Joe Philbin: Free agency on the table

There is a false narrative in the Dolfan community that because coach Joe Philbin came from the Green Bay Packers, he wants the Dolphins run like the Green Bay Packers, particularly when it comes to building the team.

The idea is that because Green Bay rarely dips toes in free agency, with few exceptions, Philbin wants the same in Miami.

That is not true.

"I'm not opposed to improving the football team in any way shape or form, by any method we can -- whether that's a trade whether that's free agency, draft obviously," Philbin said Monday in his end-of-season press conference. "I'm not opposed to any of that."

Philbin says player acquisition is a "collaborative" effort that includes general manager Jeff Ireland and his staff and Philbin and his staff. So free agency is on the table.

And that ties perfectly with what I tell you in my column today about the Dolphins being willing to attack the high end of free agency this offseason as they have not done since probably 2010.

As I've said before, the man in charge of personnel for the Dolphins will  continue to be general manager Jeff Ireland. Owner Stephen Ross will speak with the media later this week, but a source repeated to me again today that Ireland is absolutely safe in his job. So no change is coming there for this offseason.

This offseason is about improving everywhere -- particularly on offense.

"We certainly need to get better production and performance out of the offensive unit," Philbin said.

The coach wants to see massive improvement in the team's turnover margin. It was minus 10 this year which was in the bottom quarter of the league. And he wants to see more plays on both offense and defense relative to the passing game.

"I think these guys performed well," Philbin said. "We have to do a better job of putting points on the board. This is not a complicated game. We have to do a better job there. Part of the takeway issue is getting interceptions and fumble recoveries. But I don't know it's isolated to the receiver or DB positions.

"We need to address the explosive play element on both sides of the ball. We got to create more, we have to eliminate more from our opponent's play."

Well, if that doesn't speak to receivers (including TEs on offense) and DBs (particularly corners on defense) I don't know who it speaks to.

Among the things Philbin wants to improve is himself.

"I definitely need to improve like anybody else, no question about it," he said. "That's what the offseason is all about. I haven't had time to reflect necessarily going through the exit process today and meeting with the players. Obviously we had a plan in place for this season. I thought it was a good plan. However, obviously you have to make changes and adjustments and learn and make improvements. And we'll do that. We'll listen to the suggestions of some of the guys you work with on a consistent basis and see if they have ideas that may or may not benefit the program."

Improvement is the order of the day all around this franchise, folks. The Dolphins finished 7-9 and out of the playoffs. That's 7-9, 7-9, 6-10, and 7-9 in the last four seasons. And none of those seasons included a postseason berth.

"7-9 is not good enough," Philbin said. "... We have a lot of work to do. That's really where we are."

Can we realistically say after another 7-9 season that we have our QB of the future? I look at the other rookie QB's that went in the draft and I feel we ended up with the worst one of the bunch. We could have had Wilson much later and used that 6th pick on a skill position or a defensive playmaker like Kuechley. The sad truth is that Ireland has done nothing to improve this team in five seasons and he should not get a pass because he has a rookie coach and QB. There is not enough talent on this team after five years of flipping over rocks and picking acorns. This last game shows us how far we are from the elite in the NFL. There is no sugar-coating 28-0. Ireland is going to get another chance no matter how loud I yell, so I am hoping that he takes advantage of the picks and money, but history has shown that he is not good at dealing with salaries or picks/free agents. I like Philbin, but he was clearly outcoached and outflanked by Belicheat yesterday.

After watching Tannehill no team would give even a 5th rd pick for him. His top upside is a mediocre backup and the Dolphins need to draft another QB and hopefully it wont be Ireland doing the drafting. Happy New Year!

I wasted so much of this year with you retards that I might as well spend the last 15 mins.

You're going too far in your criticism of Tanne. Tanne played like a man the whole year. That is the most important thing. Let the other positions start pulling thier weight!

We are so bad my life is not worth living. Everything about life sucks, and it is Jeff Irelands fault.

Let's commit mass suicide tomorrow.

I think it is just your life that is not worth living.

Come swallow my load and drown your sorrows, again.

I just finished splitting IrishOak. I will split it again when I wake up in the morning.

oscar canosa,
When you see the doctor please tell him Feliz Ano Nuevo from me.

Jeff Ireland is not going anywhere, so can we get over it and move on. For better or worse he will be here in April. Bill

Jeff Ireland can stay but he needs to learn something:
When he lowballs a free agent and the free agent decides to sign with a winning team for more money Ireland did not help us, all he did was jerk us off. We still have the same need and there is one less player available to fill it.

New logo go back to the 1984 best logo ever......

Go back to the 1984 logo...

Simple Formula for Free Agency:
1. Commission a college kid at MIT or CalTech to tell you the money that every free agent can expect from a winning team. (Give the kid a $50,000 stipend for the info).
2. Take the amount that the player can get from a winning team and add $1million to it.

A 'Free Agent' is 'Free' to choose to play for a winning team (like SF, SEA, GB, Hou, NE, Indy, Den etc)

Jim Lehman.
From Lehman Brothers?

FA's with a choice dont want to join the lowly Fins.

You mean some 'FreeAgents' don't have a choice of where they play?

For The 100th Time:
Tanne is the Phins QB.
Move On.
No one is being brought in to compete.
And we don't need a QB competition anyway. Tanne acts like a man and that is enough in these times.

Lincoln Continental @ 1:00am'
Now I get it. Very good comment!
The Free Agents with a 'Choice' are the ones signed in the first 4-6 hours after free agency begins. The ones signed by dinner time the following day may have held out for an extra $100-$200K.
The balance of unsigned free agents after that are known as, "Acorns"; unemployed former NFL players that will sign with the first team that calls, for the minimum, and then in the case of Phins immediately be thrust into the top of the depth chart.

If Lincoln Continental is here than my best friends oscar canosa, Aloco, Dashi & Kris cannt be too far away.
Hey buddies: come out come out wherever you are

Ha Ha stupid Dolphin's fans are so stupid!

Top line free agents no sign here.

Only acorns sign here.

Acorn belong on end of wang not on top of depth chart.

Ha Ha.

I just took a crap the size of New Jersey!!!

Holy Freaking Cow!!!

I feel like dancing :)

Peyton Manning, Matt Flynn, and Jeff Fisher all had choices and went elsewhere. Philbin had only one HC offer.....

Lincoln Cadillac Phuc all the same lonely drunk blogger.

Philbin only had one offer that is true. He was our 4th choice after Cowher, Gruden & Fisher.
That being said Joe Philbin has proven himself to be a steady, thoughtful man for this franchise. Further when fans were asking for Ireland to be fired I suggested that Philbin be GM.
Philbin was not an acorn though because he was employed by GB. Acorns by definition are unemployed.

You're close but not exactly right.
I showed up here after PriceMaster left in humiliation when we did not franchise Henne.
Soon after I showed up my handle was stolen and so I invented LincolnContinental.
He who had stolen my CadillacDeVille handle had evidently stepped-off so I moved back to the Caddy. Now my stalker is riding LincolnContinental.
Oh well.
Happy Fu@kin New Year!

Ireland's 4 consecutive losing seasons and endless list of bust draft choices will forever stand as one of the ultimate symbols of GM inadequacy.

Finally truth is spoken.

Mando... Any possible way that our team goes after Lovie Smith as a possible Def Coordinator?

You are all pretty stupid here but HAPPY NEW YEAR anyway

Shula71 says:

Big Miami fan, but we have really created a bad front office image and Ross cant figure that out.
If you were the real Shula71 you would know that the issue started with Owner Wayne Huizenga wanting a big name so he could sell the franchise. Problem is he hired a guy who was a coach but not an NFL personnel guy. Before that Wayne gave to much power to coaches that took the money and ran: Nick Saban and Jimmy Johnson. Moreover look at the receivers drafted posted by Tony Cane on this blog. You can see why this team does not have receiver talent to win in todays NFL. Shula71 Ross is not the issue he inherited the dinosaur Parcells regime. Working with Philbin I expect Ireland to choose the right players to get the team into the playoffs next season. I do not trust Ireland to do the job but he will get one more chance with Philbin's assistance.

F u ck Ireland!

lerlands lover, that just about sums up your IQ!!!!!

Ireland is a bad scout shoved down our throats by Parcells
He is incompetent

Randy S,

First off, Happy new Year. Looked at your 7:24 and i saw a mistake. You proposed resigning Matt Moore, but then in your summary Moore's not listed, but Devlin is. Do you propose keeping Moore AND Devlin?

Would love to have Norv Turner as our OC.

turner was awful here the first time

"We've got to a better job of putting points on the board. This game isn't very complicated," Philbin said.

Ross you better make changes at GM ASAP or there will be a very very empty stadium again next season!. Ireland is a joke as GM. By keeping this guy, you are telling fans that you don't care about winning! You have no playmakers on this team! No leaders, no QB, no running game, no receiving corps worth keeping, terrible TE's, and special teams suck! Ireland should of been the first GM fired yesterday!

How will the dolphins spin it if their draft goes as follows and they do not sigh a high value fa wr:

Round 1: OL
Round 2: CB
Round 2: OL
Round 3: LB
Round 4: WR
Round 5: DL
Round 6: K
Round 7: OL

Man, my wish for the New year is to Feckin Kick Jeff Ireland's. I never wanted to beat up a man so bad. This is the first time I have these fealings I wanna kick is arse.

Remember Tannehill's pro day? I think he had 63-65 throws, missing 4 with 2 drops. He proved he can make all the throws and with accuracy. It was a great showing and his stock in the draft escalated.

But we come to find out, as we do with all quarterbacks when they are in an NFL pocket, that hits, hurries and sacks take their toll on QB performance -and Tannehill was no exception.

No, Tannehill didn't have top receivers. Was it bad QB play in Arizona that caused all world receiver Larry Fitzgerald's poor year, though? If you answer yes, you give a big pass to the turnstiles the Cardinals employed as tackles, then.

I know it's unimaginable to think of the Dolphins concentrating yet again on the OL in the offseason. But how much better is Tannehill without so much harassment? How much better is the run game with good blocking?

In theory, the West Coast Offense functions as a passing offense which then allows the running game to prosper. But the Dolphins -as most teams do -found that neither will work without adequate line play.

While it's fun to mock all the big playmakers the Dolphins might acquire through the draft, FA or trade, remember that the OLs and DLs are the foundations of championship teams. And the Dolphins most assuredly will eventually have to deal with that.

Tannehill sucks. We heard the same excuses for Henne that we're now hearing for TanneBust. Draft a QB or stink for 4 more years. What a rinky dink franchise.

Henne > Tannehill

mike u cant really be that dumb, i just wont accept that

Funny, no one complains about the OL when Matt Moore plays. Tannehill plays in slow motion and doesnt get the speed of the game. Same as Henne. 30 other teams would love to have our OL.

yup mike i guess u are really just that dumb

Russel Wilson has one thing Tannehill doesnt. Accuracy!

Jeff Ireland has a plan. Keep doing exactly the same things and hope for a different result. Makes sense to me.

Ireland is to blame big time here , I agreed that Tony Sparano was not a good or should I say smart head coach, like i think Philbin is, however Ireland has just not put together enough playmakers on this team, especially on offense we were pretty much terrible all year. The talk of getting rid of bush our only true playmaker is crazy that is if you want your offense to score points. There was more talent on the 2011 team than this years team, the job of a gm is to add talent to the team every year, and then this idea about players being cheaper for example Lamar Miller cheaper than Bush is stupid, the offense will be worse with this kind of thinking the fans want to win we don't care about cheap!!!!

This fiscal cliff arrangement is all upside down. The best way to come out of economic recession is to raise taxes and reduce government expenses, like Pre. Reagan did after Carter. You have been hoodwinked. Expect a severe recession/ depression soon.

Building through the drafts?! Since when does a bunch if rookies win playoff games and Super Bowl. I'm not saying its a bad ideas but the draft is a car shoot. I just have a feeling Ireland will resign the majority of the Follhins FAs draft more acourna like Egnew and sit on cap money like he did last year. What was the point if bring 9 million under the cap last season?? Duh to save Ross money.

You sound like Bill Parcells. The Dolphins have all low round draft picks on their OL. I guess the issue is someone not being able to identify talent. Jake Long should be signed if he does not get $$$ crazy.
Dude they need to go playmakers this draft and FA.

With Ireland at GM forget about building thru the draft. Never happen.

The Troll pledge...I don't like the way things are going with the team...Therefore, I will troll on this blog daily and bore the heck out of everyone else with the same bad takes over and over again. I post under many different aliases to make the troll population seem significant but it is not. I will call you names and belittle you because I don't like Ireland or think T-Hill was a good choice for QB. I don't have a real name or even have to be a fan of the team to be here and can say anything and not be held accountable. Signed the 2nd rate trolls on the MH blog.

Here is what I am tired of reading for years here, and maybe it is the same poster in love with the quote ' insanity is repeating the same thing over and over and expecting different results'.

Some blogger out there thinks he is informing us of something new, like the sun rises in the east.

Some blogger thinks he is some literary wizard that he uncovered a clever quote but anyone who did half their school homework knows. It's true, many of you bluffed your way through school and really know nothing, but let's not assume all bloggers will be enlightened by common knowledge.

Now that I said that, I will expect the frequency of that quote to go up 100 times....but its ok, you're bored and need relief.
