Philbin playtime philosophy good but what about adapting?

A couple of weeks ago Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan, disgusted by the team's sixth loss of the season, mentioned that perhaps it was time to start playing younger players and think about who is going to be on the team in 2013.

A lot of coaches go that route once the losses mount and the current season seems little more than a formality for getting to next season.

Don't expect Joe Philbin to do that.

Even if the Dolphins lose on Sunday as the oddsmakers expect; indeed even with the Dolphins record falling back to 5-8, Philbin is apparently going to continue playing his veterans if he stays true to his philosophy.

“Really, play time’s based on players have to have earn play time and they earn it through what they do on the practice field<' Philbin said Thursday. "If players earn the opportunity to play, we’ll certainly play them whatever year they are, it doesn’t really matter to us what year they are.

"I’m a big believer… I think when you walk into the room with those guys, it’s not fair to play a guy, people have to earn their keep and I don’t care what year you’re in the league. Those guys that bust their tail every day, we’re not going to put somebody in the game that doesn’t deserve to be in the game or hasn’t earned an opportunity to be in the game."

I get it. This is a perfectly reasonable and fair approach.

Philbin wants tell his team that the only way to play is to practice well. He doesn't want to reward subpar practices. He wants to play guys that make him the most comfortable and the coaching staff gains that comfort level by watching what happens in practice.

It is a perfectly logical approach.

But ...

Football is a game of adaptation and not logic. The ball does not bounce logically. The best team does not always win. Good plans that logically should succeed often go awry. And the people that come out ahead are those that adapt quickest not those that offer the most logic.

Thus, the idea of sticking to the stated philosophy works when the season is salvagable and all things and the goal for the entire organization is winning in the present. But when winning in the present is no longer the most vital thing, when doing what is best for the future of the organization becomes more important, all that logic and unwavering philosophy about whomever practices best plays should be cast aside.

It is smart to adapt and consider that certain players who might not be the best in practice now might become your best performers in the future. The Dolphins obviously believe running back Lamar Miller is such a player.

He is a rookie. He has promise. But Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas are both practicing better and obviously playing more because coaches are more comfortable with them, because they get more chances in practices and because Miller needs to improve his pass protection.

“I think he’s going to be a good football player in this league," Philbin said. "He’s got good instincts as a runner. He’s got good balance. He can catch the football. I think he has a chance to be a very good pass protector eventually too. I really do. He’s got good feet. He can bend. I’m excited about him.”

“I think he’s going to be a good football player in this league. He’s got good instincts as a runner. He’s got good balance. He can catch the football. I think he has a chance to be a very good pass protector eventually too. I really do. He’s got good feet. He can bend. I’m excited about him.”

Well then, when the relevance of this season becomes what is going to happen next season, then the Dolphins coaches should consider putting those feet and all that bending ability to work. Like immediately.

Would that make Reggie Bush upset? Would it upset veterans?

Look, Bush was upset about sitting after that fumble against Tennessee, although he understands that's the business. He's not all that thrilled that the team has not had any contracts talks with his agent, although he understands that's the business.

He'd probably not be happy about giving up snaps to Miller, but he would understand that is the business.

Tight end Michael Egnew is in a similar situation as Miller. He's behind players that are better than he is today. Both Anthony Fasano and Charles Clay practice better than Egnew on most days -- be it in that they make fewer mistakes, or block better or make more catches.

But eventually the Dolphins need to know what they have in Egnew. They can't keep putting off the need to find a tight end to help rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill in the red zone and down the seam of the defense.

Maybe Egnew isn't that guy. Maybe he is that guy. The point is we might soon need to get about the business of finding out.

Would that upset Fasano or Clay, either of whom might get fewer snaps in games? Maybe. But it wouldn't be an issue if they were more productive. If they were the sure answers, the Dolphins wouldn't have drafted Egnew and no one would even mention him. So ... next!

Now, I am only a journalist. I suppose the Dolphins coaching staff could ignore these suggestions. They could scoff at the idea of someone who doesn't know football like they do suggesting they start looking ahead with players that ar younger and need experience.

But, I remind you, Mike Shanahan three weeks ago was preparing to do the very thing I'm suggesting. And he's won two Super Bowl trophies as a head coach. And that's more than any Dolphins coach can say.

Checkmate.

Does anyone remember reggie wayne(UM rules) begging to come here even without peyton this past offseason?
How'd that turn out Jeff(worst GM ever nominee)?

WHDPs,

It's also a defence that gave up 27 points to Sanchez and company at HOME.

Also, 27 pts to the Lions, 28 to the 'Skins, and 30 to the Packers.

If you are saying they have the POTENTIAL to be a good defence, I will agree with you on that point. They're young and they will get better.

ireland's acorns,

Wayne was begging to come here? He was? From everything I heard there was no doubt he was returning to Indy. If there was any mention of it at all, it was strictly to drive up the price for Indy. Wayne in Miami was never a serious consideration.

We have the worst starting QB in football. Thanks Irescum.

The Rams have a good defence?' Are you kidding me? Brady lit them up all day to the tune of something like 45-7. I'm sure there have been others, I just don't have them in front of me right now.

Craig,

Brady does that to a lot of teams. The Rams have a bunch of good, young players like Brockers, Quinn, & Jenkins on top of vets like Finnegan, Long, & Laurinitis. They'll be a top ten defense next year.

For me T'eo isnt just a great talent decision. What clenches it for me is the kid carries himself with dignity, respect, and you can see he's highly intelligent.

If this team likes guys that are smart, model citizens, and great football players like they say they do. If T'eo is available and they pass, then theyve revealed themselves as "total liars" to this fanbase.

T'eo is the very imbodiment of what this organization says its looking for.

YG,

We're not picking high enough so forget it. Not going to happen.

Craig, pay no attention to that guy. Pretty sure the troll found his way back.

Reggie Wayne wanted to return to Miami. Ross cheaped out on him as usual.

.. My biggest fear about the possibility of drafting out on Teo is that many of the teams that may be drafting ahead of us will evaluate Te'o as the best player available. This coming draft is not full of quarterbacks. Recent drafts we have seen teams reach for guys out of desperation. This years crop would certainly qualify as desperate. But look at the other positions..Not many guys that pop out as ELITE..not for the top 5..Te'o is the one guy that fits this bill. We may see him taken higher then a normal draft just because there aren't guys that seem like locks other then him. A lot of evaluation left. We will see. The ND Bama game may seal our fate if he has a huge game.

Yeah, look at that didn't even remember to change names.

Craig,

I've only seen three or four of their games. From what I've seen they're a pretty good defense & yes I believe they will be very good next year.

I don't know, Man, about Philbin, I mean. In practical terms,Intelligence, is not equal to, Smart. There are many types of Intelligences. We'll see.

With the lack of elite talent & no great QB prospects coming out this year I believe Te'o is a top five pick Translation--there's no way we're getting him.

Just depends which team shows up. The team that contained Brady, Beat Seatle, Played the Cards tough, two losses due missed FG. or the team that lost to the Bills and Titans. Along with all the players needed to make this team get to the next level is consistency in execution.

Guys!

IT DOESN'T MATTER IF IT'S VERNON DAVIS, FRED DAVIS, OR GRANDMA DAVIS!!

THIS WEEKEND DANSBY AND FRIEND!! WILL BE THE DAVIS'S FAMILY BOTTOM B I T C H!!!

P.S= MY MONEY IS ON GRANDMA DAVIS VS DANSBY 1 ON 1!!!

YG et all,

The one thing with hping we crap out is that if Tannehill stinks it out the rest of the year, he may never get back out of that funk. I want to see him improve NOW -a nd it would be well sacrificing a few drafts spots to do so. To get Te'o, we need to eb top 5 anyway and that's not happening. So since we didn't trade up for RG3, we certinly are not trading up for a linebacker.

WHDPs,

I believe they will be good also. They're not quite there yet. Maybe we're saying the same thing, just saying it differently.

I think it's scary how good the Rams might become. Two firsts in April and two the year after. Everyone is loving the RGIII trade for the 'Skins right now but I think the Rams will make out just fine with the players they'll draft.

If they can't even earn playing time then why keep them on the roster?

...My point about the Rams was that their secondary has played well against the Niners. In fact they have played pretty well all year. I think they are in the top 10 as far as pass defense. The game against the Lions Stafford threw for a ton of yards..He does every week, they never run. The rams had 3 ints in that game. When have we had 3 int's in a game. The games v the Skins and jets neither qb had over 200 yards passing...I'm sure turnovers in the opposing teams favor were the factors..not the secondary for the Rams.

Anyway..Going back to my point. The whole idea was that the Rams have executed well defensivley against San Fran. They managed to stop the run. Something we can do, and they were able to shut them down through the pass..Something I don't think we can do..That was it.

Craig,

Our defense is 20th in the NFL in yards allowed & 26th against the pass plus we don't force a lot of turnovers. Is that good???

Failbin is full of s$%t! Just like morono gave the job to suck boy henne without earning it, failbin did the same with suck boy jr. All training camp hennehill was the third best qb behind garrard and moore. Well bye bye garrard and all of a sudden hennehill all of a sudden out plays moore. He didn't deserve to be the starter. Because irescum totally bombed that #8 pick they had to start him.

WHDPs,

No our defence isn't good enough. No question. I'd probably rather have their defence than our because it's younger. I think ours is going to need a makeover in the next year or two and the team's going to have to figure out what to do with guys like Starks, Dansby, Misi, Clemmons and Smith.

I'm all for adding offence in the draft but the D needs work as well.

I'm all for giving Tannehill more weapons, no question. He needs them...BADLY. But I don't ever see him as a QB that will carry this team. So I think it's just as important that we have a strong defence to kepe the scores down. The blueprint is in Baltimore and with Joe Flacco. Good QB but he'll never carry a team. I believe that will be Tannehill too.

"I believe they will be good also. They're not quite there yet. Maybe we're saying the same thing, just saying it differently.

They're 12th in the NFL in yards allowed. Our run defense is better but overall I think I'd give them the edge. They definitely overpaid for Langford but I like their CB's & we need an ILB more like Laurinitis.

Craig, WHDPs,

There is no doubt that our offense needs a lot more work than our defense. Sure our defense isn't very good but a good offense is more important to success in the NFL. So it is more important to have a good offense than a good defense. Problem is, in the first round at least, most of the top prospects play defense unless you guys want to draft another O-Lineman or slightly reach on another QB. Receivers start coming into play around pick 15 - TEs, in the mid 20s, RBs, don't even start until round 2.

Craig,

Misi is not a FA. He's having his best year so where is he going????

CRaig,

Which Of The Plans Do U want Dashi To Explain To U?

Dashi Has The With Dansby Plan! And The Without Dansby Plan!

With Dansby!

U Draft Te'o! Make Misi A DE!! And Have Burnett And Dansby Play the OLB'S!

THE WITHOUT DANSBY PLAN! (Which Dashi Loves)

U GET RID OF DANSBY AND BURNETT!! SIGN A FA LB(U CAN SIGN A GUY FOR $5 MILLION A YEAR THAT SHOULD PRODUCE BETTER THAN DANSBY OR BURNETT)!! DRAFT TE'O! And Another Mid Round Pick DE! Rookie! In The 3rd! Make The Rookie Compete With OV!!

Philbin Has STATED UR POINT RECENTLY!! SO KUDOS TO U CRAIG!!

HE DIDN'T PUBLICALLY SAY THE FINS NEED ANOTHER DE!! BUT WHAT HE DID SAY!! WHEN THEY ASKED HIM ABOUT 49ers!! IS THAT IF U WANT TO BE A GOOD TEAM IN THE NFL!! U NEED MORE THAN 1 GUY THAT CAN RUSH THE PASSER!! U NEED 2 DE'S!!!

So U Can Expect That IS A POINT OF EMPHASIS FOR PHILBIN!!

..Alright fellas..Have a good one. I have to get ready to do a "tailgate party" for some customers tonight. My worst nightmere has come true and the rival junior varsity team from Bozeman is playing in the FCS querterfinals this evening. One guy worth checking out is Sam Houston running back Richard Sincerre. Maybe the fastest player in any division of college football.

The name of the game is winning. We aren't 2-10 we are 5-7. Meaning there is a slim chance of making the playoffs. You play the best player on every play, day in and day out. If Reggie Bush drops the ball and gives away points, he sits.
If you don't, Fa's don't come here. You never give up. Don't Suck for Luck. Ever. Because that attitude will come back and bite you in the butt in the next season.

WHDPs,

I didn't say he was a FA. I simply said 'our defence will need a makeover in the next year or two'. Just because a guy isn't a FA doesn't mean he's guaranteed a job. I don't think he's going anywhere RIGHT NOW either but they need to figure out at some point if he's the guy. I think we'll see a decision on that in the next year or two.

Ha ha stupid Dolphins fans.
Dolphin fans so stupid.
Dolphins fans pretend top FAs will come here.
Top FAs no come here for last 5 years.
Only acorns come here.
This big acorn festival.
Acorn belong on end of wang not in starting lineup.
Stupid.

Mark,

Again I think we could get into an argument about what's more important in the NFL, offence or defence. I still think at the end of the day you still need to be able to stop somebody. That's why the Saints don't win more often. Great offence, high-scoring and all but it's not enough. 'Skins, same thing. RGIII and all...INCREDIBLE! I still think if you're going to be a championship team you have to be able to play defence too.

An argument for another day maybe. I just don't see us EVER being a high-scoring, top 5 offence, with Tannehill at QB. I don't see it. Hope he proves me wrong.

"There is no doubt that our offense needs a lot more work than our defense. Sure our defense isn't very good but a good offense is more important to success in the NFL. Mark,

Agreed. Who is really worthy of being a top ten pick @ WR??? Maybe we do go defense for a CB or pass rusher or ILB. Could even trade down & take a WR or either the TE from Stanford or Notre Dame.

It's very good that we have two 2nd round picks this year b/c we have a lot of needs. Wish we had another 1st like the Rams.

All you Te'O lovers, check out Alec Ogletree of UGA. This guy impressed me last week against Bama. Very impressive athletically and he is physical. He had one goaline hit on Lacy that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Also scored on a block punt for a TD. ESPN has the kid rated 18th overall right now. Could end up like Sean Weatherspoon a few years back and make his way up with a good senior bowl or slide to the 2nd. If that's the case, he shouldn't be ignored there.

Truly, we would like a less infantile Blog here. I mean, we like children and all, but I feel We need a higher level of communication here.

Craig,

Other than Jones there's not a player on defense that has improved more this season than Misi. Both players are not going anywhere.

WHDP,
Again and again you talk about the upcoming draft as if we will have the same freedom to choose as other teams will and this is just not true.

The NFL requires us to have 53 players on the roster.
20 of our current players are leaving in FA and have to be replaced.

They will either be replaced with draft picks or acorns.

That being said we need help at every position except QB so whoever is best available should be drafted and when the picks are gone we'll switch to acorns.

Business as usual.

WHDPs,

We'll see. Not convinced. Not saying I'm not a fan but he's certainly not irreplaceable.

The Colts can keep Reggie Wayne. He would be an expensive stopgap, not a solution. Reliable? Yes. Upgrade? Yes. On the downswing? YES! We need a good young WR..

Craig, the Saints are an extreme example, they are bad defensivelya s they are good offensively. I mean, they set new heights for stink on defense. I think a 20th ranked defense is good enough to win if you have a good offense.

Look at NE - 26th defense
Atlanta 18th defense
Giants 22nd defense
Green Bay 15th defense
Baltimore 25th defense

I also look at the winning percentage of the top 10 units in certain offensive and defensive categories in order to have this opinion

Top 10 Offenses .633 win %
Top 10 defenses .588 win %

Top 10 passing Offenses .608 win%
Top 10 passing defense .496 win %

And of those top 10 offenses, only two are in the top 10 in defense - Houston and Denver. The rest are an either/or scenario.

"An argument for another day maybe. I just don't see us EVER being a high-scoring, top 5 offence, with Tannehill at QB. I don't see it. Hope he proves me wrong."

Craig,

We have no idea. I doubt many people thought ever thought Matt Schaub would run a top five offense.

Again and again you talk about the upcoming draft as if we will have the same freedom to choose as other teams will and this is just not true.

DeVille,

You conveniently left out that we're also going to have about $45 Million in cap space. If you know anything about the latest CBA ALL teams are going to be required to spend AT LEAST 90% of the cap on player salaries. $45 Million can buy more than a couple of acorns...

A guiy who doesn't get much love from other than Craig is Andy Dalton. he went from being a game manager last year to the leader of that offense and they are now dynamic thanks to him. If we could get a similar progression here ...

Mark,

Dalton is a good one. I liked him a lot last year. While the fans & media are drooling all over Cam Newton, all Dalton does is win games & make the playoffs.

Mark @ 3:46pm,

Excellent point. Yeah Tannehill having an AJ Green to throw to in his offence would make all the difference in the world. I also like their TE Greisham. Playmakers.....all over the place.

Mark,

Ogletree Is My Second Favorite LB!! Coming Out This Draft!!

I Posted During That Bama Game!! OgleTree Played Better Than J.Jones!!

And That I WOuld Draft Te'o With The #5 Pick! And With The #37 Pick! Dashi Will Take OgleTree!! And The Safety Elam From UF With the Other #2 We Have!!

We Should Be Able To Sign FA's At WR & CB!! Because Those 2 Positions!! Aren't That Good In This Draft!!

Dashi Has Said All ALONG!! THE 2013 Draft Is Loaded With Defensive Players!! Not A Lot Of Offensive Talent!! Only At The TE Spot!

I Don't See 1 QB Taken In The Top 10!! EVEN IF TEAMS NEED THEM(Not Enough Talent)!! AND WE ALL KNOW DASHI SAYS BARKLEY WILL BE A 6TH ROUND PICK(Before The Season)!! AND BARKLEY HASN'T PROVEN ME WRONG ALL YEAR(S.Morris From The U Is Better)!!

USC has Some Good WR's! But I Don't See Them Coming Out! And Sammy Watkins Either!!

I said earlier Cincy was one of two teams to add three pro bowlers in the top 2 rounds of the draft in the last 5 years.

Consider this, in a 2 year span, they added Gresham, Green, and Dalton. Pro Bowlers all. BAM!

And That Little WR the Bengals Have!

WHDP,
$45mil/20 players = $2.25/player

Dashi, still think Geno Smith is going #1 to KC. They will do what we did last year because you can't go into another season with matt cassell. JUST CAN'T. Maybe they get Vick or Rivers for a year or two but the dropoff after Geno is HUUUUUGE

That's $2.25mil/player

I say keep drafting a QB in the first round until one pops..then trade the others for picks....Tennehill may be a diamond in the rough..But guys like Luck and RG3 already have the "right stuff"..and BTW - I hate the colts for tanking their season to get Luck..It will eventually come out they did..but just years from now....

JOe, are you Matt Millen?

To his credit though, he eventually did draft Calvin Johnson so it's hard to refute the plan ...

Mark,

Not arguing with your point but you can only do what Cinci did if you've got most of the rest of your team in order. Both their lines are pretty good, thus allowing them to draft playmakers and Pro Bowlers. I just see no point in grabbing playmakere if your QB's never going to have time to throw. Depending on what we do with Long, I think we're at the point where we can and MUST add Pro Bowlers.

Gotta take off fellas....enjoy your night!

No sense in getting a WR until we get a good QB. It would be a repeat of the Henne - Marshall infighting.

WHDP,
Regarding the Matt Schaub comment:

Imagine how different the league would be if Atl had not traded Schaub the season before Vick went to prison.

Joe, I agree keep drafting a QB until we hit on one. There really is no other sensible choice.

49ers 31
Fins 10
DC Dolfan: 0 rose petals or grapes

I like this kid from W Virgina, Geno Smith i think?

It's time Joe's fired.
