Answers on Reggie Bush and Jake Long questions

The question of whether the Dolphins want to re-sign Reggie Bush after this season is no longer a question. I have learned the answer and wrote in my column for Monday's Miami Herald the Dolphins would like their leading rusher of the last two seasons to re-sign after this season is over.

Bush is scheduled to be a free agent after this season.

One caveat on that desire to keep Bush in Miami and it's an important one: The Dolphins have a price tag they are willing to pay for Bush. And if the Dolphins can get Bush for that price, then they'll be thrilled to have him.

If, however, Bush wants to break the bank and go to the highest bidder, the Dolphins will be equally happy to turn their lead running back duties to someone else. Who?

Well, again, I was told Sunday evening general manager Jeff Ireland is eager and excited about the possibility of Lamar Miller becoming a more vital part of the offense in 2013.

(Sorry, Daniel Thomas).

There's more.

What will the Dolphins do with long-time left tackle Jake Long after this season?

That's covered in the column as well. It is very telling that the Dolphins believe Jonathan Martin's first few days as an NFL left tackle were significantly better than his first few days as an NFL right tackle.

The team thought Martin to be an F-rated right tackle when he first showed up to training camp. He obviously got better from there and earned the starting job at the position. But when Long went down with a torn triceps injury and Martin was thrust into the starting job on the left side, the Dolphins actually thought Martin immediately performed like a C-plus left tackle.

And he's gotten better from there.

So what are the odds of Miami re-signing Long, who is a free agent after this season? Well, the Dolphins aren't against the notion if Long is going to sign a bargain contract. But the club recognizes someone without a viable answer at LT will be willing to pay Long probably more than the Dolphins are willing to pay.

So Long has one foot out the door.

The column also describes Ireland's plan for this offseason. It's all about adding playmakers. By the way, the best playmaker on defense Sunday was safety Reshad Jones. He recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass.

Jones is signed through next year so he's not going anywhere.

But he tells me that his agent Joel Segal and the team have talked about a contract extension and he hopes to get one done this offseason. "That's what I'd like to see," Jones said. "But I'm just playing and letting my agent and the team take care of the rest."

ALoco,

The two mosted hated words that you can hear coming from a woman as a single male are:

1. Sweetie. Sweetie is female slang for, "You'll never have chance to get any of this".

2. Youre like a brother to me. See #1

...I know some hard core Browns fans..going back to the OG Browns before Modell moved them in the middle of the 95 season. Bellicheck is a freekin hero for a lot of old school Browns fans for how he had that franchise turned around. Remember 94 they were something like 11-5 they beat the Pats in a playoff game, and lost to Pitt in the divisional round(I think, I don't believe it was the AFC championship game)..go back and look at the staff of coaches and young front office guys Belicheck hired. It was quite amazing. These Cleveland fans say that the whole Art Modell disaster derailed a 95 team picked as favorites to win the AFC. That the heart was ripped out of their souls.

Sure you can look at the win loss record and say it was a failure. I would even bet Belicheck would agree. I see it as a precurcor to his greatness, and his ability to surround himself with smart football minds. This has always been a staple of Belicheck teams.

YG..THESE ARE GOOD ..

WHAT ABOUT DD ? WHAT THE MOST HATED WRODS YOU HEAR THIS TIME OF THE YEAR ?

Matthew Stafford had 41 tds passing in 2011. Because of a injury decimated offense in 2012, he now has only 17 tds passing.

This was/is a very easy decision to make. Even for Ireland. Not only has Martin outplayed Long but Martin is younger, cheaper, & oh yeah...healthy. Martin's natural position is LT & he's clearly a better LT than RT. Nate Garner has played very well @ RT & I don't see any reason why he shouldn't be the starter going into next season. Yes we'll need a backup swing Tackle but I like the guys we have as starters.

The one O-line position that Ireland/Philbin MAY make a change at starter is RG. Although I don't think Jerry has played poorly this year I really don't know what the coaches think of him.

.

..So I wrote my reasoning as to what happened with Egnew, and his future here a week back. He finally got to play, and although he didn't contribute in the stat line. His one rep was telling of what kind of offense we could have if we had a tight end that has his skill set. The blocking issue we all know. I also said that I thought that he was slow to understand the scheme of this offense.(I have no evidence of this, just my opinion) Anyway..His 1 rep the Phins spread the field wide on both sides empty backfield, and motion. Quite a different look..It allowed the seem recievers to get vertical against lesser skilled cover guys. Both Egnew, and Matthews ran seem routes and both were open. Tannehill made his best throw of the day a perfect throw over the shoulder of the Buffalo linebacker...A mismatch in any offenses favor.

Again my opinion. But I do not think we could run this concept with any of our other tight ends, as they are not believeable down the field pass catching threats..Not in in line routes anyway..On the boundary, or in confusion sure. But not run fast straight, beat your man ways.

..Aloco. I agree. Quite a blessing no doubt. I have only been with this girl for a little more then 2 months. I haven't seen her side of crazy that every woman posesses. I need to experience this before I can deal with those 2 words(I'm pregnant)

No FA's want to come here because the Dolphins have a long history of mistreating their best players. The list is long from Marino, Zach T, JT, Patrick Surtain, Ricky Williams, Joey Porter, Brandon Marshall, and now Reggie Bush and Jake Long. Shula would never have done that.

Mike,

Do you REALLY believe that??? I'm not one for defending Ireland BUT look at the drafts that Wannstadt, Saban, & Cameron had. The cupboard was virtually BARE when Parcells & Ireland took over & they took over a historically bad 1-15 team.

Every single one of Parcells/Ireland's first round picks were FAR better than draft picks like Tedd Ginn or Jason Allen that killed us. If you truly want to blame someone than you need to go back to when Wayne Huzienga took over the team.

We Have Draft Picks,

Huzienga hired Parcells who turned the team around in 1 year. Parcells didnt like Ross's celebrity circus and its been downhill every day since Parcells left. Good football people turn a team around in 1 year so dont go blame what happened 5 years ago. GEEZ!

"Huzienga hired Parcells who turned the team around in 1 year. Parcells didnt like Ross's celebrity circus and its been downhill every day since Parcells left. Good football people turn a team around in 1 year so dont go blame what happened 5 years ago. GEEZ!"

I think your memory is a bit off. We miraculously made the playoffs in Parcells' first year but the team had no chance after Parcells drafted Henne to be Pennington's replacement.

BTW--Brady was injured that season which gave us a chance at the division. Had Brady not suffered season ending knee surgery this team would have never made the playoffs in 2008.

1-15 to 11-5 in Parcells 1st year.

WHDP, that was Ireland that drafted Henne.

...There are other LT's that are going to be free agents this offseason that may be courted as better value then Jake Long..Ryan Clady, and Brendan Albert off the top of my head. This may sound like blasphemy, as Long is a hero here. But look at recent production, take the name off the back of the uniform, and who is a better value? Long will no doubt be a huge signing for whatever team decides to reserve his rights. And even with Martin grading out well. I'm not convinced the Phins will not franchise Long(right or wrong)..

It is easy for me to say let him go. Lets use that contract money somewhere else. That is what I would do. No doubt a knee jerk reaction to the money, and Martins play. This is why I type opinions, and don't make decisions on personel. But I think we have played our best football since he has been injured. Does this have anything to do with him being out? I don't know.

We could explore deepening this unit via free agency. Obviously the draft as well. I think if we upgrade our skill positions on offense it would offset the loss of Long. Plenty of teams find offesnive success without the benifit of outstanding line play. They just have superior talent in other areas. Would losing Long be the worst case scenario? Not if we improved the weapons Tannehill has at jis desposal.

Sign bush to a 2 year deal, pay him well, Thomas will be cheap, if healthy, keep him, put the $ into a TE and WR, draft DB's. Let jake go, draft a OL, pick up some FA linemen. Say hello to the playoffs!

Trust no Woman in that respect. They are the ones that can get pregnant and not Us males. Nothing to do with It.

Veteran fan says:

Ireland has used 14 draft picks on skill position players yet doesnt have one playmaker from 14 picks!
====================================================
Those numbers may be accurate but let's face reality; I don't see Ireland getting fired. I see him working more closely with Philbin and Sherman to get their input.

Are some very crazy here or what?

NE, under Belichick has always had superior O line Play. I wonder why.

I'm not convinced the Phins will not franchise Long(right or wrong)..

Daryl,

When you have a rookie come in & outplay your highest paid player even the most loyal Jake Long supporters need to take notice. The Dolphins have paid Jake Long a sh#t load of money over the past five years. Three of those years were excellent seasons where he was arguably the best LT in football BUT no one can deny the injuries & the decline in performance that has taken place over the last two seasons.

He's been more than well compensated by us & at this point we owe him nothing. Loyalty does not trump the business of side of things. Yeremiah Bell was also la warrior & a team leader but he was let go. Long just costs too much money & that's just the way the NFL & the rest of the world works.Based on his performance over the last two years he's just not worth what a top LT makes.

Has a player EVER been franchised who finished the season on IR??? If so that sounds insane to me.

Promichael,

Ireland will be back & I think it behooves him to listen to Philbin & Sherman when it comes to offensive players.

As for what Veteran said--I don't agree. Hartline may not be a Number 1 WR but he was HUGE for this team this season. I find it frightening to imagine what this offense would have looked like w/o him. In addition I realize fans are expecting rookies to be superstars from Day One but let's see what happens with Tannehill, Miller, & Matthews in their 2nd & 3rd seasons before the book is written on them.

Yesterday 's Gone ,what in the H*ll makes you think Latimore would be around in the 7 th round.(he'll be gone by the 4th if he enters)and by the way We would never be smart enough to draft him(see Willis McGahee)

Picks

Martin didn't outplay Long. Even ex SB lineman Randy Cross said Martin is no Long. I guess you know better.

Sims,

If you took the time to actually read my post regarding Lattimore, then you would know "wehat the hell" I mean.

I also wrote "according to Walter camp". I also wrote in one post, "I would actualluy take a chance on him 4th-5th rd".

Actaully reading and following posts regarding a certain subject is a beautiful thing. Some dont, so "what the hell".

We all have opinions, but only idiots think they actually know better than those that spend 60 hours a week working directly every day with pro players.

YG learning how to write on Internet.

Get Real,

That's not what Randy Cross said. What Randy Cross actually said is that "Jake Long is the best LT in football when he's healthy but he hasn't been healthy."

You would make a great GM paying a guy over $11 Million a year who is on IR & has been decimated by injuries over the last two seasons. That sounds like a smart business decision to me.

Get Real,

Martin certainly hasnt been any worse than Long. If that were the case, Armando wouldnt have said Martin is now getting B-grades as a LT, now would he?

Also youre hearing, "Long wont be franchised" and being resigned at the "right price". Not a glowing endorsement that Martin is a "downgrade" to the "present day" Jake Long.

We're not talking 2008 Jake Long in comparison here. Even then Long had speedrusher issues. Just not quite as bad as they seem to be now.

Get Real,

I know what I see & what I've seen is that the O-line has played better since Martin moved to LT & Garner started at RT. If you disagree with me then that's fine.

For the record--I never said that I know better than people who get paid to do this for a living.

Dude, Are you in a state that allows same sex Marriage?

It is "very realistic" to allow a 1st overall pick to walk. Just last season the Texans allowed Mario Williams to "take a hike".

Competively, allowing Long to walk cant come back to haunt us. He doesnt score any points, his impact is only as great as those around him.

YG,

Stop it. You're making too much sense. Even though Long is on IR he's still a Greek God !!!

YG,

Exactly. And how did that move workout for the Texans' defense who didn't break the bank & for the Bills' defense that did???

It has been established they aren't giving the often injured Long crazy money. Obviously I'm talking about when he is healthy. If Martin gets injured he will play worse too, duh.

You guys are foolishly taking things out of context. Calm down.

WHDP,

I know its off topic. But I wanna go out on a limb and predict. In the 2013-14 season, Andrew Luck and Indy dont make the playoffs and the Dolphins do.

Reason being the Colts have operated under "lots of emotion" this season due to the Chuck Pagano cancer issue. Overly zapped emotion are the primary culprit of "performanc burnout".

Plus, next season, dc's will have a better blueprint on stopping Luck(at least limiting) and the Colt offense. This and the above should be enough to shatter the Colts 2013-14 playoff dreams.

On the other hand, The Dolphins truly look like a team of rising prospects. We have the money, current foundation, and 2013 draft picks to make it so.

Wtfcom,Iam a Female. Love the Dolphins which makes my Husband go nuts.
Love everything FOOTBALL.
Born and raised in Miami.
Thanks for asking.

Get Real,

Fortunately for us we drafted Martin. Had we not, and Long went down this year, Jerry probably goes to LT. It could have been much worse.

Even if Martin is the starter and Long walks. We still need better LT replacement options than we presently have. Martin may have been the great LT option when your starter goes down, in nfl history.

Lets just stop trying to compare and be very thankful for that. There's no other team in the league can say they were as prepared for this as we have been this year.

I agree that Ross is way to clueless an owner to fire Ireland. Sad.

Yesterday,

It may very well be that Ireland had that in mind when he drafted Martin.

The Colts and Luck have several things going against them in effort to make playoffs next year.

1. A weakened draft as a result of making the playoffs. See Dolphins 2008

2. A much tougher schedule. Again, see 2008.

3. The older vets will be a year older and at least 1/2 step slower.

4. DC's will have a better plan to defend thier offense. Beginning with the defensive blueprint that will be used to oust them from this year's playoffs. See Fins 2008.

5. The Pagano emotional wave theyre riding will begin to ebb.

There you have it.

"I know its off topic. But I wanna go out on a limb and predict. In the 2013-14 season, Andrew Luck and Indy dont make the playoffs and the Dolphins do.

YG,

It's a fair question to raise. Something to be said for a team that needs to truly REBUILD & then outperforms expectations too quickly. This is exactly what happened with us in 2008.

The truth is that the Colts defense has a LOT of issues. They are undersized & their two best players Freeny & Mathis are not getting any younger. The O-line is also not very good for the Colts & their running game is inconsistent.

I give Andrew Luck & his receivers a ton of credit for making the playoffs but they're just an average football team at this point.

Yesterday,
It may very well be that Ireland had that in mind when he drafted Martin.
Posted by: Get real | December 24, 2012 at 05:27 PM

You dont sayyy.......???

Is that an underhanded and very passive way of saying that Ireland could actually be mre of an astute gm than he's given credit for?

I mean..... this actually suggest Ireland was "FULLY AWARE" of Long's constant decline the past 3 seasons. LOL...

Anytime a 1st rd draft pick walks its a humongeous failure on whomever drafted him....

On the other hand, The Dolphins truly look like a team of rising prospects. We have the money, current foundation, and 2013 draft picks to make it so.

YG,

Our franchise has a great opportunity to FINALLY turn the corner BUT we have spend that money wisely & most importantly we have hit HR's on some of those draft picks. Ireland has hit singles & even some doubles in the draft but now he needs to hit HR's.

Ireland's best pick is looking like taking Reshad Jones in the 5th or 6th round.

WHDP,

The Skins and Seahawks are the only "rookie qb led" teams that I see have chance to repeat a playoff performance in 2013. The Dolphins are in the best position of rookie qb led teams to "rise into" 2013's playoffs.

The Colts seem like the rookie qb led team least likely to repeat 2012's performance.

In 2009, as result of the "1yr boom" we drafted 27th and played a playoff team regular season schedule. All of this 1yr removed from 1-15. See the 2011 "Suck for Luck" Colts.

Mike,

So letting Mario Williams go the Bills was a humongous failure for the Texans??? Last time I checked they were 12-3 & one of the best teams in the NFL.

YG,

I agree. Seattle's defense is REALLY good & they have an excellent running game. The Redskins have the best running game in the NFL so that definitely helps....

Mike,

Actually, unless your 1st overall pick is at qb and he fails, it isnt a "HUMONGUS" failure.

How much did the Texans miss Mario Williams? Only missing on a 1st overall qb pick sets a franchise back years.

Anything else is just "highly unfortunate". Jake Long walking doesnt even set us back 1 season. Its just highly unfortunate a 1st overall pick ended that way.

WHDP, yes it is a monumental failure that Houston used a high 1st rd pick on a guy and got absolutely nothing for him.

Mike,

Drafting Long wasnt a failure. Your gm would have to be a great prophet or psychic to predict injuries would bring him down.

It wasnt normal performance issue. Healthy he's easily a top 3 LT. But after 3 successive season of being injury and performance ridden. Its tough to give break the bank money to even Jake Long.

Stopped by just to take a look on whats going on and I must say how sad it is that AND I MEAN sad that Douchi and YEStERDAYSGONE4 EVER are posting for almost 9 stright hours on a blog., Then again not really surprised there low life losers that even there family wont have them over..I guess Armando must have finally banned Odindouche otherwise that Idiot would be here too..
Anyway you all have a Great christmas.

In hindsight Long was a huge failure. He didnt help the team win even when healthy. A lineman should never be the top pick.

I will enjoy seeing Te'o vs the Alabama O, YG. Then, we'll talk.
