Joe Philbin: Free agency on the table

There is a false narrative in the Dolfan community that because coach Joe Philbin came from the Green Bay Packers, he wants the Dolphins run like the Green Bay Packers, particularly when it comes to building the team.

The idea is that because Green Bay rarely dips toes in free agency, with few exceptions, Philbin wants the same in Miami.

That is not true.

"I'm not opposed to improving the football team in any way shape or form, by any method we can -- whether that's a trade whether that's free agency, draft obviously," Philbin said Monday in his end-of-season press conference. "I'm not opposed to any of that."

Philbin says player acquisition is a "collaborative" effort that includes general manager Jeff Ireland and his staff and Philbin and his staff. So free agency is on the table.

And that ties perfectly with what I tell you in my column today about the Dolphins being willing to attack the high end of free agency this offseason as they have not done since probably 2010.

As I've said before, the man in charge of personnel for the Dolphins will  continue to be general manager Jeff Ireland. Owner Stephen Ross will speak with the media later this week, but a source repeated to me again today that Ireland is absolutely safe in his job. So no change is coming there for this offseason.

This offseason is about improving everywhere -- particularly on offense.

"We certainly need to get better production and performance out of the offensive unit," Philbin said.

The coach wants to see massive improvement in the team's turnover margin. It was minus 10 this year which was in the bottom quarter of the league. And he wants to see more plays on both offense and defense relative to the passing game.

"I think these guys performed well," Philbin said. "We have to do a better job of putting points on the board. This is not a complicated game. We have to do a better job there. Part of the takeway issue is getting interceptions and fumble recoveries. But I don't know it's isolated to the receiver or DB positions.

"We need to address the explosive play element on both sides of the ball. We got to create more, we have to eliminate more from our opponent's play."

Well, if that doesn't speak to receivers (including TEs on offense) and DBs (particularly corners on defense) I don't know who it speaks to.

Among the things Philbin wants to improve is himself.

"I definitely need to improve like anybody else, no question about it," he said. "That's what the offseason is all about. I haven't had time to reflect necessarily going through the exit process today and meeting with the players. Obviously we had a plan in place for this season. I thought it was a good plan. However, obviously you have to make changes and adjustments and learn and make improvements. And we'll do that. We'll listen to the suggestions of some of the guys you work with on a consistent basis and see if they have ideas that may or may not benefit the program."

Improvement is the order of the day all around this franchise, folks. The Dolphins finished 7-9 and out of the playoffs. That's 7-9, 7-9, 6-10, and 7-9 in the last four seasons. And none of those seasons included a postseason berth.

"7-9 is not good enough," Philbin said. "... We have a lot of work to do. That's really where we are."

We have the 12th overall pick. Ireland HAS to nail this draft & pray that Tannehill has an unbelievable off-season & stays healthy next year.

Happy New Year everyone & to all a good night...

.... I know there are no guarantees as far as free agent signings. The big time ones come across as mercenaries, and have a difficult time ever performing up tho their huge contracts. As far as this goes I could care less how much we pay a guy, as long as he contributes to making this team better. I do not have to worry about contracts, it isn't my job. I am concerned with finding a guy who can score touchdowns. That is all. If it the cost makes some uncomfortable..So be it. Most of us would gladly forget a huge contract if said free agent was 14-16 td guy.

This said. I put my support behind Greg Jennings. He isn't a Diva type. For you fiscaly responsible fans. he shouldn't break the bank. and of course, his familiarity with HC Philbin..I don't care that he has some baggage.sign him up.

YG,

There are two things the team could do in FA that would be BIG mistake IMO.

Spend huge money on a WR (the 5 year/$45-50 mil) type of contract. Didn't make us better when Marshall was here and he had a couple of 1,000 yard seasons for us. No improvement in the win column.

The other would be over-paying for Sean Smith. Pretty average player when it comes right down to it. Should be better with his size and athleticism....but he's not. So yeah, he'd be back, pretty much filling a hole, as you've said.

I was all for resigning Sean Smith until yesterday. Again, he reminded me what a soft and scary tackler he was. Then, watching Wes Welker manhandle him on a block just about made me want to puke.

Add this to, "average at best" cover guy, and Im now wondering if its worth to bring him back. I rather have an average cb that's a great tackler and doesnt get mandhandled by Wes Welker as a blocker.

DD,

Would you make Jennings more of a priority than Hartline? I think I would. I'd be happy to have them both on the team and I like Hartline but I think Jennings would bring some things to the team that Hartline doesn't.

Armando: I'm expecting Ross will voice his confidence and support for Ireland in his speech later this week.

Can you ask him what benchmarks he will regard as a success? Is it going 8-8, 9-7 or playoffs? Is another year of missing the playoffs acceptable?

The reason I ask is because none of us really understand his love for Ireland. So I want to know what measurement he'll use to evaluate Ireland's future.

DD, YG, Craig M, fin4life...lotta great comments.

I especially like the idea of having MORE playmakers added.

Welker with NE

Cobb with GB

Morris with Wash

Ray Rice with Balt

Sproles in NO.

The dependable OFF weapons that catch the ball when thrown to. Rarely fall down or fail to get to their spot. That RARELY drop the ball ever for any reason.

We need a person in this role. Bush is ok but we need another player that is more automatic. Bush will have a great play or 5 per game but couple it with a missed handoff, slip down or many tackles for loss.

We need at least one C.J. Spiller/Cobb/T.Y Hilton type. Bush is kind of that guy just takes a little more to get rolling sometimes. Bush creates on his own in space a little less imho.

No knock on Bush as I want him brought back but they need a compliment just like someone needs to take defensive pressure off Wake with pass rush from the other side.

Cheers,

Has Ireland been fired yet?

DD, I'm with you on Jennings. He's my first FA acquisition pick, along with Hartline. I'm petrified of the idea of Bellichick picking up Hartline only to see two former Dolphins torching us.

Craig M...Hell yes. One guy knows how to score td's. The other one knows how to grow a creepy stache'.

Seriously. Know Jennings has been surrounded by very good recievers in Green Bay. But he understands the reciever by comitee concept it appears Philbin favors. It won't be a suprise to him. As far as Hartline goes. If it is between these 2 guys, and that is the only option. I'm going to go with Jennings. To me Hartline is just not enough of a touchdown recieving threat to make a priority over a reciever who is. I think Hartline has a place on the roster, and both guys would be an improvement. But if I had to choose 1..GJ all day.

I dont believe Ross will allow Ireland to do next years draft. He'll be fired well before draft day.

Guys,

If we could make the deal. Would anyone favor completely trading out of the 1st rd for that team's 2014 1st and 2nd rd pick and thier 2013 2nd rd pick?

Basically, that gives us 3 2013 2nd rd picks. Then 2 2014 1st rd picks and 2 2014 2nd rd picks. If we could make that deal with a very bad team all of those picks would be very high ones because they probably dont improve that much in one short season.

Well if Ireland is safe, our return to winning is in jeopardy. Over the yrs I critisized Ireland then decided to give him a chance and the straw that broke the camels back was this past yrs draft. We have 5 picks in the first 3 rounds this yr and if Ireland is the one making the final decision on who we pick, we are in for more of the same... projects, backups and selecting players that could be addressed in later rounds and passing on playmakers that could contribute right away. The level of ineptitude is appalling, and I really can't understand how Ross can't see it, if Ross wants butts in seats on gameday, forget changing the uniforms and logo, try getting some real football people that have an idea of what it takes to build a winning team.

Russel Wilson can do one thing that Tannehill cant. Score points.

Is Polian coming in for an interview?

Guys I just saw on NFL Network that the Jets fired GM Tannenbaum but not only retained Rex but also Sparano laying the blame of the O ineptitude on the GM, WOW!

I as a hater of the puke greeners am pleased at their stupidity but seriously don't get what anybody in there right mind is thinking over there about T.S.

I personally feel the guys a QB killer because while Sanchez isn't great he at least performed under Brian Shottenheimer alot better. By the way Sanchez is reportedly on the block but with that 9 Mil guarantee I think it's the Jets that would have to give up picks to get a taker.

They reportedly are trying to convince Parcells to give it another go around as VP and how fitting would that be with the fat guy running the charge again over there, I guess some people in the AFC East are in worst shape along with asking the Giants permission to talk to scout director Mike Ross (which isn't an all bad idea) maybe Parcells goes back and asks permission to talk to Ireland?

The Bills GM, H.C. and staff all got the ax as well, no surprise! The Bears, Chargers, Cheifs (who apparently are done with Pioli as well) have so far all followed suit as well.

Georgia Tech made a bowl game at 6-7? WTF?

Craig M,

Have you seen the numbers that Marshall put up in Chi-town?? Pretty gaudy! Compared to the TD's he scored while in Miami?

It would seem that Marshall was not the problem and a lack of decent schemes while stuck in Tony S/Henning offensive play design hell coupled with mediocre to borderline bad QB play at times was more to blame than Marshall.

5 million is a pittance for an accomplished WR that (as DD says) score TDS!

Our offense is woeful still and needs more help even than Cameron is getting. I understand that some feel that "you don't need a #1" WR in Philbin's version of the WCO but that is hogwash. You ALWAYS need some sort of a Michael Jordan type to go to when things get thick.

You watch. Last year I was harping no wailing on WR Michael Floyd at #8 while getting QB Wilson later in the draft. After Ariz gets even a decent QB look at how that combo would shake out in 2-3 years.

Value drafting BPA is all about maximizing the draft.

To this day I feel major owner pressure, unprecedented fan pressure and a crafty design to keep his own job ALL contributed to Tannehil at #8 which was higher than he should have gone. He has played ok and outplayed Moore for the job after Garard hurt BUT, only time will tell if he shines bright enough to make us a constant threat.

With greater weapons around him and another year under his belt we can better gauge.

Cheers,

Four losing seasons in a row. Is Jeff Ireland really coming back?

fin4life,

Didn't know the Bills GM got the axe too. Guess there's another team in need of a GM. Maybe either Gene Smith or Aj msith end up there. It's a constant revolving door in Buffalo. Never gets any better in Buffalo. I'd heard Pioli was safe Did things change?

DD, I'd have to look at things a little closer but Jennings may well be my number one FA wishlist as well.

..48-Go.. I would hope that Hartline could become the player here in Miami that those afraid losing him to Hoodie would be. The idea that any player NE gets is going to be much better then where he was before is a testament to the program in NE. It may be a myth, but it is certainly engrained in a lot of Phin fans because of Wes Welker, Rob Ninacampoop.

My point is that if the FO thinks Hartline is a player that may haunt us down the road. They probably see some value in that player. No way would they let any player walk to a division rival if this was the thinking. Now, perhaps the team sees Hartline in a totaly different light. I don't know. I would think if they thought he was going to be a threat in NE, they could certainly coach him up to be the same here.

Great post and happen to agree with you 100% been posting the same thing for weeks now. The draft is stacked especially at DE/OLB, Safety and LB.

# Resign Ireland

# Fire Spo

# Keep Long

# Cut Dansby

We Have the #12 Pick! Yes!

Would've Loved To Be Competitive Yesterday!! But It Happens!!

Can Te'o Fall To Us? Or Ogletree?

We Need More Impact Plays On Defense!! And Which Position Makes The Most Impact On Defense!! LB's!!

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT POSITION IN A 4-3??

TAKE A WILD GUESS!! ONLY 1 OF THESE IN A 4-3!!! Right In The MIDDLE!!

You Got It!! MIDDLE LINEBACKER!!

The Fins Need New Blood!

Who Did Philbin say he expects The Most Improvement from This Offseason! Josh Kaddu!! Yeah, That Guy!! The 1 Guy Who Everyone Thought Was A Bigger Bust Than Egnew!!

Philbin Knows We Need LB's!! That is All That Matters!! Not What Some Fan Thinks!

From The Sound Of It Philbin Doesn't Like Clemons! Either!

The Secondary Needs New Blood! But Not Necessarily The CB's!! And We All Know R.Jones Is Not The Problem!! To Dashi, R.Jones and Resigning Smith, are The 2 Safest Players in The Secondary!! Everyone Else Might Get Cut! Marsha2, DP, NC, JW, and CC!! Keep The SS and The #1b CB!!

Oh Yeah, PHILBIN KNOWS WHAT THE F' HE IS DOING!!

THE FINS FINALLY HAVE A SMART HC!! BEEN AWHILE!

And This Is Not A 1 Man Operation!! Mando Clarified That For Everyone Today!!

"Philbin says player acquisition is a "collaborative" effort that includes general manager Jeff Ireland and his staff and Philbin and his staff. So free agency is on the table."

So It's Not Only Ireland!!! Making The Decisions!! "Ireland & His Staff" AND "PHILBIN & HIS STAFF"!! THE WAY IT IS SUPPOSE TO BE!! SPO IS JUST EGREGIOUS, IN HIS KNOWLEDGE OF THE SPORT!!

Somebody Said It Best Earlier!! Ireland Was Trying To Plug In Pieces To A Shattered Puzzle!!

Well Now!! Ireland And Philbin Are Building The Puzzle Together!! And Philbin Has The Picture Of What The Puzzle Should Like When Completed!! Ireland Is Just Handing Him The Pieces! Working Together! To Reach The Same Goal!!

I gotta go... this signing in with that goofy anti auto response two swirling and hard to read letters every single post is downright stupid!!!

I don't know if something got changed but it used to be that if you signed in and stayed on that you ONLY had to do that after the first initial post so it could identify you.

Is that a new anti weird poster thing Mando????

Cheers,

..Yg. I think your scenario is dependant on what happens in free agency. If we are active during free agency I would say hell yes..Plenty of value in round 2, that would give us 3 picks in a premium round(especially if the trading partner was a top 10 second)..Can we revisit this thought after free agency?

Looks like Peter King had the Dolphins at 4-12 this year too. Both of on that one. That's why I'm not disappointed in what we saw this year. Now if it's 7-9 next year as well...well that's just not good enough. It means that something went terribly wrong and under those circumstances I believe Ireland should lose his job.

ROB,GRAIG M WONT REED ANYTHING THAT LONG.
YOU ARE ONE OF THE BESTS POSTER ON HERE.
(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Looks like King had the Chiefs at 10-6 this year too. What the Hell was he thinking? And the Colts at 5-11. Was he drinking when he made his picks?

Just wanna wish everyone a Healthy and Happy New Year and be careful if you're going out tonight.

GRAIG, YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH A LOSING RECORD?
UNTIL MR.ROSS SHOW THE GARAGE MACHANIC DOOR YOU'LL BE HAPPY.

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Craig M predicted 11-5 LOL

It irks me greatly to see Indy is in a rebuilding year with a new QB, GM and HC (who was absent for most of the season) and still make it to the playoffs. This, after a decade of Manning. This is what really good talent evaluation over the years gets you.

And four consecutive years of 7-9 and 6-10 records is an indictment of our subpar roster acquisition.

Aloco!! Happy New Year to the best damn all Capital Letter blogger on this here Blog!!!...Period!

Kudos to you for staying the course my friend.

I really appreciate the compliment. As always I will try to bring my traveling Buffet of Knowledge to the blog when I can bro.

Cheers and have a Happy New Year with lots of good things to eat!!!!

I think its safe to say we need to draft another QB.

Looks like King had the Chiefs at 10-6 this year too. What the Hell was he thinking? And the Colts at 5-11. Was he drinking when he made his picks?

CRAIG,E WAS DRINKING THE SAME THING THAT KRIS WAS DRINKING WHEN HE SAID DOLPINS WOOD GO 11 AND 5.

The Blog,

Not true, bud. I predicted 4-12.....ask anyone.

ALoco,

DID YOU LEAVE THE BASEMENT WINDOW OPEN AGAIN? OR WAS THE BREEZE WE ALL JUST FELT WAS CAUSED BECAUSE OF THE HUGE OPENING BETWEEN YOUR EARS?

((BUFFET OF EXCESS OD 100 MPH WINDS ARENT ALWAYS HURRICANES))

Dont worry. Irescum is on the 25 yr rebuild plan.

YG4VR @ 4:27: Interesting proposition, but probably a bit too premature to say. Players draft stocks will rise and fall in the coming months and we'll have to see whom we get in FA first.

Craig M is a liar. 11-5 was your prediction.

48-Go,

It doesn't hurt that they ended up with what some termed as a once in a lifetime type QB at #1 overall.

It is sad that the Fins finished higher and thus ended up with Tannehill but dem's da breaks. Philbin will have to play around this sand trap.

Let's hope Tannehill so full of piss and vinegar that he practices ALL summer long. May his upside rise as the rising tide of a QB helps all on offense rise with him.

Cheers,

...I can understand the fans who look at the record, the way we lost yesterday and be dissapointed. 7-9 stinks, no doubt. These fans have every right to question what is going on here, and IMO does not make these individuals less, or more a fan then the next guy.

This said. I thought 6-10 was reasonable. 7-9 exceded my own expectations. I think the season was dissapointing for this reason..We had opportunities to be better, we had an opportunity at one point to be a team that could make some hay. The turning point IMO was the second half of the INDY game. If we win that game, perhaps it is the Phins with a well earned 10-6 record. Although we had some spurts of good play after this game. the way we lost those 3 games after the INDY game where a letdown to me.

I know that people are going to say...what did you really expect? This was a season for evaluation. It would have been 2008 all over. The future looks bright..I'm sure there are more. Anyway. For a time this year it was exciting to be a Dolphin fan. Weather or not any of the above are true. I feel like this team had an opportunity..challenged as it may have been. We just were not quite good enough to get there. nothing more, nothing less.

ALOCO,

DURING POWER OUTAGE THE HUGE COLD OPENING BTEWEEN YOUR EARS WOULD BE A GREAT PLACE TO STORE YOUR FROZEN FOOD.

((BUFFET OF FROZEN FOOD AISLE))

I'm not the blog police but I thought Kris was the 11-5 predictor?

Just ask him, he's a stand up guy if he predicted it, he would let you know.

Cheers,

Yeah, The Blog.....I'm a liar. You caught me red-handed. MORON!!.....

Go ask someone else, so that you can get it confirmed....TWERP!

We got fukkked. The Bills fired Chan Gailey.

Aloco, What's a "DONKY"?
Buffet Of Questions?

At least Rex is still in place.

I see Bill Polian said no thank you to the Jets about their GM opening. Highly doubtful that he'd find the Miami job any more attractive. Polian's getting to old for the grind of being a full time GM role. It's a young man's game....nothing wrong with that.

ALWAYS go by LV. They were dead on, 7.5. I wonder how they do it?

THANK YOU ROB, AND YOUR RIGHT IT WAS KRIS WHO PERDICTED 11 AND 5.
FLIPPER BREED/YG4E/LOL MADE TO MANY PERICTIONS TO FOLLOW, HE CHANGED HIS MIND FROM DAY TO DAY,WHICH IS HIS M.O.

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Mr. Dunphy,

I honestly feel like that is why such bitter grapes from some. It would have been actually easier for some to "live with" a lowly 2-4 win team and say well we had all these issues (New OC, Coach, QB, DC etc) to point to.

The fact that they rose from the ashes and had some spots during the season where they flirted with being a decent playoff contender only to be let back down is why such sorrow and disgust.

I'm with you. They beat the Vegas over/under on wins and have the ability to step forward a rung or two if a few things fall our way in the off season.

Namely getting some more playmakers and having Ryan Tannehill expand on his unexpected rookie start and finishing of an entire season.

Sorry to hear about your back bro. Hopefully you have some Solonpas or 800 milligram pain reliever/muscle relaxer to take.

Guess you will have to start getting Merlot Light!! LOL

Cheers,

Rob in OC: thanks for pulling back from the ledge in utter frustration. You're right about Indy landing Luck.

I wonder if Fisher is kicking himself now for not grabbing RGIII when it was his for the taking.

Major, you might not know this, but I could pull rank on you, if I wanted. Besides Tequila really intoxicates me.

Happy New Years to my fellow bloggers!

Watch some bowl games fellas. Try to scope out who will be the next good to great Fin.

Cheers,

The Dolphins will try to sign free agents! What amazing and exciting news! Boy, I sure didn't see this one coming.

I would like to watch the ND vs Alabama Bowl and bet on ALA

I'm out too guys....have a great New Year's!

48-Go,

No worries man...I've had lots of bitter losses and many chewed nails over the Fins these past 20 years bud. Kinda comes with the Fins landscape these days. Hopefully Philbin can right the ship with some time, acquisitions and coaching.

I would say NO about Fisher regretting the RGIII phenom. One RGIII is already nicked so lets see if he can remain healthy running, ducking, zipping and juking for real estate long term. Secondly, now is when he gets to reap the rewards of that trade in the name of extra firepower to restock his own team over the course of the next 3 years due to the RGIII trade.

From an injury standpoint alone, I say advantage Fisher imho.

Cheers bro,
