Matt Moore at a crossroads this offseason

Look around the NFL games this weekend and you'll see teams that need quarterbacks or intend to go to camp next year with a competition to see who starts at quarterback.

This list is long:

Jacksonville, Philadelphia, Arizona, Kansas City, probably Buffalo, maybe Minnesota and Cleveland.

And that brings me to Dolphins backup quarterback Matt Moore. He will likely have a decision to make this offseason because he is unsigned and because he still believes he can start in the NFL and because that won't be in Miami and because it might be some place else.

"Do I think I can play in this league? Yeah," Moore said Thursday. "Whether it's here or somewhere else, you need to be given that shot and it's hard to look at other places and put yourself in other people's shoes. Situations are what they are everywhere. There's different situations and issues everywhere. I don't worry about what's going on right now."

Right now all Dolphins players have been warned about thinking ahead to the offseason. I wrote a day or so ago that coach Joe Philbin told players to concentrate on the Patriots and nothing else. It's the reason cornerback Sean Smith and other pending free agents have hesitated to talk about their upcoming free agency.

But free agency is staring all of them in the face and that includes Moore, who will not get a shot to win the job in Miami next year but might elsewhere. And that possible chance to compete elsewhere seems appealing to him.

"I'm just looking for an opportunity," he said. "I'd love to be a starter. But we'll figure all that out in the offseason."

Don't get Moore wrong. He's a great teammate and he proved in the Jets game this year that he can come off the bench and play at a high level and lead his team to victory. So he can be a fine backup and re-sign with the Dolphins to do that if he wishes.

That's not a bad gig.

"I'm not unhappy doing that," he said. "But as a player and a competitor I'd love the chance to start somewhere. I think I can. I think I'm capable. Playing and the right situation is something you definitely have to look for."

Obviously someone is going to have to first offer the chance. And so Moore will hit free agency hoping for that chance. That's the priority. Even then, he's going to have to weigh location and situation because he has a family now and his next contract will likely permanently seal him as either a guy with a chance to start or a backup.

And if someone makes the offer, Moore is gone and the Dolphins will be searching for a backup QB. Otherwise, Moore will be offered a contract to be Miami's backup.

"I need to figure all that out in the offseason," he said. "Maybe it doesn't happen and I might be here."

Phins 78....

don't concentrate on what they SAY/WRITE...in as much as you should concentrate on what you're eyes show you.....believe what you SEE......not what is SAID....

Do you remember Tanne throwing from his OWN end zone early on in the season....do you remember the silly decision to keep throwing possession after possession in the 2 MIN DEBACLE @ Houston.....

Tanne WAS reigned in....and he was handcuffed for good reason....

AtlFin,
If that were so then Flynn would be a Fin, Ireland didnt over pay for a back up... Flynn should be better than Tannehill now anyways as Flynn is a vet that sat behind "the mannnnn" Aaron Rogers.

Phins78,

I remember that game. I believe Stoyanovich actually came back and won the game on a later fg. The Jets actually ended up choking.

YG,

Was it you I have the friendly bet on about Rex Ryan in NYJ? I said he'd be back and you said he'd be gone.

I think Tannenbaum will be out as GM. Maybe wonder-evaluator Sparano will be in as GM. 'With the Jets first pick we take Joe Blow, guard from Arkansas'.

IMO, Tannehill has already progressed more in one season than Henne his entire 4yrs Fins career. To add insult to injury Tannehill beat hell out Henne when we played Jax.

Even if it was Henne once again out-awfulling the opposing quarterback.

yes, I can see getting excited about Luck or RG3, then P Manning, but Tanny? He has never been a winner not even in college.

WHDPs @12:55pm,

Very good point on Haley in Pittsburgh. Steeler fans are saying the same thing. could be a one and done deal for him. He and Big Ben just don't get along.

CraigM,

It wasnt me.

Finley or Keller as a FA TE pick up?

Philbin wanted Flynn but Ross wanted Tannehill. Ross won....

Kris,

I felt like the play calling was very vanilla. It didn't appear to me that Sherman opened the playbook very much. We saw the addition of Tannehill running the ball but Sherman is very aware that QB's that run the ball don't last very long in the NFL.

This is my point on RG3 & the Redskins/Shanahans are playing with fire. Yes it might get them to the playoffs this year but if they don't reign RG3 in & have him become more a pocket passer, he will not stay healthy.

matty,

I want the kid from Stanford or the kid from Notre Dame in the draft. If it's second round, great....if we need to trade up to get a second first round pickm then fine too. Keller's good but I don't think he's going anywhere and I think we need to go young at the position. Just my opinion.

Craig,

Getting rid of Arians hurt the Steelers but it worked out for the Colts & for him. Arians is going to get a LOT of offers to be a HC next year for the job he did.

AtlFin,

That's a pile of crap and you know it at 1:02pm. Stick to the facts son. If Philbin had wanted Flynn here he would have signed here. It's clear they felt Tannehill was the better choice.

Well, you have to consider, Ryan Tannehill was rated "the 3rd best" qb coming out of the draft this year.

You also have to consider he was rated 3rd best "mostly on upside" than present ability. Tannehill wasnt even projected to be a day one starter.

We can thank the preseason awfullings of Matty Moore for that one. Philbin practically told us if the qb competition between Moore and Tannehill was even remotely close, that they would go with Tannehill.

Reason being, even if Moore could get us two more regular season victories, it was more critical to get Tannehill nfl qb experience. Especially after drafting him 8th overall on the whims of him being "our future".

Also, victory-wise, we're pretty much where Moore would carry the team anyway. We're 7-8 with a very slim chance to finish 8-8.

Craig and YG the trolls are here. It seems to be one guy today but people are ignoring him so he isn't talking much. He's the guy who keeps saying stupid crap that we have already covered a million times. He never makes a point. His posts are one sentence and they are put out there to get someone going so he has a partner to argue with because he does not understand football nor does he like to talk about the sport.

Please stop answering any post who compares Tannehill to Henne in an unoriginal way. He just keeps repeating the same stupid one liners over and over because he got a rise out of someone over the post at an earlier time. Please don't placate this person by responding to him.

Here's the biggest clue to who this person is. Notice he says something stupid, then you see someone respond with a logical post that should start a friendly debate. At that point the logical person doesn't get a response. Then shortly thereafter a different name appears saying the same exact thing (from the original post) in a different way. Please ignore this stupid POS.

YG,

Agree with you on Tannehill progressing this season. Plenty of fans are caught up in the instant success of some rookie qb's, but we shouldn't disregard the more "traditional" development of a rookie qb.

Tannehill seems to be growing into the role of a leader, and showing the talent needed. If the team brings in some good, young receivers, watch out as Tannehill just gets better in this offense.

"I want the kid from Stanford or the kid from Notre Dame in the draft. If it's second round, great....if we need to trade up to get a second first round pickm then fine too. Keller's good but I don't think he's going anywhere and I think we need to go young at the position. Just my opinion."

Craig,

Who are you??? I actually agree with you today. LOL.

Either TE would be HUGE for this team IMO.

WHDPs,

Too funny!!....yeah I'm finding myself agreeing with you on here too today. Very much agree with your point on Arians too. He's done a nice job this year under difficult circumstances.

OK, fellas.....great talking today. I'm off to work on a Christmas book I got....and no, it's not a colouring book.....LOL.

Cheers!

Craig M....

Good Point on Hailey......I'm sure the Steelers give BIG Rapistburger what he wants....and he wants a better down-field passing game....like the one he won the SBs with.....

I think Hailey is actually a good fit for what Rex and Sanchez want to do....look for them (jets) to be active in the FA market for RB...and OL.....and SPorano to hit the curb.....

Matty, don't hold your breath waiting for a response because you will never get one. This is the exact thing happening again that I just posted. He said something stupid, something that makes absolutely no sense BECAUSE he wants someones attention.

But you answered him in a respectful manner and he wants no part of that. He's waiting for someone to get mad because that's what he's here for. You're wasting your time trying to debate him, he really has no worth while opinion on the Dolphins.

Phins 78,

You are correct on the troll alert.

Oh my God guys stop it! LOL Don't you notice he never answers back? He's trying to get you to talk about something we have already discussed. He wants you to point out the obvious or get mad at his stupidity, that's his game. He's not going to engage you in a rationale conversation. Hahahaha

WHDP, haley is the biggest reason they flopped. He's so SHITE

Phins78,

I would love to see Reshad Jones have a monster game against Brady Sunday to show the pro bowl snubbers how greatly wrong they were.

3 picks, including a pick 6, a strip sack, and 10 tackles. You know, an "all pro" calibre game. Thats the best way to say:

"Take your pro bowl snub and shove it up your stinky bungholes"!

WHDP it's so obvious right? The guy needs new material.

I would love to have Moore back next season - especially if Tannehill is going to run more and thus exposing himself to injuries.

The Jets, Philly, AZ, JAX, TENN, and KC will be looking for a real starter like Alex Smith and will hunt in the draft. For those teams drafting a QB, they'll bring in Moore to compete or treat him as a journeyman to groom the drafted QB.

Signal,

So true. The odds of Tannehill coming in and playing at the same level of a Luck, RG3, or Wilson were awfully slim. That's based on college qb starting experience alone.

We see in NYJ what happens when a qb isnt developed properly. Sanchez didnt have a lot of college starting qb experience coming in either. The Jets have completely ruined him, with bringing in Tebow being the straw breaking the camel's back.

Philbin/Sherman, thus far, are doing a fine job bringing alone T'hill. 2013, Ireland begins bringing in his recieving weapons.

"I don't see Andrew Luck wearing down. Every player is tired this time of year. You play through it," said Pagano. In six games since Week 10, Luck has failed to complete more than 54.1 percent of his passes in a single game and hasn't completed 50 percent of his passes in four straight weeks. The Colts are heading into Week 17 to take on the Texans, and they won't rest their starters, even though the numbers show that Luck could probably use a breather."

How come I doubt that many Colts fans are questioning Luck's accuracy??? A QB's accuracy is going to suffer when he's forced to win every game by throwing the football. W/o a running game & w/o a great defense it's truly amazing that the Colts are going to the playoffs. Luck is a special player & his receivers have played great but the Colts are a very flawed football team.

YG That would be awesome. I love my Fins but I'm afraid the outcome of this game is going to be much different. I think the Pats will be firing on all cylinders and will want to make a statement heading into the playoffs not to mention they are still fighting for the #1 seed.

We need to keep this game close with defense and try to win at the end because our offense probably isn't going to overwhelm these guys. I hate to say it but they need to play Sparano ball with the lack of play makers we have. But only for this game! Hopefully next season brings some play makers that can take us away from having to win games at the end against better teams.

Kris, you mean Sparano is not getting an extension??

Haha, that guy was good for one thing, turning the Jets into a holy heck of a mess .,...

48-go,

I dont really think its how many times a qb runs that subjects him to much greater chance of injury. It his non-propensity to slide that does this,

The nfl protectsa the running qb with the "slide rule". If he doesnt slide he then becomes a "runningback". That's when the injuries begin.

Craig,
Good call on the TE's in the draft, I was just seeing if anyone though either Finley or Keller would be a good fit..

Mark I agree a little about Haley. But the thing I keep going back to is the fact that Ben made it hard from day one. He went against the Haley signing so he was fighting against this guy before he was even hired. Then throughout training camp he constantly and openly questioned the offense.

So I believe that Ben is equally to blame. The leader of the team, you complain up not down. He let his teammates know he had no faith in the system. That in turn I'm sure hurt their confidence this season.

Phins78,
I gotcha, Ive always seen him in here posting off the wall stuff but I thought today I would try and get an answer out of him. He actually did respond from the first post addressed to him but didnt on the 2nd.

"I would love to have Moore back next season - especially if Tannehill is going to run more and thus exposing himself to injuries.

The Jets, Philly, AZ, JAX, TENN, and KC will be looking for a real starter like Alex Smith and will hunt in the draft. For those teams drafting a QB, they'll bring in Moore to compete or treat him as a journeyman to groom the drafted QB."

48,

Someone is going to sign Michael Vick too & Flynn is either going to be traded or released.

What I love about the Jets situation is that they owe the 'Sanchise' over $8 million in guaranteed money & the cap hit--even if they trade him or cut him--is still going to be enormous.

My guess is that Tannenbaum & Sparano will be gone but they'll keep the Fatman. The name that's been floated for OC in NY is Norv Turner.

48 Go I have a tough time believing any franchise will try to sell Moore as their QB. the vet jobs will go to Vick and Smith.

Phins78, hate to disagree but they have to be more aggressive in the passing attack. Just have to be smart about it. The Pats achilles heel is their pass defense

Phin78,

The final game against the Pats will should be like our 2012 "Super Bowl". I would accept no less than this type of effort by our players.

Yes, we're maybe 4-5 players away to being this type of team. But the players on the roster who will be around when we're this type of team. Need to be the primary players playing with a "Super Bowl" type effort Sunday.

Mark I agree a little about Haley. But the thing I keep going back to is the fact that Ben made it hard from day one. He went against the Haley signing so he was fighting against this guy before he was even hired. Then throughout training camp he constantly and openly questioned the offense.

Phins78,

Ben has never been a class act but he's a heck of a QB. It's not Ben's fault that the running game sucked this year.

Phins, it was a stupid decision by THE FRANCHISE from the start. haley is a prickly character - a my way or the highway kind of guy. I mean we all remember him yelling at BOldin on the sidelines. In KC, he ran HIS SYSTEM whether it fit the players he had or not. Then he takes this attitude and tries to enforce it on 3 time super bowl QB Big Ben who is not the smartest guy to begin with??? ANd had great success doing things a different way ...

Man, it was a train wreck anyone can see coming a mile away.

Mark @ 1:26....lol....

The only person who didn't see that coming was was Rex and Tannunbaum.....

@ least we FIN FANS can take solace in the fact that a former FIN HC finally dismantled that puke green team....

WHDP,

Good cal;l on the Colts. They shouldnt have beaten us. If Smith doesnt lose the ball in the lights. Is a Luck pick for throwing into "double-coverage". A huge no-no for any qb.

Then you have the for sure pick 6 Karlos Dansby let slip right through his hands.

We gety these two plays and it would have been a fairly easy victory over the Colts. The Colts may be the "most overrated team going into the 2012-13 playoffs this nfl season.

There is another thing to be thankful about with Ireland... getting rid of good ole fist pump lol

Well Matty at least you got a response. That's shocking to me. He must be in a good mood today.

"Someone is going to sign Michael Vick too"

Doesn't this move just have the Jets written all over it?! They're going to want to win the off season again and this would certainly make headlines.

Yeah man, even though it was bass ackwards trying to portray me assuming Tannehill would progress like Henne when in fact in his post he portrayed that. lol

As long as he is not with the Bills or JETS we will wish Moore success in his future.

Fair enough Mark. I that,,,,,,that is the way we should beat them. I just don't think we have the talent or experience to get into a shootout with the Patriots. If we do go aggressive, in turn ignoring time of possession, I believe we lose by at least 2 scores. We will see how it plays out and I hope I'm wrong and they can keep up in that type of game if it comes down to it.

Def Mark, Haley was the wrong guy for the job.

What I learned about Michael Vick:

"He still isnt quite a pocket qb".

Sure if he has all day to throw. But when it comes to having the normal 2.5 to 3.0 secs most nfl qb have to throw. He looks very uncomfortable in the pocket.

I believe it may be due to having the "greenlight" tro run somuch earlier in his career. Philly tried to take thaty away and make him a purely pocket passer.

Anyway, at this point in Vick's career, being a running qb would totally work against him. Especially seeing that he rarely slides, he's a n injury waiting to happen nearly every play. Beit running or not manipulating the passing pocket very well.

Sure some of it was oline protection. But I also saw a qb who didnt operate in the passing pocket very well too.

He is a heck of a qb but last week he sucked. He threw two ints to end the game when they had a chance to win it. The throws were just horrible decisions on Bens part. As good as he is last week was on him imo.

Agreed at 1:33 YG. Big game for the players, many of whom are auditioning for spots on the Dolphins or on another team.

Only problem with Ben, is Haley's trying to tyake away what truly makes him "Big Ben". That's extending plays outside of the passing pocket.

Clearly Ben's best assett has always been making big plays out of broken plays. Clearly, that's been his legend.

matty! HA! That was the post that tipped me off to the game. It made no sense, it was as if he didn't understand your point at all. But really he was just looking to create controversy by making things up.

Guys I have to go. It was great talking with all of you today. Drive safe getting home and enjoy your night.

Phins78,

Not so much auditioning for roster spots. What Im talking about are the players on this team that plan on being part of the future "championship" nucleus. These are the players I want to see step up agaist the Pats Sunday.

Guyts "auditiong for roster spots", there's "fat chance" they wont be part of a "future championship nucleus" anyway.

I want to see if we have any present "championship hub pieces" that will show this is what they are.

Phins, I'm not saying put it up 50 times either ... let's rewind to the last game they played.

Miami's defense is enjoying a period of success against the Patriot O. They have a couple of opportunites in the third Qtr to do something on offense and both times they come out and doa Sparano, run, run, 3rd and long, punt.

Pick your spots. I think if the Dolphisn were more aggressive in that third quarter, it could've been different. They might have won, they might have thrown picks and lost by more, who knows. But one thing's for sure, you can't expect to hold them down all day and sooner or later, you have to take your shots. You have to plan to score 25 points at least.

Cheers Phins!

If Pete Carroll was our HC, Moore would've started. He plays the better guy no matter what.

Scotty, if Moore was the better player in the competition in camp, he would've started. Just like Wilson was better in camp than Flynn. Actually Garrard was going to be our starter until he got hurt ..
