Special teams negatively affecting chance to win

The Dolphins special teams has had some great moments from Marcus Thigpen this year and got excellent all-around games from the entire unit, particularly at New York, this season.

But lately, the special teams have had to fight to merely keep from hurting Miami's chances of winning games. And on Sunday, special teams fully hurt Miami's chances to win the game.

Three weeks ago, special teams set the tone for the game (in exactly the wrong fashion) when Leodis McKelvin returned a first quarter punt 79 yards for a TD and a Bills lead.

Two weeks ago, the Dolphins fought to tie the game against Seattle in the fourth quarter and on the ensuing kickoff Leon Washington returned the kickoff 98 yards to give the Seahawks the lead again.

In fairness, it must be said that Thigpen eventually answered McKelvin's blow with a kickoff return TD of his own. And the Dolphin overcame the lapse against Seattle by rallying late.

But Sunday, there was no bailing out of the special teams by Thigpen or other units.

Yesterday, long snapper John Denney delivered a bad snap to punter Brandon Fields after Miami's first possession. And Fields didn't field the snap and then didn't cleanly grab the ball on the ground, having instead to snatch it twice. The hesitation was a killer so Fields decided to run to get himself daylight and a position to kick.

He was tackled at the Miami 12 yard line.

And the defense, put in a tough spot, could not save the Dolphins. They gave up a touchdown.

Seven points.

In the second quarter, the Dolphins apparently stopped Tom Brady and company on downs at his own 29 yard line. But when the Patriots punted, Jimmy Wilson rushed headlong into Zoltan Mesko's thigh. Roughing the punter. Fifteen yards.

The Partiots drive had new life at their own 44 yard line.

And, again, the defense wasn't able to bail out the special teams. The Patriots drove the rest of the way in 11 plays for another touchdown.

Fourteen points.

Obviously, it was not the special teams that gave up the points. Obviously the defense didn't provide heroics on the first New England opportunity and basically caved in giving up 56 yards more on the second New England opportunity.

But the Miami special teams cannot give up such opportunities.

As center Mike Pouncey said, "We have a low margin of error."

And the special teams lately has been hurting that margin.

Nice post DC!

You can tell the people that had unrealistic expectations for this year. I always have high hopes, but I try and temper it with the situation.

Despite the fact that this is the most obvious rebuild ever undertaken, many respond like we're an underacheiving playoff team.

HINT: It's not 1975!

LOL......

There is *no* excuse to rough the kicker. None.

Cartman

Had one called for us last week.

Tannehill did not impress me yesterday. Three times in the same game on the same play he misses. And another he threw where Hartline had to go out of bounds. For crying out loud, hit the man in stride. How hard is that for millions a year?

With Philbin here I see the graveyard of players coming from Dallas to die in Miami being closed down... No more Colombo pick ups lol

Posted by: mattybfromnc | December 03, 2012 at 04:10 PM

Thank God!

Though I have to admit, I wouldn't mind Philbin repeating the past by bringing in "Certain" Packer players though.

Hey, odindouchi we cant begin a rebuild until Ireland finishes destroying.

Just repeat this mantra "at least we are not the new York jets". And poof nirvana

I think this last Draft was Ireland's best. Count them. Tannehill, Jonathan Martin, Miller, Thigpen, Olivier Vernon, That D line kid, others. What more do you want? 6 or 7 less to look for for next year. Think about it.

Funny, no one complains about the OL or receivers when Moore plays.

Posted by: Tony Nathan | December 03, 2012 at 04:26 PM

Yeah, we NEVER complained about Colombo's Turnstyle or Marshall's drops last year when Moore was playing.

Huh........?

What.......?

LOL...................

Anyone still saying RT is the future is in denial. Denial is a river in Egypt. Bottom line Tannehill is a total bust at the very bottom of his rookie class. Play Moore and go back to the draft in April for a QB. Try Tanny at WR or get a 4th rd pick for him if they can.

Posted by: Tony Nathan | December 03, 2012 at 04:29 PM

Yeah........uh.........OK?

(Did you type this all by yourself too-LOL)

Moore makes those around him better. Tannehill makes those around him worse. Thats the difference between a good and a bad QB.

Craig M, when you Gamble, you have to contabilize your last 100 bets or so. If you are ahead after that you can keep on betting safely. If not, you can be sure that you're never going to win and then, it's your pleasure.

odin might be flipping, also. These constant Fans that we have here...

That's right bud....RUN and hide like the coward you are. Let's see if you get to post another day one here.

Personally, at this point, I think I'd play Devlin with a short leash.

Thats just me though. If we're out of the playoff picture and trying to find our heir apparent, why not get Devlin some playing time?

I take that back, I wouldn't start Devlin against the 49ers. I would wait and see how Tannehill does against another top D.

THEN I would get Devlin a start or at least some playing time. I am not saying I'm giving up on Tannehill either. A good wake up call. A reflective breather, etc, etc. Call it what you like. The fact is Tannehill has been flat more times than not lately. I'd shake things up a little during a throw away year and try and better the team in the process.

odin,

That's my point exactly. Why does Tannehill get a free pass. He needs to get the message, 'you need to play better'. Not saying it's all his fault but he's slid backwards the last few games....no question. Good last week but you probably need to go back to the Indy game for this previous half decent game.

It's not a punishment but rather a different approach.

The Mark Columbo complaints were when RoboHenne was at QB. When Moore started the complaints subsided.

Hey Armando I dont think you are implying we trade Denny,or Ireland look for an acorn in beach sand are you?

The idiot posting as Tony Nathan needs to get the full lobotimy so he can't say anything stupid anymore.

Let me axe you sun'in: how we spozed tuh we-in when we's can't scoe no touchdowns?

We should put in Matt "7-3" Moore.

When Moore played 3 quarters, we scored 31 points no problem.

IMO Tanneyhill has run out of gas. I don't know if he is the real deal or not but at least we went for the brass ring and finally drafted a QB high in the draft. It looks like Joe Philbin is the right guy to shepherd the young lad along. He needs a better WR or two and a better TE plus an upgraded offensive line. What is going on with Michael Egnew? Have the Dolphins sent him to Areas 51 to try and figure out if he is NFL worthy? Or he is out there trying to pack on some muscle so he can block someone bigger than Woody Allen? If we want a better chance at winning that game yesterday why not put Moore in? Tanneyhill didn't have it yesterday. He was missing open receivers the whole game! At least give Moore a shot. I guess it might create a QB controversy if he came in and things started clicking. I don't see how he lost his starting job to begin with as he looked pretty good last year filling in for Henne. Go MIAMI!

Thats funny you regular posters were tooting the draft horn for KAPERNICK was he demoted by harbaugh?

I don't know how more people haven't pointed this out.

Jake Long is Jake Long. To keep him for another go round, we'll have to pony up some big money.

Now, with the injury, Martin can show just how good of a Left Tackle he is/was. Imagine if Ireland landed us Long's replacement with a 2nd round pick and a comparatively MINISCULE salary!

Worst case scenario we spend the money and have Long back next year.

Best case, Martin plays like a Blue Chipper the rest of this season. In so doing he renders Long and his FAT contract obsolete.

I'm a Michigan Fan and I love Long more than most(I suspect). But if Martin can play at a high level, like he did at Standford, then Ireland scores another Coup!

If this plays out, we would need a right tackle. But I think we could find one with the money we save from waiving Long and/or one of the high picks we have in the first three rounds.

I'm not advocating this, I'm just saying, we can't lose with this situation.

I find myself agreeing with Craig, sit Tannehill for at least 1 game. Not so much punishment but might give him a different perspective he can use to be better.

When Ireland and COUP are used in the same sentence word association leads me to CHICKEN COUP OR THE CELLAR where the 2012 FINS are headed.

Odin,

What happens if Martin comes in and doesn't get the job done? I think guys have written Long off, without even having a clue what kind of money he wants. He made $61 million on rookie contract. How do we know he wants to be paid as a top LT. Has anyone talked to him or his agent yet. Jake Long has been a very good player and now because his game has slipped a bit and he's been injured guys can't even wait to ship him out of town. What's wrong with this picture? If I was Jake Long I wouldn't want to play for this fanbase either. A bunch on ingrats. That's the difference between the top organziations and Miami. Slip a little bit and see ya later....Troy Polalmalu has hardly played the last few years in Pittsburgh and I don't see those fans clamouring to run him out of town. How come? Cause they appreciate what he's done for the team....the warrior he is. Miami fans? They want to dump the body before it's even cold. ZERO loyalty and ZERO pride with this fanbase. Four Pro Bowls in a year for this guy and he's played through injuries. And for what? So guys can say he's washed up. Somebody even called him 'an over the hill clown' yesterday on here. Nice!

Come to Miami where you'll be loved for years to come!!.....LOL. Not bloody likely.

OUR OL PLAYERS ,WHEN THEY SIGN THEIR CONTRACTS,THEY FEEL LIKE WORKING FOR THE GOVEREMENT ........

FASNO BEEN 4 YEARS ON THE TEAM WITH 2 TD AND EVERY YEAR OUR DONKEYS ON THIS BLOG ,THEY GIVE HIM MORE CHANCES ...
THAT APPLY ALSO TO ;;

And all because Miami drafted Jake Long instead of Matt Ryan, like it was Jake Long's fault this team hasn't been good. Hilarious!

Yeah, RIGHT-LOL!

The only thing thats subsided is your IQ.

Sporano still grumbles about Colombo and he's been with the jets for almost a year now!

THEY ALL WERE WRITING LOVE LETTERS TO IRELAND....NOW THEY CHANGE COLRES AND RIDE THE (( FIRE IRELAND WAGON ))..............

NO SHAME .........

ALoco,

Have you written a love letter to the lovely Maria today?

((BUFFET OF DONT WAIT UNTIL VALENTINES))

ALoco,

Not true. Ireland gets a pass for this year because of all the change and because of his good work in April's draft but his a** is to the fire if things aren't markedly better next season. The QB and HC get a chance to learn the ropes but all bets are off for everyone next year when they should have learned a thing or not by then.

longs gone, wont hurt us. will def help us with cash

Craig M,

I'm not sure what the deal is with Jake Long.

A couple of things I've noticed, he's been playing at a sub-Jake Long level. He should be in his prime right now, but has appeared to slip. The only thing that makes sense to me is that he has/had an unreported injury. He just hasn't looked 100%

The other thing is that now, because of this latest injury, his total cost will come down. Some can even now apply the label of injury prone. Whether it's a fair assessment or not, his bargaining power has dropped.

This leads me to believe that he will indeed remain a Miami Dolphin. I just can't see any other team breaking the bank for Long now.

This latest injury changes EVERYTHING(IMO). Especially the manner in which the team will address the situation. Up until now, I didn't think they would even consider letting him test the open market. But now, knowing what the Franchise Tag will be(about 15 mil.)and with the latest injury, I believe they will considerate it.

Depending of course how well Martin does at Left Tackle from here on out.

CRAIG,

YOU GUYS ALWAYS SAY THE SAME THING EVERY YEAR.....THAT'S HOW WE KEPT ALL THESE CRAPPY,NO GOOD PLAYERS ALL THESE YEARS LIKE FASANO AND BESS ,THEY R ON THE TEAM FOIR 5 YEARS WITH NO TD IN THE LAST 3 SEASONS,,,,IT'S AMAZING .............

LOOK @ HENNE........2 STARTS,2 WINS ,,,,,,,,,NO MORE CRAPPY OL FOR HENNE ,NO MORE ,,,,,,,,,

Odin,

There's a lot to still be determined. Just bothers me all the 'flavour of the month' fans who dump on this guy at the beginning of December, without even having a CLUE what Long wants to do. Wouldn't it be a good idea to find out what Jake Long wants before running his a** out of town first. Weird fanbase! Of course, it's the same guys who don't show up to even support their team on Sunday making the comments.

You Little French Tickler!

I'll slap MY NAME right outcha mouf!

And replace it with something you'd REALLY like!

Once you had some a dis, you wouldn't never be going back to Mario. Not willingly anyways, you'd ALWAYS be thinking of me.

And THAT my friend, is just the way it is!

ALoco,

I'm not sure what you're on about. Henne? Do you mean the guy that was awful last year? Bess is a good pplayer for this team, just never a number one receiver. Fasano? I've wanted him gone for a long time now.

YG.........

YOU GOT TO LEARN HOW TO WRITE,EVEN ON A BLOG WITH, DIGNITY AND HONESTY ...............

YOU CAN'T WRITE ONE THING ONE DAY AND THE NEXT DAY YOU WRITE SOME COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.........

REPEAT AFTER ME....

DIGNITY,HONESTY ............

N.Suh,
Just another racist black football player, and that number keeps growing and growing. His yellow streak really SHINES.

CraigM,

To tell you the truth, I dont trust Ireland with any offseason nor drafting decisions in 2013. The most consistent draftee this year has been JMart and even he had a very slow start.

Tannehill has either regressed or become frustrated with his inconsistent recieving corps. Vernon's been relatively quiet lately. Miller cant seem to get enough carries. Egnew cant get onto the playing field period. Matthewsisnt quite ready to make major contributions. The other rookie wr like Egnew cant get on the playing field.

The 2012 draft's yeild slow, painful, and inconsistent results. Irelands top fa signing on the shelf(Marshall. Plus we're minus Davis and Marshall(which I understand but the timing was awful).

This is why I dont trust Ireland with even 1 more offseason.

Craig,
Your squabble with the blog troll aside, are you really equating a first year HC to a multi year GM hand picked by someone no longer with the organization? In terms of job security??

CRAIG,,,,,,,

BESS,MY FOOT.........

TELL ME ,HOW BESS IS A GOOD PLAYER MAKING CLOSE TO 3 MILLION A YEAR ?

HOW MANY TD HE HAD THIS YEAR AND LAST......................???????????

AS FOR HEENE

HENNE WAS A 500 QB WITH THE WORST OL IN THE NFL ,NOW HE'S A QB WITH 102 RATTING.......

Thats the **KEY PHRASE** right there Craig!

Consider the source-lol.

ALoco, as you probably know, I have posted many times my belief that Ireland was more involved than many think during the Parcells years. Be that as it may, even if you just judge Ireland on the past 2 years, has this team improved?

We are still 5-6 players away from being competitive. And we have been for years.

MARIA/MARIO?

TO BE OR NUT TO BE!

You people are total idiots the kid is a freakin rookie with no speed at receiver and a below average line ok give the kid a year at least you should all be jets fans we are supposed to be behind our team go dolphins rebuilding takes time you stupid morons
