Through 12 gamess Moore was better than Tannehill

Remember when Joe Philbin, faced with a rebuilding year, staunchly refused to admit the Dolphins were rebuilding?

We all expected it to be a rebuilding season and knew for certain it was coming when rookie Ryan Tannehill won the starting job in the preseason. Let's face it, many rookies need time to acclimate and grow into the quarterback position in the NFL.

(Well, maybe not Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, and Russell Wilson but you get the idea).

The point is Tannehill has so far proven one thing this year and it is not that he's a future franchise quarterback. He's proven what everyone said before the draft was right. He's raw, he's inexperienced, he's a project.

The proof of this is not so much how Tannehill compares to the other rookie quarterbacks within his own draft class. It is how he compares with the veteran who played with basically the same cast of talent in Miami last year.

The proof is how Tannehill compares to what Matt Moore did with the practically same offensive group last year. And this is the perfect time for that comparison because Tannehill has started 12 games for the Dolphins. And Moore started 12 games for the Dolphins in 2011.

Tannehill has completed 210 of 363 passes (57.9 completion percentage) for 2,559 yards. He has thrown seven TDs and 12 INTs. His quarterback rating is 72.3. The Dolphins are 5-7.

Moore in the same number of 2011 games completed 193 of 321 passes (60.1 percent) for 2,330 yards. He threw 16 TDs and 8 INTs. His quarterback rating was 88.7. The Dolphins were 6-6.

The comparison is valid now because obviously the number of games between both players is equal. But the point is not necessarily that Moore was better.

The point is the Dolphins this year have taken a step backward in quarterback performance. Moore delivered better QB play than Tannehill but still was not deemed good enough because Miami drafted a quarterback in the first round and signed another accomplished veteran in David Garrard.

But now the Dolphins are accepting worse quarterback play with the expectation that today's pain will lead to tomorrow's gain. No one is saying that Tannehill should be benched -- even Philbin this week admitted he's not considered it at all this season.

And no is is suggesting the Dolphins will need to look for another (better) quarterback in the draft next year -- no one is saying it yet, anyway.

Why?

Because this is a rebuilding year. Tannehill is getting something of a pass this year.

Even if Philbin didn't want to admit it early on.

bill,

I'm not a Tebow fan by ANY means but to say he did 'nothing' last year isn't accurate. He took over a 1-4 team last year and took them to the playoffs, where they beat Pittsburgh in the first round. That's 'something'.

Again, not a fan but let's paint a proper picture, OK?

Well, not Matt Flynn numbers but you get my point.

Tannehill should be the backup until he proves he doesnt stink.

ross = loria.
lol

he didnt take them, he completed 5 passes a game and watched the defense take over. tebow is complete garbage. no way would i ever want that 3rd stringer here

I do Turd and you have a good point.

People always want to say Moore had Marshall (and his many drops)...but he also had the turnstile or the right side of the O line..Part of Moore's season included learning the new offense in 3 games (no preseason)and further recall the NE game last year when he had the dolphins in the lead the first hal, then our defense couldn't stop Brady in the second..
Moore may or may not ever turn into a "franchise QB"..we don't know..but he is a heck of a lot better Starter than RT is at the present and I am tired of all the excuses for Tannehill

Sanchez starting again this week. Gotta hand it to Ryan, he STICKS by his guys. It's going to get him fired at some point in time, as it did with Sparano and Henne. Guys will hate this move but I think it gives the Jets the best chance to beat Jacksonville this weekend and that's all that matters.

moore hits those 2 bombs 2 bh that rt f'd ^.

Bill, what makes you think teams are not bracketing or doubling Hartline?

Only team that didn't do it was New England and they put their best CB -- Talib -- on him all game and Hartline ate him up.

"Because this is a rebuilding year. Tannehill is getting something of a pass this year."

And so is next season. If Tannehill improves & we add some receivers to go with Hartline & Bess the offense will improve but with all the pending FA's on the defense like Starks, McDaniel, Smith, & Clemons I don't see how we'll be able to fill those holes even if we keep Smith.

I thought we'd go 3-13 this season but we have miraculously won five games so far. We still have chances to beat Jacksonville &/or the Bills so our best case scenario is 7-9. No way do I see us beating the Niners or Patriots. With all the holes on this team I'd be surprised if we finished better than 8-8 next year.

Mando, the stats on marshall and hartline may be simmilar but is the talent similar, or is it also fair to say moore had both and not just one?

he also had better play from long, you said so yourself many times

the supporting cast was better last year, no doubt.

Tannehill make stats and little points; thus few wins. Matt Moore scores points, as he did in releif of Tannehill in that Jets game; which we would have lost had Moore not come in in releif of Tannehill. This is what scares me about Tannehill. He so similar to Henne, that I keep accidently calling him Henne!

bill,

Whatever. It's the old 'I'll say anything to fit my argument story'.

Again, not a fan of Tebow but the guy got them there. It wasn't happening under Orton and things changed dramatically under Tebow. Whatever happens going forward, you can't change history.

Tannehill makes the players around him worse. There are few complaints when Moore plays. Thats the difference between a good and bad QB.

I'm back!!!! Armando you can't ban me lol

stats r 4 losers.

What is the difference between the third WRs on the team between. Tis year and last?

armando what games are u watching.they almost always use the safeties even up on the line to stop the run. hartline and bess dont scare anyone. rex ryan is done, hes gone, sparano is gone. and sanchez is gone

I cant recall Henne ever being as bad as Tannehill.

Guys I think we're forgetting who was playing RT last year. The guy was a human turnstyle. We also had inconsistent play from the RG position. So anyone saying the OL was better last year is kidding themselves or in denial. There were PAGES upon PAGES of posts of guys wanting rid of Colombo. The RT position has been much better this year.

Mando, got a question. What do you make of Tannehill doing all those P Manning fake pre-snap calls? Or his he that good?

Tebow > Tannehill

By the way, all you whining about Moore having a Pro Bowl WR:

Through 12 games this yr, Brian Hartline has 60 catches, 891 yards, 1TD.

Through 12 games last yr, Brandon Marshall 63 catches 910 yards, 3 TD.

Practically the same.

Mando,

What??? The difference between this year & last year is that Moore had three WR's that can make plays vs. two WR's that Tannehill has!!!

Yes Hartline & Bess are having their best season but it would be nice for Tannehill to have a 3rd WR to throw too...

beerphin thats easy, 3rd was bess last year now its??? moore? lol i can recall henne being much worse than thill. and thill is just a rookie, whats hennes excuse. guy cant even hold onto the jacksonville job.

Craig, in all those games you mentioned, he did nothing in crunch time. NOTHING. If anything he had timely turnovers in every single one of those games that impacted the outcome more than anything.

There is only one guy I didn't want to see QB Miami this year and that is Matt Moore. He is not the guy.

bill,

All dues respect bud, you don't get too many of these 'he's done' predictions right. I remember you saying 'Henne will never start in this league again' and guess what. Just like Santa, he's coming to town in a couple of weeks....as a STARTER.

Tannehill is the WORST QB in the league! Numbers dont lie.

wrong craig, said he would never start i n league again without an injury. and rex is done, so is sparano book it

Moore had Brandon Marshall.

CASE CLOSED.

Mark,

I'll agree he did NOTHING in crunch time. But a lot of that I blame on the play-calling. The coaches but the handcuffs on him in the second half and got away from what got us those leads in the first place. This was how Sparano liked to coach and it cost us and ultimately him his job.

Tannehill has the benefit of knowing that no matter how he plays bad or good he's not getting benched. It would seem like it would take alot of the pressure off don't ya think??? He should be playing better under those conditions!!

Just like good players around Henne did not improve his play; Tannehill will not be any better next year. In fact he is more likely to be worse next year; Just Like Henne. Then we discover that we have wasted 6 years on projects. Good qbs have seasons like RG3 and Luck. Even though Dan Marino did not throw for 3000 yards, he still scored regularly in the red zone. Even as a rookie, Dan Marino came in the game against the Jets, with less than 2 minutes left and down 17-0. Dan Marino throw 2 touchdowns in that short period of time. If he had 5 minutes to work with, Dan would have won that game by 1 or 2 touchdowns. My point; ALL good quarterbacks produce their first year; maybe not all season but in many of the games that they play; you see something that lets you know that you have a winner in a qb!

bill,

Change the story any way you want. I know what you said.

I am of the opinion you shouldn't lose your starting job over injury. Liked henne in college but he was inconsistent... Still is very inconsistent but I thought he wasnt the problem last year. Coaching staff was godawful

Tannehill has a spark despite the numbers, which everyone can see, including the staff of Super Bowl winning coaches. He'll be fine and I think this year has been great for him. It's obvious that Philbin meant he wanted to "win now" way back when, like every other coach in the NFL...not sure I remember a "staunch" proclamation one way or the other on the subject of rebuilding. Though I appreciate your flare for drama, Mando, sometimes your indictments of the coaches seems petty.

Aside from Nolan

Okay.. Moore was better.. but how far did he take the team? And what was his ceiling? The facts are that we would not have contended with Moore either, and he had reached his ceiling last season. He was not going to get any better than he was. And for a team that hovered at mediocrity, that ceiling just wasn't high enough. Compare that to Tannehill who, despite his TD/INT ratio not being comparable to Moore's, has the Dolphin crew just one game behind what Moore's crew did AND his ceiling is much higher. He's inconsistent, yes, but he's got talent. A lot of it. He just has to learn the game. He's a smart kid, he'll figure it out. I'll take 7-9, or even 6-10, with Tannehill over 8-8 with Moore.

worst qb in league is by far lindley on zona, good lord that kid is bad

bill,

I'll also make a friendly wager with you that Rex Ryan will keep his job. The Jets AND Bills are going to finish ahead of us in the standing when it's all over. Watch.....

You could surround Tannehill with an all star team and he'd still stink.

Justin,

Not sure if it was you or Jason calling me a 'clown' yesterday for some of the things I said during the day yesterday. Just wanted to point out I had an impersonator on here yesterday and I wasn't on here during the day. No clue what the person said but I just wanted to clear up that it wasn't me.

Seems like Mando is gone so I'll open this question to others. What do you make of Tannehill's P Manning type fake pre-snap calls? How about his 48 go or 48 go-go?

Every young QB faces a slump at one time or another (see Cam Newton) when defense have figured out their tendencies. Henne showed a lot of promises at the beginning, but once opponents figured out how to game him, he turned into Checkdown Chad. He never elevated his game afterwards.

Tannehill is going through a bad slump right now. Defense is blitzing him sparingly. Rather they're covering their man and letting him make mistakes. Tannehill has to elevate his game or he will be the next Henne. This and next season are rebuilding years and we'll just have to be patient.

Knowing this playbook before he got here has helped TanneBust immensely! LOL!

And where does this tehory that Moore put up all these points up against the NY jets come from???

The offense produced two touchdowns that day.

Moore was an incredible 11-19 for 131 yards and one touchdown.

Tony Nathan= zonk= voice of reason= verdad=. Home?

Or am I just being paranoid?

What happened to whipping out the old' ban stick or does that qualify as limited trolling?

so do i craig, said exactly that. and so far its 100 percent true and i still stick by it,. no team will ever have henne as there starter without injury. guy is awful

I'm honestly trying to understand what starting Moore this season would have accomplished. Let's say he played better than Tannehill & somehow, someway we were able to win 1-3 more games. Big f#cking deal. All we're doing is inflating the team to look slightly better than we are. We still wouldn't have made the playoffs & since we just drafted a QB with the 8th pick Moore was not coming back anyway. Not to mention that Tannehill would be not have had the valuable experience of playing against NFL defenses that he gained this season.

Mark, its rare TanneBust gets one td!

Ireland is fixated on football players from Texas.

I think Moore ends up in a place like Arizona next year. I'm not overly impressed with the QBs coming out in the draft and I don't expect there to be 4-5 starting right away, as there was this year. Moore would have a better chance to play in Arizona than Miami because Tannehill will be the man again next year. My guess is that Devlin will the back-up next and maybe a vet for insurance.

bills def finish ahead of us, jets prob top 3 worst team ive ever watched but each team is already in front of us so course they will finish ahead. whats ur point, u think cause they finished ahead of the fins that ryan keeps his job,lol

and gruden to oakland picking up steam with him admitting to having a meeting with them

GUYS! HENNE HAS MORE TD'S THEN TANNEHILL AND HENNE'S ONLY PLAYED IN 3 GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pointless article - this is a rebuilding year & therefore the stats aren't really relevant. New coaches, new schemes, limited at WR & an O-line that is still a work in progress. Add to that that Tannehill has very limited experience as a QB and is in fact learning the position in flight! Nobody at Miami is going to admit this is year 1 of the rebuilding but only a fool would think otherwise. Despite all of this we've already won 1 game more than the pundits predicted - and narrowly lost 2 others in OT. I'd happily lose the rest of our games in OT to secure higher draft picks & speed the rebuilding process up. (This wont include future bust Barkley!) What has concerned me about RT is his failure to throw more than 1 TD in a game but I believe this years experience means he can be accurately judged next year. I Don't understand the point of the article - it just seems fatuous!

Craig that is only true if Tannehill finishes out the season! If Matt MOore or Devlin gets a shot, we will win out and get the last playoff spot.

48 Go,

Agreed. It's up to Tannehill to take what he's learned this season & make him a better QB next year. Some more receivers should definitely help as well.

Moore came off the bench and had 52 players around him who had played Sparano football the previous couple of years and knew the play book inside out. Tannehill knows Shermans (WCO) system but had 52 players who had to learn a new play book. Tannehill does not have the supporting cast that the WCO needs to be sucessful this year. A lot of missing pieces. I agree that he gets a pass this year but Ireland and Philbin need to get the players to get to the next level. Parcels/Sparano was Run first the WCO is opposite.
Thanks Armando for trying to clean up this blog. Too many trolls and impersonators.

Bond,

What??? We're not beating the Niners or the Patriots on the road. We'll be lucky if we get to 7 wins this year but I expect we'll probably lose to the Bills as well & finish 6-10.
