Dolphins do Trusnik extension, in great 2013 cap situation

It's not about this year anymore, as you know. It's about next year, and particularly next offseason for the Dolphins. And the team has been preparing for that mega-offseason in which it will have five picks in the first 100 picks of the NFL draft and approximately $46,840,000 million in salary cap space, assuming certain things happen.

First of all, the club has done only one contract extension this season. Jason Trusnik last month quietly signed a two-year extension on his original two year deal signed in 2011. That means Trusnik is signed through 2014 now. The extension is worth $2.17 million. It included a $600,000 bonus with base salaries of $715,000 in 2013 and $855,000 in 2014. Trusnik is making $700,000 this season.

It is the only contract extension the Dolphins did during this season. And it adds Trusnik to the list of players under contract to the team in 2013. Those players represent $75,060,751 in salary cap space already taken up for 2013.

Now, the salary cap has been estimated by various sources, including NFL.com, to come in at approximately $121 million for 2013.

So how much cap space will the Dolphins have?

Well, you have to add approximately $1.6 million in dead money to the Dolphins total to bring it to $76,660,751. That tells you the Dolphins will have $44,340,000 for next year.

But there are other machinations.

The club will sign perhaps 7-9 players to future contracts within days after the season. That will take up approximately $2.5-$3.3 million of space. So we're down to around $41,840,000 of available cap space for 2013. The team also has approximately $5 in unused cap space from this year. It can elect to carry over that cap space and use it next year (as most teams do) or not.

If the Dolphins carry over their space -- and I stress that most teams do -- they'd be at approximately $46,840,000 in available salary cap space for next season -- give or take $1 million. Use that as the working figure for available cap space in 2013 as the Dolphins enter free agency.

Free agency, you must remember, will include the 15 or so players Miami has unsigned.

S Smith wont be out......CBs are obviously extremely valuable (as we found out, and then some, this year) and make alot of money--4-5 mill for a solid starting level CB is going rate/not alot, and thats what Marshall and Patterson are--and yes, one of them could/should be a nickel but nickels play alot these days and are also valuable (and often cover quick RBs and TEs......ie. your nickel has to be pretty good)--so Smith at higher money and Marshall/Patterson as your 2& 3 sounds about right, with one of them playing nickel mostly--draft a good one (cheap/low salary) and Carroll is your #5 and your set--but Marshall and Patterson arent overpaid, in general.

I wouldnt mind us drafting Geno Smith or Matt Barkley.

Houston Only Has 1 Pass Rusher!
San Fran Only Has 1 Pass Rusher!
GB Only Has 1 Pass Rusher!!

MOST IF NOT ALL NFL TEAMS ONLY HAVE 1 ELITE PASS RUSHER!!

NYGiants! Not Even 1 Player With Over 7 Sacks!!

Now What Makes The Teams!! With Only 1 Pass Rusher!! Have A Elite Pass Rush!! THE LB'S!!

LB's Allow DE and DT's Only Worry About Getting After the Passer!! And They Let The Secondary Cover!!

LB's Control The Middle Of The Field!! Sideline to Sideline!!

The Giants Might Have A Great Pass Rush!! But When The LB's Don't Control the First 10 yards after the LOS!! TEAMS WILL HOT ROUTE ALL DAY!!

Which is What is Happening to the Giants!! Hot Routes And Checkdowns!! Easiest Way To Neutralize a Pass Rush!!

And That The Giants D-Line Sucks Against the Run!! Meaning LB's Work Even Harder!!

DE's That Can Rush The Passers Are Not The Highest Priority!! LB's That Dominate!! Are A Higher Priority!

If The Fins Had Te'o The Fins Will Automatically Be In The Playoffs this Year!!

How Many Game Saving Or Game Winning INT's Did DANSBY DROP? 3-4-5 Easy Picks!!

dashi,

Geno Smith is projected to be 1st qb taken. He could go 1st overall to Chiefs, 6th overall to Bills, or 9th overall to 9th overall to Cardinals.

He wont slip past top 10. I would say 1st overall to Chiefs because if they dont pull the trigger, the Bills will at 6th overall.

Fion 77,

Barkley's 2013 draft scouting report:

Matt Barkley, USC
Height: 6-2. Weight: 230.
Projected 40 Time: 4.83.

Projected Round (2013): Top-25 Pick.

12/1/12: Barkley has had a rough senior season that has caused his stock to decline. He never had a great physical skill set, but the decision-making problems are the most worrisome. In Barkley's defense, his offensive line has been horrible. He's been under heat all season and USC has really missed Matt Kalil.

Barkley has completed 64 percent of his passes for 3,273 yards, 36 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. The senior didn't play well against Stanford, Washington and was just average against California. He had underwhelming games against UCLA and Arizona. Barkley injured his shoulder against the Bruins and was unable to play against Notre Dame. His status for the Bowl game is unknown.

So, if you realistically believe we will take this cat after drafting Tannehill 8th overall this season, I have only one word of advice:

Either up or lower your med count.

Fin--are you serious?--they'd have to be taken with our 1st rd pick, and considering the team is clearly making progress, you'd use that pick on a QB thats not even rated as high as Tannehill was? (and both have plenty of question marks)--wouldnt filling a major need, like at CB or DE/pass rusher with that first pick be a better idea?--not saying Tannehill is so great (we dont know yet) but Barkley or Smith dont seem like upgrades at all.

No, fins is not serious

I wish my team would draft one of those guys LOL

YG @2:46! Agreed.

Just Did A Quick Look At The QB Draft Ranking. Smith is #1. Finally Getting the Respect he Deserves.

YG, Dashi told You About People's Listed Height And Weight. Specially Before They Turn Pro!!

Barkley is Going To Fail Miserably When They Start The Measurables(The Combine)!! Barkley is Barely 6' FT! Has Little Hands and Below Average Arm Strength!! And Dashi Doubts That Barkley can Run! Plus Barkleys Decision Making Sucks!!

What Would G.Smith's Numbers look like! IF He Was Throwing To Real WR's!! Like Barkley!

Agreed. G.Smith Needs To Go #1!! But It Would't Surprise Me if They Pick Somebody Else!! And G.Smith Drops out of the Top 10!!

dashi,

Also, sitting at the #11 spot, the Jets are in between a rock and a hard place. Clearly, Mark Sanchez is a bust. Guess the qb who'll probably be there for them? Matt Barkley.

At #9 the Cards have the same problem. Matt Barkley. It'll be a very tough decision for both teams because the last time either team drafted a qb 1st rd:

It ended in a USC bust!

Though, if there, the Jets will probably take him at #11. At the same time they may also be hoping the Cards take him at #9 so they dont have to make that painful decision.

...I am ready to make a friendly wager. Barring a trade back, or up. I bet that the Phins take either an offensive lineman, or DE with our first pick. Looking at the draft, and where we will likely be picking. these are the BPA's...Fact. go look at the grades for all the players considered to be top 20 picks...And we find ourselves right in the middle of picking a lineman. This is from the angle of BPA only, which many of you have been preaching.

Put aside what you think as an individual, and look at the players in round 1...lineman,lineman,lineman..

YG,

Dashi can Only Hope! The Jets Pick Barkley!!

Talk About Killing 2 Birds With 1 Stone!

It IS ONLY RIGHT!! AFTER THE DELUSIONAL HATE!! ALL YEAR!! THE TROLL WANTING THE FINS TO DRAFT MATT!!

JUSTICE WILL BE SERVED!! Barkley to the JETS!

Dashi doesn't Even Wish that On The Bills! Let the Bills Pick Landry Jones!!

DD,

Dashi will Take You Up On That Friendly Offer.

Dashi says The Fins Will Draft MLB Ogletree or a Safety!

We Should be Picking around #18, Right?

Even Though A TE in the 1st Isn't Out of The Question!!

Lets watch Geno Smith going on in 15 minutes.

S.Bailey is also A WR For WVU!!

YG Should be Watching!

Matt Barkley is this years Andrew Luck. He could fall to us because of an injured shoulder which will heal 100%.

Dashi,

Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey should put on a show today. Tavon Austin is projected 1st rd. Walter Camp has the Pats taking him 1st rd.

In looking over the numbers posted by Mando the CAP #'s for R.Marshall and D.Patterson do seem a little high. I remember last off-season the Jags signed Aaron Ross away from the Giants for a 3 Yr./12 Mil deal or 4 Mil. a Yr. average. Ross has been a very productive CB throughout his NFL career while Marshall and Patterson are a couple of middle of the pack guys (serviceable back ups IMO) at best. A.Ross was the LCB on a 2 time S.B. Champ with C.Webster the RCB, in other words the top CB on the Giants squad. The only reason the Giants let him walk was because Terrell Thomas and Prince Amukamara were coming back from injury and they seemed set but Thomas had another ACL injury and the Prince has been up and down. I bet Coughlin would love a do over here and I thought the CAP strapped Fins didn't have the Bank but apparently the deal was do-able if you look at Marshall's CAP # in particular on a team going into the Yr. with a big fat ? with Nolan Carroll as the #3 CB on the team.

Some of these #'s are real head scratchers when analyzing these 3 as just one example. D.Patterson had one good Yr. in Philly that I can recall in his career but he drew the attention given Asante Samuel was the LCB out there. Over 10 Mil. invested in these 2 is unacceptable! You then analyze the extension given Trusnik with 600K in signing bonus and 915K CAP # (for a bench warmer who wouldn't make 75% of the teams in the NFL) and I start to wonder if Ireland is aware of the fact that his best DB R.Jones will be a FA in 2014 and should be the player he should be looking to extend before the end of next Season when he will get attention and the price will go up if not cost us the FRANCHISE tag. These are the things done by Ireland running the F.O. with supposed CAPOLOGIST Dawn Aponte which leave me really wondering about there ability to run the money game.

...Dashi. Cool. I LOVE Ogletree as a prospect. This may sound blasphemous. But IMO Ogletree has much better atheletiscm then TEO'. He just lacks the natural instincts, and IMO leadership.

I paid close attention to him in the SEC championship game. That dude is FAST...sideline to sideline propbably the fastest linebacker in this draft. you see the speed on of course the FG block. but watch the game and see him in pursuit an d coverage..he plays MLB like a saftey. He hits hard too.

My only issue is that Ogletree had got handled easily, and at times was way out of position. His speed made up for being in the wrong place. something he won't be able to get away with at the next level.

He is certainly an interesting prospect. I can't see the Phins taking him. As I think if you asked the FO they would disagree with your opinion of Dansby..

As far as the bet goes. I think we pick before 18. If it is BPA..Going just by the grades of the players projected today. My best guess is lineman purely off the information I have read.

fin4life,

Trusnik's still making peanuts for being 2nd on the lb depth chart, and he is a very important member of the st's. I think he also in the lb rotation to spell guys for a few plays when needed.

I've read on Phinsider.com, that Miami could free up almost another $12M or so by cutting both Richard Marshall and Richie Incognito, as well as restructuring both Soliai and Dansby. You now also have to factor in Patterson as well if he's to stick around beyond 2012. I truly believe Marshall won't be around due to his injury situation. Trusnik deserved an extension, he's a main cog on special teams and does give the team some depth.

Dashi,

Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey should put on a show today. Tavon Austin is projected 1st rd. Walter Camp has the Pats taking him 1st rd.

Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | December 29, 2012 at 03:21 PM

Here is were we really agree as you know I'm also a big fan of both Austin and Bailey as I've posted plenty. I do shy away a little from Geno Smith although. After the monster start he caught my attention and I saw a couple of games and while he does have a cannon arm he is real raw. The intermediate pass game will require a ton of work with him when he sees the exotic coverages the NFL has for him with CB's that can all run with his WR's. I am not so sure this kid is ready and as we've discussed plenty Barkley's arm gives pause thinking C.Ponder here.

Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | December 29, 2012 at 03:25 PM

I'm not disputing this point just the sense of urgency with a player we both know wouldn't make most rosters. I like thinking a few moves ahead and I think now is the time to extend R.Jones not wait till next Yr. and get caught in the Solia mess again.

..Fin4Life..I think as a general manager. Ireland has to be excited about this offseason. There is no way he is going to get sacked this offseason, so all of us doubters(me) need to take a wait and see approach. This has to be the most important offseason, and perhaps Irelands defining moment as our Gm. Will he put together a squad that is ready to compete? Will he surround Tannehill with some weapons that help ease his development? There are some big decisions to make, a surplus of cash, and picks at hand. Will he come through, or come up short?

Next season there will be no excuses if this team does not improve. It will be IMO his neck on the line. and rightly so.

DD,

That is Not Blasphemy. Ogletree is a Better Athlete!! Te'o is A Smarter FB Player. But IF Dashi is Not Mistaken Ogletree has only been Playing LB 2 Years. He was A DB and a RB before.

Dansby Should Be a Cap Casualty! Agreed, With the FO might Not Want To Make A Hole Before Covering IT! But Dansby is More Of the Problem Than The Solution!

Dansby Is Not Tough!! That Phony Injury Got Cured! After He Spoke Bad About The Coaches!! And The Coaches Told Him! If U are Really Injured You are Going On IR!!

Dansby Got Healed Real Quick!! Miracle Like!

no one really knows but the best value in the middle of Rd 1 seems to be on defense (WR would be a reach, TE too most likely)--Fins need pass rushing help so a DE/OLB would be fine--a CB would be ideal but none seem to grade that high outside of Milliner, who might be gone--if he's not and they like him, that should be the pick.

Dashi,

I caught your post earlier regarding just how good Dansby is or isn't and as a 4/3 MLB he should post over 150 tackles a Yr. given he's the man sideline to sideline. The 49ers play a 3/4 and Navarro Bowman has close to 140 tackles with P.Willis at around the same # as Dansby to lend an example to what you were alluding to also L.Kuechley is over 160 quietly with no real fan fare also in a 3/4 with Jon Beason in Car. By the way I believe all of these players with the exception of Willis make alot less than Dansby who we owe another 8.75 Mil. next Season aside from being a liability in pass coverage. The Dansby brigade will never accept what you say but he isn't even top 10 at his position while making top 5 money.

YG,

WVU has Good WR's! But They Are Small!! Not Really Helpful In the NFL!!

Or The WCO!

We Need Big, Strong Wr's That Can Run Routes And Catch The Ball Consistently!!

..Benz..Looking soley at the grades of these players. And then trying to look at what other teams picking ahead of us may do(I know this is close to impossible)..It screams DE, or offensive lineman. Especially if Ireland has the same player prototypes that his mentor Parcells had.(I would think he does)...

I would love to see us take an offensive playmaker. But if we are going off straight BPA. The grades say otherwise. Of course there is a ton of evaluation left, and things may change. I made an early bet, and i will lay in my bed as far as what I said. Dashi agreed to take the bet, and I will gladly give out props to anyone that wants to get on board. I may not like it. But Ithink Lineman(defensive included) will be our selection(again barring a trade)

Next season there will be no excuses if this team does not improve. It will be IMO his neck on the line. and rightly so.

DarrylDunphy | December 29, 2012 at 03:39 PM

Hey Brudda! Happy Holidays to ya out there in Montana need some info. on who you like coming out of that Confrence next Draft.

I agree this is the defining moment for Ireland and if you've noticed I've laid off him taking the very same wait and see approach, like yourself hoping he puts it together with 5 picks in the top 100 in a Rookie CAP ERA and a TON to spend on FA.

fin/Dashi--all true re: Dansby, at this point he's obviously a bit overpaid, but thats the case with plenty of players across the league--sort of hard to pick out a few elite players at his position and compare them after the fact (ie. after Dansby has his contract) so yeah, in retrospect, a few of these other LBs (who are about the best in the league by the way.....there are 50 other LBs to compare Dansby to as well), but thats the way it goes-all teams would love to have back a few contracts I'm sure, but whatever.

f4l @3:42. Agreed.

Just Cause Dansby Is Our MLB!! Doesn't Mean He IS A GREAT MLB!!

Dashi can Go In!! And Point Out That Dansby Has maybe 1 Game With 10+ Tackles!! Not A Lot For A MLB! The Fact That He Doesn't Change Plays When The Offense figures Out What We Are in!! That Dansby Jogs in Pursuit!! That Dansby is The First Player to Criticize The Team!! But NEVER TAKES RESPONSIBILITY WHEN THE DEFENSE SUCKS!!

And My Favorite Thing About Dansby!! He QUITS IN THE 4TH QTR OF EVERY GAME!! Some Like To Say He Gets Tired!! Dashi knows Dansby Quits!!

Dashi is Still MAD Over Dansby Quitting Last Year!! With 2 Minutes TO GO!! Against Tebow!!

The Fins Were Up 15-0!! With 2 Minutes Left!! The Offense didn't Suck!! The Defense Just Quit!!

Starting With Its Leader!! Dansby!!

F4L, Agreed. Ireland Needs To Do A Better Job Of Resigning Players!! Or At Least Figuring Out Earlier!! Who Needs To Be Extended!!

Psst..Dashi, lay off the drugs man.(Have you lost your damned mind)I like the kid ;there's not a QB not already in the NFL who is better than Flaco(ps I don't like Flacco)

DD--I agree, re: lineman seems to be a logical choice considering there should be several available, and I really hope its DL/pass rusher instead of OL in Rd 1--our O line has been relatively decent and hopefully Garner/Jerry will stick next year, but our pass rush needs an upgrade for sure--Vernon might improve and fill that void but that would be gravy--I still think CB is our biggest need but not sure the quality/quantity will be there in mid Rd 1

Dashi is a MORON. The FACTS state Dansby is ranked 9th in his position in the NFL by PFF. The FACTS state The Dolphins are VERY good at covering tight ends apart from Misi who sucks in coverage.

But you don't seem to understand the facts. And to say Geno Smith is already better than Joe Flacco. I mean HOW OLD ARE YOU? 5? GET OFF THIS BOARD

Why do some of you think Ireland has no mind of his own as though he is permanently programmed to think like Parcells? He has been around PLENTY of quality football people his whole life, both before and after Parcells.

Let's give that talk a rest already.

Dashi get a life and stop talking in 3rd person you FAKE Jets fan

..fin4Life..What UP!!!

The Big sky has a few really good prospects this year. The issue is that the best players on offense are juniors, and I don't think the 2 I will mention are coming out. Sadly, no Grizzlies have a shot. And as much as it hurts. 2 MSU players will get drafted this year.

FCS players I know a bit about that I think will be drafted this year.

Darell Taylor Saftey Sam Houston State,
Tim Flanders Running Back SHSU.JR..This guy is freekin a clone of Brian Westbrook. Check out the FCS championship game next week a rematch of the 2012 game SHSU v NDSU

Some Big Sky guys..
MLB Caleb Schreibeis MSU..Buck Bucchanan award winner(FCS best defesnive player) 7 forced fumbles, 14.5 tackles for a loss 12,5 sacks
DL Cory Minter...MSU
QB Sorensen Southern Utah..
RB Zach Bowman Northern Arizona. JR.
and my favorite...WR Brandon Kaufman WR Eastern Washington. Best wr prospect in the FCS(if he comes out)

Dashi is the reason why people hate Dolphins fans who I live in Miami. There just a bunch of r e t a r d s. With Little NFL knowledge...

..Benz. I agree that we need help at the corner spot. I think there is tremendous depth in the second and third rounds of this draft..one guy that I like that is flying below the radar is Utah State corner Will Davis. He got a Senior Bowl invite. So if you can remember his name check him out. I think he is a late second, early third round guy. But for our needs, he would fit perfect. He is a great press coverage guy. Something we don't, or can't do. He is 6'0 188 so he can handle bigger recievers, but is also capapble of playing the nickel... Will Davis.

benz | December 29, 2012 at 03:51 PM

Agreed he isn't the only overpaid guy League wide but to say were set and couldn't upgrade that position is a thought process expressed by some that I happen to disagree with. There are other factors to take into account here that seems lost on some.

If Starks leaves via FA then the move inside for Odrick is a natural one and makes sense but in this scenario if we had the option to replace Dansby inside then we could move Dansby back to his more natural OLB spot. We all know K.Misi played DE in the 4/3 in College at 265/270 pds and was projected a 3/4 OLB by the trifecta at 255 pds.

Well if you can move Dansby outside then how about getting Misi in the weight room back at 265 plus to rotate with Vernon at RDE?? My point is looking at MLB RD-1 isn't something we should dismiss out right and opens up a host of possibilities to work with especially if Staks walks.

Benz,

Just Cause We Signed A Bad Contract! Doesn't Mean We Have To Live With it!! The NFL Is Not Baseball or Basketball!! Contracts Aren't fully Guaranteed!!

Dashi doesn't Care About The Past!! Dansby Isn't Worth Now!! What He Is Getting Paid!! K.Burnett!!Yes!! Dansby!! NO!!

And Dashi Gave 3 Rookies!! That Are DOING WAY BETTER THAN DANSBY!! 1- First Round 2- Second Round Picks!!

Now Give Me 3 Rookie DE's Better Than Odrick!! Nevermind Comparing Them To Wake!!

Oh, And Make Sure The DE's Play The Run And The Pass As Well!!

Easier To Find A REAL MLB!! THAN IT IS TO HIT ON A ROOKIE DE!!

ANY DAY OF THE WEEK!!

TOP 3 MLB's In 2012 Draft

..Riley. If you do not believe that Ireland has similar player prototypes as Parcells. I believe that you would be mistaken. Ireland was mentored by Parcells. These lessons do not jst go away. Sure he may have tweeked said prototypes. Even so. I would bet they are very similar if you had priveledge to see the draft board.

Dashi again showing his ABSURD lack of NFL knowledge. No one respects you clown. Dansby is a top 10 player at his position. And to say a guy who has played through a torn bicep injury for 3 months is a quitter? Someone beat this moron to death!

Put aside what you think as an individual, and look at the players in round 1...lineman,lineman,lineman..

DarrylDunphy | December 29, 2012 at 03:05 PM

I know it will drive some on here nuts but if J.Long's contract demands are to high we need to remember that the best 2 Tackles rated are out of Tex. A&M (Joekel, Matthews) and our OL Coach and OC know them best although Matthews the RT may be there for us with pick 2A but the premiss isn't out of the question.

Thanks for the heads up on your Conf. guys will look them up as Ireland loves looking to that Conf. in the lower rounds.

Olivier Vernon has played 39% of the snaps very dispointing year from him he has shown he is AT BEST a decent OLB in a 4-3 nowhere near Dansby's level

Dashi sees His #1 Fan Is Out In Full Force!!

Time To Leave The Blog To The Daffodil!!

GD Everyone!!

..Fin4life. Tim Flanders is the one guy that I would love to have. I said he is a Westbrook clone. Really he is closer to Lamicheal James. So fast, and laterely quick. His jump stops, and cuts make it so hard to tackle him. Sadly. Because I believe that Ireland still uses player prototypes. I do not think he has the size to ever play running back here. Remember his name...

: Dashi | December 29, 2012 at 04:16 PM

Don't forget Bruce Carter who was playing real well for Dallas before injury and the kid Pete Carroll found RD-4 is playing better right now on a very good D. I felt his ability to stuff F.Gore in the hole Sunday night was key to making the 49ers one dimensional once they were down 14-0

Noted! Hadn't even heard the name before will look him up is there a projection for him like Taiwan Jones a couple of Yrs. ago??

DD,

Tim Flanders is son to a fiend of mine in OKC. Tim plays at Sam Houston St and his brother John Flanders plays at Tulsa.

Thier father's name is Anthony Flanders. Ive talked to him about both Timmy and John. Timmy's a junior and John's a senior.

fin4life,

Timmy's plenty big enough. He's 210lbs on a 5'9 body frame.

I thought you were in N.Y. ?

Timmy Flanders has also been hand timed running a sub 4.5 forty. His father told that Timmy has been hand timed at 4.43 at the lowest.

..YG..Sweet. I didn't realize he weighed that much. I know TF is a junior. He is an exciting player.

Fin4life,

I live in Florida. But I know Timmy and John Flanders father through mutual friends. People do travel you know.

Ive known thier father since 2005, before both his sons ever went to college.

I think I'd rather take Matt Barkley then Geno Smith. Barkley is the closest thing to Dan Marino in 25 years.

Interesting given Bush is probably not coming back and L.Miller who I saw plenty at UM has durability issues. I also like in the mid rounds Notre Dame RB/Slot player Theo Riddick

DD,

I always try to catch Sam Houston St and Tulsa games when on tv. I didnt even realize thaty anyone here ever even heard of Timmy Flanders. But Espn did have a Sam Houston game on tv this year.

fin4life,

I think the only thing that hurts Timmy Flanders draft stock is coming from Sam Houston St. Walter Camp doesnt even have him on thier undrafted rookie free agent list.

So there's chance this kid doesnt get drafted and makes it as a walk on somewhere. I believe he has real talent. He just hasnt had a chance to show against any of the big boys.
