dont expect anything different every year which is why opponents can walk in and play on a Nuetral Field when facing the fins, the only true advantage for miami is HEAT!!!

That video is proceless

Priceless

The Heat is an advantage but it also keeps the fans away. Its brutally uncomfortable for 1:00 games.

if this team was 8-3 or 9-2, heat wouldnt stop ppl from showing up, the heat is not the brutal part of why ppl dont show up, this teams inability to produce results is the real uncomfortable reason why ppl dont waste their time....just sayin..

Wow! I actually feel sorry for the Jets. It takes a lot of balls to yell at a guy who is far your superior as an athlete, while knowing he could never touch you for your actions. The players don't deserve that. It says a lot about Jets fans though.

Jorge, have you seen the the wets play at home lately....im not saying that fan shouldnt have been smacked down for that but...tickets aint cheap in new york and that team doesnt even play hard or competetive most games anymore...and when you consistantly have to see another team in their own stadium be successful(GIANTS)its a joke...if the team doesnt care then why should the fans...just sayin!!!

superphin, agree the heat isnt the only reason people dont show up. The Ireland boycott and 4 consecutive losing seasons are reasons also. No chance at playoffs either. But anyone with skin cancer symptoms cannot go to these games no matter how the team is.
