Improbable postseason charge would kill draft order status

The Dolphins are on two very interesting and divergent courses and, frankly, I'm torn about which is better.

On the one hand this team that is flawed and has lost more than it has won and doesn't have an offense that scores consistently is still not out of the playoff hunt. That's right, hard as it is to believ (even to them), the Dolphins are still mathematically alive for the postseason.

Now, various things have to happen, not the least of which is Miami has to win out and that includes a victory at New England where very few teams come away with a victory late in the season.

Beyond that, the Dolphins need help in geatting the right combination of losses from Cincinnati and Pittsburgh and others.

[The Bengals must lose their final two games at Pittsburgh and home against Baltimore. The Steelers must win at home against Cincy and lose at home to Cleveland. And the Jets have to lose again.]

It is so improbable even players are talking about this season as one in which the team didn't accomplish its goal of making the playoffs.

"We didn't do enough," linebacker Karlos Dansby said Tuesday in speaking to the Miami Dolphins Touchdown Club.

And against this possible but improbable circumstance we have the NFL draft order.

You see, with every victory they add in this season that will likely end at New England, the Dolphins sink in the draft order. Last week the FIns were slated for the No. 11 overall pick in the first round. Then they beat the Jaguars and now Miami is slated for the No. 13 overall selection in the first round.

Every bit of success hurts Miami's draft standing.

Do you see the irony?

Win and you might draw closer to a playoff berth that might happen but probably won't. But if the team does win, the cost is a superior draft standing, which obviously hurts the chances of picking an elite player.

Dolphins fans should be particularly sensitive to this situation because many last year advocated a "Suck for Luck" mentality that entailed rooting for the team to lose so that it could get an elite quarterback such as Andrew Luck.

Turns out the Dolphins had too much success late in the season after starting out 0-7 and wound up with the eighth overall selection.

On the other hand, the Dolphins haven't tasted the playoffs since 2008. So perhaps some of you are more than willing to sacrifice the chance to have a Top 10 draft pick in exchange for the possibility -- however slight -- that the team might get into the postseason.

Where do you stand?

Clue, I like Sean Smith but he wasn't as good as those two. Man, Sam Madison used to erase Marvin Harrison in his prime. It was a thing of beauty. Those guys never had safety support either. Single coverage all day and I hate Wannstedt for wasting that generation of talent that he had no hand in assembling.

And I said Madison was the first good corner of my time, Surtain came later. Both 2nd round picks. If only JJ could spot talent in the first round - we might've done something.

Odinseye had a good point,
When the ball is kicked off all posssible thoughts of hopeful losing goes out the window . a true fan only feels good when a dolphin makes a play, it's undeniable for me. So if we painfully lose ,then and only then ,can better draft position be a conciliation prize. And talent evaluation and some good fortune are the biggest factors with exception of 1 or 2 players every draft anyways as opposed to picking 8 or 15.

Best secondar in Dolphins history. Sam Madison Patrick Surtain Brock Marion Brian Walker

The problem with the secondary besides the fact is there not as talented as Madison and Surtain is they lack confidence. Ive yet to see where our corner breaks on a route to intercept a pass. Madision and Surtain use to do it all the time. The only time this secondary gets interceptions is when the ball is thrown str8 to them and even then there are a lot of drops.

Im sick of seeing SS watch the guy catch the ball then pushes him out of bounds. Dolphins shouls consider brining ing Surtain or Madsion as coaches for the secondary to show them the art of playing corner in the NFL.

Dashi....

Are The Fins Using The IR? As A Way To Put More Players On The Roster? (Not bad)

D.Thomas Down!!

Expect To See More Of L.Miller These Next 2 Weeks!! Hopefully, We get to see Egnew Also!!

Egnew couldnt catch a cold in pre season games and you guys expect him to light it up in regular season games?

Mark,

Madison was A great CB!!

He was Better Than Surtain!! Madison Can Shut Wr's Down!! Plus He Use To Catch His INT's!! Surtain was Good, Madison was Better!! The Fins Didn't Have To Worry About #1 or #2!! 1 Guy Played The Left Side!! The Other Played The Right Side!! Plus Having Marion At FS!! Made The Secondary Dominant!!

That Would Be Another Jersey I Would Love To Add To The Collection!! #29 S.Madison Jersey!!

Eggnew = Another Irescum bust

"We didn't do enough," linebacker Karlos Dansby said Tuesday in speaking to the Miami Dolphins Touchdown Club.

I hope he includes himself in that statement. Other than making a big open field tackle on a 3rd down that stopped a drive (not sure if it was last week or the week before) I don't recall him making too many impact plays.

If you're not a part of the solution then you're a part of the problem. F#ck him.

WHDP, Dansby just isnt the playmaker he was in Arizona, not sure what it is but the amount of money he's making he's def not worth it.

And I said Madison was the first good corner of my time, Surtain came later. Both 2nd round picks. If only JJ could spot talent in the first round - we might've done something.

Mark,

A running back would have helped...

I got THREE bloggers banned last week...AND I'll get another THREE banned this week.

Beware...all you CLOWNS, TROLLS and TROLL FEEDERS!

Kris, how do you get "trolls" banned?

As far as draft order, we'll need to lose the final 2 gms, just to crack top 10. 6-10 got us 8th overall last season.

If, and that's a HUGE if, we crack top 10 and T'eo isnt available we need to trade down to pick upan extra "PREMIUM" pick anyway. I have no problem picking in the mid t late teens in the draft. Players will be available with huge upside at a great value.

Its only a matter of will Jeff Ireland select the eight one.

Idiot Saban dumped both Surtain and Madison for Terry Daniels and Jason Allen. lol

"WHDP, Dansby just isnt the playmaker he was in Arizona, not sure what it is but the amount of money he's making he's def not worth it."

Clue,
He played very well in his first season in Miami & I was excited we got him. The problem with Dansby was that he used to be excellent in pass coverage but he started to slip last year & this year it's been worse. With TE's getting faster & more athletic you need LB's who can cover. It's unbelievable watching Willis & Bowman in pass coverage. Probably the two best ILB's in football & they're both on the same team!!!

Still, I think Buffalo lays down as they usually do late in a season, and we lose to the Pats to finish 7-9. That should have us at around 13th-14th in draft order.

Thats still good positioning, to either use the pick right there, or trade down further and grab an extra 3rd rd pick. I especially like this strategy if we're going to draft a wr with the 1st rd pick. WR position is at least 2 rds deep, imo.

"Idiot Saban dumped both Surtain and Madison for Terry Daniels and Jason Allen. lol"

First of all his name was Travis Daniels & Surtain was traded for a 2nd round pick to KC. In Saban's defense he also signed Andre Goodman & Will Allen who were both MUCH better than Sean Smith or anyone else we have.

Jason Allen was a disastrous first round pick for us.

@12:00!

Does anyone else think Odrick is a bust? The guy doesnt do anything great for a first rounder.

BTW Daniel Thomas is offically lost for the season with a kneee injury. Ireland gave up 3 draft picks for this guys and he sucks balls. Steven Jackson will be a FA, not sure what he got left

TG,

I don't know why but I just don't see us taking a WR in the first round. I think we'll wind up letting Starks & McDaniel hit FA & we'll draft a DT if we pick in the middle of the first round. If we trade down I think we'll take the TE from Stanford or the TE from Notre Dame.

WHDP, it's because Dansby let himself get fat last year. And once you get fat, you lose your burst. Even if you lose the weight, it's never the same. One thing to gain ten pounds in teh offseason, but he gained 40. Just ruined him.

WHDP,

Dansby was signed at the high fa contract for basically 2 reasons:

1. We werent getting anything out of Crowder as far as an impact up the middle blitzer. Dansby did a decent job of this at Arizona.

2. Crowder sucked in coverage and dropped ints that landed right in his mitts. Dansby's still better in coverage, but, is now also dropping ints right in his mitts. He wasnt dropping them in AZ.

Yes, Dansby has been above average as a run stopper and coverage lb. But he isnt delivering sacks as we hoped. Nor the picks that we hoped.

Basically, Dansby hasnt been a bust, but he sure hasnt delivered as we hoped he would do neither.

No doubt we'd be much better off with Dez Bryant then Odick.

3 picks for D Thomas was MORONIC!!!!!!!!!!! Irescum should be fired for that alone!!!!!!

WHDP,

If taking a DT 1st rd, an even stronger case for trading back and picking up an extra 2nd rd'er would exist.

I can live with taking a DT 1st rd if we traded back to at least the 25th position, picking up an extra 2nd.

Thomas & Clay done for the season with knee injuries. Clay tore a ligament but the severity of Thomas' injury is not known.

Thanks cpt obvious, wed be better had Drew Brees passed his physical with the Fins, or if we drafted Gronk but he didnt and we didnt so why talk about if we did this or that?

Posted by: Ron Son | December 19, 2012 at 12:44 PM

Ron Son,

Look at this way. What Ireland would have done with those picks even had he not selected Thomas, may have been just as MORONIC.

At least this way he shot the entire moronic load in a single wad.

Are you guys kidding me?? You want to draft a defensive player in the first round. The offense needs all the help it can posssibly get forget about defensive in the first 3 rounds we need offensive playmakers as first priority

YG,

I know why he was signed & I loved the signing at the time. I never said he was a 'bust' or anything even close to that but you don't pay LB's the kind of money he makes UNLESS he is a flat-out playmaker/difference maker which he has not been for the last two seasons.

If taking a DT 1st rd, an even stronger case for trading back and picking up an extra 2nd rd'er would exist.

I can live with taking a DT 1st rd if we traded back to at least the 25th position, picking up an extra 2nd.

YG,

I know we need a LOT of things on both sides of the ball BUT if we can trade back I'd be extremely pissed if we didn't take one of these top tier TE's. Fasano is probably gone, Clay just tore a ligament, & Egnew is brain dead.

clue, ire will go dl again.

Matty if you want to tell us what we can or cant talk about maybe you should get your own blog. The rules here state no subject is taboo. Get that?

YG, lol

I will always root for the Dolphins to win, no matter what the circumstance. When it is all said and done, the draft choice is the silver lining that comes from too many defeats.

If Tannehill can get just a little taste of the playoffs after going on a December winning streak, that, too me, would be invaluable to his development. In the end you have to use the draft to your advantage, wherever your picks lie.

Interestingly, if Miami did make the playoffs, their opponent would almost certainly be the Patriots. How crazy would that be , back to back games in Foxborough?

Jay,
I asked why kid so read my question and post if youre going to respond to me. Get that? That was directed to Ron Son but thats sweet youre taking up for him.

Why not answer my question instead of trying to act like an internet tough guy trying to put me in my place?

So again ill ask whats the point of talking about the past and what could have been?

The Fins need to play to win.

But they need to continue to play their young talent to see how they handle game time realities. If they play their young talent and they win...all the better.

The reality is they are not likely to win in New England. They may win in Buffalo but will have to play much better than their first game against the Bills.

Another reality is that Free Agency comes before the draft and it could have a big impact on the Fins this year.

Finally, the team can't control the wins and losses of other teams, which will also impact draft order.

So, you can't sink the last two games with intention of improving your draft status. There are too many other realities that will drive their ultimate ability to impact next season's roster.

But the opportunity to beat two divisional rivals and POTENTIALLY get to the playoffs is going to have me routing for the Fins the next two weeks. Wouldn't miss it!!

If we had a capable GM or a productive scouting staff, I would be concerned about messing up the draft-order.

But since we have neither, what the hey!.............Just Win Baby!!

Odrick may not be spectacular but he is VERY solid, would start for a majority of teams, and (by the way) is still only 23-years-old and improving.

To call him a bust is ludicrous, but I expect such 'expert ANALysis' from some of the nitwits here.

didn't brees sign w/ the saints 2 days later.?????.
.
saban is, and always will b a f'ing liar.

RG Mike Vick III is the 2nd best rookie QB on his team.

You are correct 2 watt..lol

You guys are nuts to think Ireland will draft a defensive player in the first round, we need someone who can score TD's. Dont sleep on the 2 RB's from Alabama. Lacey and Yellostone(or Whatever)

WHDP,

We have a 1st, two 2nds, and two 3rd rd picks. Trading back gives us a 1st, three 2nds, and at least two 3rd picks.

That's 4 definite new starters and "perhaps 5" if one of the 3rd rd'ers can crack the starting lineup. This can definitely happen if Ireland doesnt gamble with any of these picks.

The two 3rd rd picks should be bpa regardless of position.

Are you guys kidding me?? You want to draft a defensive player in the first round. The offense needs all the help it can posssibly get forget about defensive in the first 3 rounds we need offensive playmakers as first priority

Clue,

What I really want is for us to re-sign Hartline, step up & sign Mike Wallace or even Greg Jennings in FA & them draft either the TE from Stanford of the TE from Notre Dame but it's Jeff Ireland remember???

My guess is that he does none of these things & this offense will be even worse off next year w/o Bush & Fasano. He hasn't gotten the job done at RB, WR, or TE in five years so why would I expect him to get it right now...I believe he will f#ck up this FA from the start by signing Long & Smith to big contracts which neither player has earned.

It doesn't matter where the Dolphins draft. They will blow it like they do every year.

I'm With The Consensus!!

Our Best Move Right Now!! Is To Trade Back!! Pick Up A Extra 2nd! And Have 4 Picks In The Top 50!!

Somebody has been Saying to Do This Since The PreSeason!! Forgot If It's YG or DC!!But One Of You Guys Had The Right Plan All Along!!

It was Something About Trading Back To Pick Up A OT!! and Still Have 3 Picks!!

I Just Wouldn't Spend The Pick On A OT!! I Believe The Fins Sign Long!! Trade Back!! And Waste The 4 Picks In The Top 50 on Needs!! Wr's, CB, FS!! LEAVING THE 3rd Round To Address MLB and TE!!

YG,

Nothing is definite in the draft. NOTHING!!! At best it's a crap shoot.

Odick Avg's 1.71 tackles a game.
Uh HUH. He is 1st rd. material.
LMAO. morons.

It doesn't matter where the Dolphins draft. They will blow it like they do every year.

Flex,

Good point. This is my concern as well b/c Ireland & his staff are still going to be making the decisions.

Best case scenario--Philbin & Sherman lock Ireland out of the war room & make the picks.

We *should* be 8-6 GOD DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dashi....way to toe the TROLL LINE.....

"were just mad"....lol....you can't POSSIBLY KNOW that....and I will neither confirm or DENY it for you....just ask the GOOD DOCTOR to INTERNET diagnose US......since you are quoting a NON PERSON now....and going to a INTERNET PERSON (ONE OF MANY) for PROFESSIONAL ADVICE.....

When I say CLOWN....I MEAN you're ACTING LIKE A CLOWN....no play on words.....I say what I mean...and I mean what I say....

I don't waste time talking to MADE UP personas.....why should I....there are PLENTY of REAL/QUALITY posters to converse with....I am not so DESPERATE for conversation that I need to beg KNOWN TROLLS for conversation.....I have REAL PEOPLE around me 24-7 for that....talking "gun control" on a FOOTBALL BLOG".....GEESH,,,,get a friend".....an ACQUAINTANCE.....do some charity work...or join a GYM......all will give you GREAT opportunities to meet REAL PEOPLE......and have a real life.....just don't talk in 3rd person when doing any of the activities.....you already come of as a CLOWN on this blog....no need to REPEAT that performance in real life....

and Dashi....you can't "hold a grudge"....against a fake persona....lol....no more than you can hold an actual conversation with one.....just thought you might need to know that....and for things to be PERSONAL....IT HAS TO INVOLVE A PERSON.....you get that right....EARTH TO DASHI......

Not gonna speak on JESUS comparison......religion is for the brain-washed masses....which clearly you are demonstrating yourself to be.....Is it a wonder that you attempt to QUOTE JESUS and OSCAR in the same POST....you might be the MOST EASILY influenced person on the net.....

Don't take it personal Dashi.....but it seems that the gibberish that Oscar spits has you're mind in a blur....did Oscar blow you're mind.....Its clear he has enlightened you to some degree.....

Dashi....Its clear to me you are the very DEFINITION of SHEEPLE.......once we get that word in the DICTIONARY....say CHEESE...cause you're picture will be right next to it.....

but don't worry Dashi...I'M MAD.....or @ least you can tell yourself that if it makes you feel better....

Clue,

Dont walk the plank my man. Coyle already says he doesnt 100% trust moving Odrick to DT. To me, that was his signal to Ireland to resign Starks. WHDP's was merely stating his opinion of what could be a scenario if Starks isnt resigned.

However, imo, if Starks isnt resigned we would be looking more at drafting a DT with one of the 3rd rd picks. Solia is already one of the highest paid "DT's" in the league. So, adding a 1st rd pick to the position is still way too much money to have tie into the overall DT position.

Just like you said, "DT's dont score points". Also, add this theory to Jake Long not being resigned, and its unlikely we add both a d-line and oline as premium picks in this draft.

Given Sherman's A&M ties, that LT there could also be on the 1st rd shopping list if Long isnt resigned. Not saying it will happen. But, just saying.
