Answers on Reggie Bush and Jake Long questions

The question of whether the Dolphins want to re-sign Reggie Bush after this season is no longer a question. I have learned the answer and wrote in my column for Monday's Miami Herald the Dolphins would like their leading rusher of the last two seasons to re-sign after this season is over.

Bush is scheduled to be a free agent after this season.

One caveat on that desire to keep Bush in Miami and it's an important one: The Dolphins have a price tag they are willing to pay for Bush. And if the Dolphins can get Bush for that price, then they'll be thrilled to have him.

If, however, Bush wants to break the bank and go to the highest bidder, the Dolphins will be equally happy to turn their lead running back duties to someone else. Who?

Well, again, I was told Sunday evening general manager Jeff Ireland is eager and excited about the possibility of Lamar Miller becoming a more vital part of the offense in 2013.

(Sorry, Daniel Thomas).

There's more.

What will the Dolphins do with long-time left tackle Jake Long after this season?

That's covered in the column as well. It is very telling that the Dolphins believe Jonathan Martin's first few days as an NFL left tackle were significantly better than his first few days as an NFL right tackle.

The team thought Martin to be an F-rated right tackle when he first showed up to training camp. He obviously got better from there and earned the starting job at the position. But when Long went down with a torn triceps injury and Martin was thrust into the starting job on the left side, the Dolphins actually thought Martin immediately performed like a C-plus left tackle.

And he's gotten better from there.

So what are the odds of Miami re-signing Long, who is a free agent after this season? Well, the Dolphins aren't against the notion if Long is going to sign a bargain contract. But the club recognizes someone without a viable answer at LT will be willing to pay Long probably more than the Dolphins are willing to pay.

So Long has one foot out the door.

The column also describes Ireland's plan for this offseason. It's all about adding playmakers. By the way, the best playmaker on defense Sunday was safety Reshad Jones. He recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass.

Jones is signed through next year so he's not going anywhere.

But he tells me that his agent Joel Segal and the team have talked about a contract extension and he hopes to get one done this offseason. "That's what I'd like to see," Jones said. "But I'm just playing and letting my agent and the team take care of the rest."

SURE

I think this Fins team made real progress this year.

They took on a new HC, a new DC and OC and a new QB.

They went on and won at least 7 games with two others they should have won if not for a place kicker who is less than accurate > 45 yards.

Overall there is a lot to be excited about entering this off season. The team has a young solid QB who is showing positive signs as he finishes the year. The team has plenty of money entering free agency to improve the roster. And the team has 5 picks in the top 3 rounds in the upcoming draft.

The irony of verdad's 10:54 post is that Jeff ireland was part of the scouting team that found jason Witten. SO Verdad, we do have a Gm that can recognize the Jason Witten's of the world, haha

WOW, some people!!

Harmel, Right now the Phins have about 7 million in salary cap space. That's in the bottom third of the league in cap space, meaning 2/3 of the teams have more cap space. Next year they'll have about 40 million in cap space. Ross is not cheap.I don't think you understand how the salary cap works......do you.

Aloco.....

HAPPY CHRISTMAS......

and you (and the rest of the blog) may find this hard to believe....but I agree with much of what you have been posting the past few weeks.....I love DC's ideals.....but in the end...its loser talk.....

8-8 = .500.....500 = no playoffs....no playoffs = 5 STRAIGHT YEARS with no playoffs.....7-9 = 4 STRAIGHT losing seasons....

There are MANY VARIABLES to the above math equations......but the ONE CONSTANT is IRELAND.....no matter how many times you run the NUMBERS....that NEGATIVE is always there....and until we lose the NEGATIVE.....the FINS will ALWAYS have problems getting on the POSITIVE side of .500......and the positive side of .500 = playoffs....and playoffs = A CHANCE......

IT'S FUNNY VERDED TALKING A BOUT A PLAYER NOT ON OUR TEAM AND CLAIMING IRELAND HAD A HAND IN PICKING HIM ...........AS MARK NOTED THAT OUT.......

OUR GARAGE MANAGER ALSO HAD A HAND IN PICKING ;;;;;

ODRICK
MISI
THOMAS
EGNEW
SIGING ALL THE FREE ACOR BUSTS.......

ALoco, let's fight!

You know full well Ireland was on the Dallas staff when Bill Parcells drafted Jason Witten. And Verdad said we need a GM that regonize ttalent like this. So if I upset you under one of you many aliases by pointing this out, then too bad.

Alco Misi and Odrick have been solid this year. It's acknowledged that Misi is one of the most improved players on the team He has 65 tackles and 3.5 sacks, not bad for a LB in a 4-3, Odrick is second on the team in sacks and has been solid. Egnew is a rookie, so give him an incomplete, and Thomas is a contributor. BTW Denis Pita the Raven's TE had 1 reception his rookie year, this year his 3rd in the league, he has 61. Rookies do improve. Jacob Tamme of the Broncos had 6 receptions his 1st 2 years in the league, 51 this year.

MARK ,

PLEASE APPLY YOUR LOGIC ON YOUR POST @ 11;22 AM FOR THE DRAFTING OF;;;;;;;

Some people don't get it. Get off the "Fire Ireland" bandwagon. He's doing a very good job. If you've never played the game, please don't make your comments. The Dolphins are two missed field goals away from making the playoffs. One or two key moves and the fins will be there. They need to polish their games a bit more by reducing turnovers. Look how well they played the patriots and the niners. They may have won those games if they didn't turn the ball over. Philbin has them on the right track.

ALoco, verdad, et al, I'm not defending anything. I'm just saying someone said we need a gm that is capable of scouting and picking a Jason Witten. And I'm saying we have a GM that scouted and recommended Jason Witten.

That's it, that's all.

MARK,
VERY GOOD.
YOU R A CANADIAN ,WHICH MEANS YOU R SMARTER THAN MOST OUR AMERICAN BLOGGERS.................

BTW, DID YOU MARRY YOUR GREEK GIRL FRIEND ?

It's hilarious! ProIreland crowd excuses all the misses he took part in Miami when Parcells was here blaming Parcells.

Yet, are the first 2 give him credit for the success of Parcells time whether in Miami or Dallas.

The desperate attempts to make Ireland look or seem somewhat compotent are downright laughable!

Like Brandon Marshall, it's almost as if when Miami has actually finds a true threat and playmaker, they get rid of him. I doubt Bush stays.

Well, Thankyou, ARloco. Merry Christmas for you and yours also.

But true it is that we could have folded with all the injuries that have occurred. A credit to Philbin and his Players. (even Clemons played what I believe was his best Game up to date, hmm...)

OSCAR,

DO YOU HAVE TEETH ?

ALMOST EVERY POST YOU ENDED WITH .(( hmm ))..........

It's competent, competent. Even on Nochebuena I'm teaching.

I'm not even sure that smarts matter that much in Football. If the Player is dedicated and competitive, they can learn anything here as Football is not Astronautics. Whose more backward than Emmitt Smith? Even Marino learned to audible.heehee

Can we send Ireland to the Jests?

ALoco,

Does the lovely Maria like little weenie or big weenie in her beenie?

ALoco,

Can you please answer my question @ 12:22 PM. The Mayans would like to know?

ALoco,

There's a guy on line 2 for you, named Ghengis Kahn. Says you stole the lovely Mari from him.

Me: Mr. Kahn can you hold?

This "team" gets rid of their best player every year. Bye bye Bush.

Mr ALoco,

There's a guy on line 3, says his name is "Underdog"? He says he wants to have a talk with you about sniffing "Sweet Polly's" underwear?

Me: Mr. Dog, can you hold?

Mr. ALoco,

There a gentle on line one, a Mr Viking? He says not of the famous Vikings. He says Viking as in "dish machines".

He wants to know if you'll be in at work today and says you've been running the "rinse cycle" far too long.

ME: Mr Viking, can you hold please?

Ross, save the Dolphins. SELL THE TEAM!!

..Now that the season has ended(for intent and purpose..eliminated from the postseason)Many of us set paramiters for what would be considered improvement this year. Anyone who participated in this exercise had their own criteria. These were mine.

Ability to win close games.. I would say this one gets a D. Sure we beat Seattle, but examine the way we lost the tightly contested games. That is why we get a D here.

The development of Tannehill. Most agreed this was the most important of the criteria. I think the team gets a C.. He wasn't surrounded by enough offensive talent to really be taken to serious. This said. I think at times, actually for 75 percent of the games. He was very good. This speaks well about the future. The point about Tannehill is that he could end up garbage, he could end up being just what we needed. It is impossible to tell from this year. That is why this grade is a C

Coaching..This was definitley an improvement. No doubt about it. Sure there were some mis-steps. some WTF moments. This team played hard all year. We may not have had the best roster of players each week. In fact most weeks I would say roster to roster we were at a disadvantage. These guys got a lot in return. Minus the offense the team played better. From the Special teams, to situational defense, to points allowed. Since we missed the playoffs they don't get an A. I would say solid B.

Front office..I can't stand Ireland. But he definitley gets another year to get this right. Personal feelings aside. It is the right thing to do. Maybe there is a plan that most of us blinded by our own disgust cannot see. I am more then willing to say that I was wrong about Ireland should he prove it. I have my doubts, and if any offseason a team was going to make a change. This one for this team makes perfect sense. So many picks, so much cash...This is Irelands Waterloo. Lets see if he finally gets it right...incomplete

Whats up?

I thought yesterday was one of Tannehill's best games of the year if not his BEST game. Yeah it wasn't his best statistically but he played error free football, made good decisions and did a good job using his legs. I like the way he's played the last couple of games now, after struggling or a few games. Shows me he's making progress and that he is capable of learning from his mistakes.

Kris,

I'm at a loss for your constant criticism of Ireland. It's clear that you are fan of Philbin and that you obviously feel coaching has some influence on a team's performance. I'm guessing that you also didn't think much of Sporano as a HC? So I'm having a hard time understanding how a guy like Philbin gets all of the credit for any success the team has had this year and yet Sparano seems to get a free pass for his four years in Miami, with the blame being unfairly directed at Ireland. How are you able to judge the job that Ireland did while Sparano was here (which Ireland was only in charge of for two years), if you don't consider Sparano to be a good HC. When I look at Sparano's four years as a HC in Miami, I'm having a hard time coming up with anyone that developed under him. Maybe Cam Wake and maybe Rashad Jones but to me that's about it.

I'm struggling with coming up with players that got part under the Sparano regime of coaching. To me, most of that should be on the coach, not the GM.

By the way Kris, I'm thinking of getting into the PREDICTION business...LOL....my 4-12 prediction aside.

I had this Dolphins winning 24-13 this weekend and this being a 'statement' game for Bush with TWO scores. Turned out he had three.

I need to go back and check the math but I think I'm only off on two of my predictions for the Dolphins this year, that being the Bengals game and the Titans game. There may have been a third but I don't think so.

dashi,

i didn't insult you ..why you always use foul language THINKING ,THAT WILL IMPROVE YOUR DUMB POINT ?

Aloco is A funny dude, Most of the time that is., I wonder if he's related to Soiled Bottom, Aloco what do you say, Are you related to Soiled Bottom?

ANY ONE ON LINE 4 ?

Are the Pats resting there regulars I wonder, Have they sewn up Home field advantage?, Dashi, Help a brother out with this info.

It is parameters, DD, not parimeters. Either everybody here sukkks at Grammar or is the same Person writing all these Posts.

First, Merry Christmas (or Happy Holidays) to everyone on the board.

Second, any prayers you guys can say on my behalf are appreciated -- just lost an important relationship.

Third, here's hoping the Dolphins do well in the offseason of 2013 so as to finally be a championship level team this coming season.

There's reason to doubt the Dolphins can get the job done, and I've been a doubter for over a decade. Even so, I do hope that the front office and coaches can put together a great team for the coming year.

If the Colts, Seahawks, and Redskins can do so, then the Dolphins should be able to as well.

Anyway, Happy Holidays Guys!

Darryl Dunphy,

Im sure there's lots of room for disagreement, but here's my Dolphin grade book for the season:

1. Ross B+

His tenure began horrendously. Everyone wanted Sparano/Ireland heads served raw on golden platter. He gave us Srarano on tin platter. Took lots of guts and balls to keep Ireland.

Yet, together they gave us Philbin, maybe our best hc since "Shues" himself.

2. Ireland B-

Many here will wish me tarred and feather for this one. That's for sure.

However, 2012 is easily his best overrall drat ever. He gave us Tannehill. I still dont fully agree with 8th overall, but now our qb position looks at least it has promising future.

We have 2 starters this year. A starter next year in Miller. Yes, I believe, if resigned, Bush will be used more like he was in New Orleans. Miller will start. I expect Vernon will push for a starting position too.

Also, count Rishard Matthews and Michael Egnew in as heavy contributors in 2013. I expect Egnew will also be a starter by midseason 2013. Yes, tar and feather me, I said, I'll own it.

3. Joe Philbin B+

Best hc since Shula. Assenbled a very nice staff. Has laid the foundation for winning attitude. Has restored accountabilty. I can go on and on with superlatives, but, Im sure you get the picture.

4. QB B-

Though an inexperienced college starting qb coming in. I believe he has shown enough to build arond and become our future.

5. DB's

Sean Smith has had his best year as a Dolphin. Not overly spectacular, but, extremely solid. Clemons has become solid enough, but there's plenty of ceiling to get better. Dimitri Patterson looks as if he will solidify the the corner position opposite Smith.

I saved the best for last. Reshad Jones: "pro bowler"!!!

I'll stop here. Because overall, I've seen growth, in almost every position. Of course every position isnt of pro bowl laden attire. But thats what the $40 million dollars and 5 picks in the first 90+ players of the 2013 draft are for.

That's why in 2013 we can all optimistically and legitamately enter into expecting playoffs. Next season is playoffs or bust. Is been an awful long time since a dolfan could legitamately expect that.

DASHI...ALL GOOD.....

THAT WAS NOT YG,THAT WAS SOME ONE ELSE .............

SIGH..........

THESE BLOGGERS PRAYERS WILL NEVER BE ANSWERED..YOU WILL BE BETTER OFF WITHOUT IT..........

Im not a Ireland homer, and I've bashed him as much as anyone here. But I feel that if Im quick to bash bash him bsh him for his failures. I should also be quick to give him his due.

This was probably Ireland's most difficult season ever. Im sure I dont have to explain, at least not to the hate mongers.

Most difficult ever because when everyone wants your head. There's even greater pressure to do a good job. Ireland did a very good job with this year's draft and positioning us to select 5 of the first 90+ players that will be taken in 2013.

That's why I give Ireland a B- for the work he did this offseason itself and I give him an A+ for the EXTREME amount of pressure in which he had to do it under.

Plus, if he ever read this blog, he had to relentlessly endure:

ALOCO CALLING HIM, "THE GARAGE MANAGER"!

New England
Can clinch No. 2 seed with win vs. Dolphins and Texans loss;
can clinch No. 1 seed with win and Texans, Broncos losses
Gonna be a tough day next sunday..

ALoco,

That wasnt someone else posting to you. It was me.

It wasnt very nice of you yesterday posting that I operate under "ALIASES" when you know this to be "UNTRUE".

Anyway, I know that ALoco at times will be just plain "A-Loco".

YG........ THIS YEAR DRAFT WAS PHILBIN AND SHERMAN'S CHOICES ........NO ONE ELESE ...YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT.

THEY KNEW THEY WILL GET TANNEHILL ...............

TO GRADE PHILBIN AFTER OUR GARAGE MANAGER IS AN INSULT TO OUR INTELLIGENT .......

YG.... THAT WASN;T TRUE,I WORKED ALL ....AND I READ THAT AND I ASSUMED YOU WILL KNOW THAT WASN'T ME ...........

FOR LAST TIME..I DON'T INSULT PEOPLE THAT WAY ...

IF I WROTE THAT ,I WOULD ADMIT IT....

THAT EXPLAIN WHY YOU WROTE WHAT YOU WROTE....

BE AWARE OF THE DONKEYS OUT THERE.....

Can anyone tell me when was the last time the jets won a banner to hang in the Stadium? yeah me neither .... Jets in the Cellar Bhahaha

THAT WASN'T ME

THE PROVE WE R LIVING IN THE CELLAR ,IS THE POST @ BY JEFFROW TALKING AND COMPARING US WITH THE JETS WHO ARE RENTIN A CELLAR NEXT TO US THIS YEAR.

the post by ALoco prove that their are stupid fans out there ... were did i compare the jets to the Fins? and learn how to type! can't understand half of what you type.

DASHI,

ROSS HIRED PHILBIN BASED ON HIS RECORD IN GB ,MIKEE DEE HELPED WITH THAT ALSO...........

WHO EXTENDED SPARNO'S CONTRACT?

that was OUR MANAGER'S IDEA AND HIRING HIS SON THE SAME DAY..............

From all interviews I've heard Reggie do on local radio and National radio [ESPN]... Reggie Bush wants to return to Miami. And will be willing to except a fair market value to his position.
Reggie is already a smart and Very Rich man... He did right by his Rookie Money and contracts since... If he gets to stay put, and not have to re-learn a whole new system on another team, I'm certain he wouldn't mind doing so.
AS far as Jake long goes, I don't see Miami overpaying ANYONE... It is just not the way this team cares to move forward. Been there, done that... It cripples your franchise and it seems you rarely get full value from the cost. I'm not saying Long is not worth his money... But it is a real ball busting exposure when your rookie Tackle steps into Jake's position without any serious drop off or collapse. It ain't fair... but there ya go...
Ireland isn't going anywhere this season, and if he nails it he will be here for years to come. In all honesty, I believe Joe Philbin and Mike Sherman are going to have a much closer relationship with Ireland. I don't believe the entire off-season and those who will be brought to Miami are going to have "Ireland Approved" tattooed to they're foreheads... This off season is far too important for Coaching staff to be excluded from the process... and Ross knows better then let it happen... In truth... I think Jeff Ireland knows better then to not have several football minds working... Too big a year, they've worked and given up too much to get the picks and cap space to be stupid with it..

Has anyone noticed it's been teams that werent powerhouses where Brady has had his troubles this year?

He's and his offense has clicked on "all cylinders" against other powerhouse teams. Im thinking Brady has become "bored" playing against non-powerhouse teams.

That's why I believe our chances to upset Brady and the Pats Sunday could be extremely high. Hell, Jax and Henne had Brady on the ropes for a huge part of the game Sunday. Our last game against them, we were only "a couple plays" away from upset.

Dolphins 27 Pats 24

JEFFROW...

THE FACT ,YOU R TALKING JETS AND CELLAR,WHILE WE LIVE IN IT FOR YEARS,IT PROVES THAT OUR FANS AND YOU R ONE OF THEM HAS THE CELLAR IN YOUR MIND.

ALoco,

At 1:44pm.....sorry bud but that's COMPLETE and total nonsene. You can't bash Ireland fir his first four years here for his draft picks and then all of a sudden give the credit to Philbin and Sherman for this last draft. Doesn't work that way.

No if you tell me that Philbin and Sherman had influence on this past draft I will by that. I believe Sherman was very comfortable with Tannehill as his QB. If he hadn't have been then I don't think they would have drafted him at 8.

To give those two credit for this past draft while blaming Ireland for best drafts is nonsense.

R&R Express; Ryan to Reggie.
Then to oscar momma.

wrong Aloco .. how many times did we end up at the bottom of the division over the years? I think the Jets and the Bills own that title

I think that it would be pretty amazing to finish 8-8 under a rookie qb who had only 18 college starts. That's exactly what will happen with an upset of the Pats.

It would be only our 2nd "non-losing" season in 5yrs. This time engineered by a "limited starting rookie qb", Ryan Tannehill.
