Answers on Reggie Bush and Jake Long questions

The question of whether the Dolphins want to re-sign Reggie Bush after this season is no longer a question. I have learned the answer and wrote in my column for Monday's Miami Herald the Dolphins would like their leading rusher of the last two seasons to re-sign after this season is over.

Bush is scheduled to be a free agent after this season.

One caveat on that desire to keep Bush in Miami and it's an important one: The Dolphins have a price tag they are willing to pay for Bush. And if the Dolphins can get Bush for that price, then they'll be thrilled to have him.

If, however, Bush wants to break the bank and go to the highest bidder, the Dolphins will be equally happy to turn their lead running back duties to someone else. Who?

Well, again, I was told Sunday evening general manager Jeff Ireland is eager and excited about the possibility of Lamar Miller becoming a more vital part of the offense in 2013.

(Sorry, Daniel Thomas).

There's more.

What will the Dolphins do with long-time left tackle Jake Long after this season?

That's covered in the column as well. It is very telling that the Dolphins believe Jonathan Martin's first few days as an NFL left tackle were significantly better than his first few days as an NFL right tackle.

The team thought Martin to be an F-rated right tackle when he first showed up to training camp. He obviously got better from there and earned the starting job at the position. But when Long went down with a torn triceps injury and Martin was thrust into the starting job on the left side, the Dolphins actually thought Martin immediately performed like a C-plus left tackle.

And he's gotten better from there.

So what are the odds of Miami re-signing Long, who is a free agent after this season? Well, the Dolphins aren't against the notion if Long is going to sign a bargain contract. But the club recognizes someone without a viable answer at LT will be willing to pay Long probably more than the Dolphins are willing to pay.

So Long has one foot out the door.

The column also describes Ireland's plan for this offseason. It's all about adding playmakers. By the way, the best playmaker on defense Sunday was safety Reshad Jones. He recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass.

Jones is signed through next year so he's not going anywhere.

But he tells me that his agent Joel Segal and the team have talked about a contract extension and he hopes to get one done this offseason. "That's what I'd like to see," Jones said. "But I'm just playing and letting my agent and the team take care of the rest."

Foist!

El Primero.

5 Picks in the first three rounds..
Chances that Ireland picks at least 1 starter?
Look at his past two drafts.

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE SICK AND TIRED OF THE LOSING! HELP MAKE THE CHANGE!

Didnt ya just know Ireland would pick the wrong QB?

Only thing we lack at rb is a tackle breaking rb. Doesnt seem Thomas is it. We still need to add that dimension via cheap vet fa or late in the draft.

I would actually like to see Long take a pay cut to move to RT, over walking.

Still, what Ireland wants to add seems quite in line with team needs. Plenty of offense and possible pass rush help or depth.

Bush is all but gone unless he takes a hometown discount. as far as long goes, his injuries have done him in for too many games and is practically out the door after this year as well..

The big decision will be in starks and hartline....starks, I can see being re-signed..Hartline, not so much a priority in my opinion...

I hope Bush, who has already made a ton of money, decides he can play for a good salary but not break the bank in Miami.

Good information, Armando.

Merry Christmas!

superPHIN,

Read between the lines. Armando reports Jeff Ireland say he's looking to "ADD POINTS". Hartline has 1 td in 15 gams and 6 for his 4yr career.

IMO, if Hartrline's unwilling to stay at bargain basement price, he'll be asked to kindly take a hike too.

Really superphin? What makes you say that? Bush is the entire offense.

Thanks for confirming what my eyes have been telling me for a couple of years now, Mando.

Jake Long is overpaid and really doesn't move the metere in getting the team closer to the playoffs. Players like that are complementary guys, not the guys you pay a lot of money to.

You put your money where your points are scored IMO.

I actually like Bush's chances to remain a dolphin. Im thinking D Thomas will be cut before the end of 2013 camp. Especially if he sustains any sort of injury forcing him to miss time.

If bush thinks he's braking the bank anywhere given his off and on production this year...he's in for one bad shot to his bankroll...Some team may offer him more but not as their starting rb and not for big dollars!!

YG4E, Thomas is injury prone IMHO, Though Id love the fins to sign Reggie they need a feature(A Bruising 4 yard guy) and keep Reggie as a option to open up the Offense, Those that sa Bess And Hartline arent 1st team players are just clueless IMHO, They stack the line knowing Reggie is a east to west runner not a nort to south runner, I hink Miami needs that Bruiser type runner that will constanly get those 4 or5 td runs. Regge is not that guy., Who do you see coming out of collage or Free agency that will fil that spot?

Please tell us that Ross will wise up and get rid of that idiot jeff ireland!! he is the worst GM in the nfl and to keep him is a huge mistake!! if Ross wants to win, he has to see that there are better people more qualified that ire-scum that can take this team to the next level and without making us look stupid in the process!! this is all we Dolfans want for Xmas!!

I say pay Bush whatever he wants.

If you guys would do as Armando asks and read his column you'd know Ireland believe Lamar Miller is his man at RB next year.

The guy is 218 pounds. That's bruising enough for anybody.

Fin77

How much would you actually pay bush to stay given lamar millers emergence recently??, im not sure miami isnt thinking the same there in terms of taking bush back only at a discount price...
I would like to see him stay personally but i dont see him simply wanting to stay if another team offers him more incentive($$$) and I wouldnt blame him....

Bush deserves to stay in Miami..

Guy Looks 185 LBS Soaking wet, Thats got to be his weight in full uniform.

Looks like where in right direction

Fin77
Thats a mistake in judgment right there...you absolutely do not pay reggie bush anything he wants..how many games has he sat on the sideline and watched guys like thomas and miller taking the carries..

And im still not convinced bush is a consistant 20-25 carry a game back and indeed healthy enough to stay on the field for the duration of a season..sorry but i totally couldnt disagree more with you there!!!

Magee,

Marcus Latimore is now rated a undrafted fa by Walter Camp. He's torn an acl in both knees in successive seasons. Both seasons he was one of the best rb in the nation before those injuries.

So, if he's still around during our 7th rd pick, I would take him in a heartbeat. He shoul be fully recovered by the time camp rolls around.

Adrian Peterson has shown that acl injuries are no longer the devastating career ending injuries they used to be. If Marcus Lattimore is still sitting there with our 7th rd pick. Its a no brainer to take him.

Superfin Now your talking,They need "A BRUISER", The guy tat will take the ball 4,5,6 yards each ply.Who's out there in collage that the fins can draft?

but why should we keep thomas as a back when he's not on the field very often and isn't that great of a power runner! we traded up to get him and look where it leaves us? miller looks good but if Regis Philbil & Peabody Sherman can't get Reggie in space what makes you think they will do that with Miller?? stupid is as stupid does!!

YG4E, Frank Gore, Another guy that's had those type of injurys and look at what he's done.
Intiguing..

In one game Reggie Bush eqauled Hartline/Bess entire season td reception production in one game. Bush had 2 tds recieving today. Hartline/Bush combined have 2 tds recieving for the year.

Magee...

Keep an eye on joseph randle out of Oklahoma state, kid has the size and physical tools of a big type of bruiser back...and could be had in the third round..

Last season, Randle recorded at least 100 yards rushing in eight of his 12 games and already has an NFL-type body that will only improve.....

dashi,

I see the great dashi knows very well of Marcus Lattimore. I didnt think many here would have a clue of who he is. He can come very cheap too. LOL...

Duke Johnson, Look For ESPN to start fothing at the mouth about Duke, I can see it now lee Corso and the other idiots saying " THE DUKE OF MIAMI", We already know and have seen it from this freshmen, hopefully he stays injury free and out of trouble, Steven Morris is another "BALLER"
The Canes future looks good.

SuperPHIN,

I would be looking to draft a rb that high(3rd rd). We would be better served with adding a wr or semi quality DT/DE(like Will Sutton of AZ St.)

Even getting a rb like Marcus Lattimore 4th/5th rd could turn into a steal if he remains healthy. The guy has power and still had 4.4 speed even after coming back from the 1st acl injury.

YG, I'll check him out on U-Tube, Only heard a little bit about the guy.

dashi,

Ball could go up o 2nd rd. Our rb situation isnt that grave to go 2nd rd for a rb. That's why I think Marcus Lattimore is the guy. With his skillset I would risk bust.

Walter Camp actually has Lattimore rated an undrafted rookie fa.

I Got to quite Watching only the ACC.

CraigM may like this one. If we take a defensive player 1st rd. I would like it to be OLB Anthony Barr, UCLA. He plays the run well and has 13.5 sacks this season.

YG,Even if he's a bust You gotta expect a 75% bust from Ireland.LOL

Dashi, TESTIFY.......

Merry Christmas Armando! Thanks for bringing us the best news and perspective of the Miami Dolphins!

Fire Ireland now, or there's no way out.

The biggest move this team can make lies in Ross' hand: Firing Jeff Ireland. This piece says as much as we need to know about his mismanagement of this team:

1. Not trading Long on time, so we'd potentially let him walk and get...NOTHING!!! Great ROI on a 1st overall pick who BTW got grossly overpaid. Could have traded him easily for picks to get a stud LT from TA&M for a fraction of the cost.

2. Not resigning Bush prior to the season's end. If you watch enough football you had to know Reggie would be a great pick for this WCO. Now we will have to overpay, no wonder our payroll is worse than...New England's!!!! Sickening!

3. Excited about L. Miller? Why? BTW that means that trade-up he did for D. Thomas was yet another dumb move.

Don't need to beat a dead horse, all of you true fans do know the list is long. Unfortunately I seriously doubt Ross will pull the trigger. We are yet again at the familiar 8-8 that is soooooo Irelandish. Get used to it, but mark my words, this team is going nowhere until he goes. Pathetic.

The Dolphins don't need a running back they need to game breaking wide receivers. Justin Hunter from Tennessee 6'4 version of Percy Harvin that runs great routes. Then you have in Kennan Allen from Cal a 6'3 wideout with game breaking speed and the ability to go over and make the hard catch. Then Cordarrelle Patterson has very good hands, is a big target like Terrell Owens. Get 2 of those 3 and that stretches the field and gets 8 out of the box opens up more running lanes for Reggie Bush and stops the db's from pressing. This makes

Thee is enough on this team to feel optimistic for the future, and with even a decent draft we will be better. The coaches have done a good job with a Very young team. To install their system along with a rookie QB learning the NFL and his position i believe the team is heading in the right direction in a healthy and positive way. I also would not have expected the coaches to have resigned any of our impending FA's untill the season ended, as we simply didn't need to,plus its how most teams do business anyway. The players will already be aware who is wanted back for next season anyway

Merry Christmas to all!!!!

I love what Jeff Ireland is doing coming from a 40 year Die Hard Fan! Merry Christmas to all

Ireland has earned another year so get over it. It would be crazy stupid to get rid of Ireland. The team is finally making significant progress after the Sparano debacle brought to us by Parcells. I can't wait to see Tannehill in 2013 with some more weapons, a year of experience and another draft like the class of 2012. The future looks great.

I don't understand the hype over Keenan Allen. He is the most overrated wide receiver in the draft. The best receiver coming out this year is Da'Rick Rogers. If he keeps himself on the straight and narrow he's got what it takes to be a game changer. Terrance Williams is next and then Tavon Austin. Hunter is big and has speed but Rogers is what made Tennesse when he was there. Hunter played second fiddle.
As far as Allen is concerned, he's a possession receiver but doesn't have the ability to break a big one or be the guy this team needs to take the top off the defense. Rogers, Williams and Austin can do that. However, the sleeper is Markus Wheaton from Oregon State. Keep an eye out for this guy.
At CB, look for Leon McFadden and Melvin White. McFadden is great in man to man and zone, great instincts, quick and fast, great hands and a hard hitter. White is a big corner who can jar the ball loose and is aggressive in coverage and run support. Both are huge sleepers at the corner position and hopefully one finds a home on the team.
Like the prospect of Montee Ball but alos like Le'Veon Bell as well. Even if Bush resigns the problem remains that he's getting older and the team needs to keep that in mind. They also can't rely on Gray getting back from his injury and Thomas needs to go find another place to sit on the bench and not waste a roster spot on this team.

Ryan Tannehill make stupid mistakes that are not worthy of rookie status.

Keenan Allen is a perfect fit in Joe Philibin's west coast offence.I would be shocked if we don't draft him

Too early, but it seems like Manti T'eo will go to Cle at #8.

We love Jeff Ireland too. Give him a raise and an extension! haha

WTH did the JETS rule the cellar? That team is a disgrace and laughingstock of the league. The front office, coaching staff and players should all be given their immediate release. haha

I like Damontre Moore as a pass rusher.

Reggie is the face of the franchise and the only playmaker on the team. Ross would have to be a really cheap SOB to let him walk.

Can anyone remember the last time the Dullfins won a playoff game? Me neither.

Long is not worth the money. Unless he's willing to work on the cheap then the Dolphin's money would be better served landing a FA at TE, Corner, or WR.

I do not make up stories. Should have said, .....in a Game leading to the AFC Champiomship, Unitas dinked and donked Us to death(not televised, I saw it on closed circuit). Look it up. You People should be more objective, too obsessive, too obsessive.

Allen has no touchdown production. 6 td's in 2011 and 2012 isn't good enough to be rated a first round receiver prospect.
Williams has plenty of production at Baylor, with and without RGIII.
Rogers is the real deal and he and Williams are a perfect fit for the WCO as well as Austin.
As far as Lattimore is concerned, the only way they should look at this guy is LATE. Enough is enough with bringing in guys who are injured to rehab in Miami. This is not a nursing home.

Reggie is a good playmaker, elite, no so you dont break the bank paying him. The Fins players already get a discount by playing in Florida by no income tax. Lamar averaged over 7 yards a carry yesterday. He is Reggie but quicker. I hope Reggie comes back but at the right price, as he is a good player and a good locker room presence from what Ive read. His work ethic is beyond belief.
Bringing back Long seems the least likely of these two as some team out there is going to over pay for him bc they need a LT. Martin has held his own after being thrown back to his natural position.
Hartline is interesting to me because he has had a career year but only has 1 TD and constantly falls down to catch balls. He is a solid #2 that I think we would need to keep. Matthews and this Binns kid seem to be good. Moore proved he will be gone next year as his experiment seems to be long over due.
For those of you bashing Ireland, do your homework on other GM's and compare before you call for his head. Paired with Philbin it seems the personel decisions are getting better. It takes more than one year to get all of Philbins type guys in.
Tannehill had a decent day yesterday again not turning the ball over. He is finally showing his athleticism and the D's will have to account for what he can do with his legs which will create more mid to down field throws. Hes a rookie that had minimal experience coming out of college. Its not his fault Moore couldnt hold onto his job putting him in the starting role which the majority wanted him to sit a year. This years rookie class has been ridiculously talented and is doing things and breaking records. He seems to need a "rookie" year by pass. If he is like this next year then thats telling.

You see, Armando, if you hope I will be passive here with all these attacks and even insults to my Person, you have 2 new things coming.

Those of you, such as Harmel, that think Ross is too cheap.. realize the GM makes the offers. Ross wants to win, winning fattens his pockets, pays off his 1 billion dollar investment. He is nothing like the owner in Jacksonville..

Based on Mando's article this is what Ireland may do.....

Resign- Smith, Hartline, Bush, Fasano, Garner

Let walk- Long, Starks, etc.

FA- Sign GB WR Greg Jennings, and other BPA

Trade- Devon Bess and 7th round pick to NE for 2nd rd pick

Draft we should be drafting in the late teens based on schedule

1st- WR Cal Keenan Allen
2nd- Stan TE Zach Ertz
2nd- Texas DE Alex Okafor
2nd- LSU S Eric Reid
3rd- Kent OG Larry Warford
3rd- Texas WR Ryan Swope (Bess's replacement and Ryan's fav reciever from college)
4th- Illinois CB Terry Hawthorne
Rest BPA

I would Move Jerry to RT, kick Odrick to the inside, and I think Vernon is gonna be a killer OLB maybe Burnett's eventual replacement which is why we need DL pass rushers to compliment him
