Changes afoot around the NFL, but not in Miami

In New York, there's speculation general manager Mike Tannenbaum will be demoted. In San Diego, both coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith reportedly will be gone after this season. In Cleveland, the future of general manager Tom Heckert Jr. is uncertain and rumors are swirling about a successor.

Carolina is in the market for a new general manager, Scott Pioli is on the hot seat as the general manager in Kansas City, and there could be other moves elsewhere.

Yup, it's that time of year.

But not in Miami. Probably not this year.

Despite the fact the team is likely headed to a fourth consecutive season out of the playoffs and perhaps a fourth consecutive losing season, I am told there has been zero discussion about replacing general manager Jeff Ireland. And obviously, head coach Joe Philbin isn't on the one-and-done road last traveled by Cam Cameron. He's not going anywhere, either.

So firings in Miami seem at this point unlikely.

Now, this comes with a caveat: The season is not over. All the data is not known with four games to play. And everyone will be ultimately evaluated by owner Stephen Ross once the season is over. So no decision is final at this point.

If the Dolphins collapse the next four Sundays or if quarterback Ryan Tannehill plays so poorly as to suggest drafting him was a major error, then all bets are off.

But the Dolphins are typically an easy team to read on such matters. If someone as high-ranking in the organization as Ireland were on the outs, the signs would be there by now. Last year, for example, it was clear coach Tony Sparano was on his way out only weeks into the regular season.

No such signs this year. Quite the opposite, actually. Last week, for example, Ireland spent the entire week grinding on tape with his scouts and other personnel people as they prepare for the coming Senior Bowl in January, Indianapolis Combine in February, and yes, NFL draft in April.

Ireland's relationship with Ross also remains strong. The men continue to speak almost on a weekly basis and some weeks more often than that. Same with coach Joe Philbin. By contrast, once Sparano fell out of favor with Ross, the two talked only occasionally.

Another reason there isn't a huge likelihood anyone will be fired is Ross is a strong believer in continuity. He is convinced an NFL team needs it to succeed. Ross, you'll remember, stayed with Sparano and Ireland once he took over ownership even though he had no allegiance to either man.

He kept both even after he was already displeased enough with Sparano that he met with Jim Harbaugh, now in San Francisco, when that coach wanted to make the jump to the NFL from Stanford University.

It was only after the Dolphins got off to an 0-7 start in 2011 and his relationship with Sparano rotted that Ross dismissed Sparano. And, it must be said, Ross kept Ireland at that time even though the general manager was very unpopular with the fan base.

Ross kept Ireland even though fans hired banner planes to fly over Sun Life asking for the general manager's firing. He kept Ireland after fans showed up at training camp to protest the general manager's offseason moves.

As someone in the organization told me recently, "Jeff survived that and other uncomfortable moments, what makes you think he'd be fired now?"

It would take an epic, disastrous final four weeks to make is a possibility. Otherwise, all quiet in Miami.

It would be harder to replace Ireland with someone better and much easier to replace him with someone worse.

Let Ireland be judged from the last draft and forward.

Great Post Mando! (Again, For The People Who Think This Is Mando's Approval of Ireland Learn To Comprehend What U read)

Dashi Will Like To Add The Reason Ireland Won't Get Fired!! Is Because!! Of All Those GM's Above!! Ireland Has Done a Better Job!! Overall!! Building This Roster!! Than They Had Building Theirs!!

For as Much As We The Fans!! Want To Continue Hating Ireland!! Put UR REALIST CAP ON!! IRELAND IS BETTER THAN MORE THAN HALF THE GM'S! IN THE LEAGUE!! AND HE FINALLY FOUND A COACH!! THAT CAN DEMAND BETTER OUT OF HIM!! A COACH THAT HAS A BETTER PROTOTYPE FOR THIS TEAM!! IN THE MODERN NFL!!

Again, Are The Panthers In The Position We Will be in This Offseason? How About The Jets? Or The Chargers?

ON TOP OF HAVING A HORRIBLE ROSTER!! THOSE TEAMS HAVE LIKE 2-3 Years Of Bad Contracts! Coming Up!! The Jets are Going Have To Spend $10 Million Just To Cut Sanchez!! Never mind The Other High Priced Players!!

The roster won't be so fortunate.

Dashi has the most annoying writing style. He tries to hard to impress himself.Chi

Few teams have been as TALENTED as the Chargers over the past 7 years....

that's your man right there....Its not his fault Norv sucks as a HC.....and Philip Rivers seems to have fallen of a cliff..

Hey!

LOOK at ME!

I can WRITE IN CAPS!!!!!

And.....also...............................

I can use EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do ya HEAR how COOL I AM?

YOU DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol @ dashi......

you can't POSSIBLY believe the things you write.....

Ireland has DRAFTED 2...I say again...2 players worthy of the PRO BOWL in 5 years....

thats show a CLEAR VOIID OF TALENT....

Other players and coaches think our players are CRAP....

2 PBs...in 5 years....

NEXT.....

Rivers decline reminds me of dannys. Legs are basically shot. Plus rivers never had a big arm and it looks like age has sapped some of his arm strength.a.j. Smith brings in players ill give him that.but is all of the losing on norv or a combo of him and the players? they have a history of falling apart when it counts. Tough decision when you look at smiths success rate.

Kristina,

Ireland has not been fully in charge of the draft for 5 years. Do you think Parcells was just wallpaper while here?

Dashi....

Put your're REALST cap on....then come to the REALIZATION that the GM doesn't work for the coach...he works for the OWNER....CHAIN-OF COMMAND.......

This snake swallowed his last coach whole....unlatched his jaw....and swallowed him up...and sh@t him out in order to save his own job....

How can ANYONE be so loyal to one who has no loyalty?????

This guys (Ireland) back-stabbing mentality is why we don't get the RIGHT kind of players....

How can you know a character guy....if you're NOT a character guy.....

Kris,

Be a fair judge. Ireland was sandwiched between Parcells and Sparano for 4 years. Not exactly what I'd call and optimum situation for a first time GM.

His last draft earned high marks. Let's see what he does next.

5 consecutive losing seasons? LOL

HOW CAN A POSTER WRITES LOVE LETTERS TO IRELAND ,THEN HE WRITES HE'S NOT CHARACTER GUY ???????????????????

Since joining Miami, Ireland has spent 14 draft picks on skill position players and has gotten zero playmakers out of those 14 picks.

Sammo....

I think you HAVE to take a look @ AJ Smith.......he drafts PRO-BOWLERS....players who then BREAK-THE-BANK when they hit the market......

He understands what type of player it takes to score points......

I just wonder if Smith would work with Philbin.....cause OBVIOUSLY his decision making when it comes to HCs....is questionable @ best....

many believe he ran 14-2 schottenhiemer out of SD....cause they couldn't get along....

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE TIRED OF THE LOSING! HELP MAKE THE CHANGE!

AJ Smith? LOL

He will be fired one day after the season ends for a reason. Wake up.

So it looks like we're stuck in 7-9 groundhogs day for the next few years if Ireland's staying. Pathetic franchise we have become where mediocre is good enough. Boycotting home games is the only way to get Ireland out the door.

HOW CAN A POSTER WRITES LOVE LETTERS TO IRELAND ,THEN HE WRITES HE'S NOT CHARACTER GUY ???????????????????

Go find where I WROTE the "love letters" LOCO...or STFU....

PASTE THEM here....we'll be waiting.....

If your just gonna LIE....then you add NOTHING to the conversation....

Ireland's racist reputation has alienated many FA's.

Hireland.....

sometimes its time to move on...a change of scenery....

but your right...NO REASON to fire Ireland one day after he competes his 4th losing season in a row,,,,

no reason @ all...

Kris,

No need to respond to my posts until after you learn how to read.

KRIS.........YOU WERE VERY HIGH ON THE DOLPHINS AND YOU ENDORSED OUR GARAGE MANAGER AND OUR CORN BEEF COACH AND YOU KEPT PRAISING THEM FOR MONTHS WHEN YOU PREDICTED 11-5 SEASON .......................

Kris,

What makes you think your opinion has any value?

KRIS,,,,,,,,,

I WISH YOUR BEAUTIFUL CHILD A HEALTHY LIFE AND WONDERFUL HAPPY DAYS AHEAD.............

I did say its tough due to his success. Just saying the players fall short and in the end they are the ones playing the game.i wouldnt be against bringing smith in. Like you said can he get along with philbin and can they merge their philosophies? All the picks and caproom we have next year has to be tempting to any soon to be out of work gm's.Maybe a.j. Makes a call to ross behind irelands back?

Mando, when you report that Ireland likely will not be fired it becomes very hard for me not to want to kill the messenger.

This is very bad news.

Aloco.....

I said...

and I quote....

"they will go 11-5 REGARDLESS of who plays QB".....

pay attention.....

"DUE TO THE WEAK SCHEDULE".......Next season....because of the HARDER competition they will fall back to earth...7-9 or 9-7 is to be EXPECTED".....

I have posted it 30 TIMES @ least....

can you read.....

or do you just stumble thru the words....and then see 11-5....and take it as the gospel.....

you can't possibly be this stupid.....

Please name me what playermaking Pro Bowl player Jeff Ireland has drafted?

Exactly.

Very depressing. Not attending a game until Ireland is fired.

PPHILBIN WILL NOT LIKE TO SEE OUR GARAGE MANAGER GET FIRED ,B/C HE TAKES ALL THE HEAT AND WHEN HE'N GONE ,ALL FAN HATE WILL GO TOWARD THE CORN BEEF COACH..

GIVE IRELAND A RAISE AND AN EXTENSION!!

Scotty=Clueless Based on what? Dont even bring up the Dez Bryant subject either... it was the topic of what Dez brought up...

FLPD he drafted the best center in football..

Ireland picked up 2 ol this offseason in free agency which one retired & the other is on ir. he picked up 3 free agent wr's and all have been cut. He drafted 2 wr & 1 te and between all 3 players only 1 is playing a part time role. Meanwhile the redskins draft a RB out of fau in the 6 round & he by himself is making more of an impact than all the players mentioned above that Ireland picked up. Now don't forget the redskins also drafted rg3 & picked Pierre Garson. Who's future looks brighter right now?

I wonder what it will be like when Henne beats Miami at Sun Life. All bets off?

The dolphins are equal to the Milwaukee bucks, completely irrelevant to the league they play in. Year after year same results and we keep rehashing same issues deep threat wr, dominant ol, and really game changers anywhere.

On a good day I can shoot a load right into my mouth.

mattybfromnc, that was Sparano that drafted Pouncey.

Fins worst team in franchise sports history. Worst fans too.

Anyone have any answers as to why any time we get a good player(Brandon Marshall)we never fully utilize him. And don't say qb because jay cutler is not anything special.

POOR KRIS POOR LITTLE BOY
CANT STAND THE TRUTHH

I dont get it......fans, media, etc are high and gushing when the Fins won a few games in a row (and barely lost the prior 2 in OT)--it was just 6 weeks ago folks--words like "progress", "promising", "young talent", "Irelands not so bad", "Philbin looks like a keeper", etc---positive comments from ESPN, Kiper even says he was wrong on Tanny, etc----now they've struggled recently (did beat the next team of the decade though, SEA, with legend and future HOFer Wilson at QB....I think we should just induct him to the HOF now, dont you think?--after 12 games--woulda said that about Newton last year, no?).....and now we're back to "we suck", "Ireland sucks", "Tannehill sucks", Philbin sucks"--"do we need to draft a new QB", "hire a new coach?", etc--you all gotta be kidding me (including you Armando).

KRIS COME ON COME CLEAN ON 11 AND 5
WE WIL FORGIVE YOUR IGNORINCE

Who here is tired of hearing that u can get big play wide outs in rounds 3-7, because besides Hartline look how well that has worked out for us.

Hi ALoco.

YOU CAN COME OUT FRM HIDING KRIS

The great thing about this news is that I will be able to post comments praising Jeff Ireland for at least another year.

Do any of you guys know if are scouts are newer or have been carried over from other coaching staffs?

Why is Ross so in love with Ireland.

this team will go as far as their QB takes them......and I'm not sure why you'd be writing Tannehill off already, at this point--opinions from columnists and commentators are consistently still positive......he's been up and down this year, pretty much as expected (except he wasnt even supposed to be starting yet, if Garrard hadnt gotten hurt)--yet so many fans are already sour on him--?

AJ Smith has nobody to blame but himself really, he fires Shottenhiemer for not winning the big one and hires a career assistant whose bombed everywhere as a H.C. To make matters worse his T.E. Gates is in serious decline and always hurt along with their RB R.Matthews and he has two geriatric former Fins as the primary back ups (Ronnie and R.McMicheal) The DB's ( led by Jammer and Walden) have aged and they gave they're best one Cromartie his walking papers in 09. The replacement for Steroids Merriman, Maybin was a bust and Phillips is old as well.

They let V.J. walk thinking clone Malcolm Floyd could take the #1 roll and that hasn't worked out some guys are just better as 2nd fiddle thinking Alvin Harper and Micheal Irvin here. There is no stat but would love to see just how many games S.T.'s have lost games in S.D. in the Norv era as well. The moment Phillips said he was the players Coach was the moment I would have canned him. I hate player Coaches their teams tend to be awfully undisciplined. Wannstedt was one as was Cocker and in Miami we got our fill as did Cowboys fan with player favorite Switzer who didn't even bother wearing a headset during games.

The Jets Tannenbaum was a ticking time bomb I am only to happy to see go off. He made his bed when he traded the 09 draft for Sanchez and now owes him 9 Mil guaranteed 2013. He then sealed his fate and built an old vet heavy win it all now team and fell flat with 80 Mil. tied up in 9 players next Yr. assuring a fire sale. Rex then does Miami proud and hires Parcells Brother in Law Sparano (maybe a Saint can't imagine a female from that family tree) to run the O almost guaranteeing he may as well be gone, as a Miami fan I couldn't have scripted it any better even the mascot Fireman quit. No worries Rex there will be an opening as D.C. in Philly next Yr.

Ireland has surely and steadily built a mediocre team and the rope is short if the bounty of picks and Lotto CAP space don't pay off in 2013. I do at least take comfort in the fact that we are not one of these geriatric teams CAPPED out or in need of a better H.C. like Carolina were the constant false starts and procedure calls fall on the H.C. They however could hire from within because I feel that O.C. Chudzinski (UM T.E. in JJ era) is a sharp mind and we will see what he learned having had his entire College career playing under notorious whip cracker JJ.

Ireland has to be working for the Jests.

If I were GM I would handle this wr mess by trying to sign one of the following Greg Jennings, Dwayne Bowe, or Mike Wallace. Then regarding this draft if we can't address de or cb(damarcus milliner, barkevious mingo, or Sam Montgomery then I would trade out of first round completely and pick up first and change next year so we then could move up and pick marquise lee depending on his season next year.

fin4life, we wish Ireland built a mediocre team. His team is worse then dog poop.

I mean 6-10 is NOT mediocre. Neither is 5-7.

This draft by the way looks like a weak draft class.

Ross will be buying boatloads of his own tickets until he fires Ireland.

dumfins--your post above is on target, sign a good WR in free agency......and the draft class has to give us a starting CB and pass rusher, which could/should happen in the first 2-3 rounds (enough talent there, at those positions)--and fill in from there.....weak class or not (who knows), that all is (should be) very do-able.
