Talked to Reshad Jones in the lockerroom today. We all know he is not a Pro Bowl pick this year. But he tells me that despite his breakout season he is not an alternate, either.
Wide receiver Brian Hartline, who eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career, tells me he is an alternate at the position.
Punter Bradon Fields is also an alternate at punter.
Of all these, Hartline has the greatest opportunity to play in the game because players such as New England's Wes Welker or Houston's Andre Johnson might not be able to play because their teams might be in the Super Bowl.
Fields has little chance of playing unless Dustin Colquitt, who made the team for the first time, somehow injures himself this weekend. Otherwise, Colquitt is not going to pass on the trip to Hawaii.
[Update: Mike Pouncey, Reggie Bush, Paul Soliai and Randy Starks are also alternates.]

haha, funny on Colquitt.
Congrats to hartline, Jones got the shaft. I know we have a good one there.
And WHDP, that Hester contract is awful. I think he's the 4th WR on the depth chart if not lower and the returns have disappeared since they decided to make him a WR and used up a lot of his energy there.
That's a lesson in not overpaying right there ... problem is that guy was special at what he did. There's no set market for an off the charts return man.

Hartline has 1 TD. Huh?
Posted by: mike | December 27, 2012 at 02:50 PM
Top priorities this off season:
1. Sean Smith. Similar to WR you cannot create a new hole in an already weak position. We need to draft a CB with one of our top 3 picks to add to Smith.
2. Brian Hartline. Same as #1.
I think that we can let both Long and Starks walk. Both will command top dollar. In Starks' situation Odrick can fill his spot. However, losing starks would mean that a DL will be top priority in the draft(there are some good ones in ths darft). Martin will be even better next year and he has already filled in well for Long.
Hartline a pro bowl alternate. Than validates how much we need to resign Hartlne.

Mark, Jones did get the shaft. What a year he's had...Nice to see some of these guys getting better...Jones, Misi, Hartline, Pouncey, Odrick...This offseason is going to be HUGE...We need to add playmakers...FS, WR, CB and TE...We also need to upgrade the RG position and another pass rusher wouldn't hurt either...
Posted by: #1 Dolphin Fan in Montreal | December 27, 2012 at 02:55 PM
Hartline got in because of YAC, and he deserves it.
On the slant patterns = batted balls Mark, Tannehill needs to learn to look away the defenders, and the oline on the side of the pass MUST cut (not just block) the oncoming defender. Or get their hands on the guy to get his hands down. WCO teams do this play all the time, and it works. But it must be executed correctly. Should work in the future (if the coaches are teaching their system well).
Posted by: DC Dolfan | December 27, 2012 at 02:57 PM
I'm not sure if Jeff Ireland is excited about Hartline making the Pro-Bowl as an alternate...On one hand, he drafted the guy but on the other--he's about to hit FA & we need to add & not subtract at WR.
Posted by: We Have Draft Picks | December 27, 2012 at 02:58 PM
Wait a second, Pouncey didn't get named??? That's even a bigger travesty than Jones not getting a nod.
Posted by: Mark in Toronto | December 27, 2012 at 03:00 PM
WHDP, exactly. His price just went up a few mil because of that.
Posted by: DC Dolfan | December 27, 2012 at 03:03 PM
"Wait a second, Pouncey didn't get named??? That's even a bigger travesty than Jones not getting a nod."
Mark,
Agreed. Anyone else find it amazing that the Pouncey brothers are probably the two best Centers on the planet??? Before Mike was drafted there were lots of people saying that Mike wouldn't be the player that Maurkice was BUT both guys were great right away.
Say what you want about our GM but Ireland nailed that pick. Now he needs to nail a couple of guys with those first five picks & for Tannehill to have a monster off season.
Posted by: We Have Draft Picks | December 27, 2012 at 03:05 PM
I've never seen a team with so few pro bowlers.
Posted by: Jay | December 27, 2012 at 03:06 PM
Bleacher report ranks Pouncey #11 at his position. Thats not pro bowl.
Posted by: Shula 73 | December 27, 2012 at 03:09 PM
"WHDP, exactly. His price just went up a few mil because of that."
DC,
As ridiculous as that sounds it's probably true.
His agent probably just sent Ireland an email saying that there will be no 'hometown discounts' for Hartline. If he winds up on the the Patriots I'm going to be f#cking pissed!!!
Posted by: We Have Draft Picks | December 27, 2012 at 03:10 PM
The 2 and 13 Chiefs team has 4 pro bowlers and the soon to be 7 and 9 Dolphins have 1 not including the alternate. SMH this should tell you the Pro Bowl is a sham.
Posted by: Clue | December 27, 2012 at 03:12 PM
It isn't about the pro bowl. It is about the Super Bowl. After that who cares? Congrats to Hartline, Wake and Fields. Go Phins in 13
Posted by: klndry | December 27, 2012 at 03:12 PM
Well!, that's much better.

Shula,
You're an idiot & the Bleacher Report can suck my b#lls.

WHDP, LOL!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: #1 Dolphin Fan in Montreal | December 27, 2012 at 03:14 PM
WHDPs/Mark,
I agree with you. Pouncey may be a bigger snub than Jones. And yes, Ireland did nail that pick. A lot of fans complained about that pick but Pouncey is a star and I am glad Ireland took him.
Posted by: Orlando Dolphan | December 27, 2012 at 03:14 PM
I've never seen a team with so few pro bowlers.
Jay,
Obviously you haven't been a Dolphin fan for the last ten years...
Posted by: We Have Draft Picks | December 27, 2012 at 03:14 PM
I'm curious to see if the Jets are going to re-sign Dustin Keller...
Posted by: #1 Dolphin Fan in Montreal | December 27, 2012 at 03:18 PM
Chad Henne?? LOL!!!!
Posted by: #1 Dolphin Fan in Montreal | December 27, 2012 at 03:24 PM
DC, slant patterns, got to get that ball out quick. Aaron Rodgers is the best in the biz at it so Philbin should be able to show Tannehill some of the same.
Posted by: Mark in Toronto | December 27, 2012 at 03:25 PM
Jay,
go look at the Bills.. how many do they have?
Also, the chiefs that will finish with 2-3 wins have 5 probowlers..
Posted by: mattybfromNC | December 27, 2012 at 03:27 PM
Shula,
he was also ranked #1 for alot of the year too...
Posted by: mattybfromNC | December 27, 2012 at 03:27 PM
Poizen, we're getting 20 inches of snow today...I've already been outside twice with the snow blower...So I'd say Toronto..LOL!!!
Posted by: #1 Dolphin Fan in Montreal | December 27, 2012 at 03:28 PM
Chad Henne??? really?? Was this a pity vote or did the New England Patriot votes count five times as much as everyone else's???
Montreal, I don't see any way the Jets let Keller go but if they do, he should priority #1 on external free agents. More than Jennings or Finley or anyone else. That guy is always open.
Posted by: Mark in Toronto | December 27, 2012 at 03:28 PM
Poizen, if you want to have fun with the ladies, DEFINITELY MONTREAL. You'll also eat better there. Restaurants in Montreal kill ours and the ladies are so friendly. If the economy was better in Montreal, I would've moved years ago.
Posted by: Mark in Toronto | December 27, 2012 at 03:30 PM
Mark, my thoughts exactly...He's going to be a free agent...I would say NY will most likely re-sign him, but you never know...They're going to be in a salary cap mess this year...God he would look good in a Fins jersey...
Posted by: #1 Dolphin Fan in Montreal | December 27, 2012 at 03:31 PM
Ireland's nuggets:
Hartline 4th round (pro bowler)
Wake Canadian Football League (pro bowler)
Davon Bess undrafted free agent
Reshad Jones 5th round pick
Nate Garner 7th round draft pick
First round picks have also been excellent:
Ryan Tannehill (franchise QB)
Mike Pouncey (Top Center)
Jake Long (5 time pro bowler)
Jared Odrick (Solid DE taken late in first round)
Vontae Davis
Not bad for someone that is dumped on like he does.
Posted by: Orlando Dolphan | December 27, 2012 at 03:33 PM
Poizen, my father-in-law lived in Montreal for 15 years but had to move to Toronto 6 years ago because of his job...He's Argentinian, hates the cold...So he moved to Toronto, worked for a few years and retired...Never came back and I seriously doubt he ever will...LOL!!! Winters are for real here in Montreal..
Posted by: #1 Dolphin Fan in Montreal | December 27, 2012 at 03:37 PM
Orlando, I've been saying that since August or so. I think as tannehill improves, the ireland detractors will disappear. Ireland's future really does depend on that kid, fair or not.
Poizen, we got dumped on a bit too. Not to that extent, but got 5 or six inches. Montreal does have the harsher winters.
Montreal, yeah with Keller. You'd think they would do anything to retain him although I don't know how tight their hands are tied cap wise. From what I hear it's pretty messy.
Posted by: Mark in Toronto | December 27, 2012 at 03:37 PM
Awesome, lots of more deserving alternates named above in the update. Big Paul (well earned), Pouncey (don't know how he didn't make backup), Reggie, and Randy Starks.
Last year a few of our alternates made it in. lets see what happens this year.
Posted by: Mark in Toronto | December 27, 2012 at 03:39 PM
Vontae Davis was traded orlando...so i wouldnt go putting that pick in the excellent category..tannehill was good but far from excellent this year(he needs work) and no guarantee he is the future yet either...Odrick is just now playing with some potential but has struggled in his first year...Long, other than injuries he has declined and could be on the chopping block soon...Hartline has only one FRikkin TD, and six total in his career, far from praise worthy, bess was a nice pickup, and jones and wake were some of the very few choices Irefiend hit on...
But dont go crowning the man king of draft nuggets!!!!
Posted by: superPHIN | December 27, 2012 at 03:48 PM

Mark,
Agreed. He nailed the Pouncey pick but the Tannehill pick is the one that will ultimately define him. Henne & Pat White can be dropped outside Parcells' doorstep but he's all in on Tannehill.
Personally I give Ireland credit for having the b@lls to finally draft a QB that high. He could have gone the easier, safer route & taken Kuechly. Thought Ireland was going to fall in love & take Coples.

Pro bowl alternates = If the stars dont play, your in!!!
Posted by: superPHIN | December 27, 2012 at 03:59 PM
The Nets fired Avery Johnson??? That was fast...
Posted by: We Have Draft Picks | December 27, 2012 at 04:01 PM
superPhin, you use that handle but your last two posts crap all over the players. Really, you saying if the stars don't play you're in. Does that mean you don't think those guysa re good players that put in good effort for our team? Really man, get lost with your disrespect. That's cheap.
Those guys are stars and some of them are better than the guys ahead of them that got the nod. You really think Markice is any different than Mike for example? He just plays for the bigger profile team, that's all. And last I checked their team has as many wins as ours. And that guy from Houston couldn't hold Mike's jockstrap. This kind of posting infuriates me.
Posted by: Mark in Toronto | December 27, 2012 at 04:06 PM
WHDP, you don't find anyone saying they shoudl've deferred on taking a QB in the first round last year for this year anymore. It's clear that if Tannehill was in the draft, he'd be the first pick in this year's draft to Jax or KC.
It was the right pick, the smart pick, and the one that has the highest potential impact on the franchise. I loved the pick then, love it more now. Upwards and onwards, shall we???

mark im happy with thill but no he wouldnt be the number one pick, come on dude little reality here
Posted by: dusty bottoms | December 27, 2012 at 04:13 PM
There's about 4-5 QB's in the upcoming draft better then Tannehill. Same as last year's but Ross had a hard on for Tannehill.
Posted by: Vegas Mike | December 27, 2012 at 04:17 PM
Mark....Its not my fualt you like mediocre and choose to defend it, i simply state that those guys like hartline and bush have been inconsistant all year long and the PRO BOWL is a joke and when somebody is selected as alternate, it means very little as opposed to you really deserved it rather than your only here becuase that other guy couldnt be...whine and cry all you want, i really dont give a sh$t, its my opinion...LIVE WITH IT!!!
Posted by: superPHIN | December 27, 2012 at 04:19 PM
dusty, really - you don't think Tannehill is any better than Geno Smith or Mike Glennon who will be the 1st qbs off the board??? Come on man, that's a tough case to make.
And he's a better NFL prospect than anyone else on the board. I stand by what I said. I'm convinced he would be the #1 guy off the board in April - no doubt.
Posted by: Mark in Toronto | December 27, 2012 at 04:20 PM
Pro Bowl= Cam Wake
Pro Bowl alternates= Mike Pouncey, Reggie Bush, Paul Soliai, Randy Starks, Brian Hartline, Brandon Fields.
Pro Bowl oversight= Reshad Jones
Where are the guys who were complaining earlier this year that the Dolphins had no talent?
Posted by: billcale | December 27, 2012 at 04:22 PM
Vegas Mike, you clearly have that handle because youa re a resident and not because you make your profession handicapping sports.
SP, I don't have to live with anything. Your existence and opinions factor into nothing in life as it pertains to the Dolphins thankfully. The only opinions and decisions I have to live with as far as the Dolphins go are the ones the organizations makes. And for the last two years, I've been happy with the trend.

Problem is he hasn't gotten one elite level player (long before all the injuries) and he create holes on the team and have to re fill them in a 2-3 years.

Tannehill isnt top 3 in his rookie QB class. Is he any better then Chad Henne? We'll see.

Hahaha, what a jabroni ... useless child.

The team is plain garbage. A joke. 5th consecutive losing season next year. Bank on it.
Posted by: Our Draft Picks Are Useless | December 27, 2012 at 04:36 PM
Really mark??, did i say we didnt have any stars on this team, I dont think i did...We certianly dont have enough talent(Stars as u call them) on this team to push us out of the last 10 out of 11 years of playoff drought football....and that is what counts more than any PRO Bowl alternate BS you'd like to factor out!!!
Posted by: superPHIN | December 27, 2012 at 04:36 PM
Tannehill should be thanking his lucky stars he wasn't at A&M for another year.
They may have had to move him to WR again to make way for "Johnny Football" Manziel, the heisman winner.

The team would've made the playoffs with Moore at QB. The Dolphins have this nasty habit of always making the wrong decisions....
Posted by: Our Draft Picks Are Useless | December 27, 2012 at 04:44 PM
The same Moore that went 6-7 and only beat teams like the Bills and Jags.. not one winning team he beat and he had a WR that teams had to game plan for in Brandon Marshall..
