Joe Philbin: Free agency on the table

There is a false narrative in the Dolfan community that because coach Joe Philbin came from the Green Bay Packers, he wants the Dolphins run like the Green Bay Packers, particularly when it comes to building the team.

The idea is that because Green Bay rarely dips toes in free agency, with few exceptions, Philbin wants the same in Miami.

That is not true.

"I'm not opposed to improving the football team in any way shape or form, by any method we can -- whether that's a trade whether that's free agency, draft obviously," Philbin said Monday in his end-of-season press conference. "I'm not opposed to any of that."

Philbin says player acquisition is a "collaborative" effort that includes general manager Jeff Ireland and his staff and Philbin and his staff. So free agency is on the table.

And that ties perfectly with what I tell you in my column today about the Dolphins being willing to attack the high end of free agency this offseason as they have not done since probably 2010.

As I've said before, the man in charge of personnel for the Dolphins will  continue to be general manager Jeff Ireland. Owner Stephen Ross will speak with the media later this week, but a source repeated to me again today that Ireland is absolutely safe in his job. So no change is coming there for this offseason.

This offseason is about improving everywhere -- particularly on offense.

"We certainly need to get better production and performance out of the offensive unit," Philbin said.

The coach wants to see massive improvement in the team's turnover margin. It was minus 10 this year which was in the bottom quarter of the league. And he wants to see more plays on both offense and defense relative to the passing game.

"I think these guys performed well," Philbin said. "We have to do a better job of putting points on the board. This is not a complicated game. We have to do a better job there. Part of the takeway issue is getting interceptions and fumble recoveries. But I don't know it's isolated to the receiver or DB positions.

"We need to address the explosive play element on both sides of the ball. We got to create more, we have to eliminate more from our opponent's play."

Well, if that doesn't speak to receivers (including TEs on offense) and DBs (particularly corners on defense) I don't know who it speaks to.

Among the things Philbin wants to improve is himself.

"I definitely need to improve like anybody else, no question about it," he said. "That's what the offseason is all about. I haven't had time to reflect necessarily going through the exit process today and meeting with the players. Obviously we had a plan in place for this season. I thought it was a good plan. However, obviously you have to make changes and adjustments and learn and make improvements. And we'll do that. We'll listen to the suggestions of some of the guys you work with on a consistent basis and see if they have ideas that may or may not benefit the program."

Improvement is the order of the day all around this franchise, folks. The Dolphins finished 7-9 and out of the playoffs. That's 7-9, 7-9, 6-10, and 7-9 in the last four seasons. And none of those seasons included a postseason berth.

"7-9 is not good enough," Philbin said. "... We have a lot of work to do. That's really where we are."

Keep T-Hill and His Caddie(Devlin)! Let M&M Walk! Draft A Qb With A 6th! Probably Matt Barkley!! Nah! We Can Do Better! Just Get Some Kid That Has The Tools! But Needs The Right Coaching!! Colin Klein!!

That and Send T-Hill!! To The "Dan Marino School Of Pocket Awareness, Footwork, and Pump-Fake Academy"!! T-Hill Gets His Footwork Down In The Pocket! And Keeps Learning The Tricks Of The Position! It Can Only Help!! T-Hill Just Needs To Polish His Skills! C'mon DAN!! Do Something For The Franchise!! The Fins Finally Have Stopped Disrespecting Your Legacy! And Finally Wasted a 1st Round Pick On A QB!

Let Bush Walk! Agreed, D.Thomas Is A 3rd Down Back At Best! And He Seems Lazy! L.Miller Should Be The Starter! And The Fins Should Draft another RB with a Mid or Lower Pick!! No Need To Sign A FA RB!

Let Clay and Lane Battle It Out!! Lane Is OK! But He Doesn't Bring A lot To The Table!! Clay can Be A Bigger Threat As a FB than Lane!!

Don't sign Fasano! No FA TE!! Draft a TE High! Draft a TE Low! Egnew, Clay, 2 Rookie TE's!! Yes! Clay Can Play FB/H-Back! A H-Back! Should Never Be Your Lead TE!!

KEEP LONG! Yes! He Is #1 Priority! I Know Some Of You Don't Think So!! But Long Is Important To The Fins Future!! Incognito and Jerry Have To Go! Keep Jerry 1 More Year! For Depth and That He Doesn't Cost To Much!! Sign 1 FA Guard!! Draft 2 Guards!! In The Mid Round!

Hi Dashi!

Hartline had Marshall getting all of the attention in 2011. He had 3tds recieving.

Yeah get a #1 wr and Hartline will give us 3 tds recieving.

Yeah if they want Fauria, they would have to grab him at 42. Which is a good plan if they take the best available pass rusher at 12, a CB with the Colts 2nd round pick and grab one of the big FA wide receivers.

Then you can take an OT and another WR in the third and that's a great start at filling holes.

Hartline had Marshall getting all of the attention in 2011. He had 3tds recieving.

Yeah get a #1 wr and Hartline will give us 3 tds recieving.

Posted by: Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | January 01, 2013 at 07:42 PM

He also had a second string QB and third string oline.

I like Fauria also but most mocks having going in the 3rd or 4th round.

I think that we are putting too much stock on WRs. I think that the future of this team is on Tannehill. Brady does not have any of these great receivers. Remember Welker was Davon Bess when he was here, it is Brady that has made him look like a great receiver. Instead the patriots have two great TEs and solid WRs but they have a great QB. Simply put T-Hill has to develop for us to go anywhere. That is why I think that Philbin will just build this team with WRs that fit his system and will stay away from the high paid divas.

If ya wanna tell people what to say maybe ya should get your own blog, yes?

Please stop trying to appologize for Hartline. He is what he is, a "4TH RD" drafted wr. Usually these types hit thier ceiling at #3 wr. Hartline isnt that occassional gem you find at wr 4th rd or later.

He's not going to be better just because we wish him to.

Brady has an elite slot receiver, a decent guy in Lloyd and two if the best tight ends in the NFL. Acting like he has no weapons is ridiculous.

Did you miss the endless loop of replays against New England showing NO ONE OPEN?!?!?

Miami needs fresh blood at WR and TE and literally no one in football disputes this.

Its not fair to judge Hartline with TanneBust.

Also, if we wanna find a great te, we had better stop drafting them 3rd and 4th rd.

Hernandez is a 3rd rd te, but have you noticed he's half as effective without Gronk in there? Gronk is a 2nd rd TE that should have been rated 1st rd.

Exactcy Riley! He had Henne and Moore throwing him the ball. Also, he is young and this year has finally developed. This was his 3rd year and he finally blossomed. Again, I am not saying that he is Calvin Johnson but he is reliable and plays well between the 20s. Again except for TDs, his yards, receptions, and yards after the catch average were better than Wallace. He is a hard worker and stays out of trouble. You know what you have with Hartine. The fins need a #1 because Hartline is not but I would not just let him walk to create a new hole.

Thanks For seeing What I've Been Trying To Say!

If We Sign Hartline!! WE CAN NOT SIGN A FA WR!!

Same Goes With TE!! You Guys Want To Give A FA TE $4-5 Mil! And Still Want To Draft A Replacement!!

Long Is A Must Sign! Smith and Starks Are We Should Sign!!

Reggie Is Garbage!! $4-5 Mil For Reggie To Start!! Is Not A Wise Choice!! Reggie Doesn't want To Say It! Because Remember He Has To Play The Victim!! But Reggie Will Not Play Second Fiddle!! For Any Of The RB's On The Dolphins!! Reggie Thinks He is A Star!!

And We Can Find A Better RB! That Can Be Part Of A Unit! Low in The Draft!! Lattimore or That Kid You say from SMHU! Remember We Don't Need A Feature Back!! We Need RB's That Fit The System! Even If L.Miller Was Starting!! He Won't Get 250+ Carries!!

We Have 3 Rb's That Will Still Be Under Contract! For Next Year!! Maybe Ireland Brings Back The RB from The CFL that Got Cut this year because we had To Many! And Lane and Thigpen were Pleasant Surprises!!

Messum or something was His Name! The Guy Could Be A Short Yardage Guy! He Just Got Hurt In TC!

Its not fair to judge Hartline with TanneBust.
Posted by: Jay | January 01, 2013 at 07:49 PM

Its about as fair as trying to judge your so-called "Tanne-bust" by Brian Hartline. Geesh, youre an idiot. LOL...

Hartline leaving doesn't leave a hole. Saying an offensive player is good except TDs is like saying a singer is really great except their voice.

Hate to bust your bubble but this is Hartline's 4th season. He was drafted in 2009 with Patrick Turner.

Drafted players are not ufa's after 3 seasons. Youre really stuck on Hartline. I hope Ireland isnt or this offense will never hit its true stride in scoring points.

TE Graham from NO was picked in the 4th round.

You have to find nuggets in the later rounds. You cannot build a team just with 1st and 2nd round picks. Mike Wallace was a 4th round pick and Welker was not even drafted. Hartline is a pro bowl alternate this , so obviously the football world thinks that he is pretty good.

If you have to find nuggets in later rounds, we might as well give up until Ireland is gone. He struggles to find nuggets in the early rounds.

We can sign Hartline to #2 money but not as a #1. I'm a fan of Hartline but he has to understand or he'll be walking. I like the guy and think he gives it his all. Pay the guy #2 money and no more. The guy made less than 1.5 mil this year. Double or triple his pay but if that's not enough let's just say...Thanks but no.

I would prefer to draft a can't miss, sure fire Player with our 1st pick. a Luke Joeckel, Demitri Moore, Manti Te'o. For that, you have to trade up, but c'mon, don't get cheap on Us. We like the Best.

One has to consider the circumstances. Hartline's first three years had 3 different QB's, 2 different HC's and 3 different OC's, along with a very faulty oline.

No rookie alpha receiver would have thrived starting off under those conditions, so we can't expect Hartline to have done so. I say he has done quite well considering the circumstances.

Nobody is saying he is Calvin Johnson, but if he got snatched up by NE, NO, GB, you'd all be asking why do we let our best players walk.

Am watching Rose Bowl and just caught your posts.

YG, when did I ever post the absurd idea of signing both Wallace and Jennings?? I never posted nor suggested such nonsense! I was clear we should sign one then maybe another on the cheap and listed the candidates for you were Donnie Avery, Andrew Hawkins, Julian Edelman and even Panthers WR Steve Smith (who I feel has plenty left and would absolutely love) should the rumors of Hartline seeking big money deal prove true.

I also stated clearly that I tie up the first couple of picks on D in other words 1st RD with 2A. I like S.Bailey 2B or even Fauria (T.E. UCLA) but will draft if up to me (which unfortunately it isn't because I would have us in better contention than Ireland) Te'o RD-1 and if he's gone then I look at J.Jones. If by some chance both gone then I would entertain the trade down to 20 taking FSU CB Xavier Rhodes (watch him tonight) then with additional 2 would look at DE from Michigan St Gholston (under radar big time) while at 2A taking LSU Safety Eric Reid or TJ McDonald.

I've been pretty steady in this scenario for sometime but never ever suggested signing 2 WR's at 50 Mil unlike the Al Davis (RIP) of the last couple decades I still have my marbles and can add. My intuition also has me wondering if Lattimore drops because if he does we need to look at grabbing him as early as the 4th if there. Willis McGahee off a worse injury in Title game was taken RD-1 and F.Gore had the same issues with the knees at the U before becoming the inconvenient truth to everybody outside Dade County.

Only hope for future is that Philbin will have a big say in free agency and draft with veto power over Ireland's bonehead decisions

Hartline Shouldn't earn More Than D.Bess! Not On This Team!

Agreed. It is a Little Difficult To Think That You Can Mock Multiple Rounds! We are Just Trying To Narrow Down Needs by Round! And Sometimes Try To Give A Face to the Position at That Particular Round!

Else Most Mocks will Look Like This!

1- LB
2a- TE
2b- WR
3a- FS
3b- LG
4- RG
5- RB
6- CB or QB
7- K

Doesn't Tell The Whole Story. Once We Are Past That Stage. Finding Names That Fit What We Want is What We Try and Do. But Like You Said! Anything Past The First 2 Rounds Is Pure Speculation! At Least Til After Senior Week and The Combine!!

Do NOT draft anything from the U. They haven't work out fully lately.

Agreed With any Of Those 3 as First Round Picks! And Using The First 2 Picks On Defense!

Even Signing Hartline for $5Mil Is Counter Productive!

OK, They sign Hartline For $5M! Who can We Expect To Sign As A Wr? Jennings, Wallace? Are You Expecting Whomever The Fins Pick At Wr!! To Be A Instant #1!!

That Is Where Drafting Bailey! Won't Work! Resigning Hartline!

We Would Need To Draft a #1 Type Wr! and No Real #1 Wr's In The Draft!! You Have Guys Wth The Potential To Be #1's But They Are Not #1 Wr's, Just Yet!

Hartline Was Good At The Price We Were Paying Him!! Let Somebody else Overpay!!

Ireland's future is tied to Tannehill. If Tannehill develops into a great QB. Then he will make Ireland's pick look great. I think his best nuggets so far (picks 3rd and below) have been:

1. Reshad Jones (5th round)
2. Brian Hartline (4th round)
3. Davon Bess (rookie FA)
4. Cameron Wake (Canadian league pick up)

We'll know more about his 2011 and 2012 late picks this year. Remember it took Hartline, Jones, and Bess a couple of years before they showed their value. Clay, Mathews, Vernon, Lamar Miller all show promise but it is to early to tell how good they will be.

You suggested use the 1st 3 picks on defense and address offense in fa, If you do this youre addressing wr and TE in fa.

1st three pick in draft also suggest this defense is more awful than it really is. How many great defenses does Brady put 30pts up on? We held him to 23pts the first game. Brady putting up 28pts on your defense isnt that bad when considering what he's done to even better defenses.

My only savings grace, the way I personally view it, is I sincerely pray Ireland gets it right. Since he's actually the one making the picks and doing free agency. He's the only one that needs to get it right.

We dont get to be held responsible for being wrong when things go south during the 2013 season. We can throw whatever bad s h i t, against the wall we like. Doesnt matter we're right or wrong.

But geesh, I wish we could all personally see what we sound like to eachother. Then we would all have a great laugh and fire eachother as amatuer gm's. LOL

: Dashi | January 01, 2013 at 08:07 PM

In that case I would say our needs are as follows

WR, T.E. and maybe OL

1) LB
4) RB
5) BA......On down

If you want a good laugh just look at the past mock drafts compared to the real drafts. The "experts" were not even close past the 10th pick. What is their percentage of accuracy? Also, I don't hold Ireland accountable for anything prior to Parcells retiring. No one hears knows how much say either had in the process. I start at the last draft when the Tuna was gone.

Hartline isnt a great 4th rd find. Had Turner become anything Hartline most likely wouldnt even stull be on the roster. He maybe a find he was a part of a 4-5 wr set, thats it.

Bess is a chain moving possesion slot wr. Youre stroking yourself to think he's anything more. Any wr that doesnt score tds is hughly replaceble. Maybe not in your fantasy league. But in real world real time reality it they are.

So you want to overpay for Wallace whose numbers were lesser than Hartline this year and he had one of the best QBs throwing him the ball. You don't want to pay Hartine 5 Million a year but you want to pay Wallace 10 Million. Jennings is injury prone and usually plays half the season. I actually don't see a FA WR that is better than Brandon Marshall. Tannehill has developed a good chemistry with Hartline. Why not go with two veteran receivers like Bess and Hartline (pro bowl) and adding a rookie receiver in the 1st round like Hunter or Allen. Then adding a free agent TE which is cheaper and then adding another one like Ertz, Fauria, or Reed. Give Tannehill a chance to develop and build chemistry with his receivers.

Orlando, those are all Parcells picks. Every one. If Ireland is responsible for 2008-2010, he should have been gone with Sparano.

We can spend another 5 years trying to recreate the great Bears defense of the past. But we still won't win without an offense that can score points.

This draft must be dedicated to offense, and go for defense only if there is no quality offensive player at that spot.

But geesh, I wish we could all personally see what we sound like to eachother. Then we would all have a great laugh and fire eachother as amatuer gm's. LOL

Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | January 01, 2013 at 08:22 PM

I have on many occasions for a week or so been posting Bailey as my 2B pick if there. I know you read most posts and usually don't forget. I also have been posting Te'o and now J.Jones at #12 if both gone then trade down to 20 or so and grab X.Rhodes (watch him tonight)

You say how stupid we sound to each other but in the last couple of Yrs. we always drop our mock drafts for c h i t s and giggles on the blog and know and remember that NOT ONE person here had Pat White and for that matter everybody had Gronk, Hernandez and Graham between 2 and 3 with last Yr. ait was almost unanimous we all wanted TY Hilton out of FIU.

Yes there have been misses I raise my hand 1st as the guy who wanted Edmund (Clyde) Gates RD-4 and it fell like I wanted and he bombed although has made some plays in N.Y. while we all whiffed on Brandon Graham who has come on late this Yr. himself. My point is I honestly believe that if a group on here were dropped in a conference room like Ireland and his peeps we couldn't do worse, JMO!

Ireland seems to have gotten a C in the last draft. Tannehill, JMart, good. Egnew probably a bust. Lamar Miller lots of potential but seems Ginn like. The others did not contribute significantly this year except for Marcus Thigpen.

If Marshall and Cutler couldn't get to the playoffs with the fine Chicago D, then he wouldn't have helped us get there either.

Get over him being gone. He is an ego maniac cancer with some fictitious mental issue dr's give you to get sympathy.

You have to admit that for an undrafted free agent rookie Bess was a great find. The fins have yet to draft a receiver in the 1st or 2nd round in the Ireland era but they have done OK considering where they picked up Hartline and Bess. Hartline had 1000 yard and Bess would have reached 1000 had he not missed the last 3 games. I think Bess had over 800 yards. They will spend a pick on a #1 receiver this year or will acquire a FA #1. I think that Hunter and Allen have good potential and as we've been discussing I really like Hopkins. Picking a WR at 12 is probably a reach but I think that is where they will go. Ross has already said that a #1 receiver this year will be the top priority.

Dashi..I disagree respectfully. Sign Hartline for as much as 5 million which sends the message to the team we take care of our own. He came in as a 4th rounder and exceeded expectations. He has to know he isn't a true #1 and make that a cap friendly contract with incentives. A C in the last draft? I'd say B+ at this point until we say can say definitely how Tannehill, Martin, Egnew, Miller and the rest of the draft pan out.

Yesterdays Gone says:
Draft in the second round
2a. Joseph Fauria TE UCLA
The Dolphins need a dominant TE with speed. Fauria
is to slow just like Hopkins. The Dolphins really need to get one of the top free agent receivers and then go after a burner. In addition an athletic TE not Fauria.

Yes Orlando, Bill Parcells did a great job finding Davone Bess. Still waiting on Ireland to unearth anyone.

Orlando Dolphan | January 01, 2013 at 08:31 PM

I'm not going to get back on the Mike Wallace debate but for the last time you guys post things without thinking them through. For starters Wallace was a RFA holdout till right before week-1 missing the first few games then mid-season dealt with an injury to his QB with Leftwitch and the geriatric Charlie Batch at QB before Big Ben came back and Wallace dominated a very good Dallas D. He is widely considered the fastest WR in Football and plays like it. His ability to explode in and out of his breaks is something to see and can go to the house on any given play making Reggie Bush look Incognito slow. To compare him to Hartline is DUMB! DUMB! DUMB! The only pause with Wallace is will he stay on his A game when payed while we all know Jennings will it's the only argument that even swings the debate of who to sign for me either.

2013, we play the afc north and nfc south. We also play the Bengals and Chargers.

In the Afc north, Ben and Flacco arent neccessarily light you up like Tom Brady. In the Nfc South we have Brees and Ryan. Ryan is hot and cold. Then Newton, more of a run that 30pt passing qb.

Dalton isnt that scary, our defense beat him this year. River no longer scares daylights out of anyone either.

So in 2013, we face our usual Brady who didnt completely run roughshod over us. Then Brees. Ryan, Big Ben, Flacco all very good but not nearly as scary as facing Brady ?Brees.

Besides Brady/Brees, there's no qb on the 2013 schedule who really consistenly lights it up. Yet fin4life suggest spend the 1st three picks on defense.

We want to blame Ireland for all the bad picks and give him no credit for the good ones. If you are taking Reshad Jones from him then you have to take Pat White away also. You cannot have it both ways. I do agree that they were trying to build this team in Parcell's antiquated image of smash mouth run the football.

I think that we will have a better idea of how good Ireland is as a GM this year. His 2 number 1 picks after Parcells: Mike Pouncey and Ryan Tannehill, not bad. His second round picks J Mart (will be good) and Thomas has potential (but may be inury prone). We have to give the later picks time to develop. You normally don'd count on 3rd round picks and beyond in year 1 or 2.

I think that most here, like myself, are tired of the Besss, Hartlines, Dansbys. We want GREAT Game changing Players, Stars, a la Bush here, Ed Reed there, RG3 elsewhere. Very exciting Players.

promichael | January 01, 2013 at 08:40 PM

I agree with you about needing burners all over the field but Fauria at 6'7" makes for an inviting redzone target like we haven't had and every team seems to today, just a thought.

I like Egnew. I see a break out season coming.

I would only agree Devon Bess was a find only if a possesion slot wr, who could move the chains, was the final missing piece of our puzzle.

Also, Bess wasnt a find, he's an undrafted rookie fa. They get offer from 5-10 teams then choose where "THEY WANT TO GO".

Draft Manti Te'o, sooner rather than later.

Orlando @8:31.

That is The Only Way I Would Keep Hartline! At The Right Price! And Making Sure S.Bailey Is Not The Wr!

I've Been Leaning On Drafting 2 Wr's! Forget The TE!!

But I Know Drafting 2 WR's is Taking away Picks From Other Needs! And Make The Team Look Real Young!

The Pats Use Their TE's! Because Their WR's Suck!!

Orlando, Dashi Is Not Big On Any FA WR(Agreed)!! But Yes! If Its $5-6 Mil For Hartline! I Would Rather Spend $7-8 On Jennings Or Wallace!

If We Can get Te'o or J.Jones! I see No Reason Not To Go!

1- LB
2a- WR
2b- FS
3a- WR
3b- CB
4- TE
5- RB

Having Explosive Wr's Is More Dangerous Than Having Good TE's!! Difference Between The Pack and The Pats! The Pats Have A Better O-Line So Brady Has More Time! But The Packs Are More Explosive!

Young Wr's That Can Grow With T-Hill! And For Those Who Don't Like Bess!! Bess Can Play Out His Final 2 Years! And The Fins Find Another Wr Later!! But Bess With This Group! Seems Better Than Wallace! Or Jennings, or Hartline!! And All 5 Combined Will Cost Less Than Any Of The Other 3 Per Year!!

Giving The Fins Money To Spend On Other Needs!! Signing FA CB's And OG's!!

The value of Tannehill will be clear by the end of next season. He will have a full year of starting experience and a full training camp as the #1 QB. He needs to show growth, but I believe it won't take much more growth to justify his draft position.

He needs to be a little safer with the ball. He needs to learn to snap fast to catch the D offsides. He needs to learn not to stare down his targets, but that comes with time and he doesn't do it all the time, he often goes through his reads.

Orlando Dolphan | January 01, 2013 at 08:46 PM

Your 100% right the last call till the 2011 draft was squarely on Parcells even though he tried to deflect it by saying in 2010 the Fins would draft guys who could actually play in pads, I'll never forget it because I remember thinking, whose he fooling?? This EGOMANIAC won't let anybody have the final say on the dinner menu much less control of a draft.

Sorry I am just not a big Wallace fan. If he was so great why are the Steelers so willing to let him walk. The Steelers have won 2 superbowls in the Big Ben era so I think they know what they are doing. I have Steeler friends that refer to him as Mike "butter fingers" Wallace.

Look I am not saying that I won't take him on my team but not at 10 million. That means crippling yourself at other positions in order to pay this guy. That would mean giving up Long, Hartline, and Starks and not adding any other FAs. That is Brandon Marshall type money and he is not Brandon Marshall. At 6 milion a year sign him up.

Orlando you won't find any posts where I talk about Ireland and Pat White. I don't like him because he undercut any chance Tannehill had for success by trading away our only true WR and refusing to have any plan in place to replace him.

Colts kept Wayne and drafted offense with their next three picks. That's how you support a rookie. No coincidence they are in the playoffs. You can't take Vernon over Hilton. You can't trade Marshall. And you can't trade up for Daniel Thomas and then take Lamar miller the next season. When he has finally taken TEs or WRs, they have been giant busts (Gates, Egnew, Matthews).

I'm judging him solely on 2011/2012 and that's enough to conclude he sucks. Any involvement he had pre-2011 would only strengthen that idea as it was mostly a drafting disaster.

Steadman Bailey, at this moment, is the = or superior to Wes Welker in the slot.

Don't get cheap on Us.

I got a feeling Hunter will be the Combine climber this Yr. when he drops that 4.3/40 on everybody at 6'3" with some ridiculous vertical jump (jumps like he could leap a house) Just remember when they start the inevitable comparisons to Moss because he does physically resemble that he will fly up boards. I have this feeling that he vaults past Allen who will drop a 4.5/40 and slide some.

I would trade signing Long, Hartline and Starks to actually add someone with some effing speed. Dolphins are the slowest team in the NFL by far.

However, at 10 mill, dolphins could still easily bring back Hartline or Starks.

Keeping Long is stupid. Too expensive, his production has dropped and you are lucky if he plays 12 games.

Brady made Welker great.
Elway made Sharpe great.
Marino made the Marks great.

Some receivers were great on their own, independent of the QB. But many great receivers would not have performed as well with a different QB.

fin4life says:

I agree with you about needing burners all over the field but Fauria at 6'7" makes for an inviting redzone target like we haven't had and every team seems to today, just a thought.
Good thought however the Dolphins must get to the Red Zone first and for that they need a TE who can create separation. Every good offense in the NFL today has a dominant TE. The draft boards are not evaluating TE's or receivers very high so the Dolphins will either have to trade down from #12 or just pick a TE @ #12 in the first round because the need is so great.
