Joe Philbin: Free agency on the table

There is a false narrative in the Dolfan community that because coach Joe Philbin came from the Green Bay Packers, he wants the Dolphins run like the Green Bay Packers, particularly when it comes to building the team.

The idea is that because Green Bay rarely dips toes in free agency, with few exceptions, Philbin wants the same in Miami.

That is not true.

"I'm not opposed to improving the football team in any way shape or form, by any method we can -- whether that's a trade whether that's free agency, draft obviously," Philbin said Monday in his end-of-season press conference. "I'm not opposed to any of that."

Philbin says player acquisition is a "collaborative" effort that includes general manager Jeff Ireland and his staff and Philbin and his staff. So free agency is on the table.

And that ties perfectly with what I tell you in my column today about the Dolphins being willing to attack the high end of free agency this offseason as they have not done since probably 2010.

As I've said before, the man in charge of personnel for the Dolphins will  continue to be general manager Jeff Ireland. Owner Stephen Ross will speak with the media later this week, but a source repeated to me again today that Ireland is absolutely safe in his job. So no change is coming there for this offseason.

This offseason is about improving everywhere -- particularly on offense.

"We certainly need to get better production and performance out of the offensive unit," Philbin said.

The coach wants to see massive improvement in the team's turnover margin. It was minus 10 this year which was in the bottom quarter of the league. And he wants to see more plays on both offense and defense relative to the passing game.

"I think these guys performed well," Philbin said. "We have to do a better job of putting points on the board. This is not a complicated game. We have to do a better job there. Part of the takeway issue is getting interceptions and fumble recoveries. But I don't know it's isolated to the receiver or DB positions.

"We need to address the explosive play element on both sides of the ball. We got to create more, we have to eliminate more from our opponent's play."

Well, if that doesn't speak to receivers (including TEs on offense) and DBs (particularly corners on defense) I don't know who it speaks to.

Among the things Philbin wants to improve is himself.

"I definitely need to improve like anybody else, no question about it," he said. "That's what the offseason is all about. I haven't had time to reflect necessarily going through the exit process today and meeting with the players. Obviously we had a plan in place for this season. I thought it was a good plan. However, obviously you have to make changes and adjustments and learn and make improvements. And we'll do that. We'll listen to the suggestions of some of the guys you work with on a consistent basis and see if they have ideas that may or may not benefit the program."

Improvement is the order of the day all around this franchise, folks. The Dolphins finished 7-9 and out of the playoffs. That's 7-9, 7-9, 6-10, and 7-9 in the last four seasons. And none of those seasons included a postseason berth.

"7-9 is not good enough," Philbin said. "... We have a lot of work to do. That's really where we are."

Now People here enthused over nondraftable Players. HOHO! You really want the Dolphins to not win , don't you? I've known that for a while.

YG,

Agreed. With Most The Picks Except 1!!

U Know Who!!

Call Me Skeptical!! Or Just A Real Hard Critic!!

Either/or!

Something About Him Doesn't Make Me Feel Sure The Kid Is Going To Be Great! He Might Be Good!! And Good Is Better Than What We Have!! But it is still risky!!

Now With a 3rd!! Dashi doesn't Mind The Risk!!

And Agreed! Jennings, Might Be The Wr The Fins are Looking Into!! And He Is Looking Into The Fins!! (That says a lot about Philbin!! Players That Played for him Before Still want to Play For Him)

Sign Wallace or Greg Jennings AND Grimes. Be aggressive. This team needs elite talent NOW that they can count on, not just the possibility of drafted talent. You have to sign a big time FA wide receiver if you value Tannehill's future and sanity. Get him some GUARANTEED help.

Let Long, Fasano, Clemons, Starks, Garner and Bush go. Keep Hartline and Sean Smith (but only if Smith is willing to take 5 mill a year or less).

Trade down in the first round and take Tyler Eifert. In the 2nd and 3rd rounds (5 picks if they trade down), take: a CB, a WR, a OT, a OLB pass rusher and a safety.

Use the rest of the picks on BPA. EZ game.

dashi,

Normally I would agree about Bailey. There are two great things youre not also equating in. Add him into the wr/te I suggest drafting and Greg Jennings in fa. Then you have a very potent recievings unit. Who the hell do defenses focus stopping w/o the others going nuts?

Plus, Bailey is no one trick pony. He's been extremely productive his entire college career.

Yesterday

Have you any thoughts on drafting Teo?

YG,

I was also impresed with Deandre Hopkins yesterday. If the fins do wind up trading down and taking a receiver, that kid is the one I want. He was awesome last night and looked like a player that can take over a game. I don't think that they can take him with the 12th pick as that would be reaching but taking him at 20 and picking up another 2nd round pick is reasonable.

I have a feeling that the fins are not going to spend big FA money on a Diva receiver. That is not Philbin's style. Therefore, I would not be surprised with either the aforementioned scenario or taking WR Kennan Allen at 12 (IMO reaching). There is pressure in taking a #1 receiver and I just don't think that Philbin wants to bring in a selfish diva in FA.

I am watching the Rose Bowl. Zach Ertz will not be around when we pick in the 2nd round. IMO he is the best TE in the nation. He just made an outstanding catch.

I also like RB Ball from Wisconsin. He would be a nice pick in the 3rd round. I also don't trust Daniel Thomas' durability and I think that Reggie Bush will be released. I don't think that Philbin is crazy about him and he is not an every down back.

Orlando Dolphan,

Exactly why I said trade down to pick up an "extra 2nd rd pick". Notice my mock has "three 2nd rd picks"?

IMO, the late 1st and 2nd rd has so many value picks at so many different positions, it almost no-brainer to try and pick up "an extra starter". I dont think anyone will be at #12 for us that is such an impact player we can not pass on.

Orlando Dolphan,

No worry, of the 3 best TE's(Ertz, Eiffert, Fauria), Joseph Fauria's by far the better "REDZONE" TE. Fauria has 12 tds this year.

While everyone's talking Eiffert/ Ertz, I wouldnt be surprised if someone takes Fauria first. At least one of these te's will still be on the board with our 2nd pick.

At least I hope. LOL...

Trading down actually gives us 6 picks in the top 100, instead of the original 5.

Douchi,

If ya wanna tell people what to say maybe ya should get your own blog, yes?

Take Montee Ball in the second round let Bush walk. The kid a TD machine

Trading down actually gives us 6 picks in the top 100, instead of the original 5.

So 5 + 1 = 6?

Interesting.

YG,

Agreed. Bailey as Part Of a Unit!! Makes a lot of sense!

Never Thought about it like That. Dashi was Just Looking at The Players Overall Skill, Not Just How He Would Fit Into The System.

But Yes! Using that As A Factor! And That We Have D.Bess To School Him! The Fins Wouldn't Need Another Option In The Slot!

Just Made Me Think About The Position In A Whole New Light!! (No Sarcasm)

For Real!

Think about this!

Sign Jennings! Draft Bailey 2b/3a! Hopefully With The Marsha Pick!! So The Clowns Can Stop Crying! We Got Bailey and Egnew For Marsha!! Doesn't Sound Bad To Me!! Or We Got Bailey & Lattimore For Vontae!! With The 6th Rd Pick! Ireland Hits A Acorn!!

The Wr Depth Chart Will Look Like This!!

Jennings
Bess
Bailey
Matthews
Binns

Sorry, Hartline Just Isn't In The Plans!! And The Fins Would Only Really Be Paying Big Money On Jennings!! And I See Jennings Only Making More Than $2 Million More Than Hartline In The Open Market!! Not Bad!! If You Ask Me! Hartline $5M Or Jennings $7M! We Can't Pick Both!

Its Either Resign Hartline Or Sign A FA WR!! Dashi is Picking FA WR!!

Hartline, Will Command Around $5M a YR!! We CAN NOT DO BOTH!! To Much Money On WR's!!

And If We Plan On Drafting A Wr!! Signing 2 FA WR's!! Is Not The Way To Do It!

1 FA WR, 1 Mid Pick WR! (Mid Meaning 2nd-3rd)

I have always liked Montee Ball. Like I said I have concerns about Thomas' durability and feel that if we let Bush walk, we need a RB with one of our top 100 picks. All the mocks seem to indicate that he will be around in the 3rd that is where I would take him if he is available. As much as I like Ball, we have to fill other holes with the picks in the 1st and 2nd round (i.e. pass rusher, WR, TE, CB).

YG.........WHAT HAPPENED TO CASTRO ,YOUR Favorite plaYER FROM LAST YEAR DRAFT?????????

PLEASE ,UPDATE US .......

Draft Matt Barkley or Bust! He would've been the 2nd pick last year ahead of RG3! He's a steal because he's injured but will make a full recovery.

DASHI,

TRY TO BE HUMPLE ...........

Hopefully, I Got the Point Across.

We Can not Sign 2 Free Agent Wr's! Or Draft 2 Wr's! And That Hartline Is Gone!

Here Is Another Picture!!

M.Wallace
Bess
D.Hopkins
Matthews
Binns

Yes, Matthews and Binns Are In The Picture!! It Would Cost The Fins Less Than $800k a yr, for The Next 2-3 Years!

HUMBLE

WE CAN SAVE MORE MONEY BY RELEASING OUR GARAGE MANAGER ,THAT'S 2 MILLION A YEAR ......

Dashi is Not Saying How To Talk!!

Douchi as You Say! Is Not 1 To Talk!! You Can Say Whatever You Want!!

But When Somebody Says STOP!! IT MEANS STOP!!

And Not Just Mando!! Everyone at Some Point Or Another Has Told You To STOP!!!

The HARASSING Is What Bothers Me!

Language!! Ha! Dashi Could Care More! Or Less!

I Have A Theory!! God Gave People Words! And We Change The Meaning To Those Every So Often!!

What If S H I T!! Was FLOWER!! Wouldn't Then Flower Be a Cursed Word!!

And We Are Mostly All Grown Here!! We Can Speak Like Adults!!

JUST THE STOP WITH CONSTANT BICKERING!! REPEATING THE SAME FLOWERS!!

Trading down just brings more scrubs. We have enough scrubs! lol

Draft Monte Ball with a second and let Bush walk this guy is Adrian Peterson in college

* People Gave People Words

* Just STOP

From 6:10!

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE SICK AND TIRED OF THE LOSING! HELP MAKE THE CHANGE!

DASHI,

WHO DO YOU LIVE WITH ?

A WIFE ?
KIDS ?

Four losing seasons in a row. Is Jeff Ireland really coming back?

AL0c0,

Im sure as you know DeCatro was hurt early and didnt comeback until the last few games of the season. Still is hands down the best OG in the draft last year.

I still believe he's a future pro bowler.

1- Te'o,

Or Ogletree If We Trade Down. Ogletree Is Only A Junior! And Hasn't Played The Position! To Long(Lacks Experience)! But At Least He has Played MLB! Dansby himself was a SS In College! And A RB, Before That! Dansby Didn't Have A Defensive Background! And He Wants To Play MLB! For The First Time In His Life!! It Showed!! The Middle Was Always Open!

But at #12! If Te'o Is Still There! He Is #1 BPA/NEED!! Te'o Is Worth The Extra #2,#3, and #4 The Fins Will Get For Trading Down!! Hopefully Alabama Wins! And Te'o Runs A Slow Combine! We Can Only Hope!!

1- Te'o
2- Fauria
2b- Bailey
3a- FS
3b- LG
4- RG
5- CB
6- Lattimore
7- K

Best Possible Draft Scenario In My Book!

Remember Keep Long, Keep Starks, Keep Smith! Let The Others Walk!

On Starks

Look at it This Way!!

If We Can Keep Starks For Something Reasonable!! We Can Let Soliai Walk Next Year!! If He Is Still Asking For To Much!!

Ans Starks and Odrick!! Will Look Good As The DT's!! We Can Draft A Pass Rusher Early Next Year!!

Hope you guys watch somevtape on justin hunter from tennessee he is best wr in draft n at 6'4 and faster than all the wrs u guys are talkin bout he has to be the pick at end of 1st rd hes a beast just watch the film

1st So we get the big guy in hunter and sign the speed in wallace or jennings

2nd te eifert or ertz

Tannehill now has talent to play with n will show us he can be a star he has it in him n u can see it this yr was HUGE to get that experience with his smarts he will greatly improve next season plus we will get to finally see lamar miller bustin runs ... You notice even in his few carries this yr he was always jus bout to break it n get tripped up at end he just didnt get carries to have rythm but he will now with "stutterin i love losing yrds" reggie bush gone

Keep an eye on Stanford DE Trent Murphy(#93). He's as solid as they come rushing the passer. Murphy has 8 qb bedsacks this year.

Wiscosin is actually doubl teaming him this game. He's 2nd rd'er on my draft list:

1. Deandre Hopkins wr Clemson
2a. Joseph Fauria TE UCLA
2b. Stedman Bailey wr WVU
2c. Trent Murphy DE Stanford

Hopkins will only be avg hes stiff n not that fast pleasecwatch hunter n check all these guys 40 times for free on espn hunter is bigger and fast than all

dashi,

Seeing that offense not defense is our primary need. The only mlb I would select 1st rd is T'eo if he fell to us.

For me it's T'eo or go with Dansby another season. I dont want to gamble with a "2nd best" mlb when we need so much offensive help.

YG.........
I NOTICE ,EVERY TIME YOU PICK A GOOD PLAYER FOR THE FIRST PICK,SOME THING HAPPENS TO THAT PKAER .I CALL THAT ,(( THE YG CURSE )).....

Lube up with Mayo
For Mante T'eo

DeCastro was Last Years! C.Womack!

Decastro Is Partly To Blame For Martin Dropping Into The Second!! Everyone Thought DeCastro Was Hiding A lot Of Martins Mistakes! And The Reason Stanford Ran To The Left!! Almost All The Time!!

Trust Me! Pitt isn't Mad! That Next Year They Have DeCastro And Pouncey Inside!!

If u want a rb in middle of draft we should grab lacy from bama hes a beast n would be perfect mix wit miller i think we can all agree thomas is a dud who just isnt a good rb hes a decent maub 3rd down back MAYB

Ctphins,

There isnt a monster wr in this draft. Im talking putting together a dynamic recieving corps for 2013. See this man:

#1 Greg Jennings
#2 Deandre Hopkins
Slot- Stedman Bailey
TE- Joseph Fauria

This instantly makes this one of the most dangerous "recieving corps" in the league.

Wallace or Jennings will be for 8 Million or more.
Player to Look at in FA
Mike Jenkins
Leroy Hill
Immanuel Sanders
Delanie Walker

ctphins,

Do some draft research. Lacy is pegged a solid 2nd rd'er. No way he's there mid rounds.

Brandon @ 6:41,

Please dont quit the day job.

Order of 2013 draft

1 Kansas City Chiefs
2 Jacksonville Jaguars
3 Oakland Raiders
4 Philadelphia Eagles
5 Detroit Lions
6 Cleveland Browns
7 Arizona Cardinals
8 Buffalo Bills
9 New York Jets
10 Tennessee Titans
11 San Diego Chargers
12 Miami Dolphins

With the NFL going spread crazy it's looking like Geno Smith will go #1 overall, I feel he's still to raw followed by Star Lotulelei to Jax and IMO the BA in entire draft a real monster DT from Utah were Ireland looks plenty but this guy never slides. My only fear is Oakland at #3 taking Te'o and giving up on McClain but outside of that look at the other picks ahead of Miami. Philly and Det. both need OT's and CB's (Philly will dump big money Nandi and maybe even DRC) here is were the 1st Tackle (maybe Joekel) and Milliner go IMO.

Cleveland could also be a stop for Te'o but lacking any real pass rusher it isn't out of possibility to think this will be were D.Moore goes. Arz. needs OL as well and here goes Mich. OT Taylor Lewan (maybe A&M's J.Matthews in 1st draft shocker) The Bills need a FRANCHISE QB desperately and if not M.Barkley then amybe Ark. QB Tyler Wilson with the Jets grabbing the other.

Tenn. and S.D. need WR's and here we could see Allen and Woods go leaving us Te'o in very realistic scenario and if not I stand firm on drafting D looking at Ga. OLB Jarvis Jones who I feel the BA at his position and the one Vonn Miller type pass rusher with cover skills nobody mentions. I stand firm that the 1st three picks of this draft need to be on D with a heavy load available on O in FA. I will not waver in this thought process.

None of this matters. That idiot Ireland will screw up the offseason and we'll b under 500 again next year. We will never win anything while that idiot is employed

F4L, Thanks For That Insightful Post!

Te'o Or J.Jones Falling To Us Sounds Realistic!!

YG, Agreed! 2nd Best MLB No!! But 2nd Best LB!! Yes!! J.Jones! Will Fix 1 LB Spot!!

I See The Fins Cutting Dansby!! For Cap Reason!! Yes! We Have Cap Space! But That Is What Ireland Should Say!!

What's The Cap Reason?

Dansby Is Not Worth $9+ Million!

Dansby Is Not Even Worth! $5 Million!! Burnnett Is A Better MLB! Than Dansby!

The Fins Should Cut Dansby! Sign A FA LB! For About $5-6M! Isn't Vilma A FA? Vilma can do More For Less!! And He Is A Real 4-3 MLB!!

And Perfect Fit!! Vilma Is From Miami! Went To UM! Got Drafted By The Jets! Actually Won A Superbowl!! And Let's His Play Do The Talking!!

Oh, almost Forgot!! Vilma has actually Gone To The Pro bowl!!

fin4life,

Seems youve forgotten the age factor going heavty on offense in fa. Ok fine, if youre suggesting sign both Jennings and Wallace, unrealistic $100 million($50 mill a piece) spent on two wr's.

Then there's TE.Fred Davis and Jared Cook's teams arent going to let these "young te's" walk. So youre talking Dustin Keller at best. Keller has too many issues staying healthy.

Even if Ireland were crazed enough to spend $100 million to bring Jennings and Wallace in, who's the #1 and who's the #2? That also looks like a potential lockeroom issue for whomever is deemed the #2. But why would you spend $50 million on for a #2 wr anyway?

fin4life,

We're also 5th in the nfl in "POINTS ALLOWE$D". The Broncos are 1st in points allowed with only 289 against them. Our offense only scored 288pts in 2013.

We scored 1 fewer point than Denver allowed for the year. So even had our defense(317pt) had allowed only 289pts. it still would have been 1 more point allowed than our offense scored this season.

This Offseason Should Be Part Keeping Our Own Players! Part Signing 2-3 Top Fa's! Part Drafting The Right Players!

Secondary!

Keep Smith! Don't Resign Clemons! Keep Either RM or DP! 1 of The 2! Shouldn't Keep Both! Sign Another CB In Free Agency! Good CB's In FA! And Draft a FS! With 1 Of The Top 3 Picks!

LineBackers

Cut Dansby! Sign FA LB!! Move Misi To DE! Draft Best LB Available In The 1st! New LB Corp Should Look Like This! Burnett, FA LB, and Rookie LB! With Trusnik, Kaddu, Misi and OV! Serving For Depth! Or Depending On Formation! Misi and OV can Rush Standing Up!

D-Line

Keep Starks! Let Go Of McDaniel! Either Sign A Cheap FA for 1 Or 2 Years! A la Osi! But Not Osi! Or Draft A Project Pass Rusher With a 4th! The D-Line Is Not The Problem!!

I would love to trade down and pick up a second round pick, however, that is easier said than done. Teams are not dumb enough to give up a second round pick to take move up to take an OT. Last time Ireland had a 12th pick, he had to trade down to 28 to pick up the second round pick (he picked Odrick and Misi) and that was for SD to take a dynamic RB in Mathews. So I would not count on the fins trading down to 20 and picking up a second round pick.

I think that Keenan Allen and Hunter will shine in the combine. Therefore, I think that the fins will take a either Hunter or Allen with that pick. I just don't think that given what I have seen from Philbin and the fins that they will go out and pay Wallace 9 or 10 million a year. Hartline actually had better numbers than Wallace this year. Hartline will be resigned and the fins add a WR with their first pick.

fin4life,

IMO, the true overall measure of a defense is how its ranked in pts allowed. We finished 5th in the league. This means though there are some issues, overall this defense was very tough to score on.

On the otherhand, our offense found it very tough to score.

Orlando, sitting at #12 and trading back, youre probably looking at trying to do business with one of the playoff teams(20's and further). It depends on who the team is and what thier needs are.

Still, most of what we all talk here is hypothetical anyway. Its based on if the opportunity presents itself.

dashi,

The only of our own players I would heavily look at keeping are Jake Long and Reggie Bush. But even these two have to be at the right price.

Whomever we cant keep of Bush/Long opens the door to keeping Starks. Anyone else can take a hike for all that I care.

Only thing Hartline proved was if he's the #1 wr, its going to be a very long season trying to put points on the scoreboard. Even though he barely eclipsed 1,000yds there's nothing written on him that says he's a must keep.

He was easuly the best of a lousy wr corps. The least he could have done was have 1,000yds recieving and he barely did that.

Dolphins pick this year
1. WR Hunter or Allen
2a. CB Poyer
2b. DE John Simeon
3a. TE Fauria/Jordan Reed
3b. BA safety
4a. WR Swope from TA&M (Ireland Doubles down)

Expect something similar to this in the draft.

They resigns Long, Starks, Smith, Hartline. Clemmons, Mcdaniel, Fasano, and Bush walk.

Yeah, Hartline is getting way, way overrated. He is a solid enough WR but 1 touchdown in a whole season is AWFUL. You start 16 games, you should be able to score twice by accident.

Hartline is a good #3 wideout, nothing more. I'm fine if they keep him but I'm fine if they let him go too. It's not like this season was an aberration, he is always a ghost in the red zone.

fin4life,

Offensively we were 5th worse in scoring 3 of those offense that were worse are picking top 5.

ENUFF SAID.

YG, please keep in mind our defense played a very weak schedule.,

Hartline has great hands. Agreed that he is not a #1 but he is reliable and would probably do better if he had a #1 getting all of he attention. If either Hunter or Allen are true #1s, then Hartline will be more effective. You add Bess, a top FA TE, and another rookie TE and you have a pretty good receiving group.

I would take a chance on a FA WR, resign Hartline, add Stedman Baily and Ertz in the second. However, that is not what I think they will do. The fins will try to resign most of their players, they will be careful in not spending on other's rejects, and they will try to build to the draft.

Orlando Dolphan,

Good luck with Fauria being around in "your draft" 3rd rd. Guys has 12 tds recieving. A very good "REDZONE TE" is now a premium in the nfl.

Im pretty sure he'll be snatched up in the 2nd rd at the latest.

I consider the offense THE priority this off season. Can't expect any QB to compete and progress with the weapons on this team. With that said, I was thoroughly unimpressed with the LB corp during the Pats game and those guys were lost and if you consider their impact this year it was at best average. Look at their numbers...INTs, Passes Defended, Sacks, Tackles and FF's. Nothing special. We have so many need areas we must go BPA in FA and the Draft. Priorities listed below. BTW it's crazy at this point to narrow down to specific names past the 1st round. We have no idea what the other 31 teams will do and what impact the GM's and coaches will have after Black Monday. It's more realistic to identify a few players at the positions we need and shoot for them...of course being flexible to any of them.

#1 a #1 WR
#2 a #1 CB
#3 a #1 RB
#4 LB's
#5 Pass Catching TE

« 1 2 ... 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 »
