Joe Philbin: Free agency on the table

There is a false narrative in the Dolfan community that because coach Joe Philbin came from the Green Bay Packers, he wants the Dolphins run like the Green Bay Packers, particularly when it comes to building the team.

The idea is that because Green Bay rarely dips toes in free agency, with few exceptions, Philbin wants the same in Miami.

That is not true.

"I'm not opposed to improving the football team in any way shape or form, by any method we can -- whether that's a trade whether that's free agency, draft obviously," Philbin said Monday in his end-of-season press conference. "I'm not opposed to any of that."

Philbin says player acquisition is a "collaborative" effort that includes general manager Jeff Ireland and his staff and Philbin and his staff. So free agency is on the table.

And that ties perfectly with what I tell you in my column today about the Dolphins being willing to attack the high end of free agency this offseason as they have not done since probably 2010.

As I've said before, the man in charge of personnel for the Dolphins will  continue to be general manager Jeff Ireland. Owner Stephen Ross will speak with the media later this week, but a source repeated to me again today that Ireland is absolutely safe in his job. So no change is coming there for this offseason.

This offseason is about improving everywhere -- particularly on offense.

"We certainly need to get better production and performance out of the offensive unit," Philbin said.

The coach wants to see massive improvement in the team's turnover margin. It was minus 10 this year which was in the bottom quarter of the league. And he wants to see more plays on both offense and defense relative to the passing game.

"I think these guys performed well," Philbin said. "We have to do a better job of putting points on the board. This is not a complicated game. We have to do a better job there. Part of the takeway issue is getting interceptions and fumble recoveries. But I don't know it's isolated to the receiver or DB positions.

"We need to address the explosive play element on both sides of the ball. We got to create more, we have to eliminate more from our opponent's play."

Well, if that doesn't speak to receivers (including TEs on offense) and DBs (particularly corners on defense) I don't know who it speaks to.

Among the things Philbin wants to improve is himself.

"I definitely need to improve like anybody else, no question about it," he said. "That's what the offseason is all about. I haven't had time to reflect necessarily going through the exit process today and meeting with the players. Obviously we had a plan in place for this season. I thought it was a good plan. However, obviously you have to make changes and adjustments and learn and make improvements. And we'll do that. We'll listen to the suggestions of some of the guys you work with on a consistent basis and see if they have ideas that may or may not benefit the program."

Improvement is the order of the day all around this franchise, folks. The Dolphins finished 7-9 and out of the playoffs. That's 7-9, 7-9, 6-10, and 7-9 in the last four seasons. And none of those seasons included a postseason berth.

"7-9 is not good enough," Philbin said. "... We have a lot of work to do. That's really where we are."

This 2013 is going to be a great year to sign top of the line FAs as many Temas will jettison them and their big contracts in favor of great rookie Players they acquired this year.

Rob, Craig M, DD,

I don't feel you can compare Jennings to Marshall 2 very different animals. I would love to sign him then add another on the cheap WR in FA in an intriguing group that includes Steve Smith (Car.), Donnie Avery, Andrew Hawkins (human video game), Jerome Simpson and even Julian Edelman as complimentary to top WR FA.

If Bush walks and I think the idea is letting Miller be the man here (hits the hole with more authority) then we need a 3rd and 1 type RB which we don't have with Isaac Redman out there to name one while going D in a deep draft for that side of the ball. Outside of WVU WR Steadman and Austin somewhere between 2B or 3A I don't see the value. I like UCLA T.E. Fauria if there in the 4th as well but would look D with those top 3 picks and if Te'o is there I would grab with a deep pool of DE/OLB's in the draft (keep your eyes on Mich. St's Gholston at 6'6"/275) I feel one of the saftey's in RD-2 to pair with Jones would be ideal with either LSU's Reid or TJ McDonald probably still there.

oscar... I would do the same. Hated or Not Satan, er Saban has been there done that and seems to wind up with crazy recruited athletes year in and year out.

I would like to watch Alabama's CB Milliner and the ND TE Eff...

Cheers,

Craig M,

Pioli is not being included by Chiefs owner in H.C. search, the idea being that he's looking big name with no go between with him and the new H.C.

NFL Net. says he's on the outs and could come in the next couple of days.

Also, Rob, watch Alabama's Gs as one of them could be ours at Draft Time.

I would like to watch Alabama's CB Milliner and the ND TE Eff...

Cheers,

Milliner will go higher than 12 maybe Philly which will dump at least one of their big contract CB's.

I would love Te'o at 12 (if still there) Eric Reid (S.S.) or TJ McDonald (your neck of the woods) followed by one of the DE's 2B there is a deep group at the position this Yr. Eiffert isn't wowing with speed but has the hands and you know Fauria at UCLA should be there around RD-3 very similar player without the fan fare.

fin4life @ 5:15. Lotta good thoughts.

Just for the record I never compared Marshall to Jennings aside from the fact that they are both #1 WR types.

They are at different stages and one has much more baggage but maybe has more tools.

Either way, Marshall is solidly in Chicago now and won't be revisited.

Jennings should be very much in the mix with his Philbin ties.

I think Fauria has merit as a TE as well.

Steadman and Austin have some great movement skills and I feel we are sorely missing that type of player on OFF and ST.

Hard for me to look at the name Gholston and not think of the Jets bust of a DE. lol

If they could add Reid and some of the aforementioned players the Fins would be better for sure.

Cheers,

..Rob in OC..Merlot light..That is funny!! (BTW it was a case of Bandol that was a gift from the distributor)

fin4life...What do you think is a fair price for Harltline? IMO, if we could get a Jennings. I think Hartline would be a suitable #2, then look to the second round-third round of the draft for a rookie perhaps a tight end.

Rob,

Been a while happy holidays Bro!

Who's the most explosive receiver in College this year, Tarrence Williams? Well, if they cannot sign premier Ts and Gs FAs next year, then we have to bypass Tarrence and Draft some OL help. We MUST protect Tannehill or whoever is back there and allow them to throw to their possibilities.

oscar... no doubt the guards at Bama are rock solid...especially Chance.

Chance W. would relegate John Jerry to a back-up/swingman type or trade bait if there would be any market for him.

Good stuff.

Cheers,

fin4life,

Yessiree! Hat tip bro. Happy New Year to you and yours. I have been busy as heck with life in general. This slight holiday break allows me to catch up.

I always try to read what I can but my posting has waned in 2012. As time marches on maybe I will garner my time back.

Glad to see you and many of the old schoolers still on and tickling the keyboards of debate.

Cheers,

And who, exactly, elected you to some position of authority on this blog or how to "navigate" it?

You're just another schmuck here. And I'll respond to any poster or anytopic however I see fit. Understand, junior?

DD,

Damn distributors and their heavy cases!! :)

Hope you will be on the mend soon friend.

Jennings or Wallace, Hartline, Bess and (Keenan Allen, Justin Hunter, Steadman or Austin) would be MUCH more dynamic than this year. It looks like Binns or Mathews may stay as developmental WR as well.

Cheers,

DarrylDunphy | December 31, 2012 at 05:25 PM

I have no problem with your idea here we seem lock-n-step with our views regarding FA and the draft. I would try and sign Hartline to a 4 to 4.5 a Yr. base but the worry is he's looking for a bigger base and then we would have to wait and see what he gets offered in the open market (I feel his agent if rumor true is selling him a bag of goods but stranger things have happened it's why I posted some possible on the cheap WR's for you)

In all honesty if at 2B we see Steadman on the boards and Ireland doesn't pull the trigger I will be very disappointed. Given the wide variety of options we have should be an interesting Off-Season and we will see how much of an influence the new Coaching staff has.

The thing that I guess will start the domino affect regarding both FA and the draft will be the demands of J.Long because if to high then we maybe forced into looking Tackle at 2A with our Coaching staff very familiar with the 2 out of Tex. A&M and RT Matthews probably still on the boards.

..ROB in OC..Thanks Bro!! Buisiest night of the year, and I'm on the DL..

I'm glad you are here, because I want to debate Keenan Allen with you.. I may be nitpicking, and as a disclaimer I only watched one Cal game(I had seen him mocked to us earlier this year, so I was interested)..I was not impressed by Allen as a possible top 15 pick. Again it was one gam, so by admission it is hardly anough of a sample to have an opinion that could not be changed. The other issue is his history of injury..Ankle surgery in 2011, another one this year that forced him to miss time..Is he an injury plagued guy, or is this no big deal...What about him do you like that I should check out?

Mando and everyone else,

They're going to keep Ireland? What has he built? A losing team. Once again we have losing team. That's all we have. Ireland must go or the rest of the fans go. Who's going to buy all the empty seats next year?

How about trading draft picks for Philip Rivers? I think he'd be great with our OL.

if hartline wants big base money...Let him walk without hesitation, there are other options out there that could suit miami at the #2 reciever position...

I think even bush knows his time in miami is all but over after listening to his presser...thanks for playing as a dolphin reggie but no thanks to the $$$ you expect to be payed here in miami...

Long is too injury proned to even consider top dollar on resigning..franchise tag is more likely though if they dont indeed let him go...

Rob @5:37,

If Hunter fell to us in RD-2 he would be a very intriguing guy have seen him and looks like a Moss clone who could high jump out of a building.

....Wow, I just read an updated mock where we take TE'O @ 12...The author of the mock then said we would release Dansby..Was it Dashi??????

IMO TE'O is the best player at his position in this draft. It is like the Andrew Luck syndrome for his detractors. They seem to have to find reasons to downgrade instead of just watching the kid make plays.. Look at London Fletcher..That guy was all over the field last night. Does he have pure straight line speed? No, but he sure does have instincts, he can sure play the freekin position. I don't know if TE'O will be available for us. He is the type of difference maker we need..Playmaker!!

Its going to be an empty stadium again next year. Ross doesnt care about winning or about his customers, the fans. keeping Ireland is like a restaurant continuing to serve poison. The fans are leaving in droves.

Nobody likes a loser.

Manto Te'o is the next Jr. Terrific instincts for the ball. Nab immediately.

Teo is slow, will never be able to cover in the NFL. Watch him fall by draft day.

DD,

Its a no brainer, T'eo is head ans shoulders above the the rest of the class at his mlb position. He has instincts, a great tackler, and sure hands for picks.

We need SMART LB's deperately. 8 of 10 of Brady's passes were to Hernandez. Yet it never occured to any of our lb's to jam him at the line to disrupt the timing. These were quick timing passes Brady was throing to Hernandez.

Teo is not what we need . We desperately need a playmaker...someone who can pile up TD's. And thats a QB, WR, TE or RB. Teo, like Jake Long wont make a difference.

Weell, Ranger, if he can't cover in the NFl, we'll cover for him. We just want him to go after that ball. You dig?

We want the ball. First.

We NEED WR, TE and CB more desperately than anything else.

Scotty,

Most of us are aware of our needs. But it doesnt mean we overdraft players just for the sake of what we need.

Many of these player are better than what we have, and that's it. Its very questionable any of them are 1st year pro bowlers.

Draft a qb? please go look in the mirror and tell yourself youre kidding. After Geno Smith its close to bust city. Tannehill would easily be the 2nd qb taken if he were in this 2013 draft.

Scotty,

Also, Teo helps shores up the defense. We would have two 2nds, two 3rds, and fa to add "POINTS" on offense.

..Scotty..TE'O is a playmaker. And a leader. Something this team desperatley needs. A voice that leads fist by his play on the field. I think he is the type of player that inspires his teamates to elevate their play just by the nature of how he plays. It is evident by watching ND games this year. Without him, they would be nowhere near the Championship game. I do not think this can be debated.

As for offensive playmakers..We all agree we need upgrades in this area. But @ 12 what offesnive player(playmaker) is a better choice then TE'O should he be available? I do not think there is one even close.

Jeff's acorn philosophy is a fine approach for 10-15% of the players you acquire. He abused it and applied it to 85% of his players.

Less see if I can convince "Scotty and Ranger" about the necessity to have Te'o here. Dansby and his huge salary will be gone. How about that!

Tannehill? He wouldnt go in the first 3-4 rds in 2013. He's terrible. Worse then Henne IMO.

FLIPPER BREED, ME THINKS IT'S THE CORN BEEF CACH WHO SHOULD HAVE MADE DESISION TO JAM THE TE AT THE LINE OF SCRIMAGE.

(BUFFET KNOWLEDGE)

DD,

WOW, MAN! I've never seen you spend this much time on the blog. You're usually to busy with your restuarant. LOL...

The QB CLass of 2012 has been the best in the History of the NFL. Forget it this year.

M. Te'o will be a monster in the NFL like Darryl said everybody is looking for the chinks instead of focusing on the ability. If he's there at 12 you all know and have known for sometime how I feel about the addition. We then move Dansby back to OLB and the team is alot better for it. I feel that Misi could go back to DE or at lest give it a look he played there in College at 270, no reason he couldn't be a rotation guy for us making us at the very least quicker up front.

ALoco,

Thats why you need smart players. They dont need permission or depend on thier coaches to tell them to do smart things. They see what needs to be done and do it.

..YG..I jacked up my back yesterday, spent a better part of the night at the ER..I'm stuck in bed..No better way then passing the time then at Ye' ole blog.

We need SMART LB's deperately. 8 of 10 of Brady's passes were to Hernandez. Yet it never occured to any of our lb's to jam him at the line to disrupt the timing. These were quick timing passes Brady was throing to Hernandez.

OMFG Aloco with a football related question, And a Good one, YG4E, What say you, Should'nt the coaches been the ones to have made that happend?

No doubt about it, ALoco. But Philbin, for this Game, seemed somewhat, preoccupied.

fin4life @ 6:13 pm,

All great reasons to draft T'eo. Not only does he add an impact starter to the defense. He instantly upgrades depth at other positions too.

DD,

Sorry to hear about your back. I hope it quickly gets better. But, on the otherhand, I knew that youre usually far too busy to spend this much time on the blog.

Im sure you left someone with capable hands in charge of the restuarant while you mend.

There is no player on O that I would take at 12 over Mantei Te'o should he fall to that pick, it isn't even close!

..(.)(.) MaGee. Clever. I hope the sequel doesn't suck.

LB Aaron Curry was drafted 4th overall in the 2009 draft. Everyone was high on him. He was a bust. So don't go overboard on Teo just yet.

ALoco,

Im making my famous New Years stew right now. It consists of smoked ham, smoked turkey wings, split peas, blackeyed peas, fresh green beans, baby carrots, baby whole potatoes, whole stewed tomatoes, and fresh pearl onions.

I will serve it over Uncle Bens rice. Gotta have the blackeyed peas for New Year's good luck. Maybe I'll send bowls of it to our Dolphins players. LOL...

LOOK FOR FLIPER BREED/YG4E/LOL TO SAY WE NEED A WIDE RECIEVER TOMMARROW.

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Wowowowowo Ireland is Safe and so another year of crap to come...lets see 7 wins this year, and previous three years 6 wins each year....Ireland what a resume.....

Oh, God, it's already "expert draft analysis" time on this board.

Guess I'll make some popcorn and laugh.

Ranger,

Aaron Curry wasnt a mlb he was an olb. He was looked upon for tackling and qb sacks that never materialize. Zero comparison to T'eo.

..YG..Thanks for the shout..Dinner sounds great, enjoy.

Happy New Year to everyone!

YG4E/FLIPPER/LOL, THAT SOUNDS GREAT, MAYBE YOU SHOULD SEND SOME TO OUR CORN BEEF COACH AND THE LEFT-OVERS TO OUR GARAGE MACHANIC.

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDE)
BTW HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Lets see doing the same thing over & over and expecting a different result....Nope and so may Jeff Ireland & his loyal loosing owner Ross leave Miami on a one way ticket.....but no that won't happen, oh my how can it....Ross loves to see this franchise loose loose and loose.....go back to real estate as a football franchise ownership is obviously a huge mistake...be a man and admit you have messed up royally with Ireland.

Exactly draft analysis with Jeff Ireland at the helm, now that is depressing AGAIN.....oh wait maybe he will draft a really good player and then release a key component that would assist that pick, ie. draft Tannehill but drop Marshall.....mmmmm lets buy a benz and then take the engine out....

Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | December 31, 2012 at 06:16 PM

Aside from giving us a PHENOM MLB that can cover knock the speed he has if you will but if you've seen him play like Zach in terms of instinctive in pass game to go with fireball plugger in the middle, TE'O, TE'O, TE'O!!!
