Answers on Reggie Bush and Jake Long questions

The question of whether the Dolphins want to re-sign Reggie Bush after this season is no longer a question. I have learned the answer and wrote in my column for Monday's Miami Herald the Dolphins would like their leading rusher of the last two seasons to re-sign after this season is over.

Bush is scheduled to be a free agent after this season.

One caveat on that desire to keep Bush in Miami and it's an important one: The Dolphins have a price tag they are willing to pay for Bush. And if the Dolphins can get Bush for that price, then they'll be thrilled to have him.

If, however, Bush wants to break the bank and go to the highest bidder, the Dolphins will be equally happy to turn their lead running back duties to someone else. Who?

Well, again, I was told Sunday evening general manager Jeff Ireland is eager and excited about the possibility of Lamar Miller becoming a more vital part of the offense in 2013.

(Sorry, Daniel Thomas).

There's more.

What will the Dolphins do with long-time left tackle Jake Long after this season?

That's covered in the column as well. It is very telling that the Dolphins believe Jonathan Martin's first few days as an NFL left tackle were significantly better than his first few days as an NFL right tackle.

The team thought Martin to be an F-rated right tackle when he first showed up to training camp. He obviously got better from there and earned the starting job at the position. But when Long went down with a torn triceps injury and Martin was thrust into the starting job on the left side, the Dolphins actually thought Martin immediately performed like a C-plus left tackle.

And he's gotten better from there.

So what are the odds of Miami re-signing Long, who is a free agent after this season? Well, the Dolphins aren't against the notion if Long is going to sign a bargain contract. But the club recognizes someone without a viable answer at LT will be willing to pay Long probably more than the Dolphins are willing to pay.

So Long has one foot out the door.

The column also describes Ireland's plan for this offseason. It's all about adding playmakers. By the way, the best playmaker on defense Sunday was safety Reshad Jones. He recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass.

Jones is signed through next year so he's not going anywhere.

But he tells me that his agent Joel Segal and the team have talked about a contract extension and he hopes to get one done this offseason. "That's what I'd like to see," Jones said. "But I'm just playing and letting my agent and the team take care of the rest."

Look it this one. He says Lamar is quicker than Bush! Blind Fan, like most in this Blog.(tooyoung, tooyoung, Oscar.)

Oscar, it seems as though youre talking about my post, since you like to correct grammatical errors, please reread your post. "Look it this one" Yes Miller is younger and quicker. Ive watched both live, can you say that? Saying im blind because my opinion is different than yours and youre wanting to cry to Armando about people attacking you. awwwwww

Look it this other one. Vernon will replace Burnett who is the LB that covers the TEs and calls the front 7 alignment. I tell ya, most People do not express their own opinions but that of others, the Media.

jets rule,
with the massive amount you will be paying out next season due to your GM's decision making, I am ecstatic that you want us to give ireland an extension!!!!!!!!!!!
If you continue to look out for our team instead of your own that will do for me!!!!!

I didnt claim they were far apart but Miller hits the hole harder and shoots through it quicker than Bush.

BK i read your post as you said "maybe Burnetts eventual replacement" , which some other posters have an issue doing. Yes players dont last forever so having a player to possibly take ones place isnt as crazy as some or one person seems to think it is.
If people would actually fully read someones post it would probably lead to less attacks. Ive been guilty of it in the past.

How old are you, matty? Bush is a scatback, like C J Spiller is with terrific quickness and consequently x moves. Lamar seems like a one cut RB. Please learn more Football before addressing the Blog. You are confusing many People here.

Fire Ireland is a dead horse! And all the morons sitting atop it beating away are not going to get it to move. That dead horse is starting to stink more and more though, so bury it in the back of your mind and let the rest of us get some air.

Vernon is 265 lbs, a hybrid DE/LB and not ideal to cover TEs and besides, being from Miami' s black Ghetto, probably as dumb as a rock.

Ross always picks the cheap players. Part of the reason the team stinks.

Think, think!

oscar, matty is out of touch out of towner = CLUELESS

Some Irescum loving Jests fans have infiltrated our blog this morning.

Oscar, im 30 soon to be 31, and played football in college. I know football, as I have been taught by current NFL coaches. Rather than trying to discount my knowledge based on my age try doing it with facts. If you think age dictates your football knowledge I guess the coach in Oakland doesnt know as much as you do neither. You should take your smugness and apply it to learning how to address people in a polite manner since you want to complain to Armando about people attacking you. Sometimes attacks on ones person is brought on by their own demeanor.

matty = young and dumb

WOW! lots of excitement this AM. It's good to see. Then again, winning fixes everything.

Good article, Armando. And good news for Dolphin fans. Keeping Jake Long at any price would have ruined next year's cap possibilities. Hopefully Jake goes along with a deal much more realistic and beneficial for the team. He will make the team stronger if he stays.

Glad to see that Reggie won't be ignored, but chased neither. I hope that Reggie also goes along with a deal that's beneficial for the team.

Both of these players have good value for the Dolphins but their worth is diminished because of rookies. J. Martin will most likely not surrender the LT spot to Jake next year. And...

Lamar Miller sure is beginning to look like the real deal. His 10 carries yesterday for 73 yards @ 7.3 yards-a-pop through the same holes that Reggie was was only squeaking out 65 yards on 19 carries for 3.4 yards per try, lends a lot of weight to the argument to let Reggie walk.

I'm sure that Reggie understands that it might be a bigger, stronger Lamar that is the feature back next year, also, even if Reggie returns. Miller sure looked exciting accelerating through what looked like only small slits a few times yesterday.

Lots of things for Dolphin fans to be excited about this AM.

matty...

OSCAR IS FAMOUS TO SHOW IGNORANCE ONCE AWHILE ......HE CLAMIS KNOWLEDGE WHILEE INSULTING OTHERS ...........

FORGIVE HIM....

CLAIMS

And then Oscar reverts to racism... attacking Vernons intellect based on the fact he is black and grew up in a predominately black ghetto. This shouldnt surprise as he is known to attack Cubans as well, even once asking me if I were Cuban because of how I had typed something once and not rereading it to make sure it was grammatically correct

MATTY,

OSCAR WORKED AS A NURSE FOR LONG TIME.

FORGIVE HIM..

The Draft season is "ON"

Regardless I wish everyone out there a Merry Christmas, a happy and safe holiday.

Matty, no smugness at all, but I do believe that, regarding strategy, I know more than some NFL Coaches. Did you see Chan Gailey running the ball towards the end of the 3rd Qt yesterday being down 24-3? And that's a certified NFL Football Coach? Dummer than Vontae Davis.IMHO

VONTAE DAVIS IS IN THE PLAYOFFS with the (( colts )).........................

DOLPHINS IN THE CELLAR ........

I agree that they needed to start passing but I think that Gailey was trying to stick to his game plan which was working. Not changing ones style or plan gets you left behind which is why Gailey will be one at the end of the season or if not the reason Ralphs team will be in the bottom of the AFCE again next year.

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE SICK AND TIRED OF THE LOSING! HELP MAKE THE CHANGE!

Nahh, matty, I attack their lack of Education and not their intellect. 2 diferent things, you know?

Aloco,
He has been hurt most of the year and is ranked in the cellar of CB's. Yes the team he is on might be in the playoffs but Vonte did not contribute to that lol. We got good value for a player not performing.

Vontae Davis = another Irescum bust

No! No! We have to do everything we can do to keep Chan Gailey in his place.

matty, I thought Tannehill had a good game yesterday, too. Not great, mind you, but he is taking care of the football and consequently, the offense.

I think he has good maturity for a 1st year guy. I think you see this in the decisions he makes. He throws the ball away when he can't make a play; doesn't take a lot of sacks; avoids the last ditch effort to throw into double coverage, etc.

His dink and dunk might not be what people want to see but it is the basis for WCO. Many disliked Pennington for his dink and dunk, too, but he made the team what it was. Unlike Pennington, though, Tannehill can make all the throws and offers more potential.

Once the Dolphins find/develop some weapons in the receiver area, I think he will jump out of his game manager shell and supply the fireworks. I am a Matt Moore fan but its beginning to look like it was a good decision to stay with Tannehill this year.

I wouldn't mind having Lamar as the feautured back if he develops more and then using Reggie in spots. However, Bush is not going to like that situation,. Maybe best, sign Bush as the premier back for 2 years. Then, we'll see.

We need playmakers, specially WRs.

oscar... IF YOU R A NURSE ,HOW CAN YOU JUDGE A GROUP OK PEOPLE'S EDUCATION ?

MATTY,,,,,

COLTS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS .........

Actually, running in obvious passing situations is advantageous & often times results in big running lanes. Catches the D off guard with the wrong personel on the field.

Oscar, do the blog a favor & just stfu! You're as dumb as they come. You think age makes you smarter?

It doesn't. It makes you a grumpy, senile old man who has forgotten more than he remembers.

Armando.....

Good article.....good read.....

Vontae Davis
Brandon Marshall
Mike Nolan

All in the playoffs after leaving this garbage franchise lol

oscar, I think Reggie is more of a team player than a "me" guy and consequently will stay with Miami IF he doesn't have to take an embarrassing offer. A longer deal with more incentive money than guaranteed money would allow him to play out his time in Miami with a seemingly big contract. I think he knows that at some point -maybe even next year -he will have to take his old role, like he had in NO, and play second fiddle to a feature back.

At least that's my take on it. I know he likes Miami, both the city and the team. If the team looks good for next year, he could also be looking at local and national commercial endorsements. That may appeal to him.

Age does not make you smarter, that's inborn. It makes you wiser. Besides my Profession where I dissect Minds.

That's a consideration, billcale.

Ross will cheap out on Reggie Bush. Watch.

GREAT game yesterday. It's far more than I expected out of the team this year than them being alive in Week 16. Take all the injuries to an already talent-depleted team, and we could have folded like a cheap lawnchair. But we didn't, and that speaks to the pride of the players and Coaches. If we can beat the Pats next week, it might be BETTER than being in the Playoffs. 8-8 for a 1st year HC/QB with little talent and 3 years prior being sub .500. That's a great start in my book.

As far as the re-signing, I'd FAR rather see Bush re-signed than Long. Frankly, now I'm thinking a Long re-signing will diminish the team (especially Martin). The kid obviously is a natural left not right tackle. And to have him play out of position another year might spoil him. Plus, in Philbin's system, I'm not sure Long's the better player. I'd rather keep the money and let him walk.

Ireland's saying all the right things, but the proof will be in the pudding. He's had chances to grab playmakers before, and let way too many slip while taking role players instead. Hopefully this year will be different, and we don't just get good talent, but the RIGHT talent this team needs to take the next step.

Harmel, I agree with Ireland's position on Bush. Just like Long, he's NOT worth breaking the bank for. He's good, but not Adrian Peterson good. Not Arian Foster good. And with a younger version of him (who's probably a better runner if not all-around player) Ireland has the upper-hand. Look at ALL the good teams, and you'll see them not over-paying for talent. That's how they continue to build their teams. The bad teams overpay, and usually lose before a game is ever played.

Ireland should be in the "dock" in The Hague, being tried for Crimes Against Humanity.

Among the days' first exhibits for the prosecution: dvds of T.Y. Hilton, Alfred Morris & Jimmie Graham.

Why you masochists tolerate him is one of life's sad mysteries.

Pats have TWO players they are not willing to let go, Tom Brady and Vince Wilfork (the centerpieces of their offense and defense). Everyone else is expendable. And they're not doing so bad.

KRIS/DC

HAPPY CHRISTMAS ......

THE PATS THAT IS .............

WHEN YOU USE THESE WORDS (( NOT SO BAD )) IT DESCRIBES SOME ONE ON THE EDGE OF THE CELLAR ,NOT the AFC CHAMPS FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS AND STILL RUNNING ..........

Start with your own, knuckleduster.

OSCAR IS VERY GOOD AT LIFTING QUOTES FROM OTHER SOURCES AND PRESENT THEM AS HIS OWN........

OSCAR,,,,,,,, HAPPY CHRISTMAS .......

I cant remember the last time the Wets completed a pass.

Fin 77, are you kidding me, you post a lot of stupid stuff but saying that Bush is the entire office rates up there with your most stupid posts. Bush has 950 yards rushing plus another 250 in receptions. Hartline has 1014 in receptions, Bess has 776 and has missed the passed 2 games, Fasano has 300 in receptions, Thomas and Miller have 325 and 240 in rushing respectively. Bush isn't the whole offense, get real, and he will be let go after the season. He'll 28 years old next season, that's on the other side of the hill for RB's. It's better to let him go early than too late, and he'll want a multi year contract. So Bush should be out.

bush doesn't run scared. i don't see it. his dancing costs him at times, but he makes up for it often enough by getting a bigger run out of it too.

scared? the way he trains? in his shape? no way.

Harmel, come on get real, one thing that Ross isn't is cheap, that's really moronic. Has he done things expertly, no. But cheap he's not, he'll spend, maybe not wisely, but he'll spend. Just remember there's a hard cap salary cap.

careful careful careful! oscar trolls and attacks but if you make fun of him he'll tattle on you. sounds like a pusse to me!

The Seer you could say that of every time that passed on those players. Morris was a 6th round draft choice. He was passed on for 6 rounds, that's not a good example. Besides in the same draft they drafted Miller in the 4th, they weren't going to draft another RB in the 6th. We don't know how good Miller is going to be. He's faster and more explosive than Morris.

there is a song called fountain and famosa and its about a pusse boy so everytime i hear it i think instead of fountain and famosa i head a pusse in canosa hahaha welcome to irrelevancy canosa oh wait youve been there for years. now do us all a favor and die so the only person to care is the mortician making money hehehehe

jason witten set the single season catch record for a tight end. we need a gm that can recognize talent like that ;)

the problem with the anti-ireland crowd is that they refuse to acknowledge any single thing he has done right. it makes their debate disingenuous when it is blindly one-sided for the sole purpose of fueling their own argument.

Dashi writes more and more like odin every day.

More and more annoying.
