Pro Bowl announced today: Dolphins candidates

The Pro Bowl rosters for the AFC and NFC will be announced at 7 p.m. The Dolphins are bound to get some love from voters despite their 7-8 record.

So which players are viable Pro Bowl candidates?

Cameron Wake is a practical shoe-in. The defensive end is fourth in the NFL and third in the AFC (behind J.J. Watt and Von Miller) with 15 sacks this season.

Wake is the most explosive 4-3 defensive end in football right now. So he is going to get his props, I am assuming.

The field beyond Wake looks a little thin.

Punter Brandon Field leads the AFC with a 50.3 average per punt. His net average of 41.1 is fifth in the AFC so he has worthy and strong challengers in front of him.

Running back Reggie Bush?

I doubt it. He has 960 yards and that's good, but that's only ninth-best in the  AFC. And it's not as if Bush has any statistic, such as 20-yard runs or touchdowns, where he is atop the pack. Nope, don't see Bush getting the nod.

Wide receiver Brian Hartline is 15th in the NFL and sixth in the AFC with 1,014 yards. He has an outside, outside chance because his 14.7 yards per catch is second among AFC leaders, behind only Demaryius Thomas of Denver, who has a 15.0 average.

Mike Pouncey will get some votes but it'll be interesting because his brother Markice Pouncey siphons off a good number.

Reshad Jones will get some votes but I'm afraid his excellent game Sunday -- two fumble recoveries and an interception -- came days too late because players and coaches around the league concluded their voting on Thursday and Friday.

Middle linebacker Karlos Dansby leads the Dolphins with 121 tackles, but that's only 13th best in the NFL and sixth best in the AFC. Plus Dansby doesn't have too many highlight-type plays. The fact Ray Lewis missed most of the season will help Dansby.

So what does this all tell you?

Well, when Miami's top playmakers aren't even in the conversation of top playmakers around the league or conference it says Miami needs more and better playmakers.

Not a surprise to anyone.

-People bash Bush, however he is the best back on this team behind a line that is average at best. Don't give me the miller stuff. I like the kid but bush is better. Bush give you headaches but, he give a viable threat in the back field that can create. Miller is still a grade lower than Bush

-If long is released RT needs to be upgraded and I would like to improve at the G position.

-Hartline is awful. I know I can cover him. He has average speed, poor route running and very good to great hands. That's a 3rd or 4th WR ppl. we need at mininal 2 WR in this draft, 1 that can start and another that can contribute or FAs (more money not the way to rebuild)

- Defense is more far along than offense add DBs, a pass rusher (never enough of them) and a OLB (trade Misi he doesn't fit in a 4-3). V.Davis trade better show up cause he was our best corner and it showed all year.

Level of importance
- Starting WR with pro bowl level potential to superstar potential
- figure out what you going to do with the Oline, long and Bush (resign bush nothing more than what he been making 5.5mil/yr is the most I'll give for 2 years and let Long walk if he getting more than 7mil/yr)
-Resign starks 2-3 yr deal. Man earned it and really been consistent.

- Not a fan of S.smith/Mathis combo. One must go and the replacement has to be a corner stone DB with pro bowl level potential i.e V. Davis

-If Bush walk add a late round "BIG" RB and start moving the offense to be more pass happy (have to get those WRs)

Draft needs: *WR*WR*DB*OLB*G*SS

pro bowl is not a measuring stick at all. means nothing except jones will use it as leverage in new deal

LOL....spoken like the a FAN of a team that doesn't have many pro-bowlers on it.....

TONIGHT.....have the AFC PLAY OFF picture handy on you're COMPUTER.....and then MATCH PRO-BOWLERS to PLAY OFF TEAMS.....and tell me how the MATH works out on that......

I'm gonna go out on a LIMB...and say...teams going to the PLAY OFFS will have a HIGHER % of PRO-BOWLERS...than those who are playing they're last game of the season Sunday....

"Pro-bowl NOT a measuring stick"....lol....

How do you purpose we evaluate our GM then.....

It was just an example of a team over loading on talent to create a more potent offense.. I suppose I am thinking more along the lines of him being used as a passing option.

I guess this is one thing that I dont understand about Ireland, why do we not negoiate contracts in season? This is my lack of knowledge here, in the back of my mind I always remember other teams negoiating during a players final year.

All depends upon the player's performancefrom the beginning, middle and end of the season.

If he starts slow he's very likely to get extended in the beginning of the season. If he picks it 2-3 games in a row then ebbs 2-3 games in a row. How can you extend him?

Now if he picks it late in the season, now the player has a little bit of the upper hand, and trying to extend will be around the same amount of dollars it would be if you waited until offseason to negotiate.

Now, if that player is consistently blowing the league away the first 7-8 games of the year, then both the gm and player will have close to equal leverage to negotiate within season. The player cant get "low-balled" and the gm is in a little better position to not get ovberly "high-balled" by the player either.

Usually its this type of situation a player's renegotiated in season.Or your guy is a perrenial great player coming into his fa year. In this case you dont wanna risk losing him.

I agree WHDP, this is Irelands most important and telling year as a GM. He has done a good job accumilating picks for the draft and high picks at that. He also, will have a good amount of money to spend as well unlike last year. I think he is finally out of the restraints that the Parcells era had him operating out of.

MattyB,

I love that we have a lot of picks but it only matters what you do with them. I think Jason Taylor said we traded him for a 2nd round pick & we wound up using that pick on Pat White...

Reggie Bush is Joey Porter all over again.
Remeber that?
Porter left as a FA after Jeff lowballed him.
That did not help us.
To make up for it Ireland had to make Dansby the highest paid LB in history to get him to sign here (look it up).
So Ireland did not help us by refusing to pay Porter and then over-paying Dansby.
All he did was jerk us off.

go finsssssssssssss lets get to monday so we can start the most important off season ever for this fenchise

So the issue with Bush is not, "how much am I willing to pay for Reggie Bush?".
The issue is: What AVAILABLE players can be reasonably be expected to put up the yardage that Bush does from that position and how much does it cost?

unlikely

The Jets!!

The Jets Will Give Reggie $7 Million a Year for 4 Years!!

They Don't Have Cap Space But We Can Only Hope!!

The Chargers!!

The Cards!!

The Lions!!

A Couple Teams Will Pay Reggie!!

Remember Ireland Replaced Ronnie And Ricky!! With Reggie!!

He Replaced Reggie With L.Miller!!

And Next Year Expect Some Acorn(M.Lattimore) To Replace L. Miller!! Or Be Part Of A New Duo!!

P.S- T-Hill Is MVP!! Specially IF HE PULLS OFF THE UPSET!!

No Wr's This Week!! Please!! Tell Hartline To Stay home!!

Even Fasano!! Isn't He Hurt? He Looks Hurt!! Well Clay Is Down!! So Egnew Has To Play!!

But T-Hill And The Family Jewels(The Acorns, Binns & Matthews)!! Vs Brady, Belichek and The Refs!!

Lets See If Philbin & Co!! Are Better the 2nd Time Around!!

Porter fizzled out in Arizona, talking smack about Wake who took is position and made us forget about him. Dansby was brought in to be a middle LB, to replace loud mouth Crowder, Porter played outside.
Porter in his last year had 9 sacks. His totals went like this first year in Miami, 5.5 then 17.5 then 9 then with the Cardinals, 5 and 1 in his final year.
That shows Ireland did a good job replacing Porter with Wake and a poor job of replacing Crowder by over paying for Dansby

mattyb,
GMs that understand scarcity sign or trade thier serviceable starters prior to thier final season. If a good GM let's a starter go it's because he has deteriorated and is a borderline starter at this point in his career. His replacement is on the roster.
If the pending FA knows he is on the downside of his career he may extend in-season for a bargain rate to stay with a contender one more year.
Otherwise a starting caliber player on a crappy team has no choice but to try and go to a contender and get fair value.
That is why the rich get richer.

"CB Dimitri Patterson played on all 67 defensive snaps in his Dolphins debut Sunday.
Patterson was claimed off waivers last Tuesday and immediately made a major impact. The journeyman may have to restructure his contract as he's set to earn $4.5 million in 2013, but he has a chance to stick as a starter or third corner in Miami. Sean Smith is an impending unrestricted free agent and Nolan Carroll/Jimmy Wilson have struggled."

Did anyone else notice how much better Patterson is than Carroll & the rest of the clowns we have???

If Big Paul made it last year as a backup, he should make it again this year.

DeVille,

According to that logic then all of our FA starters have either 'deteriorated' or are just 'borderline starters' b/c no one has been extended.

I'm willing to accept that to be the case with guys like Long, Smith, Clemons, & Starks but there's NO WAY I'd put Hartline in that group. He had a great seasons for us & the chemistry he has with Tannehill is exceptional. Ireland would be making a big mistake to let him walk & sign somewhere else.

mattybfromNC,

Why Ireland Doesn't Offer Contracts In Season?

Ireland Himself!! Doesn't Know What Leg He Is Standing On!! Ross Still Hasn't Made A Decision. Ireland Has 1 More Year Left. How Do You Think That Is Going To Play Out?

Plus, Resigning Guys Now. Affects This Years Cap, Not Next Yr. The Fins High Cap Is A lot Of Dead Money! And Old CBA Contracts!!

This Is Also Philbins Evaluation Season.

Good deal,
I didnt think of it effecting this years CAP vs next years..
In that case could you resign a guy pay him a bonus which doesnt effect the CAP and make his first year pay light?

Dashi,

You bring up some very interesting points. I have no problems if Philbin wants to take his time & evaluate every single player at the end of the season. The one player that I really believe has EARNED an extension is Hartline so I'd be pissed if he's not back next year.

BTW--I didn't know that re-signing players now affects cap space THIS year.

Hartline earned a pay raise but not from us. He isn't a 1,000 Yd WR and your kidding yourself if you think other wise. If your go to route it a hitch... that is an issue. I promise I would have gotten a pick 6 off him

mattbfromNC,

@2:17, Yes.

Depending On The Contract. You Alter The Cap Number For Any Year. Look At Sanchez's Contract! He Gets 2 Years Of Bonuses!

This Is Philbins Evaluation Season. Is The Most Logical Explanation.

Philbin Wants To Make Sure He Gets A Good Look At What He Has. Before Deciding What To Keep.

Notice None Of The Free Agents This Year. Were Signed To Long Contracts. Even R.Marshall The Fins Can Cut Him In The Off Season And Not Get A Cap Hit.

The First Priority! Should Be Signing Our Players First! And The Ones That Don't Really Have A Replacement Already On The Roster! J.Long, S.Smith, Starks! Followed By Bush, Hartline, and Clemmons at the Right Price. With The Last Tier Being Fasano, J.Lane, And Thigpen. At A Real Good Discount.

Tannehill has shown he could develop into a mediocre backup. I see a repeat of the 4 years of RoboHenne.

O'darris,

LOL!!! I didn't realize you were better than the CB's that currently line up on Sundays.

The biggest offseason priorities should be resigning Bush, bringing in some real QB competition, and trading for a WR.

why trade. sign wallace or bowe. sign finley if hes released. offer bush middle of road contract. thill the starter easily. draft corners, pass rusher, wr

On The Game.

Brady Is Going To School Dansby!!

Which Is A Shame!! This Never Happened When We Had A Real MLB!!

The Only Match Up Worth Watching. Is The Pats Defense Vs Tannehill. Will T-Hill Show Growth? Or Is He Chad Henne?

Can't Ask That Question Anymore!!

And We All Know Moore Is Less!! With The Dolphins. At QB And WR!!

Is T-Hill Better Than Feidler? (Feels Funny Even Making That Comparison.)

Binns And Matthews Vs The Pats DB's!!

Hartline Needs To Rest!! He Had 2 Drops Last Game!! That Any Real WR Would've Caught!! 1 For A TD!

Matthews Is A Better WR. And Binns Fits The Prototype!!

Rather See These 2 Develop Chemistry Than Hartline! These Guys Are Under Contract For At Least 3 Years!!

Who Would You Rather Have In 2-3 Years?

L.Miller, Matthews, Binns.

Or

Bush, Hartline, M.Moore(The Wr)

Why would they trade for a wr when they have 5 picks in the first 3 rounds and plenty of money under the cap to bring in Wallace , Bowe, or Jennings? Yeah, wonderful plan.

Hartline has a back injury, same as Bess.

just sit hartline, he wont be here next year anyways

Lets See Sign Bowe Or Wallace People:

Larry Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson are Making $16 million plus per season. Meaning we dont sign Bowe or Wallace for under $13 million a year if we're lucky.

Thaty leaves about $27 million in cap space. Which means there will even be more ex-dolphins before the end of the fa period than we originally planned.

Hartline has a back injury, same as Bess.

Usually this is what happens when you have "2 Broke Back Mountain" wr's.

Only one bowl i care about and the Dolphins again won't be playing in it, but you are right they need more play makers, that said they were close this year to making the playoffs and that was with a rookie QB and no Number one WR. And there were 2 games they lost because of their kicker, so the final analysis is add some more good players and we should get the desired results, however next year's schedule isn't as friendly as this years was.

There are NO superstar Dolphins! Maybe Wake...don't overpay for Smith, Bush, Long, Hartline, Stark. They can easily be replaced for less. They aren't getting us in the playoffs anyways. Middle of the pack talent.

Only one Dolphin made the pro bowl. Cameron Wake.

LOL!!! I didn't realize you were better than the CB's that currently line up on Sundays.

There been picks throw his way already and I believe T-Hill has made great decisions. BTW, I'm not a bad athlete myself. Never played in the NFL Had my moments in college
