Joe Philbin: Free agency on the table

There is a false narrative in the Dolfan community that because coach Joe Philbin came from the Green Bay Packers, he wants the Dolphins run like the Green Bay Packers, particularly when it comes to building the team.

The idea is that because Green Bay rarely dips toes in free agency, with few exceptions, Philbin wants the same in Miami.

That is not true.

"I'm not opposed to improving the football team in any way shape or form, by any method we can -- whether that's a trade whether that's free agency, draft obviously," Philbin said Monday in his end-of-season press conference. "I'm not opposed to any of that."

Philbin says player acquisition is a "collaborative" effort that includes general manager Jeff Ireland and his staff and Philbin and his staff. So free agency is on the table.

And that ties perfectly with what I tell you in my column today about the Dolphins being willing to attack the high end of free agency this offseason as they have not done since probably 2010.

As I've said before, the man in charge of personnel for the Dolphins will  continue to be general manager Jeff Ireland. Owner Stephen Ross will speak with the media later this week, but a source repeated to me again today that Ireland is absolutely safe in his job. So no change is coming there for this offseason.

This offseason is about improving everywhere -- particularly on offense.

"We certainly need to get better production and performance out of the offensive unit," Philbin said.

The coach wants to see massive improvement in the team's turnover margin. It was minus 10 this year which was in the bottom quarter of the league. And he wants to see more plays on both offense and defense relative to the passing game.

"I think these guys performed well," Philbin said. "We have to do a better job of putting points on the board. This is not a complicated game. We have to do a better job there. Part of the takeway issue is getting interceptions and fumble recoveries. But I don't know it's isolated to the receiver or DB positions.

"We need to address the explosive play element on both sides of the ball. We got to create more, we have to eliminate more from our opponent's play."

Well, if that doesn't speak to receivers (including TEs on offense) and DBs (particularly corners on defense) I don't know who it speaks to.

Among the things Philbin wants to improve is himself.

"I definitely need to improve like anybody else, no question about it," he said. "That's what the offseason is all about. I haven't had time to reflect necessarily going through the exit process today and meeting with the players. Obviously we had a plan in place for this season. I thought it was a good plan. However, obviously you have to make changes and adjustments and learn and make improvements. And we'll do that. We'll listen to the suggestions of some of the guys you work with on a consistent basis and see if they have ideas that may or may not benefit the program."

Improvement is the order of the day all around this franchise, folks. The Dolphins finished 7-9 and out of the playoffs. That's 7-9, 7-9, 6-10, and 7-9 in the last four seasons. And none of those seasons included a postseason berth.

"7-9 is not good enough," Philbin said. "... We have a lot of work to do. That's really where we are."

Are there more than five people left on this planet who know the difference between "loose" and "lose" and how to SPELL THE DAMN WORDS CORRECTLY??

I had never checked Te'o until Today. Nab first, nab. I've seen many great Players both on TV and in person and I have acquired the ability to be able to differentiate any to them. This one is a playmaker on D, a la Ray Lewis.

I've had a 16 Pd. Pork Picnic in the oven slowly roasting for a little over 6 Hrs. now. For the last 2 hours I pull it out for a few minutes every 30 min. to inject it with Mojo Criollo to ensure it stays juice and doesn't dry up.

A few cases of Sam Adams with a little over half a case of Black Label I've been sitting on and should be good times when Fam. and friends start to arrive.

I have some old grapes here to welcome in the New Year in the Cuban tradition. Not sure if they are Sour.

Ok Girls, I'am out for the night, Wish you all a safe and happy New Year.

Miami Dolphins WR selections since 2000:

2000: None
2001: (1) Chris Chambers (2nd Rd)
2002: (1) Sam Simmons (5th Rd)
2003: (1) JR Tolver (5th Rd)
2004: None
2005: None
2006: (2) Derek Hagam (3rd Rd), Aromashodu (7th Rd)
2007: (1) Ted Ginn Jr (1st Rd)
2008: None
2009: (2) Patrick Turner (3rd Rd) B Hartline (4th Rd)
2010: None
2011: (1) Edmund Gates (1st Rd)
2012: (2) Cunningham (6th Rd), Matthews (7th Rd)

So in total:
1st Rd: 1
2nd Rd: 1
3rd Rd: 2
4th Rd: 2
5th Rd: 2
6th Rd: 1
7th Rd: 2

Meanwhile at Joe Philbin's old squad, who we want to emulate...wide receivers taken since 2000 by Green Bay:

2000: (2) Anthony Lucas (4th), Charles Lee (7th Rd)
2001: (1) Robert Ferguson (2nd Rd)
2002: (1) Javon Walker (1st Rd)
2003: (1) Carl Ford (7th Rd)
2004: None
2005: (2) T. Murphy (2nd Rd), Craig Bagg (6th)

2008: (2) J Nelson (2nd Rd), Brett Swain (7th Rd)
2009: None
2010: None
2011: (1) Randall Cobb (2nd Rd)
2012: None

So in total, for Green Bay since 2000:
1st Rd: 1
2nd Rd: 6
3rd Rd: 0
4th Rd: 3
5th Rd: 0
6th Rd: 1
7th Rd: 4

Miami took 11 wide receivers in the last 13 drafts, Green Bay 15 wide receivers. Apart from sheer quantity, the biggest difference is where Green Bay chose to invest its resources. We went late and between 2000 and 2011, only two receivers that we drafted lasted longer than two seasons! (Chambers, Hartline). If Miami wants to be Green Bay, they need to draft accordingly.

Typo on Edmund Gates...4th Rd for him

As in its ok to lose loose p u s s y?

Talk is cheap. Last chance, Mr. Ireland. Get us what we need to win or we'll get us a new GM.

You mean Ireland wasn't part of the black Monday firings?

This team won't get my respect again until they start a season 8-0. Anything less than that will probably result in another losing season.

Been saying this for three years. You can make all your lists of who we should go after. The fact is many of these players do not want to come to Miami and play for these guys.

You have to have a willing partner and I dont think many players see Miami as a positive carer move. Big Miami fan, but we have really created a bad front office image and Ross cant figure that out.

Time will tell, but I bet we are sitting here next year making the same lists. I'm going to keep it real till they prove me wrong.

The draft is where this group has to hit the home run this year. Those guys have no choice but to come to Miami.

Go Dolphins!! Not going to get my hopes up on Free Agents. They really need to sign a top notch receiver, but TE might be the more pressing need.

I have some old grapes here to welcome in the New Year in the Cuban tradition. Not sure if they are Sour.

My wife had me buy those earlier oscar, the red ones at Publix are sweet as hell.

Who is Derek Hagam?

TonyCane | December 31, 2012 at 06:52 PM

In other words if we go the route we should have 5 players at the position by 2024??

How is Ireland not fired?? That makes no sense.

Who is Derek Hagam?

JackSparrow | December 31, 2012 at 07:01 PM

He played for the Arisoma St. Moon Devils I believe?

Based on that chart at least by the time we have our 5 WR's set Tannehill should be a Seasoned vet going into the 2024 Season.

We all hate the jets. But al least they try. 4 + yrs ago they traded up for Sanchez. In 4 yrs two AC championship games. It fell apart and they immediately fire tannenbaum because he didn't have any talent around the QB. However we keep Ireland. No wr, terrible o line, no te, no secondary. And QB u can't even judge because he had no weapons. Go figure.

TonyCane | December 31, 2012 at 06:52 PM

Sorry didn't mean to poke fun at your chart, I was being sarcastic about those that feel we should wait and draft our guys while forgoing the FA's available. It's a crap shoot and the Pack had Ron Wolf/Ted Thompson making their picks while we had a combo of Wannstedt/Speilman/Mueller/Saban/Parcells and now Ireland yikes!

Happy New Year Pal!

Its Derek Hagan, not Hagam.

Hagan was supposed to be one of the fins next great wr's. Never materialized, just another bum late rd bust.

Derek Steven Hagan, Jr. (born September 21, 1984) is an American football wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He played college football at Arizona State. Hagan has also played for the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills.

That was on Saban, that pick. In his Defense Hagan at that time was one of the all time leading pass catchers in PAC-10 History at that time or something of the nature but then again isn't that the story with Kaep College WR R.Matthews in Nevada as well.

Don't care who it is, I only go for Top 10, like Pouncey, Tannehill. Ireland has the weapons to trade up.

Seems we're pretty good with drafting 3rd rd bust wr's. Pat Turner anyone?

Happy New Year! Everyone!

May We All Achieve What We Want! (Even The Trolls!!)

Since 2012 Is Done With! And This Era Has Ended!! (According To The Maya!) May We Welcome In The Rebirth Of Our Miami Dolphins!!

Guys The Road Was ROUGH!! It Almost Seem Like It Will Never End!! But Dashi Is Happy To Say We Have Reached The End Of The Tunnel!! Now On To The Top Of The Mountain! The Zenith!!

May God Bless All!!

And Those That Don't Believe In God!! Let The Universe Bless You!!

Well Happy New Year to you all gonna get going on the Black Label, catch you all 2013!

Everyone got fired but Irescum? TOO FUNNY!

And Those That Don't Believe In God!! Let The Universe Bless You!!

Dashi | December 31, 2012 at 07:19 PM

Science Bless to those as well!

-Let Jake Long walk(as long as he doesn't hurt something when he does)
-Resign Sean Smith, Hartline, Reggie Bush, Randy Starks, Anthony Fasano and Matt Moore for the right price
-Sign Greg Jennings WR and Jared Cook TE
-Restructure Karlos Dansby to a 3 year deal that is more cap reasonable
1. Teo if available(doubtful...but move Dansby to OLB). If no other stud if available, trade down a few spots for another 2nd rounder and draft the best WR or CB.
2a. CB or WR
2b. Pass rusher(Vernon and/or Shelby will hopefully contribute also)
2c. LB or CB if no Teo in the 1st round and we traded down
3a. RT
3b. RG

That gives us:
QB: Tanny, Devlin
RB: Bush, Thomas, Miller, Lane
WR: Jennings, Hartline, Bess, Rookie, Matthews, Binns
TE: Cook, Fasano, Clay, Egnew
OL: Martin, Incognito, Pouncey, Rookie, Rookie

DE: Wake, Rookie, Vernon, Shelby
DT: Starks, Soliai, Odrick, Randall
LB: TEO?, Dansby, Burnett, Kaddu(I think this guy is going to be good), Misi, Trusnik,
CB: Rookie, Smith, Patterson, Rookie?(McCann, Stanford, or Carroll)
SS: Jones, developemental rookie
FS: Clemons, Culver, Wilson

If it were only this easy!

Ireland HAS to nail this draft or I say he's wearing cement shoes!

oscar is going to spend New Years Eve on the Dolphin blog....

Ireland will be fired on Friday!!

Yeah, I have never believed in a Higher Power than Us. How about that!

We, are the Highest Powers in this Universe. Great responsability on Us.

Yes. Yo, Tu, El, Nosotros, Vosotros y Ellos.

most important off season ever for fins. sad to know ireland will be doing it. lets hope he gets lucky. pats just laughed at us sunday and im glad they showed us we are light years behind them, maybe we will actually do something about it now

Well, now is as good a Time as Any. God has never existed as an Entity, much less Higher than any. It has ALWAYS been Us, Highest in the Universe for, We, are the Firsts.

Don't fukk around with me here, for I could forecast what will happen in the coming Year.

Happy new year all!
looking forward to free agency and seeing who we retain and who wants to stay here or go elsewhere to try make more money.

Our free agency should consist of Mike Wallace and Umenyiora......in that order! the rest of our needs should be added through the draft

Are you saying an "INTELLIGENTLESS UNIVERSE" 1st created it intellegentless self and then created us whom also is of even less intelligence?

If you really believe that with straight-face I see why you are called "OSCAR". You could very easily win one with that actung job.

Any thoughts on Teo?

I hope everyone had a Happy Christmas and will have a Merry New Year!

God had no part in creating the Universe, YG. He came later. Stephen Hawkings and I share the same thought.

For all of you whom are not of the heterosexual persuation.

Merry Gay Day! Are You Happy Now Oscar?

Now, I could go into the Fiscal Cliff effects, if you'all want it...

Im sure both Stephen Hawkings and yourself, got that straight from God Himself. Correct?

God is Construct of Man.

Chances that these old coots will be here at 11:59 Tonight to ring in the New Years.......

You Direlects enjoy yourselfs. You all deserve each other.

The playoffs should be the goal EVERY year. Taking the steps to protect 'worst case scenario' is one of the things that may prevent a GM from losing his job.

Guys, I think the Dolphins not making the playoffs this year is the best thing for this team long term.
Posted by: Craig M | December 28, 2012 at 10:19 AM
Craig M.....
You can UNDERSTAND how these TWO post by YOU are a COMPLETE CONTRADICTION to each other...right??????
Posted by: Kris | December 28, 2012 at 12:05 PM

Classic...Proof this guy is a real idiot...LOL!!!

Does God exist? Certainly. Anything that Man constructs in his Imagination truly exists(although not here but in the Metaphysical World)(and He CAN make Miracles). Now, is God higher than Us? Of course not, We, constructed Him.

Outtasite, eh? Doesn't mean is not the Truth.

Oscar You Are Just Beginning To Understand.

Usted Tambien Es Ó Puede Ser, El Dashi!!

Many Teachers Have Come And Gone!! But The Message Is Always The Same!!

We Are GOD(S)!!

Take Words Into Context!

What Is A Lord?

What Is A Master?

What Is A God?

What Is A Dashi?

OK, Dashi Is Getting To Deep and This Is A Football Blog!! Some are Not ready For The Soup Stock!

If One Subject Is More Touchier Than Race Or Politics!! Its Religion!! Telling People That The Way They Believe! Is Wrong!! Is A Taboo Subject!! A Big No No!!

Dashi Himself Doesn't Believe In Religion!! Dashi Believes In Himself!! Dashi Believes In God!!

(Please, Don't Take That Line As A Sign Of Arrogance!! The Last Thing I AM Is Arrogant!!)

With That Said, May I Bless You All A Happy New Year!!

Craig M is a tool. Marino wears nice suits tool. You have no class. Tool.

Jeff's acorn philosophy is a fine approach for 10-15% of the players you acquire. He abused it and applied it to 85% of his players.

Posted by: Ranger | December 31, 2012 at 06:08 PM

Acorn philosophy? Don't know about your percentages but as most know, the acorn thing has been Ireland's problem from day one. He seems to think he knows more than anyone else. When every draft report says that (for example) D Thomas was slow and has a upright running style. As in this will get you hurt in the NFL. But yet Ireland traded up for Thomas.

Of course this is only one example but a good one. We can only hope that Philbin knows more about football than Ireland and can influence personnel decisions. I for one have no faith in Jeff Ireland and make NO appologies for it.

Telly Savalas is the one true Lord and Savior. All other are FALSE IDOLS! Honor and obey LORD SAVALAS and allow his Healing Oils to ANOINT you!

Forget draft reports. No draft report had Arian Foster as a high pick, he was projected 6th, and Thomas was rated much higher than him.

Drafting is part skill, part luck, because too many prototype players fail.
