FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- If you wondered how wide the gulf between the Dolphins and a playoff team is, now you know.
The Dolphins are seemingly an ocean apart from the Patriots. And today's 28-0 loss here is proof.
Joe Philbin's team was never really in it. Never really fought. Never really seemed capable of staying with New England.
The Patriots offense dominated in every imaginable category -- first downs, time of possession, passing yards, rushing yards.
The Patriots defense set a team single-game high for the season with six sacks. And after establishing that mark, they added a seventh sack on the very next play.
And not only did Miami get beat but it got beat up.
Richie Incognito (neck), Kevin Burnett (concussion), Anthony Fasano (concussion) and Dimitri Patterson (ankle) all left the game and did not return.
Doesn't matter, however. The Dolphins season is over.

ChadPenn,
Kinda get what your saying, but 28-0 isn't exactly a fine line...
More like a huge gap.

Thanks....but those other two guys are ok as we'll....if REAL is our barometer for ok.....
And if that is is the measuring stick....then the Aloco character is as far from ok as you can be....he is merely a figment of some one's imagination.....

rofl! SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWINNGGGGG and a miss Aloco. Ireland lovers? Isd that why Kris and I have spent the past months berating the guy? You're such a loser. Tell everyone your other names since I already know them.

Orlando......Phins need defense with that 1st pick, especially since the draft seems to be D talent heavy early on--a decent Tackle or Guard always makes sense, but we need serious pass rush help (Brady had 9 minutes to throw every time today) and CB help (wow......CBs are brutal.....even S Smith aint that great)--Rd 1 should be a primo position, so hopefully its on the D side (Warmack will be gone by then anyway).
Posted by: benz | December 30, 2012 at 08:20 PM
Aloco only posts when people argue with him about being a phony. When you want to debate one of his made up silly football opinions he disappears. Funny how the guy is churning out nonstop posts now. What an ignaramous.
Het Aloco can we talk to oscar for a bit? Please?

Yes, Orlando, in year three, Ireland will turn his focus to people who score. What a GM, great priorities.
Gates lasted one season before being cut, I bet Egnew is the same. If you cant even get on the field this season with Miami having ZERO TALENT in the receiving corps, you probably are a giant bust, let's be honest with ourselves.
Yes, for a sixth round pick, Clay might be ok. But, that's the problem, you can't wait until the sixth round to address playmakers. You get them in the first round.
Taking Chance Warmack in the first round is literally the dumbest thing they could do. They already used high picks on Long, Martin, Jerry and Pouncey. Repeat after me: THE FIRST ROUND IS FOR GUYS WHO SCORE AND FORCE TURNOVERS.
Tyler Eifert is perfectly worthy of a first round pick. Or they could take a corner or a safety or a pass rusher. If they take another offensive lineman in the first round, Ireland should be fired on the spot, arrested, and charged with crimes against humanity.

benz,
Totally agree with your post on the need for pass rush. I've been singing this tune for the last 6-8 weeks. Guys throw out the fact we're top 5 in sacks. Huh? Where was that today? How is that a true measure of our pass rush. Cam Wake gets 4.5 sacks against a weak Cardinal offensive line and all of a sudden we're a top pass rishing team. Where was any of that today? If you want to beat Tom Brady you have to get in his face and disrupt him. We don't have a defence that can do that right now. If you give him the time we gave him today he'll carve you up all day long. Enough of this BS with adding CBs in the first round. Nothing changes until you can make the QB throw when he's not ready and the WRs aren't expecting the ball. THAT'S how you get off the field on thrid down.
Posted by: Craig M | December 30, 2012 at 08:25 PM
agree with BK.....dont be so fast to cast off Jake Long--sounds good, saves money, but the dude, even if not elite, can still play--O line protection today was brutal.

How much more fu&*(ing proof do you need moron?
Posted by: Phins78 | December 30, 2012 at 08:26 PM
benz,
I agree with you that we would be better off drafting a pass rusher. In my opinion next to QB that is the most important need of any team. In this pass happy league a pass rusher is what disrupts these QBs. My wish list includes Jarvis Jones, Werner, Moore, and Dion Jordan. The first 3 will proably be gone by the time we pick.
To me Warmack may be the most dominant player in this draft. However, because he plays guard he may slip past the 10th pick. You want to run the ball well next year add this guy to your line and the holes for your backs between Pouncey and Warmack will be gigantic.

Posted by: benz | December 30, 2012 at 08:28 PM
I love the morons ( or so call experts) on this blog. Miami going in was a 2-14 or 4-12 team. They overachieve in my opinion and the team that play today was load with second and third level players because of injuries. They need two pressure players and a lock down CB, WRs and 2 TEs one of the last 2 from free agency and someone like Kenny Phillips in the back and.
Posted by: tony | December 30, 2012 at 08:28 PM
Martin has played well in two games and poorly in one at LT. Long is just not cost effective. He is always banged up and was ranked as the 40th best tackle in football when he was healthy by football outsiders. That's just not enough for a guy who will want big money.
That money is far better spent on Mike Wallace or Dwayne Bowe or someone, anyone who can get open for Tannehill and give him a chance at success. The dolphins offensive line was about league average this season at giving up sacks. The WR corps had THREE EFFING TOUCHDOWNS COMBINED FOR A WHOLE SEASON. THAT IS NOT A MISPRINT. IF WE DONT SPEND MONEY AND MULTIPLE PICKS TO FIX THAT, THEN WHAT IS THE POINT OF WATCHING GAMES AND TRACKING STATISTICS.

Blah, blah, blah it's all white noise. An easy way to fix that problem would be to post under the same name all of the time. Craig,i have to respecfully disagree on picking a pass rusher early on.
The Patriots,so often were at 3rd and 5/3rd and 10/3rd and 15 but Coyle would only rush 3 and play coverage.
We could have the best pass rushers in the NFL but if Coyle consistently rushes just 3,whats the point?
The only time we blitzed,McCann had a CB sack
Am i the only one who's seriously worried that both Coyle and Sherman just cant get it done in todays NFL??
Posted by: Mark | December 30, 2012 at 08:33 PM
Andrew,
So please explain why Martin had such a bad game today. We've been told by so many that 'he's a natural LT', 'is younger and better than Long'. How can you say after today that you're confident that Martin's the longterm answer for LT? What's your plan for RT?
So your tone to some of your posts is 'Ireland doesn't draft playmaker's and yet your tone to other posts is 'let's get rid of Long and draft another tackle'. Im confused bud. How are you able to argue both sides of the argument?
Posted by: Craig M | December 30, 2012 at 08:35 PM
Craig at 8:25, very true. I was thinking the same thing the whole time. You can't let a qb sit back there like that and expect to win the game. Not only did he barely get touched but his wrs were wide open on most of their completions. Rarely does he have to make a perfect pass, His windows are enormous. And when he did have to make the perfect pass he missed horribly which sent him into a hissy fit. Did you see that cry baby? Thill has to make a perfect pass on almost every throw because our wrs are garbage and Brady gets all flustered if he has to do it twice a game.
Posted by: Phins78 | December 30, 2012 at 08:35 PM
#1 Dolphin Fan in Montreal,
I am not surprised by today's performance and I called it early on to look out for the fins laying an egg. Brady and Belisheck know how to step on your throat and take the life out of a team that has nothing to play for. They knew that if they put pressure early the fins would eventually give up. Think about it miserably cold, no chance at the playoffs, and then you start getting man handled. Perfect recipe for just giving up and start making vacation plans.

Romo strikes...with the1st int of the game.....
Posted by: Kris | December 30, 2012 at 08:37 PM
Craig, we need pass rushers and corners. At least we have one dominant pass rusher though. Sean Smith is an average #2 corner at best and the other guys are replacement level if not worse. (Watching Jimmy Wilson try to cover Welker in the slot today was hilarious in a morbid way).
Good pass rushers make corners look better, yes. Good corners also make pass rushers look better. It's a symbiotic relationship. We have Wake and just spent a 3rd on Vernon after spending a 2nd on Misi. We traded Vontae. We cannot go into next season with Carroll and Wilson getting significant playing time. They are jokes.
If they can get someone like Jarvis Jones at 12 (who is elite and forces turnovers), thats fine. You can never have enough pass rushers and he is not a joke in pass coverage like most of our LBs.
But they HAVE to address CB and safety too. Clemons, Carroll and Wilson are all HORRIBLE. You can't win in 2013 with a swiss cheese secondary even if you have three great pass rushers. It's that simple.
A good plan:
Sign Mike Wallace
Draft Jarvis Jones.
Trade up from the first of the two 2nd round picks and get Tyler Eifert.
Take the best available CB in the third round.
Take the best available WR with the next third round pick.
Draft a RT with the fourth round pick.
Let Long walk. Let Clemons walk. Let Bush walk. Re-sign Hartline. Give Reshad Jones an extension (I was wrong on him admittedly though his pass coverage is just ok). Let Starks walk unless he accepts a below market deal. Re-sign Sean Smith (I don't love him either but he is literally our only NFL level corner).
Move Martin permanently to the left side. Sign a veteran RT on the cheap to compete with the guy you take at OT in the 4th round.
Use the later rounds to find some LB depth, some DT depth and some more special teams guys.

THE DEFENSE IS GOOD NOT GREAT. THIS DEFENSE WOULD BE AT THE CUSP OF GREATNESS IF THIS DEFENSE WAS ALSO SMART. pLAYING AGAINST BRADY, NOT ONLY DOES A DEFENSE NEEDS TO BE GOOD, THEY NEED ALSO TO BE SMART.
THIS ISNT A VERY INDIVIDUALLY SMART DEFENSE. bILL ARNSPARGER'S PLAYERS WERE BOTH GOOD AND SMART.
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | December 30, 2012 at 08:39 PM
The results this season should have been expected playing with few playmakers and a Rookie QB. Last season the Dolphins were beating the Patriots until the final minute but decisions were made that took a step back to mover forward. The Dolphins can turn things around during the off season by recruiting the right players in free agency and the draft(mostlty the draft). Evaluations on what was done for this season with the QB and other decisions can not be made until the end of next season.

Posted by: Phins78 | December 30, 2012 at 08:39 PM
Craig you were right about bringging back Long. Garner is pathetic and you see that a rookie tackle is going to make mistakes, therefore, we cannot drat a rookie tackle next year.
Don't be too hard on Martin. He is just a rookie and frankly that whole like played like crap today. He is a smart guy and needs to get stronger next year but I think that he is going to be a good Tackle. However, we have to bring back Long or T-hill will never develop.

This team has a long way to go. First get rid of Ireland and bring in a GM that will know what to do with the draft picks...here is a hint Mr. Ross, he's called Bill Polian. Second, get some talent for Tannehill to throw to, at the end all he had was 3rd string WR's who could not catch balls...that's you Binns. Third, get rid of Sean Smith because he can't even pick his nose, no one is afraid of throwing to Smith's side. Pick up a Left Tackle and some good WR's in Free agency, resign Bush cheap if not let him go and bring in someone that can compete with Thomas and Miller and finally get this through your head Mr. Ross, we are not the moneyball team of the NFL. It does not work, you have to spend the money to bring in talent. This fanbase will not accept another losing season.
Posted by: Felix | December 30, 2012 at 08:40 PM
They also need to have more cap flex by cutting Carpenter, Marshall or Patterson and low pricing some the FA. This in coming FA is deeper than last year with more younger players than normal and with more teams out of cap to compete this year than last year. Base on this good things are coming for this ONE YEAR.
