Bills at Dolphins: I got it you take it

It's not sexy or exciting to read about, but since the Mayans were absolutely wrong and the world goes on and the NFL season continues this weekend, I want to discuss perhaps the most unsung issue facing the Dolphins and Bills this weekend.

It's the issue that will likely decide this game.

It's the issue that a majority of NFL coaches believe decides most NFL games.

Turnovers.

The Dolphins are terrible at causing them or benefitting from them. They have. for example, recovered only three fumbles this year. Only Kansas City and Philadelphia are worse with two recovered fumbles.

The Dolphins total take-away number this year is 12. That's nine interceptions and three recovered fumbles.

The Patriots, by contrast, have 20 recovered fumbles this year and 16 more interceptions. In fact, 10 teams have recovered more fumbles than the Dolphins have total take-aways so far. It's baffling to defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle.

“We’ve done everything and then some, and we’re going to continue to do it," Coyle said. "Really, I say this to you guys, I don’t think there is a team in the league that works harder, not just as a result of what’s been happening this season, but from April when Coach Philbin came here, it’s been a
point of emphasis in every practice."

The good news for the Dolphins is the Bills pose a threat to their vast inability to come up with take-aways because Buffalo is among the most philanthropic teams with the football in the NFL. The Bills have given the football up 29 this season.

Only five teams have given it up more.

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has 15 interceptions. He's fumbled seven times and lost five. The man is a machine!

C.J. Spiller has lost both his fumbles this year and the Dolphins are probably bemoaning the fact Fred Jackson, he of the four lost fumbles, is not playing Sunday.

The point is while the Dolphins are terrible at taking the ball away, the Bills are almost equally terrible at keeping the ball safe.

It is the moveable force against the resistable object.

SpOrano led the Dolphins to the playoffs the same year we led the league in turnovers.

With Parcells, Ireland and the Wildcat Offense.

If that doesn't put the importance of it into perspective, nothing will.

Dimitri Patterson is going to **LOOK** like an All World Hall Of Famer the first game he plays for Miami.

Of course, after nearly a seasons worth of Carroll, Wilson and Clemons, it shouldn't be too big of a feat.

Turnovers? Save for a few misses by Carpenter and were talking Wildcard!

If we can pull a couple of Ballhawks out of this off season to go along with Patterson, we'll be over that Proverbial Hump!

In other words armando, EXPECT A VERY UGLY MUNDANE GAME ON SUNDAY...pretty much the status quo!!....only fans of both teams should watch this game and i use the term "FANS" reluctantly...

Odin,

Your holiday order is ready for pick up.

Is this Dimitri any good ?............

all i would like to hear about on sunday is miami winning and then OFFICIALLY being eliminated from playoff contention following the game to ensure this team does not play beyond the regular season finale against NE.....

Speaking of fumbles and turnovers...I have to laugh...when I think about the Jets. They are finally getting around to Sparano getting some of the blame for the Jets lousy offense. For some reason Parcells thought he would be a good HC for the Phins. What a blunder on his part. The trifecta has nearly run it's course like the Mayan calendar.

Agree with your post, Armando. Turnovers can easily mean the difference between winning and losing. It is really mystifying how the Dolphins seem to avoid both interceptions AND fumble recoveries.

But I have noticed over the years, especially regarding fumbles, the Dolphins seldom have a lot of guys around a loose ball. When I watch the Pats for instance, a loose ball is almost always covered by one of the many Patriots players in the TV camera window. Is this "hustle" to be around the ball, the element the Dolphins are missing?

Interceptions are a little different but it still helps to have as many players as possible around the ball, in case of tips, over/underthrows, etc. Then, players just have to catch the ball. Unfortunately, again, the Dolphins don't seem to get multiple players around a passed ball and worse, they seem to have an abnormally high number of DBs and LBs that can't catch.

It will certainly be a welcome change if Coyle can produce a turnaround in the turnover ratio. It's the difference between winning and losing several games each year.

Can't wait to get burned by Fitzpatrick.
Two touchdowns courtesy of me!

We would like to see a Complete Game from these Dolphins for a change.

Hartline and Bess both might be out with back issues...

Yeah, matty. Binns, Matthews and Moore??

Mastrud nursing a hamstring, also. Egnew, anyone?

Have you seen Marlon Moore run his routes? a la Paul Warfield only without the latter's grace.

The Binns kid seems like a keeper.. held his own on Sunday after being claimed off waivers on tuesday.. THe Pats wanted him as well.

Philbin seems to like Binns. Referenced on one his talents is that he could learn the playbook in a short time... LOL

By any measure I can think of, this has been a successful year for the Dolphins. The record is better than expected. The WRs and the rookie QB are better than expected. The Dolphins' future looks good. Many commentators have made this same point, yet...

Armando always feel compelled to write something that makes the Dolphins look terrible.

Cheerleaders cheer; coaches critique. Isn't it OK to be anywhere within this spectrum and still be a fan?

I'm actually a little pumped to see these young bucks in action!! No excuses either. Bad team and at home.

WHAT IS YORE FAVORTE GAME OF THE PRICE IS RIGHT??? I LIKE PLINKO AND ALSO THE MAN THAT YODELLS AND THE CLOCK GAME!!! THEY ARE THE BEST GAMES THE OTHER GAMES ARE STUPID.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

All I know is this, the Miami coaches and front office is no where near the joke of the Jets!!!

Not even close!!

Another yawner game.

Bobby,

I just pissed myself from laughing at that post!!!

You are insane!!!

I like the game where you push your fist through and grab a card.

Hey, the Jets have won a bunch of playoff games the last 5 years. The Dolphins HAVENT!!!!!!!!

Another boring game on Sunday.

I'm actually a little pumped to see these young bucks in action!! No excuses either. Bad team and at home. -MOKIKI

MOKIKI, I am too. Haven't been this excited since the Dolphins were 4-3 and went into the tailspin. I'm hoping Tannehill can connect with the new guys and we get an idea of what the future brings. Wouldn't hurt if the running game gets going, too. New blood in DB area may show some changes.

I'm more interested to see the Jets' season go further down the toilet.

Rex Ryan is almost at boiling point, where he explodes.

Beating a division rival is always exciting football. Go Phins!

Two real games left then we enter the LONG, DARK off season.

I don't know about you, but I really, really want this team to make the playoffs and become relevant again.

Can we send Irescum to the Jests?

The issue with TOs is probably because the defense is still learning the scheme. They are thinking too much instead of reacting.

It was just the end of a Mayan 5,000 year calendar, doomers who said it was the end of the world. The Dolphins should win and the reserve receivers should step up.

We should be 8-6 god damn it!

Zonk,
Theyre worse than the Fins, let Rex and Tannebum keep screwing them up..

Boulder, I think the lack of turnover lends itself to the fact that they are a solid defense but not a very aggressive one outside of Reshad Jones and Cam Wake. All the 9 other guys spend a lot of time reacting instead of imposing themselves. Guys like Sean Smith (I do like him as a player) and whoever the other corner are seem like their primary responsibility is to just make sure they don't give up the big play - bend but don't break if you will. It's lent itself to the Dolphins being an effective defense as far as not giving up a lot of points and stiffening up inthe red zone but not very good at creating turnovers.

That's I'd like to see an aggressive corner and another ball hawking safety in the mould of Thomas from Seattle added (or another super athletic pass rusher a la Dion Jordan). I think it would help bring that element to the defense and compliment the steady players we already have.

NH, I'm with you. I want to see them crush in these last two games and maybe make the playoffs. The Jets made it from a similar perch a couple of years back and made it to the AFC championship game.

Let's go Dolphins!!

Last year we started terribly at 0-7. This year, with a completely new coaching staff and a Rookie Starting QB we've obviously improved. Everything including the stats bear this out.

With two weeks left to go, we've already won as many games as last year. To boot, we're still alive in the playoff picture(last year we were out before the season got started).

So once again, ALoco PROVES his retardation is second to NONE. Nice work Spazmo.

DO ENYBOODY ELSE WEESH THEESE DUMBFVCK WOOD JUS STFU?

Mark your spot on. Tell me when was the last time you seen a player on this team try to strip the ball carrier. Its like all there taught to do is tackle after the player catches the ball. The CB from the Bears goes for the strip everytime the ball carrier in his area. I cant tell you the last time any CB or S broke on a ball and intercepted it, there are the playmakers were missing.

Hey, the Redskins, Colts, Dolphins, and Seahawks all have rookie QB's and all are going to the playoffs EXCEPT US!! Rookie QB is NO EXCUSE!

crickets..

CB's that have confidence in their abilities make plays on the ball as they make tackles.

Other than Reshad Jones, our secondary has their hands full just trying to make the stop. Our motto: Better Safe Than Sorry!

Hey, We got a 1st rd QB and we STILL STINK!

I must say I am excited to see some new guys step in and step up. 2013. Trust in JP. On a side note even if we end up winning the Superbowl I still want Jeff Ireland gone.

Clue, Odin,

Our defense would be perfect if we were New Orleans or Detroit where if we had an explosive offense but we still have an immature offense and at times we almost need the defense to help out the offense beyond slowing down the opposing offense, we need to score on defense to beat the best teams.

Sushi!!

Why Are You Implementing Some Of Dashi's Writing Style!!

With Your Characters!!

Not Cool!! B U T T MUNCH!!

You Cry And Complain!! Yet!! You Copy The Dashi!!

BE EASY CHAMP!!!

Oh, And FYI Dashi Is Sorry!! IF I GET MAD!! WHEN PEOPLE REPEAT THE SAME IGNORANT REMARK!!! OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!

You Guys Talk About Living In The NOW!! YET!! LOVE BRINGING UP!! THE SENSELESS PAST!!!

REGURGITATING!! NONSENSE!!

DO YOU SEE!! DASHI TALK ABOUT DANSBY!! AND REPEAT THE SAME THING!! WITHOUT GIVING A REASON??

Hell NO!!

But You Guys Have Been Repeating The Same Nonsense!! Fire Ireland!! Ireland Sucks!! Waaahhhh!! Waaaahhhh!!!

A MILLION F'ING TIMES!!!

Some Of You Guys Are Insane!!! With The Ireland!! C R A P!!!

Dashi!! Would Only Hope!! Some Of You Guys!! Were As Passionate About The Heat!! As You Are About The Dolphins!!

CAUSE IF YOU WANT A REAL DEFINITION OF INEPTITUDE!! LOOK AT ERIK SPOELSTRA!! (Any COACH That Last Name Starts With SPO!! HAS TO BE THE DUMBEST!! LEAST INVENTIVE!! SOFTEST COACH IN HIS PROFESSION!!)

Yet!! Winning Covers Everything!!

Just Look At The Ignorant Wannstedt Statements In The Last Post!! You Have A Few Clowns That Think Wannstedt was A Good Coach!! Because The Team Had A Winning Record A Couple Seasons!! Never Mind That He Destroyed!! The Team!!

The offense is inept. Ireland has used 14 draft picks on skill positions and doesnt have one playmaker to show for it. YIKES!

Douchi,

The last 4 HC's make Wannstedt look like Vince Lombardi.

YG,

I've got to call you out for the last blog, bud. Just a week or two ago you were on here saying that the Dolphins need to draft at least a couple of WRs in the draft and move on from Moore and Matthews because one was a FA and the other was a 6th round pick. Now I read you saying that Matthews is possibly hidden 'gold'. I mean, what's changed in a week?

I've always liked Matthews and that was my argument with you at the time. So, I hate calling you out on this but I hope you'll realize that this what drives some of these guys crazy about you. It's where the 'flip-flop' stuff comes from.

Hoping you'll take this as some friendly advice, rather than flip out about it.

Dashi, Spoeltra has had the Heat in the playoffs eveery single year hes been head coach. What more can you ask? The team has been to 2 str8 Finals winning 1. Im not sure why your bashing Spo he's done a far better job then any other coach not named Shula for the Dolphins

Who cares about the garbage Dolphins?

Btw guys, one of the latest mocks on CNNSI had Jarvis Jones following all the way to us and T'eo dropping into the 20's, I think to the Giants. Doesn't mean any of this will happen but I also think very little is etched in stone with this draft. I think it's going to be one of the most unpredictable in NFL history. I've also seen the OLBer kid be mock to us too. Is is Monroe?

Clue,

Exactly!!

Winning Cover Everything!!

Spo Is The Dumbest Coach In The NBA!! But The Team Wins!! And You Ask Heat Fans!! And They Will Say Coaching Doesn't Matter In The NBA!! Which Is Straight Ignorance!! Coaching In Any Sport Matters!!

And Don't Worry!! If Spo Wins 1 More Title!! He Is A HOF COACH IN THE NBA!! (Only 5 NBA COACHES HAVE WON 2 OR MORE TITLES!!)

But You Can't Have A More Sissified Coach Than Spo!! And Let's Not Even Talk X's And O's!! He Is On The Record Saying That He Doesn't Call Plays!! And The Defense!! Runs The Same Set All Game!! Man To Man!!

Ask Yourself This!! How Many Games A Season!! Will The Heat Win If D.Rivers Or P.Jackson Was Head Coach Of This Team!! Or Popabitch!!

Then See What Spo Is Doing!! And You Have Your Answer!! Mike Woodson Is A Better Coach!!

Jeff Ireland is a very busy man with a multitude of responsibilities. It would be so wrong to assume that he has unlimited time to research the draft each year. I hope he finds the time this year to do some investigation before selecting players. For instance, if he had known that Michael Egnew couldn't block, he might have hesitated before taking him in the third round. If he can't find the time this year, I certainly understand, but it would be nice if he drafted a good player or two. I don't want to sound critical, obviously the man is a personnel genius, with a particular affinity for identifying acorns.

Odinseye I wanted the fake character "Aloco" to disappear for a while now. It's an imagined character played by some weirdo in here. But he won't stop the routine so now any time I see a post in all caps I scroll right on by. Works pretty well, haven't read one thing "Aloco" has said,,,or better yet HASN'T SAID, in weeks.

This defense was much better under Nolan and Mr. Coyle I hate to break it to you, they played much harder under Nolan! Last year the defense had a ton of potential interceptions dropped. While they didn't get the interception they at least were in position and prevented the play from developing. This year they are not even in position.

"Dashi, Spoeltra has had the Heat in the playoffs eveery single year hes been head coach."

Clue I know this isn't my conversation but I had to reply. COME ON MAN! Are you serious? Heat fans crack me up. He's coaching a stacked team. That's like saying Chan Gaileyt was a great coach because he won a super bowl. Spo didn't build that team, Riley did. And deserves full credit. Spoelstra isn't teaching Lebron and crew as much as he's probably learning from them.

IMO The mark of a great coach is to take inferior talent and teach them to be winners. Seriously, how much coaching does he actually have to do? He was given an all star cast and gets to watch them out perform everyone because of their superior talent.

I guarantee you if Spo was coaching the Bulls they wouldn't be half of what they are, and that's without Derrick Rose right now.

This defense was much better under Nolan and Mr. Coyle I hate to break it to you, they played much harder under Nolan!

I'm glad you brought this up, I wanted to look at the numbers. Here they are (You should have looked before making your declaration).

1. Points allowed in 11' = 313,,,,,pts allowed in 12'=279
Very similar, if the Dolphins hold the next two teams to under 34 points it will be the same. Im expecting they don't, but still the numbers will be very similar, even with the injuries and losing Vontae this year.

2. Yards in 11'= 5,522,,,,yds in 12' = 4,884
That means 638 yds to be at last years numbers, again, the same.

3. yds per play 2011=5.3,,,,2012= 5.2 = better

4. 1st downs,,,2011= 310,,,,2012= 275 = better

5. 3rd down D 2011= 16th,,,2012 = 5th = MUCH BETTER

6. Red zone D 2011 = 20th,,2012 = 1ST = hOLY S*&T!

7. Passing TDS against) 2011 = 24 / 2012 = 15

So unless we are going to give up 9 tds in two games this category is better.

8. They have less interceptions this year than last. 16 to 9

9. Yards per pass attempt 2011= 6.3/ 2012 = 6.1 = better

10. Rush yds 2011 = 1530 2012 = 1413 = around the same

11. Rush td's 2011= 88/ 2012 = 61 = much better

12. FUMBLE RECOVERYS! 2011 = 3/ 2012 = 3

One more and they will be better this year.
