Dolphins fear worst as Long MRI Monday

Publicly, coach Joe Philbin barely acknowledged the Jake Long injury, saying after the game he had no update on the matter. And players who have been told not to comment on injuries towed the line. "Can't comment on injuries," Jonathan Martin said.

But privately?

Two players told me they heard Long tore his left triceps and one staffer said that's the early diagnosis. Long had an X-ray after the game whose results were inconclusive. Jeff Darlington of the NFL Network is reporting Long will have an MRI on Monday to get a clearer picture but that, "It doesn't look good."

If what everyone fears is reality, Martin is expected to take over at left tackle for the Dolphins. He played the position throughout the game Sunday. He was a left tackle at Stanford.

Long, meanwhile, will go into the offseason unsigned and uncertain of his future. The Dolphins can obviously try to sign him, franchise him, or let him test the market in free agency.

I doubt they allow him to test the market. Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland has said in the past that Jake Long will finish his career with the Dolphins but, as you know, things can change in the NFL.

One never knows.

First

With one arm Long is still a top LT. No way they let him walk.

The only way the Phins can keep Long is to franchise him.
Jake Long does not want to play for this crappy team any longer.

Armando, Is it true you banned the drunk/drug infested hippie Odinstank?

Not a good day for Tannehill, but at least he hung in there and started getting it together late in the game.

Take away the botched punt, the bogus pi on jones and the no call face mask on Tannehill, and it's a different game.

It's unfortunate any way you look at it. Never want a great player to go out on an injury. But I'm sticking with my position, Long isn't worth breaking the bank over. No player currently on the team is. Everyone is expendable. It'll be the GM/HC's decision. But decisions like these are how teams succeed or fail. It's having the RIGHT mix of players (not only the right character, but the right talent). I'm supportive of whatever decision the team makes on this matter (given that it doesn't eat up all the CAP space).

DC Dolfan | December 02, 2012 at 05:59 PM

Again at the end of last Season you were hoping it was the injuries but started to see significant drop off in play. Should have in a rebuild looked to move him for more picks. Now that they didn't they will keep him dropping big guaranteed cash on the next Bosselli given the big ?'s around him will scare some teams away.

I don't believe Long has much left in the tank. His stats prove that he isn't he elite LT he once was.

Would he want to play for a SB contender or finish his career with a team that is probably THREE years away from going to the playofs?

Fins will probably let him test FA (offers will most likely be less than the franchise tag $$) and then pay him a lesser amount.

Is Long the problem or is it 90% of all the other starters? This team is mediocre just about everywhere.

Miami of late have been paying players what they felt their value is currently is. I can't see Long being franchised or getting top dollar at his position, specially if Long goes on IR and Martin performs well the rest of the season.

Jake Long was a top 2 LT in 2008, 2009 & 2010. He was a good to very good LT in 2011. But in 2012 he is average at best. Even worst, this is the third straight year in which he has had significant injuries.

This is not a player to resign unless he is willing to play for average pay plus an injury discount. This is salary cap disaster waiting to happen. Naturally, the Dolphins will probably resign Long to $18 Million per season for ten years.

Taking Long over Ryan hurts Fin fans more when they see their careers going in opposite directions.

Thank you Parcells for nothing

Luck had 4yrs of college starting experince. I like Tannehill's upside, but not at 8th overall.

After missing out on RG3 and Luck, I cant believe some in here are still saying they wouldnt root for thier team to lose. Of course not, under normal circustances.

But is the proper circumstance exists, and you dont root for your team to lose to get better, then you're not a real fan of the team either.

Dammit, Im rooting for losing the remaining 5 games. Whether you so-called unloyal loyalist love it or not. What Ive seen on the playing field thus far this year. Only tells me that if it isnt drastically upgraded there will be even more losing for years to come.

We need to be in the best draft position possible to get the highest upgrades possible. Bury your misplaced prides in that!

POST OF THE SEASON.......

I wasn't on the suck for Luck wagon...How could I ever root for my team to lose....but now I see the ERROR of my flawed thinking last year...

I wanted 11-5 and a play-off run....but ONCE you realize that's not possible.....you have to be a TRUE FAN....and hope you're team gets the BEST DRAFT POSITION available.....and thats ALL we have left.....it's ALL we had left after we LOST our 6th game so EARLY in the season.....

Lose the rest of the games...and PRAY that its enough to get IRELAND to FIRE HIMSELF....

Correction
Thanks Parcells and Ireland for nothing

Drafting position is over rated, especially when you have picks to wheel and deal.

Spin it how you want, you play to win the game, every game. Otherwise, there is just no integrity to the sport Unfortunately there is no more integrity left in this game, and it's become nothing but fodder for the advertising industry, and nothing more.

What all this go back to is draft day. Ireland is a Baylor alumni and still didnt see need to trade the house for RG3. But uses the 8th overall pick on ab with only 18 games of starting qb experience.

Not that I dont think Tannehill pays future dividends. He comes into thje league a year and half behind Luck and RG3. Then to make matters worse, Ireland dumps Marshall and he stuck with a crappy recievings corps.

Even with Marshall, Hartline still had emerged into that consistent deepthreat #2 we all hoped he would be. Then to make matters worse, Gates could never really see the playing field, develop, and eventually was cut.

Leave it to Ireland, the only gm in the leagu that takes one step forward(finally after 5yrs drafts a qb 1st rd), and two steps backwards(trades Marshall, Gates gets cut, Hartline's more of a possession type #2 at best).

Cant believe anyone's who's a true fan would post draft position is overrated. We were a terrible team last year that managed to win our way past both Andrew Luck and RG3.

Not only would we have had either Luck or RG3, dont forget it may have also changed some of the other draftees we had this year too. Great possibility a better TE than Egnew may have been available too.

Worst case scenario, we would have been in position to trade that 1st or 2nd overall pick, got a slew of 1st rd'ers and still drafted Tannehill.

Philbin didn't want Marshall, or Gates, blame him.

There are really not many considerably better teams right now. SF, ATL, HOU, maybe Chi. The rest all fall into the same vat of not ready for prime time.

Mando.

Thanks For REPEATING what IRELAND said!

U Know The 1 Person That has a Say On Signing Long! Philbin Does To. But This is Ireland's Pride and Joy!! Thank God Some of U "Fans" Don't Have The Job Of Running The team!!

Jake Won't be Going Anywhere.

AND DASHI LOVES TO SEE HOW BLIND U HATERS ARE!!

Martin Was Getting Man Handled A Heck Of A Lot Worst Than Long!! Yet! NOBODY SAYS ANYTHING!! How Obscenely Insane Some Of U are! It's like the 2 Throws To Hartline! The First One If Hartline Had REAL SPEED! He Catches It! The Second Was Under thrown! And It STILL Hit him in the GUT!! Yet it's the QB's Fault! Oh and The Last One! Dansby Played OK!! REALLY!!! Give it a Break Fools!

Again, Let's give Thanks To Jake! The Fins are Probably Going To Sign him For Fair Market Value!! Thanks Jake!

NE won, but they did not look impressive.

Wouldnt it just be too ironic, this how the Matt Ryan/Jake Long debate finally ends? It would no longer be a debate, just a public scalding of this Bp and Bp related era.

Jake Long's finally allowed to walk, and adding insult to in jury would be Matt Ryan winning his 1st sb championship ring this season.

Long is finished. Let him walk, fire ireland, let smith walk, let hartline walk, trade bess for anything you can get and draft a real qb.

Thanks to Ireland/Parcells, this has to be the only team in nfl history that consistently comes into new season with more holes than they had coming into the new season.

Just amazing how we always seem to take 1 step forwards and two steps backwards so consistently weel every year Parcells/Ireland has been in control.

Not only would we have had either Luck or RG3, dont forget it may have also changed some of the other draftees we had this year too. Great possibility a better TE than Egnew may have been available too.

Every time you watch the Colts play their rookie 3rd round T.E. Allen is making a play. Today he made a HUGE catch on the final drive that helps them win at the wistle while we sit here online talking about Egnew being like Jimmy Graham who didn't play till week 10 his rookie year.

The BIG difference being that Graham really needed the work given he only played one year of organized Football while on a Basketball scholarship at the U. You then look at Egnew and he's been playing the game since High School and was a 2 year College starter, if he can't get on the field at this point then there really isn't any excuses anymore at least C.Gates was another one of those College Basketball guys in Div-1AA which gave you hope, I have none in Egnew.

Nah, YG.

Ironic. Would be the Fins allow Long To Walk! And He Signs With Atlanta!!

U Know The Insanity That Would Go On Here!! And Those of U Saying any LT will Do! Will get Ur Well Deserved!!

But Ireland Won't Let That Happen.

Meant we always have less holes to fill coming into the offseason. Than we have once the new season begins. Ireland thinks the objective is to create more holes than you had when the prior season ended.

I think Ireland has a 25yr rebuilding plan.

dashi,

I would be rotflmaos is Long were allowed to walk and signed with the Falcons. That would mean the dirty birds stole both our 1st overall picks. LOL...

Marshall has 1017 yards and 8 TDs. Why did we get rid of this guy? He would have helped with t-hill's development.

As for Long, this is a great opportunity to see what we have with Martin at LT. Use the savings from Long to get two players, a wide receiver and a safety to replace Clemons.

Dashi....

There ar 31 OTHER teams that don't have a JAKE LONG playing for them...and 16 of them make the PLAYOFFS....and many of those 16 MULTIPLE YEARS IN A ROW.....

I think we'll be OK....

Im almost ready to have Matt Millen come in and replace Jeff Ireland. At least Millen will spend every 1st rd pick at wr until he gets a Calvin Johnson. LOL

Wasn't it YG raving about Stanzi? He can't even get on the field being on the team with the worst QB situation in the league.

I'm not sure YG is the guy that should be pointing out where JI has failed.

Orlandodolphin,

You forget one very huge thing. No fa that's a real baller wants to come here and play for Ireland. The only ones who would probably sign here are those looking for a big payday and to spend the season on vacation.

Fin4life,

Did Graham have To Beat out 2 Legit NFL TE's His First Year?

The Colts Picked The 2 Best Te's In the Draft! Before Egnew. Again, Egnew is not playing This Year! Because he has to beat Fasano for Playing Time! And That didn't Happen. Plain and Simple.

Same as Gronk! The Pats HAD NO TE'S ON THE ROSTER WHEN THEY DRAFTED HIM!

EGNEW HAS TO BE More Complete than Fasano for Playing Time! And That hasn't happened This Year!

The true Test if Egnew is Developing is if The Fins Don't Go after a FA or Draft 1 High Next Year!! But if the Fins Go into the Draft with Only Egnew and Clay! The Fins Might have something! But If They are Drafting one with a 2nd Round Pick! And trying To Sign Finley! The Fins have a Issue!! Til Then! Egnew is Developing! Nothing More Nothing Less!

Record,

YG isnt the problem this team sucks. YG drafted not one player, signed not 1 fa, and not the reason youre so cowardly you have to hide behind troll screen names either.

For the "RECORD". These are "FACTS".

Thx for stopping by stupid.

We can still get the last playoff spot but we have to win the last four. I hate to see our superbowl caliber defense go to waste like this. All they have to do is let Matt Moore finish out the season; then we can get that last spot. Tannehill is not ready. If he had not over threw a wide open Hartline, that would have changed the outcome of that game. If the dolphins had kept doing what they did in the first half, they could have pulled out that game. Tannehill stopped running the ball; this cause the defense to go back to the same defense they used in the first quarter. This is shameful.

Kris,

That is One Of The Most Asinine statements ever. And U guys keep repeating it Over and Over.

YG I agree. We will probably have to over spend to bring players here.

If we can get Long back here for 7-8 million a year then I would keep him but no way do I pay 15 million for big Jake.

AND DASHI LOVES TO SEE HOW BLIND U HATERS ARE!!

We agree most of the time but not on this one not even a little. First you posted back at me last week after I left if I had seen Long blocking downfield for Bush on the 22 yard TD run. I was going to answer the next day when I noticed that on the Coaches interview Philbin made mention of the fact that it was Pouncey who pulled out on that toss sweep clearing out the traffic. The only thing Long did was pick Reggie up in the endzone to do his best cheerleader.

You must understand that fin4life records all games on his U-Verse then goes back and watches again before erasing because it would be illegal to keep so no player escapes me on any given play. Second if you watched today's game which I have been skipping through already you would notice really only 2 breakdowns in technique by Martin which is about the average for Jake during the year and in some games that's being kind.

You want to committ over 10 Mil. a year on a player breaking down and beginning to dangerously remind of Tony Bosselli and I'm not on board especially when moving him could have landed Luke Joekel in next Seasons draft! At this point I doubt we could move him for anything better than a 4th unless you could resign him with some sort of out clause in his deal but then why would he sign such a deal if he could go anywhere he wanted in FA!!

Did Graham have To Beat out 2 Legit NFL TE's His First Year?

------------------------------------------

LOL @ Dashi.....

Who are these 2 LEGIT TEs you speak of......lol.....

Yesterday's Gone 4Ever!

You have had now many screen names now? Not as many as the number of times you've flip flopped, but still.

Long gets injured every year. We're out of the hunt now, he should be put on IR. Dansby too. As good as Jake Long is he's constantly injured and putting big money into him is a major risk. It would be a bitter pill to let him walk though, even if Martin is the planned replacement for Long, They may ranchise him and see if he can get through a season healthy before offering long term dollars. I'd tag him to trade him, I feel he's a depreciating asset.

lol.....

no wonder you make up so many names and talk to yourself....him is lonely....loll...friends on a blog.....hahahahahahahah......

Matt Ryan is just a decent QB. Tannehill has more potential than Ryan ever had..

Jake long is done! Glad we don't have to worry about signing him. Use his money sign Mike Wallace and Goldson the S from 49ers move Reshod to FS and cut Clemmons

As long as you have people drafting that pass on Earl Thomas and Dez Bryant in favor of Jarid "Who?" Odrick, this team is going nowhere.

Kris,

You already confirmed a week back your maturity level is around 3 yo, no need to keep advertising that.

kris,

Ignore the jerk troll. Probably the same one trying to attack me calling itself Record. The troll's trying to run every one of the blog so he can talk to himself using multiple aliases.

Dashi | December 02, 2012 at 06:49 PM

Listen the 2010 Saints were defending Super Bowl Champs in 2010 when they drafted J.Graham. They had Jeremy Shockey and Dave Thomas at T.E. and both played real well in that scheme. J.Graham was a one Season wonder at UM and I know you know given your a Canes fan as well as I am.

The Pats made a move on Gronk but had Ben Watson and Daniel Graham on the roster before parting with both when Hernandez fell ion their lap after we inexplicably passed on him for situational pass D LB AJ Edds.

In other words

lol....

plasma (latest name).....need a friend....

then GO OUTSIDE.....lol......

Ron are you smoking crack in NC? Ryan is a top 7 QB and have his team at the top of his division. Parcells clearly fuked up choosing a LT over the best QB in the draft. Since when is having a LT more important than a QB. Parcells was the worst thing to happen to this franchise ever!

YG.....AGREE.....

last one.....

TROLL.....need a FRIEND.....get a puppy.....

i'm done....

Clue,

Do you really believe Mike Wallace would come here and play for Jeff Ireland? I dont. Remember Ryan Clark? He jerked Ireland's chain just to raise his value with Pittsburgh.

We are not bad. Let Martin play LT the rest of the year it might be time for long to play RT for less money. add a WR that can get deep and make people miss on reverses and a DB that can cover the slot. We also need some attitude and pride NE punched us in the mouth on that last drive when it counted most.

Most great black players in this league believe Ireland is a racist. Forget about any of them coming here in fa. Only the black fa players that really dont have anywhere else to go will come here.

In other words

fin4life | December 02, 2012 at 07:06 PM

I accidentally cut myself off but I meant to say that Graham was a luxury pick for a stacked team. A brilliant pick which made Shockey expendable but a luxury for them. We took J.Jerry instead but at least he's still on the team the whopper was passing on Hernandez making Bellicik's day!

fin4life(from the last blog),

Let's stop and think for a second. What's the trade market for a LT, coming off an injured season, making $12.5 mil a year, who'll be a FA at the end of this year and would cost about $15 mil to franchise. Not much I would say.
On top of all that, what's the logic in drafting your supposed franchise QB and then getting rid of the LT at the same time. Doesn't make sense. Now we're looking to replace the RT AND the LT. Sorry just not thinking this makes any sense.
